Amazon.com essential recording
Throughout his long career, Art Blakey built a tremendous reputation for aggressive bands that featured the most gifted young musicians. Few of his later bands, however, could stand comparison with this 1960 edition of the hard-bop juggernaut. Its members combined strong writing skills with distinctive solo voices, including the creative seeking of tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter; the edgy, sometimes blistering, trumpet of Lee Morgan; and the soul-drenched piano of Bobby Timmons. Blakey's drumming contributes an explosive drive to this CD's version of Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia," a coiling snake of bop exoticism, while "So Tired" is a Timmons essay in deep funk, like his better-known "Moanin'" and "Dat Dere" an elemental tune with subtle underpinnings. --Stuart Broomer
Product Description
Even in 1959, when this album was recorded, Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night In Tunisia" was the subject of endless recorded versions, most of them dull. With one of the greatest editions of the Jazz Messengers, Blakey found new inspiration in the tune and recorded this explosive, masterful version.
Members Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter and Bobby Timmons contribute originals to the album and Timmons's "So Tired" might have been a soul jazz hit were it not for the overwhelming power of the title tracks. Two bonus tracks have been added to the original album.
ART BLAKEY, drums
LEE MORGAN, trumpet; WAYNE SHORTER, tenor sax: BOBBY TIMMONS, piano; JYMIE MERRITT, bass
* Bonus tracks, not part of the original LP
Recorded on August 7 (#2, 4, 6 & 7) & August 14 (#1,3,5), 1960 at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey

This is great Jazz.......2007-06-27
Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers light up my CD players. In my home and in my car. I have been listening to Jazz since I was small and my Uncle played with many name bands. Good Jazz has always been a feeling for me more then a sound. Art Blakey and his band make me feel it baby.
dig those drums.......2007-03-19
bah! da da da da dish bah...
art blakey made the tune a night in tunisia his own, his solo opening the selection is so spectacular i wanted the drumming to go on. but then i would had missed the straight out tenor playing of wayne shorter, followed by lee morgan.
to call something a waltz outside of european based concert music is risky, the ear wants to make comparisons to hear if what is called a waltz is really a waltz or just someone saying something is a waltz. fortunately, for jazz there's fats waller's jitterbug waltz as the first jazz waltz. lee morgan's koko's waltz is in the tradition of the jazz waltz.
blakey's a night in tunisia is a filler in your jazz collection. you can't claim to like jazz or talk about jazz unless you've at least heard tunisia. and for the ridiculously low price it's being offered, less than eight dollars, at this writing, you really shouldn't pass it up.
IF this doesn't blow you away check your pulse.......2006-05-20
I do believe this is the most powerful, visceral recording in the Messengers catalogue. The title track alone never ceases to astound me but the entire set is fabulous. Lee Morgan never sounded better and Wayne Shorter adds a definite hip edge to the whole affair. Art Blakey's drumming on this clearly demonstrates what an incredible powerhouse this guy was. Not to be missed!
Mr. There.......2006-03-04
I came to this album very early in my jazz listening career (taking baby steps out of the Ken Burns cradle). I bought it right after "Moanin'" because that seemed like the logical thing to do. Let me tell you, this album is a HUGE shock after "Moanin'" if you're not prepared for it. While "Moanin'" was an excursion in groove, swing, and in-the-pocket hard bop, "A Night In Tunisia" is a forward-looking powerhouse that isn't as accessible but just as amazing. The reason for this change can be traced primarily to the passage of two years and the presence of Wayne Shorter who was, is, and always will be ahead of his time. Though he contributed only one tune to this session, "Sincerely Diana," that tune and his others like it moved the Jazz Messengers much closer to the cutting edge of the new harmonic language that would become post-bop. His szxophone playing is also much drier and more angular than his predecessor, Benny Golson. Initially, this was a turn-off to me, as it will be for the casual jazz listener. Wayne Shorter takes time to appreciate but he truly is one of the greatest geniuses jazz has ever known.
As the other reviewers have said, the title track is a long, intense affair that highlights Art Blakey's drive and power on the drums. But it features great playing from all of the group, and Lee Morgan's cadenza near the end with Art cheering him on is one of the great moments of Jazz Messengers history. The other tunes, "So Tired," "Yama," and "Kozo's Waltz," are definitely in the hard-bop vein but they do predict the innovations to come in the following years. Since this album is not as immediately accessible as "Moanin'" and some others, get "Moanin'" first, then get "The Big Beat," also with Shorter present. Then check out "Like Someone in Love," from the same session as this one. If you like all of those albums, then get this one. The level of musicianship is superb and Art Blakey's drumming is superhuman in its drive.
Wow, title track lights a fire up your ass.......2006-02-09
Whoever said that the Night of Tunisia is not a good version has a bad ear...
The fact that it is almost out of control and frentic makes it my favorite version by far. You can't guess what is gonna happen next and it sounds like every band member is on the edge of their seats...that is what jazz is all about. As a musician myself, you crave for the edge of your seat frentic feeling when the tempo is up and you can barely keep up. In fact, it's much more dynamic than some of Blakey's more well known, but more straightforward albums...

The Turtle Island String Quartet has always been known for stretching stylistic and instrumental limits. Despite several personnel changes, its adventurous spirit of exploration is intact, and the baritone violin, that extraordinary hybrid instrument introduced by Darol Anger, is now being played by David Balakrishnan. The program on this disc has a Latin American orientation, with influences of Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, and the Caribbean, as well as African rhythms and American jazz. The pieces are all written or arranged by members of the group; their guest, the virtuoso clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera, contributes two compositions.
The playing is splendid. When string players make their instruments sound like saxophones, guitars, slap-basses, drums, and castanets, string quartet fans tend to get a bit uneasy, but these musicians can also sound like a real string quartet capable of producing a mellow, beautiful tone as well as every imaginable color effect, like ponticello, pizzicato, and barriolage. Moreover, the conversational give-and-take between them is in the best chamber music tradition. The slow pieces have a lilting, songful lyricism; the fast ones jump, dance, and run around brilliantly. To a classically oriented listener, the least convincing numbers are those based on classical pieces, like "Girl from Pathetique," frankly inspired by Tchaikovsky, and "Schizo Grosso," supposedly inspired by Beethoven. "A Night in Tunisia" is a showpiece for the clarinetist and he plays it to the hilt. --Edith Eisler

They Are All Good!.......2003-04-09
Danzon is an excellent record! I have been listening to TISQ since they began in the eighties. They are supurb musicians all the way around. Their use of the standard emsemble string quartet seems to get brighter and more astounding with each record. A good example of the versitility of the band is heard with Girl From Pathetique. They stretch their range here and take it a little bit outside. The whole CD is consistent, masterfully arranged and performed. If you have heard this band, this one might be a good place to start. Having Paquito D'Rivera is an extra, EXTRA bonus. I keep hoping they will get the attention they deserve. Great spin!

A wonderful jazz piano album.......2005-04-13
I heard this album playing at a record store in California and decided to buy it. What a surprise! One senses an artist with mastery of both old and new jazz piano techniques. Arturo has the ability to mix bebop lines, modal jazz, quartal harmony, and latin stylings in a single tune. Yet, his flourishes are always tasteful and never overplayed. He pays constant homage to a tune's melody. He shows his beautiful playing both with a group and on a wonderful solo performance of Puerta (track 10). I hear echos of Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, and even Vince Guaraldi in his music. This is a fun album to listen to, epecially if you like jazz piano. I wait in anticipation for his next release!
Pure, beautiful, jazz piano.......2004-03-12
I took a chance and bought this cd because it was in the clearance bin. Man, did I luck out! The entire program is far and away one of the most beautiful, purely melodic combination of Brazilian and classic jazz I have heard in many, mnay years. If you like melodies that are just squeezed out of every key with warmth, tender-loving care, and great feeling you must run to get this cd. No gimmicks, no stryaing too far from the melody, just beutiful, lucid, gorgeous music making. Hats off to Arturo and I am eagerly awaiting your next cd.
Different, but good..........2002-12-30
I found this cd at a yard sale. It was kind of beat up, something atracted me to it. Maybe it was the cd cover's artwork, I don't know. Anyhow, This was my 1st latin jazz cd in my collection. It isn't my last, but it is my favorite. The songs are a combination of jazz and contemporary. I have many favorites here so I won't list them all. Check out the cd if you want to hear something different. You won't be disappointed!!!

Take Your Pick.......2006-06-02
There are several Blakey albums that share this title, the best known being the 1960 Blue Note session with Morgan and Shorter. In fact, the Amazon description mistakenly refers to the 1960 session. This 1957 RCA/Vik date, originally released under the title "Theory of Art," is equally interesting to my ears, especially with musicians like Bill Hardman, Johnny Griffin, and Jackie McClean on hand. But of even greater interest is a "two-fer" album on the Collectables label that combines this session with a 1957 RCA/Vik recording called "Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Play Lerner and Lowe." There's also a monster Blakey session circa 1980 titled "Night in Tunisia," with David Schnitter, Bobby Watson, Valery Ponomarev and James Williams on board. It's hard to go wrong with any of these three recordings.
[Perhaps the "know-it-all" who immediately gave a negative rating to what I believe to be a factual clarification could be of some productive use if he or she instead chose to set the record straight. My source of information is allmusic.com as well as the CD's themselves.]
Good Blakey, but its before the incredible Blakey.......2004-06-24
This is a solid album, especially the medium-tempo Off the Wall. It has some good solo work, and some interesting originals.
Of the 3 horn players, Jackie Mclean is probably the most well known, but his playing here is not as good as I've heard in other places. THere are many times where his lines are very polished, but just not quite adventurous enough. By contrast, trumpeter Hardman's solos are impassioned, but he isn't very accurate. Thus, Johnny Griffin steals the show, as he manages to take the best of both, especially on his Off the Wall solo.
Blakey's drumming is stellar as usual, though the rhythmic contributions of pianist Sam Dockery and basist Spanky de Brest are forgettable. Neither man would ever make a name for himself.
All in all, this is a fun album to listen to, as the cover says "a racuous hard bop session," and its cool to see Mclean and Griffin playing togehter. Unfortunately, it cannot hold a candle to the first of the great post-Silver Art Blakey bands. Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons and especially Lee Morgan don't come in for another year or so, and its knowing of the amazing albums that come later that keep this one from being a classic.
There are 3 different albums with this title..........2002-05-11
And it gets sorta confusing:
This is the A Night In Tunisia from 1958, formerly available as a double-set along with 1957's Jazz Messengers Play Lerner & Loewe. The most famous A Night In Tunisia is the 1960 set on Blue Note Records. And there is also a 3rd album entitled A Night In Tunisia on Emarcy/Polygram Records, which was recorded in Japan in 1979.
For my money, the Blue Note session just barely edges out this one for Best Performance, with the '79 finishing a distant 3rd. Hope that clears up the confusion!
The review is wrong, but the music is right.......2002-04-25
This CD does not include the line-up mentioned in the review, however, it does include one of Jackie McLean's last appearances with the Messengers. Interestingly the CD cover (which accurately reproduces the original album) does not mention McLean. Because he was already under contract to a different record company at the time of the release, he appears under a false name. The story is told in the liner notes.
This twin sax, sextet version of the Messengers sounds great. I was hooked from the moment I heard Blakey's drum intro on the title track. If you like Blakey and bop, you will like this CD.
caveat emptor.......2002-02-07
The editorial review included on this page is not for this album. Despite the same title, I don't think the personnel is the same and they are on different labels. The review is of the Blue Note release.

LIVE IN COPENHAGEN, PART 1.......2002-10-08
Both "A Night In Tunisia" and "Walkin" were recorded "live" in 1963 at the Montmartre Jazzhus, Copenhagen. Byas on tenor sax accompanied by European rhythm section that featured a very young Niels H.O. Pederson on string bass.
Fine live quartet recording of mainstream jazz. The tunes are bop standards with a couple of ballads. Byas was in great form, combining some of Bird's fluidness with the big tone of Coleman Hawkins. The tracks on "Tunisia" are better performed and recorded than those on "Walkin," but both recordings are very enjoyable.
