There aren't many reviews for this notebook, and I recently purchased this item so I hope it can be of some help to people who are considering this product.

What made me buy this notebook?

1. The price after rebate (rebate for 150 ends 6/30/05).
2. Built in broadcom wireless b/g.
3. Durability, solid feel.
4. About 6 pounds for a 15 inch screen.
5. The 40 gig HDD runs at 5400rpm.
6. The 256RAM (PC2700 333mhz, 200 pin).
7. Battery life

These features are hard to find in a notebook for the price of 650 after rebate. Some drawbacks are the Celeron processor. I've checked it out, and it runs pretty strong based on my experience. I hear the Celeron and the Pentium M are architecturally the same, but the Celeron doesn't support enhanced speed step and certain power saving features. But I think this version of the Celeron (M 360J) does in fact support these features but I'm sure there are certain multimedia capabilites where its lacking. At any rate, I think the processor is more than sufficient for my needs (I don't do any heavy gaming or intensive graphics work).

Notebooks in this price range usually come with 4200rpm hard drives, and I think this is the real bottleneck of a system. The nx6110, however, has a 5400rpm HDD. The CD writer/DVD-ROM is a Sony. The RAM is one stick of 256MB PC2700 DDR 333 SO-DIMM 200 pin located under the keyboard. This is very little RAM, and no doubt the greatest bottleneck in this system. However, it is EASILY upgradable. You can install a 512 stick of any brand of PC2700 200-pin RAM into the system by simply unscrewing one screw located on the base of the laptop. This bumped me up to 768MB of RAM. Other low-priced laptops that come with 512MB of RAM usually have two sticks of 256 (usually at PC2100). This means if you want to upgrade then at least of one of those 256 sticks cannot be reused. So I think this laptop is perfect for upgrading the RAM, and a 512 stick can be had for around 50.

Then there's the battery. Most notebooks in this price range come with a 4-cell battery. The nx6110 comes standard with a 6-cell battery. I'm still testing it out, but the specs from HP say it runs about 4.2 hours.

Finally, this notebook comes with XP Home. This annoyed me, but I simply erased everything and put on a clean install of XP Pro. It was very easy, and even without the drivers the setup runs smoothly. After I setup XP Pro, I simply used the driver CD that came with the laptop for full device functionality. HP's website also has every driver imaginable for this laptop, and for all versions of Windows. It also comes with an XP Home CD, in case you ever want to bring it back to factory condition.

So, I am very satisfied with the laptop for the price. Of course there are much faster and lighter notebooks out there, but not for this price. Similar cheap laptops are either lacking in certain features/specs, or they are built like a toy (i.e. Dell Inspirons and Acer Aspires). The nx6110 is built to last (the screen hinge is like a rock), as a good business laptop should be.
