Eight years before Tobey Maguire was born, the animated Spider-Man spun his first web across America's television screens. The program ran from 1967 through 1970 on ABC, and imprinted its theme song, "Spider-Man, Spider-Man/ Does whatever a spider can / Spins a web, any size / Catches thieves--just like flies" on a generation of viewers.

The comic book Spider-Man, who debuted in Marvel's Amazing Fantasy in 1962, epitomized the superhero as antihero. During his battles with bizarre villains, Peter Parker was beset by self-doubts and personal problems. The animated Spider-Man was a straightforward action superhero who was too busy performing weird stunts like fashioning a boat and motor out of spider webs to worry or agonize.

From the opening titles that announce the program is "in COLOR," Spider-Man feels dated. When he fights Electro, Spidey can fend off blasts of electricity because he's added "just a little asbestos to my web liquid"; when he discovers the extent of his new powers, Peter dreams of a spot on The Ed Sullivan Show. Although the directors include Ralph Bakshi and former Disney artist Clyde Geronimi, the animation is extremely limited. The same shots of Spiderman swinging over New York appear again and again. But these limits probably won't trouble nostalgic adults who grew up watching Spider-Man on Saturday mornings: "Wherever there's a hang-up / You'll find the Spider-Man!" (Unrated, suitable for ages 7 and older: cartoon violence, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars This DVD set is awesome!.......2007-07-02

Like others here, my young son loves Spider-Man but the 2000 series contains big breasts, half shirts and swearing. The '67 box set is the Spider-Man I grew up watching in the 70's. I love the nostalgia and my son and I have a blast watching the show together. Great quality and packaging. A must for die hard Spidey fans or those who have young ones who love Spider-Man.

5 out of 5 stars Just as we remember. .......2007-06-30

Our 3 year old son is very much into Spiderman. However, the other Spiderman cartoons are all to violent for a 3 year old. Then I started looking for the old ones that my husband and I watched in reruns when we were young and they are perfect. I recommend this for all ages but especially the young superhero fans.

5 out of 5 stars The '67 Box Set Collection.......2007-06-27

Never having been a fan of Spider-Man before (much less have known who Peter Parker was), I remember going to the movie theatres when the first movie came out. It wasn't until when Spider-Man 2 came out that I really found myself wanting to see me, read some of his comics books, and watch all these vintage cartoons.

I don't know how long this collection has been out of Amazon's stock, but I saw two copies on the shelves at a local media store around the time Spider-Man 3 came out. Of course, I picked one up knowing I may never come across it again. I could not be happier that I have.

The collection is not entirely in order of the events in Parker's life, but they are as they aired on television. One of my favorite episodes is the one where Parker is biten by the radioactive spider and the phenomenon takes place (which is on Disc 3, I think).

Although I did not grow up on Spider-Man or any other comic book stuff, I really do enjoy watching these cartoons and their charm. Spidey's style of swinging in the air and sprouting web from his wrists are different than what the audience sees in the other popular media forms we've seen of him. However, this is where Spidey first began on television. If these cartoons did not exist, who knows if the subsequential cartoons and movies that we love today we even be. The color is brilliant. The music, especially the theme song, is somewhat of the comical sense, nevertheless fills the audience with joy and anticipation of what's coming in each adventure. A classic of a charecter, this collection is a classic in of itself.

Our children love this old cartoon. We can't allow them to watch regular cartoons nowadays, but buy old ones now. They love it !

4 out of 5 stars hip, cool, and fun!.......2007-06-04

We really enjoy watching these episodes. They are hip, cool, and fun! It's a nice flashback to our younger days, and our son loves them, too.

4 out of 5 stars Not Quite There.......2007-06-25

After finding Vol I in the Walmart discount bin, I was excited to view the rest, I never saw thus series on TV. But When I went for the on-line search I found that the Volumes did not list the episodes. Not wanting to re-buy what I had, I looked deeper. And as I thought there is a flaw to the series( Not being able to get them all in one series). The show is very good, really beyond comparison to current American animation. But I will take Dart Kommisar's suggestion and wait for the full season series or hope to stumble across them individually in the discount bin. I was about to order them individually on Amazon through the "used" section but decided to skip the hassle and added shipping cost. Walmart might have the other volumes, so I will check there first. In review, Great show, great animation, lousy marketing. My suggestion, let's all express our feeling to the company. WHO'S IN?

4 out of 5 stars Everyones got a love spider man!.......2007-05-15

While I believe the cartoon itself deserves 5+ stars this set is only getting 4. For one reason alone. They need to start releasing the season box sets. Come On!!

5 out of 5 stars When Will They release all the seasons?.......2007-04-24

When Will They release all the seasons? I used to watch this and power rangers when I was little I really wish they would release some complete seasons of both shows.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the smile on my sons face!.......2007-03-08

The Spiderman collection served its purpose as my son was very happy to watch and pretend he is spiderman and/or his enemies. The Spiderman collection should involve every Spiderman DVD from that series as it is somewhat confusing when ordering and not knowing which DVDs actually come in the collection series. Overall I rate the series w/a passing grade.

More than a few critics hailed Spider-Man 2 as "the best superhero movie ever," and there's no compelling reason to argue--thanks to a bigger budget, better special effects, and a dynamic, character-driven plot, it's a notch above Spider-Man in terms of emotional depth and rich comic-book sensibility. Ordinary People Oscar®-winner Alvin Sargent received screenplay credit, and celebrated author and comic-book expert Michael Chabon worked on the story, but it's director Sam Raimi's affinity for the material that brings Spidey 2 to vivid life. When a fusion experiment goes terribly wrong, a brilliant physicist (Alfred Molina) is turned into Spidey's newest nemesis, the deranged, mechanically tentacled "Doctor Octopus," obsessed with completing his experiment and killing Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) in the process. Even more compelling is Peter Parker's urgent dilemma: continue his burdensome, lonely life of crime-fighting as Spider-Man, or pursue love and happiness with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst)? Molina's outstanding as a tragic villain controlled by his own invention, and the action sequences are nothing less than breathtaking, but the real success of Spider-Man 2 is its sense of priorities. With all of Hollywood's biggest and best toys at his disposal, Raimi and his writers stay true to the Marvel mythology, honoring Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and setting the bar impressively high for the challenge of Spider-Man 3. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Spiderman 3.......2007-06-15

Spiderman 3 is an incredible movie with outstanding effects. The effets are a compliment to the amazing graphics!! Starring Toby Maguire as Peter Parker/Spiderman, and James Franco as the new Goblin/Harry Osborn. Which side will Harry and spidey be on joining. Will they reunite or rebel?

Was flint marko the true killer of uncle ben parker?who is the sandman? Many questions only to be answered if you see this movie yourself!!

This movie is unbelievable!! It is the best spiderman yet, I cant wait forthe 4th movie.Like i said the affects arent even comparible to the other spidermans. This is my favorite movie ever! Spiderman 3 waswas released may 4th with a rating of pg-13. It got this rating because of intense action violence. The movie lasted about two hours long.

I would probably reccomend this movie to anyone who likes the other spidermen. If you havent seen them, then if you like action you would love it!

3 out of 5 stars Liked it better when it was called Superman 2.......2007-06-08

There are so many people who laud this as the best comic book movie ever. I call shenanigans on that. Lifting the excellent plot device of Superman 2, Petter Parker decides to surrender being Spider-Man in order to find love and a life. Unlike the decision made by Superman, where he is forced to change who he is in order to embrace a normal life and find true love, Peter Parker selfishly gives up being Spider-Man to continue being who he was to begin with, a dork with school, girls, and work on his mind. The opening of the movie leading up to the central part of the story work quite well and I applaud the writing. Dr. Octopus' origin and goals, Harry Osbourne's continuing disdain for Spider-Man, and Peter Parker's angst all come across realistically and draw the audience in. Then they start to throw in the cliches and lame plot devices, a clear foreshadowing to what was to cripple the third installment: Peter's subconscious ridding him of his powers because deep down he doesn't want to be Spider-Man, the kid asking Peter where Spider-Man disappeared to giving ol' Parker second thoughts on surrendering the persona, etc. This is New York City. The belief that Spidey's removal would prove dire not only insults the true heroes of the city (firemen, police, etc.) it also stretches the realms of believability. With Superman, the world truly suffered when he surrendered who he was to become someone else. With Peter, it never really makes sense as to why he would want to be Spidey again, especially since his life improved once he surrendered the persona. The death of Doc Oc at the end was unnecessary as was Harry's pause when he could have killed Pete and finally gain vengeance for the death of his father.

Overall this was a fun movie. The best comic book movie, not quite. There is great writing and a good arc, but deep down it just rings hollow as to why Pete would want to remain Spidey.

For devoted fans and nonfans alike, Spider-Man offers nothing less--and nothing more--than what you'd expect from a superhero blockbuster. Having proven his comic-book savvy with the original Darkman, director Sam Raimi brings ample energy and enthusiasm to Spidey's origin story, nicely establishing high-school nebbish Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) as a brainy outcast who reacts with appropriate euphoria--and well-tempered maturity--when a "super-spider" bite transforms him into the amazingly agile, web-shooting Spider-Man. That's all well and good, and so is Kirsten Dunst as Parker's girl-next-door sweetheart. Where Spider-Man falls short is in its hyperactive CGI action sequences, which play like a video game instead of the gravity-defying exploits of a flesh-and-blood superhero. Willem Dafoe is perfectly cast as Spidey's schizoid nemesis, the Green Goblin, and the movie's a lot of fun overall. It's no match for Superman and Batman in bringing a beloved character to the screen, but it places a respectable third. --Jeff Shannon

Spiderman PG-13
Sam Raimi

This movie is about an ordinary boy named Peter Parker who is played by Toby Maguire gets the unexpected when a spider bite changes life. Later that day Peter's dad also gets the unexpected when he was testing a formula on him for the air force but something went wrong. When Peter finds out he has to defeat he green goblin learns what his uncle Ben said to Peter before he got shot with great power comes great responsibility. Peter also must protect M.J. who gets in a lot of trouble. Now Spider man must save New York City from the green goblin.
I think that this greatly written movie deserves a two thumbs up and I would rate this movie a 9/10.
This movie was really great but should not be seen by like really young kids because there was little to much violence for those kinds of kids.

SPIDER-MAN

In the beginning of the movie Spider-man, a nerdy kid named Peter Parker got bit by a spider during a field trip to a museum / lab. The spider gave him special powers. He was able to climb walls, and squart webs. Then he started making costumes. After that he looked for cars to buy in the news paper. But, he needed to fine a way to get the money. He found a way it was wrestling the prize was $3000 if you can last 3minutes in the ring with Bone Saw. Spider-man (Peter Parker) won in 2minutes. There for he ended up getting $100. At the same time Peter was getting the money a robber came in and stole all the money. He killed Uncle Ben for the car. Spider-man follwed him to a building the robber backed up fell out of a window and ended dieing. Peter made a new costume, and later in the movie he met the green goblin. When Aunt May, Mary Jane, a Peter Parker, Harry, and his father Norman Osborn were eating a big dinner, the green goblin found out Spider-Man was Peter Parker. IN the end when the green goblin died Peter Parker saw that he was Norman Osborn.
I thought that this was a very good movie especially the ending. I recommend this to every one in the world. I guarantee you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars Great service.......2007-06-09

What is left to say? Amazon's service is great - and the movie was delivered as though I just picked it up from the manufacturer.

Spiderman was not a movie typical of my normal purchases, but I'm glad I bought it. It has a great story line and has something for everyone - even women like the movie. The movie industry has worked hard to make their movies more appealing to a wider audience, and they hit a home run with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Superheros and Comic Gods - Our Modern Mythos.......2007-06-05

A lovely, good-looking and fine-spirited adventure of a boy and his commitments to self, as he passes into adult spider-hood. Spiderman is a modern myth, our hero is the anonymous Perseus, the successful Icarus, masked for humility, or vanity's sake.

The familial threads are touching, and Cliff Robertson's `Uncle Ben' might get you welling at the eyes. The story is well-fleshed and animated, and sometimes, too plucky.

Sam Raimi is so versed in light-comic storytelling that he doesn't miss an opportunity to goose the material good-naturedly. Perhaps a silent moment or two would have added a touch of grandeur.

But he gets so much right, and it's joyous, and so much fun you forgive it it's occasional silliness.

Superheroes in ancient and modern myth are often overgrown boys propelled by a loss of family.. they seek their father's approval and to re-attach with their lost mothers..

Superman, orphaned in space, is nothing without earth, and his adopted earth-mother is Metropolis... Batman was orphaned in Gotham City, the place he returns to enact constant, remorseful vengeance, seeking catharsis for his anger.

And Peter Parker, parentless, but raised by loving relatives, takes flight in the only American city with a downtown long and tall enough to support his peculiar gifts; New York, which he protects, even as it torments him. It supplies both an endless series of potential casualties for him to save and quiet hiding places far above the noise of the world.

Whatever flaws you can find in costuming, line-reading, etc, you'll be enchanted by the freedom and power of his impossible movement...the inspiring beauty of his muscular near-flight, held aloft on sticky organic threads spewed and strewn among the arches and shoulders of his mothering, antagonistic, tormenting, beloved and inextricable city.
