Description

Helen Mirren (Prime Suspect, The Clearing) stars in this compelling murder-mystery set amid the murky underworld of illegal art trade.

Maggie Sheridan (Mirren), once one of the most famous blues voices of her generation, lost decades of her life to drinking and hard-living. After a failed suicide attempt, she was taken in by Sir Charles Stafford (Iain Cuthbertson, Antonia and Jane) and his son Sebastian (Iain Glen, Tomb Raider). She has lived quietly on their Irish estate for ten years. But one summer evening, her peaceful life is shattered when Sir Charles is brutally murdered, and a valuable sixteenth century painting is stolen. The painting is one of several disturbing pictures sent to Sir Charles marking the major events in his life.

Maggie is convinced that the stolen painting holds the key to Sir Charles' death and decides to track it down. Meanwhile, Sebastian uncovers a terrible secret, with horrific consequences.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not Mirren's best work.......2007-04-20

The protagonist is not very sympathetic, the plot line is pretty weak, not very compelling after the first minutes. Watch another one of her movies instead.

2 out of 5 stars Painted Lady --- Boring Lady!.......2007-03-12

Nothing but a star vehicle for Mirren. No wonder she is a co-producer. She overacts like it's going out of style. Story line totally ludicrous, windier than the top of a hill, hideous music. I am sorry I purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars Top Flight PBS Masterpiece Theatre DVD!.......2007-01-25

Both episodes of "Painted Lady" are included on this FINE-AAA+++ DVD with Helen Mirren starring in a very different role for this exceptional Leading Lady. Definitely a high suspense story that starts with well crafted character building and then explodes into an intriguing plot with exploration of all the character's human strengths, as well as their weaknesses, centered around a stolen painting--a masterpiece of it's type--and the effort to recover it from the all too evil UK criminal element that forcefully "acquired" it. A not completely "film noire" story line, the script has it's humorous moments to balance the difficult and sometimes tragic events shown in this eventful and sometimes shocking and seedy--but with good taste--quest to recover the painting, and hopefully to redeem the various character's failings at the end (I'm not telling!). If you 1] value PBS Masterpiece Theatre's superb programming and 2] enjoy watching Helen Mirren literally BECOME the character she portrays, this is a MUST HAVE DVD to be viewed--say twice a year to keep it fresh?--as a treat in believable "high drama"!

5 out of 5 stars Helen Mirren shines...........2007-01-11

again! I am so addidicted to her portrayal as DCI Tenison it is so wonderful to see Helen Mirren's range is truly diverse.

5 out of 5 stars Helen Mirren & Masterpiece Theatre at its best.......2006-10-18

The nicest part of owning the DVD version of a Masterpiece Theatre mini-series is that the entire series is edited to play like a continuous 3.5 hour feature length film and you can watch the entire series in one night. The Painted Lady is one of the more innovative, compelling and consistently intriguing English mysteries to be produced by the Masterpiece set. Though this addition to the Masterpiece Theatre collection will appeal to devotees of the series, there are enough original elements here to win the kinds of viewers who may be turned off by some of the stuffier BBC productions. This one, while staid enough to keep the loyalists, is also hip enough to win a new legion of followers.

Like many English mysteries this one examines not crime so much as social relationships and this glimpse into the mysteries of British class and character is one of the most interesting that I've seen. Helen Mirren plays "Maggie Sheridan", a British Isles pop star whose bluesy-rock voice tinged with just the right amount of Celtic grandeur made her one of the biggest stars of the sixties and early seventies but due to a combination of hard-living and bad relationship choices she went from star to down and outer virtually overnight. Lucky for her, longtime family friend Sir Charles Stafford and his son Sebastian allowed her to crash in a cottage on their family estate when she hit rock bottom and its there that she has been sitting out the last two decades (the 80's & 90's) of her life. When we first see Maggie she seems to be wearing the same hairstyle and clothes she probably wore twenty years earlier and she just seems to be driftin' from one day to the next in a kind of drug & alcohol induced has-been haze livin' a care free & rent free life with her musician boyfriend. But then something wakes her up.

One night art thieves break into the main house and Sir Charles Stafford is murdered while trying to prevent them from stealing the one treasure that is sacred to him: the portrait of his dead wife. Sir Charles' death disgusts Maggie; it stirs her out of her nostalgic haze and opens her eyes to contemporary realities. When the police fail to catch the thieves Maggie decides to take matters into her own hands. Though this miniseries is ostensibly about Maggie's attempt to hunt down a murderer the real excitement is in watching Maggie transform her life. She goes from looking and acting like a cultural refugee held captive by the rememberance of things past into an international mover and shaker who is as intrigued with her own untapped potentials and newly discovered freedom as we are. If she is to succesfully infiltrate the international art community and catch Sir Charles's killer Maggie must not only learn about art history and the ins and outs of the art market but she must don an entirely new persona (as an eastern European countess no less). Maggie not only takes to her new identity but she really seems to come to life in this new role she's fashioned for herself; it's as if she has finally found a role that gives her life meaning, purpose, and direction and she actually enjoys playing it. Once "Maggie" the folkie drop-out becomes "Magdelena" the art dealer/detective there is no limit to what she is capable of. Mirren accomplishes the near impossible task of making this transformation seem believable. She does such a good job at playing both Maggie/Magdalena that we never really question it but only marvel at the fact that some people can and do change.

Maggie's transformation into Magdelena occurs against an ever-changing backdrop of social settings not one of which seems to shake the versatile Maggie/Magdelena who seems to inherently know how to act in all situations. Through her eyes we get a glimpse of every imaginable social space and every imaginable social type. Only Helen Mirren could make it seem so natural to be so many different things to so many different people. When Maggie is living on the estate we see her relate to her musician boyfriend in one way and to Sir Charles in another, when she goes to London we see her relate with her gentrified bourgeois sister in one way and her sister's husband in another, and when we see her in New York City we see her relate with international art connoisseur Robert Tassi (played by Franco Neri) in one way and in quite another way with ex-flame Eddie Mullen (played by Roland Gift) . And every performance is seamless. Mirren makes it seem like her character is not conflicted in the least but is simply a facinating myriad-minded individual who inhabits the world in her own way.

Maggie/Magdelena's most fascinating attribute may just be her ability to see through the haze of class that seems to blind everyone else. English mysteries are almost always about the license and liberties of the upper crust and the envy of those less fortunate and this series is no exception. The Masterpiece Theatre lens loves to gaze upon impossibly posh estates and their impossibly posh inhabitants as they go about their business within rooms littered with historical paintings and artifacts but that lens is also very curious and it loves to have a look in to the musty old closets and attics and graveyards as well. The secrets contained within those dark spaces show that the markers of social class are invaribaly superficial and that two things are always certain: 1) that the life of the cultured is never as far removed from the life of the streets as the cultured would like to think, and, 2) that the social markers of wealth and cultivation and high living are also invariably markers of moral and ethical compromise and decay. Maggie/Magdelena is fascinating and she succeeds magnificently precisely because she is comfortable with both of these truths which would unnerve most others.

During Maggie/Magdelena's investigation of Sir Charles' murder she must negotiate the art world and the underworld and ultimately she finds that they are each populated by equally seedy types. Occupying a middle ground between these two extremes is the gentrified bourgeois who like to imagine that they are part of an incorruptible majority, but the landed gentry (the middle-aged professionals) just come off as self-deluding hypocrits in this clever mystery which is, among other things, a critique of the habits and practices of each echelon of the social world. If Maggie/Magdelena fares better than most by stories end its because she knows the world better than most as a result of her having inhabited so many roles and seen the world from so many different angles. So although the plot of this film is rather mandarin (the "Sebastian" sub or co-plot intrigues and frustrates in equal measures; and the critique of the aristocracy and its self-serving alliances may seem overwrought) its really only a minor distraction in an otherwise immensely enjoyable and remarkably well conceived study of character and class.

This is a Masterpiece Theatre that is hip to contemporary social realites and thus current & relevant. Plus Helen Mirren has never given a more versatile and more interesting performance. Her character defies the idea that a person's character is defined by class and her character defies the idea that a person must have only one character. And this last point is what really lingers in your mind long after you've put the DVD back in its case and the case back on its shelf.

Based on the bestselling novel by Scott Turow (Presumed Innocent), Reversible Errors presents a first-rate cast in a penetrating look at the death penalty. The made-for-TV movie begins in 1991 when small-time thief Rommy "Squirrel" Gandolph (Glen Plummer) is convicted of triple homicide and sentenced to death. Larry Starczek (Tom Selleck), the detective on the case, also happens to be involved with prosecuting attorney Muriel Wynn (Monica Potter). Seven years later, he's still single, she's married, and her old colleague, attorney Arthur Raven (William H. Macy), is assigned to Gandolph's final appeal. Former judge Gillian Sullivan (Felicity Huffman), who presided over Gandolph's trial (and has since done time for bribery) becomes his unlikely ally. The Emmy-winning Selleck (Magnum P.I.) is in typically fine form, but real-life couple Macy and Huffman steal the show by virtue of the greater complexity of--and chemistry between--their flawed, but noble characters. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    5 out of 5 stars huffman again.......2007-06-30

Huffman shines in a star turn about the death penalty. republicans will not like this movie because they will have to THINK, Peo-ple!!! Huffman is brilliant acting as her character in this. SOme people may wish she was better looking in the face as she is kind of frumpy, but she isn't Julia Roberts and doesn't want to be!!!

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT SELLER!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-10-12

DVD arrived promptly, as described, well packaged. I would gladly buy from again!!

4 out of 5 stars MR. AND MRS. MACY'S PARADE.......2005-02-24

This well done adaptation of Scott Turow's novel is a made for tv miniseries, and features an outstanding cast in a complex, but riveting story. William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman (Mrs. Macy) get the acting honors, as their characters are more fleshed out and flawed, and their performances are wonderfully controlled and executed. Not to take anything away from the other actors: Tom Selleck as the cop whose devotion to his ex-lover makes him break the law; Monica Potter as the up and coming attorney who looks like she's going to be the city's next prosecuting attorney; James Rebhorn as the security cop whose dying secret gives the plot a strange twist; Glenn Plummer as the halfwitted Squirrel who confesses to a triple murder; Shemar Moore as the loudmouthed con who finds Jesus and has his own little secrets. Since this is a tv miniseries, the pacing does slow down some times and handicaps the movie's suspense, but overall it's an entertaining, well done film buoyed by the star turns of the Macys.

    2 out of 5 stars Long, Boring.......2005-01-17

This was so long and drawn out. It took over 3 hours for this film to lay out what any crime show could have done on TV in an hour, including all the commercials. There were so many scenes that just went ON and ON - that's what they make DVDs for: to cut out long useless scenes to add to the "deleted scenes" special edition, so people who actually liked the movie can watch more of it, haha. acting wasn't even very good and not always very believable. just CHEESY. save yourselves 3 hours of your life.

also, i have no idea why one reviewer thought there was no sex. though it really wasn't as violent as most movies, still it's no family movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great Character Study.......2004-12-30

I enjoyed this film. It's probably Tom Selleck's best role and Shamar Moore did his character justice as well. Once I saw the ending I replayed the entire DVD to go back and catch things the second time. Knowing what motivated the prinicpal characters made it even more enjoyable the second time through. This was a great film and it shows that a thriller can be great without the sex and extreme violence.

    Description

Terror by Night (1946) hints at a few of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories. The action takes place on a speeding steam train racing from London to Edinburgh. Lady Margaret Carstairs possess a 423 karat diamond, known as the 'Star of Rhodesia' and her son employs Holmes to protect the priceless jewel until it reaches its home in Scotland. Lady Margaret's son is found murdered and the 'Star of Rhodesia' has been whisked away. Eccentric and suspicious passengers line the Scotland Express as Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and Inspector Lestrade (Dennis Hoey) investigate. Along for the ride is an old friend of Watson's, Major Duncan-Bleek (Alan Mowbray), who may or may not be as disinterested a party as he appears.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sherlock and the Diamond.......2006-01-26

The Basil Rathbone - Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes films were moved from Victorian England to current England (1946). Also, like the James Bond films, the only thing similar to the books is the title. If you are looking for faithful adaptation of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle books then get the Jeremy Brett Mystery series. If you are looking for some great acting and good period mysteries, the Rathbone - Bruce series is great.

Lady Carstairs is taking the train from London to Edinburgh with The Star of Rhodesia. Holmes and Watson are hired to protect it from master jewel thief Colonel Moran, who also happens to be a master of disguise. To make things more intriguing, Lady Carstairs son, Roland, is murdered on the train. This is probably one of the more typical plots but is set entirely on a train.

The transfer quality is fairly poor but not awful. These are the kind of films that are not usually subject to restoration and the deteriorated status is that of wear and age. I have seen a new collection but they are quite expensive. So if you just want to have a copy of the films just to enjoy these mysteries, these are fine.

Of course, for most Basil was Sherlock Holmes, this was probably the first films that he had a chance to a role that he could use his substantial talent. Before these, he was usually the bad guy or a minor supporting player. He was an accomplished swordsman and the joke was he constantly had to lose to actors that he could beat blindfolded. So Basil made these quickie films much more depth than they would otherwise have.

    4 out of 5 stars SUSPENSEFUL!!!.......2005-09-30

What makes this a masterpiece "who done it" is that everyone acts suspicious.
Holmes is hired by Roland Carstairs to guard the Star of Rhodesia, a magnificent diamond being transported from London to Edinburgh. Holmes replaces the diamond with a fake that ends up being stolen and Carstairs is murdered. Now, the question is who stole the fake one and killed Carstairs. But Carstairs is not the only one to get murdered. There WILL be others, and for some of you who are trying to figure out who the fiend is, you might just be surprised when the very one you thought done the killing, ends up being killed themselves. Black and White with no curse words or sexual situations and no bloody gore. Just a superb plot with a fairly good directed movie.
I say fairly good because the way the train was shown speeding down the track was obviously done by fast forwarding the film. If a real train was to cut a corner like that one did in the movie, it'd flip off the track. But overall this is a movie worth watching, with great action and suspense(one scene in particular that comes to mind is where Holmes fights desperately to keep from being literally thrown off the train), also, there is drama, intrique, and horror. This is one you can enjoy watching alone to figure out who done it, or share with a friend, family members, or mate.
Get something to eat, preferably buttered popcorn and a Coke (or as I like to eat, Banner chocolate covered almonds and a Coke), turn out the lights, and by all means, make sure you put your sofa or chair against the wall as you enjoy this entertaining film. If you like a good mystery, you'll want to order this one.

    1 out of 5 stars TEDIUM ON A TRAIN.......2005-04-10

Tedious Sherlock Holmes entry that can't be salvaged even with the casting of the best theatrical Holmes and Watson; Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. The speeding train makes for a limited cinematic experience, and Bruce's Watson comes off more imbesole than sidekick. The bigger mystery is where the title comes from; although the train travels at night, 'terror' is not the word that comes to mind.

    4 out of 5 stars A train caper featuring a high-stakes jewel heist .......2004-10-04

Terror By Night offers a nice change of pace in the old Sherlock Holmes series of films starring Basil Rathbone as the great detective. The action takes place completely outside the confines of London and 221B Baker Street, centering on a train ride from London to Edinburgh. Holmes has been hired to safeguard an ill-fated diamond called the Star of Rhodesia on Lady Margaret Carstairs' trip home, but he's not alone. Good old Inspector Lestrade is also onboard, posing as a fisherman on holiday. Despite the presence of Holmes, Watson, and Lestrade, though, Lady Margaret's son is murdered and the jewel stolen. The jewel must be in one of the compartments onboard the train, and Lestrade quickly takes over the questioning and searching of the passengers. Dr. Watson - God bless him - also attempts his own investigation, which bears only ignominious - and comical - results.

There are a number of real characters onboard the train, each one of them suspicious in some way or other. There's a rather impertinent young lady accompanying her mother's coffin, a most disagreeable professor, an older couple concerned about the police presence around them, Watson's old friend Major Duncan-Bleek, as well as several train employees. The fact that we the viewers are kept unaware of the culprit's identity until the end is a definite plus - as is the fact that the guilty party turns out to be a jewel thief of much renown. There's as much light comedy as there is drama until the endgame is set in motion, and the ending offers a surprise or two that rescues the film from the realm of the merely average. Terror By Night is not the best of the Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films, but it's certainly an entertaining, reasonably compelling entry in the series.

    4 out of 5 stars A ticket to mystery.......2004-06-30

This is not the best of the Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce pairings but nonetheless this is an enjoyable outing.
Terror by Night is one of those I put on late at night to watch curled up on the sofa with a cat by my side. The rhythm of the train and the steadfast bond between Holmes, Watson and Lestrade creates one of the most relaxing murder mysteries ever put on film. The deliberate pace may not please all, but to those with a taste for it this is the mystery equivalent of a good house wine.

2 out of 5 stars Not Even Twin Belas Can Save This One.......2005-01-06

This is a dull mystery centered around the inventor of a television system. Suddenly, the inventor is killed right as he is making a broadcast. Whodunit? Prime among the suspects is Bela Lugosi, who plays the inventor's assistant. But no, it's not Bela. We discover him to be just another red herring as he is killed later on in the film. However, all is not lost. Bela's twin brother (?), a federal inspector, shows up and in only five minutes, unmasks the killer. Why couldn't he have shown up thirty minutes before and saved us all this dull talk? Look for Hattie McDaniel in an early role as the stereotypical servant. This obscure feature (it scarcely played any dates when originally released back in 1935) is recommended only for die-hard mystery fans and hardcore Bela fans.

3 out of 5 stars Why are people so shocked..........2004-11-24

to "discover" this isn't exactly a cinematic classic?? Just the title and the fact that Lugosi is in it pretty much tell that story (let's face it; after Dracula, Bela did nothing but B and C movies except for an occisional cameo). The one actor really wasted here is Hattie McDaniel. Be that as it may, the movie's amusing in its own Ed Woodish sort of way. Interesting more as a history capsule of sorts, due to the early reference to TV.

    4 out of 5 stars Shockingly lousy!.......2003-06-20

I suppose we're all being murdered by television to some degree but here the title is somewhat miseading. Its not really murder BY television (as in forcing someone to watch Jim Carey, for example) but murder ON television.

This minor quibble aside, MBT is incomprehensible, dull, has offensive racial stereotypes and acting not unlike Plan 9. So what's not to like? I knocked off one star as this isn't one of Bella's films that also stars the Bowery Boys...sigh...

Oh - to add to the hilarity the print has more scratches than a driver's ed movie with some bits spliced out altogether. In short, its great! Highly reccomended.

2 out of 5 stars An exceedingly dull, disappointing whodunit.......2003-03-19

In the early days of cinema, it seems like every third movie involved a murder, after which the authorities would not allow anyone to leave the house before the mystery was solved. Murder By Television is a rather poor representative of that type of movie. I like my plots to make sense, and this movie kept me rather confused from the very start. Worse, the final solution to the crime seems to me as if it was just made up out of thin air. The murder victim in this case is a television pioneer whose plans for a technological breakthrough are in high demand. As he is broadcasting his message to the few people lucky enough to actually have a TV, he suddenly collapses. There are several suspects, as one or two of the guests seem to be doing something akin to spying for a rival television company or two. The inventor's assistant, played by Bela Lugosi, is another prime suspect. There's another guy who keeps snooping around outside and sneaking in the house, but for some reason I don't understand the cops just keep throwing the guy out the door without asking him any questions. The ultimate solution to the crime partly relies upon one of the oldest tricks in the book, a plot device that was surely old and tired as early as 1935. Bela Lugosi is about the only thing this movie has going for it, but his character is by no means interesting. Almost everyone just seemed to be going through the motions on this one, and the result is a flat, forgettable film. The one exception is Hattie McDaniel, whom I was surprised but delighted to find in this pre-Gone With the Wind motion picture. Of course, her character is just one big stereotype, which makes her performance much less enjoyable than it would be otherwise.

Taken from Australian TV, Still Twisted is an anthology of four vignettes. Starting off the collection is the tale of a young woman who hits a pedestrian and drives off, only to have her conscience get the better of her and eventually find out that there's a nasty twist to the story. The second installment is the story of an ex-ballroom champion and lonely divorced dad with some skeletons in his closet. The third (and perhaps the best) segment involves an overconfident hit man who gets an unexpected comeuppance. Rounding out the collection is a claustrophobic story of a woman trapped in a remote railway station with a strange clerk. Hosted by producer Bryan Brown, Still Twisted shows its TV roots but is still creepy, worthwhile fare. Think The Twilight Zone or Alfred Hitchcock Presents with a Down Under accent. --Jerry Renshaw

4 out of 5 stars creepy edge-of-your-seat suspense that will please most fans.......1999-11-05

this movie is actually a trilogy of three short stories, with creepy, yet sometimes predicatble twists at the end. The first story contained the best surprise, and the last story was the worst. the second story was the most atmospheric and also had a twisty ending. If you avoid the last segment and stick with the first two, this is a movie that will be enjoyed.
