This is another Masters of Horror entry by Stuart Gordon. Jeffrey Combs is Edgar Allan Poe, looking for inspiration for his next work. His wife is dying of TB. His alcoholism won't go away. His debts are mounting. And on top of that the most irritating black cat keeps popping up at the wrong times...

I'm tempted to recommend this just for Jeffrey Combs, famed cult actor. I can't say if his Poe is historically accurate, but he gives a charged performance and with the costuming he looks reasonably like the original article. Gordon captures the spirit of Poe's horror literature well, with a build-up of mood and tension as sanity fails and madness takes over. There are also some stand-out bits of gore as well; I agree with the previous reviewer, if you like cats, don't watch this. It's not a very pet-friendly film.

The film does get off to a slow start, and for awhile you wonder if you're watching a history channel biopic until things pick up. Really, the only semi-strike against The Black Cat is that you know beforehand how it turns out. Making Poe the central character means he obviously has to live through the events so he can be inspired and write about them. But the joy of this piece is not in any final twists or reveals, but in seeing one of literature's greatest horror stories adapted for the screen.

If you can handle the pet violence, add this to your horror library.

Eye-Opening Adaptation.......2007-06-13

The Black Cat, directed by Stuart Gordon and written by Dennis Paoli & Stuart Gordon, features the great Edgar Allen Poe (Jeffrey Combs), out of literary inspiration and short on cash, tormented by an inky feline who will either destroy his sanity or spur him to write one of his greatest horror stories ever.

It's nice to see Stuart Gordon's take on something other than H.P. Lovecraft (I haven't seen Edmund yet). I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised by his take on The Black Cat and it might just be my favorite of his work to date aside from the first Re-Animator film.

Gordon does an amazing job of turning the emotional but bloodless work of Poe and turning it into a grand guignol good time, and while he may not look the part as much as, say, Christina Ricci, Combs makes for a highly believable Poe.

Everything from the bit parts, to the set decoration, to the animal actors is top-notch in The Black Cat. Don't miss this one... it's (sorry) the cat's meow!

Descending Into Madness--The "Horror"-ible Life Of Edgar Allen Poe.......2007-05-14

As a huge "Re-Animator" fan, I really looked forward to Stuart Gordon's contribution to Showtime's "Masters of Horror" anthology series. Season One brought us "H.P. Lovecraft's Dreams in the Witch-House"--which sadly was not one of my favorites. Season Two's offering is "The Black Cat." But while I enjoyed this episode much better, I still don't know how warmly it will be embraced by those seeking out this series. Not a conventional horror story, "The Black Cat" is a historical (but fictional) account of the life of Edgar Allen Poe. The tale documents a descent into madness and its horror is derived from this--whether or not that seems entertaining may be a matter of opinion.

The episode features Jeffrey Combs (always a delight) as Poe. Struggling and impoverished, he lives in a dark and unpleasant dwelling with his ill wife. Attempting to sell his poetry to survive, he is also sinking into desperation, alcoholism and insanity. There really isn't much more plot than that--this is a story that is reliant on mood rather than narrative. Combs does well with the various aspects of Poe's dementia and there is plenty of macabre humor interspersed. Haunted by visions of his wife and menaced by household pets, there are moments of real gruesomeness and gore to be appreciated.

I enjoyed the film's literary references and setup as a fan of Poe, but some may find the beginning a bit slow. The tale takes a while to develop--but that never bothered me. The ending does maintain a frantic pace and has some great effects, but if you're a lover of animals--you might want to steer clear. Combs is a uniquely engaging actor and this is a must-see for his fans. Otherwise, I'll issue a cautious recommendation. About 3 1/2 stars for me, and that's about my average for most episodes of "Masters of Horror." KGHarris, 05/07.

Time has shown this 80s thriller to be a more durable, intriguing film than first it may have seemed. Debra Winger is at her most gorgeous, and the chemistry between her character and Theresa Russell's 'black widow' is palpable. I loved the colourful locations and the sense of glowing health of the cast. People who haven't seen it before will notice the 80s-style male chauvinism, but it doesn't detract from the movie. Great to see the portrayal of several murders without one violent scene or one spurt of blood. A genuinely adult movie.

Sexy, stylish thriller.......2007-04-25

BLACK WIDOW is a sexy and stylish thriller, mainly notable for the always-reliable Debra Winger playing a gutsy female investigator.

When several rich older men all die in sudden, bizarre circumstances, government investigator Alexandra Bates (Debra Winger) becomes convinced a common link will lead to one individual. Alex's theory later leads her across the path of Theresa (Catherine Russell), a woman with untold fortunes and several husbands. Determined that she is the 'Black Widow', Alex befriends her in Hawaii, and later becomes part of a sordid love triangle with the next intended victim of Catherine's plot. BLACK WIDOW is filled with enough chills and thrills to hook any audience.

Debra Winger, in one of the rare times she doesn't play the dying tragedienne, delivers an excellent performance as Alex, a woman trying to exist within the male-dominated world of government intelligence. She is the only one who truly holds this movie together. Catherine Russell brings a chilling, glacial quality to the role of Theresa/Rennie, the black widow of the title. The cast also features Diane Ladd, Sami Frey, Nicol Williamson, Dennis Hopper, James Hong, and Mary Woronov.

A Two Person Noir.......2005-06-26

You can just about forget everyone else in this film other than Debra Winger and Theresa Russell. This sexy film is basically a two person film noir shot in bright colors, some of it in Hawaii. It is filled with excitement and seduction. Both the leads are wonderful to watch, their chemistry magnificent in this Bob Rafelson (Man Trouble, Five Easy Pieces) film.

Debra Winger is Alex Barnes, bogged down in a government desk job dealing with statistics. But when she sees a pattern of deaths that lead to Theresa Russell, a dangerously beautiful woman with ice in her veins, she becomes obsessed with catching a killer. Theresa Russell, who has used more names than Jason Bourne, is just as smart as she is sexy, and almost the entire film is one long seduction scene as Russell spins her web around Alex.

It seems a lot of rich men have suddenly died on Russell and Alex knows why. She is what is called a Black Widow, a woman who mates and then kills. No one has found any evidence to prove it, however, and Alex's attempt to catch her at it becomes murky as a seduction begins to take place.

The locations and the stars are beautiful and as Winger and Russell circle each other in this game with deadly stakes you can't take your eyes off them. Winger's Alex is smart and determined, but vulnerable, and Russell gives a flawless and sexy performance as a smart and icy beauty with a heart full of venom.

The electricity between the two characters jumps off the screen. The pool scene where they first meet gives us an indication of what is to come as Alex attempts to get close to Russell, with some unexpected twists. The formost of these is a scene when Alex gives Russell a Black Widow pendant, a spider who mates and kills its lover. Russell's response plays with the fragile but determined Alex as she begins to doubt herself.

You don't want to miss this one. It's gorgeous to look at and has two riveting performances from Winger and Russell. You can't find a better one than this.

In this collection you find one of the cineastic highlights of the 30ties; "The Black Cat", directed by Edgar G. Ulmer; a fantastic variation of the old Edgar Allan Poe - Story; crossed with demonic memoires of the 1st World War - Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi have been in this war, one has become a victim, his love ans life destroyed, the other is a human monster, responsible for the death of thousends of soldiers and a sick collector of female beauty. The setting is a Bauhaus-building on a mountain, where the battlefield was, a kind of futuristic mausoleum. This film was made in Austria in 1934, the time of fascism, and you can smell the near danger of Nazi-Terror. John J. Mescall is a genius on camera. I think this movie is singular in the history of gothic art. The other movies are good exampels for the singular art of the Dracula-actor Bela Lugosi.

Should have been titled Lugosi/Karloff collection.......2007-04-25

This box set of movies captures Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff at the height of their respective careers. Both are highlighted here in 5 different films that allow them to share the spotlight and explore some fairly meaty roles. Especially in the "The Black Cat" A particularly subtle yet brutal horror tale pitting Lugosi against Karloff in a twisted psychological battle of revenge, mysticism and devil worship. Very much ahead of it's time in both subject matter and brutality. The makeup, set design, mood and lighting are quite memorable.

All 5 movies though are quite enjoyable, and while tame compared to today's horror fare, they still explore some weighty subjects with an appropriate amount of abject horror and suspense.

It's fun to review some of the details of each of these movies, and pick out small little mistakes and missed edits. A particular example is seen in "The Invisible Ray" watch closely as Walter Kingsford as he plays a murdered Sir Francis Stevens. He is lying on the bed as Lugosi shines a bright light into his face to snap a couple of photos. After Lugosi turns off the bright light, Kigsford obviously blinks his eyes, even though he's supposed to already be dead. pretty funny, and the first time I watched the movie, I could hardly believe the obvious mistake.

At any rate, all 5 movies are entertaining, well written, and provided both Lugosi and Karloff with vehicles with which to display their talent.

Highly recommended for any classic horror buffs.

Horrors!.......2007-02-05

Universal Pictures has had a number of different movie openings over the years, but my favorite has always been one of its oldest, the one showing the airplane flying around the Universal Globe. This opening is shown on several films in the Bela Lugosi Collection, which is just another little perk in a generally decent set.

Three of the movies (all on Side One of the single disc) are loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe stories. In Murders in the Rue Morgue, Lugosi plays a demented showman at a circus. His show features an ape that is willing to kill for his master. Lugosi also has an obsession with creating some sort of ape-human hybrid, and if a few women need to die in the process, so be it. Although not the most well-written of movies, it does have a nice look to it, with that eerie German Expressionist influence that is seen in other horror films of the period. This is also the only film in the set that doesn't also include Boris Karloff.

The Black Cat has Lugosi in a more heroic role as a man out for vengeance against Karloff's villainous Satanist, who years earlier had committed a treasonous act that led to Lugosi's imprisonment. Now Lugosi and a honeymooning couple are at Karloff's estate where both characters plot against each other. In a nice contrast to the standard old dark houses, the setting for this film is a futuristic mansion.

The Raven has Lugosi returning to evil as a doctor obsessed with a woman whose life he has saved. He also is an avid Poe fan, leading him to set up some nasty traps (especially a deadly pendulum). Karloff is a fugitive who is forced to help Lugosi in his schemes. These are probably Lugosi's and Karloff's best roles in the set.

The Side Two movies put Lugosi in distinctly supporting roles. The Invisible Ray features Karloff as a scientist who is irradiated by a strange element, one that threatens to kill him, but also gives him a lethal touch and a homicidal mania. Lugosi plays a doctor again, this time one who creates a serum that offsets the effect of the radiation. The science is awful, but the movie itself is fun.

The final film, Black Friday, has Lugosi in a minor role as a gangster. Karloff plays one of his mad scientist roles, this time a brain surgeon who transplants part of a gangster's brain into his dying friend's. Here the acting laurels go to Stanley Ridge's as the man whose personality alternates between kindly literature professor and vicious gangster.

In the horror films of the `30s and '40s, Lugosi often played second fiddle to Karloff, and this set demonstrates why. Although Karloff himself is not at his best, he is definitely more skilled than Lugosi. That's not to say Lugosi is bad, but he can't steal a show the way Karloff can. As a Lugosi showcase, this is merely okay (and there aren't much in the way of extras) but the movies themselves are pretty fun. As a whole, this set gets a low four stars and should be enjoyed by fans of the classic era of Universal horror films.

Interesting variations on some Poe stories, though not extremely helpful... You get the feeling these guys were going through the motions here, reaching for material to take advantage of the sets and odd facial features they had at their disposal.

Horrible old movies you've got to love!.......2007-01-12

Anyone who loves to watch those old black and white horror movies will surely love to have this collection included in their DVD library. Not only do you get Bela doing his best to terrify you, but Karloff also comes along for the ride. At times the acting is bumpy, but, hey, that's what makes these movies so much fun to watch. So get the popcorn ready, dim the lights, and be prepared to be intertained.

SHOULD I KILL CREED?.......2007-07-06

In what seems like the final volume of the series (it isn't), all of the major players of Black Cat come together for a climactic battle. Sven and the others have joined the "Sweeper's Alliance", an assemblage of elite Sweepers who all want the billion dollar bounty on Creed. The Alliance comes to the verge of collapse when its leader is revealed to be a Chronos Number! All of the Sweepers value their independence and honor and it will take a lot of convincing to get them to continue their mission. Chronos has its own plans to eliminate Creed, as Sephria and other Numbers also prepare to assault Creed's castle fortress. What's Creed doing during all this, you might ask? He's laid up on an operating table, being injected with Tao fluids combined with nanomachines. After the procedure, Creed fancies that he will be a god come unto the Earth. Even after all that's gone on, he still wants to convince Train to come over to his side. If Train refuses, Creed has decided that Black Cat deserves to die!

While you would expect the fireworks to really fly on this volume, it really suffered in the animation quality department. During the fiercest action scenes we are left with still images superimposed over backgronds, sometimes lazily being scooted across the screen in a limp attempt at motion. Or sometimes the characters are distorted and jumpy in an effort to look cool and kinetic. Neither of these techniques worked for me, and really stood out like black eyes. It made the series seem really cheap. But just because the action scenes suffered from a lack of money, I still enjoyed Volume 5 because of the characterization. Train is going to have make a choice in the end whether he should take his anger at Saya's death and turn it into bloody revenge, or should he honor Saya's spirit by letting go of his hate and acting like a Sweeper instead of a hitman. In the end, what was put on the line in the battles and the moral choices that had to be made were more important to me than the quality of the animation.

With the success of There's Something About Mary, the brothers Farrelly would seem to have inherited the dumb-comedy crown from the various talents who made Airplane! and its many descendants: Top Secret!, The Naked Gun, Hot Shots!. For the most part, that's true, but as Wrongfully Accused proves, there's a bit of life in the old shtick. Pat Proft, a screenwriter on The Naked Gun series and Hot Shots!, makes his directorial debut with this farce, which stars--surprise, surprise--Leslie Nielsen in a parody of the feature version of The Fugitive. More than that: Proft piles on joking references to a host of other dramas, including Casablanca, Mission: Impossible, and Braveheart. While the persistence of these inter-movie gags can wear a viewer down a bit, the fact is some of the silly stuff really does hit its target. If the progeny of Airplane! were to end with this movie, it would be a worthy way to say farewell to a once-good idea. The DVD includes trailers, a game, Dolby, audiovisual production notes, cast interviews, biographies and filmographies, English and French soundtracks, and English, French, and Spanish subtitles. A Ton Of Fun For Film Buffs.......2006-05-03

Since "The Fugitive" is one of my all-time favorites, this takeoff on it was a lot of fun for me to watch. Hey, sometimes it's best to laugh at ourselves and the things we like. For much of it, this movie was laugh-out-loud funny.

It helped not only to know "The Fugitive" story well but also "North By Northwest," "Casablanca" "Titantic," "Star Wars" and many, many other films, both classic and modern-day. The more familiar you are with movies, the more of these "inside" jokes are going to make you laugh. Being a movie buff, a lot of these gags connected and made me really have a good time watching this Leslie Nielsen farce.

Be warned, parents: this is not a family comedy. There are tons of sexual innuendos, so typical of today's comedies....but overall, this is really funny stuff and highly recommended if you watched a lot films in your lifetime.

What is the cost of redemption for the damned? It is a painful price always. Train's story is like Rurouni Kenshin! They were both powerful assassins! The cost of Kenshin's redemption was the death of his wife Tome, also Train's cost was Saya the girl whom he met and taught him the value of human life then died soon after. It is a wonderful anime full of series dramatic moment, action and funny light-hearted humor, but the theme stands out beautifully within the series. It broke my heart when Saya died early in the story while all the bad guys survived apparently. She was so lovely and full of life; exactly what Train needed to be human again but her death serves as a motive for Train to never kill again. The end is also similar to Rurouni Kenshin when we see Kenshin in the last scene continues the road he chose, also Train goes in his way as a free cat. This series also reminds me of Get Backers specially the relationship between Train and Sven. However, one can not compare this series to Kenshin at any degree. Kenshin is the greatest ever!

Creed has assembled all of the Tao powered supervillains of the series in an organization called "The Apostles of the Stars". He doesn't really see himself as evil though. In fact Creed thinks he will be able to free the world from the Illuminati-like control of Chronos and let mankind control its own destiny. Of course, a lot of maniacs think of themselves as saviors, and Creed isn't any different. He'd like nothing better than for Train to join him and is constantly frustrated and maddened by Train's continued devotion to the murdered Saya and his desire for revenge. Not all of the Apostles are bad though. One of its members, the fire-wielding Kyoko, has fallen in love with Train, and decides to defect, along with the tophat wearing Charden, who also admires Train. Train's old employer, Chronos, still has an interest in their best assassin, and Sephiria, the Number who trained Black Cat, is sent to scout out his intentions and decide whether he should be allowed to live.

Volume 4 of Black Cat was one of the better entries in an outstanding series, mostly because the stories were a bit quirkier than usual, and the animation was of a better quality. Sometimes, Black Cat pulls too many cheap camera shots to cover up for a lack of animation. This fourth volume also included some of the funniest episodes, such as Kyoko's sloppy love story and when Train and the others take the bounty for a lost lizard. Problem is, the lizard has grown to Godzilla like stature in the sewers beneath the city! It's not all fun and games as humor and cuteness mix up with drama when Train and Eve come to the aid of homeless orphans being threatened by the Yakuza. A really good volume.

The picture quality is clear and sharp. The sound is good. The cover-art gives a good impression of the DVD's contents.

Sven is your run-of-the-mill sweeper (a.k.a. bounty hunter) - down on his luck, haunted by the perpetual grumbling of his stomach and looking to make enough cash just to get by. Oh, and he can see the future, but only about five minutes into it. When a dirty politician lands a price on his head, this sweeper jumps at the chance to turn a quick buck. But as he's working to secure the target, his vision reveals an assassination that will cost him the job. when i got the box in the mail it was empty. called right away got a replacement the next day. this was a pre ordered item and did not recieve it until after december 19 when it came out and even paid the extra to have it before christmas. when i called they apologized and sent the replacement out the next day

Train Heartnet, better known as "The Black Cat", is a killer for the Chronos organization which ironically fancies itself as a force for justice in an otherwise unjust world. He takes on any job he is assigned, even if it means killing women and children. He's just that kind of a guy. But he's starting to question the meaning of it all, especially after he meets a beautiful kimono clad girl singing from her heart on the rooftops. She too carries a pistol, but instead of being a assassin, she's a "Sweeper", a bounty hunter, but she chooses never to kill her prey. She encourages Train to listen to his heart and do what HE wants to do, instead of just following orders blindly. There's also another sweeper in town, a white suited eye patch wearing guy named Sven, who can see the future with his covered eye. He keeps on crossing paths with Train because they're looking for the same people. But Sven wants to bring them in alive, not dead. When Sven agrees to rescue the kidnapped little sister of a woman he meets, he soon learns that Train is after the sister too...to kill her!

While I have not read the original manga version of this anime, I was aware of it, and was gladly surprised by some of the improvements on the character designs, especially the deletion of the fruity looking collar bell that Train wears in the manga. Train comes across as a very complicated and complex character, haunted by the decision to become an assassin when he was a child. He has been so numbed to his work, that he has become more like a robot than a man. It's nice to see a woman begin to turn him from that path, which makes it a bit more grown up than the usual Shonen Jump title. Sven is pretty much the lamebrain comedy relief of the piece, but he has his heroic moments as well. For most of this volume Train is the villain, but we see glimmers that he is set to return to the side of good. The animation was pretty good, but the character designs varied from average to poor, which was no fault of the anime staff, but of the manga-ka. For example, Train's pistol simply looks like the artist drew it still in the holster and thought this looked cool and inventive, when it just makes it look lazy. It would seem like you could at least design a cool-looking gun for your main character! I really liked this first volume and will continue watching. It also made me want to read the manga as well.

Well Rounded Anime!.......2007-01-01

I bought the first volume and watched it a few days ago and really enjoyed it. There is a ton of stuff I can type about it but I hate long reviews. The show is about an assassin for Chronos referred to as Black Cat with a tatoo of the number XIII. As the black cat tries to complete his assignments he is constantly twarted by a gentlemenly bounty hunter who can see the future. Funny anime with good character development.
