A volatile, toxic potion of satire and nihilism, road movie and science fiction, violence and comedy, the unclassifiable sensibility of Alex Cox's Repo Man is the model and inspiration for a potent strain of post-punk American comedy that includes not only Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), but also early Coen brothers (Raising Arizona, in particular), Men in Black, and even (in a weird way) The X-Files. Otto, a baby-face punk played by Emilio Estevez, becomes an apprentice to Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), a coke-snorting, veteran repo-man-of-honor prowling the streets of a Los Angeles wasteland populated by hoods, wackos, burnouts, conspiracy theorists, and aliens of every stripe. It may seem chaotic at first glance, but there's a "latticework of coincidence" (as Tracey Walter puts it) underlying everything. Repo Man is a key American movie of the 1980s--just as Taxi Driver, Nashville, and Chinatown are key American movies of the '70s. With a scorching soundtrack that features Iggy Pop, Fear, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Suicidal Tendencies. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Repo Man.......2007-07-08

This film with it's nihilist basis and emphasis on the healing power of alien cultures and technology, became a family favorite during the toughest years of blending. No holiday was complete without it. As a movie, I dunno, there's something new in it every time you see it. Hundreds (it seems) of subtle bits of humor. Family conversation is filled with little one liners like "put it on a plate, you'll enjoy it more". Repo Man isn't for everyone.
If you have strong religious convictions, better skip it. If you enjoy the humor in the dark side of human experience, consider giving it a try. The character's language is working class vernacular.

4 out of 5 stars So weird, eighties weird........2007-05-16

I bought this movie because it was inexpensive and, randomly, one of the lecturers in my bar exam review course mentioned it in his video lecture. He didn't know how to describe it, but claimed it reminded him of a some of the repo guys he'd met as a property lawyer. I don't really know how to describe it, either. It's sort of "Big Lebowski," but set in the eighties and with less drugs. The characters are all pretty messed up without drugs. It is surreal, and very random. You should give up on the plot and just enjoy the scenes as they come. The plot, such as it is, will work itself out. This is not a movie for people who need to understand things, who need everything to make sense. When I first watched it, I was strung out from studying for two months and didn't want to think any more. For me, it was perfect. Weird, ridiculous, and amusing. If you approach it with a similar attitude, I'll think you'll enjoy. :)

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Alex Cox's Best- Emilio Estevez's, too.......2007-04-19

This movie is truly amazing. It holds up to repeated viewing and I should know, because I've been watching it repeatedly since I bought it around ten years ago. You can just go on and on about the mountainous high points this film has, from Harry Dean Stanton, the western style camera work Alex Cox would later revisit in Straight to Hell, the crackpot philosophizing, the nonsensical alien conspiracy and ensuing government conspiracy, Rev. Larry, the cartoonish punk thugs, seedy Los Angeles, and some other little things like the dialogues ("I installed two ways mirrors in his place in Brentwood"), acting (everyone essentially "disappears into their character"- even the guy from Conan the Destroyer), and the plot.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy release of a CLASSIC.......2007-04-11

I'm not going to try to sell you on this movie, if you don't get why it's a classic, I can't be bothered to try to explain it to you. If you know and love this movie, this release is worth the price - it looks good, the commentary track is lots of fun.

4 out of 5 stars Irradiated.......2007-03-09

When I first saw this movie about 20 years ago I didn't know what to make of it. I was about thirty then. I still don't know, but I do know it has enough merit as a SciFi movie to deserve at least a rental. For someone to associate this as sexist, cruel, sadistic, unholy, or any other negative societal connotation is certainly understandable. It is probably those things because it was meant to be. I doubt saying Hannibal Lechter was a cannibal would surprise the author or director of "Silence of the Lambs". So trying to equate displays of anti-feminist, anti-christian, or anti-social behavior with intelligence is rather moot. The movie is what it is. You will love it or hate it probably. Imagine crossing "Reservoir Dogs" with "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" or "Raising Arizona" with "Snatch" and you begin to understand. You can't fit it in your genre specific box. So if you are open to sub-cultural wacky movies, you may be entertained.

Director Francis Ford Coppola and executive producer George Lucas shared a strong desire to film the story of Preston Tucker, the man who revolutionized car design in the late 1940s, only to have his innovation squelched by the "big three" automakers in a legal battle between Tucker and powerful political lobbies. Coppola surely related to and sympathized with Tucker as a visionary underdog, and so this stylish, energetic film envisions "the man and his dream" in idealistic terms--an unabashed optimist (played by Jeff Bridges) who realizes his vision through blind faith and tenacity. Martin Landau gives a superb, heartbreaking performance as an associate who desperately wants to share Tucker's enthusiasm, but knows that corporate wolves are knocking at the door and will soon burst in with fangs bared. Joan Allen is equally good as Tucker's supportive wife, and the film's combination of dazzling costumes, production design, and the fabulous Tucker itself (of which only 50 models were made) creates an infectious atmosphere of postwar optimism. In the end, however, this fascinating film is much like Coppola himself: possessed of genius, blinded by ambition, and prone to create works of erratic brilliance. Don't take that as criticism, however; this is a sharp, underrated film about a dreamer whose dream was a worthy one, even if it only briefly came true. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Tucker - The Man and His Dream.......2007-05-07

This film is a great and very entertaining piece of American history about a man that never really got the kind of recognition that I feel he deserved. Done up in "epic" movie making form, it is a worthy item to have in you collection if you like and enjoy cars, or the history there of or both at the same time!
Well cast and excellently acted. A most enjoyable film indeed!

3 out of 5 stars Good but Flawed Movie.......2007-04-05

Not many Americans knew much about Preston Tucker or his car before this movie came out. Since 1988 enough people became aware of both to send the value of the remaining Tucker 48's skyrocketing, assuring I'll never now own one!

This is an enjoyable movie for a car guy with numerous biographical details, good sets, costumes, and acting by Jeff Bridges that threatens to go just over the top. It's too bad that Coppola chose to beat the sterotypical "small guy with a big heart gets ground down by the big guy" horse. But good drama needs a protagonist and an antagonist, and that conspiratorical angle to be expected from Hollywood, USA. I learned a long time ago not to go to the movie theatre for a history lesson.

Fact is that Tucker tried too quickly to bring an underdeveloped product to market with an undercapitalized company. In only a few short years, much bigger companies with established product lines (Nash, Packard, Hudson, Kaiser, Studebaker, etc.) would all suffer the same fate his did.

Still, there were rumors this DVD was going out of print. Does that mean that a 20th anniversary edition is in the works?

5 out of 5 stars Tucker the Man.......2007-01-28

Tucker The Man and His Dreams is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It reflex on the times and how hard it was for a person to get a head. Tucker was a man of his time and years ahead of the times.

I Highly recommend this Movie.......

5 out of 5 stars The Dream Betrayed.......2006-12-16

The story of Preston Tucker is directed by Francis Ford Coppola, produced by Gerge Lucas and features an outstanding performance by Jeff Bridges as the inventor who dreamed too large in this wonderful American Dream.

After World War II, the automobile industry - in the guise of The Big Three - were poised to convert its manufacturing plants back to the soon-to-be burgeoning domestic market. Enter into the picture Preston Tucker, a successful inventor who had ideas to create an affordable, reliable and safe family automobile (yes, a revolutionary concept, even in the 1940s).

His "Tucker 48" auto included a rear-mounted, fuel-injected engine, disk brakes, seat belts and a padded dash, a front windshield that popped out during a severe crash, push-button controls and a third front headlight that turned while the driver was steering.

Seen as a threat to the marketing plans of the auto industry, Tucker's dream is destroyed in the hallowed halls of the federal government that winds it way through the senate chambers and stops at the desk of the president. Only 51 cars were produced.

Initially shot like the slick corporate promotional films of the 1950s to creatively present an overview of this buried history, Tucker: The Man and His Dream is a reminder how the power of influence & greed manipulates the marionette of business & government.

4 out of 5 stars Beep, beep, vroom, vrooooom..................2006-11-28

I like this flick. It's corny and historically questionable; but I like it just the same. I like Jeff Bridges. He's corny. I guess I like corny things. I like his father, Lloyd Bridges(who isn't corny in this movie) as the nasty Senator who has a big hand in destroying Tucker's dream. Joan Allen is good as is that kid who sounds like Jack Nicholson, Christian Slater. The cars are nice looking too and slick like the film. The film utilized real, honest to goodness Tucker automobiles. The flick has a zippy, jazzy score by Joe Jackson, and that song, "Hold That Tiger," which is corny but fun. Don't get me wrong; it's a well made film by Francis Ford Coppola whose best creative days, unfortunately, came way too early in his career. Hey, life can really suck sometimes, especially when the evil forces of big business and Washington, D.C. are against you and your upstart, innovative, fledgling automobile company; and you just happen to be a loud mouthed, arrogant, self-proclaimed genius whose aim is to single handedly revolutionize the automobile business. If nothing else the film tells the story of an ambitious, enthusiastic guy who bit off more than he could chew by challenging some capitalist giants who gave him a capitalist bloody nose. P.S. The best scene is that creepy one in the airplane hangar with that creepy music and that creepy portrayal of Howard Hughes by some actor whose name I can't recall. Amen.

Making this movie represented a rather risky venture for Mel Gibson--it was his first effort at directing, and the role demanded that he deliberately obscure his sexy matinee-idol looks. Gibson seems to truly relish his Lon Chaney Jr.-esque turn as Justin McLeod, a reclusive former teacher with half his face and body badly scarred, and a dark, secret past. The folks in McLeod's postcard-pretty Maine town have dubbed him "Hamburger Head" and exchange malicious gossip about him. But one boy is needy enough to dare to penetrate the fortress McLeod has built against the outside world. Fatherless Chuck Norstadt (Nick Stahl) is so anxious to escape his dysfunctional family that he pesters McLeod into becoming his mentor. Their relationship for the most part avoids the sort of sticky sentimentality one might expect from Hollywood. Chuck is a real, credible kid, a petulant pain with a chip on his shoulder, and McLeod is no Mr. Chips. It's fun, and quite moving, to watch these two cranky misfits battle their way toward a friendship that will change both their lives. Margaret Whitton (Major League) gives an unaffected performance as Chuck's narcissistic mother. "I'm just not cut out for this mothering racket," she tells her rudderless children, as she flits from man to man. Gibson's own personal code of honor, we suspect, is very much in evidence in this movie's message: One must take responsibility for what one wants in life. --Laura Mirsky

4 out of 5 stars Heart Gripping Story.......2007-05-07

Mel Gibson did an awesome job, as did Nick Stahl. The story line is heart gripping. You'll find your heart going out to both of the main characters that Mel and Nick play. I watch lots of movies, but am very selective as to which ones I'll actually purchase. This one definately made my "To Buy" List

5 out of 5 stars instructive on many levels.......2007-05-06

I think this is quite a capable movie: I have a high opinion of it.

In a spot-on performance, Gibson plays a disgraced and disfigured teacher who spends the summer mentoring a troubled boy.

What I liked most about the movie was that, unlike the typical Hollywood treacle that I expected it to be, it didn't nicely patch things up for you at the end: you really were given no easy answers. This forces you to think about what you've seen and felt, meaning the film will elicit different things from different viewers.

Yes, I couldn't believe my eyes when the filmmakers refused to wrap things up into one pat lesson.

It was like watching a French film!

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of far more attention than it gets.......2007-02-20

This is the one Mel Gibson film that hardly anyone talks about, and yet it is a magnificent work, one of the greatest-ever debuts for a director. I have seen it - I forget how many times - but it never loses its charm or its edge.
Like Isabelle Holland's book on which it was based, it is a strong, poignant and excellently written coming-of-age story about a boy with a troubled family life, and yet it transcends its source material in so many ways.
Unlike the book, it is a stunning indictment of the obsessions of our times, particularly the blindness of people who refuse to believe that adult-child relationships can be non-sexual.
Poor Mel doesn't ever seem to win: everything he does is subjected to a barrage of criticism. But I am astounded that some people actually criticize the movie for not including a sexual encounter between Mel and Nick Stahl! Can you imagine the rage if he did include such a scene?
There are so many tremendous scenes, such as the depiction of McLeod's attempt at a self-portrait, but my two favourite are the devastating final encounter between McLeod and Chuck, and the "not a trial" scene.
And the ending is so much more satisfying than Holland's having McLeod die anonymously off stage.

4 out of 5 stars An Unappreciated, moving and well acted film.......2007-01-26

The Man Without a Face I think Mel Gibson's most under-rated work as both an actor and a director. His films that he directs now are always knocked about being overly violent. I think Mel should make more films like this these days "and maybe switch to decaf and also take anger management classes with Tom Cruise". Nick Stahl (In The Bedroom, Terminator 3) gives one of his better performances here as a kid than he has now when he's older. He has no father and his mom always has a different b/f, as does his sister.

He still has no father figure though until he meets a scarred man played by Mel Gibson. They meet when Stahl is dared to go to his house. They strike up an unlikely friendship though with Mel eventually becoming his tutor. He also gives him the courage to follow his dreams. No one else sees Mel as a good influence though and even accuse him of malesting Stahl. Since Mel was accused of that in past with another kid he mentored. Despite feeling bad for Gibson's character and him being treated unfair, this is still a very moving and well made film. Plus the end is bound to make you cry but in a good way, not a bad way.

5 out of 5 stars Mel's Turning Point and Nick Stahl's Debut........2007-01-19

THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE is a quaint little drama about the deep friendship that develops between a young teenage boy and the reclusive, disfigured man who becomes his tutor. The film stars Nick Stahl (in his feature-film acting debut) as Charles "Chuck" Norstadt. Chuck lives in a broken family. His father died when he was a boy (he doesn't remember how and no one will tell him), he has two half-sisters, and they each have different fathers because his mother has been married and divorced four times. Charles likes his younger half-sister, but his older half-sister seems to have a deep hatred for him that at times he finds mutual. Living in a house full of women with no male role model is tough for a boy growing into manhood. Charles wants out and he is convinced that if he can get into the tough military academy his father went to, it will be his ticket to a better life. The only problem is that Charles isn't the brightest kid and he's already failed the test once. His mother gives him one last opportunity to take the test again at the end of summer. Charles is determined to past the test, but he knows he's going to need help.

Charles eventually makes the acquaintance of a disfigured man, Justin McLeod (Mel Gibson) who lives alone at the edge of town. Rumors abound about the man and Charles has often contributing to the mockery himself. However, upon learning that McLeod was once a teacher at a prestigious prep school, Charles convinces him to tutor him through the summer so that he can pass his entrance exam. McLeod begins the tutoring rather reluctantly, but he sees the potential in Chuck and gives him his all.

THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE was Mel Gibson's directorial debut. Gibson did a good job and the experience in the film seems to have been a turning point in Gibson's career. THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE is a smaller movie, yet it shares many of the same universal themes that Gibson explores in all of his directed feature films (so far) and many of his starring roles since 1993. The theme that stands out most in the movie is grace. Towards the end of the movie McLeod tells Charles how he taught him and showed him grace. Charles' life oozes grace and he doesn't even realize it. By the same token, McLeod displays grace towards Charles, too.

I enjoyed THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE the first time I saw it several years ago. However, now I enjoy it even more. When I first saw the film, I identified with Charles, but having returned to school and become a teacher myself, I now relate more to McLeod. In the movie, their relationship illustrates the type of relationship that should exist between every instructor and pupil, something that happens infrequently in American society.

As a side note, I have not read the book that THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE is based upon. I've been told that the book dabbles with and suggests that the relationship between the two main characters was based on sexuality. The film does not suggest that at all (though accusations of that sort are key points in the movie) and instead illustrates how a healthy friendship between adults and older children can be.

The DVD includes a trailer for the movie as well as a short featurette about the making of the film entitled REMEMBERING THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE. The featurette is brief, but it includes comments from both Mel Gibson and Nick Stahl discussing how the movie changed their lives. For a short featurette, it's actually very informative.

High-octane gas, pumped out by the buoyant maestro of Hong Kong action, Jackie Chan. In this outing, the irrepressible Chan plays a Hong Kong cop teamed up (gloriously) with a Chinese inspector played by Michelle Yeoh (a.k.a. Michelle Khan). The plot ranges all over Southeast Asia, culminating with Jackie hanging from a helicopter ladder high over the streets of Kuala Lumpur. This one's notable for the ingenuity of the stunts, and for allowing two of Asia's top female stars to do their bad thing. The great Maggie Cheung (Chinese Box) plays Chan's girlfriend, who has a tendency to pop up at the most inopportune moments; and Yeoh executes a hair-raising motorcycle jump onto a moving train--an absolute jaw-dropper. Originally released as Police Story III, the picture was rereleased in America as Supercop in 1996, after Chan's U.S. breakthrough with Rumble in the Bronx. The new version is slightly shorter than the original, and features a new soundtrack of English-language dialogue (awkwardly dubbed, but that's par for the course) and blaring rock music. Great fun any way you slice it, and--for the uninitiated--a terrific introduction to the humorous, high-kicking world of Jackie Chan. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars a must-see Jackie Chan masterpiece.......2007-05-11

Basically the 3rd movie in the Police Story series (First Strike is the 4th and last), Supercop has very little connections to the 1st 2 Poilce Story movies, which were very closely related. Jackie Chan returns as Kevin Chan, and his girlfriend Mei is still played by Maggie Cheung. I have seen Supercop numerous time, and each time its like watching it for the 1st. The story is better than many Chan films, and the action and stunts are easily amongst the best.

The story, takes itself a little more seriously than some Chan films, say compared to Mr. Nice Guy or Rumble in The Bronx. The humor is more of a minum because of that, but there's still a funny couple good moments. I think the plot is interesting and suspensful, taking advantage of Kevin Chan playing an undercover agent throughout the movie. His sidekick, or should I say boss, throughout the film is played by Michelle Yeoh, also undercover along side him, and gives an equally great performance in the film. The dubbing is far better than most films, and if you prefer Jackie Chan's own English voice, he provied his own dub in Supercop.

The action is used sparingly throughout the beginning of the film, making everything run a little slow. But the movie begins to progress more and more nicely throughout. The finale is huge. 15 minutes of straight all out action from fights to some of, if not, the best stunts ever done. Chan jums on and hangs from a helicopter ladder over the city, and Michelle Yeoh hangs off the side of a van for dear life and steers a motorcyle right up ontop a moving train. Its all real and its must see.

Fan or no fan of Jackie Chan, this is just an all out great movie. No its not recognized as a masterpiece, but in a slightly smaller world this is A++ entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Not exactly the typical JC movie.......2007-01-03

This movie is a bit different than the 'typical' Jackie Chan movie. It has IMO a more solid and more sincere story than the other movies.
Especially the first part of the movie playing in mainland China is different. In this part, Michelle Yeoh as Chinese officer is a bit overdone, however the prison break is a really remarkable piece of JC cinema. The following part of the movie features a resort type adventure with typical 'early JC' slapstick components. The last part of the movie plays in Malaysia and contains non-stop action, which some never seen before stunts including a bike ride on a train plus a helicopter landing on the same train.
All in all a very entertaining JC movie, featuring different Asian locations and a high tension, super action sequence at the end. Watching the 'making of' is also recommended because it really shows the difficulties to perform the stunt sequences for this movie. The only drawback of this movie are some overdone and a bit ridicoulos slapstick scenes. I can recommend this movie for JC fans who want to watch a slightly different JC movie than usual.

5 out of 5 stars Supercop.......2006-08-09

This arguably one of his best! Incredible! Haven't seen a Kung-fu movie this good since Legend of the Druken Master or even Twin Warriors!

4 out of 5 stars This version is a decent buy.......2006-03-07

It's just like all the jet li movies, but the dubbing isn't near as bad, not good, but certainly exceptable. I would like to see the full version, only if there are more fights, there were really not very many in this. As a whole, I would call this Jackie's best modern day film. And oh yeah, michelle yeoh is the shiznit. NICE STUNTS JACKIE, YOU HAVE TOPPED YOURSELF AGAIN.

4 out of 5 stars Super Movie! Chan & Yeoh! What's NOT to Like?.......2005-11-27

I have only seen the American version of this movie and found it very enjoyable. The situations are interestring and sometimes funny. The action is great. The motorcycly stunt with Yeoh near the end, I have read, was a first for her. They basically put her on the bike, aimed her and let it go.
It's great to see more and more people getting into these movies as the actors give thier all when doing them.

This is best Lifetime movie ever made. Satanism? Check. Child abuse? Roger that. Animal sacrifice? You bet. Overprotective, but semi-abusive parents? You know it.

I have been waiting for this movie to hit DVD for 6 years. This is perhaps the single greatest piece of television camp that has ever been produced. If you want an afternoon on pure television schlock, you MUST get this movie TODAY.

P.S. Hi christine! Don't worry, your copy is in the mail.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most important movies of our time.......2007-04-12

This is one of the most important movies of our time, and it was very difficult for me to get my hands on - in spite of the affordable price today. I had to wait a long time for it to come out on DVD.

For those who have ever heard of the McMartin pre-school case and/or the movie "Indictment" based on same, this movie is also based on McMartin but not as if it were a hoax - which it was not. The preschool has another name, but the general facts of the case are all present. This movie was put out in 1989 and pretty much disappeared after that. I caught it once on the Lifetime channel and went looking all over the Internet for it, including the Lifetime channel itself. No dice.

I'm thrilled to have it today. If this topic interests you at all, this is a movie to have in your collection.Indictment - The McMartin Trial

They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. But can a kid help an old grouch change his ways? Picking up immediately where the 1996 family favorite Shiloh left off, Shiloh 2: Shiloh Season continues the drama of a boy, his dog, and the dog's menacing original owner. Zachary Browne plays the part of Marty Preston, the young boy who rescued an abused beagle by standing up to local troublemaker Judd Travers (another convincing performance by Scott Wilson). Although Marty and Judd struck a deal, Judd seems bent on making the boy and his family pay in more ways than one for keeping Shiloh. Fueled by alcohol, Judd's suspicious character and his tendency to shoot whatever critters he pleases deeply disturb young Marty. Once again, the boy risks his own safety and exercises immense courage and compassion to turn Judd into a friend. Michael Moriarty and Rod Steiger reprise their roles as Marty's father and Doc Wallace, respectively. Because the sequel leans heavily on the original movie's plot, it loses its punch as a stand-alone show. Slightly tougher subject matter (the effects of alcoholism, in particular) warrants a slightly older audience; families with 7- to 12-year-olds should fare well. Based on the second book, Shiloh Season, in Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's popular children's trilogy. --Liane Thomas

3 out of 5 stars DEJA VU DOG STORY.......2006-10-26

It's heart is in the right place and the message that we must be kind even to those who won't reciprocate is admirable, but SHILOH 2 is merely a retread of the first movie, and nothing really new or truly exciting happens.
Zachary Browne takes over the role of Marty and he does a nice job. Michael Moriarty (who acts like he's having trouble moving) and Ann Dowd return as his parents; Scott Wilson returns as nasty Judd, who wants Shiloh back and who is as unlikeable as ever; and Rod Steiger and Bonnie Bartlett reprise their roles of the doctor and his wife.
I respect a movie that puts family values and doing the right thing, but as a movie, it's only mildly diverting for adults, but let the kids watch it and see a movie where rap music is unheard of.

4 out of 5 stars shilo 2 season.......2006-02-02

I read the book shilo because I thought it would be a good book. And I was right it was a very good book. It was a very exiting book. I especially like the part were Shilo cmes to Marti. I like this book because I like animals. It made me kind of sad when Jud tried to hurt Shilo. I look forward to reading more Shilo books.

5 out of 5 stars EVEN BETTER THEN NUMBER ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-06-13

5 out of 5 stars A Great Message Sender.......2005-05-03

I love all kinds of dogs particularly hounds and I really enjoyed watching Shiloh II Shiloh season. Not only is it a great animal movie but it teaches a great lesson how a little kindness goes a long way. Although it was good in that sense it was also a little violent which is why it's rated PG. Overall it was very pleasing to watch and to learn from.

The Car Man, the latest dance version of Carmen, comes courtesy of choreographer Matthew Bourne, who has devised his own scenario of Bizet's opera set in a garage-diner in the American midwest, circa 1960. This film treatment details all the excitement of the live performance at London's Old Vic, which capped a 2000 U.K. tour. The cinematography assists in capturing the atmosphere of Bourne's treatment--film noir with allusions to Hitchcock--through employment of chiaroscuro. The use of the split-screen technique also enhances the cinematic feel. The music sounds seductive and full-bodied, befitting the new story line (Bourne calls it an "auto-erotic thriller") in which an enigmatic stranger, Luca, walks into town seducing both Lana (Carmen) and Angelo (Don Jose). A swarthy individual, Luca looks an unlikely dancer until his first solo galvanizes the company.

The single stage set adapts into eight different permutations, taking us from diner through nightclub and prison and then out on the road in a cinematic finale where the Chevrolet cars of the period are destroyed in a pile-up. The period look is further enhanced with the girls in tight-waisted frocks and the men in Brando-esque T-shirts and jeans. The dance ensembles are an extraordinarily versatile group: classical, jazz, modern, and flamenco seem natural expressions of their body movements. Will Kemp deserves a special mention for his sensitive portrayal of Angelo. --Adrian Edwards

5 out of 5 stars Ballet from Matthew Bourne as noir...sweaty, sexy and hopeless.......2007-06-28

Okay, so this is a ballet, not a black-and-white noir with Robert Mitchum or Burt Lancaster. And the title is, in my opinion, too clever for its own good. Yes, choreographer Matthew Bourne uses great chunks of Bizet's throbbing, tempestuous music, but the story has little to do with Carmen. The Car Man is based on The Postman Always Rings Twice. It's as horny, bloody, brutal and melodramatic as the Garfield-Turner movie or the book, and with an added erotic twist. In other words, it's a great noir story which has been turned into a great noir dance production.

When the tough drifter Luca (Alan Vincent) wanders into the mid-Western town of Harmony, population 375, he winds up at Dino's Diner and Garage. Dino (Scott Ambler) is an overweight, uncouth guy with a younger sex-pot of a wife, Lana (Saranne Curtin). She and her sister, Rita (Etta Murfitt) run the diner. Dino's mechanics in his garage are all small-town bullies and blusterers. They torment a young guy, Angelo (Will Kemp), with sexual innuendo; that Angelo is the boyfriend of Lana's sister makes no difference. He's not tough enough to stand up to them, and that makes him fair game. Luca quickly establishes who is the top guy and intervenes to stop the bullying of Angelo. And when Luca and Lana spot each other, we know nothing good is going to happen. Then Dino has to be away for a night. The two would-be lovers are just about to consummate their lust when Dino unexpectedly returns. Luca barely escapes with his shoes...and uses the opportunity to finish off things with Angelo. Luca is just as happy to use male or female as long he's the one in charge. It's not long before Luca and Lana are discovered...and Dino has his head smashed in by a heavy wrench, first swung by Lana and then, with Lana urging him on, by Luca. They set things up so that Angelo takes the fall. While they spend Dino's money drinking and gambling, Angelo is assaulted in prison, but escapes with a guard's gun. He and Luca and Lana are going to meet again in front of the garage. Luca may be having a crisis of conscience, maybe even Lana, too. Is it going to do them any good?

There are two things that make this ballet work. First, course, is Matthew Bourne's originality and choreography. The dance set pieces are vigorous and to the point, and when they need to show longing or lust, they do. Bourne often drives traditional ballet mavens up the wall. He is no traditionalist and he doesn't hesitate to use whatever dance styles do the job. He also loves to give traditional stories a twist, often but not always with an erotic element that has homo-erotic themes as well as hetero-erotic. When Luca and Lana first show their explicit lust for each other in front of the garage after Dino leaves, they are joined by the mechanics and their girlfriends. These are guys where "love" means their girl friends put out and then, afterwards, "Get me a beer." Bourne and his TV director Ross MacGibbon create a dark, hot dance where the sex is almost explicit in the cutting and becomes part of the dance. Toward the end there is a long duet between Luca and the bloody corpse of Dino which Lucas' conscience brought to the surface. The two dancers, Vincent and Ambler, create a stumbling, terrible vision of retribution on its way. Later, when Luca faces off with Angelo and meets his fate, there is a bloody, explicit kiss which really is shocking. The second thing that makes The Car Man work is the dancers. The women all look sexy and petulant. Lana has a figure that would make the real Lana Turner envious. Even more necessary for this ballet to work, Luca and the mechanics are genuinely tough-looking guys. They are highly skilled dancers but no one breaks the image, by either facial expression or movement, of being small-town, ignorant bullies. Scott Ambler, with a realistically padded stomach, plays Dino with as much acting skill as dancing skill. There also is no attempt to disguise unshaved underarms or hide the sweat the dancers generate dancing. The weather in Harmony is hot and humid. The place looks like it reeks of beer, sex and sweat. So do the dancers.

While Bourne created The Car Man as a theater piece, he and MacGibbon have shot and edited it to be a cinematic experience. Traditionalists who want a camera positioned in front of the stage and then switched to automatic pilot will be displeased. Quick cutting at times, close-ups of glances, camera angles that give us far more immediacy than a theater seat would, and a tour-de-force of cutting, camera smears and sound that create the illusion of cars racing, all add up to a dynamic viewing experience. It really works in terms of dramatic tension and movement, and it obviously is exactly what Matthew Bourne wanted.

For those who might be interested in Bourne's other work on DVD, try his great take on Swan Lake and his innocently naughty version of Nutcracker. His last major theater ballet to date is based on Edward Scissorhands. It finished its American tour a couple of months ago to terrific reviews. I hope the DVD is on the way soon. The DVD of The Car Man, by the way, has a great transfer.

So can a ballet be considered a noir? When it's based on The Postman Always Rings Twice it can, especially when its as sexy, brutal and hopeless as Bourne makes it.

Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake (Matthew Bourne)

Tchaikovsky - Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker! / Matthew Bourne, Anthony Ward

5 out of 5 stars Bourne's Post-Modern Bizet.......2007-01-27

Matthew Bourne takes one of the most performed, most beloved (and cliched) operas and turns it in to a dynamic modern dance tour de force. Transforming the story from 19th century Spain to mid-20th century America brilliantly invigorates the story with new life. Adding cinematic touches of film noir and Alfred Hitchcock add suspense. Turning the traditional love triangle into a bisexual one further activates the plot. The quick cutting and constant camera movement, while supporting the suspense/film noir aspects, mar the superb dancing. When filmming dance the camera should hold on long shots that show the bodies and feet of the dancers. Perhaps more split screen or picture in picture could have been used innovatively to show both the dancers faces in close up and still maintain the view of the dance.
Perhaps this DVD is too cinematic for hardcore dance aficionadoes, but for most people who love musicals, this is another wonderful work by Matthew Bourne.

5 out of 5 stars Bourne at his best marred by distracting camera movement........2005-12-26

I agree with some of the previous reviewers: this is Matthew Bourne at his best: he's a genius of a story-teller and choreographer. His Swan Lake has become a top notch variation on a classic ballet and his recent Nutcracker is bound to become the same. For those of us who have no chance of ever seeing this production staged in a theater, this DVD is not to be missed. I find watching it arousing (in the full meaning of the word), emotionally shattering, and ultimately cleansing in the manner of a classic tragedy.

I agree with others of the previous reviewers: the nervous, MTV style camera work distracts from the dancing and the overall composition of this brilliant theater piece. In his commentary Bourne offers a sort of reasoning for the hyperactive cutting back and forth but it comes across as an after-the-fact attempt to save the integrity of his own work. There are indeed too many close-ups that prevent the viewer from seeing the dancers dance, and just as the eye settles on a movement the camera shifts. BUT I found that on second viewing I could watch sections of the DVD in slow motion without the sound track and could see and appreciate a lot more of Bourne's remarkable sense of pattern and movement and the terrific discipline and energy of the dancers.

I give this DVD five stars because this is the only version I am ever likely to see and even with its directorial flaws it conveys the high artistry and erotic energy of not only Bourne's reworking of Bizet's Carmen but also the essence of the original opera.

I think Bourne's work has staying power and that we will treasure his productions over the years, above all perhaps the magnificent Swan Lake. But where is the DVD of his Cinderella set in WWII London?

4 out of 5 stars Most interesting and engaging!.......2005-04-20

This is NOT your traditional ballet. It is, however, gripping and entrancing. The dancers are good, and the choreography imaginative. Our attention never wandered.

The plot of this "auto-erotic" dance thriller is not totally linear, but it is clearly drawn. We are interested in the characters and their interactions. We find considerable beauty as well.

My only quarrel with this presentation is the rapid cutting. I wish the camera had been able to linger longer without all the constant motion.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money-See the live show.......2004-12-05

If you want to see Matthew Bourne's choreography, your in for a major disappointment. The constant pseudo-artsy cutting, jarring close-ups, and poor shots of the dancing make this a jarring and extremely disappointing video. Be warned if you have epilepsy. The fast continuous scene switching will probably induce an episode.

Description

Isle of Man TT official Review:TT 2004 captures the racing, the records, the riders and the atmosphere generated by one of the largest TT crowds in years. The action is captured from all angles, using curb, on-bike, and roadside cameras together.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great video.......2006-03-13

You gotta love the TT! That is, if you ride or want to. This is a kind of "raw" race. On the streets, all out, trees, houses, farms all fly by at speeds only a few of us will ever attain. Lots of fun. Start the collection now because rumor has it that the "07 TT, the 100th will be the last!

4 out of 5 stars made with passion.......2005-08-26

the video is accurate and covers all the races extensively.
Very interesting are the on board cameras and the interwiews.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......2005-07-21

Bought as a Father's Day gift for my boyfriend, & I enjoyed this also. Very good!! Camera angles are wonderful, as is background information. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Isle of man review 2004.......2005-02-04

Excellent again! More of the same stuff we have come to expect from the annual review, only this time theres more. more on boards both facing forward with commentery and data(lean angle, amount of braking and accelerating) and a map so you can follow the rider around the 37 mile curcuit, and a rather odd rear facing camera angle from the dash board, so you can watch the riders body the whole way around. Also more coverage of Mad Sunday and the drag runs.
If youre at all interested in Motorcycle racing then you'll really enjoy watching these guys race around a road course doing upto 170MPH only inches away from stone walls, lamp posts and the spectactors.

4 out of 5 stars Good on-board shots.......2005-01-04

Good onboard shots and in-depth coverage of this sport that many in North America may not be familiar with. Tremendous onboard action and coverage. Very long and covers nearly all the classes. Non-motorcyclists may find it a bit tedious due to the length.

Amazon.com essential video

When Frankie Machine (Frank Sinatra) comes back to the old neighborhood after a spell in the big house, he wants to stay straight and become a drummer. But his old life--as a poker dealer and heroin addict--comes rushing back to meet him. The subject matter of Nelson Algren's novel was still shocking in 1955, and The Man with the Golden Arm was released without the seal of approval from Hollywood's Production Code. The director, Otto Preminger, used the controversy to whip up interest in the film, and his championing of non-Code pictures such as The Moon Is Blue and The Man with the Golden Arm helped end the influence of the restrictive policy. For Frank Sinatra, the role was a high point; his performance is searching, honest, and (in long scenes of going cold turkey to kick the habit) frighteningly naked. He's touchingly matched with Kim Novak, in one of her best performances; adding a bit of method-acting madness is Eleanor Parker as Frankie's hysterical wife. Sinatra was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, but lost to Ernest Borgnine--the same guy who beat him senseless in From Here to Eternity. The propulsive jazz score is by Elmer Bernstein. Even the credits sequence staked out new territory: the mod images created by Saul Bass were among his first in a long-standing collaboration with Preminger, and were highly influential on other designers. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Man With the Golden Arm.......2007-06-26

Golden-throated crooner-turned-actor Sinatra shifted into bleak, non-singing territory in Otto Preminger's visceral "The Man With the Golden Arm," a groundbreaking portrayal of drug addiction based on the novel by Nelson Algren. Though Preminger's treatment of the drug theme now feels inevitably dated, Sinatra turns in an astounding performance as jittery hard-luck case Frankie Machine, earning him his only Oscar nod for Best Actor. Elmer Bernstein's crime-jazz score adds a perfectly seedy tone. McGavin also has a field day playing Frankie's pusher.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat dreary and tedious.......2007-01-21

The beatnick style of the film and the soundtrack are OK but it's still an old movie so it moves slow and can be a bit tedious. It is a great work but still on the dull side.

5 out of 5 stars A Golden Performance!.......2007-01-09

Sinatra is at his best in Otto Preminger's "The Man With the Golden Arm." Sinatra makes you believe he is the junkie he portrays in the 1956 classic. It has been written up by movie critics ovet the decades and I have to agree with the ones that I have read; this movie is still awsome!!

3 out of 5 stars Tarnished Gold.......2006-12-31

Yes, it's impossible to look at this groundbreaking but dated (a jailhouse "I need a fix!" sequence is straight out of the Reefer Madness school of acting) at drug addiction with the same eyes as audiences of 50 years ago.

Even so, production values were amazingly sanitized, even by standards of the day. If ever a film cried out for a gritty film noir look, this was it. Instead, many of the scenes are over-lit, like a Fifties TV production; meanwhile, the studio-bound street sets are as phony-looking as the intentionally stylized exteriors in Guys and Dolls--a musical! (When a genuine exterior shot of a skyscraper is briefly seen, it's almost jarring.) And as the supposedly frumpy wheelchair-ridden wife, Eleanor Parker has to be one of the best-groomed invalids in screen history.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Movie.......2006-11-13

They just don't make em like this anymore. Sinatra is superb in his portayal, the music is great and the whole movie works surprisingly well after so many years.

Description

The Blob returns--more outrageous than ever in this 1972 sequel to the popular sci-fi classic! Plenty of familiar faces, including Larry Hagman (who also directed), Burgess Meredith, Dick Van Patten, Robert Walker and Shelly Berman, add to the fun. A geologist (Godfrey Cambridge) unwittingly brings home an unusual frozen piece of debris from the North Pole. But when it accidentally thaws, the hungrier-than-ever blood-red Blob comes to life again, consuming nearly everyone in its path and terrorizing the town. No one is safe as it crawls into a bowling alley and oozes its way across an ice rink, becoming grotesquely bloated with the blood of its victims. Can this bizarre creature ever be stopped?!

More than satisfied with the product & the delivery time.I will continue to deal with Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to get a good laugh at the Move that JR Shot..........2007-01-05

When I was a kid, I loved horror movies. I even collected those monster trading cards. There was only one movie that scared me and that was Beware! The Blob! I don't know exactly why it scared me. So I waited and waited expecting it to come on tv again after all these years. So I figured, buy it and get a kick out of it. So if you want to get a movie just to get a good enjoyable laugh check it out. Larry Hagman did a good job as director in the flick.

2 out of 5 stars Watch the 1988 remake instead...........2004-05-05

Though advertised on the back of the box art as a "sequel" to the 1958 film The Blob, this film is in no way a sequel but esentually a remake. Beware! The Blob is as much a sequel to the original Blob as the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is to the original. There is no mention of the events of the original film what-so-ever. Now that we got that out of the way lets talk about Beware! The Blob. The premise of a 70's remake of the original sounds exciting, but sadly this film does not live up to expectations. First off Beware! The Blob is terribly shot and directed., which hence gives the film a very amaturish feel. Many of the pull back camera shots are shaky and there seems to be no flair in Larry Hageman's direction. The story also has its problems. First of all is how the Blob is brought into the story. Some man in the begining that is a geologist (though this character definitly does not fit the role( supposidly finds a "sample" his crew dug up in the ground and stores it in his freezer. Naturally it thaws and the "blob" is unleashed The problem is that no hwere in teh story is there talk of it being "alien" or "human made" like in the other two fersions of the film (One in 1958 and 1988). The blob is just there! The story also has many useless moments and senarios. Take the boy scout senerio for instance. There is no point to these scenes with the boy scouts outher than to fill up time. Also many of hte characters just stupidly throw themselvesat the blob. One cop shoots, try's to flee, falls, then is eaten. One guy even has the gale to drive his car into the blob even when he ovviously sees it from a far away distance. These characters drove me nuts!! Director Larry Hagman also doesn't know whether to treat this as a straight horror film or a spoof of the genre. Htere are many scenes that are scary and suspensful (such as when the blob covers a car with occumpents trapped inside) but there are also many scenes of shear campyness that throws the movie off balence. hte music score was also quit terrible and actually ruins what are supposed to be suspensful scenes. The special effects aen't too bad, especially for the time, but many of them are quite outdated. This film is also not aided by the numerous bad titles it is under. Be
