Having made his reputation as one of the most prolific and gifted horror writers of his generation (prompting Stephen King to call him "the future of horror"), Clive Barker made a natural transition to movies with this audacious directorial debut from 1987. Not only did Barker serve up a chilling tale of devilish originality, he also introduced new icons of horror that since have become as popular among genre connoisseurs as Frankenstein's monster and the Wolfman. Foremost among these frightful visions is the sadomasochistic demon affectionately named Pinhead (so named because his pale, bald head is a geometric pincushion and a symbol of eternal pain). Pinhead is the leader of the Cenobites, agents of evil who appear only when someone successfully "solves" the exotic puzzle box called the Lamont Configuration--a mysterious device that opens the door to Hell. The puzzle's latest victim is Frank (Sean Chapman), who now lives in a gelatinous skeletal state in an upstairs room of the British home just purchased by his newlywed half-brother (Andrew Robinson, best known as the villain from Dirty Harry), who has married one of Frank's former lovers (Claire Higgins). The latter is recruited to supply the cannibalistic Frank with fresh victims, enabling him to reconstitute his own flesh--but will Frank succeed in restoring himself completely? Will Pinhead continue to demonstrate the flesh-ripping pleasures of absolute agony? Your reaction to this description should tell you if you've got the stomach for Barker's film, which has since spawned a number of interesting but inferior sequels. It's definitely not for everyone, but there's no denying that it's become a semiclassic of modern horror. --Jeff Shannon

Definitely not one for the weak of stomach, Hellbound takes up where the first Hellraiser left off, piling on the gore to near camp levels. Luckily, the 1988 sequel retains enough of British horror-meister Clive Barker's macabre wit--like the original, it's based on a Barker story--to save it from the schlock-heap. Hospitalized following her last misadventure, Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) implores authorities to destroy a bloody bed at the carnage scene, but the enigmatic Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham) brings an addled patient there and unleashes a dread Cenobite instead. As if that's not bad enough, Kirsty's getting distress calls from her father, who begs her to rescue him from hell. When she journey through hell's dark labyrinths with a mute puzzle solver, however, Kirsty only finds the evil Pinhead (Doug Bradley) and other bizarro creatures, plus her nasty former stepmother and lascivious Uncle Frank. Much maniacal laughter and skin shedding later, the newfound compadres unlock the puzzle box again to safety. Hellbound isn't genius, but it does have flair, which goes a long way toward offsetting Laurence's leaden acting and occasionally over the top gore. --Diane Garrett

"Trick us again, and your suffering will be legendary, even in hell.".......2007-02-11
Can you die again in hell? Play a game with the Cenobites and you will find out. Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) is now in an insane asylum after her involvement with the Cenobites in the first Hellraiser movie. There's evil afoot in the asylum, in the form of Doctor Philip Channard (Kenneth Cranham). Instead of throwing away the mattress Julia Cotton (Clare Higgins) died on, Dr. Channard brings it to his home along with a mental patient, for the sole purpose of spilling fresh blood onto it. The fresh blood brings Julia back from hell, and she's thirsty for more. "All we need now ... is skin."
Meanwhile, Kirsty is receiving messages from her father, written in blood on her walls, telling her he's trapped in hell. Together with an autistic puzzle-solver named Tiffany (Imogen Boorman) Kirsty uses the Lemarchand's Box to enter hell, trying to save her father. But Tiffany has been used by Dr. Channard, and the good doctor finds his own hell.
While the movie focuses on Kirsty, Tiffany, and Dr. Channard's trials and travails in hell, it in no sense of the way becomes boring. The doctor wins over Pinhead in sheer grotesquerie, traveling through hell from a large gooey worm attached to his head and snakes with different talents extending from his palms. Julia shines as the evil temptress she is, unveiled in her hellish realm. At the center of hell is a diamond shape oracle, emitting a hellish negative-light that is fantastically frightening. Kirsty reveals insight into Pinhead, and Pinhead faces off with the good doctor.
This second installment in the Hellraiser series is directed this time by Tony Randel rather than Clive Barker, and contains much more graphic (if that's possible) scenes of what it would be like in hell. The creation of hell in this movie is pure genius. If this movie doesn't scare you straight, nothing will. Enjoy!
Its sad that the hell raiser debut and hellbound were the only great hell raisers........2007-02-01
For Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence), the nightmares never end. Still fresh in her fevered memory of her father's skinned corpse, the evil machinations of her uncle Frank's reanimated body and the unspeakable perversity of the Cenobites. But the worst is yet to come. From beyond the Outer Darkness, from the darkest regions of the imagination comes Hellbound: Hellraiser II. Don't bother with the other hell raisers their just plain crap & boring.
My Own Personal Hell.......2006-11-06
This is the first time I delved into the HellRaiser series, and I have to admit, I kind of regret it. The film opens with a collage of disturbing images, I guess to get my attention, but there is no real reason for them to be there. From there the film falls into a freefall where it jumps from one messed up scene to the next. It all looks perfectly twisted, but who really cares. Clive Barker, as he did in "Night Breed," shows his taste for creative costumes and set designs. Of course they are all very self-indulgent, but beautiful nonetheless in their own little way. Had this film showed up at a modern art museum I would have labeled it pretentious. But since it showed up in movie theaters I have no choice but to label it crap.
I would love to describe the plot to you, but it didn't make a ton of sense to me. Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) is in a mental hospital and is convinced that her dad is calling out to her from inside hell, and thus she must go save him. Meanwhile her evil step-mom (and speaking from experience they are all evil) is reemerging from hell with the distinct disadvantage of not having any skin. Upon her return she uses her bloody pulp of a body to engage in a sexual act with another evil doer. I'm sure that gets laughs every time from the children who are watching, but to me it was silly and unnecessary. She goes on a quest for skin which goes off without a hitch, and from there a battle ensues between Kirsty and her step-mom over the soul of a little girl named Tiffany (or so everybody calls her). The whole point seems to be that our minds make up our own personal hells, and that is an idea I can get on board with. One overview shot of hell has it looking strikingly similar to an M.C. Escher print. With dead ends and trap doors and boogeymen we all travel through the labyrinth of our mind on a daily basis. But I cannot get on board with this film. It is sensational for the sake of sensationalism, which is fine with me, but not when it is mixed with a brain dead plot. What do I, or anybody for that matter, get from watching a man carve himself up with a knife? I guess that at least it is not soft like modern horror movies, but this one does not earn its gore.
For those of you who demand nothing out of your movies other than the experience of a bad dream where nothing makes sense then this is your film. For the rest of you this is failed storytelling of the highest degree. I still have "HellRaiser" on my shelf to watch and I must say it won't be hard for that one to top this mess. I may never understand why people think atmosphere is enough to create a scary movie. It is the major flaw of this film and Japanese Horror in general, but I want a story to go with my scares. What this one is selling is a chance to be grossed out of your mind or bored stiff. . .or both. I hated this movie, and no I don't care how realistic it looked when the characters were peeling the skin off of their faces. *1/2
He Did It Again! .......2006-08-25
Mr. Barker really knows how to make good horror movies. hellbound is no where near the level of Hellraiser but it is still a good move. There are two versions of the movie the R rated and the unrated. Make sure you get the unrated becasue the R cuts out alot from the movie. The unrated adds more violence to the movie. The plot is a little weak and the new cenobite is really annoying. This is a great sequel to a classic.
NOW, IT'S TIME TO PLAY !.......2006-08-15
THIS IS A TRUE HORROR FILM, WAY AHEAD OF ITS TIME, THE LOOK OF THE FILM, THE EFFECTS, ITS GORE, EVERYTHING ABOUT IT FRIGHTENS.

Customer Reviews:
"Time to play......."!.......2006-11-22
This movie takes place in the past, present and future and is great! Interesting story, scary scenes- I liked it better than Hellraiser III. About 10 minutes got cut out of each story-past, present and future by the editors because they felt that horror fans aren't intelligent enough to follow a good, creative storyline. This movie would have been better with the scenes left in. Rent it or buy it. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!
0 STARS: This is pure nonsense........2006-08-19
We got Jason in space and we get Pinhead in space. This is pure nonsense. Words of wisdom to the makers of these sequels: when you start putting horror movie villains in space to kill people, it's time to stop making these movies!!
More Gothic Horror and Pinhead too!.......2006-08-13
Bloodline has a gothic aura that the other hellraiser movies didn't really have. Also Pinhead shows up in this movie more often than any of the other movies. The plot is intricate and interesting and it goes into detail about the making of and the history of the puzzle box. There is gore and blood for all the horror fans and there is suspence and chills. Some parts of this movie has an Anne Rice feel to it and other parts remind me of the second hellraiser movie. If you are a hellraiser fan then you should buy it. If you like horror or suspense then you should at least rent it.
Pinhead in space........2006-06-24
What I don't understand is why horror fans have complained about this sequal when the ones that were released after this were even worse I mean this film is a masterpiece compared to those crappy straight to video sequals Inferno and Hellworld. The film is about the horrifying struggles of a family bloodline who created the puzzle box (thats how I got my nickname hehe) that opens the doors of hell and let the diabolical Pinhead free to wreak havok on earth and then in the 22nd century a scientist in a space station is trying to solve the puzzle and finaly wants to defeat Pinhead and the other cenobites and break the curse that his family has been suffering through. The film shows us the history and background behind the puzzle box that was created by the La Marchant family line beginning in France in the 18th century, the film also introduces a new villian the demonic Angelique which was very nice and interesting it also had a nice amount of gore including a very nasty looking decapatation and the twin cenobites that get there heads screwed on together which was also hilarious so overall the film was not that bad even though it did have some very cheesy and corny moments and some special fx looked bad and outdated I still enjoyed this film alot and I highly recommend this to hellraiser fans.
Bloodline.......2006-04-30
I know a lot of Hellraiser fans give this one a hard time.I actually liked it a lot.It told the entire story of the puzzlebox, not quite a violent as the last one,but still gory, and pinhead had plenty of good lines.Definetly one of my favs.Check out the first four in the series,DONT even waste your time with the last four, they are an insult to the series

A very credible entry in the Hellraiser series, Hellraiser: Hellseeker presents a nifty puzzle for gore fans, plus plenty of philosophical musings from the ineffable Pinhead ("Personally, I prefer pain"). A smoldering Dean Winters plays a man who survives a car accident in which his wife was apparently killed; because of a head injury, his memory is mixed up, and he can't distinguish between reality and fantasy. The borrowings from Memento are obvious, and the fragmented story pieces may not all fit together, but the mystery does become tantalizing. Within the low-budget constraints, veteran cinematographer Rick Bota (making his directing debut) keeps the atmosphere clipped and gloomy. The film also brings back Ashley Laurence, who appeared in the original installments of Clive Barker's franchise. One question: with Pinhead in the house, is visiting an acupuncturist really a good idea? --Robert Horton

Clive Barker's Gothic ghoul Pinhead is pitted against online gamers out for kicks in Hellraiser: Hellworld, the eighth entry in the popular horror franchise. A group of young computer-game enthusiasts crack the secret of Hellworld, a virtual-reality game based on the Hellraiser mythos, and earn themselves an invite to an exclusive party at a secluded and spooky mansion. There, the host (Lance Henriksen, always a welcome sight) reveals his elaborate collection of Hellraiser-related artifacts, as well as a hidden agenda regarding one of the gamers' friends, who died under sinister circumstances. Naturally, this fresh assortment of attractive young souls with an insatiable curiosity for the forbidden summons up Pinhead (Doug Bradley, natch) and his Cenobite friends to unleash their own brand of hell on Earth. Hellraiser devotees won't find any fresh ideas in the script, but veteran cinematographer Rick Bota (who helmed the two previous films in the franchise) provides attractive visuals, and the gore is plentiful and unpleasant. --Paul Gaita

This is the first Hellraiser sequel that doesn't bear the imprimatur of creator Clive Barker, and that makes it a sequel that many Hellraiser fans will want to disown, but they shouldn't dismiss it altogether. Now under the control of Miramax producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, the franchise takes an entirely new direction, and Inferno is primarily a detective thriller in which a corrupt cop (Craig Sheffer) takes on a case that will judge his soul and, ultimately, damn him forever. His judge and jury will be Pinhead (Doug Bradley) and his legion of twisted Cenobites, but before he can be tried and condemned, Sheffer's cop will watch as those around him are killed off one by one, leaving a trail of blood (and telltale severed fingers) that leads back to the torment of his own youth.
So, what you really have here is a variation on It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol, with all the themes reversed to hellish extremes. The plot doesn't hold together all that well, but you can't fault the film for establishing and maintaining a heavily somber tone. This is pretty dark stuff, after all, and although Hellraiser fans will lament that Pinhead's appearance is relatively brief, he's presented here in an intriguing new light--not merely an icon of pain and suffering, but a giver of counsel and justice to those (like Sheffer's cop) who arguably deserve the eternal anguish they will receive. Does that make Pinhead a good guy? If this otherwise lugubrious sequel achieves anything, it's that it raises that question and lets the viewer decide. --Jeff Shannon

Hellraiser
Hellbound: Hellraiser II
Definitely not one for the weak of stomach, Hellbound: Hellraiser II takes up where the first Hellraiser left off, piling on the gore to near camp levels. When she journeys through Hell's dark labyrinths with a mute puzzle solver, however, Kirsty only finds the evil Pinhead (Doug Bradley) and other bizarro creatures, plus her nasty former stepmother and lascivious Uncle Frank. Much maniacal laughter and skin shedding later, the newfound compadres unlock the puzzle box again to safety. Hellbound isn't genius, but it does have flair, which goes a long way toward offsetting Laurence's leaden acting and occasionally over the top gore. --Diane Garrett
Customer Reviews:
These are true horror classics........2006-06-29
These two films are arguebaly the best in the series and considered to be classic 80's horror films. Clive Barker has created a world of horror that was very creative it has a very dark and creepy atmosphere and unlike the later sequals in the series it has a ton of gore and violence (make sure that you get the unrated editions). Hellraiser part 1 and 2 should be watched back to back but only if you have a strong stomach as both films continue the narrative storyline and are both very enjoyable to watch and are both horror/gore masterpieces.
The first film introduces us to Pinhead and the other demons from hell called cenobites that are summoned by the lament configuration box, the story is about a man brought partially back to life by the blood of his brother. He befriends his sister in-law who agrees to supply the blood he requires to live, the sister in-law helps Frank by seducing some strangers into the house and then killing them but he is still haunted by the evil forces which held him captive in death, for Kristy Cotten its like a living nightmare when she finds out the truth and now she must stop her uncle Frank before its too late. The films subtext is about how far a person can go when they're looking for the ultimate pain and pleasure, it seems like the true villians are Frank and his sister in-law. You might recognise actor Andrew Robinson as Kristy's father he was the psychotic killer in Dirty Harry and in this film he gives yet another great performance.
The second film Hellraiser: Hellbound continues the story when Kristy is kept at a hospital after the traumatic incident at the end of the first film with her father's skinned corpse and the demonic cenobites still fresh in her memory. Doctor Channard re-opens the channel between the dimensions and once again Kristy is propelled into their horrifying world. The second film does a brilliant job of following up some plot threads that were left during the first film and its obvious that the budget looks slightly bigger, the mental hospital or asylum setting was great it later turns into a maze from hell where each character gets tormented by reliving a dark secret or past that they regret doing. Theres even more gore than the first film and so its not recommended for those who have a weak stomach, in one particular scene where a mental patient takes a razor blade and starts cutting and mutilating himself while screaming "GET THEM OF ME!!!" will make you turn away in disgust cause it is very gory you have been warned. The series after these two films deffinetely headed towards a different direction with Hellraiser 3:Hell on earth Pinhead became more of a main character who said these cheesy one liners and started to look like a Freddy Krueger villian, I still liked it but it wasn't the same anymore and after that the series was no longer scary or gory with dissapointed horror fans and Clive Barker who I read in an interview somewhere he said that he hated the series especially what they did with Inferno and wanted to disown them. Overall I highly recommend these films to horror fans and its a great way to introduce someone who hasn't seen any gory horror films before, these films will get them started.
Do not let the flesh murder the spirit........2006-06-04
_For years I was at a loss to explain why I watched the entire Hellraiser series. As a general rule, I avoid horror movies and slasher flicks. Yet, I made it a point to watch this entire series- more than once.
_Then it hit me. All of these movies have a "message." Under all the gore is one central message: "Do not let your flesh murder your spirit." Think about it, every character that is butchered and torn to bits has pretty well deserved it- it was their weakness and ambition that led them to it. Otherwise the Box would have held no fascination for them.... A spiritually centered being , such as a saint or a shaman, can laugh as he is being flayed by demons (or Cenobites.)
_"Pinhead" ,you see, is a spiritual teacher- if you give too much importance to worldly matters and the flesh, then you deserve what you get....
It all began very nice.........2006-03-26
Nowadays Hellraiser 1 is still very impressive. You will find a good story combined with a very creepy atmosphere and the fine cast really adds some extra value to the movie as well. This is a horror movie Hollywood can use as a blue print of how scary movies should be. Unlike part two, Hellbound, however....that one was a great anticlimax for me. Some of the originally very inventive plot is starting to get annoying then..with the final battle between the Doctor and the Cenobites being ridiculous. In Hellraiser 3, 4, 5....and I don't even know which part we're at now.....Pinhead is looking more and more like Freddy Krueger. (SARR)
Classic Hellraiser - At its best!! before the letdowns.......2006-03-22
I would review these individually, but luckily they fall into the same level of enjoyment. Clearly the best 2 Hellraiser movies ever made. These have everything a horror fan could want. Great enigmatic characters, interesting historical content, a plan and a purpose. What is unique is that we don't get the whole story.... There is so much left to wanting to see into further. It opens itself up to very imaginative alternatives and background follow-up. Sadly though the sequels to follow give us some information but end up mostly disappointing with weird surreal outcomes. Hellbound is where a true followup should start. Take us into this psuedo Dante experience and deliver the horrific nature of Pinhead's domain..... this is what true HR fans want to see! Why does the HR series have to become another teen thriller as in later versions, or Pinhead a metaphor for wrong doings?..... get back to the dark nature of the Cenobites and Let's see what sites he has to show us!!!
(Eyesofchaos dot com)
It's different kinds of horror movies.......2003-09-27
In 1987 and '88, "Hellraiser" 1 and 2 were released, and these are certainly the best of the series. You can watch the two back to back and it seemlessly flows as one story. The over all story line is one family's fight against the Centobites, S and M demons from hell (it's not as corny as it sounds, trust me), and their nominal leader being Pinhead. There are a lot of issues floating around these movies; betrayal, lies, secrets, murder, audultry, the cheif among them the pleasure of pain (YIKES!). These movies have a lot of torture scenes, hooked chains clawing away flesh (those still make my skin crawl just thinking about them), the blood flows like a river, skinned corpes are walking around, and sex is taken to a whole new low. Clive Barker has some kind of warped mind, God bless him. Hell itelf is a vast maze where you must re-live your past misdeeds over and over, an interesting concept. The emotional center of the movie is Ashley, and her nemisis step-mother, Julia. The two are so different, yet they end up doing the exact same thing, the both end up betraying someone to achieve their own means. These films are very, very gory (I recomend finding the unrated versions), and so those with weak stomachs may want to find something else. But there is also a very interesting moral; curiosity kills the cat, if the cat is lucky.
