Michael Caine gives a great performance in this movie as he was passed over for a promotion. He plays by the rules only to get trampled by those less deserving of said promotion. Then he takes matters into his own hands and makes power moves that gets him his much deserved promotion by any means necessary .

Here's where Michael Caine shines, as a corporate exec who gets passed over for the promotion he's so feverishly expecting he'll get in favor of a young Turk--well played by Peter Reigert--who lords it over Caine's character in subtle (and not so subtle) ways. Caine's wife, also well played by Swoosie Kurtz, one of the great unknown American stage and film actresses, is a serious [problem] to him. So he has two people in his life who are supremely annoying.

What does he do? Well, let's just say that his solution to these two problems ends in the population of the world changing, shall we?

The dialogue in this very smart blackly comic thriller is sharp as a razor; it's a lot of fun to watch Mr. Caine give us his best as a put upon exec who's more than capable of flying into a rage at the drop of a hat and of executing his very sneaky and well thought out plans for revenge. Also on hand is Elizabeth Perkins, an equally intelligent office colleague who attracts Caine in more ways than one, but does not suspect him of any wrongdoing at all. That is, until...

One of the best office comedies around, A Shock to the System is a stinging portrait of greed and selfishness in America--for my money, far better than the somewhat overblown Wall Street. This is a movie that gives you a great evening's entertainment and part of the reason for that may be to secretly exact vengeance upon those corporate bigwigs who've prevented you from getting a job for so long, given this miserable economy.

Great job. Highly recommended.

Play Naughty; Win Big.......2003-06-16

Michael Caine is marvelous when playing a happy villain. He was impossibly beautiful as a young man, but middle aged Michael with serious bags under his eyes and a slight weight problem has an air of wounded vanity, as if he can't quite understand how things went wrong.

Caine, as Graham Marshall, is a fairly successful marketing director with an expensive home, an expensive and slightly boring wife, and is desperately anticipating a promotion for his many years of diligence. He is stunned when he is passed over for a young, brash associate. Graham has an epiphany when a particularly smarmy panhandler enrages him, and Graham impulsively shoves him off the subway platform in the path of an oncoming train. No one has seen him and Graham muses on his "magical" powers. He quickly and cleverly dispatches the wife and the business rival, gets rid of his white elephant of a house in the suburbs, boards the pets and gets a tasteful apartment in Manhattan. Though homicide Lt. Laker (Will Patton with a splendid Long Island accent) is suspicious, nothing can be proved. Graham not only gets the promotion, he has his eye on taking over the company, dispatching his rivals on his upward climb.

What keeps the tension intact is the victims are not cartoon-like villains. The wife is irritating, but not evil. The youngster who beat him out for the promotion is vulgar, but it is clear he is clever and competent. We just cannot help but cheer Graham on his nefarious way. Michael Caine's glee and satisfaction are catching.

There is more than a whiff of Alec Guinness's "Kind Hearts and Coronets" in Caine's performance, but Michael Caine has a knack for villainy all his own. "Shock to the System" may be a trifle of a movie, but it is a highly enjoyable trifle. ....

You're here so you're probably a Michael Caine fan. So, the crux of the issue is; Is this a performance you need to see? The answer is yes. If you're a fan of Michael Caine's you HAVE to buy this film. He is absolutely brilliant in it. No other actor could have pulled this off. The wicked, sly, dark humor, the subtlety, killing people and making you believe it, laugh
about it, and actually root for him. Caine nails it. If you're a Caine fan, you're not looking for some big obvious slap-stick comedy, you're looking for something a little more off-beat and

I don't know, I don't think it merits more than three stars, in spite of one terrific cast. The plot is not that original and the ending is terribly unsatisfying, even if it is perhaps more true to life. Ed Harris looks great here, but the one to watch is his partner, Benicio Del Toro, who was Rosie Perez' husband in "Fearless". This was filmed before "Blink" which also starred Stowe. Was set in Florida and the house they used - the outside - was georgeous, with one of those wrap-around porches. I kept wondering throughout why they made such a point of showing Stowe's wedding ring flashing. It was distracting since nothing came of it. And no mention of how Stowe connected to Del Toro at all. They don't seem to move in the same circles. Also doesn't make sense that her husband wouldn't give her anything in a divorce, because she had some very incriminating pictures taken of him in bed with the blond hired by Del Toro, who worked at Dance's bank. And how did they connect up? She stood to get more by going for being Dance's next wife. Lots of questions; no answers.

This devasting Emerson's statement works out in this modern film noir with stunning accuracy.
Ed Harris falls in love with a femme fatale (the seductive Madeleine Stowe) . She is a married woman and obviosuly all the consequences derivated from this affair will be a real elevator to the gallow.
The surrounding atmosphere is dark and the dramatic nucleus of the picture with the rain as a background seems anticipate the demons that will get out from the Pandora box.
Ed Harris is superb like the policeman who slow but progressively watchs how his efforts for avoid to be discovered as the cover woman become ashes.
The somber role of this double face cop played by Benicio del Toro was a hit for him.
Madeleine Stowe is perfect. She is still one of the most beatiful actress in the cinema , but her shame gaze shines with amazing realism. She reminds me too much to a spanish actress called Ana Torrent (Thesis) .
It's hard to forget the long tradition of the film noir in the american cinema . The two most remarkable triumphs given in the
eighties were Body Heat and The Black Widow.
However, the director John Bailey assumed the challenge and won the match with this film.
Excelent atmosphere though I feel too much enlightment in certain sequences. If not for that detail, I would give this film five stars.

they dont make movies like this anymore.Lamar Dickey is just another wide eyed wet behind the ears rookie cop or so it would seem to his partner.this movie takes a very Hitchcock like turn and suddenly the detective investigating the bank owners murder is now the prime suspect!

Very good movie . I have to worn you - if you expecting regular , happy ending Hollywood cheapy , you are in wrong place .
Ed Harris playing a police homoside detective . His character is street smart , talanted , but very lonly . His partner is young and kind of laisy .One evening , Harris meet a beatifull woman ( Madelein Stowe ), and we fell in love with her character right away : smart , very attractive , intellegent and funny . So did the detective . She dissapears that evening , but Harris find her , of cause . The relationship developes and getting more and more interesting every scene . But everything goes not that easy for tham - she is married . Producers made an exellent selection of an actor for the role of her husband ( we dislike him right away ). He ownes a big Florida bank chain , cheating on his beatifull wife and pushing her around constantly . We know right away - something will happen , somebody going to get killed . And most likely , this someone will be her husband .
What I like in this movie , is the love story between Harris and Stowe . Both actors perform on such high level , that keeps your attention from begining all the way to the end . We want them to be together . And when Stowe get in big troubles , we want Harris to help her .
At same time we have to think ,That she is just seting him up , but we want to belive her . We WANT to belive that she loves Harris character . And at the last moments of the movie , insted of being sad about the ending , we feal relief - this was a true love .
Highly recomended.

Before Penelope Spheeris's directed "Wayne's World," she made another film about a pair of young men. "The Boys Next Door," though, contains little of the offbeat humor that marked the Dana Carvey/Mike Meyers collaboration. You won't find subtle and not so subtle pop culture references punctuated with over the top antics in "The Boys Next Door." Nor will you hear a single reference to "party on." In a way, "The Boys Next Door" resembles Spheeris's other films, namely "The Decline of Western Civilization," in that it looks closely at the sort of young people we don't normally see on television or in the print media. In the case of "Decline," Spheeris examined the effects of punk rock music on select members of America's youth. In "Boys Next Door," it's how the loss of hope leads a select few youngsters to a life of murder and mayhem. The movie, interestingly enough, begins with an error. Pictures of notorious criminals David Berkowitz, Ken Bianchi, and Ed Kemper float by in order to set a context for what we are about to see. Regrettably for the film, Berkowitz, Kemper, and Bianchi were serial killers. The two boys we meet in the movie, Roy and Bo, are spree killers. There is a big difference between the two as anyone interested in true crime stories knows.

Roy Alston (Maxwell Caulfield) and Bo Richards (Charlie Sheen) are just two of your average, everyday kids getting ready to graduate from high school. They are also the loner type, two kids who paired up with each other after the other kids excluded them from the various social circles. Both Roy and Bo are instantly recognizable high school types, at least for those of us perceptive enough to notice those around us during those painful years of compulsory schooling. They are a little rough around the edges, thanks to their miserable home lives and their relative poverty, but occasionally they make tentative overtures to others that are cruelly rebuffed. One can only feel sorry for Bo when he admires one of the prettiest girls in his class from afar, hoping against hope that he can somehow approach her and strike up a meaningful connection. Roy, the more cynical of the two, has long since reconciled himself to being an outcast, and he spends most of his time quashing any kernels of kindness popping up in Bo's mind. There's something more about Roy, something that goes beyond cynicism into the realms of downright cruelty and hatred. We first see it when he talks to a Marine recruiter on campus about joining the Corps so he can kill people. Not good. Later, of course, Roy will give full vent to his murderous rages.

After crashing a graduation party and finding themselves tossed out on the street, the two decide to cruise down to Los Angeles for a day or two for some old fashioned hijinks. Besides, getting away for a few days sounds like a good idea when the only thing they have to come back to is a couple of cruddy jobs at a local factory, jobs that will probably last a lifetime. The two barely enter the Los Angeles area when all heck breaks loose at a gas station. Roy, thinking the attendant ripped him off over two bucks in gas, beats the man to a bloody pulp. Later, at the beach, one of the boys throws a beer bottle that strikes an elderly woman on the head. Two young ladies attempt to confront the pair about the bottle, and one of them ends up taking a ride around the parking lot on the hood of Roy's car. More atrocities follow, all escalating with ferocious brutality. A gay man dies at their hands, as does an attractive young couple whose only crime involved first making eye contact with Bo and later spurning him in a video arcade. By the time Roy murders Angie (Patti D'Arbanville) while she's in the process of wooing Bo, the game is about over. Two cops, Detective Mark Woods (Christopher McDonald) and Detective Ed Hanley (Hank Garrett), have been tracking these two since the gas station heist, and a lucky break puts the boys right in their hands. Or does it?

I remember seeing "The Boys Next Door" back in the mid 1980s on cable. I was impressed with it then and consider it a good movie now. Aside from the misidentification of the two as serial killers, the movie still contains plenty of good performances, good dialogue, and shocking scenes. Sheen and Caulfield both carry off their respective roles convincingly, but Caulfield does the best job in the frightening role of Roy Alston. His speech about how he feels inside sends chills down the spine, as does his transformation from composed youth to shrieking beast. Oddly enough in a film larded with killings, I consider the bottle scene one of the most disturbing in the film. The look on that old lady's face when the bottle conks her on the head is so upsetting that it's not easy to forget, especially when the camera cuts back to Bo and Roy in order to show them laughing about what they did. There's just something about this scene that successfully telegraphs, just as much as the murders, the coldness of these two kids. "The Boys Next Door" does contain at least one unintentionally hilarious scene in the form of Detective Ed Hanley's haircut. Geez, I thought he was wearing a tricorn hat or something!

Extras on the DVD include a commentary with Spheeris and Caulfield, a trailer, and cast biographies. The picture quality looks great for a twenty year old film. I would recommend this movie to most fans of low budget cinema, but it's also got an appeal to Charlie Sheen completists (Is there such a thing? God help us!) and lovers of movies dealing with the criminal mindset.

Great 80s suspense film!.......2004-04-11

This is one of those movies that for some reason is often overlooked by many viewers. True, it is a low-budget film starring two actors( Charlie Sheen, and Maxwell Caulfield) who haven't done anything remarkable in a about a decade, but it kept me on the edge of my seat all the way to the thrilling conclusion. Its cool to see the intense and belligerent performance by given by Maxwell Caulfield. I read a review on Amazon where someone compared this film to the movie Falling Down, I couldn;t agree more. The whole movie moves through a of a series of scenes consisting of everyday situations and shows how a psychotic and over the edge teen reacts to them, its not good. Charlie Sheen plays his timid sidekick more deteremined to winning his psychotic friend's affection rather than speaking up for himself and saying what they are doing is wrong. All and all a great movie and highley entertaining.

TWO TEENAGERS [CHARLIE SHEEN AND MAXWELL CAULFIELD] DECIDE TO GO TO LA. ONCE THEY GET THERE, THEY COMMIT A SERIES OF RANDOM KILLINGS. THIS MOVIE IS REALLY UNDERRATED BY THE CRITICS. THIS IS A HIGHLY ENTERTAINING MOVIE. THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS MOVIE IS THAT IT KEEPS YOU WATCHING. THIS IS ONE OF THE BETTER CHARLIE SHEEN MOVIES. BUY THIS AS SOON AS YOU CAN! IT'S REALLY WORTH THE MONEY!

Little Mistake.......2003-11-23

My dad was an extra in this movie. He was one of the mall security guards. If you look close, you can see him looking at a map on the wall, then walking around the mall at the same time. I know its nothing, just one of those things we noticed when first watching it.

Great guilty pleasure movie.......2006-10-01

I'm not big into guilty pleasure movies. In fact of the 300 or so movies I own I think I have 3. Make it 4 now. After the first 20 minutes I was ready to turn the movie off. But I decided to watch on. And boy am I glad I did. It grew on me. It's so unique. It never takes itself too seriously while at the same time not taking itself lightly either. Great mix of horror/humor, and a fun movie I can see myself watching over and over. It ranks right up in my guilty pleasure department with Killer Klowns from Outer Space. All the characters are enjoyable and they all fit very well into the plot. It's just a fun watch. You get creepy, funny, serious, complex, simple all rolled into one. One of the few B movies that is enjoyable and gets better with each view. How can you fit 3 killer dolls, a shrunken head billionaire, a butler who wears clown make-up 24/7, a midget guard, a girl rock band electrocuted into playing songs of choice, a dominatrix female with superior intelligence and Type-A ambition, and a guy getting drilled in the heart with a drill bit all in one movie? Answer: Blood Dolls. Sometimes the stars just align perfectly. Thanks for the ride.

Outrageous; Beyond the common Limits of Human Intelligence.......2006-02-02

"Blood Dolls" is a confounding freakfest about which little of worth can be said... It begins with a quite literal indictment of corporate ethics as a pair of unscrupulous complicitors in an unethical business enterprise enter the world of a business "genius" who wears a long-discarded X-Files prop (literally copied from the episode "Grotesque") as a mask, has a morose clown for a butler, and keeps a dwarf around for no apparent reason other than to keep the general sideshow aura amped to an extreme level. This dwarf routinely tortures his encaged, all-female rock band, who, beside being surprisingly technically adept, do little more than provide nudity. Shortly into the proceedings, the cornball bloodletting starts, the billionaire reveals the disproportionately small head beneath the mask, and one of the complicitous nobodies is transformed into a "blood doll." These must be parodies of "Puppet Master," but since that film might as well have been a parody itself, that isn't saying much. The film exudes an air of sadism amid the camp, and occassionally meanders into utterly senseless philosophical musings culled pretty much directly from the sources they cite. The acting is awful; the characters and story, absurd. However, it's also pretty damn funny, in an Ed Wood-let's take this seriously even as it becomes increasingly absurd to-kind of way. Worth a rent for a camp conoisseur, but little else.

a great horror/humor combo.......2004-08-01

This one went surprisingly deep on the philosophical banter between the protagonist and antagonist. But it was no mere head-to-head talkie. The music was astonishingly good, the suspenseful action lent a continuing air of suspension and tension that gave you the creeps, and the script was a twist if Nietzsche meets the Twilight Zone. The babes were hot and sassy and the relationships complicated like the taste a well aged wine. If you don't like this movie, you probably don't like to have fun with horror and should seek your thrills in more somber chillers. The clown! William Burns brought levels of sophistication to his role. His character was a spiritual man, you see. The story's message might offend the devoutly religious. Too bad. Hidden talent showed up in this yarn. The girl band coulda been a contender. The lead actress in the movie leaves you begging for more. Literally.

Where do i find the music?.......2003-04-21

The movie was "interesting" it takes some getting used to, u just have to laugh with it. I've been trying forever to track down the band that does the song "pain" but I can't figure out who sings it. the music video says "blood dolls" but nothing shows up on them as being a real band...

I'm almost ashamed.......2003-04-10

I'm almost ashamed to admit this but I loved this movie. The first time I saw it I thought it was a parody but by the third or fourth time it simply grew on me. Virgil is a billionaire with an anatomical problem and a totally out of control sense of humor. His henchman Mr. Mascaro is a clown who has no intention of making you laugh. Virgil has a live band held captive in the living room and has living dolls who kill people. Sounds ridiculous right? Well it is but Blood Dolls never pretends to be anything more than the B flick it is.

Yeap,found another of the movies I loved as a kid. Well in truth I've had this one for years(and many times over, I have it in at least four different mega movie packs),bit this is the best copy I have of this corny but effective "Werewolf" chiller from the 70's.
David Janssen(the Original "Fugitive" and a long time favorite of mine) leads the cast as a southern sheriff looking into a rash of killings in his town. There is a level of carnage about the killings that points more toward an animal than a man.
Nothing great here to be sure,but it does have a very sinister feel about the investigation as the leads start pointing to something supernatural, and the attacks step up.
As for the cheese factor, sure it's a 70's T.V. movie, it's going to look fake. If you don't want to pay this much buy one of those mega movie packs and get 49 other movies for about $20.00.

Bradford Dillman As The Amish-Cajun Loup-Garou!.......2006-01-30

If my title makes no sense to you, then you are mentally prepared to see this movie. (If it does, I suggest professional help at once.) This 1972 made for TV stinker stars the normally respectable David Janssen as a sheriff in a backwater Louisiana town trying to track a savage killer.

The story starts with the murder of a girl, and false leads abound: she was pregnant by one guy, smuggling drugs for another, romantically involved with a third, etc. Despite the small town soap opera, David Janssen makes an arrest, but finds he has the wrong guy when the arrestee and a deputy are savagely killed. Throughout this mess there is the old, dying psychic man babbling in French (remember, this is Cajun country) about the "loup-garou." At first I had absolutely no clue what he was going on about, as "loup-garou" is not in my French vocabulary. A quick consultation with my French dictionary shed some light on the situation: "loup-garou" means "werewolf" in French.

When all is said and done it turns out that the werewolf is none other than Bradford Dillman, the smarmy aristocratic Cajun Mogul-in-Chief. The movie doesn't show the werewolf until close to the end, but believe me bad movie fans, it is worth the wait. The makeup makes Dillman look like a very Amish werewolf in the facial hair department. He is also a spectacularly scrawny, agile, and whiny werewolf. I am especially fond of the "werewolf in the flaming barn" shots which are perhaps the least realistic depiction of fire that I have ever seen in a movie. I will not give away the stirring conclusion to the film, but suffice it to say that you won't be even a bit surprised.

This one gets two stars for campy entertainment value. David Janssen is not bad as the sheriff; the rest of the cast is less good, while the townsfolk are downright creepy. A wardrobe warning: be prepared for Janssen's habit of unbuttoning his shirt way too low; his chest hair looks more like a weasel pelt attached to his anterior by Velcro. What I am saying here is that it is really not a good look for him. Recommended for fans of bad movies, werewolf completists, or David Janssen fans.

forgotten little gem.......2005-09-13

moon of the wolf came at a time when t.v. horror films were common and generally good.Because t.v.limited the amount of explicit gore,they had to develop character and atmosphere.
Moon of the wolf delivers on both counts and therefore becomes a tight,scary chiller.The climax being genuinely frightening.
The film also benefits from being filmed on location in louisiana and soaks up the creole/cajun feel with a good dose of southern decay.
the acting is first rate and the direction stays on target.

If your looking for a good horror film,look no further.

I really liked this movie due to the fact it was filmed largely in my home town of Bayou Sorrell LA. In the year it was produced (1972) this was really a thriller! Special FX were not all electrical and mechanized. The opening scene is actually my Wife's grandparents home which mysteriously burned in 1986. As children in the early 70's all my friends and relatives loved this film and still feel it is one of that era's neatest films. Enjoy the suspense and thrill of a not-so-scary Cajun werewolf mystery!!!

Way Underated.......2006-05-27

Shredder is one of the most underated modern day B movies I have seen. The reviews that bash this movie or incorrect and untruthful. Shredder is a blast to whatch from the begginning to the end. The movie is about a group of college students that travel to an abandoned ski lodge for their break. Little did they know a killer is up there waiting to murder anyone that disobeyes the rules of the resort. Shredder is filled with many murders but what really pleased me was the variation. I don't want to see a killer only stabbing people with a single weapon, the killings need to vary and be different, thats what will keep a viewer watching. The movie also has a nude scene of a very attractive girl, but not the most attractive. Theres actually a scene in a hotub with a gorgeous girl that has zero nudity. That scene was dissapointing. Overall Shredder was a fun movie filled with killing, nudity and all the good stuff that you'd expect in a B-movie and its only $1.00, you cannot go wrong with this one.

Murder On The Slopes...........2006-02-25

Being a horror movie and slasher film fan, I enjoyed this movie. With the Death To Snowboarders theme, you expect a slasher movie and that's what we get in Shredder. The film features a group of coeds who retreat to an abandoned ski lodge. When told to leave by the local authorities, the coeds do not head the warning and decide to stay. Bad mistake! Thinking they will have a wonderful time partying, they are soon to find out that someone wants them off the slopes! They have no idea that they are not alone until the body count rises and we see a killer dressed in black who has an axe to grind! This is a good slasher flick with good gore effects. It keeps you guessing as to who the real killer is. Definetly worth renting!!!

flawless teen slasher flick,yep folks!a great movie,i rented this flick several weeks ago.don't worry it was'nt during christmas,so i picked it up when me and my dad went into movie gallery.i was looking through a few slasher flix,and i found this one,the reason i got this one is because i saw it on the internet and it looked awsome!the movie is about a few teens,they just inherited an abandoned ski lodge.a few snowboaders,only one skier.after hearing about a past acctident they are killed off 1 by 1.decent gore as well special effects,and a poor amount of special features.overall a good flick

My three star review was influenced greatly by the attractive Lindsey McKeon and the ultra-hot Holly Towne, who was kind enough to bless the world with a nude scene. Without them: two stars. Slasher-wise SHREDDER is about as tired, unoriginal and cliched as humanly possible, but still light years better than AX 'EM.

Some annoying teens go to an aboandoned ski lodge to shred some "virgin powder" and end up getting picked off by some mysterious skier who hates snowboarders. Absolutely no suspense and little blood.

Despite the cold weather Lindsey McKeon manages to stay in her underwear for the majority of the movie. Thank you. Also Scott Weinger, who plays the lead, is the voice of Aladdin in all of the Disney movies and video games.

A Lot Better Than The First 5 Minutes Might Have You Thinking.......2005-06-26

Not terribly original, quite predictable much of the time, and with various other little shortcomings popping up here and there, "Shredder" probably shouldn't be half as enjoyable as it is, but somehow it manages to be one of the better non-series 'slasher' type horror movies out there. Admittedly, it doesn't approach the level of the best chapters in the big ongoing series ("Friday The 13th", "Nightmare On Elm Street", "Halloween", etc.) but on the other hand it's actually Better than a number of the weaker entries in the big series. Quite a bit better, in fact.

Centering on a group of teens/early twenties characters heading up to an abandoned ski/snowboard camp for a weekend of fun who instead end up being preyed upon by a masked assailant, it misses a couple of opportunities for some more innovative (and potentially awesome) pursuit-type scenes but makes up for it elsewhere. Does manage some actual suspense more than once, and certainly manages to set itself up as a tremendously sexy movie more than once. The characters are, for the most part, kind of blooming idiots, but they're Likable blooming idiots, the kind of characters comedies featuring casts this age try for but (in my opinion) usually fall short of. Some good performances in here too.

It's kind of a hard movie to rate. If going on a ten-point scale, I could take the cynical approach and count up all the flaws and unevenness of the movie and argue it down to a six or so in spite of how well it turned it out, but who wants to be cynical all the time? Part of me keeps thinking of the best parts and arguing for a nine or at least 8.5 On a five-star scale, I think a four is appropriate. I don't know why, but a lot of what would sound like 'filler' scenes on paper just clicked and came off really good, and help the show to be worthy of a good high rating.

A couple of random thoughts: I don't always watch the 'deleted' scenes on a disc (especially on a movie that's pretty much perfect the way it is, out of fear of diluting it) but there was a bit of leeway on "Shredder" so I checked them out and they actually added to the movie - entertaining 'extended' scenes from the movie with some entertaining, seemingly ad-libbed, lines. In the main movie scene itself, the skilift scene is a highlight, a quirky little classic, but gets one thinking "why oh why don't more movies use the 'multi-camera angles option" they said they were going to when DVD was coming out, and why couldn't this have been one of them?' (still immensely cool though).

Bottom line: don't expect it to terrify you out of your wits, but don't pass it up because of that. There's a sea of movies along these general lines within its particular subgenre of horror, and a lot of them are good, but "Shredder" is, in spite of some flaws, several notches above the average. Recommended.

Direct to Video - 80s Style.......2006-01-13

This is the fourth and last of the direct to video efforts that Tim Kincaid wrote and directed for Charles Band between 1985 and 1987. As with "Mutant Hunt," "Breeders" and "Robot Holocaust", this movie, originally called "Maximum Thrust", was shot in 10 days for around $100,000 and like those films it has production values and locations only a notch above the late 1960s, early 1970s work of NYC exploitation filmmakers like Doris Wishman and is far less enjoyable.

The story is kooky and somewhat ambitious given the budget. The lead character is a Six Million Dollar Man-like cyborg with replacement parts above and below the waistline, hence the original title. He is protecting a visiting Caribbean president and his wife from various assasination attempts. The wife is played completely over the top and seems intended to resemble Imelda Marcos. Kincaid tries to inject a bit of social content by having the president's very serious daughter lament her parent's exploitation of the her poor countrymen. Meanwhile a group of former islanders with a surprising connection to the first family dance in a Brooklyn warehouse and skin various folks (cue some impressive Ed French make up effects).

Unfortunately, the direction is completely wooden. The camera remains locked down throughout and everything plays out in a master shot or a two shot, even the fight scenes. It feels like some of Andy Milligan's work in California from around the same time and probably could have benefited from shooting in 16 mm rather than 35 mm. Charles Band's post-production people probably spent less than a day editing the thing together and slapping on some canned music.

Two low-wattage highlights: the garroting of pre-"Rent" Tony nominee Daphine Rubin-Vega in the opening few minutes and a subsequent scene in which a woman is blown up by a bomb implanted in her back and is clearly replaced by a cardboard cut-out just before the explosion.

A very messed up movie........2006-01-11

This film might have worked if the budget was larger than a teenagers allowance. The ingredients for this movie stew include cyborgs, voodoo, political assasination and human sacrifice; all languidly mixed together and under-cooked.

I got about halfway through this grainy-filmed opus before I fell asleep. Do yourself a favor and skip this movie.
