Happy Birthday to Me typifies the horror genre prior to the self-reflection and irony that saturated the genre in the late '80s and '90s. A solid cast, decent acting, a well-written script, and relatively high production values result in a solid movie that is engaging on its own in addition to offering a glimpse into the history of '80s horror. The plot follows the rules of the genre (later parodied in such films as the Scream and Scary Movie series). A number of teenagers (played by actors who appear visibly older than their characters) from an elite prep school get into mischievous sexual situations fueled by alcohol and pot smoking. As teens start to disappear, murdered in a variety of violent ways, the film suggests a number of suspects. Is the killer the troubled star played by Melissa Sue Anderson who lost her overbearing, social-climbing mother in a car accident that she survived? Or is it the stern school mistress, the wacky, cool social clown, the social misfit, or none of the above? The film keeps you guessing until the final scene. Happy Birthday is a must-see for serious fans of the horror genre and this release is a solid digital mastering of the movie. Hardcore fans should note that the DVD release was not able to secure the rights to the original soundtrack so this version features an alternate soundtrack of largely nondescript '80s electronic music. --Brian Saltzman

Just finished the DVD of this 1980 slasher classic, and, as mentioned in previous posts, Columbia's lame-brained decision to alter the ENTIRE soundtrack completely compromises the tension, pace, and feel of this once-wonderful thriller. Only the closing credit song remains the same. From the putrid opening dance-ditty (played even throughout the first murder sequence!) to the mind-numbingly awful soundtrack changes during the dance sequence and ALL the murder scenes, this plays like an entirely different--and bad--movie. And let's not get started on that terribly inept DVD cover art...why not stick with the brilliant original shish-kebab art (here it is found as an insert)? Do yourself and your fellow horror fans a favor and skip buying this DVD: it'll be something audiences could never forgive, and a lesson Columbia should never be allowed to forget.

Creative Slasher that satisfies........2006-12-29

"Happy Birthday To Me" isn't going to win an Oscar or any other Hollywood awards BUT~!! It is a good slasher flick.
Creative for the genre ,a genre that I love.I hear people complain that theres not enough blood or gore in it ,blah blah blah..but I am a die hard slasher fan and it satisfied me.
The kills are creative and the plot has some good twists and a satisfying ending ,you have your jock ,nerd, popular girl, new girl, and all the usual suspects .Glen Ford lends his talent and name to make this movie more credible , and you also have Mellisa Sue Anderson of Little House On The Prairie fame as the heroine .and a young Tracey E Bregman of The Young & The Restless who gives an impressive performance.
Instead of the woods you have a collage campus as the setting.If your into 80's slashers this movie satisfies, it's a must for the collector.

I was quite pleased with Happy Birthday to Me. Let me just say it is NOT a blockbuster movie. But for 1981, it wasn't half bad. The special effects were kind of cheesey, however, the acting for it's time was pretty good. I'm sure that nowaday's with the same plot, and maybe a different title(cuz the title is kinda corney) this movie would do excellently.

I was not impressed with the death count however. Almost half the over-sexed, booze induced kids lived. However, the plot, kind of over shadows that. The viewer is definatly wondering, "What the hell is going on?" And also "Where is this movie going?".

I will say one thing without spoiling the movie, I now know where Wes Craven found the idea for Scream 3!

Overall, Good movie, Excellent plot, Good Acting, However low death Count. 4 Stars!

It's definitely not the most spectacular horror movie, but it's full of ridiculous twists and non-sensical plot lines.

A must watch for a lover of the corny classic horror movie.

Clifford is transformed into a television series fom a book and they did a grand job at it. I love Clifford's Birthday I watch that all the time. The animation is great and everybody is likeable. I recommend this show.

Another great DVD based on a popular character.......2002-05-25

This DVD is based on the books and the new PBS series of Cliffor, the big red dog. The clifford series teaches some basic lessons on friendship and other important issues.
The DVD has two sets of four episodes for a total of eight. From the main menu, you can choose which chapter you would like to see, either "Happy Birthday Clifford" or "Puppy Love". Each chapter plays four episodes.
The only negative thing about this DVD is that after you watch one complete chapter, it goes back to the menu where you have to manually select the next group of episodes.
There is a fun game called Cleo's Groovy Grooming Shop where you can dress up Clifford and his friends using your DVD remote control! There are two other features: Real-life doggy friends and Parenting tips.
Bottom line: Another great Clifford DVD, but I wouldn't consider it a great DVD for the car.

This DVD is among my all time favorites for young children. Charmingly narrated, each of the six short stories details some adventure of the loveable stuffed toys in a children's playroom. Whether hosting a celebration for a stuffed dog who has never had a birthday party, enjoying a sports challenge to win homemade trophies, or sailing down the river in homemade boats, the stuffed toys are filled with personality, caring, and humor. One of my favorite parts? There is absolutely nothing scary in any of these stories. Another plus: You can choose to play one of the ten-minute stories at a time, a set of three for a half-hour show, or all six. I have given this DVD, and others in the series, as gifts numerous times, and they have always been a hit. A definite five-star, in my book!

Shivers went up my spine as celebrities kissed, bowed, and/or gave heartfelt happy birthday wishes to this Dublin wit. It is easily seen that each line is read with tone and emotion of true effort, evincing all participants definitely wanted to be a part of this and were in some way affected by his genius, making the DVD even more special. Incredibly wonderful DVD.

Happy Birthday Oscar Wilde.......2005-08-04

If you are a fan of Oscar Wilde you will love this DVD. Some of the biggest stars of stage, screen and music are part of this celebration of what would have been Oscar's 150th birthday.
I found it very entertaining and educational. Really fun watching and listening to Martin Sheen, Bono, Lily Tomlin etc enjoying the wit of this great writer.

I just watched "Happy Birthday Oscar Wilde". Wow, full of amazing quotes and hilarious one liners from Wilde. There's a quote to suit every mood recited by a Hollywood star to suit every fancy. You get a great sense of his life through the quotes, from his sharp observations of society at the time to his persecution for being a gay man when it was illegal. One moment your laughing, next, you on the verge of tears. Well worth watching, if your not a fan of Oscar Wilde after this... there's no hope for you.

Bittersweet Love Affair.......2007-05-23

This movie traced the relationship between a man (Koo) and a woman (Liu) who were soul mates and yet couldn't commit to one another despite their affection and love for one another. Liu had the problem of commitment because since she was a girl, the people that she cared about would leave her (un)intentionally. Therefore, she had this defence mechanism of not committing herself emotionally to anybody so as not to get hurt anymore. Koo had this problem of commitment and over the years knowing Liu, he would be going out with various women. They both had the best friends in a hairdresser who's this movie's narrator. The hairdresser loved Liu but Liu wasn't interested. This on and off relationship would carry on for years and we got to see them transforming from university students into matured adults. The name of the movie was where every year, no matter what happened, Koo would ring her to sing the song to her. One day, it just so happened that Koo called Liu to say that he was getting married & only years later, we found out the reason why they would forever remain as lovers separated by life circumstances. Was it tragic or was it just the way life planned its path. This movie wouldn't be suitable for somebody that yearned for instant gratification but it would suit somebody who could sit through hours just to get the essence of feel of the movie as in "In the Mood for Love" even though its aesthetic presentation is nowhere near as in the latter description. A commendable movie and a movie that's starred by arguably two of the biggest stars in Asia right now.

a very good romance .......2007-05-16

by a very talented actress. the story was very down to earth likable . although the guy who sang the out of tune 'happy birthday to you' might drive you crazy, but it's a necessary ear-sore. of course it's a 'you love me, me loves other person, the other person loves you' format, but it's good format refreshingly performed by the wonderful ms. liu. and the sound track was also very pleasant, except when that guy sang 'happy birthday to you'.
this movie is good for the young and those still young at heart (i mean the matured female, of course). they'd love and enjoy this film a lot.

Really caught me by surprise..........2005-06-25

My girlfriend insisted that I atleast give this movie a chance. I, of course being as stubborn as I am refused to give it a chance until she finally had me sitting in front of the TV.

Amazingly enough, I really loved it. Tif Luckenbill, as Lenny, has you laughing up a storm, and then your mouth literally falls open as you see him cause the start of everyone's sudden change.

Sam Neave really knew how to make a small thing huge.

Defintely worth checking out.

Superb New Film from Wonderful New Talent.......2004-11-22

With Cry Funny Happy, Sam Neave has managed to grab you, shake you and really show you what can be done without CG and 9 figure budgets.

I thoroughly recommend that you all sit down and have a Cry Funny Happy evening so that you can see what Im talking about, you wont be disappointed. Finally... Art for Arts sake not for money's sake. Go see it!
