Science fiction and romance collide in The Fountain, the ambitious third feature from director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream), who labored for four years to complete this epic-sized love story that stretches across centuries and galaxies. Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz (Aronofsky's real-life companion) play lovers in each of the film's three settings--16th century Europe and America (Jackman is a Spanish explorer searching for Incan magic), the present day (Jackman is a doctor attempting to cure his dying wife), and the 26th century (Jackman is a space traveler seeking a gateway to the afterlife)--who struggle mightily to stay united, only to lose each other time and again. Aronofsky may not have chosen the easiest presentation for audiences to absorb his theories on the lasting qualities of life and the transformative powers of death--the final sequence, in particular, with a bald Jackman floating through space in a bubble, harks back uncomfortably to "head movies" of the late '60s--but his leads have considerable chemistry (and look terrific to boot), which goes a long way towards securing viewers' hopes for a happy ending. Critical reception for The Fountain has been nothing short of bloodthirsty, with Cannes audiences booing, but there are elements to enjoy here, even if the premise throws one for a loop. Ellen Burstyn (who earned an Oscar nomination for Requiem) delivers a typically solid performance as Jackman's boss in the present day sequence, and special effects (most done without the benefit of CGI) are also impressive given the film's low budget (spurred by a mid-production shutdown after original stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett ankled the picture). And science-fiction fans whose tastes run towards the metaphysical (Asimov, Le Guin) will appreciate the attempt to present the genre in a serious light. -- Paul Gaita

Description

Yesterday, today, tomorrow. Past, present, future. Through time and space, one man embarks on a bold 1000-year odyssey to defeat humankind's most indomitable foe: Death. Hugh Jackman plays that man, devoted to one woman (Rachel Weisz) and determined to protect her from forces that threaten her existence. His quest leads him to a Tree of Life...and to an adventure into eternity. Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) directs, continuing his string of imaginative, involving filmmaking with a tale alive with ideas and filled with astonishing vistas. "Not many films can blow your mind and break your heart at the same time, but this one will" (Drew McWeeny, Ain't It Cool News).

5 out of 5 stars As bizarre as it was I loved this film.......2007-07-09

I am a huge Hugh Jackman fan and this film was just wonderful for him. I also love Rachel Weisz. Visually stunning and makes you think. Sometimes films that attempt this kind of story just fall flat, but this one works and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Movie - No Extra Features.......2007-07-09

This was an interesting movie with some good visuals. The plot was a little hard to follow. I understood the two time-lines easily but the third bald man in the bubble was less clear to me. I read some other reviews and it was still not particularly clear despite the fact that I can usually follow the plot-lines of all but the most obscure movies (Naked Lunch stumped me a decade or more ago as well).

Despite the high cost of the HD DVD there were not extra features.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Film - Great Story.......2007-07-09

I almost didn't rent this film because of the poor ratings. That would have been a big mistake because I found this film to be a powerful, emotional story full of symbolism. Unlike the other reviewers, I did not find it that complex if you understood the symbolism in the story and felt that it was very well put together and had great images. With so much trash out there where the major movie houses just keep repeating the same themes / ideas / movies over and over, it is wonderfully refreshing to have thought provoking and unique films such as The Fountain to foster and support creativity in ideas and presentation. This film is well worth $0.99 to rent, but it is an emotional film so if you are in the mood for a comedy or mindless action film you should probably look elsewhere... Enjoy! I did!

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst movies of all time The Fouintain ...Spews.......2007-07-08

the title says it all. Save your money, don't rent this. Even for $.99 it was a wasre of money. Despite the 1hr 37 minutes of lousy movie does't really seem like it is that long because the same lousy clips are shown over and over again just to reinforce the agony of watching this film.

3 out of 5 stars Love and Hate.......2007-07-08

Darren Aronofsy's made a great love story! The visuals were beautiful, and it was full of emotion. But you really had to think hard to try to follow what was happening in the film. Granted the story was easy, but the fantasy sequences needed to be explained a little bit better. He didn't quit explain clearly if Hugh Jackman's character was really in the future or had he really been in the past. At one point I thought he was just tripping on something! I love fantasy, but I also love movies that flow and this had a few bumps in the road.

Based on Robert Harling's play, this comedy-drama directed by Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) follows several years in the lives of women who regularly see one another at a beauty shop in their small Louisiana town. The story deepens as Julia Roberts, playing a serious diabetic and the daughter of Sally Field, goes downhill in her health. But as an ensemble piece, this is one of those enjoyably lumpy tearjerkers with many years' worth of stored truths suddenly being shared between the characters, lots of grievances aired, that sort of thing. Daryl Hannah and Shirley MacLaine assume the most eccentric roles, Dolly Parton the most fun, and Olympia Dukakis the most dignified, while Sally Field essentially provides the moral and emotional center of the movie. --Tom Keogh

Steel Magnolias is one of my very favorite movies. I am replacing my VHS tapes with DVDs and it was one of the first ones I replaced. I love the special edition DVD because it told the story of the writer's sister who died young. It gives the movie even more special meaning knowing that it's based on a real life situation rather than one that's completely fictitious. Five Stars!

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Movie!.......2007-05-26

This is one of my favorite all-time movies. It's set in Lousiana. Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Olivia Dukakis, Shirley Maclaine, Dolly Parton, and Darryl Hannah are the main stars of the movie. It starts out as a group of women in a beauty salon getting ready for Julia Roberts' character's wedding. We meet Darryl Hannah's character in the beginning as she comes by looking for work and a place to stay. The story goes over a period of time from Shelby's wedding to the birth of her son and her kidney transplant and her death. At the end of the movie, it shows Darryl Hannah's character heading off to the hospital to have her baby. During the movie, Darry's character went to beauty school, fell in love, got married, and became pregnant. Too bad that a sequel was not made.

5 out of 5 stars Endeering from beginning to end... don't miss it!.......2007-05-22

Steel Magnolias is a movie about family, love, and relationships. The plot revolves around a beauty parlor where the main characters go to become beautiful. The character of the beauty parlor owner is played by Dolly Parton.

At Truvy's Beauty Parlor in Louisiana we learn all about these close group of friends and soon learn the secrets these women carry in their hearts.

M'Lynn, played by Sally Fields is married to Drum Eatenton, a playful man who at the start of the film is busy shooting birds that are perched on a tree on his property. This drives us all crazy, especially those of us that firmly believe on the protection of the environment... but they have a very special reason as a motive.

Daughter of Drum and M'Lynn Eatenton, Shelby, superbly played by Julia Roberts is getting married and we soon see these women go to visit the beauty parlor in preparation for the big day. Annelle Dupuy Desoto, played by Daryl Hannah, has just joined the staff as a hair dresser, "a glamour technician," and soon the women are hard at finding all about "her past" because even though she is "the sweetest thing" just live through puberty and you must have a past.

Ouiser Boudreaux, a bitter, ill tempered and outspoken lady, played deserving of an award by Shirley MacLaine joins the women and she puts Annelle through a rather fun and entertainment interview.

Clairee, a recently widowed woman, played by Olympia Dukakis is the only person that truly understand Ouiser... and the give and take of these women is so endearing and captivating, that we soon find ourselves enchanted by this movie.

As the movie develops we find ourselves involved in the pain and heartache of the challenges these women face. We cried, we laughed, and we walked away wishing that our town would have the close relationships these families share. Indeed a movie worthy of becoming part of any collection. Don't miss it...

With refreshing intelligence, A Walk to Remember offers welcome relief from the recent onslaught of teen-movie crudeness. Adapted from the novel by Nicholas Sparks and transplanted from 1958 to the present day, this admirable teen romance recognizes that two 18-year-olds--Landon (Shane West) and Jamie (pop singer Mandy Moore)--can be smart, mature, and sensible about the very real love they share. He's a popular kid in the cool crowd. She's got a goody-goody reputation as the dowdy daughter of a local minister (Peter Coyote); her values and priorities aren't rooted in peer pressure, and Landon feels blessed by her self-assured nobility. Their mutual affection inevitably heads into Love Story territory, but the movie is honest enough to survive its own schmaltz, and its attractive cast (including Daryl Hannah as Landon's mom) embraces a tone of sincerity and mutual respect. Finally... a teen movie with teens you can admire. --Jeff Shannon

Love brings together what peer pressure and lifestyles seek to keep apart in this coming-of-age story based on the bestselling book. Teen idol Shane West and multiplatinum recording star Mandy Moore star as two high schoolers -- she a straitlaced preacher's daughter and he an unmotivated delinquent. 5 out of 5 stars A really touching story.......2007-07-04

This sweet chick flick really made me cry. Some teen romances are so cheesy like the Notebook. It's so bad it makes you roll your eyes. But "A Walk to Remember" is different. It's touching and sweet in a modern, beautiful way. I really did cry through the movie, especially the part where Jamie is dying and they get married. What's so beautiful and real is that London wasn't such a good person before he meet Jamie and she changed him and made him a better person. And they fell in love. But the romance and the sweet touching moments where she realizes she loves him, where he finally comes to terms with who he is, when she dies, when they marry, when he forgives his father aren't corny like "The Notebook" there beautifuly acted and really bittersweet. The tears just came rolling down my cheek. Especially when Switchfoot starts to sing and Jamie's walking down the asile and London is there and they're about to say their vows. Two young people who finally deserve your respect onscreen. Instead of the usual teen-gross out comedy, this is instead a deeply moving drama that's about faith and life and love. Mandy Moore is amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this DVD.......2007-06-27

If you're a teenaged girl or a middle-aged man, a romantic or a cynic, see this movie. It's been described as a "Love Story" for the millenium, but having seen that movie when it first came out, I must say "A Walk to Remember" is superior. Sure, you'll cry, but you will also feel uplifted and wanting to be like the protagonists in the film. If you liked Nicholas Sparks' novel that was the basis for this movie, you will like this for many of the same reasons. It is not a word for word adaptation of the book, but I think many of the changes (principally changing the setting from 1958 to the present day) make this movie more accessible to a wider audience. A word of caution, however, the extras on the DVD include two commentaries: by the director, Moore and West in one, Sparks and the author of the screenplay in the other. It's interesting to hear the two authors talk about the film, but the director and actors seem a little flippant in theirs, which might spoil the overall impression of the movie for you. After viewing the commentary again, though, I feel there are some moments of emotion and sincerity that are well expressed--especially Shane West stating he was proud to have been part of the film, and all three saying how the film changed their lives for the better.

5 out of 5 stars A Walk To Remember.......2007-06-27

I really enjoyed this movie when I saw it on cable, that I had to purchase it for my DVD collection. I think that Mandy Moore and Shane West did a wonderful job in their perfomances of Jamie and Landon. They really convinced me that they really cared about each other. And of course I cried (and still cry), with almost every scene! I must admit, there are some cheesey moments to it, (like the dancing on the porch balcony), but that does not bother me one bit. The story is just so heart warming and inspirational and the perfomances so well done, that this movie has become an all time favorite of mine. I guess I must sound like a pathetic romantic, but I can not help it. I just love this movie!

4 out of 5 stars A heart-warming chick flick........2007-06-21

A Walk to Remember stars Mandy Moore and Shane West. I remember when it first came out, it was the "IT" movie to see. Even now, roughly 5 years after its initial release, teens are oogling not only over the eye candy, but also from the heartwarming storyline.

So what's this movie about? Basically, you have a popular guy, Landon, and a geeky girl, Jamie, who are obviously from completely different worlds. When the two are forced together due to a school play, things heat up between the two and they eventually fall in love. Unfortunately, something comes between them that tries to pull them apart.

So what's to like about this movie? First, I believe this was Mandy Moore's debut in acting. She does a pretty good job playing her role and Shane West does a superb job as usual. Second, this movie brings out a ton of different emotions. You feel sympathetic, you feel happy, you feel sad, and you feel the cockles of your heart warming up. A really good movie not only makes you think, but also strikes a chord with you and this movie certainly did. Third, this is just an overall entertaining film. If you've read the book, you know what's going to happen, but that won't stop you from enjoying the film.

And what's not to like? The storyline is nothing new. We've seen it with Never Been Kissed and She's All That. The ending is different from the majority of movies with the same storyline but it's still not a ground-breaking film.

If you're looking for a cute, chick flick-type movie to watch, this is a great example. But keep a tissue box handy. You might need it.

5 out of 5 stars Always Remembered.......2007-05-31

A very well written story of life in the high school years. Exactly as I remember it being when I was in school. From what Grandchildren say it still is.

There's a reason why Cindy Crawford was dubbed "Baby Gia" when she first hit the modeling scene. Indeed, Crawford, now the world's best-known supermodel, greatly resembled model Gia Carangi, who went from high school to the cover of British Vogue in less than two years. Carangi appeared on many more covers of Vogue (French, British, Italian, and American) and Cosmopolitan before dying of complications from AIDS (she was an IV heroin user) in 1986. Now most people recognize Carangi's name from this powerful HBO film that stars Golden Globe-winner Angelina Jolie, who comes by her talent honestly. Jolie is the daughter of veteran actor Jon Voight, and her own training as a model serves her well--she has the moves. Throughout, she's heartbreaking--as no doubt the real Carangi was--effective, and stunning.

With good source material (Stephen Fried's A Thing of Beauty: The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia), Jolie's stunning performance, and strong directing by Michael Cristofer, the movie goes beyond the merely sensational. The script was cowritten by Cristofer and novelist Jay McInerney, whose Bright Lights, Big City covers similar territory. As a cautionary tale, Gia works. But to watch Jolie in her character's tragic self-destruction is utterly compelling. --N.F. Mendoza

3 out of 5 stars Physical Beauty has its' price. . ........2007-07-06

Gia, an immeasurably intense phenom, and her life is posited well by Jolie. At times, you could feel Jolie portray her own life in the character. Liberal or Conservative, this film will stretch your comfort zone.

5 out of 5 stars i think this movie was great!!!.......2007-07-04

i think this movie was great!!!it showed all the uglyniess that can happen when on drugs.i felt it was a great movie and gia was beautiful!!

4 out of 5 stars cast better than direction.......2007-05-30

Cast is excellent, Jolie totally believable. 4 stars because of her.
Something bugs me about direction. At times "told" as documentary, at times overdramatized... It's like director wasn't quite sure how to tell the story.
Script also has a few holes in it, for people not familiar with Gia Carangi story - Why wasn't her mother there for her, ever? What happened to her friends? Actually what happened to all the people a person in her 20s has around her? Was her agent not only her second mother but also the only friend?
And finally, what was it about Gia that propelled her into stratosphere, just like that?
On last note, this film will most likely leave you feeling "heavy" and depressed.

3 out of 5 stars Who knew?.......2007-05-18

In this true life portrayal of Gia Marie Carangi's life, Angeline Jolie lays the ground work for her monumental arrival to the big screen. I think with this film, Jolie establishes herself as the most courageous actress to grace the scene in quite sometime. On another note, it's sad that someone as beautiful as Gia Carangi struggled with so many demons. You never know what's going on in someone's mind. In any event, Angelina Jolie is magnificent!

4 out of 5 stars Buena........2007-05-09

Angelina como la queremos ver!
Con cruel exposición de la realidad del mundo del modelage.

This screen adaptation of John Irving's novel A Prayer for Owen Meany was appreciated much more by audiences than by the majority of disapproving critics. Irving's books have fared only moderately well on film, and while The World According to Garp garnered critical praise, The Hotel New Hampshire was waiting in the wings to counteract the fanfare. Simon Birch is one of those nostalgic movies--determined to view the past in rose-colored hues--despite the fact that its protagonist, a dwarf named Simon Birch, is wholeheartedly unsympathetic. The film opens weepily, with Jim Carrey as the adult version of the film's main character and narrator, Joe Wenteworth (played as a youth by the serious young actor Joseph Mazzello). He's mourning at the grave of his best childhood friend, Simon Birch, with whom he had bonded instantly because both were misfits--one a dwarf, the other illegitimate. The deck is stacked from the beginning, especially when the camera dwells on Joe's luscious mom, Rebecca (Ashley Judd), who refuses to reveal the identity of Joe's father, which in turn urges Simon and Joe to embark on a quest to discover Joe's paternity. In a plot point that resembles The Scarlet Letter, the tide of fate turns on the "immoral" mom just as she's on the verge of finding true love with a decent fellow (played by Oliver Platt). Simon Birch ultimately descends into crudeness, though it asks the audience to continue to engage with its crass lead character. By the end, the film is reduced to drivel, cliché, and melodrama to tug our heartstrings into submission. All the things that should have been the film's focus--guilt, self-loathing, and redemption--remain elusive. --Paula Nechak

He's on a constant search to discover his destiny, but somehow manages to find nothing but trouble! Meanwhile, Simon's loyal best friend, Joe (Joseph Mazzello -- JURASSIC PARK, RADIO FLYER), is searching for the identity of his father, a secret his beautiful mother (Judd) has guarded Joe's entire life. Several emotions wrapped up in one fine movie. Sad, happy, wasrm hearted, funny. Just a great movie with exceptional acting. An enjoyable film for anyone...

4 out of 5 stars Heartwarming film that pulls at your heart strings.......2007-06-14

this is a story about two 12 year friends who have the best times together, except one is about 2 foot tall, and seen as an outcast to the town. However, Simon Birch does not let that get him down, he has faith and believes he is "going to be a hero". Through many adversities, these gruesome twosome continue to do amazing things, and entertain you throughout the whole movie. you will laugh, and cry. At times, the "emotions" get a bit thick and artificial, but overall, the story is well developed. worth a viewing or two.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining.......2007-06-12

I have an old VHS copy of this film which I have watched over and over again and also have lent to others who really enjoyed it. I am glad I can add a DVD to the collection. Also have the soundtrack and the songs are great.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Glad I Didn't Listen to the Critics.......2007-06-08

This movie is a charmer. Funnier than you expect, more touching than you would think, an all around "cute" movie. Maybe you don't like cute movies. Okay. Then you should listen to the critics who slammed this film. This film has become one of our family favorites, we don't purchase many films since there are so few that we want to watch more than once. We purchased this one after renting it several times. We've watched it over and over, whenever we need a little laugh. It's grown up enough for adults and clean enough for all but very young children. There are some references to "boobs" and "balls" but that's about as graphic as it gets. Buy this movie, don't worry about the critics.

1 out of 5 stars An awful DVD.......2007-07-04

This movie was awful. No plot, poor acting and crappy effects. What makes it worse is that I bought it in high definition Blu-ray. No wonder it went so quickly from the theater to DVD. Avoid like the plague!

3 out of 5 stars Well, my girlfriend liked it..........2007-06-28

I didn't really like this movie...I feel the targeted audience for this movie didn't include me. I am a very thoughtful person, but saying this movie was coherent and meaningful would be a stretch. The visuals were good...the acting was good...I just didn't enjoy it. The best way I can put it is that when the movie was over I thought to myself..."Ok...and that two hours was for what?" My girlfriend cried a few times and she said it was good...so take that any which way you will.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful and strange.......2007-06-26

I think I would have enjoyed this movie alot more if it wasn't trying so hard to be artsy. But it was enjoyable and bizarre in it's own way.
Recommended if anything to show off the blue-ray capabilities of a pretty movie.

5 out of 5 stars Comments on Blu-ray edition.......2007-06-25

While many of the other reviews for The Fountain do a wonderful job of relaying the emotional context of this movie, and the elegant and dazzling cinematography that encompasses it, I'd like to take the opportunity to comment on the Blu-ray edition of this movie.

First off, for all you doubters and disbelievers (like myself before purchasing this movie), there is a HUGH difference between watching this movie in 1080p* (high definition) and 480p (standard definition). The image is much crisper, the lines that separate and define the objects in the movie are well... more defined, and it is just all around a more visually appealing experience. The movie is also in 1:85:1 ratio, so for those of you who have widescreen televisions you'll be able to enjoy a full screen non-letterboxed experience. The sound also seems much deeper and comes through my speakers crystal clear. The one downfall to the Blu-ray edition is that some of the scenes have a lot of image noise in them that I didn't notice in the standard DVD release. Although, I've seen Aronofsky deliberately create image noise in his other films (PI comes to mind) so this may be intentional.

Also of great interest to me was the modified menu for this movie. It doesn't have a traditional DVD menu. The DVD menu is completely interactive while the movie is playing. In other words, you don't have to stop and exit the movie to view the different chapters of the movie, or even view / preview the bonus material for that matter. The movie has a built in menu that allows you to switch subtitles, language, visually view chapters of the movie and jump between them, and preview the features available on the disc without ever having to stop the movie - this in an interesting diversion from the traditional DVD that has a frontend in which you preview / review the bonus material and then choose to start the movie. On this disc, the movie starts right away, and then while the movie is playing you can choose to browse the menu. To me, this is a much better viewing experience, as it avoided all the intro / commercials at the beginning of the disc, and gets you right into the movie without having to go through a half dozen menus.

As far as features go, there are many more features on the Blu-ray release than on the standard DVD release. One of these supplements is the astounding "Peter Parks montage" that takes some of the macro-photography used in the movie and sets it to a musical score; beautiful to watch, although I wish it would have been longer. There are also interviews, VFX documentaries, and storyboards that are not on the standard DVD release. Anybody who is a fan of this movie and has the hardware should put aside their doubt and get the Blu-ray edition. It's certainly worth the extra $9 I paid for it.

*The movie is 1080p, but the special features are either 480p or 480i.

2 out of 5 stars confusing plot line........2007-06-12

I was very disapointed with this film. The primise is ok, man tries to save dieing wife, but there are too many 'dream sequences' that really destroy the movie. A serious and sad subject like the one tackled here are not my favorite, but other reviews gave it good marks so I tried it. the biggest disconect for me was the confusing dream scenes, they seemed to distract rather than add to the plot of the movie. I did not seem to get a better understanding of the characters from the dream sequences, but rather got bored and wished they would end. If you could return an opened DVD this one would be sent back.

Garry Marshall's 1988 drama about a 30-year friendship between two women, one wealthy (Barbara Hershey) and the other (Bette Midler) seeking her fortune in show business, is well written (based on the novel by Iris Rainer Dart) and nicely textured in its contrast between the characters' separate destinies. When Hershey becomes ill with cancer, the film takes a predictably sentimental course, yet Marshall brings out the best in both actresses and catches some very fine drama. The film is a little too long, perhaps, but overall it is a fine experience. --Tom Keogh

I absolutely love this movie!!!! It is one of a few movies that I can watch over and over and over and over again, and never get tired of it. Both Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey gave magnificent performances, portraying what a true, loving friendship is all about. I love the scene when CC tells Hillary she ended their friendship and didn't even tell her. I know exactly how that feels (RC). And, the producers were point on in picking Mayim Bialik to play the young CC, she was perfect match. I get misty everytime, at the same scenes. Wonderful acting of a wonderful story!!

I love this movie! This is a great chick flick and best friend (BF) flick. I cry everytime I watch it!

A dazzling and yet frequently maddening bid to bring the movie musical kicking and screaming into the 21st century, Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge bears no relation to the many previous films set in the famous Parisian nightclub. This may appear to be Paris in the 1890s, with can-can dancers, bohemian denizens like Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo), and ribaldry at every turn, but it's really Luhrmann's pop-cultural wonderland. Everyone and everything is encouraged to shatter boundaries of time and texture, colliding and careening in a fast-cutting frenzy that thinks nothing of casting Elton John's "Your Song" 80 years before its time. Nothing is original in this kaleidoscopic, absinthe-inspired love tragedy--the words, the music, it's all been heard before. But when filtered through Luhrmann's love for pop songs and timeless showmanship, you're reminded of the cinema's power to renew itself while paying homage to its past.

Luhrmann's overall success with his third "red-curtain" extravaganza (following Strictly Ballroom and William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet) is wildly debatable: the scenario is simple to the point of silliness, and how can you appreciate choreography when it's been diced into hash by attention-deficit editing? Still, there's something genuine brewing between costars Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman (as, respectively, a poor writer and his unobtainable object of desire), and their vocal talents are impressive enough to match Luhrmann's orgy of extraordinary sets, costumes, and digital wizardry. The movie's novelty may wear thin, along with its shallow indulgence of a marketable soundtrack, but Luhrmann's inventiveness yields moments that border on ecstasy, when sound and vision point the way to a moribund genre's joyously welcomed revival. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A spectacle beyond anything you've ever witnessed. An experience beyond everything you've ever imagined. Behind the red velvet curtain, the ultimate seduction of your senses is about to begin. Welcome to the Moulin Rouge! Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor sing, dance and scale the heights of passionate abandon in the year's most talked-about movie from visionary director Baz Luhrmann (William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, Strictly Ballroom). Enter a tantalizing world that celebrates truth, beauty, freedom and above all things, love.

5 out of 5 stars Moulin Rouge!.......2007-06-01

What a GREAT Musical! You have to watch it in a surround sound system and very loud to relly enjoy the music and details of the actors performance... Outstanding! I love the part of Roxxane ina Tango... WOW!

5 out of 5 stars Moulin Rouge - Very Entertaining!.......2007-05-25

I did not go to see this movie when it was in the theaters. So when it was shown on TV last month I watched it and fell in love with it. I'm sure this movie does not appeal to everyone but I think it's great. I think the casting is right on. The music is fabulous. The look of the movie is colorful and fun to watch. I bought the DVD and watch this movie over and over. I never tire of it!

5 out of 5 stars Its the way of life... A life less Ordinary all over again!.......2007-05-17

Being a huge Ewan Mcgregor fan, I was ecstatic that he was doing another "A Life Less Ordinary", and by the way, if you haven't seen that, you have too! This is the kind of film that makes you want to jump up and down, cry, cover your face with a pillow, and feel like the worlds your oyster. I know, that is probably the cheesiest line ever, but this movie has it's cheesy moments as well. Things to look out for are all the great music, maybe not the right time-period, but its the same kind of thing as Marie Antoinette, fun, loud things that bring in a comic air, without being totally over the top. But Moulin Rouge has to have its over the top moments, otherwise it wouldn't go with the Bohemiam Revolution... Beauty, Freedom, Peace and Love. It sounds totally Hippie esque, but after seeing it, you don't have to sleep in a teepee. You just have to jump in front of moving cars, waving pamphlets about how great the red cedars are.
But to be honest, the part that really gets you, is that in the very first scene an argentinian falls through the ceiling, and they all start singing the Sound of Music. I know, I know, a teensy (aka huge) bit unorthodox, but hey, I always loved people falling through celings, maybe it was growing up with Looney Toons.

1 out of 5 stars if garish sights & blaring volume were what constituted high art, this would be "grand illusion".......2007-05-12

baz luhrmanns insufferably stupid backstage melodrama ranks among the worst big budget films of the century to date. ten minutes of this work of "art" was enough to convince me of its low quality, bt i stayed with it, and then (hoping id gain some insight) i even listened to the creators commentary track: a self-indulgent bit of verbal vomit surpassing even the nonsense i was looking at! oh come on folks, do you TRUTHFULLY find this either entertaining or edifying? now lets hear the brickabats from the fans of this messterpiece; ive no doubt they will tell me what a maroon i am for pointing out that the emperor is naked...

5 out of 5 stars Very Bizarre and Thoroughly Entertaining.......2007-05-08

Moulin Rouge is one of those movies that really stands out from the crowd, for its sheer uniqueness and for being highly-stylized. Being absolutely hilarious is a plus too!

Larry McMurtry's novel becomes a somewhat lumpy film as directed by James L. Brooks (As Good As It Gets). Nevertheless, it is entirely winning, with Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger playing a combative mother and daughter who see each other through various ups and downs in love and loss, and most especially through a terminal illness endured by Winger's character. Jack Nicholson deservedly won an Oscar for his supporting role as a free-spirited astronaut who backs away from a romance with MacLaine and then returns in the clutch. As he always does, Brooks keeps things from getting too soapy with his intense concentration on the soulful evolution of his characters. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Terms of Endearment.......2007-07-09

James L. Brooks's poignant "Endearment" makes us laugh and cry in roughly equal measure. MacLaine netted a richly deserved Oscar playing Aurora, and Winger holds her own as long-suffering Emma. In truth, their onscreen chemistry helps obscure the fact that the two actresses look nothing alike. Supporting the female stars are Danny DeVito, Jeff Daniels, and Jack Nicholson, stealing every scene he's in as a hard-drinking, womanizing former astronaut.

5 out of 5 stars AHEAD OF ITS TIME.......2007-03-29

This 1983 release was ahead of its time. It most definitely has a message for today's society. I did not so much GET it over twenty years ago when viewing it in the theater as I did when watching it on the DVD as a middle aged movie buff. Shirley MacLaine plays a somewhat flighty but still most desirable middle aged woman whose conflict with her sweet if not naive daughter, played by Debra Winger, is sometimes stormy but always loving. Jack Nicholson, as the next door neighbor, is outstanding as always and is a sleezy womanizing former astronaut who befriends Ms. MacLaine but by movie's end it is clear he loves her and is perhaps a changed man. A younger Jeff Daniels is convincing as Winger's cheating husband as is John Lithgow as the man taken with her innocent charms. This movie will make you laugh and cry and the musical score is one you will never forget. All serious movie buffs should have a copy of this.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless.......2007-03-13

Exactly how in the world did I never see this movie before? Reputation has made this out to be "the ultimate chick flick" upon which every other tear-jerker is judged. But it's definitely more of a character study than a weepy mushy movie. In fact, it's anything but mushy. Where it could of been over-sentimental, it was poignant. Where it could of been boring, it was insightful. And where it could of been corny, it was tongue-in-cheek. I don't think I need to say anything about the acting in it, if you've seen Terms of Endearment you know that Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, and Jack Nicholson bring their characters to a life rarely seen in movies. I just can't get over how great this movie was. The story is so good, it's so funny and at times among some of the saddest moments I've ever seen portrayed in the movies. I don't want to go any further for fear that I might spoil it for those who haven't seen this incredible story about life and love and laughter among family. This is an AMAZING and moving film!

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie!.......2007-03-08

I'd never seen it before, and was so pleased. Very quirky, but great.

This movie will break your heart but only because the characters are so real. It truly the captures the tumultous relationship between independent daughters and controlling mothers. The good and the bad.

I am a fan of Baz Luhrmann movies, because they present a modernized yet over-the-top fantasy world that refuses to apologize for itself. If you liked his modernized version of Romeo + Juliet, you'll love Moulin Rouge, it's even better and much wilder.

There are SO many lyrical references to other songs in this movie, that it might take dozens of repeat viewings to try and catch them all. And the way that lyrics are blended into dialogue is unprecedented and one of the best parts of the movie.

If you liked other highly-stylized movies such as Sin City or 300, you will also like Moulin Rouge.

If you like movie-musicals that blend moviemaking techniques with stage performance, such as Chicago, you will definitely like this one too.

Overall the movie is just too creative and artistic to be easy to describe, so I'm just going to tell you to go see it. As long as you let go of any expectation of realism, just sit back and enjoy the hilarious and heartwrenching show.
