Based on an obscure crime novel titled Tucker's People, Abraham Polonsky's Force of Evil has attained classic status since its release in 1948, when film noir was thriving on the fringes of the Hollywood studio system, where the shadowy attributes of noir were allowed their fullest expression. Which is to say, this gritty drama is drenched in greed, cynicism, and corruption of the soul, as embodied by John Garfield in one of his most memorable roles. He's perfectly cast as Joe Morse, a lawyer whose connection to a ruthless racketeer has nearly destroyed his sense of morality. His participation in a rigged numbers racket could prove disastrous for his high-strung older brother (superbly played by Thomas Gomez), whose small-time policy bank stands to go broke when the rigged numbers pay off--a financial windfall for Joe's powerful boss at everyone else's expense.
Joe's corruption is tempered only by remnants of guilt and his redeeming attraction to Edna (Marie Windsor), his brother's secretary, whose common decency gnaws at Joe's rotten conscience. But before Joe can rise from his self-made hell, Force of Evil takes him to the darkest pit of tragic humanity--a downward spiral perfectly expressed through George Barnes's exquisitely stark cinematography. In style and substance, this is quintessential noir, its plot unfolding with uncompromising toughness and intelligence. More's the pity, then, that director Polonsky was later victimized by the Hollywood blacklist, curtailing a promising career for two decades until Polonsky directed Robert Redford in 1969's Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here. It seems only fitting, then, that Polonsky's remarkable debut is now recognized as one of the finest dramas of its kind. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Force of Evil.......2007-06-22
A dark, cynical film about the culture of greed in America, "Force of Evil" helped earn director Polonsky and its talented star, John Garfield, a place on the Hollywood blacklist. With its edgy moral themes and exquisite angled lighting by George Barnes (who visited an Edward Hopper exhibit to achieve the look), "Evil" has influenced many, including Martin Scorsese. In his finest role, Garfield soars as a chiseled, hard-driving lawyer, abetted by Beatrice Pearson (as a secretarial voice of conscience) and Gomez, playing a stubborn businessman who equates his hated brother with gangsterism. Brutal and beautifully photographed.
The art of darkness.......2006-12-12
Force of Evil was a massive disappointment to me when I first saw it, but on a much belated second viewing I'm amazed I got it so wrong. The script is superb, the cast excellent - with John Garfield and Thomas Gomez on top form - and the scam all too believable. The relationship between Garfield's numbers racket lawyer and Beatrice Pearson's `nice' girl is also beautifully realised: in most films, the `nice' girl offers the chance of redemption, but this turns that cliché completely on its head - his interest is just to see how easy it will be to corrupt her, and they're both well aware that she really DOES want to be corrupted but needs to be talked into it to give her conscience an excuse. Mirroring his similar efforts to talk his brother into the clutches of the mob, the dialog in these scenes is astonishingly good, carrying and complimenting the theme of the film but never hitting you over the head with it. And the explosive moment of panic-stricken murder is as powerful as it is unexpectedly intense.
No extras, but a decent though not outstanding DVD transfer.
One of the classic noirs, with a great performance by John Garfield.......2006-11-17
Joe Morse (John Garfield) is a smart, cocky New York lawyer, and as corrupt as they come. "This is Wall Street," Joe tells us at the start of Force of Evil, "and today was important because tomorrow, July Fourth, I intended to make my first million dollars. An exciting day in any man's life. Temporarily, the enterprise was slightly illegal. You see, I was the lawyer for the numbers racket." Joe has a problem. His older brother, Leo (Thomas Gomez), runs a neighborhood numbers operation. Leo is a decent small-timer with a bad heart who worked his tail off so that Joe could go to law school. He knows his brother for what Joe is, a slick legal crook. Joe is in partnership with a tough gangster, Ben Tucker. They plan to break the banks of the small numbers operations, then move in and consolidate them under their own hand. They'll make millions. Joe realizes his brother will be ruined and tries to save him. Events begin to spin out of Joe's ability to control them. Joe finally finds a conscience, but only after people die.
There are a lot of elements that work in this movie. The screenplay by Abraham Polonsky and Ira Wolfert centers squarely on Joe's character and his dilemma. There's no let-up for Joe as his life of legal crime slides into real crime and tightens around him. The script is not exactly poetic, that would make it self-conscious, but it is tough, thoughtful and vivid. Polonsky's direction packs a lot of action into only 82 minutes. You need to pay attention, but it all makes sense. The movie looks gritty and bleak, from the crummy apartment where Leo runs his numbers operation to the empty New York streets at dawn to the sad but redemptive scene on the banks of the East River under the bridge. There are lots of low-angle shots that emphasize the essential emptiness of Joe's character. The movie also is well cast. Some of the actors I particularly enjoyed are Howland Chamberlain as a frightened, weak numbers accountant; Paul McVey as Joe's experienced law partner; Roy Roberts as Joe's business associate, Ben Tucker, a gangster who is more ruthless than Joe thought; and Marie Windsor in a small but memorable performance as Tucker's slow-talking, smoldering wife.
More than anything, the movie depends on the excellent performances of John Garfield and Thomas Gomez. Gomez has to play a sick, excitable, overweight small-time crook who has a bedrock decency. "The money I made in this rotten business is no good for me, Joe." he says. "I don't want it back. And Tucker's money is no good either." Joe just looks at him. "The money has no moral opinions," he tells Leo. Leo stares at his brother. "I find I have, Joe. I find I have." Gomez has to show his complete disdain for what his brother has become but still show us there's some strength left in the relationship. Garfield is the center of the movie. He was an actor who looked tough and sounded tough, yet he was able in his movies to show enough vulnerability not to alienate the audience. He not only had a lot of charm when he wanted to show it, he knew his craft and was good at it.
The movie also is resonant because we know what happened to Polonsky and Garfield as a result of the Communist witch hunts that overtook Hollywood during the late Forties and Fifties. Polonsky was an outspoken and enthusiastic Marxist. It's no accident that Force of Evil can be seen as a parable for Big Business squeezing out the hard-working little guys. When Polonsky refused to testify before the House un-American Activities Committee, his career vanished. He continued to write screenplays but only under assumed names. It took 21 years before he was permitted to direct another film. Garfield suffered perhaps a sadder fate. He came from a poor, working class background and had always been a strong supporter of the working man. He'd never been a Communist but he had supported liberal causes. Garfield was as politically naive as a deer who has a target tattooed on his side. He agreed to testify before HUAC but refused to offer any names of people the committee wanted to know were Communist sympathizers. He was unofficially blacklisted. He had become a major star in the Forties, but the job offers suddenly dried up. He made a couple of so-so movies, then tried to re-establish himself on Broadway. He was mystified and depressed at what was happening to him. He died of a heart attack in 1952 at 39.
The DVD transfer is just fine. There are no extras.
To be a classic is at times disappointing.......2006-06-28
A strange film if there is one. We know what is going to happen from the very start, maybe because it is a classic and it has been imitated so often. There is no suspense. The film concentrates on the feelings of the main characters when confronted with the various developments that they had not been able to foresee, though they are entirely responsible for them. The business is half crime, half business, since it is illegal business. But it is business all the same, even if it is gambling. There are some risks in this business, particularly the finks that manage the police into hassling you, the gangwar that can explode at any time when one biggy tries to bring another biggy down, and of course your family that can find itself in the pit, unprotected and endangered. Add a little bit of mishy-mashy sentimentalese schmaltz and you have it. There is no depth though in the film itself, not even any real question on the morality of this street gambling. It is just one vision of how violent society can be when dealing with money and that most of the time the people who are hassled and victimized, not to mention those who are the dead victims, are mostly the little ones because the big ones try to remain civilized and proper, though at times the order can be changed. Then one million dollars will not be won on that day but one quarter of a million is not bad at all, after all.

WHAT THE ....????.......2005-10-16
I have no idea why this movie is so highly regarded.Perhaps it is politics since Polonsky was blacklisted as a communist.I found it very hard to understand and quite boring(Go ahead communist sympathizers and call me stupid or vote " not helpful" !).To begin with Marie Windsor does not play brother Leo's secretary. This role is played, dreadfully,by Beatrice Pearson.Marie Windsor, played the very small part of gangster Tucker's wife.It would seem to me that the two reviewers that seemed to love this film so much would know this if they had actually watched it.Second, this movie is about numbers banking,if you're not an accountant you may not understand what the heck is going on for the first half of the movie. Finally, for the second half when the law and the gangsters are squeezing Garfield's character, the wall st. lawyer, ruining his career and causing the death of his brother leo,it is still terribly hard to understand and not at all entertaining.I'm sure many will dismiss my review as coming from someone that just doesn't understand Polonsky's genius and that I must prefer Bruce Willis movies. But I challenge anyone that wants to click "not helpful " to actually try to watch this movie first.

Customer Reviews:
My kids really enjoyed this.......2006-01-31
I am suprised by the previous review by "Mother of Three" who has never reviewed anything but 2 angel wars episodes, both of which she hated. Why did she bother buy two if she hated it so much? My two kids love this franchise, and i would be the first to call out something that seemed inappropriate. Granted my kids are a bit older than the Veggie Tales viewers; they are 8 and 10, and i was a little suprised it was a christian show the first time we watched it, partially because of the suprisingly good production, but when the moral lessons sparked talk about it in their youth group, the youth pastor asked me about it. After witnessing my kids' suprisingly mature discussions, i recognized that the show showed them that they themselved make a difference in a spiritual battle that goes own unseen by our mortal eyes every day - that our choices make a difference. While the messages are not overt, they are definitely there if you can read between the lines, as i believe it should be. My youngest loved it. I was glad to see they found something so positive that they actually found cool. We all can't wait to see episode 3. I had heard it was coming out this past fall, but i could not find it at Christmas in stores. I will keep my eyes peeled though.
Wow! Imaginative and Original........2005-09-01
I loved episode one, but episode two is even better. It picks up where the first episode left off and we get to see some of the other angels on their missions and in high action. I can't say enough how great this series is - totally imaginative and completely original, the stories are well thoughtout, the characters are fun and interesting, and the designs are unlike anything i've ever seen before (think angels with a futuristic anime twist). The action is awesome and the positive underlying themes are strong, but are not rammed down your throat. Both kids and adults will enjoy this, and the adults will especially appreciate the craft put into telling this story that both engages, entertains and pushes stong values. We need more shows like this, not the unoriginal and dirivative garbage that we see popping up everywhere. I loved this show, and you will too. I can't wait to see more! When is the movie!?!

The Force Of Evil Holds Us In Thrall!!!.......2004-07-07
Originally posted on www.MaximumMetal.com
Late last year the core founders of the band Mercyful Fate (Hank Shermann and Michael Denner) started a new Heavy Metal band called "The Force Of Evil". This CD has been already reviewed to high marks on the site and is being very well received in the metal world. How could it not, since it is essentially all members of Fate plus Hal Patino of King Diamond and newcomer Martin Steene of Ironfire.
Filmed in Stockholm in November 2003 one can see the band in its live infancy. I say this as it is filmed during the bands second performance ever, and one cannot tell that this is the case. The tunes are good and heavy and the production of the DVD is solid, clear, and not one instrument over powers any of the others. I especially liked how Steene sounds live, one is always concerned that the vocalist on the CD does not sound the same live. I also like his voice as it suits the material very well. However I was not 100% crazy about the way he sings the Mercyful Fate material but I think this is because I am too used to the way King Diamonds voice sounds on these numbers.
Bassist Hal Patino holds the bottom together while Drummer Bjarne Holm sitting at a very small drumkit plays the fills as if he were on a larger set. This was probably done in the interest of keeping it simple to ensure quality of the recording. Then there is Hank Shermann and Denner. Twin virtuousos playing with the same harmony and style that their fans have loved for years. I have often thought that Shermann was overlooked when it came to Metal Guitar God polls. Hopefully this will change some of that.
If you already own the self-titled CD, it will interest you to know that the entire CD is showcased here with the exception of "Under The Blade" (no, not the one by Twisted Sister). The DVD also comes with a full color booklet with a lot of pictures and some liner notes. I did enjoy this DVD, as its nice to see a quality piece come out to accompany a new band. My fave tracks on this would have to be "The Calling", "Mindbreaker", "Hell On Earth" and "Evil". I recommend this to any fans of Fate and Diamond material as well as those who are just looking to keep heavy music in the limelight and want to take a chance on a new band put together by the creators of some of the most influencial heavy metal of our time.
Song Listing (Main Concert):
1.The Calling
2.Demonized
3.Fountain Of Grace
4.Mindbreaker
5.Eye Of The Storm
6.Curse Of The Pharoahs
7.Eternity
8.Hell On Earth
9.Samhain
10.Death Comes Crawling
11.Evil
Bonus Features:
"Evil" and "Misery Man" filmed in Cleveland Metal Fest in 2003. It seems to be an amateur shot of these tunes. As result, the sound quality is better than the overall video on these numbers. Still, it is a plus to have footage from the bands very first venture to stage. Two interviews (which I found very interesting on the bands take on this new project). A very detailed biography as well as some stuff from the studio during the recording process of the CD.

Great to see Denner and Shermann on stage again........2004-06-06
I like this band a lot. I like Shermann and Denner even more. This DVD is great. You'd never know this was the band's second gig ever. They are nice and tight. The songs sound just like off their highly recommended debut album. They play two totally classic Mercyful Fate songs that just burn with guitar tone and style: 'Evil' and 'Curse Of The Pharaohs'. They also play a song('Death Comes Crawling') off their next album which promises to be as good or better than their first. The camera work is good, we get close ups of all the band members and also full satge shots. The sound is excellent, and you get the choice of stereo or 5.1 sound. The crowd is a little reserved but that just may be how Stockholmers act. The bonus material is good also: there's some footage of the boys in the studio, 2 songs from the BW&BK festival in Cleveland last year (good audio, poor video) but the best part is the two interviews with Shermann and Denner because rarely if ever does one get to hear what these two men think and what influences them.
Please get this DVD, you won't be disappointed.

a big pile of alien doo doo.......2005-05-21
an alien ship lands in a small Mexican town and The Interceptor Force, lead by chisled Oliver Gruner, are sent in to find out what's going on...soon, they lose a team member in the process of arriving and things get a little fishy when the boss, Brad Dourif decides to send a missle to blow up the town and get rid of any evidence. Gruner's team consists of actor Glenn Plummer (Speed 1 and 2, Salton Sea) and actress exPlayboy Playmate Angel Boris (hot but cant act worth crap). Gruner gets in trouble with the Mexican leader and his Mexican Mafia...they run around...they get taking over by the alien force, big fights, alien phaser guns shooting, Gruner running away from big explosion, town go boom and then Gruner get up, he get slapped by woman with purse and then years later they make even more stupid sequels (Interceptor Force 2 and Phantom Force (with 21 Jump Street heartthrob Richard Grieco) with even more stupid actors. Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters 1 and 2), why the hell did you sign up for this? A pile of alein poo
Crappiest film ever seen.......2004-12-20
This has definitely become my very favorite, toppling Deep Blue Sea from the top of my list of raspberry films. It is not only that the plot is anything but plausible - the acting is awful and the punch lines are out of line. Unlike other sci-fi spoofs, this movie has very few jokes that make it worth viewing.
Only the extras among the cast playing Mexicans look like such - and they don't speak a word in the whole movie.
**** SPOILERS AHEAD ****
In fact, the 'Mexican' girl admits to come from Sacramento at the end of the film, right before she chases Gruner across the desert. This scene and the effects of the atomic explosion make you laugh in desperation after 50 minutes of boring, pointless action.
After seeing this film, I still wonder who had been serving the drops (and why) to Gruner during the fight in the saloon, and if this was supposed to be a prank at all. I can understand the director's acknowledging his father's enduring patience in the credits.
Summarizing: If you have more than average sense of humor and mercy AND your friends are joining in, rent this film. You will enjoy ranting on about it.
Great FX but.............2000-07-20
There are some great set pieces in this film that make it worth seeing if you're into special effects. The first is a great dogfight between stealth bombers and an alien spaceship. Then there are the shoot outs with the alien and a nuclear explosion. The film is basically about a team who defend Earth against an alien species. Olivier Gruner leads the team and the excellent Brad Dourif is their commander. The problem with the film is that the action comes at the start and end of the film. The middle 40-50 minutes drag terribly making it an effort to watch in one sitting. The dialogue ranges from OK to pretty lame, as does the acting. Still, Dourif and Gruner are always watchable and Gruner has a great stunt at the start. It's a shame, but not a complete waste of time thanks to the effects.

Ever wondered what went on in the Terminator future?.......2002-02-25
In this direct sequal to the original GALL FORCE trilogy, the story has fast forwarded to the year 2085. The remains of the Solnoid probe sent thousands of years ago has been found and used to create a new type of cybernetic robot. But the machines have now taken over and nuked most of the human population. Aside from a colony on Mars, most of the people on earth have dies. Only handfuls of survivors fight to stay alive. The two warring factions of humans who originally created the robots unite in a joint effort to send thousands of refugees to the Martian colony. Leading them is Sarah McDougal whose father originally found the alien artifact with the lost technology. They succeed in their mission, but this is merely the prelude for their final fight with the robot army in the next series: GALL FORCE-EARTH CHAPTER. All of the characters from the original GALL FORCE movies are reincarnated witn new names. The animation is pretty good, but the best feature is Keichi(GUNSMITH CATS)Sodana's character designs. Although this was basicly a straight transfer of the RHEA GALL FORCE video on to DVD with no dubbed track or subtitle-free function, this is still a must for the average GALL FORCE fanatic.
Humanity battles robots in a post-apocalyptic Earth........1999-01-31
Set in post-apocalyptic Australia, the last remnants of humanity on Earth battle the MME, a robot race whose goal is the elimination of all human life. Sandy Neuman and the remaining Earth forces fight a delaying action to allow a massive evacuation to Mars. This Japanese anime is reminiscent of the scenes of the future from the movie "The Terminator." It has some brief cartoon nudity and is pretty violent. All-in-all, a great story well presented.

A flawed film with an inspiring message buried in it somewhere.......2005-09-01
This one of the best anime movies I've ever seen (even dubbed version).
In space a war rages between two races, the all female Solnoids and the biomechanical Paranoids. The story revolves around the crew of an ill-fated solnoid transport ship called star-leaf. With most of the crew dead the remaining 7 crew members must fight their way to the new solnoid homeworld Chaos...before their enemies get their first.
From the author of Tales of Ancient Xenar.......2004-05-14
I have been an anime lover for over 20 years. Now if my book were to be made into a movie, I'd definitely want it to be an anime. But enough of that.
Gall Force is my 4th most favorite anime of all (behind Fist of the North Star, Vampire Hunter D and Wicked City.) I first saw Gall Force on Sci Fi channel. I was very impressed with the story, its plot, its characterization and drama. This story is about an interplanetary battle of the sexes. Literally all of the people on the good side are women. They pilot a starship called the Star Leaf. I do not yet have this on video yet, but I plan to get it. I hope soon that parts 2 and 3 will be dubbed in english. I don't really like watching subtitled films.
Great movie.......2002-04-10
I thought that it was a great twist on the old Genesis story. So long as the taking of religious stories and telling them in a new way doesn't bug you, then watch this movie, even if you are not big into religion, it is a good movie anyways.
We Have Met the Extra-Terrestrials... and They are Us!.......2002-04-08
*
Taking the world's most universally recognized legend and putting a new twist on it, ''Gall Force: Eternal Story'' is an epic adventure that you don't soon forget and that you will want to watch again and again.
The story opens in the midst of a full-scale battle raging in the depths of outer space between two persistently warring races: the somewhat indescribable cyborg ''Paranoids'' and the all-female humanoid race called ''Solnoids'' (which raises the intriguing question of how they reproduce... but let's suspend logic for the moment).
The Paranoid/Solnoid wars have been waging for centuries, and diplomats on both sides have grown weary of the never-ending battle and have entered into a secret covenant where they have mutually devised a risky plan which they hope will act as a buffer between the two feuding races and hopefully bring both sides to the table to begin suing for peace. But in order for this mission to be successful, their joint activities must operate covertly and be kept a closely guarded secret from everyone on both sides -- especially from the military arms of the two warring factions, each of whom would stop at nothing and spare no effort to recover the ''experimental project'' for ''their'' side to exploit. The details of this ''Top Secret'' diplomatic gambit are entrusted to a single Solnoid who's been dispatched as a secret agent to infiltrate the ranks of a ship's crew to insure that the objective proceeds successfully without a hitch.
Forced to make the leap into lightspeed out of its surrounding blazing deathtrap, a sole Solnoid spaceship, the ''Star Leaf,'' has been targeted for the for the infiltration of both the Solnoid/Paranoid agent and the secret ''experiment.'' The Star Leaf's escape course is to a distant star system: Their destination is a 'new home world' -- a terra-formed planet moon the Solnoid have given the name ''Chaos.'' Chaos is the satellite companion to the planet ''Terra,'' which the Solnoid refer to as ''the planet that lives on its own'' (which raises another question of logic ... ''Why not just inhabit Terra from the very beginning?'' -- but again, let's try to overlook this notable flaw in the story).
In their hasty attempt at escape from all of the senseless slaughter taking place around them, the crew of the Star Leaf must constantly deal with numerous emerging deadly threats, from pursuing warships, equipment malfunctions, the real possibility of mutually assured destruction, and the presence of a sinister looking alien life form which stalks the remaining crew throughout their space vessel. The surviving members of the Star Leaf's crew must also try to understand the meaning and significance of a bizarre precognitive dream they all share involving a mysterious Solnoid-like alien creature which could either be a Paranoid brainwashing and mind-controlling ploy or the key to ending the hostilities between the Paranoid and Solnoid races.
The moon Chaos becomes the final battleground in the Paranoid/Solnoid war as deception, treachery, and the lust for power and military advantage overtake reason, diplomacy and visions of unconditional peace.
Much more enjoyable in the 'English dubbed' version (which is something of a rare experience in anime DVDs), ''Gall Force: Eternal Story'' often catches you off your guard with where you think the story is going to take you and, in a manner much like in the ''SCREAM'' movies, messes with your head as it relates to who lives, who dies, and who the ''bad guys'' are.
A bit more attention to detail could (should) have been paid to the animation itself, in my opinion, and a few things about the story could have been smoothed out as well (but hey... this IS ''Japanese Animation,'' after all), but apart from this feature film's only real problem of the 'fingernails-on-chalkboard' screeching of the original Japanese voice actors, this movie does not fail to deliver: It hooks you right away and reels you all the way in from the opening scene to the emotionally charged climatic ending. Don't push past this one.

Gall Force : Eternal Classic.......2002-03-08
THIS MOVIE IS GOOD! The plot may be very confusing in the end,but I don't care. I have watched this movie a good few times and I have never got tired of it.
It certainly does deserve 5 stars!
