Gamers, grannies and stoners unite! From Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions comes a raucously funny, "fish-out-of bongwater comedy" (Playboy) that'll have you rolling with laughter! Life is sweet for 35-year-old video game tester Alex (Allen Covert), until he's forced to move in with his overbearing grandmother Lilly (Doris Roberts) and her two roommates: oversexed Grace (Shirley Jones) and overmedicated Bea (Shirley Knight). To save face with his much younger co-workers and super-sexy new boss (Linda Cardellini), Alex brags about the "three hot babes" living with him, but soon that cat's out of the bag?and the real party at Grandma's house has just begun! If you love footie pajamas, techno-talk and karate-chopping chimps (and who doesn't?), grab your buds and watch Grandma's Boy!

Grow a funny bone, why don't you?.......2007-06-12
This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. All the actors/actresses play an integral part in this movie. I guess that some people can't think "outside the box". Not every movie has to make sense or have a solid plot to be good or funny. Sometimes stupid humor works, and this is one of those occasions.
Funny as Hell !!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-29
I watched this movie on HBO so I had to add it to my collection. The unrated movie is even better. I give it two Thumbs up :)
Love this movie.......2007-05-16
This movie is so funny and if you don't like it you need to get some life into you
Grandmas Boy.......2007-05-14

Hilarious!!.......2007-05-11
If you love "Super Troopers", "Beerfest", "Road Trip" stc... you will LOVE this movie! It's so funny, and so stupid (in a good way)! Definitely watch with creator commentary on... good times!

Sydney Pollack's 1985 multiple-Oscar winner is a sumptuous and emotionally satisfying film about the life of Danish writer Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep), better known as Isak Dinesen, who travels to Kenya to be with her German husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) but falls for an English adventurer (Robert Redford). The film is slow in developing the relationship, but it is rich in beautiful images of Africa and in the romantic tone surrounding Blixen's gradual discovery of her life and voice. One downside: while we may all love Redford, he is as convincingly British as Kevin Costner is in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. --Tom Keogh
Description
The most acclaimed motion picture of 1985 stars Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in one of the screen's great epic romances. Directed by Oscar winner Sydney Pollack, Out of Africa is the fascinating true story of Karen Blixen, a strong-willed woman who, with her philandering husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer), runs a coffee plantation in Kenya, circa 1914. To her astonishment, she soon discovers herself falling in love with the land, its people and a mysterious white hunter (Redford). The masterfully crafted, breathtakingly produced story of love and loss earned Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay (based on material from another medium), Cinematography, Original Score, Art Direction (Set Decoration) and Sound.
Customer Reviews:
Still My All-Time Favorite!.......2007-07-04
This true story's appeal is for all generations.A movie that intrigues and captivates as it tells of courage and perseverance while maintaining a tension of romance throughout. It is made of everything a great story should be.Meryl Streep and Robert Redford are the perfect actors for these roles.Immerse yourself!
A Favorite Film.......2007-06-09
This is one of my two favorite films of all time. The sweep and grandeur, along with the beautiful human elements makes this film a keeper!
Classic.......2007-06-08
This is one of the great classic films with wonderful actors, beautiful story and great photography. Love It
It Moved Me........2007-06-05
A masterpiece of cinematic beauty. This film is based on Danish writer Karen Blixen's(Isak Dinesen)years in Africa. One of the great performances of Meryl Streep, in a career of many great performances.
The story of a strong, yet very sensitive woman who follows her husband to Kenya to start a Coffee Plantation. His philandering ways soon leaves her with syphilis. Of course their relationship ends, and she is romanced by the Brit' Denys Finch Hatton, played by Robert Redford minus an ascent. One of the few often heard complaints during the film's release. But their chemistry still makes for one of the great screen romances ever.
1985's Best Motion Picture Academy Award winner, a year that saw many superb films. One of my other favorites that year was "The Color Purple", either one of which was worthy of the award in my book. Sydney Pollack also received the Best Director Academy Award for some of his most ingenius work. One of the most beautifully photographed films is magnificently transferred to DVD, though if you've never seen it on the big screen don't miss the opportunity should it ever arise. And John Barry's musical score makes for an even more breathtaking experience.
Some of Barry's Best Work.......2007-05-11
Everything it seems, has been said about this gorgeous film, except perhaps about the sound track. John Barry's work is outstanding and seems to enhance the move at its most powerful moments. The lasting impression I have more than two decades after the movie is the "Flight over Africa," when Denys takes his love up for a flight in his plane. I could watch - and listen - a million times and be enthralled every time.

You wouldn't think a movie that uses the game of golf as a metaphor for class struggle could be so entertaining. The Greatest Game Ever Played stars the charming Shia LaBeouf (Holes) as Francis Ouimet, a golfer who, in 1913, rose from caddy to U.S. Open champion at the age of 20--despite the resistance of the powers that be, who thought it unseemly for a lower-class plebian to play the sport of gentlemen. Ouimet's main competitor is Harry Vardon (Stephen Dillane, The Hours), a British professional, still considered one of the greatest players of all time, who fought his own class battles. The two go head to head in a genuinely gripping match, deftly balanced against the juxtapositions of their personal struggles. Is it sentimental and formulaic? Is the outcome a foregone conclusion? Yes, but it doesn't matter--formulas exist because, when executed with verve and dexterity, they work. Bill Paxton, best known as an actor (One False Move, Apollo 13), steps into the director's chair and hits all the right notes, aided by an excellent cast playing colorful characters, a vivid recreation of the time period, glowing cinematography, and an expert pace. The Greatest Game Ever Played works. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:
Somewhat Boring Family Movie.......2007-06-26
The Greatest Game Ever Played is a decent family movie that is extremely predictable and has a feel good ending. It had a good history of the U.S. Open and being a golf fan I learned some things about the sport's history.
I was bothered by the fact that I could constantly predict what would happen and was waiting for that warm fuzzy feeling that I received in a similar genre like Remember The Titans or A league of Their Own. It was not what I would consider a sports classic but I am sure that kids will enjoy watching the young man beat up on the older folks in the tournament. The story has the usual theme of one parent not believing in the child while the other is a great supporter until the end. The acting just wasn't believable.
I wouldn't highly recommend the movie but I guess if there is nothing else to watch then it is a decent choice
If you "Don't love" golf this is for you.......2007-06-25
Whether you love golf or do not love golf, this movie is a classic.
This movie is the perfect gift for anyone from 8 to 88.
The theme is wonderful.
The photography is wonderful.
The acting is wonderful.
The whole family will love this movie - I Guarantee!
The Greatest Game Ever Played.......2007-06-11
A truly inspiring movie...I want to become a golfer now!
Gentleman's Game.......2007-06-09
Epitome of the nature of the game - sportsmanship. Gentle movie dealing with the competition between two lowly-born men who were true gentlemen. I love this movie as I love the game.
The Greatest Game Ever Played.......2007-05-24
This is a great family movie about a little piece of ground breaking golf history. It is a true story about a young caddy who wins the U.S. Open in the early 1900's, and it is such and interesting story that it would appeal to both old and young viewers. My family watches this movie every time it's on so we bought it. We also bought the book that it is based on.

Val Kilmer stars as Lt. Col. John Patterson, a 19th-century Irish engineer drafted by Britain's railroad bosses to build a trestle bridge over an African river, thus expanding the empire a tiny bit more. In Tsavo, Patterson is instantly hailed for killing a man-eating lion that had been making life hell for native workers. But morale sinks when a pair of unstoppable big cats devour more men and destroy the project. Along comes an Ahab-like, expatriate American hunter (Michael Douglas) to help Patterson face the almost preternatural powers of the two killers. The script by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) is based on fact, though the film owes more to Spielberg (specifically to Jaws) than history. There are also suggestive echoes of Kipling and Conrad in the material and characters, and there are hints of emotional complexity and psychological nuance that make one wish this could have been a great film instead of a merely fun one. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Lions DO NOT sleep at night!!!.......2007-06-29
Saw this movie from Netflix and have now decided to buy it. I've just returned from a safari to Namibia where we heard the lions roaring in the night not far from our camp. NOTHING puts the fear of God into you more than that, all that separates you from them is your puny canvas tent. Our safari guide had seen the movie as well and we talked about it that night around the fire. He is himself a lion tracker in that if his family ranch is threatened by a lion, they do track it down. When Kilmer and Douglas are sitting at night listening to the lion still roaring and laugh about it, you just know that something more is going to happen. And boy does it ever!!! The music soundtrack is great, I especially like the interaction between Kilmer and the guy who played Shaka Zulu in the mini series. ALso the innocent Scottish missionary's part is rather poignant. I don't care if it is hokey, or a typical Hollywood production, the story IS real, the lions ARE on display in the Field museum in Chicago and it evokes the feel of the African savannah perfectly.
great.......2007-06-16
Movie was great. I would highly recommend this for any movie waycher.
The Man-eaters (lions) of Tsavo...thrilling movie.......2007-04-28
I was merely 12 years old way back in 1950s when I first read the book: The Man-Eaters of Tsavo by Lt.Colonel J.H. Patterson, DSO. Later in life, I wished this book could be made into a movie, and my dream really came true when I purchased the DVD. This movie is based entirely on the book by English railway bridge builder, John Patterson.
Ironically, the pair of male lions as depicted in the movie was borrowed from a zoo farm in Alberta, Canada. These lions were fully mane. But in the book, John Patterson described those two lions as lean and maneless...! As factually, most lions in Tsavo of Kenya don't have the beautiful mane unlike their cousins in other parts of Africa. This is unusual, maneless male lions because only females don't spot a mane. The movie will keep you on the edge of your chair from the beginning to the end - never a dull moment. I consider this as the best thrilling movie ever made in the wilds of Africa, especially at this time when the public is conscious about nature conservation. Too bad that when the movie was made in early 1900s, surround sound was not a popular feature and therefore not included, otherwise the roars of these two persistent man-eaters in the dead of the African night would be very nighmarish in our den when we watch the movie...! Yes, these two lions did chomp more than a hundred railway workers that at one stage they were compelled to quit until the pair was finally hunted down. John finally skinned the two man-eating lions and sold their skins and bones to the field museum at Springfield, Illioness. This pair of mounted, maneless notorious man-eating lions are still there for everyone to see and contemplate.
This classic movie depicting a strange aspect of yesterday-Africa is historically true and thus highly recommended. So go for it while it is still available. Cheers...!
Kilmers best.......2007-04-14
This movie is a very good movie. One of Val Kilmers best not to mention it is based on a true story. About two man eating lions of course there is some blood so don't let little kids watch this. A very suspensfull film a lot of good action and it is not slow either
BEFORE DAKTARI.......2007-04-13
William Goldman, the screenwriter of THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS is a novelist who also writes for Hollywood for more than 40 years now. His most known original screenplays are those of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Special Edition), Marathon Man and Maverick. When you see the name of William Goldman on the list of credits of a film, you know for sure that there will be more in the movie than meets the eye.
Now, when I read here reviews that destroy the GHOST AND THE DARKNESS by pointing out that the lions in the film don't act like real lions, I feel sad and sorry for these reviewers. It's like hating a Picasso painting because the faces of its characters are misshappen. The characters or events pictured in a fiction movie have a life of their own that should convey the artistic vision of the director or the screenwriter. If the lions don't act like in a documentary film, it's simply because the authors of the film wanted them to be larger than life.
THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS is one of the best adventure movies I've seen in a long time. Lavishly photographed by the multi-awarded Vilmos Zsigmond, with an effective musical score by Jerry Goldsmith, the film shows the duel that opposes two highly symbolic couples. This duel quickly overshadows the subplots such as the difficulties to build a bridge in the African savanna or to maintain order in a multiethnic team. Two solitary lions, without any links with a herd, fight two men, away from their family or, for Charles Remington, without any family at all. And now you can try to figure out what the movie is really about : is it a film about the couple civilization/nature or a film dealing with some of our most ancestral fears ? or is it even about something else ? If a film can raise such questions, it surely deserves a little consideration.
A DVD for your library.

Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) is having a bad day. His girlfriend Jane (Kelly Preston, stunning as ever) says she's leaving, and his boss (Brian Cox) says he's selling the business and ace employee Billy may be out of job. Sounds like business as usual for an old-fashioned veteran. However, the business is baseball and for Billy Chapel, the 40-year old former all-star for the Detroit Tigers, it means his career--and his life--is at a crossroads.
Although it is no Bull Durham, For Love of the Game finds a solid and very believable role for Costner. The film is based on Michael Shaara's (The Killer Angels) stream-of-consciousness novel (the rough manuscript was found after his death 1988). The entire film takes place on Billy's day on the mound against the Yankees, a meaningless late-season game for the Tigers, but everything for Billy. In flashbacks, he lingers over his long relationship with Jane and his baseball career (from World Series heroism to a career-threatening injury). His one viable link to the game at hand is his catcher, played winningly by John C. Reilly. Costner, like Chapel, is looking for one more great performance, but the film is too simplistic and loopy at times to resonate. The love story has an extra helping of cuteness, and legendary baseball announcer Vin Scully nearly takes on a leading role, waxing grandiloquent. It's no grand slam, but a solid double. --Doug Thomas

"You and Me...One more time!".......2007-05-08
Those were the words of "Gus", John C. Riley(the more i see of this guy the more i like him)is the big hearted, battle worn,FAITHFUL,TRUSTY O'l catcher in this baseball guy movie turned LOVE STORY. This is the story of Billy Chapel. A once great pitcher for the Detroit Tigers on the brink of retirement. It's a story of a man who's got the biggest decision of his life/career to make...being traded by the new owners of the ball club and keep playing but for another team other than the only team he has ever known Professionally...or retirement?...If you're a use to be athlete...this tugs at your heart, taking you back to the last time you were able to suit up and play the greatest game in the world...baseball! Billy is a man who's obviously in love with the game and is having a heck of a time letting her go. Now by using the word "her'...i can describe both the game of baseball and Billy's "on again, off again" relationship with Jane Aubrey(the very Beautiful Kelly Preston), a New York Fashion magazine Editor who's more than a lil' hesitant with Costner's character's old school approach with their realtionship. Billy thinks (like i and countless other guys have) like a typical guy who takes advantage of a good thing to the point that he drives it away. Billy is old school and he isn't willing to commit to Jane, which she deperately needs him to do. Jane has been done wrong in the past more than a few times. She's a single mom of a teenage girl( played by the very CUTE Jena Malone)who's starting to challenge her mom's ways. In all ways this movie is just about life! Single parenting, being a stubborn man, relationships with friends, saying goodbye, the love of a good woman... and o'h yeah...the deepest love a man can have for the game of Baseball. The movie is set during the last game of what has been a very rough season for Billy and the Tigers. Inning by inning Billy goes through refections of his relationship with Jane and Heather(Jena's character), his career as a dominant pitching god for one team, the Detroit Tigers & everything from a career threatning injury and just plain old woman trouble. He's had a good life as a ball player but his career is coming to a close and now he has the decision of retirement or playing for another team. All the while his heart is with Jane but he is too stubborn to tell her how he really feels and just about pushes her completely away. Like a typical guy, Billy realizes and goes after her at all costs...Did i forget to mention the fact that this is all going on during a game that Billy just so happens to be pitching a perfect game in?...news of the sale of the Tigers forces Billy's hand to make a decision of retirement or trade...this triggers Billy's reflections. He realizes that's he's in love with Jane and he needs more than just "the game" to be complete in life. In typical Movie fashion Billy pitches the perfect game, retires, and goes after Jane. In the ending scene,Billy pours his heart to Jane at the airport in New York...he palns to chase her overseas but by chance she delays her flight to watch the game and is wrestling with her own feelings for Billy and trusting him. All in all, this is a great movie especially for the Costner buffs out there. I personally love all of Costner's baseball movies and i'd put this one at the top of my personal list! This is not a movie to rent, it's a definate buy!!! Billy Chapel is the man everybody wants to be and the man that no man wants to admit that he is...?!
Baseball: Metaphor for life.......2007-04-24
This movie wasn't really at all about baseball, but about the metaphor for life baseball is. Overall if you are looking for a film that is going to capture what baseball represents, then this is it!
Why it is called "America's Favorite Pasttime".......2007-03-28
Whether you love baseball or not, if you love a good movie, you will love this one. It is told in a unique and clever use of present time and flashback. Kevin Costner, what can I say? He had to be a ball player in another life. John C. Reilly looked as natural as a catcher on the diamond as he did on the stage as a song and dance man in "Chicago". Kelly Preston, my first time seeing her left me breathless. A superb job. Maybe I'm prejudiced because I do love baseball, but so will you after this. And you too may learn to hate the Yankee's fans.
one of the best.......2007-02-20
one of the best baseball DVD's out.....Follows the life of a washed up pitcher, as he flirts with immortality.....I recommend to any baseball fan
Nice date night movie!.......2007-01-31
Add one part love story and one part baseball sports flick and you have a great date night movie! This is a wonderful movie to watch. Kelly Preston and Kevin Costner do really great jobs of playing their roles in this movie, but more importantly the storyline is really well done. Costner plays an aging professional pitcher at the end of his career. On the last game he pitches, we see not only what is going on in his mind as a professional pitcher, but also flashbacks of his career over the years and his on again/off again romantic relationship with Preston's character. Definitely worth watching

The first Saw picture actually had an idea behind it, to say nothing of the ingenuity of its low-budget production; making a silk purse out of a bloody, maggot-ridden human ear, as it were. With Saw III, the franchise pretty much settles into gore for gore's sake, as it explores newer and better ways to traumatize the body--and the audience. Events from Saw II are sewn up at the beginning of the film, and a detective on the trail of mad killer Jigsaw is quickly trussed up and subjected to one of the villain's sadistic games (this one has escape possible only by means of a key sitting in the bottom of a beaker of acid). Then we catch up with Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) himself, as he awaits death from his debilitating illness; once again he's tended by helper Shawnee Smith. The movie follows parallel plots: Jigsaw blackmails a doctor (Bahar Soomekh) into keeping him alive, and tortures a vengeful soul (Angus Macfayden) into recognizing the futility of revenge. Original Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell worked on the script of this one, and it fully buys into the series mythology, referring backwards to previous events and, for all we know, preparing us for future installments. But if future installments are as pointlessly repugnant as this one, there's not much to look forward to. --Robert Horton
Description
Jigsaw has disappeared. With his new apprentice Amanda (Shawnee Smith), the puppet-master behind the cruel, intricate games that have terrified a community and baffled police has once again eluded capture and vanished. While city detectives scramble to locate him, Doctor Lynn Denlon (Bahar Soomekh) and Jeff (Angus Macfadyen) are unaware that they are about to become the latest pawns on his vicious chessboard
Customer Reviews:
A Truly Lousy, Mean-Spirited Sequel.......2007-06-22
What was great about the original Saw, was that there was a great twist ending and the gore was hinted at, not really graphic, leaving the viewer to conjure up the worst in their imagination. This was a similar tactic used in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, what was not seen seemed so much worse. With Saw 2, things took a little more graphic turn, there was still a nice twist ending, and the story wasn't as heavy handed, there was a "fun" element to the story. Saw 3 cranks up the gore, and slaps the viewer with a heavy, very melancholy storyline. Saw 3 is so depressive, there is really no one to cheer for, you really don't care who lives or dies as there is really no character development, and the two new main characters/victims are so unlikable you begin to lose interest. While I agree Saw 3 wraps up loose ends from Saw 2, it ends up presenting so many new questions that it doesn't feel like a complete film. Now you will have to see part 4 when it comes out to see how the storyline of part 3 wraps up. I don't care any longer, I am done playing Jigsaw's game. Unless your idea of entertainment is seeing broken bones being pushed through the skin, or toolbox brain surgery, stay away from this bloody mess of a film.
Saw III-The last Saw?.......2007-06-21
If you saw the first and second Saw, you'll be pleased with Saw III. Some may think that this particular film isn't as good as the original, but it still stands on its own.
So what's this movie about? If you've seen the original and the second Saw (and if you haven't, I suggest you do), you know what the basic storyline is about. I fear that no matter what I say, I'll be giving away spoilers so all I'll say is that Jigsaw is ill and a doctor is kidnapped to help him. The goal of her "game" is to keep Jigsaw alive. If he dies, she dies. Meanwhile, another man must go through a series of games and his ultimate goal is to forgive the man who killed his son.
So what's to like about this film? First, we have some of the same characters from the original and sequel. We have Shawnee Smith as well as more in depth appearances by Leigh Whannell (obviously only flashbacks). Of course we also have Tobin Bell, who plays Jigsaw. Second, those who love the traps will shriek in delight with the traps in this particular film. I actually had to turn my head during a couple of them because they were too painful (pun intended) to watch. Third, the storyline in this particular film is more in depth and emotional than the first two. Rather than just having people playing Jigsaw's "games" (although there are an abundance of those as well), there's a real (and personal) reasoning behind Jigsaw's antics.
And what's not to like? You should definitely watch the original and the second Saw before checking this one out. This film won't make sense if you haven't seen the two previous Saws. Second, one thing that sort of irritated me was how the writers attempted to make Amanda as sad as possible. That in itself isn't irritating however the writers had her continually saying and doing a lot of things to further prove the point that she was not happy with her life. Other than that, this movie is great.
If you've seen and liked the first two Saws, be sure to add this one to your collection. I fear that this may be the last movie in the Saw series.
All the pieces of the puzzle come together............2007-06-20
All I gotta say is that the Saw franchise continues to impress me. I mean, Tobin Bell can do no wrong as Jigsaw the killer!!! He is truly an amazing actor. Now as for the storyline, it is a simple yet very intense one. Jigsaw and Amanda have set up another twisted game for two people. One is a female doctor who is having an affair on her husband and the other is a man who hasn't come to terms with the death of his young son. Who was the victim of a car accident at the hands of a drunk driver. But the two of them will have to figure out their connection to one another, to survive Jigsaw's game and to make matters worse. Jigsaw may not have that long to live, as he too must fight to stay alive long enough to finish is his dangerous game.
Saw III.......2007-05-29
I thought this was the best out of all the Saw Movies, I personally thought this movie was more detailed and kept me on the edge of my seat. Usually, with most movies after the first one, the remaining movies go down hill, not this one.
Its all downhill from here........2007-05-29
Have you ever seen a sequel that was as good as the original? Certainly not. This time is no different. Saw I was decent. Saw II was an insult. Saw III was zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ... a snoozer ...

Description
From Kevin Smith, the acclaimed director of Clerks, comes this outrageous story of two loafers, Jeremy London (The Babysitter) and Jason Lee (Kissing a Fool), who spend way too much time hanging out at the mall. When Brodie (Lee) is dumped by his girlfriend, Shannen Doherty (Heathers, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun), he retreats to the mall with his best friend T.S. (London), whose girlfriend has also left him. Between brooding and visits to the food court, the unmotivated twosome decide to win their girlfriends back with the help of the ultimate delinquents, Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) and Jay (Jason Mewes), whose continuing adventures take the word "nuisance" to a whole new level.

Howard Hawks's 1962 adventure-comedy is basically the same, loosely plotted movie Hawks made over and over again for decades. A collection of professionals with a common goal--in this case, animal trapping in Tanganyika--forms a pocket community and holds each other to high standards in their work. This is a film about camaraderie, crisp banter, romance, and exciting action (the animal sequences are great). John Wayne played this part in about a thousand ways for Hawks over the years, and he could not be more entertaining as a grizzled pro. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Long, but lots of fun.......2007-07-05
Hatari is a classic movie setting cowboy John Wayne in the wilds of safari land. Especially delightful for those who love animals.
Hatari!.......2007-06-27
Good-natured, leisurely Hawks-Wayne outing features gorgeous on-location shooting, with exciting footage of wild animal chases (the crew races after them in a jeep with nets), and effective ensemble playing from Cabot, Red Buttons, and Hardy Kruger, who comprise Mercer's core team. Martinelli is more than just ornamental as Dallas- we can well understand how she might get under Sean's supposedly thick skin. Catchy, distinctive Mancini score completes this exuberant, diverting picture, ideal for all ages.
More of the Duke doing what he does best.......2007-06-08
Hatari is one of those unexpected pleasures you find on basic cable. I first saw this movie on a local channel one Saturday afternoon. I only watched because it had the Duke in it. What I took from the movie was a fast-paced adventure which didn't minimize toughness, but didn't emphasize violence. A great deal of adeventure movies features violence and gore, not just plain, sturdy toughness. This movie features manly toughness without any embellishment or crudeness. Just a bunch of confident guys getting a tough job done without complaint. The plot is light, but not far fetched. The plot focuses simply on people doing their job (a job that is enjoyable) while interacting with one another. The movie doesn't need to go further than that because it is entertaining and enjoyable. Bit of trivia - Wayne and the others caught the animals themselves. Look at Wayne's mouth during the catch sequences; they are obviously dubbed over because Wayne cursed too much at the animals. Anyway watch this movie, it's a real treat!!!!
Hawks just hanging out with the boys.......2007-05-08
Hatari! is Howard Hawks at his most laid back. Thankfully not as shrill and manic as his Thirties screwball comedies, this veers totally in the opposite direction with its ambling, almost low-key and virtually plotless look at a group of animal catchers in East Africa who embody all the usual Hawksian stereotypes - likeably gruff but not humourless hero (Wayne), quiet punk kid who makes good (Gerard Blain), professional sidekick (Hardy Kruger), obligatory comic relief (Red Buttons) and game gal (Elsa Martinelliu). It in no way justifies its 157-minute running time, but all the reason Hawks needs is that he likes these people and wants to spend more time with them. Gently entertaining, but at times a little too laid back.
Paramount's DVD offers a good transfer with the original theatrical trailer the only extra.
An African "Western".......2007-04-10
Hatari means danger in Swahili. And so it is. A group of animal-catchers, operating from fast-moving trucks, capture wild animals using rope (no tranquilizers!). The animals frequently attack the trucks, for which the trucks are protected with old tires mounted on their sides. Attempts to corral a rhino lead to one of the men being severely gored. A tourniquet does not stem the loss of blood, and the man is near death. In the end, it takes a blood transfusion to save the man's life, followed by days of recovery.
There are scenes showing the capture of giraffes, wildebeest, and other animals. Natives help in the roundup of escaped ostriches. A woman raises one, two, and then three unweaned baby elephants. These are fed goats' milk, which turns out to be not so simple to get from the goats! In time, the woman leaves the group unannounced, and attempts to return to Europe. Her baby elephants sniff her out when she doesn't want to be found, enabling the others to locate her.
Throughout this flick, John Wayne is his typical self. He engages in blustery talk to others, including women. Diplomacy is not exactly his forte--but then who would expect the Duke to be diplomatic? And, as one would expect in a western, there are fistfights.
There are funny scenes in the film as well, as when a man builds rockets to be fired in order to scare monkeys into going up a tree. In the end, ironically, he is the most scared of all when one of his rockets is launched. He cannot even bear to look at it from a distance!

The adventures of pint-sized secret agents Juni and Carmen Cortes (Daryl Sabara and Alexa Vega) continue. As Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over opens, Juni has left the spy agency and launched a career as a private detective--but when he learns that his sister Carmen has disappeared into a nefarious multi-user computer game, he agrees to go in after her, with the assistance of his grandfather (Ricardo Montalban). Three-dimensional special effects launch us into a topsy-turvy world of battling robots, souped-up motorcycle races, frogs on pogo sticks, surfing on hot lava, and much, much more. The story is even more incoherent than an actual computer game--but the movie storms along, driven by writer/director/editor/everything-else Robert Rodriguez's sheer visual enthusiasm. Featuring Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, and everyone else who appeared in the first two Spy Kids movies. --Bret Fetzer

best kids action movie ever!.......2007-03-07
This has got to be the best kids action movie ever! I rented this movie
for a week and watched it 5 times and loved it. Believe me when you see this you are going to want to buy this like me! I have seen every one
except spy kids 2 {Island of Lost Dreams}. The basic outline of Spy Kids
Game Over is Carmon Cortez {Alexa Vega} gets stuck in a virtual reality
game trying to turn it off {to find out why you will need to watch it} and
Juni Cortez {Daryl Sabara} Must fight his way through the levels to save his sister and shut down the game at the same time. If he fails his mission,GAME OVER! I hope you will enjoy the dvd like I did!
Spy Kids 3.......2007-02-07

The Heart of the Game is, simply put, one of the most enjoyable and joyous documentaries ever made. For several years, the movie follows a girls' basketball team called the Rough Riders from a Seattle high school as they strive to win the state championship, and in the process discovers heart-wrenching twists of fate, vivid and compelling characters, colorful dialogue, and a nail-biting conclusion. The Heart of the Game starts with Bill Resler, a professor of tax law who agrees to become the head coach for the girls' basketball program at Roosevelt High School. He swiftly challenges the players with demanding drills and wild metaphors (each year he picks a different theme for the team, from "pack of wolves" to "tropical storm")--and the girls take him on, pulling together into a potent team. But when a girl from a poor neighborhood named Darnellia Russell joins the Rough Riders, her skill takes their fortunes even higher--until she unexpectedly has to quit. From there, the movie takes more and more compelling turns, carried along by the winning personalities of Bill and Darnellia. The Heart of the Game, like Hoop Dreams, works first as an exhilarating sports movie, but has a rich human story that will make it fascinating to people who don't care about basketball. First-time filmmaker Ward Serrill lucked out with the material, but he clearly labored to shape what must have been thousands of hours of footage into a taut, headlong movie. His labor paid off. See this movie. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Go courtside for a true-life rush like no other in this passionate and inspirational documentary in the same powerful tradition as HOOP DREAMS. Director Ward Serrill brings the camera up close and personal to capture the Roosevelt Roughriders girls' basketball team during six turbulent seasons, taking us far beyond the court. You'll meet Bill Resler, the tax professor turned hard-driving unorthodox coach who turns the team around and Darnellia Russell, the talented inner-city tough girl who battles off-court threats to regain eligibility. You'll meet a real team full of drive, toughness and the unbridled desire to make history.

To win- get a great coach.......2007-06-06
The kids are great, the coaches better. If you love the game, this is for you.
Shown in Russia.......2007-05-13
We showed this film among a group of our Russian friends to help them understand high school sports, and they enjoyed it. I'm not much of a basketball fan myself, but I was totally drawn into this story which is more than about girls basketball. I'm very happy that this documentary has enriched the perspectives of many who do not have the opportunity to experience this first-hand.
All Net.......2007-05-08
A superb sports documentary with multiple foci.... a unique coach, girls athletics, race relations, class clashes. Very well done and thoroughly enjoyed by my coaches and students. Tells it with impeccable truth through the lens of reality. Watch it, Enjoy it and share it with folks who love athletics.
Heart of the Girls.......2007-04-22
There are two story lines here, one an unqualified celebration of the state of girls' prep sports after a generation of Title IX's beneficial impact, and another the very qualified consideration of the state of some individual girls' athletic lives after a generation of Title IX's less beneficial side-effects. Heartbreak, fury, exultation are the viewer's rewards. Only quibble is that the climactic game was documented in too abbreviated a manner.
Great movie.......2007-04-16
I saw this film when it was in limited release during the summer of 2006. I loved it then. Well worth owning for the additional footage of an amazing team and coach!
