5 out of 5 stars A classic serial to definitely get.......2006-08-06

This is a classic serial set in the same style as Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. Definitely get it.

4 out of 5 stars The role that made Gene Autry!.......2006-06-02

"Phantom Empire" is a very cool concept all around. Half singing cowboy western and half extravagant (by standards of the day) sci-fi epic, it succesfully combined the best of two genres for maximum effect. Though young here, Autry is the same as in all his later movies: engaging and steady, acting just well enough to sell his character. The writing definitely slants toward youth here, but at the same time, it's internally consitent and not insulting to the intelligence of older viewers. Indeed, anyone in the mid-thirties should have been absolutely blown away by the scale of the story and the sheer number of unprecedented twists in the story. What a fine job all around. As an aside, the technology of the underground kingdom successfully predicts, among other things, guided cruise missiles and wireless phones! Looking for little things like that just adds to the fun!

The transfer is neither great nor terrible. Indeed, the picture is probably above average for such an old film, but the sound is disappointingly hit-or-miss. Even if a digital restoration of the film was cost-prohibitive, just balancing out the sound would have vastly improved the DVD quality at a very low cost (any home sound equipment tinkerer could have done it). For that, I deduct one star.

    2 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor.......2005-08-23

There is also a two-tape VHS set of this serial put out by Passport Video, which is apparently a copy of the inferior DVD that has gotten such bad reviews here. Do not confuse this with the excellent VCI VHS set.

3 out of 5 stars DVD set 2 stars lousey xfer - VHS set 4 stars good copy!!!.......2004-04-06

This review is strickly comparing this newly released 2 DVD set from ALPHA VIDEO to the 2 VHS set from VCI Home Video.

First "The Phantom Empire" (1935) starring Gene Autry the singing cowboy was the first Western/Sci-fi Saturday matinee action serial. A very elaborate and fun story of an underground hidden empire of "Murania" lying 12000 feet below Gene Autry's ranch. This is some fun stuff. 12 cliffhanging chapters originally produced by Mascot Pictures. This preceded the later serials like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. The Phantom Empire runs for 216 minutes total is Black and White and is presented in Standard Format.

    Compared:

Alpha Video 2 DVD set - This is a non-restored direct transfer DVD. The results are horrible, grainy, dark and some times blurry picture. The sound is erractic and sometimes difficult to understand the dialog. The worst thing is the chapters are incomplete. Each serial ending or beginning are chopped resulting in the absense of the cliffhanger thrill of the story. If you must see this classic on DVD, Rent only!!!!!

VCI 2 VHS set - This is "The Phantom Empire" as it was ment to be seen. It is only VHS quality but so much better than the DVD set. The sound is much better and ALL 12 CHAPTERS are complete and the cliffhanging thrill is there to drive you on to next chapter. This is a fun experience and maybe a purchase but definitely a rental!!!!

This 1935 serial is a one of a kind and if you are a Gene Autry fan this could be for you. Enjoy.

I agree with the first reviewer. I was looking forward to watching this serial but the transfer to DVD is so poor that I gave up after the 2nd chapter.

But bad turns to worse when they face Zal, the amazon ruler, in her bedroom. Director Fred Olen Ray assembles a seasoned troupe of genre film veterans for this bizarre cinematic coctail.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Anything With Ross Hagen And Robbie The Robot Will Be Excellent, I'm Sure..........2006-12-22

This is a cheapie starring legendary B-movie icon Ross Hagen as a master spelunker, scream queen Michelle Bauer as a "cave bunny," and Sybil Danning as an alien queen. The plot is almost unbearably silly: some explorers and scientists go on a trek to the center of the Earth, where they discover a land of luscious prehistoric cave bunnies who can't speak a word, but who have crafted rather nice bikinis for themselves. The cave bunnies are entangled with a group of underground mutant cannibals (I never knew that when you roasted a live human female on a spit that you left her swimsuit on, removing only the jeans...) and the three parties spend the first half of the film chasing each other around the caves until a laser-wielding Robbie the Robot turns up to try to stop the fight, though he is defeated by the makeup mirror in a woman's compact. (Really. Don't ask.)

Eventually the explorers plus cave bunny Bauer emerge from the cave in (of course) a land that time forgot featuring an evil, but busty alien queen, Sybil Danning, in the most ludicrous vehicle I have seen in a long time. From then on there is a three way struggle featuring the explorers, the Queen and her minions, and stop motion dinosaurs clearly lifted from another movie (I believe they are from the same source as was seen in the altogether more entertaining "Galaxy of the Dinosaurs.") They chase each other around the desert, wrestle, and encounter a volcano (more stock footage) before ultimately carjacking the Queen's vehicle, blowing it up in a cave, and finding themselves free on the other side of the cave with millions worth of diamonds they discovered in the desert. Confused? You will be.

This is essentially low-budget monster movie mayhem, and as such is camp of the highest order. It is stupid, but cheesily fun. I recommend it only to people who like campy, trashy mindlessly silly pictures starring yesterday's favorites from the B-movie circuit. The DVD has several extras including a commentary, and a sometimes (though mostly not) amusing introduction from Director Fred Olen Ray; this is part of his "Nite Owl Theater" series, which I hope he continues in the same spirit of Joe Bob Briggs. The drive in will live forever!

5 out of 5 stars What more could you want?.......2006-07-16

This movie has everything: lost underground "civilisations", cave mutants, bikini clad cave bunnies, Barbeque Girl, Robbie the Robot (back after all these years with a new head and available for rent, cheap), dinosaurs, a spaceship, topless catfighting, swordplay, laserbolts, stock footage of a volcano and Sybil Danning bounding about in, and almost out of, very tight leather. It just keeps rollicking along.

Who cares if it doesn't have a believable plot, a good script or decent acting? If you want a decent laugh listen to the director's commentary and the interviews. Shot in about six days on virturally no budget, nobody took this seriously, and neither should you.

The eye-candy keeps improving as the movie progresses, too. Somebody in Hollywood must have made a fortune making bikinis for movies like this. And Sybil Danning, almost busting out, bounds gleefully around the set, swinging a sword, glowering imperiously down her nose and trying not to laugh as she delivers her lines. Sybil, the Mistress of the Master Race (she is Austrian) plays the Alien Queen. (In this one they didn't let her carry a whip, but at the bequest of the other women on the set she punched out the leading actor.) She is tall, athletic, gorgeous and sexy, which makes her one of my favourite actresses. Who cares if she didn't have to act? I've seen her act in other movies, but in this one, she just doesn't have to.

If you want a movie with reasonable T&A, a fast pace, a bit of a laugh and which requires no use of the grey matter at all, I recommend this. If you want a good movie, forget it.

Enter a team of mining investors, interested in the land under the Ranch for its rich deposits of radium... and one scientist who believes in the lost city and wishes to uncover it's secrets. There's honestly not a truly great edition of this on DVD, unfortunately. This one is is probably inferior to the ALpha version, which itself is of rough quality. Still, any version of "Phantom Empire" is worth seeing.

Digiview makes those cheap DVDs you find at Walmart. You know, the ones that cost a dollar, and are packaged in slim cases. Like many companies of this type, Digiview specializes in public domain titles. This release is no exception. What you will get is a poor quality print with muffled sound, and no extras. Please ignore the cover which says "Digitally Remastered"; it is not. But I knew that when I bought this DVD used. What I didn't know was that this is an edited print which takes the 12 chapters of the serial and combines them into a bizarre 90 minute "movie".

So be advised, if you spot this DVD somewhere.
Maybe someday Image Entertainment will release a complete version, as they have done with the Flash Gordon serials. There is another company which has it in two volumes (six chapters per DVD), but from the reviews posted here, it appears as if that print isn't too hot either. Oh well, someday.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Strange, second rate B stringer but funny.......2003-07-19

The plot has more corn than a corn farm in Iowa. It is not just low budget, it looks like no budget. The humor is crude, the acting is not quite on par with the Tomb,a previous movie where most of the actors came from. But it is a cult classic type. I found it amuzing and a laugh every couple of minutes. The bare breasted cave bunny is odd but I believe that was thrown in to keep you from failing asleep. Overall worth the watch on boring evening when the reruns are showing.

        1 out of 5 stars Phantom Empire.......2002-10-29

Phantom Empire is a total waste of time and money. In the view
of the director, the showing of a few bare breasts is an okay
substitute for story and characterization. I kept falling
asleep while trying to watch this totally boring and completely
forgettable bit of film history. I'd reveal the plot, but I
        don't want to bore you.
