It's Christmas Eve, and Arnold needs to find a Turbo Man action figure, the craze of the season. Only they're sold-out, of course. So the race is on, and Arnold does fierce battle with other shoppers and merchants alike, all for the prize toy with which to purchase his son's affections. His chief rival and nemesis is Sinbad, a mailman who's always going--you guessed it--postal. (Must have looked good on paper.) All of which is unwittingly very sad, on the content level. But the film supposes itself to be amiable enough, on its own shabby terms, even when it climbs out of the screen and starts gnawing at your furniture. If the humor were to get broader it would make HDTV obsolete. The tone can only be termed good-naturedly mean-spirited. Goofy carnival music runs continuously in the background so we never forget that what we're seeing is, er, um, funny. All the action is composed of comic violence, like an unhip Warner Bros. cartoon. Do the filmmakers actually consider this cynical foray to be indicative of the Christmas spirit? Apparently so, because the resolution has Arnold winning quite inadvertently, and offers no clear alternative to the competitive commercialism that drives the film's attempts at humor. In a key scene that's meant to be touching, Arnold and Sinbad sit down for a heart-to-heart in which we learn that receiving much-wanted Christmas presents in our formative years is responsible for our success in adulthood. You get that Turbo Man, you'll be a billionaire; don't get it, you'll be a loser. Such is the formidable challenge of parenthood, to cater to the child's whims while it can still make a difference. This is what's wrong with this country. --Jim Gay

Description

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this hilarious comedy as a father desperate to buy that must-have present during a frantic Christmas Eve shopping spree. Howard Langston (Schwarzenegger) has promised his young son a Turbo Man action figure for Christmas, unaware it's the season's hottest-selling toy. And so begins a frenzied quest that pits Howard against a stressed-out mailman (Sinbad), a sleazy Santa impersonator (James Belushi) and every other harried parent in town, in "the best holiday family film in years." (Don Stotter, Entertainment Time-out)

5 out of 5 stars A holiday classic.......2007-01-22

Hollywood has welcomed a lot of great Christmas movies, and one of those great Christmas movies has,by now, definitely proven itself to be "Jingle All The Way". While not "A Christmas Story" or "Christmas Vacation","Jingle All The Way" allows itself to bring in both a Christmas spirit and dark comedy into itself at the same time (sort of what the first two "Home Alone" movies did),and is one of the most creative Christmas films to be made in Hollywood--which quite easily makes it one of the best Christmas films to ever be made and released.

This film allows its beginning to start off both well and informative by going into the life of businessman Howard Langston (Arnold Schwarzenegger). At the beginning of this film, while Howard has been able to maintain his career as a smart and successful businessman, things are not going well for him outside of his job. This is due to Howard missing out on several family events with his son Jamie (Jake Lloyd)and his wife Liz (Rita Wilson),which has lead to both Jamie and Liz developing less respect for Howard, and Howard constantly having to worry about the "friendship" of Liz and the neighbor of him and Liz,Ted Maltin (Phil Hartman),a single father who, while he may be nice, caring, and helpful,is also a little bit nosy and willing to win Liz over for himself--something that is Howard's worst nightmare.

However, despite the mistakes that Howard Langston has made as a father,Howard wants to make things better for him and his family--which is when Howard asks Jamie what he wants for Christmas more than anything, promising to buy Jamie the present. The present that Jamie wants is an action figure by the name of Turbo Man,the season's most popular action figure that has sold a lot of figures and made a lot of money--and is so cool that anyone Jamie's age who does NOT get one is going to be called off as "a total loser",something that Jamie does NOT want to become. In order to make things up with Jamie,Howard sets out to buy the action figure--only on Christmas Eve,when the action figure has sold out and Howard has forgotten to buy a figure from the request of Liz,which results in Howard frantically searching for the action figure, while he finds himself 1)competing to buy the figure with a mailman named Myron Larabee(Sinbad)who is on the same mission for his own son and is willing to do anything prevent Howard from beating him to winning the action figure,2)having to stop a con operation of the Turbo Man action figures lead by a mall Santa (John Belushi),and 3),of course, making his son happy while he makes sure that Ted does not steal Liz away from Howard.

If you are in the mood for a good Christmas film and a good laugh,"Jingle All The Way" is the film you want. Not only is the script well-planned out for the film's plot and the various events that occur throughout it with great humor and even some good morals at the same time, the acting here is a pure riot. While Arnold Schwarzenegger may not be Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey when it comes to the comedy film department,Schwarzenegger has proven himself to have a sense of humor over the years in some of his other films ("Kindergarten Cop","Twins",among others),and Schwarzenegger uses that sense of humor appropriately here and brings back his tough side as a more serious actor during the parts of this film that call for that kind of acting (most notably the scene with John Belushi),which pulls off this movie well. The other performances here are also really good,as well(Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad make a hillarious team here, and despite the fact that several people dismiss Jake Lloyd as whiny,Lloyd's performance as Jamie Langston is actually pretty good and finds Lloyd doing a good job at bringing the personality of Jamie onto the screen with the way a certain scene that feautures the character of Jamie),and are a large contribution to why this film is so funny. So,if you want a good Christmas film with a lot of holiday spirit and a lot of humor, put on "Jingle All the Way". It's a classic that will keep you entertained Christmas after Christmas, and will bring you non-stop laughter.

5 out of 5 stars Jingle bells,jingle bells,jingle all the way!.......2006-11-27

A holiday favorite enjoyed by many families since its 1996 theatrical release. Howard Langston(current California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger) searches high and low for a highly popular action figure for his young son's Christmas present that immediately sells out. The figure's name is Turbo Man,and to please his son,Howard dresses up as the superhero, appearing in a Christmas parade. Howard and his wife(Rita Wilson) are separated and the wife's boyfriend(the late Phil Hartman) helps her Christmas-decorate the Langstons' home. The Langstons' son Jamie finally receives his Turbo Man action figure on Christmas morning and not only that,Howard and his wife are back together(she dumps her boyfriend). Watch for cameo appearances by Saturday Night Live veteran Laraine Newman and James Belushi, who plays a portraying Santa Claus in one scene. Graz,Austria-born musclebound Schwarzenegger quit acting when he became California governor. Since this film's video debut in or around spring 1997,it was viewed by millions first on premium cable(i.e. Home Box Office),then over-the air and basic cable. If you loved this film, you'll also love TOTAL RECALL,KINDERGARTEN COP,TWINS,the TERMINATOR trilogy,ERASER and COLLATERAL DAMAGE.

Jingle All the Way is the perfect holiday comedy for those of you who can't find the right Christmas toy for your children.Schwartzenegger plays Howard Langston,a workaholic father who's son,Jamie,is constantly dissapointed with his father's inabitlity to come home for Christmas,or make his karate classes.Howard sees his opportunity for redemption when Jamie tells him he wants a Turbo Man action figure, the hottest selling toy on the shelves.Howard sets out on a quest for the toy, shooting blanks at every toy store. It seems that Turbo Man is more popular than he thought as he teams up with another desperate father looking for a Turbo Man:loud-mouthed mailman Myron Larabee, who eventually pits himself against Howard to get a Turbo Man first. It's a fun-filled ride from start to finish as Howard ends up at the Christmas day parade as the one and only Turbo Man in one of Arnold Schwartzenegger's funniest moments on screen.Get this movie!

4 out of 5 stars Great bargain, but a mixed bag........2007-01-24

This is a great bargain. Don't get me wrong! I would buy this again if it got lost. Can't beat the price for 4 good Christmas flicks.
Although I do wish they had included a newer edition of HOME ALONE in here. This one is the older letterboxed edition that is not enhanced for widescreen TVs. If your DVD player/TV/projector has the picture zoom option like mine, you can escape the problem with the black frame all around the picture on a widescreen TV, but the resolution/picture quality is still poor, of course.
JINGLE ALL THE WAY was the same thing, despite the deceptive cover which stated that the movie on the DVD was included in both Full Frame and Anamorphic Widescreen versions. Not so! The same crippled leterboxed frame.
No complaints about either the MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET, which is presented here in beautiful Anamorphic Widescreen, or A CHRISTMAS CAROL, which, as a made for TV movie, is presented in Full Frame, maintaining the original aspect ratio.
All in all, a great deal for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Nice box set!.......2007-01-12

I bought this box set for my friend's children as a Christmas present. I really just wanted to send "Home Alone," but it came with all the other films too, which was a bonus.

My friend and her family moved from California to Massachussets last year. The kids (age 4 and 6) were very entertained when they saw Governor Arnold acting in the Christmas movie "Jingle All the Way." It was a big hit and reminded them of home in California. Plus it entertained the parents too. An unexpected bonus, and a great story to tell, don't you think?

"Home Alone" reminded them of their visit to see us in Chicago a year and a half ago. That was my intent in sending that movie to them.

"Miracle on 34th Street" reminded them of when we all went to New York City last spring when we went to visit their Massachussets home.

Although my review is unusual to say the least, it was a very meaningful Christmas present to the kids since the box set highlighted all of the places we have visited together over the past year. I am sure that is not what you intended when you put the set together, but it was a really great gift. Thank you!

4 out of 5 stars Christmas Classic Box set.......2007-01-10

Fabulous value! The home alone movie was a great movie to be included in this box set along with the classics!

4 out of 5 stars A Real Christmas Keepsake.......2007-01-10

This set is a real sleeper that can fit into every home. The iconic fame of "Home Alone" among kids is no secret, but at least one other movie makes the set worth buying. "Miracle on 34th Street", the only remake IMHO ever done better than the original, is a beautiful tapestry of uplifting story, touching script, great cast, and magnificent cinematography. It's my favorite contemporary Christmas movie. "Christmas Carol" with George C. Scott was well made, but it's hard to supplant the sentimental older favorites with Reginald Owen and Allistair Sim. "Jingle All the Way" with Arnold Schwarzenegger had a great message, but seemed to lack holiday atmosphere. Not bad, though, as a filler item. Overall, a set well worth the money.

--Jim Gay
