The Brady Bunch Movie
The big-screen version of the hugely popular 1970s television sitcom takes an original angle: instead of simply re-creating the old series, the film spoofs it by presenting the merged family as blithely unaware that fashions and customs have changed in the '90s. Shelley Long and Gary Cole are hilarious as the ultra-square yet libidinous Mr. and Mrs. Brady, Christopher Daniel Barnes is an ideal Greg, and Christine Taylor seems practically cloned from the original Marcia. But director Betty Thomas (Private Parts) shifts the emphasis away from comparisons between old and new Bradys and concentrates on quasi-surreal parodies and set pieces featuring the Brady kids doing their spirited, singing thing for a disbelieving public. Smart, sharp, and happy to share its conspiratorial mood with an appreciative audience, The Brady Bunch Movie is a kick.

A Very Brady Sequel
This second ironic send-up of the old Sherwood Schwartz sitcom is even funnier than The Brady Bunch Movie. Shelley Long and Gary Cole return as the married heads of the merged family known as the Bradys, and Christopher Daniel Barnes and Christine Taylor reprise their roles as eldest stepsiblings Greg and Marcia. As with the first film, the clever premise finds the Brady clan caught in a kind of '70s time warp, while the rest of the world has moved well into the '90s. Greg is still looking for a "groovy girlfriend," Mr. Brady thinks the idea of a cable that sends 50 channels to one's TV set must be a joke, and Mrs. Brady spends hours at the beauty shop only to look exactly the same as she went in. There's a plot involving an imposter (Tim Matheson) who claims to be Carol's long-lost husband, but the real charge in this comedy comes from the way these pseudohip characters deal with sexual taboos (is there any real reason that Greg and Marcia shouldn't get it on?) and the incredulous reactions of other people. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Why didn't they make a third!!!.......2007-04-17

Now I normally despise remakes of old tv shows, but the Brady Bunch movies are different - they don't "do the same old thing" with updated sets and characters nothing like the originals...

...they are the original characters surrounded by an updated reality.

The movies are parodies of the tv show they pay homage to, but at themselves as well. They are not a desire to modernize old characters that some dilettante dingbat thinks modern audiences would appreciate (hint, modern audiences DON'T), but the writers actually did something creative without losing the essence of the original characters. They knew the charcters and how to fit the new style comedy. They have the surreal spark that actually makes doing something with an old premise worthwhile. And such a mix is a rare treat; that most tv-made-into-movies creators just cannot even begin to grasp.

The movies themselves are a handful of vignettes from original TV episodes; but warped with modern day society - including puns that would otherwise be deemed vulgar, come off surprisingly inoffensive because these characters are still in the 1970s and the rest of the world is in 1995 (or 1996).

Well, there are some differences - nobody expected the movie's writers to also incorporate the actual actors' behind-the-scenes moments into the movies as well; it has been said that the actors playing Marcia and Greg may have dated, so lo and behold the writers turn Movie Marcia and Movie Greg into doing it. This is somewhat perverse, but because we all know it's a self-referential homage, the end result is more hilarious than vulgar.

Of course, there are the DVDs themselves - the 5.1 Dolby sound is terrific, and the visual looks colorful and crisp, even if there are some periodic artifacting defects. Nothing major. And it's in 16:9 enhanced format, so I'm not going to complain.

The DVD releases are solid, there's little that could be done to improve the quality, and it's a shame a third Brady movie was never made. And it's a shame so many old-tv-to-movie shows are even given a first shot with their "movies by numbers" ineptitude.

5 out of 5 stars brady bunch movie.......2006-12-25

back in the day when jan was all like "Marshs, Marsha, Marsha . . . it's always all about Marsha!" it was great -
in the film you see the underlying Pschotic Break happening as the voice tell her what to do -
the new film versions of old shows bring in quality science -
what Lost in Space moive does to justify the classic timetravel paradox -
this here film does to explore modern thought on abnormal psychology
it's like the same entertainment we grew up with with all our education in human nature mixed in
finally the 60's and 70's have grown up with us noe having th skills to present a great story without spaceships on strings and see how a family can remain in there own personal timewarp

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Deal....First Movie takes the cake!.......2006-11-07

I am a die-hard Brady fan. The first movie is hilarious. Perfect movie to watch on a rainy day or when it's so cold out, all you want to do is relive your favorite Brady movies in these funny satires. In my opinion, the first movie is much better than the second. However, there are a few funny parts here and there in the second.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Brody is Bull.......2006-05-31

I love this movie, but this review is not about the movie itself. It is about the review "Brody "Brodyman" (Amity Island)" wrote. It was complete and utter bull that needs to be taken off this website. Brody himself needs to be removed as well, looking at many of his other reviews, which are quite gross, creepy, and uncalled for. So those of you who want to know the truth about this movie, I suggest you buy it because it really is hysterical. But obviously Brody was talking about his own family bunch, because none of what he said was true about this movie.

4 out of 5 stars 30 years later... Still poking fun at Mike & Carol.......2004-09-17

Shelley Long (as Carol), Gary Cole (as Mike) and Christine Taylor (as Marsha) were born to play these roles. The rest of the cast is great too (no-name Jan, Jennifer Cox, has some great lines and confused looks). Gary Cole nailed all of Mike Brady's mannerisms, voice inflections, and all around character to a flipping tee. Shelley Long was a great choice and she played the part of ever upbeat and quirky Carol beautifully. I couldn't have chosen two better actors to play Mike & Carol - these two performers knew their charactors like the back of their hands. For those of us who grew up in the late 1960's and 70's when the Brady's were on prime time TV - these movies are a great flashback. The Brady's are still stuck in their 70's time warp with all of America changing (1990's style) around them. The house interior and backyard scenes were just as I remembered them. While each of these movies are not deep or valuable as far as the material goes... the entertainment value in my book is still high. These 2 movies were just plain fun to watch and I found myself laughing out loud many times. The "Sequel" is equally good and just as funny. Cameos by most of the original cast and a few other stars including Michael McKean (Lavern & Shirley's "Lenny") and Davey Jones and The Monkees. DVD extras are minimal, but worth it on the low price alone.

If the phrase "Marcia Marcia Marcia!" sends you into a giddy childhood reverie, then you'd better run out and get The Brady Bunch - The Complete Third Season. Not only does this season feature that definitive episode--in which middle sister Jan fights to get out from under the shadow of her older sister Marcia--but several other all-time favorite episodes, including the one in which Peter's voice starts to change, threatening to wreck the potentially blazing career of the Brady Six musical group (presumably launched by producers feeling the heat from The Partridge Family). The show had found its tone and its creators crafted 23 perfectly calibrated visions of a domestic fantasyland, decked out in mini-skirts and bell-bottoms (check out Mrs. Brady's recurring paisley pantsuit, made of some fabric offensive to nature). Marcia turns into a diva when cast as Juliet in the school play; Greg loses a bet with Bobby and has to obey the little boy's every whim for a week; Jan has to wear glasses; Cindy yearns for a boyfriend--simple problems cheerfully solved by pithy moral lectures delivered by stern but loving parents. Despite adolescent hormones, snug pants, and the occasional ungodly short-shorts, sex never rears its complicated head.

Though ratings were modest during the series' five-year run, in syndication the show became a phenomenon. As divorce became increasingly common in the 1970s, perhaps this smoothly blended and impossibly functional family had an irresistible appeal to kids from broken homes. Though the Brady siblings--played by Barry Williams, Maureen McCormack, Christopher Knight, Eve Plumb, Mike Lookinland, and Susan Olsen--were a charismatic sextet, it's Florence Henderson and especially Robert Reed as Carol and Mike Brady, uber-parents, who give The Brady Bunch its familial glow. But everyone was the center of one episode or another; even Ann B. Davis dominated one episode as maid Alice's lookalike cousin, a WAC Master Sergeant who imposed military discipline on these lazy suburbanites. No matter how corny the jokes or how daffy the stories, The Brady Bunch continues to cast its hypnotic spell. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars GROOVY, HEAVY, AND OUT OF SIGHT! IT'S "THE BRADY BUNCH" SEASON 3! .......2006-05-09

"It's always Marcia! Marcia! Marcia!" "These glasses make me look absolutely goofy!" "We're having pork chops and apple sauce." There are so many memorable lines from these Season Three episodes that highlighted the series with some of the best shows. The entertaining "vacation" episodes open the season with a family trip to the Grand Canyon. By the fourth episode Greg is "wheeling and dealing" for a new car, continued by the Brady family getting chosen for a TV commercial, Jan getting glasses, and the kids begin their singing career (even though Peter's voice is changing). The scripts are fresh and entertaining, the kids have some of their best moments in this season with Jan overcoming "her sister's shadow," also meeting her Aunt Jenny which has comic appeal with the nuttiness of Emogene Coacoa. Marcia dates Greg's arch rival Warren Maloney, and Greg dates Marcia's arch rival Cathy. And the battle of the "little kids" with Bobby tired of being a "shrimpo" and a "pee-wee," and Bobby and Cindy both setting out to show "little kids can do important things too" as they attempt to set a new "teeter-totter" record. These episodes are both memorable and charming as "The Brady Bunch" continued with their "out of sight" and "groovy" family togetherness that both entertained and delighted their fans then and now. Followed by two more "super cool" seasons!

5 out of 5 stars Third best season.......2006-03-06

This was my third favorite season. I especially liked the two shows where they filmed in the Grand Canyon. I finally got to go to the Grand Canyon in 2004--it's as beautiful in person! TV doesn't do it justice!

5 out of 5 stars "Greg I agree." "That you're hogging the bathroom?" "No that your peasants!" -Marcia, -Greg, -Marcia.......2006-02-13

In this season alot happens. The Brady kids really start the process of the stage of growing up. There are quite a few episodes about Jan. First she falls into Marcia's shadow (her sisters shadow), then she gets glasses, (the not-so-rose-clored-glasses) and then she finds her role model (Jan's Aunt Jenny). A few episodes are also based on Peter as well. First his voice starts to change (dough, re, mi), he becomes an eavsdropper, (The private ear), and then he develops a power. (Power of the press)Greg gets his drivers license. Marcia is just the same being popular.(and becomes a big pest in Juliet is the Sun) Bobby is in two episodes that he tries to prove even a small and little kid can do something. And he is also in "The Big Bet" in which he gets power from Greg. Cindy is really in only one episode where she is the main character. In "Cindy Brady, Lady" in which she gets her first date. (really a play date.)

Because of Gilligan's Island and The Brady Bunch, writer-producer Sherwood Schwartz will forever be a TV hall-of-famer. They were his only real hits, but they were both grand slams in their prime times and have remained syndicated favorites ever since. Following closely on the Gilligan's Island season 2 release, The Brady Bunch is ready for home theaters with a nicely designed, 4-disc set of 25 first-season episodes. The pilot episode, "The Honeymoon" sets up the story we all know from the theme song (lyrics by Schwartz) by giving us the marriage of Mike and Carol and the coming together of the six kids. Schwartz provides commentary for just this first show, but he fondly recalls his intention of sweet, subdued, and often corny gags the pre-fab family encountered as a precise format each week. Two other episodes include commentary by Barry Williams (Greg), Christopher Knight (Peter), and Susan Olson (Cindy), and their reminiscences are equally affectionate about time on the show and everyone's surprise at its enormous success. Every Brady episode is a classic in some sense, and this first of five seasons (those kids did grow up fast) includes some real charmers when the six Brady kids still seemed impossibly young. It's hard to say the show was ever hip, even though it became slightly more attuned to a pop sensibility as the Bradys moved into the '70s. But man, is this 1969 everyfamily ever square. Even so, it's hard to resist the way each one gets their own screen time with shows devoted to simple childhood joys and traumas--Jan's missing locket, Cindy's missing baby doll, Greg's crush on his math teacher, Peter's swelled head when he gets his picture in the paper, etc.

In a brief bonus featurette we get more innocuously entertaining interview comments from Schwartz, Williams, Olson, Knight, and Mike Lookinland (Bobby). It's interesting that all the subjects make note of how seriously the classically trained (now-deceased) Robert Reed took his role as patriarch, Mike Brady. His reputation as being "difficult" followed the long run of the show, but if Schwartz's first choice had gotten the role it could have been a lot worse. (Schwartz is delighted to reveal the famous name and career path that followed, so the mystery shouldn't be spoiled here.) As it was during its TV run, The Brady Bunch on DVD is clearly meant for a specific generation--yours. --Ted Fry

I've just ordered the First Season of The Brady Bunch..for my granddaughter. She watched the two-parter Hawaii vacation episode with me a few weeks ago and was hooked (she's [...]). She made me promise to get her more episodes to watch, so I guess it's true, it IS a nice little show that will never die. I have to admit, I'll be watching the episodes with her.

Wow what to say about the Brady's! I literally grew up with this family every afternoon after school and now all these years later they still hold a wonderfully warm place in my heart which I hope never dies. Premiering in September 1969 this series was the brain child of Sherwood Schwartz who of course also created the classic "Gilligan's Island" another of my all time favourites. The series for the time was really quite unique in the respect that it began with two families being run by widowed parents coming together to form one family, the Brady's. Second marriages until then were extremely rare on televison and that gave the series, especially in its early days many great opportunities to show the troubles, adjustments, and joys of two different families coming together as one. Even though I love all five seasons of the show my favourite without a doubt is this first season where the children obviously because of their age were at their cutest, and episodes did make an attempt to show the adjustments the two families went through when they joined together. Season One for me is also special because it had more of a 1960's look to it still before it took off on its super groovy course once it moved into the 1970's.

One of the really strong points of "The Brady Bunch", was the excellent group of performers in the cast who were all first rate in my belief. Robert Reed and Florence Henderson as Mike and Carol Brady made really likeable and warm parents and had a terrific chemistry together that made them seem like a husband and wife coping with six children. Henderson in particular has a number of very touching moments in various Season One episodes as she takes on the mothering of the three Brady boys who had lost their own mother. And who could forget the totally wonderful Anne B. Davis? This veteran television comedy performer has always been my favourite Brady, (well her surname on the show was Nelson but to me she was always a member of the family) and as the wisecracking, ever bubbly housekeeper Alice she was always a total joy in each episode and she often got the funniest lines. I also have great affection for all six actors playing the Brady children on the show and it was great how as the series progressed and the children grew older each slowly developed their own distinct personality much the same as real life children naturally do. Long crucified by the critics "The Brady Bunch", has proven all the skeptics wrong by never leaving the airwaves or viewers affections and it is now hopefully charming new generations of viewers via the season by season release of the show onto DVD.

"The Brady Bunch - The Complete First Season", DVD contains all twenty four first season episodes plus the original pilot "The Honeymoon". What a joy these nostalgic TV time capsules are for weary 21st Century television viewers like myself! Accused of being corny, and unrealistic, I feel that is an unfair dismissal of this show which I've always believed presented positive role models where family members were cared for and always encouraged to talk about their problems. I have many favourite episodes among this season but some of the standouts for me are;

"The Honeymoon" (Pilot), where we see Mike and Carol's wedding and some unexpected mayhem involving a run away fluffy and Tiger and a doomed wedding cake that has an unfortunate close encounter with Mike !

"Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore", where Alice, after encouraging the boys to start taking their troubles to their new mother, begins to feel unneeded and decides to leave only to be stopped from leaving by all the Bradys who together devise a plan to show her how much she is really valued.

"Every Boy Does It Once", where Bobby has a nightmare that Carol will turn out to be a bad Stepmother like in the movie "Cinderella", and decides to run away from home only to be stopped by Carol who shows her real love for her new son by telling him that the only "steps", in the Brady house are those on the stairs.

"A Camping We Will Go", where we see the first of the famous Brady holidays. Later memorable holidays would take the Bradys to the Grand Canyon and Hawaii in later seasons. This filmed on location episode puts the boys against the girls when they dont want any "females", along on their annual "male only", fishing trip.

"The Voice of Christmas", (my favourite) where Carol loses her voice in the lead up to the family's first Christmas together when she will be singing at Church on Christmas morning and its finally up to Cindy's strong belief in the true meaning of Christmas to save the day.

"The Brady Bunch", can certainly be viewed as the last gasp of television innocence from a simpler time however its likeable characters, familiar and yes perhaps sentimental view of life (nothing wrong with that!) still appeals to audiences 33 years after the show left the airwaves in prime time. As Florence Henderson once said in a interview discussing the eternal life of the Brady's, "Nothing seems to be able to keep this little show down". So true! And now we can enjoy the adventures of television's first truly blended family in these beautifully presented DVD box sets. What more could Brady buffs like myself ask for! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Kids love it!.......2006-11-13

While I purchased this for my husband, our kids absolutely love it. My husband and I both grew up watching the show and love reliving the episodes. We plan to eventually buy the entire series -- a great gift for hard-to-shop for people.

5 out of 5 stars Here's the story of a lovely DVD set.......2006-09-19

There are very few television shows that have any staying power like the Brady Bunch. A television show that centered on the complicated lives of two parents getting married bringing with them each three kids from previous marriages. The hilarity ensues as the Brady household is quickly filled with six kids, a housekeeper, and a dog. The series avoided the common mistake of using current references and issues and stuck to the ageless problems encountered by growing kids. This formula gave the Brady Bunch a timeless quality that holds up today and makes for very wholesome family entertainment. The Brady Bunch may have only aired for five seasons, but it became the subject of countless spin-offs, parodies and look-a-likes. Many adults have fond memories of growing up with the Brady Bunch, and it is referenced continually in pop culture, giving it a special place in television history.

Paramount Television Collection continues their catalog releases with the popular Brady Bunch, but this time they have included a welcome change with the addition of a couple of extras. A featurette, as well as three episodes containing commentaries, are bonus features found on this set. All 25 first season episodes are included in this set and clock in at about 10 hours and 52 minutes according to the box. A common inclusion to all the Paramount Television releases recently, are multiple promos for various other sets. The promos are for Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy and MacGyver. Each promo has a chapter index at the beginning to facilitate jumping to the main menu. The main menu itself is a static screen with a very colorful style common to the late '60s. The selection icon tends to get lost in the background on the main menu until you begin to navigate.

Packaging:
The set comes in a box with the 9-panel opening of the show recreated with a lenticular cover on the front. The lenticular cover is a neat touch that works quite well in good light. Inside the box are two slim cases each containing two single sided discs. The episode descriptions and original airdates for both discs are found on the back of each slim case. The artwork is full of screen captures and wonderful moments from the series, and the disc silk screens are very colorful and feature two of each characters' from the show.

Commentary Tracks
Creator/Producer Sherwood Schwartz provides commentary on the first episode entitled "The Wedding." His commentary lacks in any extensive detail with regards to this episode, and he tends to repeat things mentioned in the featurette. Sherwood Schwartz sticks to what he knows and talks about producing a series.

The commentary tracks on episode 8 "a-Camping We Will Go" and episode 21 "The Hero" are provided by Barry Williams (Greg), Christopher Knight (Peter) and Susan Olsen (Cindy). These commentary tracks make up for the first one with the enthusiasm and energy of the three actors. The actors reminisce about everything from the costumes and props, to inside details about certain scenes and neat little tidbits of information about the episodes. These commentaries are well worth listening to for an inside perspective on the creation of the show and its impact on the actors.

The Brady Bunch - Coming Together Under One Roof (17:29)
This is a 17 1/2 minute featurette that gives a broad perspective of the show and its creation. It provides a good intro to the series and is a welcome addition to this set for younger viewers and new viewers to the series. I look forward to seeing whether there was more material shot during the interviews that we will see on the next season sets.

3 out of 5 stars Here's the Story..........2006-09-01

The Brady Bunch was on the air between 1969-1974...that's five years, people...what were we thinkin' to have them gone on for that long? Were we really that stoned in the 70s? C'mon!

Actually, I rather like the Brady Bunch especially season one. As the show progressed it seemed to get hokier and hokier. I guess Robert Reed (Mike Brady) was a real tyrant on the set; always battling with the writers and the directors. For those of you who don't know, Robert Reed was a classically trained actor and so, yeah, of course he's gonna have problems with the scripts and the direction of the show...but hey, Robert...."IT WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE SHAKESPEARE!"

I guess this show is now considered to be a television classic. Who knew? Even when it was on it never reached the top ten. It was always in the low double digits and now it's part of permanent pop culture. It's so stained with the 70s. Bad hair, bad clothes, bad furniture, bad painting schemes...I find myself watchin' it and I think to myself, "Good God...what were we thinking?" And then I see an old picture of myself from right around the same period at ten years old; maroon pants, an orange shirt, long hair jammed to the side sitting on a frickin' green and blue velvet chair...dang. What was I thinking?

It's a good show. It can be pretty funny at times. My favorite all time episode is when the two families had just become one and the "yucky 'ol girls" were going on the annual camping trip with the "Brady men."

I guess in years past, the Brady men just lived off of what they could fish out of the lake. well, not this time, they caught absolutely nuthin'. So knowing that the boys were feeling dejected as well as hungry, Carol whips out a picnic basket full of fried chicken and potato salad. Mike is about to dig in when a horrified Greg screams out, "Dad! Don't! That's sissy food..."

Cracks me up every time...

So, if you're in your 40s and you haven't yet had each episode drilled into your brain at least sixty times since they've been on in syndication, get the collection...or at least Season 1. You'll be thinkin' to yourself, "Holy crap! What was I thinkin'...?"

The Brady Bunch never scored high ratings during its five year run, but this friendly family comedy has remained in reruns ever since, while bigger hits have slipped into oblivion. Pretty much everyone who grew up in the 1970s or '80s knows the show inside and out: A vision of suburban family life so utopian it's as fantastical as Neverland or Santa's workshop--and just like these imaginary realms, it casts a spell over every kid who wished all problems could be resolved with a few wise words, a good-natured shrug, or a winsome smile. The Brady Bunch: The Complete Second Season is indistinguishable from every other season, but the reassuring formula is crucial to the show's appeal. Eldest brother Greg (Barry Williams) may decide he's all grown up and wants a groovy bachelor pad, or eldest sister Marcia (Maureen McCormick) may get all riled up about women's lib and decide to join the Frontier Scouts, or super-maid Alice (Ann B. Davis, whose persona is hilariously similar to Ellen DeGeneres) may fantasize about running off with an old flame, but by the end of the show you know everything will return to a zen-like domestic harmony.

It's all pretty bizarre when you realize that both halves of the family have suffered the death of a parent! The most angst to be found is the relentless identity crisis of middle sister Jan (Eve Plumb), who tries to remove her freckles with lemon juice and buys a curly brunette wig to forge a new self-image. Nowadays Jan would be a prime candidate for bulimia, but in the Brady world such psychodrama is unthinkable. This even emotional keel could have been creepy and antiseptic, but due to the charm of the kids and the smooth yet earthy presence of Robert Reed and Florence Henderson as parents Mike and Carol Brady, The Brady Bunch just seemed nice. You wanted that to be your family. If you watched the show in your childhood, watching The Brady Bunch: The Complete Second Season as an adult will lull you into a sweet, blissful dream. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Complete Season 2 The Brady Bunch.......2007-05-13

I grew up watching the Brady Bunch and now my children, ages 5 and 9, enjoys watching it too. It is a nice, clean, family show to watch, unlike so many other shows on in today's world.

5 out of 5 stars Groovy, Neato and Outtasite !.......2007-02-13

I initially bought season one for my 3 girls for Christmas two years ago. We watched all of the episodes over and over again. I, of course, got to re-live my childhood in the process. They begged me for more Brady Bunch so I bought season two. Now they are walking around talking like the Bradys. They use words like groovy, neato, dumm dumm etc. I just have to laugh. It's much better than them repeating other words they hear on t.v. We live in Europe so we don't get any re-runs of the old 70's sit-coms. I will definitely buy the rest of the Brady Bunch series. It's just good, clean, groovy fun.

4 out of 5 stars The Bradys .......2007-01-10

I bought this for my niece (10) who somehow became a fan (thanks Nick@Nite?)
I watched a few episodes with her and none of the cheesy magic has really faded. Its become a bit of a passing of the torch in our house.
Nice way to live a few memories with kids.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT SEASON! NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST!.......2006-07-30

The second season of "The Brady Bunch" saw the end of the "adjustment" squabble episodes and there's plenty of "classic" episodes in this set: "Where There's Smoke"....Greg caught smoking, "Will the Real Jan Brady Please Stand Up" and "The Not So Ugly DUckling"....the first two of Jan's "inferiority complex" episodes, "The Slumber Party Caper" and "Our Son the Man". There are also some real "underdeveloped" though not "stinker" episodes, just mediocre: "Double Parked", "Alice's September Swan Song", "A Day in the Life", ..... and like the Jan episodes above, a recurring theme with each of the Brady kids...."Lights Out" where Cindy has to overcome her fear of the dark because of a magic trick and the episode where Bobby has to overcome his fear of heights. The show is still entertaining and a cut above the rest of today's series. There are some great hilarious moments with Alice who always manages to steal the show with her witty comebacks and quips!

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed by my [...] daughter and myself.......2006-05-16

As the other reviewers stated, there are no extras in this DVD set. It's "just" the Brady Bunch, no more, no less. I think my daughter watch the entire set overnight on her DVD player. I watched most of it one afternoon while my children were out. Instead of the dusting, mopping, and scrubbing I planned to do, I found myself parked in front of the TV. LOL, you can't hear the TV when the vacuum cleaner is running!

Anyway, if you're a Brady Bunch fan, you'll enjoy this. My 3 brothers,2 sisters, and myself were glued to the TV on Friday nights to watch this when we were young.Even though 35 years have passed since the Brady Bunch premiered, I still find myself strangely drawn to the Brady Bunch. As a mom and grandma, I would have no trouble letting the children and grandchildren watch this. I will be buying the other seasons of the Brady Bunch in the future.

--Tom Keogh

    Description

THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE brings the lovable family of the 1970's into the modern world, to see how their good old-fashioned values pan out in the streets of Los Angeles. The Brady's house still sparkles with the same orange and olive green furniture as the original show, but the surrounding area has changed drastically. Confronted by carjackers, new fashion trends and popular culture in general, the Brady's remain perky and pleasant to the world around them. When their next-door neighbors try to buy the Brady's home in an attempt to raze the neighborhood and develop a mini-mall, the Brady family must unite and find a solution.

3 out of 5 stars Porkchops, Apple Sauce, and Teeter Totters.......2007-06-09

When this film was released in 1995 my local paper ran a Brady quiz. Much to my horror I answered more than 90 percent of the questions right and was considered an expert. I grew up with 7 sisters and Fridays nights at 8:00 were reserved for "The Brady Bunch". Despite my resistance the Brady Bunch seeped into my subconsious. As for the film, they got the right actors to play the Bradys particularly Gary Cole(absolutely brilliant in "Office Space" and "Ricky Bobby"), Shelley Long, Christine Taylor (eerie resemblance to Maureen McCormick), and Jennifer Elise Cox. The conceit of this film is that that the Bradys are living in the day-glo seventies while the world around them is nineties grunge. My problem is that the makers of the film have kind of a cynical agenda. They want to tap into boomer nostalgia but on the same token show their contempt for it. There's something a little meanspirited about this enterprise despite the best efforts of the actors in the film. They got it right for the sequel though.

    1 out of 5 stars Revolting.......2007-05-28

I love the brady bunch, and have for a while. so when a movie came out about them, I saw it and thought, "blah." i don't think that they got very good actors at all, and i think that he whole trying to win 20,000 dollars thing was blah. and i just think that they kind of ruined the classic brady bunch series.

4 out of 5 stars Ladies and Gentlmen...Jennifer Elise Cox!.......2007-01-19

Could she have nailed JAN any better? Amazing performance!! As for the rest -- the women are great, the men... so-so. The film is a genuinely funny romp through the Land of Brady... but the stand-out performance by far is by Ms. Cox. Marcia Marcia Marcia!

3 out of 5 stars For The Brady Bunch Fan.......2007-01-04

We enjoyed the movie. If you're not a big fan of the original show, you may not like it. It's a funny movie with crude humor.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2006-08-04

I'm a not big fan of the T.V show. I like it, but the movie is much better. I also think Christine Taylor plays a better Marcia Brady then Maureen McCormick. I think she had no personality at all.

The movie was very funny, and so was the sequel, however there was no bonus material. I know it wasn't very popular in the 90's, but they could've added something. Maybe the original cast talking; maybe a little bit of information of how they made the movie. I know I always like to watch Deleted Scenes and the Gag Real. But there was nothing. The movie is so funny though that I didn't notice it until after I watched the movie twice.

I love the casting. Shelley Long and Gary Cole make a perfect Carol & Mike Brady. Christine Taylor, like I already said, is a better Marcia Brady. Peter annoys me, though. I love how some of original Brady cast was in it. Too bad the real Mike couldn't see how funny the movie was.

Also, I believe there is an error of Florence Henderson playing Grandma. Grandma is on Carol's side, right? Not Mike's? Well, Carol wasn't 'born' Brady, so Grandma shouldn't be a Brady. Well, in the casting, she labeled Grandma Brady. I find that an error, as, her name should be just Grandma.

Overall, The Brady Bunch movie is great. If you haven't seen the sequel, see it. They're both such great movies.

1 out of 5 stars Brady Bunch Variety Trainwreck ..........2007-03-28

My generation loved The Brady Bunch. We also loved Sid & Marty Krofft. However, the combination of these creative forces blew up like a 4th of July on bad LSD, locking the viewing into one long and boring psychedelic trip.

If you're going to do a show featuring singing, you have to have great singers. The Brady Kids were duped into thinking they could make it as a music act, like the Osmonds or the Jackson 5, but they just didn't have the talent. Sometimes, in situations like that, a show gets lucky and produces a really great musical act from an actor's career. Ricky Nelson and David Cassidy are the two best examples.

But the Bradys couldn't sing. Then, on top of that, you have the over the top gay glamour of the Krofft brothers ... and well ... it's bad. Very, very, bad.

My kids just watched all the original episodes of The Brady Bunch, so I thought it might at least be funny to let them look at the Variety Show.

They were bored, and that says it all.

ARE THERE ANY PLANS OF RELEASING ALL EPISODES OF THIS SHOW ON DVD?

    2 out of 5 stars How's your pain threshold?.......2007-02-01

My partner and I rented this over the holidays for a laugh. In the sense that it's the strangest thing we'd ever seen, it did achieve the laughter goal. The cast introduces the musical numbers in character (as in, "Ladies and Gentleman, our brother Greg"). Also, Alice inexplicably wears her blue maid uniform on stage.
But the fact that they're supposed to be related occasionally seems to be overlooked. Skits where the brothers are cruising the sisters, and Donny and Marie are playing boyfriend and girlfriend are two examples. However the best is when Greg "moves out", and he and Carol sing a lovelorn duet to each other. Remember, they're mother and son, people! I wouldn't recommend buying this DVD, but it does make for a great Saturday afternoon rental.

1 out of 5 stars You will not believe just how AWFUL is this program ! ! !.......2006-07-09

I tried to warn my friends just how AWFUL the Brady Bunch Variety Hour was, before I pressed the close drawer button
    on the DVD player.

"Yeah,Yeah, We know!, We know!" they smugly replied.

"Okay, get ready to view television history".

And away went some 47 minutes of our lives that we can never recover. 47 minutes that seemed like 47 hours.

Mind-numbling, "what were they thinking" bad TV.
One just-terrible production number after another,
tied together with some lame story line.

Words fail me how ghastly this show is.

If you are a fan of truly bad TV, you gotta see this!

2 out of 5 stars This show is aweful! (but fun to see).......2006-07-05

The Brady Bunch Variety Hour must be worst TV show ever made!
The DVD price was right so I decided to buy it..For those who want a slice of the 1970's it is the perfect DVD. The worst part by far is the singing. Especially painful is when the "Bradys" sing Baby Face and the Bradys splashing around in the pool dressed as clowns with a really bad laugh track.

However it was a OK value for the cheap price!

3 out of 5 stars Brady Insanity!! .......2004-11-03

These movies are actually not that bad at all and worth it for most Brady maniacs. Here's a brief rundown:

    1) The Brady Bunch in the White House - I've never really liked these Brady movies. I've felt since the beginning that they were mean-spirited & completely nonsensical (why on earth are the Brady's stuck in the 70s while the rest of the world is not? I understand how bizarre of a juxtaposition it provides for the spoof, but it's very one-note). That said, Gary Cole's take on Mike There's-always-a-lesson-to-be-learned Brady is especially hysterical. As the third installment of these films, "...White House" completely throws all credibility to the wind and presents us with a truly bizare, almost surreal, vision of the Bunch with them, literallly, taking over the country. The result is nothing great, but certainly funny enough in its own audacious way.

    b) Growing Up Brady - This Barry Williams (Aka, Greg) backed TV pic aired on the original Brady mother station, ABC, in or about the same time as an awful, sensationalistic, FOX movie called - get this! - "The Final Days of the Brady Bunch," which was nothing less than utterly depressing. Here, ABC not only based the flick on material from Williams' book of the same title, but kept with the light spirit of the original show, only hinting at the behind-the-scenes bickering between Robert Reed & Sherwood Shwartz (executive producer of the show). Williams' claims that Reed & co. went to great lengths to make sure the kids weren't exposed to such ugliness, and Reed's homosexuality was not flaunted on the set. Here, the subject is treated with respect & taste, culminating in a scene where a young Williams confides in TV mom Florence Henderson, who dealt directly with Reed's unfortunate awkwardness on the set. The film could've gone a bit further, as Williams' book did, in relaying how much Reed truly cared about his Bunch, taking them on trip to Europe and lavishing them with expensive gifts.

ABC also scored with a winning cast, who for the most part look and behave an awful lot like their real-life counterparts. More than that, they seem very well schooled in their respective mannerisms. In fact, Bobby Brady is played by the son of Mike Lookinland, the originator of the role. He looks & sounds exactly like him!! They even duplicated the black hair dye job that producers forced upon the blonde Lookinlad in the early days of the show. Speaking of duplication, the old Brady set is reproduced to a tee...right down to the familiar horse sculpture beneath the stairs.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2004-08-01

I loved the first two Brady Movies and when I saw this one, I rushed home to watch it. Not only does this film NOT have the original kids, it's a real bomb. Sad to say, it's not even worth renting and I was so disappointed. I also hate wasting money.

1 out of 5 stars GARY COLE CHANNELING ROBERT REED GETS A STAR.......2006-02-13

The only reason to watch this installment of the Brady Bunch Movie Franchise is to marvel at Gary Cole's dead-on impersonation of the late, great Robert Reed. This from a guy who once played an all-night radio talk show host on TV? Cole even physically resembles the Brady dad.

Too bad everyone else makes you moan for the originals. Though, I must admit, the producers/casting directors keep on getting great Marcias.

Oh, and the plot -- others have stressed that the plot is ludicrous and patently improbable, but that's not the real problem. The issue is this: would Mike Brady REALLY behave this way? It doesn't matter if you have to suspend disbelief; this is make-believe, after all. But a scriptwriter's first rule is DO NOT VIOLATE THE RULES OF YOUR CHARACTER'S UNIVERSE.And in the Brady Universe, Mike and Carol would not behave as they do in this flick.

    3 out of 5 stars Far Out!.......2005-09-03

This movie wasn't that bad.I like it better than A Very Brady Sequel.Marcia and Mike were good.Everyone else was too old, young,or just didn't look like the character.

1 out of 5 stars Not Brady, not funny.......2005-02-08

"The Brady Bunch in The White House" is like Chinese food that's been left on the counter overnight - unappetizing and best left in the box.

My husband and I loved the first two Brady Bunch movies so we couldn't wait to order "The Brady Bunch in The White House". We assumed it had also been a theatrical release. If we had known it was a made-for-TV movie, we never would have ordered it.

If we had watched it on TV, we would have commented on how terrible it was after the first fifteen minutes and turned the channel to watch a rerun of The Simpsons. However, we paid $20 for it so we watched every agonizingly horrible moment of it.

Obviously, this TV movie did not have the budget of the earlier theatrical releases ("The Brady Bunch Movie" and "A Very Brady Sequel") so they could not afford to hire decent writers, a decent director or a decent cast. The actors playing the kids were not recognizable as the Brady kids with the possible exception of the young woman playing Marcia although she was not nearly as skilled as Christine Taylor from the first two movies. The "girl" who played Jan looked to be well in her twenties, Cindy was too small and almost incomprehensible with her lisp. The other kids were at least as bad.

The actress playing Alice brought no "Alice-ness" to the role. Instead she was like a stranger in the family and a damned unfunny one at that.

I had hoped that Saul Rubineck would add some much needed humour to this insipid script but although he was more professional than most of the other actors that littered the screen, he was not given a single funny line. But then nobody else was either.

Besides the obvious problems with this movie - bad script, bad acting, bad direction and bad casting, the main reason this movie doesn't work is that in this movie the Brady's are a part of the modern world. In the first two films, the Brady's not only don't live in the modern world, they don't acknowledge that there IS a modern world. That's the joke. They left the joke out of this film.

The bottom line is this movie is a stinker. Skip it. Don't buy it. Don't rent it. Don't waste two hours watching it on TV.

2 out of 5 stars Last-ditch attempt to cash in on nostalgia.......2005-01-15

The only reason why I gave this movie two stars is the idea that Mike Brady would make a great and scandal-free (Were the writers trying to imply something?) president. I actually have no disagreement on that point.

I have a big disagreement with how Mr. Brady finds himself in the White House. The Brady Bunch was built on a foundation of cheese, but their White House occupancy is a new level of absurdity.

We never see Mike getting elected or undergoing any of the constitutional procedures which people are supposed to go through on their way to becoming the president. Don't tell me that everybody in the government is either so unethical or mysteriously gone that a California architect has to save the country. An eight year old could easily see through this movie's script.

I usually like political movies of all types, but this one even had me instead longing for the dentist's chair. It looks like a red, white, and blue version of the ill-fated variety hour (which was made with the television cast).

Greedy entertainment executives were placing the 'Brady Bunch' image on a product without first wondering if the overall concept was reasonably consistent with the tone and image of the original series. Why didn't anybody at the studios remember that a majority of people would NOT watch something just because it had the 'Brady Bunch' name on it?

Making matters worse, this project has yet another cast playing the Brady's; they make the movie cast actually look authentic by their collective lack of acting skills.

    1 out of 5 stars If I Could Rate It 0 Stars..........2004-11-07

    ...well, you know that cliche.

I'm a HUUUUUUUGE Brady Bunch fan. I'll definitely be one of the people who buys Season 1 of the original series on release day, if Sherwood Schwartz and Paramount ever release it. Also, I thought the Brady films were HILARIOUS!!! Shelly Long and Gary Cole made great Mike and Carol Bradys, and the actors and actresses who played the Brady Kids were funny and memorable.

Sadly, this third entry into the Brady Movie 'trilogy' is horrible, at best. Gary Cole and Shelly Long have to work with weak dialogue, a lame storyline, and a supporting cast that you wished could have stayed locked away in the Presidential Bunker for a long time. I think the only non-veteran actor or actress in the film that went on to something successful was one of the girls at Marcia's slumber party, who's currently in that irritating McDonald's commercial with that guy who can't find his Happy Meal toy.

I'm surprised that this film was even allowed to be broadcast on TV, it was so wretched. It definitely ranks (pun intended) with other misfires, like the Variety Hour and The Bradys spinoff. What's really sad is that I think this also puts the final nail in the coffin of the 'anything Brady' nostalgia phase, which also included the Growing Up Brady movie. After this film, I wonder if any more Brady-related projects will be made.

Already Sherwood and Paramount - it's time to clean the palate with the release of Season 1 of the Brady Bunch TV series!!!!

--Tom Keogh

I love the brady bunch, and have for a while. so when a movie came out about them, I saw it and thought, "blah." i don't think that they got very good actors at all, and i think that he whole trying to win 20,000 dollars thing was blah. and i just think that they kind of ruined the classic brady bunch series.
