An impressively rigorous, unsentimental, and harrowing look at combat during World War II, Band of Brothers follows a company of airborne infantry--Easy Company--from boot camp through the end of the war. The brutality of training takes the audience by increments to the even greater brutality of the war; Easy Company took part in some of the most difficult battles, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the failed invasion of Holland, and the Battle of the Bulge, as well as the liberation of a concentration camp and the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest. But what makes these episodes work is not their historical sweep but their emphasis on riveting details (such as the rattle of a plane as the paratroopers wait to leap, or a flower in the buttonhole of a German soldier) and procedures (from military tactics to the workings of bureaucratic hierarchies). The scope of this miniseries (10 episodes, plus an actual documentary filled with interviews with surviving veterans) allows not only a thoroughness impossible in a two-hour movie, but also captures the wide range of responses to the stress and trauma of war--fear, cynicism, cruelty, compassion, and all-encompassing confusion. The result is a realism that makes both simplistic judgments and jingoistic enthusiasm impossible; the things these soldiers had to do are both terrible and understandable, and the psychological price they paid is made clear. The writing, directing, and acting are superb throughout. The cast is largely unknown, emphasizing the team of actors as a whole unit, much like the regiment; Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston play the central roles of two officers with grit and intelligence. Band of Brothers turns a vast historical event into a series of potent personal experiences; it's a deeply engrossing and affecting accomplishment. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Based on the bestseller by Stephen E. Ambrose, the epic 10-part miniseries Band of Brothers tells the story of Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army. Drawn from interviews with survivors of Easy Company, as well as soldiers' journals and letters, Band of Brothers chronicles the experiences of these men who knew extraordinary bravery and extraordinary fear. They were an elete rifle company parachuting into France early on D-Day morning, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and capturing Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden. They were also a unit that suffered 150 percent casualties, and whose lives became legend.

Band of Brothers.......2007-07-08
We had the Band of Brothers of VHS tapes which my father in law had described as the closest movie out there that actual shows what truely happened. In this day and age everything is now DVD. I was so happy to be able to purchase this through Amazon as I trust Amazon and its vendors. The Band of Brothers has special meaning for my husband since my father in law passed away and I was pleased to be able to receive it in time for father;s day. Band of Brothers is a very good movie especially when you know someone who has served in the war. Everyone needs to see it and remember what occured and what we went through
The Eagles Nest people, the Eagles Nest... .......2007-07-03
This is the Holy Grail of WWII movies. If you are a fan of Saving Private Ryan, Letters to Iwo Jima, Flags of our Fathers, Schindler's List, Tora Tora Tora, Enemy at the gates, or any other classic WWII movie (Kelly's Heroes, ahem!), and have not seen Band Of Brothers...than you need to stop what you are doing and order it right now and watch it...If you can't get it fast enough, still order it and rent it while you wait for your very own copy to come in the mail. I like Saving Private Ryan, but this smokes it out of the water. Smokes it people, smokes it....puff puff glub glub...
Band o' Blood........2007-07-03
I bought this for my boyfriend for Christmas and he was so thrilled to get it . Him, being in the military, loves it for being realistic, and also being a true story that's well played out.
I watched the first disk and was impressed by it, but having a weak stomach, I was squirming every so often, trying to avoid someone get blown up.
Four stars for the gore.
But this collection is a must own for every guy in the military, military buff, or just a guy who loves war stuff.
BoB is true greatness.......2007-07-03
This is one of the best WWII depictions I have ever seen. So many stars in many great roles.
The Best Docu-drama.......2007-07-03
With Shogun a distant 2nd (and that was phenomenal), this is by far the best docu-drama/miniseries filmed to date! In context alone, watching this not only informs the viewer of the hardships of WWII, but of the sacrifice of Easy Company and the soldiers just like them! Thanks for your service gentlemen!!

Description
HAPPY LAPS SWIMMING INSTRUCTION - THE TOTAL IMMERSION SYSTEM
Since 1989, Total Immersion has become a phenomenon among improvement-minded swimmers - the first program in the history of swimming instruction with "raving fans." TI has become so popular because it is simpler than any alternative; it works with unprecedented dependability and it makes swimming enjoyable and deeply satisfying. But the one thing TI has not been is to be available to people who were afraid of the water or who couldn't swim at all...until now.
Happy Laps is the first TI self-help tool to address the real basics: how do I swim without fear of sinking, how do I breathe in water, and how do I move with such efficiency that I will be able to swim graceful, nearly effortless laps for health, fitness or pleasure with absolute comfort and confidence. Happy Laps can turn anyone into a swimmer. This self-teaching DVD offers a simple, clear, common-sense approach to learning to move through the water easily, comfortably, and so pleasurably that your practice time becomes the healthiest, most rewarding, part of your day. Happy Laps will show you, step by step, a completely fresh way to move through the water, a way guaranteed to make swimming easier than anything you've tried before.

Not happy..........2007-06-27
$30 for this and no case?! I can't believe that for $30, this is delivered in a sleeve that doesn't even close.
Also, having read the book, I thought the disk would expand on the material in the book. Instead, it only goes very quickly through the drills. Perhaps this would be sufficient for an experienced swimmer, but for a novice, it is really lacking in content.
Good Supplement to Total Immersion Book.......2007-06-11
The book (Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way To Swim Better, Faster, and Easier) and DVD aren't completely aligned, but do supplement each other well. Actually, I probably wouldn't recommend the DVD without the book.
There are two extremes of swimmers that would likely be interested in this swim method: complete beginners looking to start swimming and experienced swimmers looking to examine this method. Like most, I was somewhere in the middle (after being told by a swim coach that I looked like I was being electrocuted in the water, I thought that this relaxed style of swimming would be a good remedy).
Beginners will instantly see the value; it starts at the very beginning with active floating. Experienced swimmers will need to be prepared to start at the very beginning as well, as Terry Laughlin (correctly) sees a need to break down established patterns of movement in order to build new muscle memory.
My freestyle has become significantly more relaxed. Of course, I still have a long way to go to becoming a proficient distance swimmer (practice, practice, practice), but this video has helped eliminate a lot of bad habits so that the practice is actually beneficial.
One criticism (aside from the somewhat cheesy production): proper flutter kick is nearly ignored. Although it's not the primary source of propulsion for efficient swimmers (e.g., Terry only kicks once per stroke), it's still a significant supplement when wanting to swim fast. It would have been nice to see it addressed more in the video.
Total Immersion DVD.......2007-05-20
The visuals are very helpful. Along with the book, they make understanding this swim style a snap.
Disappointed in DVD.......2007-05-15
I thought I was going to get a great, how-to DVD that would show me some new techniques and give me a better understanding of how to improve my freestyle. Based on the reviews I read prior to my purchase I figured this would be the right DVD for me. Boy was I wrong. The instruction is geared for the complete beginner and spends WAY TOO much time telling the swimmer that they should work on the techniques with a "swim buddy." A lot of good that does when you swim alone and have no one you can swim with at all. The DVD also wastes too much time with the basics of the freestyle stroke. From its title, "swim better, faster and easier" I didn't get that at all from this DVD. It also stated that you would learn about the turns, and open water swimming. In reality, it shows about 8 minutes in total for those two segments. Don't waste your money on this DVD, look for another teaching video, or start asking people you know where they learned about swimming and if they can recommend anything.
I've gotten more out of other swimmers at the pool than I did out of this DVD.
A Great Tool When Used In Conjunction With Book.......2007-05-13
This DVD is a great watch, & very useful to get a visuale aspect on drills as explained in 'Triathlon Swimming Made Easy'. It has great underwater & above water footage, & a really cool shot of fully underwater freestyle. However, it would be less useful if used as a stand alone product.

Amazon.com essential video
This box-office hit from 1969 is an important pioneer of the American independent cinema movement, and a generational touchstone to boot. Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper play hippie motorcyclists crossing the Southwest and encountering a crazy quilt of good and bad people. Jack Nicholson turns up in a significant role as an attorney who joins their quest for awhile and articulates society's problem with freedom as Fonda's and Hopper's characters embody it. Hopper directed, essentially bringing the no-frills filmmaking methods of legendary, drive-in movie producer Roger Corman (The Little Shop of Horrors) to a serious feature for the mainstream. The film can't help but look a bit dated now (a psychedelic sequence toward the end particularly doesn't hold up well), but it retains its original power, sense of daring, and epochal impact. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
I can't believe I just discovered it.......2007-07-07
Well I'm 38 years too late but I just discovered this movie. This is not one of my most favorite movies. There really aren't any hippy movies like it. I mean you have Cheech and Chong, Half baked, and a handful of other comedies. But nothing serious, hippies weren't just bumbling morons. This portrays hippies in a real dramatic light. Let's you in their world and wanting more. I liked it and highly recommend it.
Easy Rider.......2007-06-27
This film represents myself, and my generation from the early 60's. I understand and identify with it it completely. Sometimes those timess become a little fuzzy in my memory, but a film like this brings it all back. It was actually made during that time also, with actors in it who truly felt their parts. Whenever I feel like like revisiting my 60's adventures, I watch this movie.
You'll either love it, or hate it. .......2007-05-11
This film is wildly popular with a certain type of person, but it's just as easy to find "that" other type of person who can't stand Easy Rider and see nothing positive about it. After watching this film, you will no doubt have realized that there was two main kinds of characters in this story. One was the character that was open minded, tolerant, and accepting of the world. The other type of character was hateful, close-minded, violent, and very scared of character number one and all the things that those kind of characters represent.
First off, this is what today we would call an independent film. This movie was very renegade when it came out in the market. This particular DVD has a documentary called "Shaking the Cage" inside the extras sub menu. Great documentary, and the title says it all. Hopper and Fonda showed classic American balls by making this movie, and making it in the manner they did. Can you tell whose side I'm on yet?
The photography is amazing. All of the road shots in this movie are stunning to look at, and the locations throughout the film are real, gritty, and distinctive. I imagine that even if this film would have had a huge budget, it still would have appeared to be very raw. Hopper obviously wasn't making a fantasy movie here, he crafted a very real story and placed it in the real world. This is a film that is intended to get the audience thinking, get them asking questions, and yes, probably make you a little angry. The activism that was born and raised in the 60's is still there in Hopper and Fonda's creation. These two men have always been involved in what has been called the "counter-culture" movement, and I guess this film is what made them household names for doing so.
Awesome soundtrack as well, and how could there not be. I own the double CD of this film's soundtrack, and it's just beautiful music to listen to. Again, listening to it makes me think, and it makes me ask questions about my country and my world. In my opinion, anyone who considers themselves a truly free U.S. citizen should be a thinker, and should always have a little skeptic sitting on their shoulder asking questions about what is going on in the world around them.
I think this film will stand the test of time as not only an entertaining film, but a fairly accurate historical document that covers a very turbulent and important time in our nation's social history. If for no other reason than to take a glimpse into the late 60's to early 70's, this film is worth watching. You will no doubt find yourself clearly on one side of the fence or the other about Easy Rider, there is no fence sitting. If you like it, it's brilliant, but if you hate it, it's boring hippie garbage. It is what it is.
enjoyed.......2007-04-06

Great breakdancing DVD :).......2007-05-31
I thought this DVD was very well put together. It has a lot of great breakdancing techniques and the background scenes and the camera angles showing the breakdancing techniques makes it clear as to how to perform them. There are two DVDs inside, one for basic moves and another for more advanced techniques. It will keep you coming back to it also because you can't master it all the techniques in a day, and you can learn some breakdance terminology also. Decently priced and cool DVD!
The best!!!.......2007-05-10
The best b-boy instructional video around. Period.
Loaded with extras.
NOT SO GOOD.......2007-05-03
This video looks amatuer in the way it was shot. It looks like it was filmed in someone's basement or backyard. Also, the language is so street I barely understood what they were saying (not everybody is a street kid english please!!). Very disappointed and definitley not worth the money!
VERY GOOD, i personally DO recommend this dvd.......2007-04-14
I bought the dvd last year, and I only apologize to the curious possible buyers that it took me so long to get on here and tell you how good the program is. First, the videographers are excellent because when they show the guys dancing, if they're doing a full body dance, they show them head to toe at all times, and whether its the upper body, lower body you ALWAYS know what the dancer is doing which is crucial to learning. Next, it teaches a whole lot of material, street dancing, waves with you body through muscle and joint isolation, the robot, top rocks, advanced/power moves, basic moves, it teaches you everything you need to get your bboy skills goin if you're serious about not only learning to break from a beginners stand point, but also advancing very far. If you master this dvd set you'll rock with anyone out there. Because you'll not only know so many different moves, and aspects of breaking and just street dancing period, that you'll be skilled enough to literally start developing your own style and moves, as well as to update on present day moves that you see in the coming future. You'll be strong enough, and fast enough in your body, and you're mind will just be in that breaking mode. If there are any moves your seeing from the past two years that arn't on the dvd, it's because the dvd was copyrighted in 2004, but if theres any level you need to get to this dvd will definetely advance you to it beyond measure. I'm glad I bought it, I can't say I regret anything from it. Oh i forgot, it has alot of different guys that brought different aspects to the culture of breaking, and if you like researching the dance, theres some names on here that you might appreciate knowing about. Theres a basic moves dvd in the pack, and an power moves dvd, and theres breaking events that you'll see, and just all these different dudes that'll teach you any and everything.
PERFECT.......2007-04-04
Actually it is VERY COOL CD i swear it is so clear in everything especially in the accent it is very easy for who don't know a lot in english language & i did a good breaking :P :D WOW i'm now a bboy :D

An atmospheric and sexy crime caper, this stars Dennis Quaid as a New Orleans police detective. He's a smooth talker who butts heads with the new assistant district attorney, Ellen Barkin. She's rigid and plays by the rules; he is mildly corrupt. They soon find themselves romantically entwined, and a bit chagrined.
Director Jim McBride (Great Balls of Fire) was in top form with this 1987 sizzler. You may not remember the particulars of the plot, which concerns supposed gang killings and police corruption, because it is the romance that has staying power. Blame this on Quaid and Barkin, who send off enough sparks to light up Bourbon Street. They are not only sexy together, but endearing, which makes you want to like them as much as they like each other. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Customer Reviews:
Exciting, fun movie.......2007-05-13
Loved this movie. The music, actors and story was great. It was fun and exciting to watch. Wish it didn't have to end. Truly enjoyed watching Dennis Quaid in action. LOVED this movie.
Easy..........2007-02-20
Very good movie for its time. Shows some insight to life in New Orleans.
Very Interesting.
easy movie.......2007-02-17
While not a classic or a great movie, you will enjoy this one. The casting is good and Quaid and Barkin make a believable couple and the plot works for them. And although there are many cop movies this one pops out due to the good atmosphere and the couple's chemistry.
A must see.......2006-10-30
You have to see this movie if you like Dennis Quaid. I do have to say that being from New Orleans the way he talk is a little too much, but I can't help but love Dennis in this movie.
Excellent Movie.......2006-08-31
I have always loved this movie, and was thrilled to find it on DVD at such a reasonable price.

Customer Reviews:
Thanks goodness for line dancing 101!.......2007-06-21
I can't tell you how many times I have embarrassed myself trying to dance at weddings and other functions. I've tried countless times to learn the dance steps from others, but it always seems so confusing. This video has been a HUGE help to me.
Shawn breaks down each dance into VERY simple steps, and shows you two different angles so you can really understand what it should look and feel like. Since they are in their own segments you can rewind and repeat each step until you are completely comfortable-at the end of the "step" lessons they are all tied together and vuala! you're doing an actual dance! (some with some pretty snazzy variations too!) The only thing I would have preferred is if the actual versions of the songs had been used-a very minor setback.
I would not hesitate to purchase another video from his collection when needed-this one has already worked wonders! Buy it-you'll be happy you did!
Easy to learn Line Dancing!.......2007-06-05
I tried line dancing without having had any instruction and was lost most of the time. After using Shawn's DVD "Line Dance 101", I had to share it with my friends. It has everything one needs to easily learn alot of dance steps in a short time. My friends now line dance with me as a healthy exercise and we're thrilled with the great instruction available to us on this DVD...smooth and easy and fun! I recommend it highly!
Line Dancing 101: A quick start guide to line dancing.......2007-06-04
Shawn's videos are wonderful! I love the way his videos are set up. I was afraid of trying and learning from videos, most "how to" videos are very intimidating and are too fast pased especially when you are first starting out (and I mean never being on the dance floor trying these dances before), but Shawn's videos are very easy to follow in fact before I even realized what was happening, I had already gone through the first dance and was actually doing it and keeping up. I have since bought several others and love them all!
Best Instruction - Thumbs Up!!.......2007-05-26
I've been trying to learn how to line dance for a couple of years and tried to learn through many different kinds of sources - Even as far as getting on the dance floor and being chased around by the other dancers while I tried to mimick them! I purchased this Quick start guide as well as the Volume 1 Essentials and I couldn't be more relieved to find that someone cared to take the time to make certain that I knew what the steps were called and that I learned how to do them before throwing me into the dances. I can't wait to get started on the 1st Volumn and I must admit that my favorite dance so far is Cotton-Eyed Joe! haha
Super Easy to Follow!.......2007-05-18
Having never line danced before, I was just thrilled with the instruction in Line Dance 101. The line dance steps are clear and very easy to follow. I especially liked how Shawn taught each step separately and then put them into dances. Seeing the footwork from different angles was also very helpful.
I never felt lost while watching this video and I'd defintitely recommend this product to my friends.

Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2007-06-08
Enjoyed the dvd and would definitely recommend it! Goes well with Terry Laughlin's book.
Great Swim DVD.......2007-06-01
This is a fabulous DVD for the novice or expert swimmer. Hard to believe but I fit the first category and I have gone from struggling, gasping swimmer to a smooth and steadily improving swimmer. I have Master Swimmers ask me about my training and some of the drills I practice. My training consists of reading Total Immersion ...the book by Mr. Laughlin which is fleshed out by this DVD. The drills are all described in the book but hard to recreate on your own. Not only does the DVD show you in great detail and narrative how to do the drills but you get to see good technique in all four strokes. Never mind about the packaging. It is the content that is absolutely priceless.
Invaluable self-coaching tool.......2007-03-09
Like all the Total Immersion DVD's I've viewed, this one provides easy-to-follow instructions for drills, arranged in series of gradually increasing difficulty. Even without a coach, I find that I can use these intelligently designed drills to learn new strokes or even a whole new way of being in the water.
This latest addition adds new material on the crawl, not repetitions from earlier crawl DVDs. My balance in the water, already good after working with the TI Freestyle Made Easy DVD, has improved dramatically after just a few sessions in the pool using these latest drills. I had never before learned any butterfly, but the drills on the Four Stroke DVD have enabled me to "dolphin" two pool lengths in a row after just a few days of practice....I expect to be performing the complete stroke--as well as the breaststroke--soon.
This video calls into question the common wisdom which tells us that you can't really learn a skill correctly without the aid of a teacher. I am hoping someday to be able to take some lessons with a TI swimming coach, but until then, I am enjoying the water (for the first time in my life) and feeling safe, powerful, and fluid as I move through it.
By the way, the production values are excellent. The slow-mo sequences are particularly helpful in breaking down each stroke into its elements for learning. It would be nice to have a brief introduction to the swimmers who elegantly demonstrate the drills so we could see what their faces look like.
Thanks, Terry Laughlin, for producing this wonderful tool.
Four Strokes Made Easy.......2007-01-12
This DVD shows in detail progressive drills for each competitive swimming stroke, so that by practicing them the swimmer can greatly improve technique, which leads to faster and more effortless swimming. At the age of 50 I recently joined a Masters swimming program, and practicing the drills has greatly enhanced my understanding of and ability to do the strokes.
Ok for drills.......2007-01-09
Good explainations of drills and easy to see examples. Focus is ONLY on drills, not on any full stroke. Something more comprehensive, showing the breakdown of a full stroke, would be more useful for age-groupers.

Amazon.com essential video
This subtle, existential character study of an emotionally distant outcast (Nicholson) forced to confront his past failures remains an intimate cornerstone of American '70s cinema. Written and directed with remarkable restraint by Bob Rafelson, the film is the result of a short-lived partnership between the filmmaker and Nicholson--the first was the zany formalist exercise, Head, while the equally impressive King of Marvin Gardens followed Five Easy Pieces. Quiet and full of long, controlled takes, this film draws its strength from the acutely detailed, nonjudgmental observations of its complex protagonist, Robert Dupea--an extremely crass and frustrated oil worker, and failed child pianist hiding from his past in Texas. Dupea spends his life drinking beer and sleeping with (and cheating on) his annoying but adoring Tammy Wynette-wannabe girlfriend, but when he learns that his father is dying in Washington State, he leaves. After the film transforms into a spirited road movie, and arrives at the eccentric upper-class Dupea family mansion, it becomes apparent that leaving is what Dupea does best--from his problems, fears, and those who love him. Nicholson gives a difficult yet masterful performance in an unlikable role, one that's full of ambiguity and requires violent shifts in acting style. Several sequences--such as his stopping traffic to play piano, or his famous verbal duels with a cranky waitress over a chicken-salad sandwich--are Nicholson landmarks. Yet, it's the quieter moments, when Dupea tries miserably to communicate and reconcile with his dying father, where the actor shows his real talent--and by extension, shows us the wounded little boy that lurks in the shell of the man Dupea has become. --Dave McCoy
Customer Reviews:
"Life's Too Short".......2007-07-05
Jack Nicholson plays Bobby, a man who will only have life his way. Much like Camus' 'The Stranger' or Hemingway's return home soldier in "A Soldier's Story," Bobby lives for the moment. He goes through women at whim and convenience, and he doesn't like to waste any precious time.
At the beginning he hooks up with a friend to work in the oil fields. In one of the early days on the job, they get stuck in traffic. His friend sees that they'll be late for work, whereas Bobby can only see wasted time. So he does what no one else would do: He leaves the driver's seat and climbs a truck moving a piano. Once he uncovers it, he starts to play. As soon as he finds the song he wants, traffic starts moving again, taking him to a new destination. Se la vie.
The movie challenges convention. In a famous restaurant scene, Bobby, who has decided to pick up two women in distress along the way, has an interesting way of getting what he wants when he asks for whole wheat toast to go with his omelette. But real affairs have to do with his sister who is a recording pianist artist. When visiting her at the studio, he finds out that their father has had several strokes and is in poor health. Because he wants to, he goes to visit, and the results show us someone who refuses to put up with convention when it doesn't suit him.
Yet, a scene with his ailing father suggest that he is also living a lie, one that exposes a vulnerability underneath his callousness.
'Five Easy Pieces' is a classic. It feels authentic because Nicholson and supporting players give us a clear and solid, yet episodic vision of a man who lives for the moment and accepts as ludicrous anything different than his way.
Five Easy Pieces.......2007-07-03
One of the definitive, highly acclaimed films of the early-70's New American Cinema, Bob Rafelson's edgy, deep character study features complex and courageous performances from both Nicholson and Black. As an existentially pained outcast of upper-middle-class breeding, Jack's pent-up Bobby is especially absorbing to watch, as he denigrates Rayette's crass singing efforts or spars with a waitress over the vagaries of a chicken-salad sandwich. A moody portrait of alienation and unresolved pain, Rafelson's Oscar-nominated "Pieces" will stick with you.
"You Want Me To Hold The Chicken?".......2007-06-24
This movie could have been a masterpiece, but it doesn't have a message other than total despair about the human condition. Jack Nicholson plays Bobby Dupea, who is an oil field roustabout when first we lay eyes on him--but he is not exactly who he seems.
He fits right in with his Buddy Elton (Billie "Green" Bush), Elton's wife Stoney (Fannie Flagg), and his girlfriend, Rayette Dipesto (Karen Black). Though Rayette is far from an accomplished bowler, which irks Bobby, she loves him, puts up with him, and wants to be a country singer. She listens to "Stand by Your Man" by Tammy Wynette constantly, which also irks Bobby. She not only wants to emulate Tammy Wynette's singing, but she embodies the sentiments expressed in the song. As we get to know Robert Eroica Dupea better, we see that director Bob Rafelson intended the song as ironic commentary.
The trailer parks, truck stops, oil fields, and bowling alleys of the first part of the movie are pure Bakersfield. Some reviewers thought that it was meant to be Texas, but it was pure Bakersfield. The first inkling we have that Bobby is not just an oil field roustabout takes place on I-5 just before the Highway 43 turn off to Shafter and Wasco. Drinking on the way to work with Elton they get in a traffic jam. Bobby climbs aboard a flatbed hauling furniture and a piano. He plays the piano, but where we would expect him to be at best a honky tonk piano player, even amid the cacophony of car horns, you can tell that he is classically trained. He continues playing, even as the truck veers off to an exit.
Continuing South from Bakersfield, next we learn more about Bobby as he arrives in Los Angeles and walks into a recording studio. The session is for a classical piano concerto, and the recording engineers are less than sympathetic to the woman playing. She is eccentric, and has the quirk of singing, out of tune, like a child, while playing. This is Bobby's sister, and she wants him to come back to the family mansion to visit their sick father. He is the patriarch of a musical family, and Bobby is very much the prodigal son.
Bobby reluctantly agrees to return, to attempt to reconcile with his ailing father, and even more reluctantly agrees to let Rayette come.
Along the way they pick up two women stranded on the road. One of the women is an insufferable nihilist, who complains constantly about the filth and garbage produced by men and civilization. She is also intended as ironic commentary, but in a strange post-modern way. It is as if modern art, from T.S. Elliott's Wasteland, to this very movie, is nothing but incessant grousing. It offers no solution, but merely points out flaws and shortcomings incessantly. She wants to go to Alaska, because she thinks it is clean. She has seen the pictures of the snow. Bobby is amused by her naiveté and says that is before the big thaw. The woman's companion is named Terry Grouse (Toni Basil), by the way. The whole encounter would seem to be pretty pointless, except it leads to another classic scene, where they stop at a truck stop and the waitress refuses to make any substitutions. "You want me to hold the chicken?"
In Washington Bobby confronts his father, who has had several strokes, and is completely mute. This is a difficult scene for Nicholson, but he rises to the challenge. You see several layers deep, the raw and hurt emotions, and a small boy trying to please his father, but never feeling like he can measure up.
There is another crucial scene where Bobby is trying to seduce a music student (Susan Anspach) who is living at the family compound. She asks him to play something for her, and he plays her a beautiful piece by Chopin. She responds, but he laughs and says he picked it because it was the easiest piece he knew, and he played it when he was eight years old, and he played it better then. He felt nothing, he confesses. This leads to her telling him that he is unable to love himself, his work, music, or anything. Unable to love himself, he doesn't deserve the love of another. This is the closest the film comes to stating its message, but as you can see, it offers no hope, no solution. Sure, Bobby could just find something to believe in, or love himself a little more, or be like the woman pointing all this out to him, but that is just not available to him. He can't make a leap of faith, having no faith, or love, in or for anything.
Like I said, this movie came very close to being a masterpiece, but like the scene with Bobby and his father, it has nothing to say. It leaves you stranded, just as Bobby will inevitably leave Rayette stranded, in a gas station, as he hitches a ride to Alaska without even taking along a jacket.
Inauthenticity everywhere.......2007-05-12
Or, as Bobby would probably say, "Bulls*t everywhere!" Or something more explicit. Even with The Joker, the psychopathic writer in Kubrick's "Shining", and his chilling performance in "The Departed", I would say this is Nicholson's scariest character.
Bobby Dupea, a former piano prodigy who finds the pretentiousness of art, culture, and his entire family so revolting that he takes Timothy Leary's edict closer to heart than any hippy--he becomes a worker on an oil rig, a complete alcoholic, a brutal misogynist and generally reprehensible human being all around, completely divorced from his origins and disdainful of his considerable talents. Karen Black, his gorgeous hilbilly girlfriend, really forms the paradox of Dupea's character: his ferocious embrace of man's lower instincts in favor of a greater authenticity and his actual repugnance when facing them for any extended period of time. The most telling scenes in this dark but compelling tale of ultimate failure consist of Rayette and Bobby together: Bobby listening to her sweet, well intentioned but limited sentiments about life and the small world she was born into, his constant annoyance but sympathy; his violent defense of her in the presence of his "high brow" family, and his ultimate inability to stay with her--even when he knows she's pregnant.
Bobby's more or less constant agitation is a result of his unwillingness to face his hopelessly divided nature. Stopping traffic in a drunken rage, he hops on a moving truck and begins furiously playing a piano to the incomprehension of his drunken backwoods co-worker, flipping out on a waitress for misunderstanding his order, and trying to reconcile with a father who is catatonic from a stroke: these are all the actions of a man without the strength to face his inner demons or acknowledge them. He protests too much without really wanting anything to change.
Bob Rafelson was obviously conscious of the contradictions inherent in the 1960's counterculture and this a commentary of sorts: the rejection of the father--the dominant culture--for good reasons, and the impotence of the son--the 60's mentality embodied by Bobby--all culminating in disaster (the present day). This is a masterpiece and wins out over similar modern fare like "American Beauty" or "Good Will Hunting" anyday.
That poor waitress.
Five Easy Pieces.......2007-05-08
Robert Dupea[Jack Nicholson] starts out being his normal tough guy and
woman chaser. The plot changes when he meets Susan Anspach and falls
for her, making him change is idea about women. This seems hard for
Jack to do. Overall this is a good movie, but a bit slow at times.

Fun short workouts with a lot of variety.......2007-06-11
This package includes two workouts, each about 40 minutes and incorporating an intro with new age / yoga style "intention setting", dancey cardio (about 15-20 minutes), approximately 10-15 minutes of toning and a short yoga cooldown. The workouts are taught in an indoor classroom setting with live druming but what seems like recorded music.
The Light & Easy workout is more appropriate for beginners, with a slower pace, more traditional aerobics moves, and less overall intensity. It finishes with some pretty traditional ab work incorporating a squishy ball (not included with DVD). The only thing I did not like about this workout is during the intention setting, when they usually have you put your hands in a "cria", the one for this particular workout was surprisingly strenuous--flapping your arms up and down for what seemed like forever. It was the most difficult part of the workout for me.
The Latin workout incorporates Latin music and a few familiar steps such as flamenco and mambo, and some totally original creations of Gillian & Teigh. I love the choreography in this workout, although it is a bit hard to follow at times and I know I look ridiculous doing it. True, there is not much instruction or technique, but I think the focus in this workout is not doing the steps exactly right but getting moving and having a good time. Even the dancers in the room are not all doing the exact same thing. I find I get really bogged down and frustrated in videos that focus too much on dance instruction and getting your hips moving exactly the right way and I don't get a good workout. Here I don't worry about it and just move.
What I like best:
I like that the choreography is different, fun, and not focused on being a perfect dancer. Although Teigh and Gillian can be corny at times, they are endearing and motivating. I enjoy the fact that they're focused more on being your best self than losing weight. I like that the workouts are short and include many different aspects - yoga, dance, toning - so I never get bored.
What I do not like:
There is way too much taking it from the top. You learn one new thing and then have to take it from the top...over and over. You end up only doing the very end of the dance once. On some YBB lives, they even stop in the middle of the routine, so you never get to do the complete routine in its entirety. This just seems really poorly planned. I would prefer either breaking it up into sections ~5 mins each or just learning more steps before starting at the beginning again, and then doing it from the top twice at the very end once you've learned the whole thing. Also they always start on the same leg and there is really not a whole lot of effort towards getting the same balance on both legs.
Despite these problems, these are workouts I continue to look forward to again and again.
Good for those out of shape or absolute dance beginners with coordination.......2007-04-06
You can find videos of this on google if you look specifically for videos.
The dancing has little instruction, but I think that's because this series has an introduction dvd which I didn't rent.
Latin Flavor:
This is set in a stage with the 2 main teachers & 6 girls & 1 guy. All people were different sizes, one who is over 300 lb which is inspiring. There is one guy who plays percussion, but prerecorded music is also added in.
Intro: 1 min w/relaxing music
Meditation/Afrimations: 5 min w/relaxing music
Stretching: 5 min with all yoga (hip stretches, twisted spinal twist, triangle, wide legged fwd bend, butterfly) & stretches done fast & done up/down several times instead of holding it with FAST music. (I found this out of place, didn't feel any stretches & instead I held the poses for deeper stretch.)
Dancing: 15 min of cha-cha, samba, mereinge, chi-chi? (stepping on toes), shoulder shimmies, kinda ballet box step/grapevine backwards, hip circles & other simple 1-3 step dances. The only one I couldn't catch on the first time was what they called a "slither" looking at all the women, I still couldn't figure out what muscles were being used. The fanfare kicks were cute but silly & something they called a "mr. ed" (oy vey! cheesy) or as they called it a 1 leg kicking dancing pony.
Mat work: 7 min crunches & leg lifts w/fast music, I didn't feel any burn
Cool Down: 5 min deep beat, 1920s symphony music good poses such as pigeon, spinal twist seated pose, seated fwd bend
Meditation/Affirmation: 2 min
RIGHT AFTER is a 10 min commercial for Power 90 & then another for supplements.
I did get my heart rate up with the dancing, considering I've been mostly concentrating on toning & stretching past months & no cardio. I did have a little fun, they are enjoying themselves, but the moves I didn't like since there seemed no art/grace in the moves, just the sake of moving. The guy & some of the girls were barely moving as time went on which didn't inspire me either. The toning also wasn't long enough for me & I still need to lose a few pounds though I've been working out on/off for over 5 years & have good muscle mass, decent strength & killer flexibility.
I would recommend this to people who have 2 left feet though who already know the dances listed above or catch on quick, those who just want to move & not into perfecting grace, those with low flexibility & tone. The stretching here is only tiny bit more then the average workout dvd.
Light & Easy:
Same stage, women all different sizes including mentioned above, but no guy. Same guy playing percussion w/more prerecorded music added.
Intro: what's in dvd & people
Warm-up: 8 min w/new age chanting music, mantra for a min, several kundalini exercises using arms (done for 1 min) & moving hips back/firth & also circles & chest as well each done for only 5-10 seconds each that felt great, lifting seated butt back/forth, stretching wide legs, touching toes, modified boat pose, standing spinal twist, hip circles, etc.
Dance: 15 min w/cute fast music, no deep beat, a lot of step touches side to side, forward, back, grapevine, knee raise, squats, shoulder shimmies, shaking whole body, hip circles, torso circles & standing poses/twists.
Modified Ballet: 2 min w/fast tempo music & little bass, standing squats & plies w/ballet arms & lifting on to toes at times.
Mat work: 3 min good music, kinda industrial deep beat, using squishy ball (I did w/o) crunches while squeezing ball between thighs, reverse sit-ups, laying down knees side to side, not letting legs hit floor & holding, repeat, then hip circles & knee to chest stretching.
Cool-down: 6 min new age music, laying down spinal twist, bridge pose, cat/cow, balance on 1 knee & 1 hand when on knees, downward dog, child's pose, kundalini arm exercise to clear aura & end in seated meditation.
I liked this dvd more with the kunalini exercises, though done so little, just start enjoying it before it's done. The dancing was very boring & simple to me. This is obviously for what the title suggests, light for days you are tired or weak or for those who are out of shape or new to exercising.
I saw there is a new Yoga Booty Ballet Master series that is more advanced & will try that one day soon.
I do love Teigh McDonough from her Yoga Fusion Abs & Power videos that incorporated dance & Qi Gong with pilates & yoga. She has great body awareness & knows what stretches, poses, moves feel great in what order to keep you inspired to keep opening up your body. She studied Kundalini yoga & Anusara yoga, is a prof dancer, choreographer, movement director & I can tell she deserves it. I was disappointed with the ease of this workout & seemed more watered down version of what I love of her.
Its so fun!!.......2007-03-22
I love their enegry and its not that hard once you get the hang of it! They do go fast, but the point of buying this TO DO IT MORE THAN ONCE! And sooner, or later for some, you will get the hang of it and its a good work out! They are not cheezy at all!! Its worth the money!
Fun and fast paced--run away if you don't like fast.......2007-03-01
I really enjoy this DVD. The teachers are having so much fun that I don't care if I don't get the steps. I am the original Ms. Grace, but the attitude presented on the DVD is "just have fun, enjoy being a woman, and get in there." If I miss a step, I make up my own. I also think that once I have practiced, the fast pace will keep me from getting bored. I have now invested in seven very different DVD exercise series, and unfortunately for us less graceful exercisers, it appears speed and efficiency are the trend. At least I enjoy trying with YBB Latin Flavor.
One less star because I do prefer slower, more repetitions for floor exercises when toning.
Positive, but not for me........2007-02-25
I just bought this DVD from walmart after seeing it on the television, the infomercial for it got me really pumped for this, unfortunately as I put it in the dvd player & attempted & Yes I do mean attempted to do the work out, it was awful.
Firstly, I must say they are very positive, it IS fun & if I could do it right, it would give a very good workout, it did make me sweat & get my heart racing, & I do like how they show all different body types.
What I did NOT like.. was the fact that it all went so fast, the latin flavor disk (the one on top) ... went WAY too fast, I couldn't keep up, I couldn't figure out how to do the moves they were doing, they just said what they were going to do & then did it, there is NO way that you can just catch the moves that quickly, i'm sorry, but there isn't thats why they have dance CLASSES or LESSONS .. bc they're not that quickly learned, so basically i wasn't at all doing the right moves, i ended up feeling stupid & just quit bc i failed to follow along. The SECOND disk is a bit better I must say
but overall, i dont like it, i don't like the fast pacedness without adequate explanation of the moves being done, TEACH the moves first & THEN step it all up & go fast with it, they shouldn't just SAY what they're doing while they do it, & then bring everything together, that leaves no room to actually make sure you're doing what you should be & getting it right.
I think i may just sell it.. cause i can't return it & i won't use it.

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful & Helpful Yoga DVD.......2007-05-20
"I found this DVD very helpful. I was able to do all the movements even though I have severe arthritis. It is helping tremendously."
Wonderful, Full Body Healing in a Chair.......2007-04-27
Wonderful physical and emotional healing for anyone who is confined to a chair. Six weeks ago I found that the pain from my osteoarthritis of the hip and back had become too much for me to bear. I knew that I needed authentic healing beyond pain-killers or surgery. I am only 56 and yet my condition had degenerated to the point that I could hardly walk. I purchased John's 2-DVD set of all of chair, floor and standing routines, and I began with the chair program. Six weeks later I am doing the gentle floor and standing routines quite well, feeling stronger, more flexible and happier by the day. But even though I can do the standing routines now, I still think with fondness of the chair routines I did first. John gets a lot of breath and movement out of you in a chair! and I gained my first strength and sense of hope back through these routines. I have thought of my own deceased Mother so much as I became strong in the chair. How I wish that I had known about this DVD for her sake when she was alive. I highly recommend this DVD for anyone who feels weak, confined or hopeless because of their age or disability - even those confined to wheelchairs. Perhaps especially those confined to a chair, for you will see that through the deep breathing and small movement exercises right there within your chair, you will come to feel alive and empowered perhaps beyond what you have known for a long time.
GREAT YOGA TAPE.......2007-02-25
This is the best yoga tape I have found. I am disabled and this tape is based on gentle movements that build strength (strength tape). I use these every morning, first the stretching then strengthening. I noticed a difference after a few days. I definitely recommend this set.
A practicing chair yoga.......2007-01-09
This DVD is, by far, the best recording for aged seniors..it keeps one limber and eager to participate every day!
Great For Any Body.......2006-10-05
I used to teach Iyengar Yoga. Now, at age fifty-seven, with a genetic heart problem and Meniere's Syndrome, it's hard to do much of anything. I found this DVD here at Amazon, and absolutely love it. I still get the benefits of Yoga, without putting my body at risk. My husband, who is in good shape but under a lot of stress, is now using the DVD, too, because it doesn't add stress with a lot of confusing exercise combinations or trips to the gym.
Just a great DVD. Thanks, John!
