3 out of 5 stars A film that grows on you..........2007-07-06

It's not the car chase film I thought it was going to be, but rather a road film that morphs into a twisted love story - cinematic dysfunction at its' 70's best. Plot is somewhat satisfying, but the acting is well done and sincere. Hull and Le Mat are a good match, but don't expect the same dynamic as in "American Graffiti." Tim McIntire gives the storyline the punch in the arm it needs...
Try to rent before you buy...if you can find it. A must for Le Mat fans, but some may be disappointed in the brief showcasing of Le Mat's 68 Camaro...too nice a car and too little screen time. Definitely a film that grows on you after several viewings - a real drive-in classic.

3 out of 5 stars Good B movie car flick .......2007-01-22

Not a bad picture, but not overly good either. It played the Drive in Movie circut for about a year in the early 70's

Bobby is a guy who just cant get his life together. Not a bad guy, but not a good guy either. Rose just wants a good guy to love, and love her back and spend her life with. Bobby manages to screw up each chance he has to fall in love with her and change his life.

There is some interesting trivia about the Camaro in this film. Like the duece coupe in American Graffiti and the 55 Chevy in Two Lane Blacktop, the car is one of the central players. This car was featured in a car magazine a year or so before the movie was made. I used to have the magazine and for the life of me can't remember which one had the article. This Camaro was infact a very fast car, not just a car made to look fast for the film. I do remember that Traco Racing in the Culver City area had built the engine in this car. At that time they were building 427 aluminum big block Cameros for SCCA racing and 302 Small blocks as well. This had one of thier 302's and was sort of a street legal SCCA style car. It was indeed very fast on the Drag Strip, road racing track or street.

Another interesting aspect is the reoccuring actors Floyd Matrux uses from this film in Hollywood Knights, several years later. Watch both and you can spot the actors and the voice of the radio DJ is the same in both.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful film.......2006-06-27

I am so excited to have found this film after searching several video locations. I seem to always find what I need at amazon! Thanks!

3 out of 5 stars Has all the earmarkings of a bye-gone era in film.......2006-06-03

From reading the opinions of my fellow reviewers, I am surprised by two things - the number of other people who actually remember this film, and the number of people who remember it so fondly. As a matter of fact, my husband and I - who grew up on opposite sides of the country - both saw it when it came out in 1975, could never find anyone else besides each other (and our respective dates at the time) who saw it or even ever heard of it, and both remembered it somewhat fondly. I think because it never caught on and is therefore encased forever within the year of its release it serves as a reminder of our youth. Thus, if you are younger than about 45, I would not recommend this movie.
This movie truly has a great soundtrack and a great use of music in the action itself. For example "Locomotion" by Little Eva plays during a horrific slow-motion car accident scene. Someone else has already mentioned "Benny and the Jets".
The other thing I notice about this film, separate from my own personal nostalgia, is that it takes chances that none of the homogenized formula-driven movie studios would ever take in today's film industry. It sets out to be a cross between "Billy Jack" and "American Graffiti", and hits the mark on some points (the visual feel of the film, the soundtrack), and misses the mark on others (little characterization or depth in plot). My three star rating is therefore somewhat misleading. If you were a teenager or in your early twenties in 1975, you'll probably see this film as four stars for all the reasons I've given. If you are much younger or much older than that, you probably won't get it at all and for you it would be a two-star film. Thus, I split the difference at three stars.

4 out of 5 stars An underrated film for lovers of L.A. noir........2005-02-12

I've read the other reviews of "Aloha Bobby and Rose" and although I can see how most viewers would only react to the more obvious flaws of this film, I feel that "Aloha" is a terrific piece of contemporary film noir despite it's problems.

Try to see this film in context of the best of the B and sub-B film noirs of the '40s and '50s and you'll understand why "Aloha" deserves a second look. Like the other fine B noirs, "Aloha" is working within a formula subgenre storyline of star crossed lovers on the run whose luck finally runs out. I'm thinking of films like "Gun Crazy", "Raw Deal" and even parts of "Out of the Past" and perhaps pieces such as "Detour" and "They Live by Night". What's in common? The stories are often flawed with cliche plots and predictable turns.

But a hardcore noir fan overlooks those drawbacks as a rule, and instead looks to the more subtle aspects of the film: atmosphere, theme, and an overall stylistic approach that demonstrates the work of a filmmaker whose vision overrides the limitations of the material and the budget. So I'd like to make a case for "Aloha Bobby and Rose" being a somewhat great film, when judged by those criteria.

Visually the film has a gritty look that underscores the irony of it's LA pop culture setting rife with neon and palm trees, shiny paint jobs and a searing sun that smokes through the smoggy LA afternoon. This picture, more than most I've seen, has captured a special feel of L.A. that reminds me of what Raymond Chandler might have put on film if he had been a low-budget movie director in the early 1970s. Only a few others, such as "Straight Time", "Chinatown", "Cisco Pike" and "Night Moves" have been able to depict the city so poetically with it's dark contradictions and sense of fate and impending doom that lies just beneath the surface of the city.

The casting and performances are dead-on, and the dialogue is terrific, perfectly mirroring the laconic "gearhead" "half smart" teenagers from the '70s whose characterization seems to have become a template that has changed little in 25 years.

Unquestionably there are tremendous problems with this picture. For example, there are parts where the editing seems crude and almost thoughtlessly executed. Conversely, segments of the storyline are overlong and could have stood some sharp trimming.

But on the whole, "Aloha Bobby and Rose" is a picture very much worth watching again with a forgiving and appreciative critical eye. Give it a look and tell me what you think.
