Anyone who has only seen celebrities perform Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues--or, for that matter, anyone who hasn't seen them at all--should give themselves the present of this HBO special, which captures Ensler's own performance. Some of the monologues--on topics ranging from the word itself (and other words), hair, orgasms, and more--are cute, some are shocking, but all are grounded in Ensler's clear intelligence, sardonic wit, and her crisp and supple voice. The simplicity of the performance is augmented with interviews with other women talking about their vaginas and interviews with Ensler herself. It's amazing that even in the 21st century many women are still uncomfortable with their sex organs; this bracing, wonderful, and deeply funny performance may open things up. --Bret Fetzer
Description
The Vagina Monologues, created and performed by Eve Ensler, debuted off-off-Broadway in 1996. This controversial work soon rode a wave of national acclaim and continues to be performed in North America and around the world. It has been translated into 14 different languages and performed in over 30 different countries. Now the intimacy of Eve Ensler's original show has been lovingly brought to the screen. The Vagina Monologues captures Eve's unique performance of her work and travels beyond the stage. She explores the creative impetus behind the monologues and conducts a series of new and revealing interviews as inspiring as those that brought about the original work.
Customer Reviews:
not good.......2007-06-19
HBO should have just captured the live show in its entirety instead of filming those cheesy fourth wall breaking interstitials with the writer. I fast forwarded through 25% of the DVD and just watched the monologues.
More obnoxious than creative........2007-04-13
I found this HBO special nauseating, with each monologue worse than the previous. Ensler's presentation tried to generate enpowerment of and sensitivity to women. For me, it failed, and I just could not get past the yuckiness and nonsense of it all. The snippets of real interviews conducted that were the basis for her play and even her short interspersed commentary were much more enjoyable than the actual monologues. 2 stars for those brief portions, zero kudos for the rest.
I am far from a prude and am open to all genres of expression. However, what I found here was an bunch of extremely silly material for people who think themselves artistically progressive. Unfortunately, this makes the rest of us wanna roll our eyes and scratch our heads wondering why we bothered to waste our time to view and consider it.
funny, shocking and heartfelt.......2007-02-28
I saw this when in London with Lorretta Swit in it. I had never heard of the play before that so I had no clue what I was getting into. The house was packed to the rafters.
You know the usual I laughed I cried ? well I did as well as got angry , felt disgusted , moved but most of all educated and empowered.
this should be mandatory viewing for all women and men who actually love them.
A different kind of humor and creativity.......2007-01-17
For those who want to know...want to know about what (other) women think in the realm of sexuality, how they feel and what they say, this HBO special is more than a pleasant surprise. Because of the format in which the stories and interviews are told, The Vagina Monologues make the subject of sex, and in particular the vagina, comfortable (for the most part) to talk about. It is funny, breathtaking, and a little outrageous, but altogether worth watching if you are looking for something different! Eve Ensler is an amazing actress, and the way in which she portays her interview subjects in her monologues is hilarious. If you are extemely modest, viewing alone may be proper; if you are not, maybe you could watch it with a girl friend or your significant other. Altogether, this is worth watching not just because it is a milestone in a feminist respect, but because it is a milestone in the movement of the individual female's self-esteem about her vagina- her essence of sexuality. No, I did not become more feminist for watching this, but I was quite overtaken by some of the beautiful aspects of the female soul that are portrayed in the monolgues. Ensler touches on the subjects of self-esteem about the vagina and sex, funny personal stories, orgasm, rape, and also the amazing sacrifices that the female soul (the vagina) can give during childbirth. Ensler's purpose? To heal, to acknowledge sacrifice, and to make us love ourselves fully by reclaiming the vagina as the female soul for all of femininity.
Amazing what shock value can do for a play.......2006-06-09
All hype and nothing else, this a perfect example of a poorly written play that becomes a huge hit purely because of shock value. All you women who love this play should all ask yourself one question: what if the word "vagina" didn't appear a thousand times in the play? What if they didn't even say the word once? Would you still love this play as much as you do now? Ha, I didn't think so! If they didn't use that tired shock word over and over again, this play would have gone nowhere.
