It's not surprising that My Big Fat Greek Wedding grew more popular over the course of its theatrical release (whereas most blockbusters open big and then drop precipitously)--not only does it have believable situations and engaging characters, but these characters (particularly our romantic heroine, Toula, played by writer and performer Nia Vardalos) look like actual human beings instead of plastic movie stars. The result is the very accessible tale of Greek-American Toula (whose family sees her as over the hill at 30), who falls for a WASPy guy named Ian (John Corbett) and then has to endure the outrage, doubt, and ultimate acceptance of her deeply ethnically centered family. The actors invest their wildly stereotypical portrayals with sincerity and compassion, giving the movie an honest warmth instead of Hollywood schmaltz. But My Big Fat Greek Wedding ultimately succeeds because of Vardalos; her intelligent, down-to-earth presence and charm carry the film. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Toula Portokalos is a quiet, devoted daughter in a big, hectic, crazy Greek family. Working at her father's restaurant, "Dancing Zorba's," she hides behind a mop of mousy brown hair and thick, impenetrable glasses, keeping her family close and the world at a distance. But one day at the restaurant, she finds herself pouring coffee for a man so strikingly good-looking, that he inspires her to change her life - and the way she sees the world - forever. With a new hairdo, wardrobe, contact lenses, and most important of all, a whole new attitude, Toula steps out into the world a new woman, all ready to meet her man. Ian Miller is tall, handsome, but definitely not Greek. And whether he can handle Toula, her parents, her aunts, uncles, cousins and several centuries of Greek culture remains to be seen. But when you see the world through Toula's eyes, anything is possible!

This is one of my favorites! I could watch it over and over. I really love Johan Corbett!
Reminds me of my family!.......2007-06-21
The first time I watched this movie, I remember thinking "They remind me of MY family!". Whether you're Greek or not, you'll be sure to love this movie.
So what's this movie about? This movie revolves around the life of Toula, a Greek who is sick of his father's Greek stories and having to work in her family's Greek restaurant. When Ian makes a stop at her restaurant, Toula begins to fall for him although he doesn't quite notice her. After going back to school and getting a better job (and a much needed makeover), Ian and Toula meet again and this time, the feeling is mutual. The two fall in love and become engaged. The problem? Ian is not Greek. The rest of the movie has Toula's family trying to understand Ian and his lifestyle and ultimately making it to the couple's wedding.
So what's to like about this movie? As I said above, Toula's family reminds me so much of my family. Some of the Greek stereotypes pertain to my Portuguese family as well which makes this movie that much sweeter. Second, it's incredibly funny. From Toula's father's use of Windex to fix everything, to the entire male part of the family being named Nick, you'll be sure to find a lot of humor in this movie. Third, the storyline is sort of different. Obviously there are movies out there about engaged couples that just don't get along with their parents-in-law but this movie shows an entire family that just doesn't understand Ian.
And what's not to like? Not much. Although it's rated PG, I wouldn't let younger kids watch this movie. Besides that very minor thing, this movie is great!
When it comes to movies that you MUST watch, My Big Fat Greek Wedding is one of them.
Not just for Greeks.......2007-06-16
I didn't see this film when it was in the theaters, in spite of rave reviews. It seemed to be a pretty obvious story which didn't interest me.
Recently I picked it up at the library (for free) and, to my surprise, I found it genuinely heartwarming and entertaining.
As others have mentioned, it is sort of a re-hash of Moonstruck, and it isn't as well done. And yes be prepared for a lot of ethnic stereotypes--the loud Greeks with the garish taste as well as the uptight WASPS. And yes, we know from the opening scene what's going to happen. I think that the reason the movie overcomes these flaws is the overwhelming love in it. You can tell that it's a real story and that's what lifts it up from cliche to something genuinely touching.
The script is smart and funny. It moves fast. And the cast is first rate. To some, the idea that the very homely 30-ish girl in the restaurant would stand a chance with the superbly hunky Ian Miller (played by the irrestable John Corbett) seems impossible. But the actress is so funny, so real, and so smart, that she really does have enormous appeal.
I am always happy to see the wonderful Laine Kazan, who makes every scene a heartwarmer. The fellow who played the dad is perfect, too, as are all of the others. I particulary loved the gramma!
I recently saw Monsoon Wedding, which was also lauded and can be compared in many ways to this film. But Monsoon Wedding nowhere touched the genuineness of this work.
It's not the most artfully impressive film ever made, but, like the big fat family (including the newcomer,) it has plenty of heart...and that's worth a lot!

This is really one great movie! I've seen it before but enjoy watching it again every year or so. John Corbett is so "dreamy"! The TV sit-com would have been a big hit if Corbett was in the cast. All the family antics makes this movie a success. Everyone must see this movie at least once.
Hilarious comedy!.......2007-05-25
Oh, my gosh, this romantic comedy was absolutely fall-on-the-floor hilarious! If you are from a family with a strong ethnic background (like I am), you will find this movie hysterically funny. The at-the-time-unknown Nia Vardalos is charming as the heroine, and John Corbett is perfectly cast as her love interest. But it's the huge (and hugely funny) supporting cast that really makes this movie. Strong casting and a well-written and well-executed script make for a great movie. Don't miss this one!!

In the wake of the phenomenal success of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, it seemed an obvious choice to build a sitcom around writer-star Nia Vardalos's family life. But the sitcom was cancelled after half a seaon--which is too bad, because though My Big Fat Greek Life doesn't capture the same relaxed, storytelling rhythm of the movie, almost the entire acting ensemble returns (Andrea Martin, Michael Constantine, Lainie Kazan, Gia Carides, and Louis Mandylor; only John Corbett, due to other obligations, was ably replaced by Steve Eckholdt as Nia's non-Greek husband), and their skilled interplay makes My Big Fat Greek Life an entirely satisfying show. Most of the episodes stay strongly entrenched with family issues, playing with the contrasting tugs of family obligation and the desire for independence, all anchored by Vardalos's smart, engaging presence. --Bret Fetzer

zero stars if I could.......2007-01-04
What a huge stinking pile this show was. Don't bother with this release, just don't bother. If you get this as a gift from a friend, that person is not your friend and has no taste.
Big Stinker.......2006-07-31
I'm so happy that I borrowed this DVD from a friend instead of spending money to rent it. What a stinker.
The movie was great, but the sit-com sucks. The movie was full of funny characters, and the humor was very spontaneous. The characters didn't have to try to be funny, because they were just funny anyway. They seemed very genuine in the film, but in the pilot episode of the series, everything seemed so forced. The jokes and one-liners were poorly written and poorly delivered.
Furthermore, the chemistry between Ian and Toula in the film was very convincing; Ian was very charming and Toula was very loving. I thought that both Nia Vardalos and John Corbett did a great job. In the show, however, the replacement Ian (called "Thomas" in the show) was a total putz, I didn't like him at all, and he had almost no chemistry with Toula (or "Nia", rather). In the film, Ian was very accepting and even enthusiastic to espouse the Portokalos family traditions. But in the show, he bitches to Nia about "boundaries" and bickers with Gus about who built Stonehenge.
The only character that was almost tolerable on the show was Gus, the dad. They overdid his dialogue a bit, but he's still funny to watch.
"My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was a great movie, it was relatively inexpensive to produce and made lots of money, and people loved it. "My Big Fat Greek Life", on the other hand, is just a bad idea; the movie was a great movie and let's just leave it at that, don't corrupt its legacy with a cornball sit-com.
My Big Fat Greek Review.......2006-01-05
Lets start with I LOVED MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING! The movie transended the idea of Greekness and was so common to everyone. I thought the family looked so familier, than I realized it was MINE!
When CBS said they were going to do a weekly TV series based on WEDDING, I was thrilled and delighted!
That was the GOOD news, now the BAD news..This short lived seven episode series died a quick network death (THANK GOD). The series had so much potenial as a series. It could have been another M*A*S*H (A TV show that also started as a film) if the writing was good and kept slightly to the movie story line...IT DIDN'T and the show failed quickly!
I would have liked Nia to talk less and use more facial expressions as she did in the film. She kept running her mouth, a motor mouth..as she was very shy in the film.
This sitcom could have had more bite as a family comedy, it copied everyone else's sitcom styles and not its uniqueness which it had. Most of the supporting characters were very under used, acting as if they were part of the furniture.
On DVD, they could have given the DVD patrons a treat such as an audio commentary, promos, features, etc..alas no extras on can be found on this dvd disk..at least they couldn't give us something.
Ah, if wishes for a good show was something that could happen
Bennet Pomerantz, AUDIOWORLD
Oh no no no no no ... (shaking head in a no motion).......2005-11-12
Well this was one of the worst ideas possible. TV networks have tried to cash in on a lot of great (or even just ok) movies in the past by turning them into TV shows, and after retiring from that idea they suddenly decided to try it again after a 10+ year absence. The entire cast signed on to do this save for Chris the DJ from Northern Exposure and wow did this fail. You con only tell the same story or the same joke so many times before it gets old (I'm Greek my husband's not, my family is crazy my husband's isn't, etc.). It lacked the easy story flow that the movie had and was just another lame sitcom with canned laughter. This was a real shot in the foot for them, none were able to emerge unscathed except for Chris the DJ, who went onto another cable show because he was a little more savvy than everyone else.
It's a shame they didn't give it a chance!.......2005-11-11
I think it's a real shame they ended this so quickly. It wasn't given enough of a chance to reach its potential! I thought that it would have been a great series.

But it's the huge (and hugely funny) supporting cast that really makes this movie. Strong casting and a well-written and well-executed script make for a great movie. Don't miss this one!!

Intelligent and Humorous.......2006-04-09
It seems like it's harder and harder for the film industry to come up with something original. In many cases you can point to a film and list multiple movies in the same genre, and often the current movie is either a direct remake or a thinly veiled remake. Not so with "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
Nia Vardalos plays Toula Portokalos, a rather frumpy Greek-American. Her family is somewhat stereotypical. However, the stereotype, while extreme, is within the realm of truth. Having been involved deeply with people from other countries, I have observed that quite often they see everything in terms of their own nation. What Gus Portokalos has on his garage door is hilarious, as one example.
Toula is 30 years old, and single; a near death sentence in her Greek family where woman are expected to marry young, feed everyone, and make more Greek babies (according to Toula). While working as a "seating hostess" in her father's restaurant, she meets Ian Miller, played by John Corbett. The sparks begin to fly almost immediately. After several creative scenes, Ian and Toula finally date, and quickly grow to love each other.
Toula's family is a riot. Because her family is very large, and very close, her extended family includes dozens of members. The two characters that stood out in my mind are Michael Constantine as Gus Portokalos, and Andrea Martin (of the long-defunct SCTV) as Aunt Voula. You may recognize other actors, but virtually every scene with Aunt Voula was funny, and Gus Portokalos as the supposed head of the family was easily manipulated by the real heads of the family, the women, making many of his scenes very funny.
This movie is not the slapstick buffoonery we see in other contemporary comedies such as those by Eddie Murphy. Here the humor is the contrast between the too pure-white, upper middle class, and small family of Ian Miller and the richly patriotic, ethnically cohesive, and large family of Toula Portokalos. Toula's huge and relatively bizarre family overwhelms the Millers. For example, the Portokalos hold an outdoor barbecue on their front lawn with hundreds of people. "Whatever would the neighbors think" would be the typical reaction of many people in many middle class neighborhoods. The Portokalos interpret (or try) everything the Millers do by their own standard. Both families are clueless regarding the other and our objective view of both families give us the opportunity to find the humor in how little each knows about the other.
Ian finds Toula to be interesting. Similarly, Toula finds something about Ian interesting. Each feels that the other offers something different. That differences are multiple, in terms of lifestyle, personality and expectations. The viewer should not expect Toula to become Cinderella. She does not and can not, and Ian is not looking for Cinderella. In fact, Ian may be looking for non-Cinderella. Regardless, she is Ian's princess, and that's what truly counts.
I particularly enjoyed the ending of the movie. There is a point as the movie nears the end where we realize that while the differences between the families and the lifestyles are large, ultimately both families have common interests. For me that key moment pulled the whole movie together, explaining that the point of the movie, after highlighting the differences between the characters and their families, was that we all pretty much want and like the same or similar things. Because I was personally touched by this moment, I'll let the viewers see for themselves what that moment might be, which may be different for them.
This movie is not a wildly hilarious slapstick comedy. Instead, its humor is unabashedly ethnic-based. However, its stereotypes are not generally derogatory, any more so than those of say, "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" with Chevy Chase. But this movie will make you smile, and the touching moments will make you feel good. An intelligent movie that relies on simple story-telling, this movie deserved the accolades it received, and earns a 5-star rating.

Customer Reviews:
IT'S GREEK TO ME..........2006-11-07
This is a warmly funny, down to earth, one note comedy in which I was somewhat disappointed. The reality of it simply did not live up to its media hype. Still, I found this fairly formulaic, romantic comedy to be enjoyable, light-hearted fare to be taken at face value.
The film centers around Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos), who comes from a fiercely ethno-centric, clannish, Greek family whose Greekness is the end-all, be-all of their lives. Toula is an over thirty, plain Jane, who lives at home with her overly protective mother, Maria (Lainie Kazan), and father, Gus (Michael Constantine), as well as her brother, Nick (Louis Mandylor). She works in her family's coffee shop where she seems to be sleep-walking through life. One day a handsome man, Ian Miller (John Corbett), enters the coffee shop with a friend, and she is smitten. Shortly thereafter, Toula embarks on a life changing course.
She takes college courses. She undergoes a complete physical makeover, from the way she dresses to the way she carries herself. She even changes jobs, working at her aunt's travel agency. There, she chances to see her dream man again. They meet. They date. They fall in love. She does all this behind her family's back, as Ian is not Greek. When her family finds out, all hell breaks loose, as her parents parade a host of Greek losers for Toula in hopes that she will not break with tradition.
Needless to say, Toula and Ian stick together despite family opposition, hers and his. His family finds her family appalling. Her family finds his family strait-laced and humorless. Never the twain shall meet. Still, the marriage will go on, and Toula's family completely commandeers the wedding, as they will have it done no other way than their way, that is to say, the Greek way. There are many funny, priceless moments throughout the film. Gus, the father, is particularly funny with his belief that all words are of Greek origin and his belief that a spritz of Windex will cure anything. Maria, the mother, also has her zany moments.
Nia Vardalos, who is Greek, wrote the script, and she is right on the money. Living in New York, I have had many Greek friends over the years, and many Greeks of the older generation are as ethno-centric as those portrayed in the movie. There was a ring of truth in many of the jokes that hit home. As an actress, however, she leaves a lot to be desired. I found her to be unappealing and somewhat wooden in the role of Toula.
The film is an over-hyped, cute, one note comedy that will not prevail over time. The film was recently put to the test when it became a sit-com of the same name with the original movie cast, with the exception of John Corbett (who had his own series "Lucky"). Needless to say, the sit-com did not last out the season. One note comedies rarely do. Still, this film is worth a rental, as it will certainly provide some laughs.
