The booming popularity of "Ultimate Fighting" and all the attendant superstar DVD compilations in constant release has sparked a lot of interest for new fans to work their way backwards in the history of the "sport." The tagline on the box is, "In the Beginning There Were No Rules." Not much has changed in Ultimate Fighting since these bouts were documented in 1994--there are still no rules, and the hits, chops, body blows and blood are more real than anything that tame-in-comparison professional wrestling has to offer. Ultimate Fighting usually involves matches that pit fighters with two completely different styles in an octagonal cage. There's no corner to escape to -- no escape at all, in fact. Legends in this collection include Royce Gracie who demonstrates his own brand of Jiu-Jitsu, and Ken Shamrock, whose specialty is something called Submission Fighting. This is raw, brutal stuff, which is exactly what makes it so exciting for hardcore UFC devotees. --Ted Fry

5 out of 5 stars All good things start with a bang!.......2007-06-06

When something is about to make history and set a new standard for anything in the future, it always starts with a bang, as do most revolutions. When Dutch Savate fighter Gerard Gordeu kicks Sumo wrestler Telia Tuli in the mouth, knocking a tooth into the crowd, before punching him in the face, it was obvious the martial arts world was going to be rocked to its core.

So begins "Ultimate Fighting Championship Classics, Vol. 1", the age of the style vs. style matches that brought Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and the significance of grappling to an American audience that was used to fist fights and stunning martial arts movies.

I know I was knocked down into reality by watching this gem, and enjoyed the heck out of it. It was like the video game "Street Fighter" but for real.

Every fan of the UFC needs to watch this one at least once. Pay homage to the past as you enjoy the modern glory, the rebirth of Pankration, that is MMA/NHB

Ah, UFC 1. Thousands of fans packed into the McNichols Arena to see the age-old question answered: What happens when this style takes on this other style in an equal setting where just about anything goes?

Royce Gracie: "You wanna know what happens when anything goes? I'LL show you what happens when anything goes!"

Yes, a nation would receive a harsh on-the-spot education of what mixed martial arts was really about. And the world of fighting would never again be the same...

A couple of completely overmatched hopess cases (Tuli and Jimmerson) and some rough work from the referee, but in all, it accomplished what it was supposed to. Let the controversy begin.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Martial Arts in the US - The early days.......2006-11-06

Very interesting for the mixed martial arts fans to see how the UFC begun in the nineties. An historical document to show how the MMA phenomenon has develloped from the time when there were fewer rules and fighters from different backgrounds were trying to impose their arts.

Those purely looking for the best quality MMA fights should look for more recent UFC or Pride events.

5 out of 5 stars A Blast from the Past - UFC Numero Uno.......2006-09-15

They don't make them like they use to and this cannot be stressed more than in the short life of Mixed Martial Arts. In the days before it even had a name (prior to NHB), MMA in United States was only legal in one state and advertised as a "no rules" event. The first installment of this groundbreaking event took place in Denver 's McNichols Arena on November 12, 1993 and formatted in a 8-Man tournament scheme. With Rorion Gracie, Art Davies, and Robert Meyrowitz at the helm the UFC was born and competitive fighting would never be the same.

From the Gracie family's point-of-view a tournament like the UFC would be the ideal platform to show the world their family martial arts system that had dominated Brazil for the better of 60 years. While many consider Grandmaster Helio Gracie as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu's (or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) leader, it was his eldest son Rorion who had the vision to expand Gracie Jiu-Jitsu beyond Brazil to the United States . After setting up shop, the next question would be who from the impressive (and accomplished) stable of Gracies would represent the family in the tournament. Rickson Gracie was the family champion and most respected out of the clan, but his more aggressive style was thought of as not suitable to fully exhibit the subtleness and style Rorion wanted to portray. Young Royce was the choice and immediately many questioned if he would even last one fight. Royce was a tall and slender 176 pound young man that at first glance would not be considered to be dangerous. He was though the perfect subject for Rorion to show the effectiveness of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

Other notable fighters in the tournament included:

Savate champion Gerard Gordeau who was known in the kickboxing world as a lethal striker.

Shootfighter Ken Shamrock who was experienced in the Pancrase organization in Japan that was similar to the UFC.

Kickboxer Pat Smith had established himself as a strong full-contact karate and kickboxer.

The first fight really set the tone for the tournament as it shocked fans, commentators, and the fighters as well. Fans were puzzled and astonished, commentators were left stunned not really knowing what to say, and the fighters expecting a "tough man" type of fight were scared straight.
A fight with limited rules and no time limit really threw off fighters use to the confinements of their respected arts/competition, but what many fighters clearly did not process was any skill on the ground. Aside from Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie no other fighter really knew what to do on the ground and this would be their downfall.

After the night was over, an elated winner was asked what he would do with his winnings; he responded "...going to Disneyland ", a fitting statement considering the importance of this event.

Volume two of these classic bouts from the early and mid-'90s includes fierce matchups between UFC superstar Royce Gracie and Jason Delucia (Gracie's own form of Jiu-Jitsu vs. Delucia's Kung Fu), a rare karate/karate brawl between Johnny Rhodes and Fred Ettish, along with more bloody kickboxing, Ninjitsu, Judo, Grappling, and Muay Thai that you can shake a barbed wire-wrapped stick at. The showcase is Ultimate Fighting's distinctive "Steel Octagon," where the bodies flail like rag dolls and the blood always flows freely. The production values of this vicious collection are none too professional and feel delightfully dated. The commentary is contagiously over-the-top (with Jim Brown again in the guest commentator hot seat) especially when the violence is at its peak. That's pretty much all the time, which makes UFC for die-hard, guts-of-steel fans only. --Ted Fry

A supercharged bloodfest for mixed martial arts fight fans, but of more dubious merit as a documentary, The Smashing Machine is a blurry, noncommittal portrait of would-be American warrior Mark Kerr, a soft-spoken drug addict who performs astonishing acts of violence for big money. A former wrestler turned extreme fighter, Kerr proves a contradictory subject--a boyish, quietly restless man who resorts to no-hold-barred savagery in the ring--in this shameless, often nauseating HBO project. Over several months, director John Hyams (NYPD Blue) captures Kerr's seemingly unstoppable parade of victory in the U.S. and Japan. He also reflects the decay in Kerr's private life and highlights a dramatic turn in his fortunes after Kerr loses an important MMA match to a Russian brawler. Along the way, we meet Kerr's trainer, Mark Coleman, whose own destiny takes on ironic, unexpected importance in the end. --Tom Keogh

        Description

A sport so dangerous it was once banned in the U.S., no-holds-barred fighting is undeniably the purest form of human competition. Simple in concept and savage in execution, it is the definitive test of survival: one ring, two fighters, and no rules. In th

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Done.......2006-07-15

This documentary gives the sport of no holds barred fighting a human face. Mark Kerr is one of thousands of `ultimate fighters' that put their lives on the line for pride, money and family honor. Before I saw this film, I had seen a few of Kerr's fights and I was impressed with his ability and style. But I really had no idea about the man outside the ropes. This film presents Kerr as a brave and talented, but flawed man. And that is why it is so good, because nobody is really invincible or totally free of personal struggle. Everyone has to battle themselves as much as they battle the world. And Mark Kerr is no exception. He braved addiction and injury to come back and reclaim victory. In addition to Kerr, the film highlights Mark Coleman, who also beat the odds and won. This documentary is an excellent look at the sacrifice and commitment that goes into no holds barred fighting. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars This movie is interesting even if you dont know the story..........2006-03-09

This documentary was shot at the exact time Mark Kerr was going through a horrible period in his life. It is done somewhat low-budget so don't expect James Earl Jones doing narration but it's an epic story. Unlike others, this film isn't done in the documentary style of flashback and archived clips. The things that happen all happen as they're filming the movie.
Mark Kerr was an amazing fighter and like most of the amazing fighters in the world kinda fell into the sport. He was a wrestler and after college needed something to do for money. Putting his talents to use solved that problem.
I suggest that anyone who watches this movie watch some real Mixed Martial Arts fights beforehand. Give yourself that taste of what MMA is like and then you'll understand how much of a struggle it can be to train and compete.
P.S. It's been a while since I've seen the movie but in the bonus features, watching Bas knock out Rodrigo (i think), is probably one of the most classic shots ever.

5 out of 5 stars The Smashing Machine - The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr.......2006-02-17

This biography is well worth looking at if you're into ultimate fighting. This movie gives you an interesting perspective of the struggles and triumphs of a brutal sport. It starts with Marks first fight, the many years of triumphant wins and drug addiction. Mark Kerr is one hell of a fighter, on and of the mat. The disk also comes complete with special features. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Push comes to shove.......2005-12-27

The movie "The Smashing Machine" follows the story of MMA fighter Mark Kerr. It discusses his rise to the top of the MMA world, and his unyielding battle with his own personal demons.

Overall, the movie is interesting. However, I think it paints a really negative image of the MMA world. Mostly because they (the producers) portray the story of Kerr and Colemen, as two men who ended up in this world of MMA by mere happenstance. And that neither of them really wanted to do it, but instead that they were forced to do it because of the circumstances of their lives (Colemen and Kerr both needed money).

But the story is powerful, and Kerr gives one a glimpse into the mind of an extreme fighter. You find yourself cheering him on, hoping that he will be able to bash everyone's head in.

        Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Could have been much better.......2005-12-09

This film held my interest throughout its one and a half hours. I am not sure that it would hold the interest of someone who wasn't a fan of mixed martial arts (MMA).

Some of the elements needed for a great documentary were in the film - close, gritty footage of Mark Kerr in some of his darkest moments, access to some of the most important people in his life, footage from his training and fights - but what was missing was a good narrator or expert commentator.

The shaky camera footage, quick cuts, blood-red filters used during some of the fight scenes, heavily edited fights, and the dubbed-in cheering will not satisfy MMA fans, and will only serve to disgust and upset people who have never seen a real Pride fighting tournament.

If you are an MMA fan, you will find this film worth watching. If you are not, you should watch a few tournaments before watching this film.

UFC Classics, Vol. 3 is the UFC that changed my mind about the Gracies. Watch and you'll see why.

It was another great addition, filled with testosterone and mismatches. The first bout is scary, a 500 pound man vs. a 200 pound man. 'nuff said.

Kimo vs. Gracie... Kimo became my hero in this DVD. I thought his "religious martyr" gimmick was risky, yet hilarious. Kicking butt for the Lord. Magic!

And it seemed to work, as he pushed Gracie hard, bringing about the most disgraceful ending to a match every. It changed my mind about the Gracies. Watch and you'll see why I was immensely disappointed in someone who I respected (and still respect).

Modern fans might not appreciate it with the evolution of the sport in the modern day. But in its time, it was spectacular.

        5 out of 5 stars It's all too real........2007-03-26

Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson?
Red Sox and White Sox winning the World Series in consecutive years?
Phil Mickelson taking a third major?
The band out on the field?

Kids' stuff. You want bizarre, you want unpredictable, you want oh-my-god-what-the-hell-is-going-on...take a look at UFC 3.

All the elements were in place for a titanic Royce Gracie/Ken Shamrock rematch in the final. Opposite brackets, each with beatable, untested opponents. Both principles rested and in good health. Either they'd face each other, or one would get toppled in an incredible upset, and we've have a brand new rivalry on our hands. It had to happen. Right?

It starts out reasonably enough. Keith Hackney, a scrappy little bulldog from the mean streets of Chicago, takes on the gargantuan but immobile and clumsy Emmanuel Yarborough, with predictable results. Next, Shamrock grapples with veteran judo fighter Cristophe Leninger, who gives a valiant match. Then Canadian trash-talking pummeller Harold Howard trades punches with hometown hero Roland Payne, an action-packed slugfest with a suitably spectacular conclusion.

        And then things get weird.

No one could've predicted this. But then, isn't that the beauty of sports? Who would've thought that the script would go off the rails so suddenly. And that Steve Jennum would have to step up to save the day. (Steve who? You'll see...)

UFC was pitched as a completely real contest. In the third tournament, it was almost too much so. That's what makes it a must-see.

5 out of 5 stars True "Ultimate Fighting" Before Everyone Did Jiujitsu.......2007-02-19

Modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a hybrid sport where fighters train in both striking (usually a combination of techniques from boxing, Muay Thai, and Taekwondo) and grappling (Brazilian Jiujitsu and wrestling). A thick rulebook exists that prohibits such attacks as biting, hair pulling, eye gouging, hitting to the groan, kneeing/elbowing a "downed" opponent, etc... Even clothing is regulated, with padded gloves and mouthpieces required to minimize damage.

That, however, is not how it used to be. In the "old days" of ultimate fighting, martial artists from completely different spheres of combat would come together in no-holds barred battles of complete domination. There were no weight limits, You might see a huge sumo wrestler battle a karate master or a boxer trying to punch out a ninja. You couldn't be disqualified for biting (though you could be fined), hair-pulling was legal, and punching to the groin happened all the time. During this "iron age" of MMA, fighters battled to answer the age-old question of which martial arts style was the most powerful - and "hybrid" martial artists were almost non-existant.

UFC 3 is the epitomy of this age, and one of the best MMA tournaments you will ever watch. MMA legends like Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock are at the top of their games during this event, and matches that would NEVER happen in modern times (such as the legendary sumo vs. kenpo karate fight where the cage is broken during a sumo-slam) are common-place. While the very last match is a bit of a let-down, almost every single one before it is high-intensity combat that will make your jaw drop. If you want to see what true ultimate fighting is all about, this is THE DVD to purchase.

        5 out of 5 stars UFC 3 - The American Dream.......2007-02-09

This DVD of UFC 3 is a historically great one because it marks the first UFC event to be won by someone other than Royce Gracie but also the only 8 man tournament to be won by an alternate. The matches are your classic old school UFC brawls for the most part, with the finesse of Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie throw in there.
The fights are all good, starting with Emmanuel Yarbrough (600 lbs) vs Keith Hackney (200 lbs). This event also debuts Kimo, the first man to expose Royce's weaknesses in the octagon by pounding him so much in his match that after Royce beat him and moved in, Royce could not continue in the tournament. You will also see many entertaining personalities, which the UFC always supplied back then. Aside from Kimo and his manager, Joe Son, we also get Roland Payne who breaks bricks on his shins and Harold Howard, a Canadian Karateka who is not all their in the head.
Buy this UFC event if you are a fan of the old school UFC or just want to compare it to the events of today. They are not the most technical matches but they are still very exciting.

        3 out of 5 stars Not Great.......2006-10-01

I am a fan of 1,2 and 4. UFC 3 is a bit of a let down. Still in its' infancy, the UFC was more of a circus event then a sport. One dimensional fighters being thrown into a cheap looking octagon(buy a good latch for the door which keeps breaking open). With the exception of Royce, Shamrock and Kimo, none of the fighters on this card ever went anywhere in MMA. In fact, they all ended up with losing records. This card is weak because of the injuries. Gracie and Shamrock couldn't continue so no-name replacements took their place. Unfairly, a replacement got put in the final match without having to fight at all in any pre-lims. There is on 18 minutes of actual fighting spread over 7 matches, with a lot of time being filled by inane Jim Brown chatter. The bonus interview with Royce is less than a minute long and adds nothing to his match with Kimo. I saw this one originally live, but I still bought it anyway now that it finally got released on dvd. If you are curious about MMA, I certainly don't recommend that you start with this dvd.

This reel of highlights from Ultimate Fighting Championships, tournaments in which men enter an octagonal ring and do battle by punching, wrestling, and kicking, begins by showing rotund Tank Abbot, who has since moved on to comparatively benign environs of World Championship Wrestling, being kicked to defeat by a much smaller opponent. Those sorts of surprises abound in Ultimate Fighting. The outcome is impossible to predict in a bout that may end, as one does on this video, with a flurry of punches followed by a knee delivered to a defensive opponent's lowered face, culminating by a final kick to the side of the head of the suddenly wobbly fighter. This sort of action will no doubt horrify boxing purists, and some of it will be too brutal for the tastes of those who prefer the cartoonish violence of professional wrestling. And while most of these matches feature fights between opponents who, rather than brawling mindlessly, cagily circle each other and choose their opportunity to strike, when the action does happen, it's vicious. Many of the matches draw blood, and it's not unusual for a man to suddenly pound his opponent unconscious. If you're a fan of the novel sport of Ultimate Fighting, you'll love this, but prepared to be shocked if you're not. --Robert J. McNamara
