This 1976 adventure story set in World War II concerns a Nazi plot to kidnap Churchill from his retreat--or murder him if need be. The large, great cast and a director, John Sturges, who's been down this road of ensemble action before (The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape) make this project exciting if not as memorable as Sturges's more famous works. The weak ending doesn't help. -- Tom Keogh

Say what?.......2007-06-16
The elements are all there--a film based on a famous novel, great cast, good direction, good production values, nice location shooting. Then, smack dab in the middle of an espionage/adventure story is what was probably an unintentionally-comic performance by Larry Hagman. This dvd has been bubbling to the top of many sale bins. It's worth watching and it does hold your attention, even though the story is a tad preposterous and there are too many genre twists and turns. At several points you will ask yourself, "What is this movie trying to be?" For those seeking Larry Hagman's most over-the-top, wiggy performance, this is a don't miss.
This Eagle Had a Rough Landing.......2007-04-30
With an international all star cast, director John Sturges at the helm, and lots of antique military hardware, this movie should have been a sure fire blockbuster. Instead it comes off as cliche-driven condensed version of the book filled with short dramatic speeches and overacting. Even the Lalo Schifrin soundtrack, which was so appropriate for KELLY'S HEROES, misses the mark.
The movie summary: A heavily attrited and disgraced German paratroop unit, led by Oberst Kurt Steiner (Michael Caine), is enlisted to kidnap British Primer Minister Winston Churchhill. They are assisted by Irishman Liam Devlin and a disaffected English woman Joanna Grey. Parachuting into Great Britain the Fallschirmjager pose as Polish paratroops on maneuvers until their identity is accidentally revealed. The Germans change back into their Luftwaffe uniforms and battle two waves of US Army Rangers in an English village before the their plot is foiled.
If the story remained focused on this plot then the movie may have had a fighting chance. Unfortunately other elements of the Jack Higgens book were squeezed into the film. Devlin (Donald Southerland) has a whirlwind romance with a local English girl (Jenny Agutter) that invites trouble from her English suitor. We also find American Captain Clark (Treat Williams) with eyes for the local pastor's daughter (Judy Geeson). Back in the Channel Islands the originator of the plan, Oberst Radl (Robert Duvall), fails to realize that Reichsfuehrer Heinrich Himmler (Donald Pleasence) is using him to either garner credit for a successful operation, or as a scapegoat if the operation fails. Thrown in for good measure is a comic relief sequence with disgraced US Army Ranger Colonel Pitts, played by Larry Hagman, launching his own unauthorized attack against the Fallschirmjager to salvage his career. Mrs. Grey's (Jean Marsh) motivation for helping the Germans is never fully explained in the film.
The village battle scene is impressive and partially redeems the film, though you cannot help but question how the battle hardened German paratroops were so easily and utterly defeated. Some of the excitement early in the film is from glimpses of a Fiesler Storch STOL aircraft, a two-seater Messerschmitt 109 trainer, and a Finnish (former German) Army Sturmgeschutz on a railroad flatcar. We also see Steiner and his group dressed in German snow/woodland splinter pattern reversible parkas. We have not seen these parkas in a film since Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton wore simalar parkas in WHERE EAGLES DARE.
Despite my criticism of the movie I did buy the DVD. THE EAGLE HAS LANDED was the first war film I was able to drive to on my own with my (then) newly acquired driver's license. As such it holds a special place in my war movie collection. Even though it does not come off as well as THE GUNS OF NAVARONE, WHERE EAGLES DARE, or THE DIRTY DOZEN, there are enough good scene in the movie to make this worth adding to a film collection.
Classic.......2007-03-27
Always considered one of the classic WW movies. Seen it a dozen time, still love it. No complaints about the DVD, would love to have it remasterd in 5.1 audio.
Good Michael Caine Movie.......2007-03-21
My husband enjoys military movies and this was one he had not seen. He thought the story was well done.
Could The Germans Really Have Captured Churchill?.......2007-03-01
I've read a couple of World War II "What if" books which describe the opposite outcome of a battle. For instance, what if the Germans had fought off the invasion fleet at Normandy?, or what if the Americans had been alert and prepared when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor? This movie raises an equally compelling question; what would the British have done if Winston Churchill were captured by the Germans? This movie offers an interesting opinion.
Led by an all-star cast including Michael Caine (Kurt Steiner), Robert Duvall (Col. Radl), Donald Pleasance (Heinrich Himmler), Donald Sutherland (Liam Devlin), Larry Hagman (Col. Pitts), Treat Williams (Capt. Clark), Jenny Agutter (Molly Prior), and Jean Marsh (JoAnna Grey), this movie explores one of the greatest "What ifs" of World War II.
Steiner's paratrooper unit has been disgraced due to an incident with a female Jewish refugee. Now, instead of fighting, they are reduced to operating an MTB boat in the English Channel. However, everything is about to change, as Colonel Radl brings plans of a daring mission to Steiner; a plan to capture Winston Churchill. Steiner accepts the mission, and he, along with his paratrooper unit, are dropped near the coastal village where Churchill is to be staying.
Along with Steiner's group is Devlin, a member of the IRA who desperately hates the British. The Germans have another contact, Joanna Grey, stationed near the village.
The drop is a success, and soon, the paratroopers are moving toward their objective. However, Devlin meets Molly Prior, a local girl much younger than himself, and falls in love with her. Will this turn of events endanger the mission?
All seems to be going well, as the paratroopers, dressed in Polish uniforms, reach the village where Churchill is expected to arrive. The Germans kept their German uniforms on under the Polish ones, and this turns disasterous for them, as one of the soldiers jumps into the water to save a little girl from drowning. His Polish uniform gets torn, revealing his German uniform. Now, Steiner and his men must round up the villagers and hide them.
To make matters worse, an American Ranger unit has discovered the German force, and a firefight breaks out between the two forces. Will the Americans win, or will the Germans be successful in their attempt to capture Churchill?
I thought this was a good movie. Given that it is a fictional account, it does raise some valid questions. Would the British have continued to fight if their beloved Prime Minister had been captured? What would the Germans have done with him? Would they have killed him? As for the movie itself, I enjoyed the story very much. The acting was very good, although I was disappointed with Larry Hagman's performance.
I recommend this movie to World War II enthusiasts. What if the Germans had actually tried such a mission? What would the consequences have been for the Allies? Thank goodness we never had to find out.

Original NASA film of the Apollo missions to the moon.......2003-10-07
This DVD features four original NASA films covering the missions of Apollo 11, 13, 15, and 16, and I found the material quite interesting. A lot of people run Madacy Entertainment into the ground for putting out inferior DVDs, but I don't find this offering inferior at all. Certainly, the documentaries look grainy and old, and the sound is far from crisp, but that all comes from the fact that these are all original NASA films, and anyone who has ever watched Neil Armstrong's first step on the moon knows how bad the picture quality of these historic video recordings are. Madacy also does more than just throw the old films together for this release; included here are a clip of President Kennedy speaking about the space program, biographies of four select astronauts, mission summaries of three Gemini missions and a look at the Gemini capsule (which I admit is rather weird since this DVD covers only the Apollo missions), and a handful of NASA trivia questions.
As for the featured content, you get four quite interesting presentations adding up to a little less than two hours of material. The Eagle Has Landed covers the launch, mission, and return of Apollo 11; many of these scenes are familiar, but who can get tired of watching man first set foot on the moon? The story of Apollo 13, Houston We've Got a Problem is both fascinating and inspiring. This was the mission that almost didn't make it home, having suffered a serious problem onboard en route to the moon. The feature film Apollo 13 starring Tom Hanks brought renewed attention to this story, which truly was NASA's finest hour, but nothing beats watching the tale unfold in reality. The missions of Apollo 15 and 16 are almost forgotten these days, but these missions provided the lion's share of data that man has collected from his lunar neighbor. Apollo 15: In the Mountains of the Moon is a real treat to watch. While the astronauts went about their business in a serious, commendable manner, they also had some fun. These guys were giddy all three days they spent on the lunar service, oohing and aahing almost nonstop. In addition to putting the moon rover to use for the first time, this mission also contributed more to scientific knowledge than any other. Apollo 16: Nothing So Hidden is in some ways quite similar to the Apollo 15 story, but here we have what are by far the best shots and video of the moon's surface.
Both informative and entertaining, this collection of vintage NASA films makes for an excellent addition to any space enthusiast's DVD collection. It especially helps those of us too young to actually remember the Apollo missions to understand just how incredible, exciting, and monumental these manned missions to the moon really were.

Hamburger Hill
Because it was released less than a year after Oliver Stone's Platoon and within months of Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, this exceptionally well-made film about one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War was largely overshadowed and overlooked. It's a pity, because in some respects this is the best of the Vietnam films of the late 1980s, at least in terms of the everyday authenticity it depicts. Stripped clean of dramatically extraneous narrative, the movie opts instead for a straightforward approach to its day-by-day account of one of the war's costliest victories--a deadly siege on Hill 937 in the Ashau Valley, where soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division engaged the enemy over the course of eleven brutal assaults between May 10th and 20th, 1969. The film specifically follows the 3rd Squad, 1st Platoon, a mixture of "new guys" and battle-weary "short-timers" who fought against terrifying odds and suffered a 70% casualty rate. From first scene to last, Hamburger Hill traces the rise and fall of their battle experience, from the horror of firefights to the camaraderie of men who've faced death and survived. Racial tensions flare and subside, trusts are established, and courage emerges from unexpected places. Through it all, writer Jim Carabatsos and director John Irvin maintain a purity of focus that pays tribute to the soldier's life without promoting false patriotism or gung-ho theatrics. In addition, the film features a cast full of talented and well-known actors in the early stages of their careers, including Dylan McDermott (from the TV series The Practice) and Don Cheadle, before gaining fame in Devil in a Blue Dress and Boogie Nights. --Jeff Shannon
The Eagle Has Landed
This 1976 adventure story set in World War II concerns a Nazi plot to kidnap Churchill from his retreat--or murder him if need be. The large, great cast and a director, John Sturges, who's been down this road of ensemble action before (The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape) make this project exciting if not as memorable as Sturges's more famous works. The weak ending doesn't help. --Tom Keogh
Description
HAMBURGER HILL: Vietnam, 1969. Hill 937. 10 days. 70% casualties. Those are the facts - this is the story.
The men of Bravo Company are facing a battle that's all up hill...up Hamburger Hill. Fourteen war-weary soldiers are battling for a mud-covered mound of earth so named because it chews up soldiers like chopped meat. They are fighting for their country, their fellow soldiers and their lives. War is hell, but this is worse. HAMBURGER HILL tells it the way it was, the way it really was. It's a raw, gritty and totally unrelenting dramatic depiction of one of the fiercest battles of America's bloodiest war. Dodge the gunfire. Get caught behind enemy lines. Go into battle beside the brave young men who fought and died. Feel their desperation and futility. This happened. HAMBURGER HILL - war at its worst, men at their best.
THE EAGLE HAS LANDED: In November 1943, Heinrich Himmler (Donald Pleasance) received a simple message, "The Eagle Has Landed." It meant that a crack force of German paratroopers were safely in England, poised and ready to kidnap the Prime Minister of England, Winston Churchill. The force is under the command of Colonel Kurt Steiner (Michael Caine). All goes smoothly as the German force, disguised in Polish uniforms, is accepted by the villagers. But one of the men is killed while rescuing a little girl, and his German uniform is discovered. The entire village has to be taken hostage and hidden in the town church.
Agents and counteragents work desperately to keep the scheme alive. Steiner himself takes a dangerous gamble. He overpowers an American ranger, commandeers his jeep and uniform and drives to the mansion where Churchill is relaxing.
The action and suspense are nonstop in this World War II thriller which also stars Treat Williams, Larry Hagman, Anthony Quayle and Jean Marsh.

Some of the best of W.W.2 & Vietnam.......2004-08-23
Both of these movies are very true to what actually happened. I enjoyed them very much.
Great WW II yarn!.......2004-08-22
The Eagle Has Landed is a good movie, especially for those who like historically based action/thriller yarns. This is based on the premise of a crack SS unit landing in England dressed as Free Polish paratroopers in an attempt to kidnap Winston Churchill and return with him to Germany to broker a negotiated peace. An all star cast that is well acted and a story that moves along quite well.

Find a Better Moon Landing DVD.......2006-07-31
This documentary while informative, traces the whole space program right up until it finally gets to the Apollo 11 mission. The narration with Mr. British Accent was boring and the score with constant bass rumblings and the obligatory high-pitched harmonies was annoying.
I recommend the HBO set "From The Earth To The Moon" for a trip through the whole space program and look for a separate Apollo 11 documentary.
Excellent, but not primarily about Apollo 11.......2006-07-17
Good to excellent 90 minute history of man looking and venturing into space up to and including most of the flight of Apollo 11. However only the final 20 minutes of this documentary is devoted to Apollo 11 and the return to earth portion of the Apollo 11 mission is not covered. The rest is history of space including excellent history of Robert Goddard, Wernher von Braun, President Kennedy's Go to the Moon Speech and highlights of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs and much more. This DVD also contains a Special Feature talk titled "Remembering Apollo 11" by Michael Collins who was the Command Module pilot for the Apollo 11 mission. Did get the sense from this Apollo 11 DVD that Wernher von Braun more than any other person was responsible for man getting to the moon and really lighting the fire of the world's imagination that this dream could become a reality. The Apollo 11 name does not really fit the majority of the material in the DVD. To place yourself into the world of 1969 and get the image of the mission people living on earth at that time had would recommend as a supplement or alternative the DVDs "Nova To The Moon" which has as much coverage about Apollo 11 as this DVD does and or "Above and Beyond" which is a 10 hour series on space that has two episodes (16 & 19, about 45 minutes total) devoted to Apollo 11 that really capture much more of the Apollo 11 mission and what was going on in the world at the time.
