Truly A Wonderful Film!! Highly Recommended........2007-06-09

If you've never read the book by Alexander Dumas, The Three Musketeers is a fabulous film that you will absolutely love. Several reviewers harp on the differences between the book and movie, but the very reason for creating a movie version is that it's SUPPOSED to be different. This one is excellently filmed, directed, and of particular note are all of the amazing actors! Personally, I've been in love with Oliver Platt, one of the most underrated actors of our time, for years, and this movie is an excellent showcase for his talents. But the star is most definately Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu, at his most evil best. I very highly recommend this movie to ALL ages, as it is appropriate to watch with your entire family.

What WAS That?.......2007-06-08

I don't even know where to begin--the horrible acting, the terrible costuming, the obviously fake sets, the lack of continuity, or the cliched (and/or just plain stupid) lines? The "action and adventure" to which some have alluded is no more than a few people shooting each other or clashing swords while saying some really idiotic things; either that, or trying, and failing, to give the impression that they are truly courageous heroes. D'Artagnan looks and acts like a men's clothing model. The Musketeers are brainless wierdos. The king is a temper tantrum-throwing little kid. De Rochefort is obviously modifying his voice to make it more foreboding--but the fact that this is so obvious rather ruins the effect. And he looks like he should be in a gangster movie. Milady is definitely trying too hard. The red-haired doofus...I don't know where he came from. Well, that basically sums it up, folks.

The evil Cardinal plots to murder the young King, attempts to seduce the queen in her chambers, and plots with the English. The Three Musketeers rebel and refuse to surrender and uncover the Cardinal's plans. Perfect heros, damsils in distress, "Save the King" sword play. Great movie.

I have always loved this movie. It came in new condition in original packaging. It was delivered quickly. I plan on enjoying this movie for years to come.

Best of the best.......2007-06-13

My father took me to see these movies when they were playing at the theaters. These are truer to the Alexander Dumas classic than any other cinematic version I have seen since... and far more entertaining. While I like Charlie Sheen, Keifer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and the other actors that appeared in the Hollywoodized remake, their take on The Three Musketeers left so much to be desired. Michael York, Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, Christopher Lee, etc. gave a far more realistic feel while still providing humor and great swordplay.

I saw The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers when I was seven, loved them then, and was very impressed with the DVD set. The discs have good sound quality and lighting, both of which had been problems with previous reproductions of the films. (An outdoor night scene in a rainstorm in The Three Muskteers had been particularly bad; it is now vastly improved.)

As for the films themselves, what can be said? The acting is top notch: Heston is a fantastic, understated Richelieu, York seems to have been born to play D'Artagnan, and everyone else is cast perfectly as well. (Okay, maybe Raquel Welch isn't all that great, but when you look like that, who cares about your acting.) The action sequences are a cut above most swordfighting in movies, especially the martial arts choreography on wires that passes for swordplay in movies now. Grand, sweeping, epic, yet very good at establishing characters, both movies are musts for fans of the books. (If you have the Disney "Young Guns" version of The Three Musketeers with Sheen, Sutherland, et al, chuck it out the window or use it as a coaster. Get this one instead.)

Slapstick comedy.......2007-04-26

Warning. This movie is a parody of the book. If you where inspired by and loved the adventures of D'Artagnan in the book, do not watch this movie. I had to turn the movie off in disgust after 20 minutes. It is a goofy slapstick comedy. There is nothing wrong with comedy. But when it's based on a book with the caliber of romantic heroes such as D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis - that is a crime.

Alexander Dumas wrote two great books; The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. I encourage you to read the books instead of watching the movies.

Beautifuful customs and ambience.......2007-03-19

This is, without doubt, the best movie of the Three Musketeers available (of course, for the whole book adaptation one has to see the Four Musketeers as well: the book is very long). It is reasonably faithful to the original, and the actors are great, but one of the things I liked more about the movie(s) is the extremely detailed and careful ambience (although mainly Spanish, not French). From the laundry rooms at the palace, to the taverns, the lodgings at Messieur Bonancieux's horrible Inn, the palace of the Duke of Buckingham, etc. And the customs are also great. This movie was made with great care to this type of detail. Perhaps few pay attention to this sort of thing, after so many years of cheap Disney's scenarios and customs, but to me this is about 70% of a period movie. It is also quite funny, with gags and little details that keep you smiling or laughing. Rachel Welch accepts a role of a silly, clumsy maiden, which although unusual is done brilliantly. A must see, I think

Realistic-adventure and slapstick-comedy normally do not mix, but here they do, because there is a good story, and the film is carefully balanced so the realism brings you right back to the story after limited comedy.

This film has a fitting hero, sword fights, a couple very good songs, a little romance, and surprisingly, some good comedy.

The Ritz brothers sometimes give that silly, cross-eyed, look, that Martin Short can do, that looks so silly, you just want to slap them for looking so silly This is a fun and lively film, yet with realism that makes you wonder, if it did not really happen that way. An excellent, charming, film.

Another great version of "The Three Musketeers" that you have never heard of is "At Sword's Point- 1952" with Alan Hale Jr., Cornell Wilde, and Maureen O'Hara.

The Ritz brothers are shown in Musketeer costume on the cover, but they do not play Musketeers in the film (they play assistant cooks in a tavern). Realistic-adventure and slapstick-comedy normally do not mix, but here they do, because there is a good story, and the film is carefully balanced so the realism brings you right back to the story after limited comedy.

Good Comedy.......2001-03-05

This is really a spoof of The Three Musketeers.The Ritz Brothers are not my cup of tea.This version only follows the first half of the novel.The Ritz Brothers played lackeys.Douglas Dumbrille,Russell Hicks and John King played the Athos,Porthos and Aramis.Don Ameche did a good job as D'Artagnan.Binnie Barnes,Lionel Atwill and Miles Mander excellent in their parts Milady,Rochefort and Cardinal Richelieu.Gloria Stuart,Joseph Schildkraut,Lester Matthews ,Pauline Moore,John Carradine good in their supporting roles as Queen Anne,King Louis,Constance and Naveau Bernajoux the Cardinal's spy.Is this a faithful adaptation? No,but a good one.Alot of this version was copied from the 1935 version.The D'Artagnan abduction scene an example.Note to those who love this version Miles Mander who played Cardinal Richelieu in this version played King Louis in the more serious 1935 version.The Musketeers in this version like the 1935 were getting a little long in the tooth but the performances were good.If you really enjoyed this comical take on the classic then you would probably like the Disney 1993 version (which copied from the 1935 and 1939 versions) and two Mexican versions one with Cantinflas 1942 (not dubbed in English) and Tin Tan's 1957 version which plays on the Nostalgia Channel and is dubbed in English.The funny thing about Tin Tan's version is the costumery looks just like that of the 1948 Gene Kelly version and Milady de Winter looks like a redheaded Janet Leigh.So if you like spoofs of classics you will like this.

TRIVIA CORRECTION.......2000-01-15

Gloria Stuart, the old-lady version of Kate Winslet's character in "Titanic," plays Queen Anne in this picture. In my previous review, I had written that she plays the adorable Constance.

Swashbuckling and Silliness.......2000-01-13

A fast-paced hoot! A better example of depression-era musicals that is surprisingly faithful to the flavor and period details of the original stories by Alexandre Dumas. The three musketeers lose a drinking contest with the cooks (the Ritz Brothers) of an inn while waiting for d'Artagnan to arrive for their first duel. The cooks take their place and the adventure begins! Beyond what has been said already, the swordplay is thrilling and well-done, Binnie Barnes is ravishing as Milady, and Gloria Stuart (yes, from "Titanic") is adorable as Constance.

The great movie tradition of adapting high-toned novels into star-studded vehicles gets an airing in Warner DVD's Literary Classics Collection, a group of six such pictures. It's a grab bag, but some of this stuff is unmissable. The best film in the box might be the 1937 version of The Prisoner of Zenda, Anthony Hope's buckle-swashing tale of a commoner (Ronald Colman) impersonating a lookalike king. This David Selznick production is one of those sparkling examples of the Hollywood heyday of the thirties, in which every cylinder is firing at full speed: buoyant script, luscious black-and-white photography (by the great James Wong Howe), exuberant swordplay, wonderful villainy (take a bow, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Raymond Massey), and a lovely damsel (Madeleine Carroll). John Cromwell directed, although others chimed in. As an adventure picture, it's just about flawless. On the flip side of the disc, the 1952 remake sticks closely to the original--and the formula still works, although the zest isn't quite there. Stewart Granger steps into Colman's shoes, with Deborah Kerr and James Mason in support.

The 1948 version of The Three Musketeers is one of the lesser versions of that swashbuckler; Gene Kelly and Lana Turner leads the cast in a Technicolor-iffic but dramatically underwhelming effort. Raoul Walsh's Captain Horatio Hornblower (1950) delivers thoughtful seagoing strategies, as the British captain navigating gunships and political winds. The movie doesn't have the oomph of the usual Walsh action film, perhaps keyed instead to Gregory Peck's serious presence, but it has a gratifyingly intelligent forward motion. Plus, the Hornblower disc comes with "Captain Hareblower," a Warners cartoon with Bugs Bunny battling Yosemite Sam on the high seas.

The shipboard morality play of Melville's Billy Budd is included here, in the classic 1962 adaptation by director Peter Ustinov (who also plays Captain Vere). Terence Stamp, in his film debut, is the innocent sailor Billy, and Robert Ryan etches one of the all-time portrayals of cold-eyed cruelty as the brutal master-at-arms Claggart. A great conversation piece in the era of the repertory house, the film holds up--and a commentary track with Stamp and Steven Soderbergh provides good stuff on the actor's career start.

The quick-tempered hick is easy to rile and immediately secures duels with the best swordsmen in France, the infamous Three Musketeers, before bonding with them in a brawling fight with the Cardinal's men. Meanwhile, the conniving Cardinal plots to humiliate the Queen and gain the ear of the foppish, easily manipulated King (Adolphe Menjou).
