5 out of 5 stars A wholly different set of westerns.......2007-07-01

What makes these foreign made westerns so different from American made westerns is the grit--lots of grit. Keeping clean was not a priority or a possibility in the real West, nor is it in the so-called spaghetti film or those made in Spain or in Australia. So in that sense, the films in this pack are more realistic than Gunsmoke or Gene Autry or Roy Rogers productions. It should be noted, however, that the actors have sparkling snow capped teeth, a fact which stands out in faces that often appear as if they have been slathered with axel grease.

The plots are uncomplicated, which is similar to the American westerns. Bad guys are faced down with good guys and defeated. It's as simple as that. It's just that the good guys are a little more tarnished in the spaghetti westerns. There's little or no love interest to complicate things, and you almost always know exactly who the bad guys are by hat colors and facial hair.

In the most notable film of the lot, "They Call Me Trinity," Terrence Hill (an Italian with an Americanized name) is the best gunslinger that ever was or ever could be, and he has a shirt so sweaty and dirty that it should be put in the Smithsonian. He is so talented with a six-gun that he can shoot people behind him without looking. Honest. Along with his half-brother, an ersatz lawman, they seek to rid the un-named town of villains so that a group of religious settlers can live in peace. There's considerable comedy, to the point that this is a spoof of the western, almost a spoof of itself. The fight scene near the end turns into pure camp. There's never been a slugfest like that.

Dennis Hopper has the title role in "Mad Dog Morgan," a film made in Australia about the real 19th century bandit, Daniel Morgan. In Australia today there are historical markers to show Morgan's grave site and other places where he made his name as a murderer. The movie is a little disjointed, but it is of interest and has great scenery. Morgan's sidekick is an aborigine, sort of like Tonto to the Lone Ranger.

Anyone with an interest in western action films with a touch more of realism should have a look at this collection. It's worth the price, certainly. But art it is not.

3 out of 5 stars On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection is rated: 4.9.......2007-04-09

The majority of films in MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT's MEAN GUNS 20 MOVIE PACK are foreign-made westerns-- a tradition since the early 1960s. Most of these oaters feature American stars in principal roles, and although none here are blockbusters, they are nonetheless entertaining fare-- thus this collection is a definite keeper.

Polling numbers from a film data website currently rate the MEAN GUNS box set (on a 1 to 10 scale) at 4.9.

The following alphabetized list includes individual scores, year and country of origin (if other than USA) and main actors.

(6.1) Any Gun Can Play (Italy-1967) - Edd Byrnes/Gilbert Roland

3 out of 5 stars Good value .......2007-04-06

There are a number of pretty good westerns in this five disc collection of 20 western motion pictures, however these movies have not been digitally remastered, nor has the Mono sound been converted into digital Stereo surround sound. DTS would have been nice :)

The Italian western 'Any Gun Can Play' staring Gilbert Roland as 'Monetero', George Hilton as 'The Stranger' and Ed Byrnes as 'Clayton' is well done, coupled with being in 'real' (((wide-screen))) makes this 1967 picture nice viewing.

The 1976 movie 'Mad Dog Morgan' begins in the 1850's Australian gold fields, quickly progressing to the Aussie prison system and expanding to the Outback. This very interesting film stars Dennis Hopper of all people, along with a fine Australian cast. The untamed Australian wilderness is used as a stunning backdrop throughout the movie. 'Mad Dog Morgan' is shown in 'full screen'.

The price for this movie collection is just right!

Direct-to-video stylist Albert Pyun sets this plotless, gun-crazy frenzy to the mambo beat of Prez Prado and runs with it. Mobster Ice-T calls dozens of associates to a newly built prison the day before it's dedicated, locks them in, and pits them against one another for a prize of $10 million, which the last three survivors will split. Bleached blond Christopher Lambert is a grinning psycho having a little too much fun, while the soul of the group belongs to the craggy-faced Michael Halsey, a ruthless killer with an odd sense of purpose and a code of honor. The story is merely an excuse for unending gunplay and giddy violence and Pyun rises to the occasion, executing everything from riotous free-for-alls to elaborate chases to Western-style standoffs (complete with a haunting spaghetti Western style guitar and trumpet theme). The video titles, dingy lighting, and dusky color give away the low budget and ultimately the script doesn't make any sense, but Pyun wisely avoids the confusing plot (which he himself sometimes loses) and concentrates on his particular strength: wild, wicked, practically nonstop action driven by a restless camera and rat-a-tat editing. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good movie: No VAMPIRES.......2007-06-07

I really didnt want to comment on this film, especially since my kind have been called out earlier in these other reviews. Lambert fan. Check. B-Movie fan. Check. Mambo fan. Check.

So let me address some of the important issues first. I am so sorry its a violent film with no deep human meaning or understanding. And if that was your complaint then you better not own a copy of Hostel or any other Torture film.

Second, there isnt suppose to be an action hero in the film. If you want a meaning to the movie it is simple. Crime does not pay. In a world of crime and lawlessness eventually even your fellow criminals turn on you.

Why does Lou have his daughter at the prison? Did you watch the film. Lou is either a complete Nut Job or vengeance seeker. From the red flashbacks he either killed a child, kidnapped his own daughter and murdered her mother/father. Or he his doing what he says he is doing, trying to make good for him and his daughter.

Vampires? Vampires? you mean the guy with the fangs at the gate? Or the demon winged guy Lou sees on the building? The first guy is a bodyguard of Moon's who for some reason has custom made teeth in the shape of fangs. So what. He isnt a vampire, never even crossed my mind that way. He just fits in as a poser gang style thug. Very cyberpunkish. The "demonic image" on the roof is a hallauciantion of Lou's, similar to the boy in the hallway.

The movis is simply 90 minutes of action, set with decent music and fun editing. The characters are largely stereotypes, but no more then Spider-Man, Captain Jack Sparrow or Shreck. So relax, pop some pop corn, turn off your brain and enjoy it for what it is.

Or you can go rent Matilda.

5 out of 5 stars This movie is awesome to the MAX!.......2007-06-02

I don't know what any of these pretentious jerks are talking about. This wasn't meant to be a "great movie". It didn't set out to move you, or give you deeper insight into yourself or the world at large. This movie's purpose isn't to inspire, or to give a greater depth of understanding to the human condition... and if you watched it hoping for any of that hippie crap you are stupid.

This is an action movie. There is gratuitous violence, killing, and foul language. Of the Three things that can make a pulp movie good (Karate, Explosions, or Midieval Stuff) this movie scores a 2/3. Thats pretty good. I might be stretching it with the explosions bit, but when there is THIS much gun-fighting, I count it anyway.

There is tons of great action, even more great one liners. Christopher Lambert plays his role brilliantly, when you consider what he is supposed to be playing, and even Ice T does a good job.

If you don't like this movie, its because you are a snob, and you are expecting too much from a movie that is CLEARLY meant to entertain. If you liked this movie, it means you know what an Action movie is supposed to be about, and you are probably Hardcore as well.

2 out of 5 stars Dumb Guns...but great soundtrack.......2006-11-30

Christopher Lambert and Ice-T are supposed to be the stars here, but what little depth this movie has comes from Michael Halsey, who turns a professional killer into a sympathetic figure (and that ANYONE can earn any sympathy in this bit of video treacle is itself an achievement).

If you're not a big fan of bloodless, mindless gunplay, the only reason to buy this movie is for the soundtrack. Mambo fans will actually enoy it, as well as the Andean flute/guitar instrumental.

4 out of 5 stars Mean Guns.......2006-07-22

This movie is not for everyone. The story line is good but some parts of the movie are just to far fetched to make this a great movie. But if want something different like watching a solid 90 minutes of over a hundred people geting shot, stabbed ,and/or beaten to death. THIS IS A MUST SEE MOVIE!

4 out of 5 stars Lives up to its promise.......2006-06-02

"Mean Guns" is exactly what it promises to be: a violent gunfight fest with very little interference of a presumed plot. There are gunfights and comic relief aplenty and the action moves fast enough to keep you interested. The reviews are correct - if you are looking for an art film with clearly developed characters, this film is not for you. However, if you want a violent (albeit amazingly bloodless) shoot em up with some comic moments, this film succeeds. Put it in the same category as "The Replacement Killers" - no thinking required.

3 out of 5 stars It's a "half good / half bad"-double feature..........2002-05-25

Well, both movies are from trash-flick-director Albert Pyun, so that should be a warning enough to most of you, but "Mean Guns" really ist one of his best movies (stylishly filmed, with cool characters (Christopher Lambert is great in his role!) and dispite a stupid story good trashy fun)...

Now let's find some words about "Corrupt": "Bad, stupid and cheap" come to mind ... must I say more?

All in all I gave 3 stars: 4 for "Mean Guns", 1 for "Corrupt", 1/2 for the double-feature-DVD.
If you like Albert Pyun flicks, buy this edition, if you are not into trash-B-film - be warned...
