Based on Katherine Paterson's young-adult novel and filmed in picturesque New Zealand, Bridge to Terabithia has lessons to impart about empathy and self-expression, but the tone is never heavy-handed. Jesse (sleepy-eyed Josh Hutcherson, Zathura), a fifth-grade loner, lives in the country with his parents and four sisters, including pesky May Belle (Bailee Madison), who adores him. His strict father (Robert Patrick, The Terminator 2) works in a hardware store. Money is tight and classmates make fun of his hand-me-downs, so Jesse finds refuge in running and drawing. Everything changes when two writers and their daughter Leslie (wide-eyed AnnaSophia Robb, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) move in next door. Leslie is faster than all the boys, which initially puts Jesse off, but the two soon bond over their love of make-believe. In the forest, they find a creek that can only be crossed by rope. Leslie names the land on the other side Terabithia, where they imagine themselves rulers of the kingdom. Jesse and Leslie also connect with their unconventional music teacher, Ms. Edmonds (Zooey Deschanel, Elf), who encourages their creativity. Despite the tension at home, Jesse's personal life is finally coming together when the unthinkable happens. Will he revert to his anti-social ways or will he grow from the experience? Though aimed at all ages, pre-school students may find Terebithia's creatures frightening. For grade-school kids and up, however, there's much to savor in this smartly written, sensitively acted film. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

3 out of 5 stars Good, but shocking.......2007-07-10

My daughter and I watched this movie after seeing the promo and reading the overview. It sounded like the right level and themes for my 8 year old. We enjoyed the 1st half. The story of two kids growing in confidence through support and friendship was well developed. Then the tragedy happens.

For a kids' fantasy movie, this is perhaps one of the most shocking sequences I've seen. Think about it. In Lord of the Rings, Gandalf comes back. In ET, ET comes back from the dead and goes home. In The Neverending Story, the whole world comes back. Tragedy is lightened by redemption. The awful loss in this movie is not redeemed.

I don't criticize the movie for approaching such difficult topics. I do criticize the film's promoters for not even suggesting such tragedy in the promotion. Under the PG rating it is quite possible to do that.

As a consequence of their neglect, I have to live the memory of my daughter sobbing "she can't be dead, she won't be dead, she's just really hurt, please don't be dead".

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-07-09

I saw this movie at the theatre with my class of 10 - 12 year olds. Back at school over half admitted to crying, even though they had heard the book. I loved it.Those who attack its supposed anti-Christian theme need to get a life.

2 out of 5 stars Thank God I saw this movie as an adult.......2007-07-09

I can only imagine all the little kids in the movie theater crying their eyes out as the sweet little girl cracked her head on a rock and drowned in the river. And did they have to bring religion into it? Since she wasn't a Christian, we can only assume that she is indeed burning in hell. This movie sends out a lot of negative messages to children like, if someone is bullying you, create fake documents to publicly humiliate that person.

2 stars for the acting.

2 out of 5 stars let down.......2007-07-08

This movie is like three films in one. The fantasy part is very small and has very little to do with the main plot. Although I'm not sure what the main plot is? That we should live in an imaginary world to escape the
cruel one we really live in?
Alot of unrealistic things in this movies and I don't mean the Fantasy parts.
1. Grades K-8 in the same school?
2. A young female teacher taking a male student out alone on a saturday?
3. Josh Hutcherson, AnnaSophia Robb would never have been considered "losers" in any school I've been to.
This movie is depressing and falls short of tying all the elements together. And once again Christianity is attacked by Hollywood.
I read AnnaSophia Robb is a Christian, I'm surprised she would except the lines given to her in the scene after Church. The kids have a poor understanding of the Gospel the way they explain it.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing fantasy, jarring reality.......2007-07-08

To paraphrase the quote of a old playwright "In my youth, I loved writing tragedy, until I learned that life was quite tragic enough without my adding to it." The creators of this movie would have done well to remember that, because unlike Narnia, you will leave movie this dragged down and not lifted up. If you hold a Christian faith, you'll also wonder why the movie takes a gratuitous swipe at God and those who hold religious beliefs. You'll not leave with any real since of wonder at the fantasy world of Terabithia, because it simply has no depth. Most of the action occurs at a small public school and in a depressing, poor family's home with the stereotypical overbearing father and distracted and aloof mother. The imaginary play between the two main characters stretches the movie's credibility even further, with poor development and/or explanation. In short, if I saw this movie on broadcast television, I would channel surf right past it.

Director Eric Steel has succeeded in making one of the most morbid documentaries ever, The Bridge. Starring several deceased Golden Gate Bridge jumpers, The Bridge is a eulogy comprised of interviews with their loved ones and friends who reminisce about those who succeeded in committing suicide in the San Francisco Bay. Spliced between interview footage are shots of the bridge in all its majesty, surrounded by fog, and being enjoyed by tourists. Meant to represent The Bridge as a rounded character, one of beauty punctuated by tragedy, this film is assuredly touching for the affected families. It's an important step in the grieving process, but feels random viewed by one who didn't know these mentally disturbed citizens. As a conceptual investigation into suicidal motivations, the documentary succeeds, though midway through viewing one begins to feel like an interloper at various funerals. We hear of one woman's battle with schizophrenia, another man's death obsession, and several retellings of those who witnessed the horrendous events. Like Grey Gardens, The Bridge captivates by triggering one's love of sensationalism, but fortunately the film's sincerity undercuts any inkling of gossip column crime reporting. This tribute to suicide victims serves as an oblique tribute to The Bridge, as an honest portrayal of its history, gritty though important to remember. --Trinie Dalton

Description

The Golden Gate Bridge is an iconic structure; a symbol of San Francisco, the West, freedom - and something more, something spiritual, something words cannot describe.
The director and crew spent an entire year focusing on the Bridge. Running cameras for almost every daylight minute, they documented nearly two dozen suicides and a great many unrealized attempts. In addition, the director captured nearly 100 hours of incredibly frank, deeply personal, often heart-wrenching interviews with the families and friends of the departed, as well as with several of the attempters themselves.
THE BRIDGE is a visual and visceral journey into one of life's gravest taboos, offering glimpses into the darkest, and possibly most impenetrable corners of the human mind.

5 out of 5 stars About Suffering They Were Never Wrong, The Old Masters.......2007-07-07

_The Bridge_ was inspired by a 2003 New Yorker article called "Jumpers" by Tad Friend.

The most disturbing, and the most controversial, aspect of the film is that you witness actual suicides as they take place. Steel was able to capture nearly all the suicides that took place in 2004 by setting up cameras and letting them run. Steel then interviewed friends and family members of people who jumped. What emerges is a story about intense pain and desperation, people who felt they were somehow on the outside of life. What also emerges is a story about the rest of us who really don't want to know about such things because they bring us pain.

It's been nearly week since I saw the film, and I'm still haunted by the images, the people. I can't shake the thought that I witnessed their last act. One of them was a young man named Gene. I keep seeing him in my mind's eye, walking up and down the railing, his long black hair flying in the wind, waiting, searching, for the right moment to jump.

This, of course, is Eric Steel's intent: I'm not supposed to be able to shake the images. I'm supposed to be disturbed by them.

Watching, I thought of W.H. Auden's poem, "Musee des Beaux Arts":

About suffering they were never wrong,
The Old Masters; how well, they understood
Its human position; how it takes place
While someone else is eating or opening
a window or just walking dully along;
How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting
For the miraculous birth, there always must be
Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating
On a pond at the edge of the wood:
They never forgot
That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course
Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot
Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer's horse
Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.
In Breughel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may
Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
Water; and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.

1940

Steel wants viewers to make the connection to Auden's poem, I think. The spirit of the poem is suggested in the imagery several times. Steel shows us that suffering takes place all around us. Yet we don't notice because we have "somewhere to get to." We sail "calmly on."

If you're looking for light entertainment or factual documentary, this film is not for you. I love dark themes and thought-provoking material, and I don't think anything else I've ever seen matches the intensity of this film. _The Bridge_ will encourage viewers to think deeply about artistic and social responsibility. And the film will engage you in a little known or thought about aspect of life.

3 out of 5 stars Great in some parts, drags in others.......2007-07-04

Way too much static 'people talking to camera' to carry this movie. Overly introspective. Would have benefited from quicker pacing. For example, the section on Kevin Hines, who survived a plunge from the bridge, really begins to drag on and on long after the relevant points have been made.

'The Bridge' might have been strengthened by talking with some of the bridge workers or Coast Guard in order to round out the whole experience of Golden Gate jumpers.

On the plus side, the cinematography is great. As I understand it, the produced used off-the-street local camera talent....which says something about how fertile a place SanFran is for the arts. Also, the narrative leading up to a couple of jumpers works well....sure wish he had been able to interview Gene Sprague's mother.

Great dramatic effect created by interspersing cuts of various people which leaves you guessing which one will go over the rail.

Overall, a good movie.

5 out of 5 stars So powerful.......2007-06-27

I wasn't sure what to expect with this DVD. It is beautiful, terrifying and gut-wrenching. Seeing people end their life and listening to their friends and loved ones trying to make sense of it is a world we don't get to see into very often, nor do most of us want to. This is an amazing piece of journalism.

5 out of 5 stars A very moving and sometimes upsetting documentary........2007-06-26

As of today's date, this documentary still has no release date in Australia. I have been waiting for the U.S. DVD release as it is a film I have wanted to see after first reading about it in 2006. I watched it tonight by myself without any pre-conceptions and I have been touched, moved and brought to tears in a documentary that handles its subject matter with both taste and compassion. Suicide of any kind is never an easy subject to talk about let alone make a film about. I give Eric Steel 10 out of 10 for this very poignant work and Alex Heffes the same for his haunting piano score that weaves effortlessly throughout the film.

4 out of 5 stars Another collection..........2007-07-01

This is movie was okay. The HD graphics were up to par and the uncompressed sound is always phenomenal. The video is in widescreen, but with the format it has, it's perfect for those who don't like to have the black bars on your top and bottom screens. I was expecting more from the 'fantasy' part of the story, but rather you are left guessing if they are only imagining things or is it really happening once they cross into the other side of the woods. My conclusion is that they were only imagining a fantasy world fueled by events occurring in their lives and school on a subconscious level.

I was expecting more from the movie in terms of the storyline and the animation fantasies, but sadly the most you'll see of the land of Therabithia is at the end...everything else is quite contemporary and there isn't really a 'dreamworld' to it.

3 out of 5 stars Good HD, So-So Movie.......2007-06-28

The Blu-Ray audio/video quality was very good. The movie was alright. I feel bad for this generation of kids growing up without the truly imaginative movies we had like the Neverending Story, the Dark Crystal or Labyrinth. I watched Arthur and the Invisibles and thought it to be a much more interesting and fun movie. Save for its adult themes I think Pan's Labyrinth is a better fantasy/kid-has-to-face-reality movie.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie.......2007-06-27

This is so enjoyable; excellent scenary really comes through on Blu-ray. The acting was top notch.

4 out of 5 stars My Girl Crosses the Bridge to Terabithia to Meet Old Yeller in Oz.......2007-06-25

I'm surprised that the MPAA gave Bridge to Terabithia a PG rating....Not because I think that it should have been given a more restrictive rating, but because the MPAA is so conservative these days with movies for kids that might be "too deep" or might "make a child sad".

Bridge to Terabithia is indeed a kid's movie, with a couple of kids (Josh Hutcherson & AnnaSophia Robb) turning in a couple of moving performances. My oldest was captivated. My middle-guy thought that it as "awesome". When I asked my youngest if it was a good movie...well...I got a "no". But my youngest was definitely as captivated as my oldest. In fact, this was originally a rental for us, but we picked up the Blu-ray edition after my youngest was so upset when I returned the rental.

Here's the thing: They just don't make movies like Bridge to Terabithia for kids anymore; or, if they do, it usually gets smacked with a PG-13. But Bridge to Terabithia is no more frightening or deep than The Wizard of Oz The Wizard of Oz (Two-Disc Special Edition) , My Girl My Girl or Old Yeller Old Yeller (Vault Disney Collection) .

Bridge to Terabithia is much more about childhood issues and dealing with them than fantasy and folklore. It's also a tale of what tweens might do to have fun--use their imagination--in their spare time....They dream of a magic place where they are The King and Queen of Terabithia. (The movie is based on the 1977 children's novel of the same name by Katherine Paterson, Bridge to Terabithia .) This movie will also present that life is not always so rosy at times, so if you're the type that wants to hide that fact from your kids then you might be disappointed with Bridge to Terabithia.

In the film, one of the kids is even invited by his teacher (Zooey Deschanel) on what ultimately ends up being a private excursion to a museum; and I must say that during the scene my wife and I looked at each other and we were like, "Oh no, what's going on here?" Well...nothing....The female teacher took the young male student (who indeed clearly had a crush on the teacher) to a museum. Nothing else. It just goes to show what a different world we live in today where you (sadly) can't trust a situation like that from the days of Old Yeller where Barney Fife might show up and not arrest the teacher, but instead suggest that they all stop by the local ice cream parlor on the way home.

Bridge to Terabithia is a very good movie...a family movie...that might frighten at times; it might make a kid think at times; and it might make a kid cry here and there.

5 out of 5 stars Not what I expected but still good.......2007-06-24

When I saw the previews of this movie i thought it was goin to be an action movie like narnia and lord of the rings but when i rented it last knight i found out i was dead wrong it actually has very little action and is a very sad movie if you do not like sad movies i wouldnt reccomand it to you but otherwise it was a great movie. 5 out of 5 stars My kids LOVE Little Einsteins!.......2007-06-07

All of this series is wonderful! My children love them and they are educational to boot! Would definitely recommend the entire series.

4 out of 5 stars Good shows.......2007-05-14

My daughter loves Little Einsteins. She learns so much from watching them. The only problem with their movies, is that they are repeat shows from television and then usually 1 new episode, which after I purchased this was out on TV within a month or so. Wish they would have a new actual movie like there first one, the Huge Adventure.

4 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-05-08

My daughter learn alot on this dvd, such as counting and singing too.

5 out of 5 stars Golden Pyramid here we come!!.......2007-04-29

I have seen this episode on the Disney Channel before. Although it is not my personal favorite, I too have learned some interesting tidbits from watching all of the episodes. My daughter is only 10 months old and has been watching it since she is- 2 months old!

My husband told me that they watch TV together in bed on Saturday morning while I am at the gym, and that she seemed mesmerized. I went out and bought the DVD's and would play them for her while she was in her swimg. Sure enough, at about 3 months she was laughing at the characters!

Another amazing program by a fantastic company. My friends tease me that I listen to the videos even when Kate is not in the car!

X-Men: The Last Stand is the third installment in the popular superhero franchise, and it's an exciting one with a splash of fresh new characters. When a scientist named Warren Worthington II announces a "cure" for mutant powers, it raises an interesting philosophical question: is mutant power a disease that needs a cure, or is it a benefit that homo superior enjoys over "normal" human beings? No surprise that Magneto (Ian McKellen) and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants resist the idea that they need to be cured, and declare war on the human race. But it's a little tougher for the X-Men, led by Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Cyclops (James Marsden), and Storm (Halle Berry). If you're Rogue (Anna Paquin), for example, your power means you can't even touch your boyfriend, Iceman (Shawn Ashmore). To compound matters, someone previously thought dead has returned, and might be either friend or foe.

With director Bryan Singer having moved on to Superman Returns, the franchise passes to the hands of Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), whose best work is done in the big action sequences such as a showdown between mutant armies. But it's difficult to manage the sheer volume of characters when adding longtime comic-book stalwarts such as Beast (Kelsey Grammer) and Angel (Ben Foster), and one character in particular deserved better than an off-screen dismissal. And fans of the original Dark Phoenix comic book story might be underwhelmed by the movie's resolution. X-Men: The Last Stand is presumably the last film in the series, but the ambiguous ending leaves possibilities open. Look for the two writers most responsible for making the X-Men who they were, Stan Lee and Chris Claremont, in early cameos. --David Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Personally I was dissapointed.......2007-07-09

3 movies and you start killing everyone off already? Come on! Sorry for the spoiler, for those of you who don't know the story yet, but if you don't, save your money.

3 out of 5 stars Good special effects, terrible script.......2007-07-06

The government develops a cure for the mutant gene, which divides the mutant community with Professor X (Patrick Stewart) on one side and Magneto (Ian McKellan) on the other, each backed by their respective armies. What's good about it? There are tons of mutants expertly realized through spectacular special effects. It's great fun to see Beast (Kelsey Grammer), Colossus (Daniel Cudmore), Juggernaut (Vinnie Jones), and others in action. What's bad about it? There are tons of mutants, which means that none of the characters are well-developed. The script is a complete mess, killing off important, classic, well-established characters in off-handed ways as if they were red-shirted security men on "Star Trek." So it's fun to watch, but a deeply disappointing finale to an otherwise good series.

5 out of 5 stars I want more Xmen!!.......2007-07-04

Great movie I hope they make more Xmen movies was a tease at the end you need to make sure to see.

2 out of 5 stars X Men The Last Stand.......2007-06-27

This copy did not have all the extras associated with a DVD. The movie was good but I missed all the extra screens and stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Whose fault is it anyway?.......2007-06-18

I've watched this movie a couple of times now, and I still can't decide if I like it or not. Some complain about Halle Berry's increased role in the film. I don't understand how she couldn't have a bigger part, since Cyclops and Professor X die and Jean is a zombie most of the time. That only leaves Wolverine and Storm as the remaining members of the team!
My question has to do with the script. Which came first, the poor script or folks jumping ship, or did a bad script get even worse when key players bolted?
Marsden and Singer ran off to do Superman. Superman was good, but it wasn't great. Since the story is about Dark Phoenix, it would seem that Marsden would have had a bigger role as Cyclops in X-Men than as Lois Lane's fiance. And Singer had done the two previous very successful X-Men movies. Why would he think doing Superman would be better than XMIII? It sounds like both men knew a bad thing when they saw it and ran away as fast as they could.
And what about Patrick Stewart? Did the original story called for Xavier's death, or did Mr. Stewart want to be written out of the story? His death seemed to serve no purpose in the storyline - other than it was easier to show her evil side by killing him off as opposed to having DP destroy star systems as she did in the comic.
Of course the other possibility is that they were setting up the Wolverine movie by doing away with the X-Men......

Director David Lean's masterful 1957 realization of Pierre Boulle's novel remains a benchmark for war films, and a deeply absorbing movie by any standard--like most of Lean's canon, The Bridge on the River Kwai achieves a richness in theme, narrative, and characterization that transcends genre.

The story centers on a Japanese prison camp isolated deep in the jungles of Southeast Asia, where the remorseless Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa) has been charged with building a vitally important railway bridge. His clash of wills with a British prisoner, the charismatic Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), escalates into a duel of honor, Nicholson defying his captor's demands to win concessions for his troops. How the two officers reach a compromise, and Nicholson becomes obsessed with building that bridge, provides the story's thematic spine; the parallel movement of a team of commandos dispatched to stop the project, led by a British major (Jack Hawkins) and guided by an American escapee (William Holden), supplies the story's suspense and forward momentum.

Shot on location in Sri Lanka, Kwai moves with a careful, even deliberate pace that survivors of latter-day, high-concept blockbusters might find lulling--Lean doesn't pander to attention deficit disorders with an explosion every 15 minutes. Instead, he guides us toward the intersection of the two plots, accruing remarkable character details through extraordinary performances. Hayakawa's cruel camp commander is gradually revealed as a victim of his own sense of honor, Holden's callow opportunist proves heroic without softening his nihilistic edge, and Guinness (who won a Best Actor Oscar, one of the production's seven wins) disappears as only he can into Nicholson's brittle, duty-driven, delusional psychosis. His final glimpse of self-knowledge remains an astonishing moment--story, character, and image coalescing with explosive impact.

Like Lean's Lawrence of Arabia, The Bridge on the River Kwai has been beautifully restored and released in a highly recommended widescreen version that preserves its original aspect ratio. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Best Film Ever, Test Of Wills & Character........2007-05-06

This unique film had everything you could want except romance. Action, suspense, special effects, an intruiging story, themes, cinematography, diection, & locales. This is the story of a Japanese POW camp in Burma in World War two. Commanded by Colonel Saito {Sessue Hayakawa}, the mainly British captives are being used as slave labor for the construction of a railroad bridge that will link malaysia to Rangoon over the river Kwai. The Japanese commander's life depends on it's successful completion. Colonel Nicholson the British commander is a stickler for rules & when Saito declares that officers will work as well as enlisted men, he sites the Geneva Convention restrictions on officers doing manual labor. When they refuse to work, Saito has them thrown into ovens, metal containers that bake in the tropical sweltering heat. After much angst Saito relents since the bridge is behind schedule. There's a fine mix of camera shots from all possible angles showing the grinding heat draining the overworked & malnurished men, as well as breathtaking panoramas. Above all positives of this excellent film were the performances by all concerned. Alec Guinness as Col. nicholson was beyond "PERFECTION." He totally absorbs the characters essence & then manifests it. I can't think of any actor who deserved his/her OSCAR more. William Holden is also superlative in his scenes, as were stern Sessue Hayakawa & the enigmatic Jack Hawkins. The destruction of the bridge & train was a one shot chance done very well. I saw this film on TV as a young boy. Now seeing it again on DVD, it was as enthralling as ever. Buy it, you won't be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars The bridge on the river kwai.......2007-04-02

Classic movie and glad it finally came on DVD

5 out of 5 stars Enduring classic.......2007-03-26

This enduring classic is (loosely, very loosely) the story of the WW2 POWs used to build the Thai/Burma railroad. The larger war becomes a personal battle between 3 forces: The Japanese soldiers looking for labor led by Colonel Saito, the British soldiers looking to serve as prisoners as dictated by the Geneva Convention led by Colonel Nicholsen (Alec Guiness winning an academy award) and the commandos looking to destroy the bridge led by Naval officer Shear.

The morality (or more specifically madness) of war is adressed in the movie. The pointless nature of armed conflict reads true today, as do issues of handling prisoners. The movie's a long one, but one of the few that justifies the added time. Every piece is indeed required in this classic.

1 out of 5 stars "A benchmark for war films" ? I hardly think so!.......2007-03-19

How Amazon could rate this as a benchmark is beyond my understanding. This movie is so far removed from the reality of the episode that it is an insult to the troops who endured the events. Perhaps it would be best if Amazon relied on combat veterans to critique war movies.

5 out of 5 stars Tour de Force for William Holden.......2007-02-27

This is movie is an excellent WWII prisoner of war film. I was enamored immediately and for the entire length of this film. William Holden is perfect as an American POW caught in the middle between a mission dreamed up by his British companions and desire to sit the war out. Director David Lean is the master.

Val Kilmer stars as Lt. Col. John Patterson, a 19th-century Irish engineer drafted by Britain's railroad bosses to build a trestle bridge over an African river, thus expanding the empire a tiny bit more. In Tsavo, Patterson is instantly hailed for killing a man-eating lion that had been making life hell for native workers. But morale sinks when a pair of unstoppable big cats devour more men and destroy the project. Along comes an Ahab-like, expatriate American hunter (Michael Douglas) to help Patterson face the almost preternatural powers of the two killers. The script by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) is based on fact, though the film owes more to Spielberg (specifically to Jaws) than history. There are also suggestive echoes of Kipling and Conrad in the material and characters, and there are hints of emotional complexity and psychological nuance that make one wish this could have been a great film instead of a merely fun one. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lions DO NOT sleep at night!!!.......2007-06-29

Saw this movie from Netflix and have now decided to buy it. I've just returned from a safari to Namibia where we heard the lions roaring in the night not far from our camp. NOTHING puts the fear of God into you more than that, all that separates you from them is your puny canvas tent. Our safari guide had seen the movie as well and we talked about it that night around the fire. He is himself a lion tracker in that if his family ranch is threatened by a lion, they do track it down. When Kilmer and Douglas are sitting at night listening to the lion still roaring and laugh about it, you just know that something more is going to happen. And boy does it ever!!! The music soundtrack is great, I especially like the interaction between Kilmer and the guy who played Shaka Zulu in the mini series. ALso the innocent Scottish missionary's part is rather poignant. I don't care if it is hokey, or a typical Hollywood production, the story IS real, the lions ARE on display in the Field museum in Chicago and it evokes the feel of the African savannah perfectly.

4 out of 5 stars great.......2007-06-16

Movie was great. I would highly recommend this for any movie waycher.

5 out of 5 stars The Man-eaters (lions) of Tsavo...thrilling movie.......2007-04-28

I was merely 12 years old way back in 1950s when I first read the book: The Man-Eaters of Tsavo by Lt.Colonel J.H. Patterson, DSO. Later in life, I wished this book could be made into a movie, and my dream really came true when I purchased the DVD. This movie is based entirely on the book by English railway bridge builder, John Patterson.
Ironically, the pair of male lions as depicted in the movie was borrowed from a zoo farm in Alberta, Canada. These lions were fully mane. But in the book, John Patterson described those two lions as lean and maneless...! As factually, most lions in Tsavo of Kenya don't have the beautiful mane unlike their cousins in other parts of Africa. This is unusual, maneless male lions because only females don't spot a mane. The movie will keep you on the edge of your chair from the beginning to the end - never a dull moment. I consider this as the best thrilling movie ever made in the wilds of Africa, especially at this time when the public is conscious about nature conservation. Too bad that when the movie was made in early 1900s, surround sound was not a popular feature and therefore not included, otherwise the roars of these two persistent man-eaters in the dead of the African night would be very nighmarish in our den when we watch the movie...! Yes, these two lions did chomp more than a hundred railway workers that at one stage they were compelled to quit until the pair was finally hunted down. John finally skinned the two man-eating lions and sold their skins and bones to the field museum at Springfield, Illioness. This pair of mounted, maneless notorious man-eating lions are still there for everyone to see and contemplate.
This classic movie depicting a strange aspect of yesterday-Africa is historically true and thus highly recommended. So go for it while it is still available. Cheers...!

5 out of 5 stars Kilmers best.......2007-04-14

This movie is a very good movie. One of Val Kilmers best not to mention it is based on a true story. About two man eating lions of course there is some blood so don't let little kids watch this. A very suspensfull film a lot of good action and it is not slow either

5 out of 5 stars BEFORE DAKTARI.......2007-04-13

William Goldman, the screenwriter of THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS is a novelist who also writes for Hollywood for more than 40 years now. His most known original screenplays are those of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Special Edition), Marathon Man and Maverick. When you see the name of William Goldman on the list of credits of a film, you know for sure that there will be more in the movie than meets the eye.

Now, when I read here reviews that destroy the GHOST AND THE DARKNESS by pointing out that the lions in the film don't act like real lions, I feel sad and sorry for these reviewers. It's like hating a Picasso painting because the faces of its characters are misshappen. The characters or events pictured in a fiction movie have a life of their own that should convey the artistic vision of the director or the screenwriter. If the lions don't act like in a documentary film, it's simply because the authors of the film wanted them to be larger than life.

THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS is one of the best adventure movies I've seen in a long time. Lavishly photographed by the multi-awarded Vilmos Zsigmond, with an effective musical score by Jerry Goldsmith, the film shows the duel that opposes two highly symbolic couples. This duel quickly overshadows the subplots such as the difficulties to build a bridge in the African savanna or to maintain order in a multiethnic team. Two solitary lions, without any links with a herd, fight two men, away from their family or, for Charles Remington, without any family at all. And now you can try to figure out what the movie is really about : is it a film about the couple civilization/nature or a film dealing with some of our most ancestral fears ? or is it even about something else ? If a film can raise such questions, it surely deserves a little consideration.

A DVD for your library.

Some called it a snooze-fest, while others tearfully clutched their Kleenex. In any case, Clint Eastwood was an unusual and (as it turned out) perceptive choice to direct and costar in this lush adaptation of Robert James Waller's phenomenally bestselling novel. Meryl Streep costars as Francesca, the lonely Iowa farmer's wife who is instantly attracted to Robert (Eastwood), the photographer from National Geographic who is in the area to photograph the bridges along Iowa's rural roadways. The two fall in love while Francesca's husband and children are away at a county fair, but the story's passion and lasting appeal derive from their decision to part forever after just a few brief days of intimate connection. Superbly acted with an emphasis on quiet, graceful moments of tender revelation, the film builds to a crescendo of powerful and conflicting emotions. Like David Lean's Brief Encounter (to which it bears marked similarities), The Bridges of Madison County is destined to become one of the classic movie love stories. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2007-06-15

A very mediocre, sappy book became a terrific movie. Mr. Eastwood and Ms. Streep breathe life into their roles, making the characters people you'll care deeply about. The dilemma Ms. Streep's character has at the end of the movie and its resolution are completely believeable. There is no right answer; there is only the answer that hurts the fewest number of people. There isn't one misstep in the entire film. I can watch it over and over. It never gets old.

4 out of 5 stars Why no Widescreen version?.......2007-04-29

The movie on this DVD "has been modified to fit your TV screen." Who makes these awful decisions? Why is there no version in widescreen?

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST!.......2007-04-17

This DVD is a true classic, one of the most beautiful grown up romance stories. Each time I watch it I fall in love again!

5 out of 5 stars A love story with Passion.......2007-03-29

I read the novel couple of years back, but got a chance to view the movie recently on DVD. It was an excellent movie that followed the novel. I'm sure there are many people who identify themselves with the characters. I loved Robert Kinkaid in the novel and Clint Eastwood did justice to that role. I recommend this movie.

5 out of 5 stars To find true love at the wrong time and place..........2007-03-20

...and to perhaps never recognize you found it indeed, but until way past its time. This is what this beautiful movie is all about. Soulmates eternally searching and loosing each other in an endless sucession of human lives, happen to cross each other's path one day, in the middle of nowhere. No one expected it to happen. No one seeked for it to happen. And yet, all surroundings (including family and social conventionalisms) are bound to become mere accidents. And love fulfills itself. A love, so brief and yet so meaningful and powerful that will be forever treasured in their hearts. Like a candle that lits only as they encounter. Isn't this the stuff all tragedies, dreams, dramas and everlasting love stories are made of? This beautiful, beautiful movie perfectly showcases Clint Eastwood's uniqueness as a Director, a trademark he will carry on all the way up to masterpieces like "Mystic River" or "Million Dollar Baby". Such a deep and profound touch that reaches people's hearts. The product of a genius in the making. I loved it.

2 out of 5 stars LOOKING FOR CLUES.......2007-07-04

It has to be said up front that THE GIANT BEHEMOTH is BO-RING! It's often more fondly remembered as a better picture than what it was. It's too long for the material, it takes too long to get to the BEHEMOTH, and once we finally get to it - it disappoints. It's too stiff, too flat and too little too late (with effects repeated again and again to pad out the time) for the film when it finally arrives.

Not to say it doesn't have its moments, but they are fleeting at best (and sloppy at worst - check out the bottom left hand corner of your screen when the BEHEMOTH tips the ferry over in the Thames, the neck of BEHEMOTH comes up too far, exposing the naked metal structure underneath). THE GIANT BEHEMOTH is simply a "CSI/MONSTER procedural" film that opens with a strange occurance and then spends the rest of the film searching for, and following the clues to something which is no mystery to anyone who saw the poster, and paid for a ticket. It's a GIANT BEHEMOTH!, we see it, why can't they, and when are they going to get to it? But, having said that, it is interesting to watch what amounts to a mystery of finding, in essence, an 800 pound gorilla in a locked room from a trail of bananas. But, it's not enough to save the picture.

Commentary is included with Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett (effects men both) and while they admire the effort given to creating THE GIANT BEHEMOTH, they are not afraid to slouch back into their seats and question every choice made in making this picture. From it's slow and plodding pace, to their novel take on this film being about the "chain of command" (pushing paperwork and theories upwards to those who have the power to issue orders and (finally) take action. They rightly joke that the only authority not represented in the film is the Queen herself, whose blessing it seems was not sought when it came to radioactive monsters). Being not only effects men, but writers and directors as well, it is funny to listen to them point out all the tricks the creators of THE GIANT BEHEMOTH used to pad the film to make its running time - great stuff, and a fun commentary.

Overall, should you own a copy of THE GIANT BEHEMOTH? If you're a fan (be it mild or die hard) then, yes, your collection would not be complete (and this is coming from someone who dares to own a copy of MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL which is BO-RING! times two). Despite its flaws and plodding pace, there is some love there, and worth the space on your shelf.

Also, for DOCTOR WHO fans... there is one TARDIS in THE GIANT BEHEMOTH, see if you can spot it.

4 out of 5 stars MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER BIG BAD DINOSAUR YARN.......2005-09-03

Basically the story goes like this; a Cornish fisherman is found by his daughter covered with radiation burns. His last "word" to her on the surf is, "behemoth," a citation from the bible which we understand means some kind of monster did this to him. Eventually, England is besieged by this dinosaur which as the film unfolds is evidently the tragic by-product of careless atomic fallout in the Pacific. Ultimately, only a special torpedo fired from a two man sub in London harbor can save London and ultimately the world.

Yes, the story line is rather cliché, but there is more, much more.
Around 1960 I saw "THE GIANT BEHEMOTH" many times and each time I was genuinely enchanted and terrified by it. The premise of a dinosaur suddenly appearing and destroying a major city, London in this case, had been done before and perhaps somewhat better in "THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS. However, this was a new setting, England and ultimately London and this monster spewed radiation at anyone and anything within its sight, a take off on the germ carrying "Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" naturally, but still something new. Also, the Behemoth was invisible to radar so its movements were impossible to track as it traveled mostly underwater. This virtual invisibility caused more than a few fatalities including the venerable Doctor Sampson [Jack MacGowran] who was in a helicopter over the Thames trying to get a closer look at what no one who saw lived to tell about. Of course we had to wait an hour into this 79 minute flick to actually see the monster, but this type of invisible sneaky monster becomes visible in these old creature features incrementally which adds to both the campiness and suspense. Somehow after several failed attempts and desperate situations the monster is vanquished!

BUT .. BUT .. BUT .. As the film ends we hear on the car radio that dead fish are covering the shores of New England just as they had in England just prior to this whole thing beginning! The two scientists having just barely survived this ordeal looked at each other rather ominously, and without uttering a word we knew that they knew, that it was all about to happen again! Maybe we would not be so lucky again!?

For a long time I debated as to whether this film or the "BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS" was superior. I have recently concluded that the stories are about equal though very similar as is the acting, but the superior stop action animation by Ray Harryhausen in "The Beast" gives it a clear edge. Although Eugène Lourié Directed both films [plus Gorgo] and Willis O'Brien did some of the Special Effects for the "Giant Behemoth" there are some major visual weaknesses and much less visual air time in the "Giant Behemoth" for the featured monster. Also as I recall one pretty gritty scene where the Behemoth trashes a ferry and does leave some people dead in the water has not made it to video, having been edited out in the transfer probably because it was deleted from the TV version that played in the 1960's. Too much gore?

Well, whichever film is better is now for you to judge.

If this genre [50's style atomic creature/features] is appealing to you, this film is among the best of its kind. The film transfer is very good for a 46 year old film, and very well worth viewing. Nevertheless a DVD, preferably remastered with the lost ferry scene restored would be greatly appreciated and make a more equitable rival for "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms".

3 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GIANT, RADIOACTIVE MONSTER.......2005-06-01

Giant Behemoth, and isn't that just a bit redundant, was directed by Eugene Lourie who was no stranger when it came to films in this genre having directed the 1953 classic Beast From 20,000 Fathoms and 1958's Colossus of New York and would go on to direct Gorgo in 1961. Clearly the man liked giant monsters. Behemoth is in the latter in terms of quality behind both Gorgo and Beast from 20,000 fathoms. This creature threatens the shores of England not only with his size but also being able to emit radiation to burn people. The stop-motion animation was done by Willis O' Brien who did King Kong and was Ray harryhausen's mentor. The animation itself looks very good as you might expect but the the monster up close looks a little cheap and cheesy. At any rate the best rampages through London, even destroying London Bridge. The movie was on a very low budget and it shows but it's more laughable rather than being a detriment to the film. The performances in the film are adequate, in fact better than you might expect for a movie with such a small budget, so kudos to the mostly British cast. Not as good as many other giant, radiation-created monsters of the 1950's but still worth a view.

3 out of 5 stars Classic film, MISSING KEY SCENE THOUGH!.......2004-04-09

A Great film but shame on Warner Bros. for releasing an edited version! Film quality is good, but the FERRY SCENE where the creature attacks and sinks the ferry is MISSING! Great sequence involving people boarding a ferry for an afternoon ride, when suddenly the creature attacks. Old woman eating, little girl with doll, full ship of people become victims of the beast. Memorable last scene in this sequence showing bodies floating, burned from the creatures radioactive rays, gruesome, yet an important part of the movie, What Happened To This Scene? Too long to blame it on broken film, obviously they used an Edited print! Too bad, hopefully the eventual DVD release will be INTACT! And COMPLETE!

1 out of 5 stars "And The Lord said, Behold now.....The Behemoth".......2004-03-11

One of the last in "the giant monster from sea" genre of the 50's
"Gorgo" officially being the last in 1961 before the japan imports
came in.

The story concerns that of a mysterious radioactive force that
not only seems to wash up mountains of dead fish on england shore
but infects one man's hand & kills another. An investigation by Marine biologist uncovers the radioactivity's source from that of
the titled creature, a huge brontasaur left over from "King Kong"
who proceeds to stomp London and burn all within it's radioactive
range.

Another of my favorites from the creature feature era This film
was probably Willis O'Brien's swan song as his creation stirs the
streets of Merry old in all it's glory one would tend to think on
life had come full circle from his brontosaur of the "Lost world"
made some 30 years earlier,Unlike "The beast from 20,000 fathoms"
This film takes on a darker tone focusing more on the science and
the aftermath of radiation (showing burn victims, fishing market
slumps etc)& in addition a memorable score. Gene Evans in one of
his few goodguy roles accompanies Andre Morell as Prof. Bigford

Special effect range from a wonderful entrance by the creature
on the docks to the quickie shot of the beast's wooden head on a
makeshift raft. You wouldn't see this sequence on warner bros.vhs
version of The giant behemoth though. I wouldn't believe that the
company responsible for so many classics like "The African Queen"
& "The Roaring 20's" would be too cheap to use a 90 min tape. The
picture quality is great but I hope the dvd will be more complete
