This debut is Deee-Lite's most consistent record, and subsequently their best. By freebasing the previous three decades of pop culture, World Clique is a rush of beats, hooks, and fashion sensibilities. "Groove Is in the Heart" brings one of the best and funkiest bass lines ever to the dance floor. Lady Miss Kier establishes herself as a stylist--both vocally and visually--capable of casting some serious shade. World Clique manages a seamless merger of house beats, a trippy '60s vibe, and an over-the-top '70s funkified sound, thanks in part to DJ Towa Tei. "Good Beat" serves up what its title promises, while "Power of Love" goes one better by adding one of the strongest melodies of the band's career. By punctuating their songs with quirky bleeps and rhythmic kitsch, Deee-Lite predicted the DJ-dominated craze that would spin the latter part of the '90s into a tizzy. --Steve Gdula

Deee-Lite ful dance music.......2006-11-22
I am not a huge fan of dance music. In fact, I am not sure I have anything else in my collection that is as solidly in the dance music category as this album. My collection includes more hard rock, country music, and classical than anything approaching dance. At the same time, this is a great album and definitely one of my favorites.
Like most people, I was attracted to the album by "Groove is in the Heart." The song is snappy, fun, and really gets me moving. The more I listen to the album; however, I find it is actually one of my least favorite songs. I find I particularly like the Deee-Lite Theme, Good Beat, World Clique, Try Me On, and (surprising to me) Who Was That.
They combine zany lyrics, interesting sound effects, catchy beats, and the powerful voice of Lady Kier. While I generally find dance music monotonous and boring, this album does not stay too long on a rhythm or beat and keeps things moving along in a way that keeps me moving.
I would love to say that if you like so-and-so you will love this album but I cannot. Based upon the things that I generally like, I should hate this album but I love it. I guess the thing that I can recommend is that you listen to the album with an open mind. Chances are you will start to bop and groove in spite of yourself.
"Very Odd Indeed".......2006-07-31
Deee-lite, they of the accursed platform shoes are really a bit like seeing the past in the future. On one hand they have their ultra '90s sounds , but on the other hand they dress in huge clompy platform shoes and psychedelic trews & look as if they landed straight out of those disco dancing 1970s. But even then they are rather more interesting than the average dance rave-ups of those early '90s. For instance, take their ripping floor filler " Groove is in the heart"- its got samples & twiddly electro noises which was so necessary for the dancefloor success during those early '90s. (Thanks to the advent of the Manchester "scene"). It goes something like "Groove is in the heart (ne-na-na-na-na)/ We're going to dance/ and have some fun".But also there's a hummable melody & sense of humour about it all. Just as ( Super DJ) Dimitry says-"The three 'e's in Deee-lite stand for Enjoy!Enjoy!Enjoy!"
The rest of " World Clique" is just as jolly.Singer Lady Kier is the main attraction ,with her Neneh Cherryesque squeal ( done to particularly glass shattering effect in " Goodbeat"). Behind her pianos tinkle, saxophones honk wildly and snatches of 70's disco songs float past(courtsy Super DJ Dimitry & Jungle DJ Towa Towa).
Actually its all very glossy and done with lots of imagination(borrowing bits from those '70s). The only dissapointing bit is "Build the Bridge" which reminds you how boring dance music can be. Otherwise a swankingly fine effort.
A CD worth 16 years looking for..........2006-07-01
`World Clique' manages to avoid the bargain bin; one hit, that's it. With `Groove is in the Heart' to the bonus track `Build a Bridge'... `World Clique' is literally a dance party in a CD and holds up after the album release 16 years ago.
Dee-lite. . .Disss-apointing.......2006-05-02
I normally don't buy an album for one song, which is why I didn't buy this one earlier. However, when I heard "What Is Love?" on Fred Schneider's "Party out of Bounds" radio show, I decided to take a chance and purchase "World Clique." Bad idea. Aside from the aforementioned song and "Groove is in the Heart", this album is lame and uninspired, filled with redundant dance rhythms and forgettable melodies. Don't make the same mistake I did; save your money on a record worth listening to. If you like their one-hit-wonder song "Groove...", find a compilation album with this song on it.
Really only 1 great tune here and a few decent ones.......2006-04-01
First my biases so you know where I'm coming from:
I'm not really into the "club music" scene though I do enjoy some dance pop. While I can appreciate that the groove is "#1" in dance music, I still want lyrics with some amount of depth to them and an actual melody (which is why I avoid techno).
ITEM #1: The groove. Deee-Lite manages this in spades thanks to the use of samples, horns and other items outside of strict electronics to beef up the sound. Lady Miss Kier isn't the fiery vocalist someone like Black Box's Martha Wash is, but she's competent if not exciting.
ITEM #2: Lyrical depth. This is where most dance pop fails and in this Deee-Lite is not immune. The words to some of these are appalling and in some cases skeletal to the extreme ("What is Love?" is probably the prime example.)
ITEM #3: Melody. The tunes here for the most part tend to have a reasonable amount of melody. In fact, I'd say the music often is the best part of the package.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Far and way, the best track here is the sole chart hit "Groove is in the Heart" which pulsates with energy from front to back and brings an instant smile to my face whenever I hear the "we're going to dance..and have some FUN" sample and the memorable bass and bongo lick that introduces it. No other tune here manages as much outright soulful danceability along with nifty cameos from Bootsy Collins and rapper Q-Tip. Outside of that sparkling hit, the 2 that best stay with you are "E.S.P.", an ode to the power of the disc jockey ("Won't you listen to what the DJ's spinning?/He's tapping into just what you're feeling") and "Who Was That?", as Miss Kier ponders the identity of the trespasser who noshed some peanut butter and indulged in a bubble bath before skipping out. It's playful and would have been the logical followup single to "Groove..".
LOWS:
"What is Love?" is not so much a song as a midtempo music bed with Lady Miss Kier's wide eyed musings that love is "de-vine, de-lightful, de-gorgeous!". "World Clique" is much the same with the theme being global unity this time.
BOTTOM LINE:
This is far from indispensable to the average music listener. I'd stick with getting "Groove is in the Heart" on a good compilation personally.

A funky down-south album.......2004-02-28
I bought the album for 3 dollars and it's definitly worth that, It's a bumping album straight outta P.A. and most songs are really funky.
Best songs: COMIN HOME, OUTHERE ON THE CORNER & 25 LIGHTERS.
Underrated.......2001-10-15
This album is a must-buy. You may or may not have heard of "25 Lighters" if you weren't down South around '98, but that song just sets up the album. This is one of those albums that you can just put on, and let play all day long. If you like Lil' Keke, Fat Pat, or anyone from the Houston/Louisiana area, get this album.

Finally, another one of the many great underground rappers of Texas is comin out with a new joint. From beggining to end, this cd is no doubt, one of the best CD's to come out in a while. My favorite track, "25 Lighters," features 2 excellent Houston,Tx rappers, Fat Pat(R.I.P.) and Li'l Keke. I urge everyone who likes good underground rap, to buy this cd.
