This Rough Guide CD details the danceable and diverse music of bhangra. It was born in India's Punjab region as a rural dance, powered by piercing dhol drums, and emerged as disco/house/world music created by Indian immigrants in the United Kingdom in the '70s. It ranges from "Bhabiye N Bhabiye," written by Channi, the haunting lead singer of the bhangra supergroup Alaap, to the Safri Boys' storytelling lyrics on their teen love story "Par Linghade." Female singers like the pioneering Mohinder Kaur Bhamra with the club favorite "Gidda Pao Haan Deo" and the seductive Sangeeta with her hit "Pyar Ka Hai Bairi" highlight bhangra's modernity, while producers and DJs like Bally Sagoo on "Mera Laung Gawacha" marry subcontinental syncopations to Jamaican reggae. Labh Janjua & Panjabi MC drop a sample by hip-hop's clown prince, Busta Rhymes, on "Mundian to Bach Ke" and build a curry-flavored bridge to African American hip-hop. As salsa sprung from its Cuban son origins and linked Latin America, bhangra rhythmically reaches out to the Indian diaspora, from Hollywood to Bollywood. --Eugene Holley Jr.

The follow up to 1999's Rough Guide To Bhangra, Rough Guide To Bhangra Dance focuses on recent mutations of this flexible music genre also known as "desi beats." Originally brought to England by North Indian Punjabi immigrants and their children, bhangra mutated in cities like London and Birmingham in the 80s to reflect the new surroundings of the artists and audience. The barrel-shaped dhol drum is still at the center of the clattering bhangra sound, but the 15 tracks here range from Four Of A Kind's boy-band leanings to Veronica's modern R&B-ish grooves to the traditional-minded Daljit Mattu & Ravi Bal. The music's party vibe works surprisingly well in conjunction with the strict aesthetics of hip-hop, dancehall and dance music, and has actually been incorporated by artists in those genres (Missy Elliott being a notable example). Nonetheless, this is an excellent line-up of artists coming out of the Indian tradition looking to Western forms in search of new fusions. --Tad Hendrickson

    Album Description

From its humble beginnings as a folk dance in northwest India, the British-Asian phenomenon of bhangra has incorporated Western instruments, such as the electric guitar, bass and keyboards, and evolved into the energetic and highly popular club and dance music it is today. This album features some of the hottest bhangra beats and the funkiest names on the British-Asian scene.

5 out of 5 stars Hi! Hi! HI!.......2006-10-03

this is the music to accompany a dance craze that is going to the big urban centers in the USA right now after having been a euro- phenom. I first heard about it when I was doing a websearch on music of India, then ordered the CD. My daughter hwo lives in DC was surprised to hear that I had gotten this, and she had just been to a Bhangra event at a a club there. The tracks are danceable and really really fun. some of it has a hip hop beat but the harmonies and melodies are so wonderfully fresh that you will find yourself humming along after on ly a listen or two....

5 out of 5 stars great intro to bhangra .......2006-06-14

being born in the states to bengali parents, there isnt as much popular music thats influenced by indian culture (bad rap looping aside). mostly, we (as in first generation americans) usually have to turn to british stuff for that crossover. bhangra is, for us, what rock en español or reggetón is for latinos.... its dancable and familiar. this cd, i think, has some awesome tracks on it... there is a whole spectrum of bhangra types- from the reggae-inspired to the more 'hip-hop' flavored stuff to the calm, religious 'akheer' (which is totally my favorite). you dont have to understand punjabi to enjoy it (i mean, i dont and nor do most of my indian friends... but we connect with it even though bhangra is a regional punjabi phenomenon... then again, reggetón is supposedly a puerto rican/caribeño thing and even argentinians and spaniards can dig it). anyway, the point is this cd has a good collection of songs that is very cool regardless of your background. neat songs, a lot of indian backgrounds (with traditional instruments like the veena and harmonuim) and pulsing dhol/syth rhythms. it makes you want to get up and dance, which is exactly what bhangra is for!

5 out of 5 stars Complex, lively music for listening or dancing.......2006-05-22

I stumbled across this CD on a display rack at Borders and listened to a few minutes and then bought it. I fell in love with the complexity and liveliness of the music. Most of the tracks have complex percussion of standard 4/4 count dance music but with lots of other percussion rhythms thrown in with various instruments. I can't identify many of the instruments but I certainly enjoyed them. The singing was also excellent and sometimes quite intricate.

This music is good for driving or anytime when you want to get into a happy energetic mood. It's also great for organized dancing. Most of it will work with salsa, hustle, or west coast swing. The energy of the music encourages a lot of improvisation and messing around. It is nearly perfect dance club music.

This is fun, lively, interesting, and enjoyable music. I highly recommend it. It inspired me to rip it to mp3 at a much higher quality level than I usually do. Usual is variable @ 192 kbps. This one rated averaging @ 256.

5 out of 5 stars The Diverse sounds of East African civilization.......2006-04-19

The East African nations of Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi, Uganda and Southern Somalia were all either a part of or heavily influenced by the Swahili civilization, whose prototype emerged as an indigenous civilization as early as 100 BC.

The civilization flourished independent of foreign political domination until 1500 AD, when the combination of European Imperialism and Middle Eastern expansionists raped and pillaged the Swahili and forced them into a cycle of destruction against themselves and their neighbors inland.

Regardless, the East African spirit has perservered and found independence through unity. If you want to hear the development of such unity in the form of classical Swahili music alongside Maasai youth embracing African American culture through Hip Hop, then there is no better place to start than this compilation.

Normally, I'm not a fan of The Rough Guide to "This Oppressed Country's Music" brought to you by their exploitative oppressors, but it is difficult to find East African music outside of such compilations in the United States. Unlike Western Africans, who are arguably the most influential people in modern music (via African Americans as well as contemporary "World Music" charts), Eastern Africa has not produced the equivalents of Fela Kuti or Salif Keita.

However, this region of the world has a rich musical heritage. The ancient combination of East African musical arrangements with the traditional Afro-asiatic style that emerged with Islam is noticable on several of the songs. Like it has in most of the world, West African sensibilities have also influenced the music of the Tanzanian people.

Like Mali, whose ancient heritage has created a sophistication in their music that they lead Africa's musical creativity, the combined legacy of Tanzania's Swahili civilization and their remarkable inland people such as the Maasai can bring forth this country for the rest of the world to hear.

This collection could be described as "bellydance with twist" as every track is energetic, catchy and lusty but also chilled-out and mysterious. While the rhythm sections certainly let it all hang out, there's just a bit held back, whether in the vocals, strings or woodwinds, not unlike the way a female raks sharki (the traditional name for the genre) dancer will flaunt undulating hips and six-pack abs while veiling her face or upper body. Historically, while no family celebration or evening in a café was complete without them, women who plied this trade faced varying degrees of social ostracism. This was partly because their profession gave them a certain degree of independence, which threatened the status quo of the male-dominated cultures they hailed from. But in modern Syria, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Greece, Lebanon and other countries, these ladies are for the most part recognized as the rigorously trained, exquisitely disciplined artists they have always been. Their relationship with the musicians they work with is one of equals, an uncommonly empathetic, shared act of creation not unlike that of flamenco dancers and their bands. Perhaps this is why, while listening to the tunes, sinuous, gyrating figures continuously appear at the corner of the mind's eye, fashioning wave-like susurrations around complex syncopations, goading their collaborators to ever more feverish heights. --Christina Roden

I did not particularly enjoy this CD. I was looking for something with more variety and found there to be not enough of the gentler, more mysterious & earthy music that I personally enjoy listening to and dancing to.

4 out of 5 stars A must for beginners !.......2007-05-16

It's really difficult to find a good compilation and that one seems to be a good one! I don't buy this CD because I still have most of the tracks. But for begginers in bellydance and for people who wish to discover the different styles of the music from Middle East, it's a good choice.

"Salsa dura" isn't simply a genre of music. It's a feeling, born of a certain people in a certain time. In this case--the sounds of dancehalls and hotel ballrooms of the Bronx, Spanish Harlem and Brooklyn in the 1970's. The lively Rough Guide to Salsa Dura NYC attempts to encapsulate that energy in an hour's worth of music. A heady task, but the collection does a good job of highlighting the premiere showmen of the genre. It's being kept alive today by all the classic and contemporary artists featured on the disc. Los Soneros Del Barrio, who formed in 1999, showcase tight grooves during "Babaila;" and bandleader Eddie Palmieri, whose career spans more than half a century, offers the sublime "Lo Que Traigo Es Sabroso II." Elsewhere, Jimmy Bosch's appropriately titled "El Embajador" ("The Ambassador") commands respect; and Joe Quijano & His Conjunto Cachana do right by the standard "I Get a Kick Out of You." Horns blare, voices wail and you can practically see the twirls across the dance floor. The only quibble is a common one in the genre: a lack of female voices. Thankfully, Las Estrellas Cobo's "Don Ramon" features the confident swagger of Yousie Barbara. --Joey Guerra

      4 out of 5 stars DURAZNO SALSEANDO.......2007-06-24

This is a compilation of what I consider the dancing side of this style. Salsa Dura: the real sound that had been eclipsed by "salsa romántica" and "salsa erótica" since the '80s. ¿What`s "salsa romántica"?: romantic-pop-songs with a soft air of guaracha in the background, just to be used in TV novels. ¿And why "salsa erótica"?. ¿Because of the lyrics, meaning love and sex?. ¡¡¡Here is the erotic explossion, giles!!!. Here in the tasty rythm, in the piano riffs, in the powerful horns, in the soulful vocals and in the "descargas". Eddie Palmieri, ¡un capo!. Para gozar y bailar... ¡HARD SALSA for ever!

4 out of 5 stars Ya Wanna Dance?.......2007-04-25

Ok! So you thought that salsa was dead and gone in NYC... but you're wrong. Salsa is alive and well. This compilation cd is a great example. This release, Rough Guide to Salsa Dura NYC, more than lends itself as proof solid that you don't have to go to France or Japan to enjoy salsa. All the musicians in the cd, with perhaps the exception of the ever travelling Eddie Palmieri, regularly play in NYC. The tracks are all well chosen and lend themselves well to the dance floor. If you are new to salsa you'll pleasantly surprised, if you're already musically baptized, jump in the waters once again. Recommended

There's far more to Scottish folk than the skirl of bagpipes (although that's a part of it, and excellently represented here by John D. Burgess). Fiddle features prominently, as does song, and the ceilidh dance tradition (Tom Anderson and Aly Bain offer a stunning ceilidh set). Gaelic was the native language, and it's never died out, as a number of singers here show. Up in the Isles, it's the tradition of mouth music that lives on, and Capercaillie's Karen Matheson offers a modern version of one of those puirt-a-beul songs. Reels and jigs are also as much a part of the country as the heather, and they're here in force. But the south of Scotland has long been urban, and Ewan MacColl's "Dirty Old Town" is something of a grimy hymn to that modernity. For an introduction to music strongly influenced by the tradition, this is honestly hard to beat. --Chris Nickson

4 out of 5 stars A rough Guide To Scottish Folk.......2007-06-27

This is the first time that I have purchased any Scottish Folk Music and I must report my suprise and pleasurte gained while listening to a very professionally sung and produced album.I will certainly keep my eye out for some more of the same.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to Scottish folk music.......2005-03-07

These Rough Guide CDs make for excellent introductions to music from cultures and places all over the world. Few places offer the musical depth of tradition as Scotland, of course, and this CD features a plethora of great music blending the old with the new of that land. I should point out that I know virtually nothing about Scottish music, so I really can't do much in the way of putting the featured artists in a proper context; the best I can do is offer my impressions of the nineteen tracks in question.

There is a lot of variety packed into this 70-some minute CD; if you think Scottish music means bagpipes and more bagpipes, you know even less about it than I do. Certainly, you'll get a little bagpipe music here, but you'll also hear some fantastic guitar, fiddle, harp, pipes, whistles, and a lot of other instruments I can hardly pronounce, let alone describe adequately.

I was familiar with the name, if not the music, of one featured artist: Capercaillie, one of the most prominent Gaelic bands out there; not only is the group represented here with The Tree, their famed singer Karen Matheson contributes an impressive Gaelic tune called Rithill Aill. This brings up an obvious point: you will hear a lot more Gaelic than English vocals on this album; Gaelic truly is a more beautiful, musically emotive language; the drawback, of course, is that few of us understand any of the words. By my count, only three of these tunes feature English vocals. Silly Wizard leads the way in the English vocals department, as far as I'm concerned, with a live recording of The Queen of Argyll, my favorite track on the album. Wolfstone isn't far behind them, though, imparting a wonderfully full and busy sound to their track Heart and Soul. Then there is Dirty Old Town by the late Ewan MacColl, one of the most important and influential figures in the preservation and perpetuation of British folk music.

Mac-Talla delivers arguably the most poignant song on the album with Griogal Cridhe, a Gaelic lament and lullaby dating all the way back to 1570 (yes, 1570). Mac-Talla's Christine Primrose also offers a beautiful Gaelic song of her own, Tha M'Eudail Is M'Aighear 'S Mo Grandh (a song which probably dates back to the 18th century). Then there's the much more energetic 'S Gann Gunn Dirich Mi Chaoidh from folk revival band Ossian.

All of the remaining tracks, if I'm not mistaken, are instrumentals. I'm not a big fan of instrumentals, but there are some really impressive ones on this album, ranging from the evocative to the frenetic. You've got the haunting pipes of Rory Campbell & Malcolm Stitt, an unusually pleasing waltz from Fiddlers Five, harp-playing at its finest from Alison Kinnaird on The Crags of Ailsa/Staffa's Shore, fiddle mastery at the hands of Jonny Hardie & Gavin Marwick, and amazing reels from the likes of Tannahill Weavers, Ross Kennedy & Archie McAllister, and Aly Bain and his former teacher Tom Anderson. Whirligig blends the traditional and the modern in fine fashion with The Harper/Lady Catherine Ogle, and John D. Burgess, the "King of Highland Pipers," closes out the album with the incomparable bagpipe strains of The Swallow-Tailed Coat/Turf Lodge.

This CD represents only a tiny dip in the immense pool of Scottish music, but it definitely does do a wonderful job showcasing the variety and unique sounds of a land where music seems to be a vital if not essential part of life.

5 out of 5 stars Oh so good!.......2003-10-27

I teach K-8 music, and have found a way to play this CD in nearly all of my classes. Regardless of their tastes, ("I only listen to rap," for example) the kids can't help bopping their heads and even asking, "can we dance to this?" My own copy spent a month in my mother's car before I got her own. Although the music on this CD varies from track to track, the quality does not. I highly recommend this CD to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Way To Start.......2001-04-10

This compilation goes beyond sensational. As the title implies, the record gives a great "rough guide" or starting point to one of Europe's strongest living musical traditions. I have always loved various artist albums because of their variety, and how they allow you the opportunity to explore and hear the different styles of many performers. From the opening guitar and fiddle of Battlefield Band, through the final "drones" of John Burgess's highland pipes, you will be energized with a variety in song and dance. I have many favorites, but my top three would include: Track 7, where Rory Campbell (low whistle) and Malcolm Stitt (guitar) both from the group Deaf Shepherd play a mysterious, haunting sort of jig. Added to this, at certain intervals, is just the right amount of electronic vibrations to give it an eye-opening "eerie" feeling. On track 13, Johnny Hardie (fiddle) from Old Blind Dogs, and Gavin Marwick (fiddle, guitar and mandolin) from The Iron Horse put on a 3-part show. It begins with a "quiet" fiddle/guitar duet, which builds in velocity (but not intensity) in part two. By the time the final set arrives, you won't be able to stop the toe-tapping due to the slightly increased tempo and volume. What makes this a nice piece, is the predominant fiddle does not overshadow the other instruments, but compliments them. Track 14, makes me feel like I am being entertained in a 16th century castle. Played by twin sisters on recorders, it begins with a nicely plucked mandolin solo by Steve Lawrence (Iron Horse). He is joined by the recorders, which materializes into a sweet, melodic Renaissance aire. Then, at 1:45 into the piece, all of a sudden Steve adds percussion to the mix. This, along with a harder driven guitar surrounding the recorders, builds enough momentum (puh rum pum pum)for a rousing finish.

Again, this is a great way to start a collection of Scottish folk music, or explore new territories. It is also an exceptional value... with approximately 70 minutes of recording time.

Cumbia is one of the world's great dance grooves. It is made up of merry guitars and accordions, torrid brass, and insistent, deep-toned drums and percussion, pounding out a lopsided, strutting 4/4 rhythm with a kick like nitroglycerine. Cumbia is the result of three colliding cultures that settled in Colombia at different times. Indigenous peoples were followed by the Spanish conquistadors, who added on Moorish influences from the sack of Granada. Finally, African slaves were brought in, and they supplied both the rhythm and the means to bring it forth. From its beginnings as a courtship dance among the slave population, cumbia gradually became the soul of the entire nation. The tunes on this compilation make it easy to understand why. They were licensed from the Sonolux label and date from the '60s through the '90s. Uniformly infectious and compulsively danceable, this is an essential party album, a good time on a disc. --Christina Roden

        Album Description

The Rough Guide To Cumbia highlights the golden age of this infectious dance rhythm, exploring its folkloric roots in the rural communities of Colombia's Caribbean coast, and featuring tracks from the biggest cumbia stars.

5 out of 5 stars La Cumbia no esta herida!.......2006-02-18

This is truly an excellent cumbia collection. Every song is beautifully arranged and evokes a kind of nostalgia for this "music of the coast." If you are someone who values variety in a CD compilation, however, you might want to give the samples on this amazon website a good listen before you purchase the CD. While the cumbia songs are wonderfully pure and truly representative of this fantastic music, they do sound very similar (which isn't a surprise, of course, because this is a CD of cumbia!). If you like what you hear, then you should certainly get this disc. The music is rhythmically infectious, romantic and will definitely survive many rotations in your CD player. If you enjoy this kind of music, I also have to recommend the "Colombia" CD by Putumayo and any album by Toto La Momoposina, a fantastic Colombian singer, especially "Carmelina" and "Pacanto."

        5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......2002-07-27

I'll make it short-this is truly the best collection of authentic Cumbia out there. Well done Rough Guides! If you're interested in Latin music, you some times come upon a couple of tracks with this infectious beat and wonder where you can get more. Well, here it is! This CD has all the great Cumbia bands of the past and present. Every single track is a gem in it's self, and is guarenteed to make you dance, sing (even if you don't understand a word, like me), and feel fantastic! Buy it, you won't regret it!

        5 out of 5 stars Cumbia Perfect!.......2001-10-03

The "Rough Guide to Cumbia" CD is more than I hoped for. It is absolutely perfect. It is so good that the painter (from Colombia) who is painting our hallways rang my doorbell to ask about it. He wants a copy too. He danced out the door. These are some the older and great performers with an authenticity that is obvious. My only small complaint is the selection by Lisandro Mesa. I think he has better recordings of this song. The range of artists and forms of cumbia is extensive and, as I said, perfect.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2001-01-11

This is my second purchase of a "Rough Guide" world music cd, and both have been stellar (the other is the Hawaiian music compilation). This cd is a delightful addition to my music collection. The music is expressive, colorful, and rhythmic, without any cheesy over-production or invasive pop-culture influences. Those of you who enjoyed Buena Vista Social Club will love this! I would highly recommend this compilation to any music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of music frim Cumbia's "Golden Era".......2000-08-02

When buying the CD one realizes that this is just not another hastily-compiled Cumbia compilation. The beautiful cover art and lengthy liner notes indicate that there is some direction to the piece. The writer of the liner notes obviously knows a very good deal about cumbia in general and great songs in particular. Just about every song in here is a keeper, I especially enjoyed "La Cumbia en Azul" By Jaime Llano Gonzalez. Anyone used to traditional cumbia arrangements will be blown away by hearing his Hammond B3 ordan work. A Wonderful, democratic collection!

5 out of 5 stars Bollywood at Its Beautiful and Bombastic Best.......2007-04-27

If you're looking for a fix of Indian pop culture, this CD will definitely do the trick! "Bollywood Gold" is full of wonderfully vibrant music, all of it overflowing with powerful emotion spiced up with a healthy dash of sentimentality and melodrama. The instrumentation is good, of course, but in this genre vocals are the main thing, and so this CD features some of the classic voices of Indian film--beautiful and charismatic voices either feminine or masculine (and highly distinct in that regard) that tell a story in their own right, that are able to evoke a wide range of feelings in the listener regardless of whether the latter understands the lyrics or not. If you've seen these movies, you'll relive them here for sure. If you haven't, like me, then the enchantment of this music might trick you into thinking you have--or else inspire you to go looking for them afterwards.

As with most "Rough Guide" CDs, this one excels in giving the listener a fine range of tracks both listenable and representative, all lovingly handpicked by an expert aficionado of that specific musical form. "Bollywood Gold" comes to us courtesy of DJ Ritu, who in the liner notes does a wonderful job of introducing the different singers (Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Jolly Mukherjee, and Mahendra Kapoor) as well as giving a crash course in the social history of playback singing in Indian film, after which each track (in order) is explained in good, relevant detail (including but not limited to what movie the song comes from). All of this comes after a movingly personal reflection on what this wonderful music meant to Indian immigrant families in England, of how important it was in their lives--making this quite a bit more meaningful than the average "greatest hits" album. And, as this listener found out, some of that enthusiasm is definitely contagious.
