Album Description

The Old 97's have a rich, organic sound that effortlessly fuses roots rock, alt-country twang and pure pop sensibilities. Known for the raw intensity of their live shows and the authentic Americana-spiked punch of their recordings, the band formed in Dallas, TX, in the early `90s. Their early singles and 1994 indie debut disc, Hitchhike To Rhome led to a trio of critically acclaimed and crowd-pleasing albums for Elektra, beginning with 1997's stellar Too Far To Care and running through 2001's Satellite Rides.

4 out of 5 stars I'm sick of the old 97's.......2007-07-06

Bought this for my husband and he absolutely loves it. I'm sick of hearing this everytime we get into the car but he enjoys it so.

Highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars This is the Best of the Old 97's.......2006-07-23

If you have ever heard an Old 97's song, and have liked that Alt/Country/Rock sound. This CD is a good choice. My personal favorite song is,"TimeBomb". The songs are well written and performed. Its a different kind of music to listen to. But it is something to check out if you've never tried it. I don't know how anyone can listen to Top 40, other than 12 year old girls! So if you appreciate good solid music, this is something to check out.

4 out of 5 stars More of a 'Great Sampler' than a 'Greatest Hits' Collection.......2006-07-18

I've been a fan of Old 97's for a while now, so it's easy for me to recommend "Hit By a Train: The Best of Old 97's." The only problem I'm having is trying to figure out exactly why this is considered a "best of." Quite frankly, each of their albums stand quite well on their own, and in many ways equals the overall quality of this collection. There are a few songs here that I personally would not have included, ("their rendition of "El Paso", for instance), while there are plenty of songs from each studio album whose inclusion would have been easily justified ("Wreck Your Life"'s "W-I-F-E" and "The Other Shoe," and "Too Far to Care"'s "Streets Where I'm From", for instance). Nevertheless, "Hit By a Train" is an entertaining listen from start to finish. In that sense, this is more of a sampler than a collection of their best hits.
Miller has a tendency toward song-title puns that don't do justice to the songs themselves ("Cryin' Drunk," "Crash on the Barrelhead" - not included here), but this only points out his self-consciously clever way with a phrase. The band has obviously mastered the two-step `train beat' (3 tracks here) and the hard-bouncing "Texas shuffle" (which accounts for eight of the CD's eighteen tracks), but it's Miller's lyrics that keep you coming back for more, even after repeated listens. Miller's albums as a solo artist certainly hold up well, but it's his work with Old 97's that is most effective, which is why this collection works as well as it does. How can you not love an album containing "Barrier Reef," "Lonely Holiday," "Jagged" and "Victoria," all on the same disk? "Hit By a Train" encapsulates some of the band's best moments, and hardcore fans of the band will want this if only for the non-album tracks (the above-mentioned "El Paso" and "Cryin' Drunk"), but casual fans would do well to continue exploring their catalog further. A- Tom Ryan

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Retrospective.......2006-06-25

If you like Uncle Tupelo, Whiskeytown or Ryan Adams or just great country tinged rock, youll love the Old 97's, although if you like any of the above you probably already know the Old 97's. Rhett Millers's songwriting is great. He has that lyrical ability that writers like Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson and later on Ben folds have, which is to be completely funny and sarcastic in a profound and ironic way and he writes killer melodies with great hooks. Like any great songwriter he has a great band. ken, murray and philip are great. The old 97's are one of the most consistent bands around, if you like one cd youll probably like them all. This is definetly worth picking up. Even if you dont like country you might still like them, they have as much of a Replacements, Stones, Costello influence as they do The Byrds or Gram Parsons. My only complaint was that this Best of didnt contain the songs Big Brown Eyes, Wish the Worst or Wont be Home.

5 out of 5 stars A Foolproof Plan.......2006-06-23

Buy this cd. You will love some of the tracks intensely. Then, go buy the original cd's those tracks appeared on. Soon you will love those cd's and every song on this one (except maybe 1 or 2) and you will have to own the entire Old 97's catalog. Maybe it costs you around $100 total. But it will give you years of intense listening pleasure. It's the best deal ever. Plus you can catch them playing a show and even though you know all the songs by heart, they will still make you smile ear to ear. Trust me.

If you're really head over heals after all that, get Rhett's solo stuff. You'll like that as well. And if you're a metro-sexual type, be sure to get his latest release "the believer" because you will like the picture on the cover.

5 out of 5 stars Repackaged New Year's Concert 1984 with VPO, etc........2005-02-23

If I'm not mistaken, most of the pieces were recorded originally live during a 1984 New Year's Concert conducted by Lorin Maazel with the Vienna Philharmonic playing in its grand concert hall, the Musikverein. Maazel and the Vienna Philharmonic have had a longstanding relationship dating from the 1960's, and without question, this CD does rank among my favorite New Year's Concert performances (However, the most mesmerizing ones I've heard have been those with the late Carlos Kleiber and Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting.) for the superb quality of the Vienna Philharmonic's playing. Maazel leads the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in some of the most popular works composed by the Strauss family, most notably Johann II Strauss' Tales from the Vienna Woods Waltz, Emperor Waltz, Pizzicato Polka, Blue Danube Waltz and his father's Radetzky March, which traditionally closes out the annual New Year's Concert. Fans of the Strauss family, Vienna Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel, will not be disappointed with this excellent two CD compilation.

5 out of 5 stars I am glad I bought this one.......2003-04-25

I listen to this cd to relax and it is so soothing. It starts with The blue Danube, which is my favorite. But the rest of the songs do not disapoint.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music as usual.......2002-10-08

This is great recording,
I enjoy listening to it
veru much. This is a
compilation of all the
favorite waltzes by
the Strauss family, that
one might hear at a
New Year's eve concert
of the Vienna Philharmonic...
All waltzes and Polkas are
favorites of audiences everywhere
in the world...

5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2001-10-29

Who else knows Strauss better than Viennese? I attest that no other orchestra in the world plays Strauss better than the Vienna Philharmonic. Their light sound is exactly what the composer wanted, and it really makes other clumsy, heavy attempts by some other orchestras like Berlin and Chicago seem pathetic.

As far as the content of these CDs go, they are fantastic. They have every waltz, march, and polko of Strauss II that you could possibly want, as well as a nice addition of "Radetzky March" by the composer's father. If you are looking for a Johann Strauss Jr. CD, get this one!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing truly Amazing.......2000-05-09

This 2 CD is amazing. It is great for plane rides and other things. I always listen to it at work. Allmost every song on this CD is beautiful and graceful. The blue danube is a classic and my personal favorite song on this album. Some of the songs are okay but none are bad. Overall this is an amazing 2 CD collection and it is worth every cent of your money . . .

5 out of 5 stars D Train in a toyota.......2006-08-10

I can recall that in the early eighties i experienced D Train in a corolla. The sound realy emerged through the 5 watts blaupunkt speakers all the way through Bergen and Schoorl. I still cannot hear high tones. Have a nice day.

5 out of 5 stars D train was A+ in rockin' parties.......2003-12-20

This group rocked the clubs from the years 1981-1983 (my early college years). You're the one for me, Keep on, Music, and Something on your mind made folks get on the floor.

5 out of 5 stars All the "D" TRAIN you'll ever need.......2003-07-21

"D" TRAIN was a bad mutha (shut my mouth)! All of those post-disco,R&B hits are here. "You're The One For Me" (it's remixed but it still has some of that original flavor so you won't lose the vibe from back in the day),"Something's On Your Mind","Walk On By","Keep On" and more will get you on the dance floor without any delay. All 10 songs I believe are from his Prelude Records days...wishing this greatest hits set was only on vinyl to mix the hell out of every song!

4 out of 5 stars There's more to D Train than meets the eye..........2003-06-14

Perhaps because Hubert Eaves III's productions were always on the cutting edge, James "D-Train" Williams was never recognized as agreat soulsinger. His ultra-soulful, full-of-conviction and strong and powerful yet sensitive vocals do place him in the same league as legendary R&B singers like Teddy Pendergrass, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye. "Thank You", Something's On Your Mind", "Walk On By" and "Keep On" all prove this.

5 out of 5 stars James D-Train Williams.......2001-03-14

5 out of 5 stars Not all original members, but still very good.......2007-06-18

Ok, typically I will slam bands for using the original name and not having the key players on board and I was prepared to do that here, but this is not bad at all. Yes, Ricky Medlocke is not on board and yes he was the primary force behind Blackfoot. They do have the original bass player (Greg T Walker) and second guitarist (Charlie Hargrett) on hand though, so that's 1/2 of the band and I guess if Skynyrd can still use that name with only 2 of the original members out of 6 or 7 on board, Blackfoot can do the same. With that said, we have not one but two other guitar players/singers: Jay Johnson, who worked with Rossington-Collins and did the Skynyrd Tribute Tour, and Bobby Barth, who has extensive experience in the music business and was the mastermind behind the band Axe. Both capably contribute vocals and guitars. As a matter of fact, Barth handles the lower register vocals and Jay the upper register vocals and that are easily able to handle the range that Ricky had on the original Blackfoot material. Having both of them play guitar only adds to the fuller sound not unlike Skynyrd, Outlaws and Molly Hatchet. Bottom line is, you can approach this as a new spin on an old band that is very good or you can stay rooted in the past and run this down since Ricky is no longer involved. For the people who do that, you're really missing out as this performance is very energetic and captures some great old music. Everything is taken from the trilogy of "Strikes/Tomcattin'/Marauder" with the exception of two songs---and some of this material, I don't think Blackfoot ever played live back in the day, so it's very nice to hear some of the old album faves. Being an old-school Blackfoot fan, I recommend even though Ricky is not involved.

5 out of 5 stars rockin cd and dvd .......2007-06-12

I urge everyone to buy the cd/dvd combo! It is a great concert and Blackfoot is back! No need for Ricky Medlocke any more

3 out of 5 stars NO RICKY BUT STILL ROCKIN'.......2007-06-10

Ricky was, is the best front man in all of rock -n -roll. the best. To bad he is not allowed the stretch his rock n roll wings in lynyrd skynyrd. THIS CD DVD COMBO IS STILL REALLY GOOD. THE sound could be better. but the picture quality of the dvd is great!!! DO NOT miss the new molly hatchet cd, dvd combo. flirtin with disaster live. it is great. If you are a fan of southern rock, both of these cd, dvd combos are a must buy.

Fueled largely by the endlessly inventive original music chronicled in the first anthology from the hit TV series Alias, young composer Michael Giacchino's rising star quickly led to big screen success via his first major feature, Pixar's computer animated superhero spoof The Incredibles. The composer's rich eclecticism -- one that spans a thumping, contemporary techno club-savvy and brassy winks at the 60's spy-jazz canon in just its opening few cuts -- is still one of the major delights on this collection of cues from Alias' second season. But its second half largely becomes a more dramatically focused, if no less creatively restless showcase for Giacchino's orchestral writing, the scale of which impressively belies its small-screen origins. Its rare to hear TV music that evokes everything from the brooding classicism of Samuel Barber and Bernard Herrmann to more contemporary scoring masters like Goldsmith and Barry -- with a forceful nod to mixmeister Paul Oakenfold in the bargain -- but it's all here on this compelling showcase for one of film music's most promising new stars. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Featuring more of composer Michael Giacchino's thrilling music — sort of a techno/club take on the classic James Bond sound. Giacchino's scores for the episodes of Season 2 received even greater acclaim than his first 22 episodes. Also included is the heart-stopping main title theme composed by series creator J.J. Abrams.

3 out of 5 stars Alias Soundtrack.......2007-03-10

It came well packaged and was what I had ordered. Unfortunatley I didn't realize this was the orchestral soundtrack as I was looking for the soundtrack of songs they included in each episode. Good service though.

4 out of 5 stars i want the album!..........2005-04-20

yes the score is very good but i think an album with a couple of songs heard on the show would be great to.trough the 4 seasons of the show, they featured a lots of great tunes from really talented artists (sarah maclachlan,u2,cat stevens,jet,etc...).SOi think the show deserves to have it own album like the rest of the TV shows of our time. The only thing i hope is that if they make one, they won't use those which totally not suit the spirit of the show like sex and the city and summerland soundtracks!...
the ideal soundtrack would be:
jet:last chance
kate bush:this woman's work
stars:going,going,gone
matt beckler:from the summer
hathaway:there's something better
daniel lenz:spy
josh canova:almost ran
the crystal method:starting over
U2:bad
jude:you all...everybody
debbie wesberg:home
michelle featherstone:stay
sarah maclachlan:worlds on fire (alias mix)
so what are you waiting for?!...

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Follow-up to Alias' Season 1 Soundtrack.......2005-03-13

This is more wonderful music from soundtrack composer Michael Giacchino. There is a greater number of slower-paced, melancholy tracks than on the first season soundtrack, but it's a great progression nevertheless. The high-speed action techno tracks remain exciting as usual, while the slower ones are quite emotive. Unfortunately, like with the previous soundtrack, the music from the show's closing credits is not included (though the same melody is peppered throughout both CDs). Here's hoping for future soundtrack releases for Seasons 3 and 4!

3 out of 5 stars Not very exciting, I must say. .......2005-03-13

As a huge Alias fan, I was ecstatic when I got this soundtrack. Sadly, the majority of it consisted of slow, sad songs that were honestly pretty boring. I was looking forward to more loud and exciting songs, but there's probably only about 4 or 5 of those on here. If you like all the musics on Alias though, I'd say go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Soul.......2005-07-15

Classic Soul at its best! If you love classic soul this disc is for you... You'll ending up wanting more! Very fun!

3 out of 5 stars Their greatest? One glaring omission!.......2003-08-11

"The Best of The O'Jays" is an almost best. It's got all of their biggest hits with the exception of their third biggest chart maker..."Use Ta Be My Girl" creates a big hole in this otherwise excellent package from the Epic Legacy series.

If you know the music, you won't be disappointed with the rhythms of the O'Jays and the Gamble/Huff production. The songs are full length and not truncated for radio play. The transfers are very good. The accompanying booklet has an essay written by Robert Palmer and the track listing gives chart dates as well as how many weeks charted and peak chart numbers in both the pop and R&B charts.

A good price point CD, but still wish "Use Ta Be My Girl" was on it. Shame on you Epic!

Four stars for the music, 2 stars for Epic short-changing us.

4 out of 5 stars They Smile In Your Face.......2001-06-11

Before Soul and Pop de-evolved into Disco--the scourge from which modern popular music has never really recovered--there were records around that were rhythm-oriented, danceable, and intelligent. That's a combination almost unheard of in 2001.

The O'Jays, produced by the legendary Gamble & Huff, were among the most popular proponents of the Philadelphia brand of Soul. Along with a few groups from LA, New York and Miami, the O'Jays took over AM radio in the early and mid-1970s, with great singles like "Love Train," "For The Love Of Money," and their masterpiece "Backstabbers." This is a fine compilation of 10 tunes that are truly the best of the O'Jays.

5 out of 5 stars You'll Love This Music.......2000-05-13

Classic seventies soul by one of the key vocal groups of the time. This single CD set is the finest collection of the band's biggest and best-known hits. From "Backstabbers" to "I Love Music", "For The Love Of Money" to "Love Train", this anthology is filled with what made them a key influence on so many modern soul acts. Other collections exist, but this set has top-notch sound remastering, great liner notes and all the right cuts at a really good price.

5 out of 5 stars A definitive collection from P.I.R.'s flagship group........2007-01-15

This is the most comprehensive collection of The O'Jays Philadelphia International recordings. During their fifteen-year association with Gamble and Huff's legendary label (1972-87) The O'Jays made music history and this double-CD set is an excellent anthology. Not only does it feature the charted hit singles--it also features some lesser-known LP tracks. Get it if you don't yet have it!

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation from 415 Records!!!.......2004-07-18

The Best of 415 Records is a compilation CD containing great tracks from the bands on the roster of 415 records, specifically Wire Train, Red Rockers, Translator, Until December, and Romeo Void.

For this review, I am going to limit my comments to the Romeo Void tracks. The other groups I will review later.

The three Romeo Void tracks on this CD are uniformly excellent. Only one track can be found elsewhere.

A Girl In Trouble (Is A Temporary Thing) can also be found on the Romeo Void compilation CD "Warm, In Your Coat" as well as the recent Wounded Bird Records re-release of "Instincts". It's likely available on many 80's compilations as well. You can get an exclusive "Dance Mix" of this songs on a CD entitled "Classic Alternatives Vol 3. It's a great remix, and worth checking out.

Never Say Never is presented in it's original unedited, full length version. Most 80's compilation contain the version bleeping out a rude word in the second verse, and the "Warm, In Your Coat" compilation is missing the beginning guitar only intro. So the only place to get Never Say Never in it's original (and best) version is on this CD.

Not Safe is exclusive to this cd, and it not available anywhere else (as of July 18, 2004).

Hopefully we will see reissues of Romeo Void's other albums: It's A Condition and Benefactor, as well as the NVR SAY NVR EP.

The only thing that could make this disc better (from a Romeo Void fan's standpoint) would be the inclusion of "Apache", which was a Jorgen Ingmann cover songs recorded as the b-side to Romeo Void's first single "White Sweater".

All in all, this is a good compilation. Get it while you can!!!
