While hinting at the groove/melody synthesis so brilliantly executed by Everything But the Girl, the U.K. trio Kosheen have the good sense to temper their beats and let the catchy pop songs fly on Resist. Starting off with the dark drum & bass whirr of the massive club hit Hide U, the album goes on to deliver even harder D&B ("Slip Slide Suicide"), morose downtempo ("I Want It All"), and heady electro ("Catch"), but Kosheen are really aiming for pop chart domination. With Siam Evans's resolute vocals, along with the happy acoustic guitars and artful production of Darren Decoder and Markee Substance, "Cover," "Harder," "Hungry," and "Face in a Crowd" are only half a step removed from the catchy pop tunes that Madonna and Cher regularly churn out. Some may think these songs are too pop, but others will simply get lost in the melodies and dance. --Ken Micallef

          After hearing "Hide U" a couple of years ago, I must confess I wasn't really tempted to listen to the rest of the CD. But then a friend told me she was curious after listening to a bunch of breath-taking remixes from DJs like Satoshi ("Hungry", check it out if you have the chance). So I got it from Amazon as a gift for her, and of course I could't resist giving it a try. OMG I was shocked since the very first time I played it.

          It has a blend of different genres, so don't waste your time trying to figure out whether it's D&B or not. Just enjoy it! Each song has astonishing vocals which cannot be compared to any other singer (ok, some songs may remind you of EBTG but that's it!) Needless to say, I got a copy for myself and I'll get Kokopelli wishing it is as good as this =)

          Starting with the intriguing title & cover image, followed by the stunning interior photos of stuffed creatures in nature dioramas, and rounded out by the static stones of sampling flowed over by the elastic voice of Bristol diva Sian Evans, Kosheen is an aural & visual experience not to be missed.

          The melancholy of "Let Go" and the snarkiness of "Cruelty" transcend all music label genres of drum & bass, electronica, and intelligent pop. It is the melodies that rule here, not the protools.

          If you like Dido, Slowpho, Olive and especially Beth Gibbon's of Portishead's solo CD, "Out of Season," then you will love Kosheen.

          I saw the band at the festival in my homecountry. Flying little higher at that time I was amazed. Next day I thought it might have been because of the THC in my blood so I pretty much forgot about the band. Now during visit in states I saw it in the store and bought it because of 'temporary homesickness'. And I can tell you their music is great whether you are high or not. Music makes you move but mainly the melodies just stick to your mind and ask for replay. My favourite songs are 2,3,4,6,7,8,11,12 and 1,5,9,10,13,14,15.

          This is my favorite CD that I bought this year. It's really energetic and emotional and I love the lead singer's voice. "Broken" is an incredible song and it stands out among the rest. It's musical and Folly has some real talent. There's a really nice contrast between the loud parts and the soft parts and I love how he transitions from singing to screaming. It sounds like the lyrics are coming from his soul when he screams, because it sounds natural, not just low-pitched growling like a lot of heavymetal bands. This is the greatest blend of awesomeness I have ever heard.

          This release by folly was overall a pretty well put together cd. It was more diverse than insanity later. An even blend of punk, hardcore, and ska. I felt, however, that the demo version of "broken" was filled with more emotion, like their live performances. The album version was too fast paced, and it made me feel like it was just quickly put together, when in reality, "broken" is an incredible song. I wasn't feeling the intensity in the album version, leaving me rather disappointed, and more than willing to change the track. But with a more diverse sound, with some tracks with a more ska vibe, and some tracks with a more hardcore vibe, I felt more intrigued to continue listening to the rest of the album, moreso than insanity later. Although the overall content in resist convenience was not even close to topping insanity later, making the album more diverse as they did, I feel, will only make them stronger. Good album. 3 stars.

          If you liked insanity later than this is pretty much a continuation of that cd. The style is the same, a little bit more ska in some parts, but the drumming has gotten significantly more insane. overall pretty badass tunes from these little men. see them live if you can.

              The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?

              The former cafe del mar star Jose Padilla is awesome with this cd Cafe Solo. It is a great formula of sounds and rithym, excellent. I'm buying it as a christmas present for the CEO of my company. I hope I get a raise.

              As a fan of the Cafe del Mar and some of Jose's previous releases, I had to get this album. At first I was quite disappointed, but the feeling changed after the 2nd and 3rd time I've listened to it. The album got a retro feel to it (which I'm not really a fan of, I'm more into chillout trance). The 1st cd is more upbeat than the 2nd one. I give the album 5 stars due to the fact that all tracks on it are very original and unique. It is not like most chill out albums out there, and if you are looking for something different, this is for you.
