Arne Van Petegem is Styrofoam. For his fourth and most successfully realized effort, Van Petegem invited his favorite artists to collaborate on this dreamy recording. They include Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), Markus Acher (the Notwist), Valerie Trebeljahr (Lali Puna), and Andrew Kenny (American Analog Set). Most traveled to Brussels to lay down their tracks, with the exception of Kenny, who swapped files via the Internet. Not too surprisingly--considering the personnel involved--the results sound like a cross between the electronic pop of the Notwist and the Postal Service with a little hip-hop on the side. "Misguided" features a rap from Alias, who also contributes beats, while the album's standout is "Couches in Alleys," in which Gibbard's breathy vocals have been treated to sound otherworldly. (Van Petegem has a similar, if less distinctive voice.) Nothing's Lost marks Styrofoam as one of the premier electronic artist/producers of the 2000s. - Kathleen C. Fennessy

Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. It won 1990 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Leading Actor (Naughton), Featured Actress (Graff), Best Book (Larry Gelbart), and Best Original Score. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Fun Show, Average Score.......2007-02-21
Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.
Cleverness personified.......2006-10-16
A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.
Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14
City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:
3) What You Don't Know About Women
6) With Every Breath I Take (destined to be a classic)
9) Lost and Found (wonderful solo)
10) All You Have To Do Is Wait (FUN! FUN! FUN SONG!!! Hilarious as well)
11) You're Nothing Without Me
13) You Can Always Count On Me (Randy Graff's Tony!)
Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25
1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:
Double Talk
What You Don't Know About Women
With Every Breath I Take [beautiful song!]
Lost And Found
You're Nothing Without Me [the show's hit]
You Can Always Count On Me
Funny
Great cast ... great buy!
I love it!.......2005-02-22
This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:
"together in electric dreams".......2006-07-04
the opening rap antics can come off as a bit too "linkin' park" which i found almost annoying until the hook came in to redeem, then the more you listen to it and accept if for what it is, it fuses into a nice solid track that has become a favorite. as for the rest of the album, it feels like steping into a foggy dream with the color slowly changing.
unfortunately, i have to add that i expected quite a bit more out of this album, instead it just hangs around, which is probably on purpose.
Not Typical Electronica.......2006-02-27
Hard to describe as it is a mix of several elements. It has more to it than ambient music but is not dance by any means. It is a good find.
Excellent electronica with lots of cameos.......2005-05-19
Arne Van Petegem has put together another fine electronic album, and brought along several of his friends from the electronic music scene for cameo appearances.
The album has several high points. "Couches in Alleys," featuring the Postal Service's Ben Gibbard, is an electronic indie-pop delight. The album's closing song, "Make it Mine," clocking in around 9 minutes, features several of Petergem's collaborators, and makes excellent background music. The first track, "Misguided," features some variety, using a slightly harder beat, and rhymes provided by Alias.
Cameos on the album include Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie/The Postal Service, Markus Acher of the Notwist, Valerie Trebeljahr of Lali Puna, and Andrew Kenny of American Analog Set, and "Alias". If you are a fan of any of these artists, I strongly recommend that you check out Styrofoam's latest entry, "Nothing's Lost".
good, but..........2005-04-07
this album has potential, the more it's heard. but what's up with the cheesy rap antics used on the first track? it just seems outta place, destroying the perception for the rest of the album. fortunately, the remaining tracks make up for this abomination.
this is a good one.......2005-02-25
Stryofoam is Arne Van Petegem, a Belgian. He is associated with the Brussels club called Club Ancienne Belgique. Petegem was able to select a bunch of artists to work with. He chose Markus (of The Notwist), Andrew Kenny (of American Analogue Set), and Bent van Looy (of Das Pop). This record became like a This Mortal Coil for now. Other artists joined in: mostly notably Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) and Alias (Anticon) and Valerie Trebeljahr (Lali Puna). This record encompasses electronic music, hiphop and indie rock. Due to some of the people involved, it sounds like a new record by Lali Puna and/or The Postal Service. It is a very satisfactory record. Some of these collaboration albums don't work, but this one does. It's like a merger between Fischerspooner and Wire. It's a relaxing album. There are psychedelic and acid sounds. This is one of the best electronic albums of the past year.

Weak.......2007-01-08
This is a weak effort by Paradise Lost. There are two memorable songs on here, the rest aren't special. Those two songs are "Look at Me Now" and "Sell it to the World".
Another masterpiece..........2001-08-11
First of all, I just have to ask once again how this band never managed to break through in the US. I don't know about everyone else, but I was a little ticked about having to order both "Believe in Nothing" and "Host" from Japan (each of which have great bonus tracks, so snag them if you can). The real tragedy is that "Host" was, in my opinion, hands down the best album of 1999 and "Believe in Nothing" is poised to be the best album of 2001. The only explanation I can come up with is that a band like Paradise Lost can't really be catagorized in any one genre. Each album has seen the band's sound evolve and "Believe in Nothing" continues this trend. After the somewhat radical stylistic departure of "Host" (although if you really listen to "One Second," you can see where "Host" came from) I was curious to see what they could possibly do to make "Believe in Nothing" take that next musical evolutionary step. But by mixing elements of both "Host" and "One Second," they've managed to do just that and produce yet another landmark album that mainstream America will probably NEVER hear. The songs strike a perfect balance of classic Paradise Lost themes of darkness, despair, and anger/frustration. "I am Nothing" is probably my fave track but "Fader" really caught me by surprise in the same way as the title track from "One Second" did because it's sound is just so unexpected. Without exception, all of the songs are extremely well written. The musicianship is superb and most of the tracks feature some of Nick Holmes' best vocal work. If you liked his clear, strong vocals on "Host" then you will love the way he sounds on this album. Do I miss the heavy thrashing and growling of their earlier albums? Yes, at times. But you know what, if they still sounded like that we all would have gotten tired of them a long time ago. Good bands come and go, but truly great bands grow and change with the times, eventually transcending their genre. "One Second" and "Host" took the first steps towards that destinction and "Believe in Nothing" has achieved it. All in all, this is an amazing album from what I consider to be THE best band of any genre in the last decade. Alas, if only American audiences could unplug themselves from the insipid ramblings of no talent hacks long enough to notice bands like Paradise Lost (you would think the name would be enough to garner some sort of attention, but maybe it reminds them a little too much of their dreaded high school reading lists).
classic paradise lost.......2001-07-14
i love everything paradise lost have released...... through every major style change, i have followed. there is not a single disappointing paradise lost album.
for the first time listener who wants to buy a paradise lost album, the question is 'which genre of rock/metal do you like most?'..... because most likely there is a paradise lost album that would fit neatly into one of these genres.
the album of discussion here is believe in nothing, paradise lost's most recent masterpiece. the heavy guitars have returned, but not in the classic metal style of 'draconian times'. rather, believe in nothing is more of an ode to modern rock while retaining the epic melody and ingenious lyric that defines paradise lost
hmmm..........2001-06-12
Can't hate it, can't love it either.
Yes, this is heavier than host (not better) but still something is missing... what happen with the lead guitars?!?!?!, they are average at the most... another thing i don't like is the bass drum, sounds like a box of cookies been hit it by a child!! seems they can't match the gothic beauty of one second (the best for me), or the so long ago new and unique sound of draconian times (the best for the majority).
they have added more guitars but still i think host is better than this one, because it was more shaped and defined into thecno (metal heads scream!!!!!!)and then had more personality.
Don't get me wrong, this is better than all the nu-metal... of this days, but I think PL can, and hope they will, do it much more perfect... we have to wait till next time...
Paradise Lost is back!.......2001-05-05
After a fairly dissappointing, "Host" PL returns with a truly great record. While not returning to their roots entirely, PL simply released a solid and true follow up to One Second. Paradise Lost were my favorite band for years. Shades of God, Icon and Draconian Times are 3 of the best albums I own. While I liked One Second and to a lesser extent, Host, the magic of those 3 previous albums was missing. With Believe in Nothing, the magic is back. Also, upfront guitars are back, too. With these release PL basically mixes the best of One Second and Host with a dash of Icon thrown in for good measure. Tracks like "Mouth", "Sell it to the World", and "The World's Pretending" are among the best PL songs in years. While fans that were upset with the direction PL took on Host might want a full return to the Draconian Times sound, the fact is simple. PL has grown up, they have changed. After a misstep in a different direction, Believe in Nothing reaffirms that Paradise Lost can write great, melodic, powerful, and somewhat accessible songs. If you liked any of the latter period PL but this now. If you didn't, give it a turn anyways, you may be surprised.

Some of the best original music I've ever heard.......2007-05-10
I accidentally stumbled onto Shpongle and their brand of irresistible, some say psychedelic music. It is a work so diverse and so out of any concievable branding, its impossible to classify their music into a genre. Which is an absolutely good thing. This album is simply some of the most original, beautiful and colorful music I've ever heard.
There is music that makes you bop your head, or move the pelvis, but the music on this album simply makes your imagination run wild to scattered rhythms, lost guitars and cycles of playful energy.
some tracks that are highlighted:
Levitation Nation - one of my favorites on this entire album, full of energy and Brasilian samba melody, this song takes you on a dreamy whirlwind ride through the colors of the Brasilian carnaval, you can almost touch the feather-headed samba dancers.. absolutely incredible
Nothing Lasts - feels like a waterfall of music, xylophone melodies are constantly dropping on a playful undertone of bass, very rhythmic and energetic song
Stamen of Shamen - a sexy, elegant mix of female vocals, saxophone and drums.. very different from the others, but equally beautiful
When Shall I be Free? - a tibetan guitar and flute song, full of low key energy and rhythm. Very hard to describe but very excellent.
Exhalation - a moody track, very chill and interesting layout of chords, every note is different.. loving this one.
I recommend for any genuine music lover to pick up this album. its timeless, and as one reviewer mentioned, its a dream sequence copied down on music. Literally.

Shpongle Develops Attention Deficit Disorder.......2007-04-05
As you've probably noticed by now, Shpongle fans tend to go to extreme lengths to heap praise upon this band. To many, this is more than a band, it's an object of veneration, an incomparable psychedelic experience, a profound spiritual journey, all rolled into one musical package. Being a Shpongle fan myself, I can see where the adoration is coming from - the band's first two albums are phenomenal - but at the same time, this sort of glassy-eyed reverence gets in the way of a reviewer's ability to assess the band critically and objectively. Too bad, because a cold, hard review is exactly what this album needs.
Stop gushing over this disc, people: this is the only Shpongle album that doesn't measure up to the standards set by the first two. Sure, it's got the occasional flash of brilliance -- a classic Shpongle bassline here, a well-placed burst of Brazilian percussion there -- but it just doesn't hold together as a cohesive listening experience.
The strength of the first two albums lay in their ability to seamlessly transition from one sound to another, gradually morphing from floaty ambience to a dubbed-out dance beat to a Latin salsa number, etc., and making the transitions sound perfectly natural. On this album the transitions are less fluid and more abrupt; in fact, they frequently interrupt the flow of the music and sound forced and jarring. The end effect is a pretty schizophrenic album that doesn't flow from beginning to end very well, and which comes across as a smorgasbord of musical ideas that never really jelled into a real album.
If this disc had been made by anyone else I would probably be more forgiving, but since it's from Shpongle I expect something a little closer to perfection. They missed the mark a little on this one, but it's still worth checking out `cuz, hey, there's only one Shpongle. So I would give it 4/5 stars when measured against most electronica out there, but compared to Shpongle's previous albums it would be more like 2/5 stars. That gives an average of 3 stars.
oh my stars and garters..........2007-03-28
...my opinion of every other CD in my collection just went down by one or more notches. This is the most intricate, well-produced, creative electronic music ever recorded by man. I've been a fan of Simon Posford aka Hallucinogen aka half-of-Shpongle for years; I used to be a small-time psy-trance DJ, and Shpongle's "Rumors of Vapors" was the first record I ever bought. I fell in love with that one, but man oh man have Simon and company come a long way.
This is a 20-track CD... and several minutes into it, I was loving it, but started thinking, "Man, this is a long first track!" Actually, it was already on track THREE; it's just that the whole album is continuously mixed. One long journey through Posford's brilliant vision of otherworldy sound. Soft, beautiful elements mixed with razor-edged synthesizers, mixed with world music, or jazz, or electric guitars, or chanting, or singing, all sliced-and-diced, rearranged, reverb'd, panning from one speaker to the other in a perfect blend. You can almost hear the music telling you "Psyke!" over and over again as it changes directions, stops on a dime and gives 9 1/2 cents' change. Illusory, ethereal, absolutely magical.
Like others have said, words can't do this music justice. If you're not dead, you'll love this album. Enough said.
Words fail me..........2006-11-28
...but I made a valiant attempt in my review of TALES OF THE INEXPRESSIBLE. See that review for my multi-word gushings about this incredible duo. Here's the bottom line: All the 5-star reviews here are right on the mark. Check out this and the other Shpongle releases: TALES, REMIXED, and ARE YOU SHPONGLED? They are all similar in style and yet hold onto their own pricleless uniqueness. All fans of electronica that love the synthesizer as much as I do owe it to themselves to check out the music of Simon Posford and Raja Ram; they have placed themselves into a niche all their own. For fans of: Future Sounds of London, Kraftwerk, the earlier releases of Enigma & Delerium, and Amethystium, among many others.

Customer Reviews:
Short, catchy and well written songs........2004-09-30
Paradise Lost, one of the founders of English Doom Metal, deliver a modern heavy rocking album. Although the band sounds heavier than their previous record Host, they do not return to the more heavy sounds on early records. The songs are short, catchy and well written. If you are searching for songs with lengthy instrumental parts, then do not buy this album. The songs are vocal orientated. Fortunately vocalist Nick Holmes impresses me very much on Believe In Nothing. Although the songs are extremely catchy, they have a depressive atmosphere. So do not expect happy catchy songs. The only real negative aspect of the album is that the album could have been better if some songs were longer and more challenging to listen to. On most of the songs the pace does not really change and adding some instrumental parts could have made the album better.
No; buy Symbol of Life.......2004-08-23
This album is getting good reviews here, and it's nice to see people still keen on Paradise Lost. Unfortunately, this album was "lost" on me. Their newest one, Symbol of Life, is an excellent album. It's dark and heavy and has incredible hooks. To me, Believe in Nothing sounded more like Nickelback. Yes, it's heavier than what they were doing for a while, but I find it pretty uneventful, and there's certainly nothing gothic about it.
Paradise Regained.......2003-05-23
For the last few years, there has been a division in PL's fanbase. On the one hand there are the old-schoolers, fans of PL's early gothic death-metal vibe; on the other, fans of PL's newer, more contemporary sound. I was one of the former; I loved everything up to 1995's Draconian Times album, and then One Second came along and, despite having its moments, it was a heartbreaking disappointment. After Host, I lost touch with the band, which was unfortunate considering I have their logo tattooed on my arm. But then, after hearing good things about their latest album, Symbol Of Life, I bought Believe In Nothing, and was more than pleasantly surprised.
The guitars are back! Maybe it's not as heavy as it used to be, but in terms of tunes and song structures, it far surpasses what PL used to create. In many ways similar to the stomping Once Solemn and B-side Fear, the album takes gothic rock to the next level, fusing pounding riffs with Nick Holmes' newly-discovered vocal dexterity, and throwing in the odd few samples to boot. Never short of musical hooks in the past, PL's material on this album sticks in the head like none before. The opening pairing of I Am Nothing and Mouth actually works better than the immortal juxtaposition of Embers Fire and Remembrance on the Icon album, something that I thought would never be possible. Once you reach the end of track two, you cannot pull away - the album [draws] you in and refuses to let go.
In short, Believe In Nothing is awesome. Not as heavy as Symbol Of Life, but altogether tighter and more consistent, this is the album that signals Paradise Lost's return to grace. They have successfully managed to bridge the gap between their old-school roots and their new-school developments to make what I believe is the best Paradise Lost album. After hearing One Second, I believed that the world's greatest band had died; now I know that like the phoenix rising from the ashes, they have been born again and have grown into something great. Whether you're into the old-school or new-school band, I guarantee you'll be into this.
Dark masterpiece........2002-11-26
"Believe in Nothing" was generally not recieved well by Paradise Lost fans. I have to say on first listen I was stunned!
This album saw the return of heavy guitars in a big way, and was in my opinion Paradise Lost's return to metal.
This album brings influences from "Draconian Times", "One Second" and "Host" together, and sounds brilliant. The musicianship is superb, and the bass on this album is extremely heavy.
Nick's vocals continue their trend of improving with every album, here a lot of singing is performed, and sometimes one can notice an edging back into Draconian-style yelling, and of course, the ever-present feeling of hopelessness and great cynicism. Greg's leads show up here and there, with their ever slow and despairing aura. Aaron's rhythmn riffs are very professional. Steve's bass as already mentioned continues to severely increase in volume with each successive album, here it reaches almost the point of explosion! Very nice. Lee's drumming is brilliant with some nice bass pedal drives and great precision.
"Believe in Nothing" posseses several standout songs, for me more than average on a Paradise Lost album. "Divided" is beautifully melodied, orchestrated and executed. This is one of the albums best songs. "Illumination" is a nice slow tune with atmospheric guitar work and great vocals. "World Pretending", the albums closer, is very dark and extremely heavy. Nick's singing here really is professional, the mood here really dives into new lows. For me, however, the best song is "Never Again". This is the album's darkest song, with a great deal of eerie guitar work going on in the background, along with a nice lengthy string-section bridge.
I do not have a favourite Paradise Lost album as such, but I consider "Believe in Nothing" to be the most underrated of them all, the most looked-passed, so to speak. This is a shame because for me it is one of Paradise Lost's most effective albums, and I think that people will be able to appreciate this better having heard the new Paradise Lost album "Symbol of Life".
"Believe in Nothing" is brilliant, I'd recommend this to anyonewho feels the need to sit down for a second and reflect on life, or just to enjoy the midnight hour!
Genius.
Europe's best in gothic metal!.......2002-08-14
Paradise Lost have been extremely popular in the goth-metal circles of Europe for many years, but have remained a virtual unknown here in the U.S. Hopefully that will change with the Koch label re-releasing their most recent albums (as well as the forthcoming "Deus"). Long ago a mostly death-metal band, they've evolved into several different and compelling permutations, from the dark, Metallica-meets-Type O Negative world of "Draconian Times", to the moody, synth-pop Depeche Mode-isms of "Host". This, though, is my favorite - a return to the harder, guitar-edged sound of their past, without relinquishing the electronic textures of their recent releases - and with great songwriting, excellent instrumentation and an ever-improving vocalist. Like Tiamat, The Gathering and Flowing Tears, Paradise Lost are simply one of the best of the many gothic-inspired bands out today. Check out all their albums from "Draconian" on - you won't be disappointed!
