Album Description
Following their critically acclaimed debut EP for Ghostly & a few independent releases, Brooklyn via Shutesbury MA's MOBIUS BAND finally deliver their first longplayer. 10 songs of British incluenced rock songs with elements of electronica ala The Broadcast and Postal Service, with depth & maturity beyond the young trio's years.
Customer Reviews:
After four great EPs, band stumbles a bit on full length debut.......2005-11-23
In four years, The Mobius Band have released four different EPs, showing a slow progression from a somewhat ramshackle indie rock electronic band with influences that ranged from kraut to ambient to an almost straightforward rock trio with small flourishes of the weird touches that initially set them apart. Fortunately, their songwriting skills have also grown as well, and their City Vs Country EP (that came out earlier this year) found the group creating some of their best and most concise tracks to date.
So, several years after their inception, the group is finally debuting their first full-length release in The Loving Sounds Of Static and the results are slightly mixed. There are still some great tracks, but there are also some ones that feel almost like filler, and given that the album runs barely over forty minutes, it makes the album sag a bit. One of said songs is the opener of "Detach," which seems to have all the components in place, but just sort of spins in place with fairly plain chord progressions and an overlong second half. Fortunately, the group kicks things up a notch musically with a more driving rhythm section and some synth-laced breakdowns that seem to pile up the momentum.
Then again, the group sorta scraps that momentum through the midsection of the album with a batch of midtempo electro-ballad tracks. "Twilight" mixes some overwrought lyrics with twinkling synth noodlings while "Taxicab" finds the group remaking one of their old tracks with a bogged-down electro lullaby feel. Even the loud ending can't salvage the track, and the mopey pace continues with "You're Wrong." Of course the group doesn't have to rock out on every track, but with the aforementioned (and a couple others sandwiched in) tracks comprising almost half the running length of the entire album, it makes for a bit of a slog.
The group picks things up from there out, and turn in some of their best tracks to date. The album-titled "The Loving Sounds Of Static" finds the group locking into the honed sound that they turned in on their City Vs Country EP and the resulting track is a breath of fresh air while "I Just Turned 18" is a bit on the silly side lyrically, but still an invigorating track that draws on past memories without coming across as cloying. The album closer of "Doo Wop" brings some ringing guitars and odd time signatures in for another solid track and a great closing to the album. Based on their past output, The Loving Sounds Of Static has about 2 EPs worth of good material and another EPs worth of tracks that just don't quite feel up to par. Given it's the true album debut from the group, I'll cut them some slack, but here's hoping they can harness the strength of their short game (to use a golf term) from here on out.
(from almost cool music reviews)
Moderate Sounds of Static.......2005-09-14
Mobius Band had everything going for them leading up to their debut full-length: they've already released a couple of outstanding EPs, they put on a great live act, and they've been compared to some of the most popular bands in their genre. Sad to say, they didn't live up to the hype with their first LP.
The album starts out slow. It ends slow. Where it recaptures some of what's come before is on songs like "You're Wrong", where it revisits Radiohead's "I Might Be Wrong", or on the song "I Just Turned 18", the closest they come on the album to an FM-friendly track. Songs like Philadelphia test the patience, and beg to be skipped because you know what's left to come, and it's easy to tell that you don't need to hear it.
Don't get me wrong. I really like this band. A 3 star on Amazon means that it's an OK album. And that's what it is. Ok. Bands like The Postal Service or The Broadcast are being done an injustice if you refer to them based on this album alone. I'll look forward to future releases by the Mobius Band, because I know they have more to give than this album alone.
Back to the future?--kind of? .......2005-09-14
Okay, I am 44 years old and remember going to The Paradise in Boston when I was in my teens. My musical past goes way back to seeing the emergence of bands before they were popular, and I 've watched the transition go from metal to techno to really bad pop and even worse rap.
I am glad to see the return of some bands with decent sound (hallelulah!) like Mobius Band. I've been playing my old 80's music so long now, seemingly forever, waiting for this type of music to return. It has returned--digitized no less.
This CD has some really great, clean sounds, seemingly simple but actually pretty intricate (without sounding cluttered) when you listen to them. And the lyrics have meaning--joy oh joy.
Hoping for more from these guys.
heard about this record from a friend..........2005-08-28
and this is by far the smartest and most cohesive record i've heard in a long time. i love the cool breeze vocals that are emotive (but not emo!) and not too hipster-detached. very excited to see them live and spread the word - so if you're reading this, do yourself a favor and buy both the EP and full album as they're honestly better than arcade fire and bloc party combined! seriously - mobius band has some lasting songs that deserve a good listen and a permanent spot in your record collection.
believe the hype - this a fine debut........2005-08-22
like the other review says, loving sounds of static is a record that is both forward-thinking and mom-friendly..quite an achievement, i'd say. in dealing with growing up and breaking up, mobius band offer a much more mature take on the subject matter than most other pop songwriters, making this a very poignant debut that should have something to offer almost everyone.
musically the band strike a very interesting balance between glitchiness and live instruments (especially in the drumming) that seems like a natural step forward from bands like the postal service and interpol. i hope mobius band gets more attention, cos this album has 'sleeper hit' written all over it..

this is a great album that has many great songs. the music is awesome too. it is sad that this duo has not recieved the attention they deserve. very talented!!! they both sing and have beautiful voices.
all the songs are good, seriously. my favorites are dark side of your heart, alone, islands, hardly a day.
awesome!.......2007-02-13
This cd is awesome! Kristine is one of my new favorite vocalists. Thank you!
Overall...quite a nice disc.......2004-06-29
I had heard QED's version of "Love Bites" sometime last year, and honestly didn't think much of it back then, and still don't now, really (however, the Ean Sugarman Mix, also on here, is a bit better). QED's original version is ok, but not the reason I'd buy the disc. However, I had heard "Hardly a Day" the other night on a dance music run on the radio and was completely "Wow"ed by it. It's a great song, and although the version on this disc isn't the club version I heard, it still gives one a pretty good taste of what the club version sounds like. The club version's just a little meatier and longer (and I will be getting that, too).
I honestly wasn't expecting much from the rest of the disc, but I was quite surprised at how good the disc is overall. Instead of a really cheesy dance pop (i.e. - DJ Sammy...awful!!!), QED has a pretty good ear for music. There is some borderline cheese on it (to appease to the mainstream masses I imagine), but there is some nice stuff on here:
"Unaware" is a nice sharp sounding tune. Good bassline, and Kristine Hendricks' vocals shine here very nicely. My guess is this will be the next club hit for QED after "Hardly a Day".
"Dark Side of Your Heart"; for a balladish type song on a dance album, it's quite listenable. It's much better than "So It Is", another ballad on the disc, which is one of the "borderline cheese" songs on this disc...uh, make that "cheese", and really should be on a Backstreet Boys album instead.
"Vampyre" almost has the feel of an epic song, as it's broken into three parts (Prelude, Soul and Body), starting off with some nice piano, then suddenly blasting off with a fast beat, nice bassline, "opera"ish vocals from Ms. Hendricks, tribal drums, chants and so forth. It's quite well done and best listened to as one whole piece. (Soul is my favorite section of it).
"Epilogue (Hardly a Day, Pt. 1)" almost feels like it should be on another album. It's really more of a rocker than a dance tune, but I can appreciate Valentin (the other 1/2 of QED) putting it on anyway because it is different from the rest of the disc and to indicate his interest in music overall.
The other tracks, "Islands", "Alone" and "Running Away" are listenable, but don't really do anything for me at the moment, and for me, border on the cheese factor just a bit.
However, overall, I quite like this. It somewhat reminds me of KLF's "White Room" album or Chicane's first CD, as Valentin has tried something a little different here and there, not just loading it with cheese pop. Recommended.
Hot! Definitly A Must Have!.......2004-03-25
I've been looking for their CD and finally found it. I loved their remix version of Love Bites and this CD has another version as well. Their sound is upbeat and I really love listening to this CD.

Fine English Music.......2007-03-20
This CD is filled with chamber music by a special English composer who managed to incorporate modality and other early music aspects into his style (like VW and others). One needs an understanding of this style to take pleasure in it and a few listens to absorb all the musical effects. The 3+3+2 pulse at the beginning on the Clarinet sonata is hipnotic!
This is GREAT music once you've gotten into it and composers like Howells, John Ireland, Gerald Finzi... all wrote well crafted music with a keen awareness of the instruments involved and are now growing in popularity and making it into the main repertoire. Well played performances from top British players.
Nothing to write home about........2006-06-16
As I listened to this CD, I kept asking myself how I ended up purchasing it. The music just sort of meanders around, with no catchy themes or moving passages. While these pieces are played and recorded competently, I heard nothing that would motivate me to give this recording repeated spins.

simply a pleasure.......2005-08-04
This recording contains chamber works featuring a harp. All of the pieces are pleasant to listen to and have stimulating content. The recording is very good. This CD was my first experience with Bax and has certainly inspired me to look for more.
Great Music, Great Performances.......2001-02-03
At the centre of all the pieces on this disc is the harp.
Bax writes wonderfully for the instrument - his inspiration possibly lying in the supposed `Irishness' of it, possibly in the luck he had of having some very good harpists to write for - the fantasy sonata (the combination of viola and harp really works well, and Bax manages to avoid an over lush sound) and the sonata for flute and harp having been written for the Russian harpist, Maria Korchinska.
I must admit, as I listened to the CD I found it very hard to think of Ireland - and very easy to think of France and Europe in the early 20th century. Maybe this is why I mobius have been attracted to the music.
The performances are excellent (as is the recording) bringing a dignity to the music which forces one to reassess, in a way, the nationalistic trivialisms that are all too often attached to Bax's music.
As the notes point out - some of this sounds very like Debussy - but it was written before. Some of it sounds like Britten too. If you like either of those two composers - you'll love this.
BOUNTIFUL BAX.......2001-02-01
What better music to opine about than the latest Naxos endeavor comprising some mighty fine chamber music for harp by Arnold Bax (1883-1953). Purchased a mere week ago, I've been listening to it ceaselessly--- as it fits my rather lachrimose state of mind perfectly.
Among these four outstandingly evocative, elegiac and beautiful compositions, there's nary a dud to be found.
The Elegiac Trio for Harp, Viola and Flute--- first performed in 1917--- runs a mere 8:47, but it is a real gem... and easily worth the price of the CD, alone. Heartfelt, atmospheric, luminous, the Trio ranks very close to perfection in every way. The combination of instruments, each bringing to the work its own voice and color and warmth, is simply magical.
Ditto for the gorgeous Fantasy Sonata for Harp and Viola, first performed in 1927, whose third movement "Lento" is one of the most gentle of Bax inspirations I've ever heard. There is a distinct Anglo/Irish impressionism here--- and throughout the other works, as well--- so tender and romantic, yet so sad... it's impossible to resist.
The Sonata for Flute and Harp, performed in 1928, is yet another gem, unfolding as it does with the ambience of an Irish countryside. At its heart is the particularly wistful slow movement. Kudos to flautist Lorna McGhee for her tender, poetic playing.
Lastly, the Quintet for Harp and Strings (written in 1919) is a co-joined, three movement work. Generally more "dramatic" than its sisters, the Quintet still retains an obvious Bax melancholy, its overall tone introspective. Harpist Alison Nicholls is to be commended for her delicacy of touch and sense of mystery.
What an outstanding bargain this CD is! A real find. Moody, appealing, accessible. Compliments to the members of Mobius, who play splendidly, and to the engineers who have captured their warmth and immediacy so well.

Don't miss this band..........2002-08-26
The Mobius Band are the most artistically mature unsigned act I have heard since Beck didn't have a deal. For now, they sell their CDs direct to fans, and you should become one today. Start with either this one or "Two;" it doesn't matter because you'll end up buying the other soon enough. If you like Trans Am, Tortoise, Yo La Tengo, Labradford or Otomo Yoshihide, you will like the Mobius Band.
Best Secret in Music.......2002-08-12
Nobody seems to know about this band and it's too damn bad. These guys must've been raised on Sun Ra and Miles Davis and are currently listening to modern indie rock like modest mouse or wilco. The music is a fusion of jazz rythms, post - rock instrumentation and electronic adventurism. If tortoise were more rockin and less.....well.....boring, you'd get something half as good as this. Highly reccommended to anyone who digs music that empasizes innovation and listenability at the same time.

Great Album.......2007-02-03
This is one of the best hip hop albums of all time in terms of lyrical content. Excellent and unique album for anybody who appreciates thoughtful lyrics. Great production too. One of the most prized albums in my collection.
must have.......2006-08-07
If you are into Atom's Family, you will love this.Production is dope, most tracks produced by Cryptic One .But a few tracks produced by Jestoneart,Blockhead and Blueprint. The tracks with Aesop Rock and Alaska(Hanger 18)do not dissapoint. His style is very much like Illogic with better beats. So if you are a fan of Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock,Illogic.........COP THIS.Support the underground artist..food for thought .The lyrics are off the hook
Dope album........2005-04-10
Another solid Atoms Family release. From the crew that gave us Cannibal OX, Hangar 18, etc... Can't wait for more releases by Cryptic One. Buy this album it's dope, and the insert art is crazy.
