After nearly three decades spent perfecting her multilayered harmony techniques and range of styles as a jingle singer, vocalist for Adiemus and session artist for the likes of George Michael, David Bowie, Tina Turner, and Seal, Miriam Stockley emerges with her debut solo recording, Miriam. An amalgamation of African inspired pop, Celtic folksiness, and classically tinged commercial pop, Miriam is a selection of strongly focused vocals embedded in a tapestry of curiously effective composition. Strings swell and swirl round the singer's potent vocals, reed instruments slice through the smooth flow of keyboards, drums and penny whistle set place and mood. Indicative of what is right with both adult contemporary pop and multiethnic easy listening, Miriam steers clear of easy categorization while remaining familiar enough to be commercially viable. --Paige La Grone

Cantata Mundi making the past very present.......2007-03-10
The fact that I don't understand a word of the lyrics of this CD is what challanges my imagination more than anything else. I think of the dead Latin language of the Roman Empire. Intended or not, this CD somehow gives life to ancient tales about the mediterranian people about the epoch of Christ. Sometimes the use of female vocals in conjunction with classically arranged harmonies (often reminding me of Mozart) makes me think of some cult of Maria Magdalene. At other times (eg. 'Song of the Plains') the music seems to bring me on a journey through the world of females, a journey in time and space.
Beautiful Music.......2006-11-10
This CD is the best of two different Musical Types. The orchestrtion and the choral components are wonderfully matched. When you listen to this you can go on a journey that is so magical!
The BEST Adiemus.......2006-11-06
It's hard to decide which of the Adiemus CD's I would rate as best. However, as the title suggests, this is the title I always recommend to friends who have never heard any of Karl Jenkins' work. Every track is a great experience as well as a unique musical journey. Stated conversely, if you don't like this album, you won't like anything else by Karl Jenkins.
Adiemus II.......2006-08-11
Overall, I think this is the best of the Adiemus works. The symphonic overtones add greatly to the richness of the songs.
Gasps & Goosebumps! A 2,000 Mile CD!.......2005-10-28
This is my first experience listening to Karl Jenkins' music and I would give this CD 10 stars. I got the CD the day before taking a 500 mile trip and just took it out of the box and placed it on my dash. I had bought the CD for cut#8 Chorale IV which I heard on a cable TV New Age music station. I listened to them all and pretty much skipped cut #1 Cantus-Song of Tears because it started off a little boring.
Boy was I wrong! Cut#1 is possibly one of the most startlingly beautiful pieces EVER written. It takes a minute to get going, but it is breathtaking. It caused me to gasp "Wow!" and raised the hair on my arms each time I listened to it. The gorgeous payoff of this piece comes in at 6 minute 51 seconds. As another reviewer said, they used this piece in a live show and I was wondering as I listened to it why someone wouldn't put it to that great use.
This music not only gives you mind pictures, it can transcend distance OR time. I felt myself standing on a cliff in the Himalayas looking down across space and time. Incredible! Karl Jenkins is definitely an unhearalded musical genius.
Cut #14 Cantilena is what I would like played at my funeral if I go having lived a truly good life (which I have.) It is a fitting denouement of a good life. Same for #15 Elegia.
I had not read the jewelbox info before i played this CD and thought I heard Miriam Stockley. Great mix, these two artists! She is vastly talented and the Africa, Latin, Classical mix that she infuses makes this CD so addictive, I listened to it on two trips, over 2,000 miles! I will be buying more Karl Jenkins music.

DISAPPOINTING.......2006-07-05
I was expecting to hear some of the old songs with the same arrangements and backup bands. I was surprised to find not one single piece the same as I remembered. If you have no comparison, you would probably enjoy this gifted songstress. I found the quality overall to be disappointing.
You Can't Beat Mama? Join Her!.......2004-10-22
Mama Africa! What a proper name for the Queen of African Song. This collection has all the great songs from Miriam. It plays choronoligically from her earliest recording up to her most recent records. The melodies are infectious and Miriam makes you want to know more about the plight of the people of Africa she describes in her songs. This is a must-have for lovers of South African music.
Good choice for new audience.......2004-03-17
As the previous review says, this is a good collection. However, as I was trying to replace songs from two albums which apparently haven't been released on CD (1960's "Miriam Makeba" RCA album and the early '60's Kapp Records album "The Many Voices of Miriam Makeba"), this CD wasn't what I was looking for. Most of the songs sound nothing like the arrangements I loved on those albums. They would be great for a new audience, but for those who are looking to replace those early '60's records, don't expect this to be the same. If your intention isn't to replace 40-year-old albums, though, I would definitely recommend this CD.
Very nice.......2002-11-23
Buy this just for tracks 1,4,15 and so on. To hear the early version of this voice is a pleasure in it self. But to hear the growth and development of an artist of this caliber is a rare treat indeed. Oh go ahead you know you want it.

When British composer Karl Jenkins launched Adiemus with the Songs of Sanctuary album in 1995, it was a fresh and exhilarating take on global music. Jenkins used choral vocals similar to Enya's, but spiked with a language of the imagination (merging African and Latin phonemes) and stoked by Jenkins's pastoral arrangements. Never wholly original--Lisa Gerrard and Elizabeth Fraser had already worked out fantasy vocal designs and the 1960s African mass "Missa Luba" effected a similar choral/African/Latin sound--Adiemus nevertheless found a new take on English composers' penchant for choirs. However, after six years and four albums mining this vein, Jenkins's sound rings more hollow with each recording.
The Eternal Knot is drawn from Jenkins's soundtrack to a BBC documentary called The Celts. You might recall that Enya also evolved her sound in the late 1980s doing a soundtrack for another documentary called The Celts. Taking his titles from the Celtic legends that populate the documentary, Jenkins orchestrates cinematic landscapes full of swelling crescendos and dynamic cadences. Less oppressive than the heavily orchestrated Adiemus II, The Eternal Knot still wears thin. He casts Miriam Stockley's voice into a boys-choir register, turning her staccato phonemes into incessant prattle. But when she's in her warmer middle range, her layered voice is enveloping. Despite the theme of the album, Celtic music is only used as an occasional touchstone, with uilleann piper Davy Spillane, a few bodhran-style percussion grooves, and harpist Catrin Finch providing some relief from Jenkins's string-laden classical pretensions. --John Diliberto

Adiemus IV.......2007-05-07
This is another celtic cd which stirs the blood to your core. It has great melodies and wonderful arrangements to compliment the vocals. I will look forward to purchasing more of Adiemus in the future.
whaaaaaat?????.......2007-01-06
that was the first thing that popped into my head when i heard this album. i loved `songs of sanctuary' and was heartily disappointed not to also love this album. while it is obvious that the music is celtic-inspired, it is *only* the music that is so. the vocals seem to float along on their own with no relevance to the instrumentals beneath them. the language, which is the same play-language as `sanctuary', is blatantly out of place here. while with `sanctuary', despite the make-believe quality of the words, the quality of the vocal sound was instantly recognizable as south african. but those nasal tones and front-of-the-mask, brassy notes don't translate well to a celtic sound. (in fact, the whole album sounds like a clash of two cultures. as if a south african choir accidentally got routed to the shannon airport and collided with the chieftans.) on the whole, a disappointing album. if you want celtic music, buy a putumayo collection or *anything* by narada, clannad, celtic woman, etc. don't buy this album.
Good...Although two of the Songs are on my Ipod..........2006-01-24
My favorite songs are "Cu Chullain" and "Math was a Wizard". Cu Chullain is a good song for a ballet performance.
By the way, I own these two songs on my Ipod!

New Age with an eclectic blend of styles from across the musical map!.......2005-11-23
Some earlier reviewers would suggest that this isn't up to the standards that Karl Jenkins achieved in some of his earlier output. I couldn't respond to that because this is the first Adiemus recording I've ever heard and, frankly, I loved every second of it. I'm thrilled that other listeners think the earlier recordings are better because I've now got something to really look forward to.
For me this recording evinced a blend of emotional responses - quiet contemplation, relaxation, toe-tapping, a satisfied smile, that whole body moving response to a driving rhythm and a joyful sense of participation in an all-encompassing musical experience. The recording is an eclectic blend of styles that cover an enormous range - Celtic rhythms and fiddling tunes in the style of River Dance; hard rock and steady beats that took a page out of Enigma's play book; a beautifully blended chorus of female voices that might well have included Enya, Diane Arkenstone and Loreena McKennitt; orchestral backgrounds that ranged from lush full orchestral accompaniment to pizzicato violin arpeggios that would have done Tchaikovsky proud in The Nutcracker; simple but effective, pleasing blues style acoustic guitar; full-bodied high speed choral sections that might have been penned by Karl Orff as part of the unforgettable Carmina Burana; and, a very effective seven beat piece that reminded me of the rhythms of Dave Brubeck's Unsquare Square Dance or Moe Kaufman's Swingin' Shepherd Blues!
Well, to each their own I suppose. It's certainly possible that this CD suffered by comparison to the quality of his other works but as a first time listener, I've got nothing but praise for it!
Paul Weiss
Unimaginative.......2004-06-14
Unlike 'Songs of Sanctuary', this album lacks imagination and invention. It comes across as somewhat monotonous and overly 'camp'.
Cu Chulain is a reasonable start but even there the urgent contribution by the violins comes too early, and by the end of the 'song', the concept becomes tiresome. The title track seems to be depicting something monumental in its climatic outbursts but if so, the effect is more visual (the documentary itself) than aural. It's odd how there is apparently no language used here yet 'Palace of the Crystal Bridge' manages to sound like some clueless surfer-girl taking herself way too seriously.
'The Wooing of Etain' is a beautiful instrumental and one of the very few pieces on the album that is thought-provoking, as is 'King of the Sacred Grove' (which is mellow and sounds suitably regal)....this is more of what I've come to expect/appreciate in Jenkins. Even so, he could have done more to build a climax towards the end of this, the third longest piece on the album.
'Songs' such as 'The Dagda' would be interesting diversions/fillers for the album if it wasn't for the synthesized, mass-product result of the album overall. Less 'ethnic-sounding' and more towards 'tacky' (e.g., the duo separated by 1 octave sung in unison at the end of 'Hermit of the Sea Rock'), this isn't as moving an experience as some would laud it to be.

Customer Reviews:
Songs to warm the heart.......2007-03-28
I grew up with just one of Miriam Makeba's albums, the only one available at that time, simply called: Miriam Makeba. Technology has outdated the record albums, replaced with tapes and now cd's. That album, no longer available, I searched for some of my favorite songs, and they are here. Miriam Makeba has a beautiful voice, a warm voice. If you want an introduction to Miriam Makeba, I recommend this one.
Majestic Mama Africa.......2007-02-24
Miriam gives another fabulous performance with this cd. Her versatility and talent shine brilliantly song after song. No one expresses emotion and vitality like this lady.
A great musical instrumernt.......2006-08-20
I can't understand a word of it. But; her voice is a musical instrument as wonderful to hear as charlie parkers horn or george shearing's piano. A perfect evening a glass of fine wine and listening to the above.
Makeba at Her Best.......2003-08-01
Mariam Makeba was and is a legend. Her introduction of African style music to the United States during the 1960s and 70s opened the way for many groups playing and singing folk-style and pop-style music with an African flavor. What can I say, Makeba is just wonderful in this series of songs mostly sung in her native Zulu dialect. I was fascinated by the fact that the various Bantu related languages have taken on some of the click sounds used by the Khoisan-speaking "bushmen."
This recording, more than any other, seems to me to capture the spirit of Africa that failed to be crushed by political repression. If you like African music you will like this CD!
songs of infinite love.......2001-08-06
This collection features recordings made by Mariam Makeba from 1960 to 1965 in the USA. These recordings were responsible for the introduction of South African music to a larger international audience. Makeba's amazing personality shines through all of these songs, affirming her position as the queen of South Africa music. Later Makeba married one of the leaders of the Black Panthers, which caused the Authorities to deport her to Europe. Previous reviews mentioned "the retreat song" and "the click song" as outstanding. I love these songs but for me the second part of the CD (songs 12-24) is even more spectacular. A song of praise for Kenyan leader Jomo Kenyatta ("Pole Mze"), a song of love to the leading quatert of South African revolution - Subukwe, Lutuli, Mandela and Sisulu ("Nogqongqo" from 1965) and the everlasting "Kwazulu". Makeba delivers these with the utmost love that radiates straight into the heart. Through these songs I started to love South African music.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful music.......2007-05-25
This was the first time I had purchased anything by this Artist. I had heard the song "Perfect Day" as part of my granddaughters video of "Tales of Beatrix Potter series" in which this song was used. It was hauntingly beautiful and I sat and looked at the credits to see who had performed it. Her other songs are nice too, but especially love this tune.
Great singer / songwriter.......2007-05-13
I first heard Miriam Stockley while at work listening to a New Age internet radio station. Her voice instantly mesmerized me so naturally I did a search on her name and learned about her music. I ordered both CD's, Miriam and Second Nature, and I was pleased to find that I really enjoy almost every song on both CD's. Even the ones that are not my favorites are ok. Miriam has a beautiful voice and these albums seem to have a South African flavor to them which I find unique. I highly recommend both for your listening pleasure.
Miriam Stockley- Miriam.......2007-03-11
I first heard a cut from this CD on Internet Radio and became determined to hear the entire product. In fact, I bought two copies, one for myself and one for a friend. Miriam has a beautiful, crystal clear voice. She emerges from being a background signer for other well know names, and presents a series of haunting songs that reflect her South African background. The rhythms alone are worth the price and Miriam's voice makes it a collectors item!
Why haven't I heard her name before?.......2007-03-07
It's sad how an artist of this magnitude is virtually unheard of in the American mass media... I guess we're too busy discussing private life of the talentless Britney... Anyhow, Miriam is truly amazing... Her angelic voice is a winning combination of Celine Dion without the lisp and Sarah Brightman without the pretense... It's amazing how beautiful of an instrument human voice can be... I love the the ethnic theme of the album as well... The only downfall - after "Forever my heart" it can only go down-hill (relatively speaking)... Perhaps saving the best for last would work better?... At least for me it would - it took me a long time to move on to song #2 - I couldn't stop listening to "Forever my heart" for hours...
Not same style as Perfect Day.......2007-01-22
This is not done in the same feel or style as "Perfect Day". I suspect that was just a marketing ploy including it in the cd. For what it is, howver, the music is very well done and still imspires the spirit. But again do not expect it to be the same as Perfect Day, totally different style of music.

For right-minded buyers of the reissued Muppet Christmas Carol soundtrack, the odds of disappointment are about as remote as Miss Piggy's chances with Kermit. If you loved the movie, you will love the loopy mayhem of the Muppet Brass Buskers ("Good King Wenceslas"), the cartoonish malice of the black-hearted misanthropes Marley & Marley ("Marley & Marley"), and the hope-swollen harmonies of Tiny Tim and Family ("Bless Us All"), Muppeted here to hilariously humble effect. If, on the other hand, your interest in this disc has more to do with its inclusion in the way-narrow Christmas-record-for-kids category--if the spirit of the season doesn't extend, for you, to the magic of the Muppets--you may want to keep browsing, as it's a soundtrack first (overture, instrumentals, and all) and a Christmas CD second. That's not to suggest you're stuck with an un-fun disc should it land on your holiday stack without a prior screening, though. Miles Goodman's score sweeps and inspires, and certain tracks--"One More Sleep 'til Christmas" and "Fozziwig's Party"--are future classics. (Note to the right-minded: After a misstep on the original release, Martina McBride's version of "When Love is Gone" is back.) -Tammy La Gorce

Finally released.......2007-05-23
If your Christmas isn't complete without listening to this music, this CD is a must buy. The audio quality is excellent despite the age of the film. Michael Cain and Belle come out crystal clear in their solo and ensemble work. The surprise of this album is the inclusion of two tracks (one by Beaker and Bunson and one by Scrogge's primary school teacher) that are not in the film. They are fun but unexpected. I could only ask that the CD last longer with such beautiful traditional music, but alas there is no more music to include. Maybe they could market Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island together in the future?
Good CD.......2007-02-14
My wife has been looking for this soundtrack for years. We were very happy to find it and get it so fast. This has some of the best music ever written for a movie.
the muppet christmas carol cd.......2007-01-19
Amazing the songs are so cleaver and i have bee waiting for this for a long time, it has been out of print great cd and the movie is so awesome!!
Holiday Classic with Kermit , Miss Piggy, and Michael Caine.......2007-01-12
The score from The Muppet Christmas Carol is full of the spirit of Christmas. The familiar story by Dicken's is given new life with the great score (mostly written by Paul Williams). Great energy is relayed to the listener as Scrooge (Michael Caine)is painted in words and as Bob Cratchet (Kermit the Frog) sings with his co-workers 'One More Sleep 'Til Christmas'. The love song duet between Scrooge (Michael Caine) and his fiancee during a ghostly vision brings great pathos to the character. For lovers of the Muppets and or Dickens, there is no better way to enter into the spirit of the season.
Awesome.......2007-01-08
These are some of the most heartwarming songs. I even find myself singing the ones about poor Mr. Scrooge.

Still Wonderful After All These Years.......2003-03-18
Not having heard this music for years (ok, decades), I was keeping my fingers crossed that the these songs would sound as terrific as I remembered. They do! Perhaps the original "world music" artist, Ms. Makeba's sound is timeless. From soothing lullaby to rousing wedding night serenade (the "Click Song" - hint: I don't think it's advice about joint checking accounts), these selections will bring you to your feet. Why did I wait so long to buy this CD?!
Makeba the Magnificent!.......2002-07-12
I gasped when I saw this CD cover!
The two albums featured on this CD, "Miriam Makeba" and "The World of Miriam Makeba," were favorites of my mother when I was a little girl growing up on the south side of Chicago in the sixties. Mom played them so constantly I came to (phonetically) know most of the songs by heart by the age of nine, precociously singing along to "The Click Song," "Pole Mze," "Little Boy" and "Tonados De Media Noche"--to the great amusement of grown-up family members and guests. I was delighted to discover a Makeba CD featuring not just one but both albums and ordered it immediately, waiting impatiently for its arrival. Upon receiving it I eagerly placed it on my CD player, happily pressed PLAY, sat back smiling as my childhood came floating back to me...
...and was startled, puzzled and more than a little disappointed to discover what appears to have been an error or mix-up for one of the albums.
Though "The World of Miriam Makeba" contained all of the wonderful songs I remembered from my mother's album, many of the selections included for "Miriam Makeba" seem to me to be from a different Makeba record entirely!
Enjoyable as they are, I don't at all recall cuts like "The Naughty Little Flea" or "Olilili" or "Where Does It Lead?" etc., being on either original album, whereas songs like the playful "Can't Cross Over," the dreamy, sensual "(Love Tastes Like) Strawberries" and the heartbreaking lullaby (where a crooning mother consoles a hungry child--there is nothing to eat) "Ntjilo Ntjilo" are absent entirely--what happened here??
Even so, Makeba's voice is so strong and beautiful, and her command of her South African and international material so absolute, that regardless I have to give this collection at least four stars. Only the odd and annoying absence of the aforementioned and other remembered songs keeps this from being a five-star rave.
Buy, listen and decide for yourselves.
