New Times Miami
There are dance-floor superstars, and in this upper stratosphere of big beats, Los Angeleno DJ Dan is a stealth bomber.

Product Description
DJ Dan is without a doubt one of America's most beloved DJs. Clubber's coast to coast have revered in Dan's skillful DJ sets and have come to love his unpretentious, always-positive attitude. On his latest double-disc mix CD, Lift, Dan wanted to showcase various facets of his musical personality. "The vibe on CD One is very get-the-party-started!," Dan explains. The journey begins in a fun, funky house vein with playful, sexy selections like "Love for the Weekend" - a collaboration between Dan and Toronto-based producer Hatiras - and Seamus Haji's explosive remake of "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life," then takes a turn towards electro flavors (the throbbing Rock Your World by DLG), before dipping back into funky house for a smooth landing.

With the second disc, Dan takes a different tack. It begins with the glamorous "Superstars" by Loose Cannons, slowing down the tempo subtly while maintaining high energy levels via fat, electro grooves like the chunky "Shake It" from DJ Rooster and Sammy Peralta. At a pivotal, mid-set peak, Dan drops his own Acid Dub remix of New Order's "Krafty," which chugs ahead like a greased locomotive, barreling into a final segment of darker, hypnotic, tech-house cuts courtesy of producers like Who's Who and The Drill.

Canada's Godspeed You Black Emperor raise the ante on their already ambitious orchestral rock by releasing a double CD of material as their second full-length album. The group combines the drums and guitar of typical rock-band instrumentation with horns and strings to create a music built around drones and slowly evolving melodic figures. It rises and falls from delicate introductory passages to unabashed grand climaxes. Their juxtaposition of drums with violins and lush romantic tonality brings to mind Rachel's, but their compositional scale and the pounding repetitive intensity of their dynamic peaks evoke Glenn Branca's The Ascension. Although the two discs are indexed at only two 21-minute tracks each, the package includes a handy road map to the movements into which each is subdivided. The opening piece starts with five minutes of a 15-beat circular melodic pattern that is gradually embellished as the volume swells to an ecstatic roar. The release drops down to a pastoral drone that rebuilds to support an acid-etched guitar solo, which in turn yields to a unified 4/4 kraut rock pound that eventually explodes, leaving behind field recordings of public announcements mingled with wandering late-night Swell Maps piano. The other pieces use a similar set of sonic building blocks to take the listener on comparable journeys. Fans of Godspeed's previous work will be very happy, and the curious might want to hop on board as well. --Bob Bannister

5 out of 5 stars a masterpiece.......2007-06-16

GYBE are probably the best live band I have ever seen and this is their masterpiece. A very ambitious record that succeeds in making you close your eyes and just listen to the music.

3 out of 5 stars Long drifting soundscape.......2007-05-07

(please ignore number rating, I don't generally find them meaningful)

"Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" by Godspeed You Black Emperor is a long sequence of shifting soundscapes, mainly instrumental, but with some recorded speech and other effects. Rather like walking along a beach where the buildings and so forth on the shoreline change every few miles, (I mean it's structured that way, not that it has any seashore sounds). Its the sort of thing I might have playing in the background that requires little concentration. I didn't find it rythmically, melodically or harmonically interesting ... but I guess the point is the whole sonic sequence, which you might like.

5 out of 5 stars As close to divinity as possible..........2007-04-15

I don't know how anyone can give this record a bad review. From the second I heard the first note, I could tell I was in for a ride...just how deep and magical a ride was unknown.

This album as stated before, is best listened to all at once...no interuptions, no lights...just you and the music. People have also talked about 'God' in the same breath as Godspeed's music. This is not far off. I am not a religious person and don't believe in the traditional God, yet this music has a mystical and spiritual feel to it that is completely divine in nature.

Let it be said that this is not for everybody. A lot of people will feel bored with some of it and feel it's too long. These people have obviously been brought up on verse chorus, cookie cutter music for far too long and can't appriciate the amazing progression that is necessary for the music.

I know it is one piece of music, but my favorite track is 'Sleep'. That piece just has a grip on me and wont let go. Please do yourself a favor and BUY this record. OFF.

2 out of 5 stars Greatness, interrupted........2007-01-06

I held off for years before buying this intriguing piece of music, only to discover that I had made a big mistake ... not in waiting so long, but in buying it whatsoever.

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., once submitted this two word review of Joseph Heller's novel Something Happened: "Nothing does." After reading one flattering review after another of this disc and this band, I placed disc one in my player with great anticipation of the layer upon layer of swelling musical ideas that would build up to powerful summit after powerful summit. Alas, what I hear is Hearts-of-Space-ish chord washes and minimalist instrument progressions that -- just when the drums kick in and the guitar gets a little noisy and a slight bit of hummable melody introduces itself -- sadly, slithers back into ten more minutes of aimless droning.

So many other musicians do longform musical ideas so much better -- seek out live Praxis, or even At War With Self and the Gordian Knot discs. Godspeed You Black Emperor may be sexy on paper, but in the reality of my headphones it is a veritable plain Jane.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2006-11-04

Music like this is so rare. Music so mapped out, so layered, so etheral... This album is an experience. It isn't a collection of songs. It's a series of movements that form an orchestral piece. When listening to it you feel as if you're in another world; a barren landscape plagued by destruction and an impending apocolypse. Yet, despite this, there are still areas of light and hope.

When listening to this album, do it all at once. Don't start on track 2 of disc 1 or track 1 of disc 2... Play it all in succession. This is the best way to fully appreciate what you're listening to.

Also, this album may take a little while to sink in. But when it does, it will be one of the greatest things you've ever heard.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

Performed by a Miles Davis-fronted European band for a movie by Louis Malle, this music helped define the sound of film noir. It made viewers think the genre's films had always sounded just so, with slow-walking bass beats and muted, slithering horn lines miming the characters on the screen--and underlining their emotions. The melodies here are brief fragments, sometimes rising up only to disappear and then briefly return. This is Miles playing in the moment, improvising musical impressions as he watched the screen. And what he played managed to capture the era of postwar everywhere, while it offered Davis the freedom to test his on-the-spot compositional skills within a minimalist context. How many other beboppers who worked within the shadow of Charlie Parker could have ever recorded these little gems? --John Szwed

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Paris. 1957. Miles Davis. There's a recipe for greatness.......2007-03-21

In 1957, Louis Malle was 24 years. He was filthy rich. Incredibly handsome. And prodigiously talented --- he had already co-directed and shot Jacques Cousteau's Oscar-winning documentary, "The Silent World." Now he was ready to make his first feature.

He chose an overlooked noir novel about a man who kills his lover's husband, only to get trapped in the elevator while fleeing. His car gets stolen; complications multiply. Meanwhile, we --- and his lover --- wait to see if he'll get free before the police arrive.

Malle co-authored a clever, stylish script. He gave the film an ironic title: "Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud," or "Elevator to the Gallows." As the lover, he hired Jeanne Moreau, a successful but not incendiary stage actress. And as his cinematographer, he chose the young innovator, Henri Decae.

And then this first-time director got Miles Davis to improvise and record the soundtrack.

Davis was then at the pinnacle. He had revolutionized jazz once already. Now he was turning away from hard-charging bursts of sound to a cooler, modal style that would change the dominant style of American jazz once again.

What could he have possibly seen in Louis Malle?

Fun.

"I was in Paris to play as a guest soloist for a few weeks," Davis later explained. "I met Louis through Juliette Greco. He told me he had always loved my music. I agreed to write the musical score for his film because it was a great learning experience --- I had never written a music score for a film before."

Davis didn't really "write" this one, either. Oh, he said he "looked at the rushes of the film and got musical ideas to write down." But his real genius was in hiring the great American jazz drummer Kenny Clarke and three French musicians and putting them in an environment that mirrored the mood of the movie. As Davis recalled: "Since it was about a murder and was supposed to be a suspense movie, I used this old, gloomy, dark building where I had the musicians play. I thought it would give the music atmosphere, and it did."

The soundtrack was recorded in a single, champagne-fueled session as Moreau and Malle looked on. At one point, a bit of Davis's lip blew into his mouthpiece; he pressed on. There were repeated takes of certain ideas; a number of tracks on the soundtrack are variations of earlier cuts.

No matter. This is one of the greatest jazz soundtracks in film --- some say the greatest. The trumpet couldn't be more evocative: mostly slow and breathy, thoughtful and tender, lonely and okay about it. In a word: cool. The quintessence of cool.

There was much to praise about the film, It used Paris like nothing before it; Malle presaged the New Wave. The final shot was made with a cameraman in a wheelchair; it proved that filmmakers could shoot at night without massive equipment. The film made Jeanne Moreau a movie star. And it launched Louis Malle's brilliant career.

The irony of the Malle-Davis collaboration is that Malle never explored noir again --- indeed, he made it a point to direct only one movie per genre. But the ideas of composition that Davis was working out in this movie soundtrack would come to full bloom a few years later, in his classic Kind of Blue (with John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly and Bill Evans).

The soundtrack, mesmerizing and evocative at the time, has become more important as the years go by. It's a thrilling artifact and a deep experience for the serious jazz fan. And if you're shallow like me --- if you like music without lyrics at dinner --- you get two CDs for the price of one. The first is about the airy beauty of the music. The second is about guests asking what they're listening to.

In this case, your friends will know who's on that trumpet. But they'll have no idea this soundtrack even exists. Which makes you fractionally as cool as Miles.

5 out of 5 stars little known miles davis.......2007-01-20

This CD is fantastic and hard to find at retail stores. I highly advise any Miles Davis fan buys it.

5 out of 5 stars What a great soundtrack!.......2007-01-19

My son watched this movie a few times. After about the fourth time he said to me, you know why I watch this movie, it's because of the music. It's so incredible that I can't get enough of it. So I purchased the soundtrack for a Christmas present and I have to say it's one of the best CD's I have ever heard. I had no idea who was on this CD because I never watched the movie. When it arrived and I saw it was Miles Davis I said well that's why it's so great. We suggest to whomever is a fan of Miles to purchase this CD and find out for yourself. Peace to all.

5 out of 5 stars Dope.......2007-01-07

This album makes you feel like a private eye. Film noir all the way.

5 out of 5 stars Echo in the right places.......2006-10-22

For those of you who are old enough to remember the Columbia LP with "On Green Dolphin Street," "Fran-Dance" and "Stella by Starlight" on one side and the soundtrack of ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS on the other, here is a more precise description of the tracks on this CD: the last 10 tracks, 17 to 26, are the soundtrack with echo that you remember from the LP. The other tracks, 1 to 16, are either alternate takes or takes identical to the echo takes, but without the echo. So, the soundtrack as you remember it is safely included on this disc. I used my CDR to record tracks 17 to 26 twice. I then used track 18, "The murder of Carala," as the final song of my mix, because Track 26 doesn't sound good as the finale. To my ear Miles Davis's sound is captured better here than on KIND OF BLUE. This is a superb mood album, very nocturnal and mysterious, as other reviewers have said. Above all, it could not have been made by any artist of any period except Miles Davis. This adds to its distinction. When the session was over, Miles Davis said, "I'll never do this again." Fortunately for us, he did it once, brilliantly.

5 out of 5 stars A Listening Treat .......2007-03-08

What a delight to listen to this collection of pure Rutter ! The melodic sounds of the Cambridge Singers bring me such pleasure The sheer joyfulness of this music is to me a religious experience of such depth It is superb and will lift ones spirits instantly. highly recommended to all lovers of the English contemporary choral sound and scene,____ not to be missed

5 out of 5 stars Be Thoy My Vision CD.......2007-02-19

My husband sang many of these John Rutter compositions with his church choir, and this CD is perfect since the choir is directed by Rutter, singing his own music. If you love religious music, this will bring tears to your eyes, the choir is "that" perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Really good, but don't listen to it all at once........2007-01-07

I really liked this CD. It really showcases Rutter's knack for religious choral music. Perhaps it helps that I have sung some of his stuff with various groups. However, as with any similar compiliation, the composer's sameness of style and motif becomes apparent. This repetition can become boring on the third or fourth listening. On the other hand, this makes a great reference tool for any choral director or performer. Buy it, however, it's worth it, but don't listen to it all at once.

5 out of 5 stars A must for choral music fans.......2006-09-19

Simply fabulous, 10/10. These are all Rutter-composed pieces, directed by Rutter himself. If you have any interest in religious choral music at all, you must get this album! One of the highlights of my musical life was attending a concert of a University of Maryland choir in which my mom sang, that featured Rutter as a guest conductor. Listening to this album is almost as good! ;-) There are too many good pieces to start naming all of my favorites, but these are some of the best known ones: "Open Thou Mine Eyes", "A Gaelic Blessing", "All Things Bright and Beautiful", "As the Bridegroom to His Chosen", "For the Beauty of the Earth", and "The Lord Bless You and Keep You".

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection of Rutter's hymns.......2005-11-22

I sought a recording of Rutter's beautiful hymn, "Wings of the Morning", after we sang this lovely tune in church and this was the only CD I could find that contained it.

This collection includes many of Rutter's church hymns recorded over a period of 20 years performed by The Cambridge Singers, a group of Brits, that are conducted by the composer. Ergo, these performances must be considered definitive.

Many of Rutter's popular hymns are included here. "O be joyful to the Lord" and "All things bright and beautiful", a popular children's hymn done here by adults, follow "Wings of the morning" on tracks 5-7. Others you may have performed in church represented here are "O clap your hands", "Lord make me an instrument of your peace", "For the beauty of the earth", "Look at the world" and "The Lord bless you and keep you" among the 21 assembled hymns.

While The Cambridge Singers, on their Web site, identify themselves principally as an a capella group, I was pleased when I received this CD to find all the hymns supported by a full orchestra, the esteemed City of London Sinfonia. The renditions are uniformly lovely although some listeners may find the singing a bit on the white side lacking brilliance and individuality. Everything is done in keeping with Rutter's score markings and style.

The recording tends to be a little variable given the 20-plus year difference in performances. The most recent copyright listing is 2003, the same year "Wings of the morning" was published. I don't hear an appreciable difference in that recording than the others but still hear some age in older works.

If you seek a Rutter hymn collection you can't go wrong here. You have wonderful English performers mated to the composer in his more popular works. I'd recommend this without reservation to anyone seeking this collection.

-gave this as a Christmas gift to my brother-in-law, a church musician. He has listened over & over & thinks it is really outstanding. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars The heavens are telling.......2005-10-21

This is a very great chorus, and one of Haydn's best as far as i am concerned. The pace, grandness and spirit of the piece all conjure in one's imagination the majesty of heaven, and God's throne. I cannot help but be moved to praise the God of the heavens and the earth.

5 out of 5 stars Uncle Abe rattles the house with this thing.......2004-11-22

I came home from work one day when my uncle was visiting my wife and myself. He was recently retired from the ministry. He had heard a lot of choral music in his life. My aunt said he had the stereo ( power end of my stereo at the time was an Adcomm 555 amp. conservatively rated at 200 watts RMS per channel) up so loud it was rattling the whole house. I too have come to love this music. I mostly listen to rock and roll; but the way my uncle, and now I, play this thing, it is rock and roll from another era!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sir Robert with ASO and Chorus at their Best!.......2003-11-16

After Mr Shaw spent many years in NYC and Cleveland with RCA Red Label,he came into Atlanta for a big change! Soon he switched to TELARC DIGITAL! I still Joyfully remember our Recording of the Christmas Nativity in Dec of 1975! Sir Robert, conducting with earphones encasing his head shouted: "Stop the taping, there is some Darn Sizzling noise in those Lights!" We may have not heard the word "Damn" lights, that he employed at times!

On both this newer release of TELARC and the older Recording of The Christmas Nativity, there are Bach's Chorale, Break Forth, Dona Nobis Pacem from the B-Minor Mass, Handel's Hallelujah! Plus the exquisite, Shepherds's Farewell to the Holy Family of Berlioz's The Infant Christ!

Those who may not be familiar with Berlioz from both recordings, will be richly rewarded by hearing them plus the Rex Tremendae from Berlioz''s Requiem and the other Kyrie from the Bach B-Minor! Absolutely, no other Christmas Music can ever approach these two splendid recordings, which are the basis of the ASO celebrating every Christmas with "Robert Shaw in the Spirit!"

5 out of 5 stars Celestial melodies.......2001-05-27

No matter what mood you are in, the gorgeous chorals will draft you through the paths of holiness, and you will find yourself situated in the Elysium, land of eternal joy, yet you are far from dead. The past grief, weariness, and worries will fade and torture your soul no more. You are set free.

Unfortunately, Nobody can be told what this heavenly experience is like. You have to listen to it yourself.

5 out of 5 stars This Collection Never Gets Old.......2006-05-09

My old friend Ron Kenoly is at his best on Lift Him Up. Not that anything hs has done is inferior to this, but THIS collection captures him at his most fun as well as his most reverent, in my humble opinion! He and the band are clearly enjoying themselves, enjoying the music and enjoying their experience collectively as they worship together.

Bass player Abraham Laboriel, who has played for George Benson, Chet Atkins, Chick Corea, Randy Crawford, Ruben Blades, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Sheena Easton,Aretha Franklin, Herbie Hancock, Amy Grant, Chaka Khan,Gladys Knight, Manhattan Transfer, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder and a host of others, really brings a strong flavor to this whole album experience. From urban to island to straight out worship music, you'll find yourself enjoying the music, the arrangements and the talent of Ron and each of his hand picked musicians - even if you're not a Christian. This is one Christian album that stands on its own musically and lyrically as well as inspirationally. I got this one when it first came out and still pop it in the car whenever I need a boost and a lift!

Very good CD for those moments when you want to be alone with God and lose yourself in worshipping Him.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, Spiritual CD. A must buy !.......2000-04-21

Ron Kenoly has done it again ----- to led me to a new high spiritual level. The songs are very meaningful and powerful. The musicians are superb. The high and low notes of the music are very clear. And I like the way Abraham plays his bass.

Keith Lockhart might very well be the Backstreet Boy of classical music. With good looks, a ton of energy, and--most importantly--popular appeal, he leads the Boston Pops Orchestra through disc after disc of Americana compositions (and the odd Celtic title). A Splash of Pops is more of the same. The Boston Pops get downright patriotic by playing everything from Paul Simon's "America" to "Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy," along with a few classical compositions (for example, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture). It's a light affair loaded with saccharine energy, but a few surprises (the overture to State Fair and the new "With Voices Raised," commissioned from the authors of Ragtime: the Musical) are thrown in to keep things interesting. For another sampling of Americana-based classical music, fans should seek out Leonard Bernstein conducting Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring with the New York Philharmonic. It's one of America's greatest recordings and a truer testament to the country's musical wealth. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars? More like 50 stars!.......2003-06-16

Keith Lockhart has continued behind the heels of John Williams at the helm of the Boston Pops Orchestra in extraordinary fashion since 1995. Anyone who has been privileged to see him conduct the Boston Pops can feel the enthusiasm he has for the orchestra's traditions and legacy- and for classical music. This theme certainly holds true for this CD. I have been collecting a set of good CDs for my 4th of July outdoor parties for the past few years and this one delivers in grand style.

I purchased this CD shortly after its release. The jewel cover alone will put a smile on your face and set the tone for summer's light-hearted, relaxed attitude. The front cover picture is of Mr. Lockhart, complete in tuxedo, splashing into a pool of water and the back cover picture of him in a BPO t-shirt and Hawaiian shirt being kissed by a stuffed clown fish he's holding with a pair of barbecue tongs. Fun, fun, fun! Bravo, Mr. Lockhart!

All the "classics" one would expect to hear for the patriotic holiday are here: "The Star Spangled Banner and "America The Beautiful (The Tanglewood Festival Chorus singing these two songs will give you the chills), "The 1812 Overture" (I can almost "see" the fireworks as BPO plays the finale), and "The Stars And Stripes Forever" (One cannot pass through the 4th of July without hearing at least one John Phillip Sousa song!).

The rest of the album is equally as entertaining with goodies like "Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy." Others will also rouse your patriotic fevor such as: "Doodletown Fifers" (Fifes on the 4th? Of course!) and "America" (Paul Simon's wonderful song.) One of my favorites is "With Voices Raised." The Boston Pops plays background as the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, The Boston Pops Choir, and The Boston Gay Men's Choir sing and speak eloquent quotes from famous Americans as Abigal Adams, Martin Luther King, Fredrick Douglas, President John F. Kennedy, and Shirley Chisholm.

I have collected five CDs that get playtime over Independence Day through the day and evening. Ever since I purchased "Splash of Pops," though, it seems to get a bit more airing each year. You'll be dazzled and feel proud, happy, and content everytime you listen to it. Mr. Lockhart has produced some wonderful albums with the Pops Orchestra and he has certainly continued with this collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars America's Best Proove It.......2000-06-19

This is truly a Boston Pops recording at its best. Keith Lockhart and the Pops are definetly my favorite Orchestra, and with this CD I am reminded of exactly why. This Orchestra brings to life the power and passion that was ment in the writing of this music. I especially like "Lift Every Voice and Sing." The Pops and the Chorus truly bring out the joy and pain felt by African Americans throughout the years. And I also very much enjoy "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." Few Orchestras can swing like the Pops.

All in all if you love the power and emotion of Orchestras, than you will love hearing America's Orchestra earn its name. Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra out do themselves this time.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably totally terriffic.......1999-08-18

This is almost a good as being in Symphony Hall in Boston or on the Esplanade with the stars overhead. The quality is outstanding; you are there! A must have especially if you like patriotic song. Don't hesitate...run!

5 out of 5 stars Keith does it again! A definate winner!.......1999-08-07

Bravo! The young and handsome Keith Lockhart is wonderful. Not only does he look adorable on the c.d. covers, but he is also bringing even more poularity to this already famous ensemble. I always look forward to seeing his fourth of July program on t.v. and now I get to hear it any time I want to. This is the third album of him conducting the B.P.O. I own and I'll keep buying them. This is the ultimate album for Americans and patriotic folk. I strongly recommend it to all as a fan of Keith and a faithful New Englander (even though I now reside in the south).

1 out of 5 stars get Kunzel instead.......1999-07-14

I don't understand the fascination with this young conductor. Everything he's doing has been done better by Erich Kunzel. If your not familier with Kunzel's work then try his name in amazon's search engine. He's made over 60 albums, most of them for Telarc, an American record company that makes the best sounding cd's available today

5 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Release.......2007-05-16

My boyfriend is a HUGE DJ Dan fan and this is his favorite album. We usually don't agree on music but I love this cd too. I don't usually review music but I just wanted to say that this is an amazing cd because I was honestly shocked to see people dissing on it.
We love the beats and the rap in "make them shake it" is awesome- that's my favorite track. The beats are techno but the lyrics are more house. I find other DJ Dan albums a little boring. The use of more vocals I really enjoy. We listen to this cd before we go out on the town in Miami and it gets us so pumped up!

1 out of 5 stars DJ DAN....Gone Wrong!.......2007-04-05

I actually heard about this release a while back, but since I'm a big-time Dan supporter, I had to buy this to add to my collection of his sets. This is one set I would like to forget about. DJ Dan has been known for his Up-tempo,Funky-Tech-House & Filtered-Disco styles throughout, now he comes out with some mind-twisting Electro trash, which is annoying, some Traditional House DJ's such as the undercover agents-SF (JT & Lance) & Donald Glaude have swiched over to this style and I think it's a shame, as these DJ's have lifted the House scene & treated the headz for years. If your a true funky house-head, check out Mark Farina's new OM release and Migel Migs as well, but stay away from this disc and Electro-trash as well

5 out of 5 stars I'm addicted to..........2007-02-12

Track 5, 1st disc: "The Big Rinse." Love the beat, melody, and that weird bass like effect that goes "wah wah wah..."

5 out of 5 stars Filthy Dirty Electro House.......2007-01-15

Such Good sets...so good I had to buy some of the tracks on vinyl so I could play them myself!

2 out of 5 stars wtf?.......2007-01-09

I bought this CD without listening to the tracks because DJ Dan has had some very great CD's. However, after listening to Lift 2, I can honestly say that I am disappointed. DJ Dan is known for his funk, but this CD was pretty much electronica. Had I known, I surely would never have bought this CD. If you are a fan of funky house, stay away from this one!

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Just a year after their smash breakthrough debut album--itself still riding high in the charts--the Irish Tenors have added another delightfully varied collection to their discography. Live in Belfast again showcases the group's obvious concert charisma from a performance given in February 2000. It's a generous smorgasbord of medleys, traditional numbers, and songs from popular sources (including "Scorn Not His Simplicity," which Sinead O'Connor has interpreted)--mixing nostalgic sentimentality with selections of bittersweet melancholy. Binding the whole together is the unmistakable stylish charm of the Irish Tenors, whether singing in solos or in ensembles. But the biggest surprise for fans already hooked on the Tenors is the introduction of Finbar Wright as replacement for original member John McDermott. Wright's bright, romantic voice easily wins over a potentially skeptical crowd--especially in the dreamy "Isle of Innisfree"--and blends nicely with his colleagues. (McDermott, who had to bow out of the performance due to the death of his mother, makes a surprise appearance to solo in a memorable and touching "The Last Rose of Summer"--given as a tribute to his parents--and to rejoin the Tenors for "Red Is the Rose.") The arrangements by Tenors producer Frank McNamara are played with zest by the Orchestra Warsaw Sinfonia. --Tom May

5 out of 5 stars Great Music and Outstanding Voices.......2007-03-28

My wife and I saw these tenors live and on stage and we were truly impressed. Their voices blend beautifully and they present a well rounded variety of songs. We so enjoyed the first CD that we bought this current one.

5 out of 5 stars Time for a new one.......2001-10-19

I bought this CD, (plus the video) in July 2000 and listened to it so much I think it must be just about worn out.!!!The video I have seen so often I bet I have seen every idiosyncrasy of each of them. The Tenors are almost my total pastime. About 12 hours a day, listening and viewing. I "met" them July 22/00 and have been to four concerts, and I'm still impressed by the joyous sounds of their voices.
It's been a lomg time since I wrote my last review of this CD, but I hope I have helped to encourage others to enjoy the thrill of the most magnificent voices of their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music, wonderful voices.......2001-05-31

I do not claim to be a musical expert. It has always been my contention that music which makes the listener feel good, which raises the spirits and makes the heart glad, is worthy of being heard. Such is this CD. I don't listen to it to search for flaws, flubs, failings and screw-ups. I listen to it because it makes me happy. I am of Irish ancestry, and this wonderful music stirs a core deep within my soul. I got to hear some traditional Irish folk music I'd never heard before. I would hope that all those who listen to this CD would choose to enumerate its merits based on the fact that this music is meant to lighten the soul. It never was meant to be held up to intense scrutiny, because it is folk music. These are the songs the people sang. They weren't meant to be grand, classical opera, and should not be regarded or critiqued as such. They are beautiful and moving, just as they stand, and I am grateful that God gave these four men such voices to sing these old tunes and to preserve them for the generations to come. God knows we need positive, beautiful music now more than ever.

4 out of 5 stars Professional on professionals.......2001-05-05

I am taking from the best in the world. I have met Pavarotti's teachers (Joan Doanerman and Joan Sutherland) and also take from them. I am very well-known in musical analyzing and teaching. I have read all reviews, and personally, many of you need to learn much more about proper vocal technique to be a critic. The voice must flow, with support (breath), low larynx, etc. All four tenors possess the proper singing qualities. However, stage presence, song interpretation, and musicianship also take into affect. Finbar Wright needs to continue his musicianship. He possesses much more romanticism than he shows. Also, anyone can say words like "texturing, spellbinding and dominance," and sound like a knowledgeable critic. However, these words are thrown into sports review as well. Face it folks, know what you are saying. John McDermott has a beautiful voice, but it is a much different classical style than many people know. John is a Celtic Tenor, which means that his under- and overtones will sound much different than the other three. The symphony is NOT too dominant, David Schierholz. If you have worked with the Met recording studios, than you can talk with me, because I have sat in on them. These are live performances, not takes in a studio. Folks, I am a born and bred Irishman. These men are great, but there needs to be more of there individual literature available. I would love to find Anthony Kearns classical recordings. Then, when you have studied and understand the nature of the voice and theatre, then you can write your reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Tenners for Tenors.......2001-02-16

This cd and video was my introduction to the wonderful "Irish Tenors". Seperately each is spellbinding. Together they are nothing short of magical. Finbar Wright is a dashingly romantic figure while Ronan Tynan is most compelling. Anthony Kearns will be a major star someday in the opera world. His voice is clear and strong. Wright's voice soars in songs such as "Carrickfergus" and "Isle of Innisfree". He seems a bit nervous which is understandable given he had only 10 days to prepare for this concert. He was asked literally days before the performance to step in for John McDermott. Thank goodness he did! The one downer for me was the appearance of John McDermott as his voice is not my cup of tea.
