What do you do if you're musically inclined in the strip-malled hell of Orlando, Florida? Since you're not exactly in a hotbed for good music, you've really no other choice than to spin your own. So goes the story of DJ Icey, one of the rave generation's most revered spin doctors. He sprang up in the early '90s, when every club kid wanted to hear, make, and buy old-school breaks. Icey was one of the few who actually followed through on this desire, which led to Mixmag's crowning him the King of Funky Breaks in 1998. Now that he's started his own record label (Zone Records), played at countless warehouse parties, and produced many of his own tracks and remixes, Icey proudly releases his Essential Mix disc. Following in the footsteps Fatboy Slim, Pete Tong, and Paul Oakenfold, Icey's contribution to the Essential Series is a cost-efficient and hassle-free way to bring a world-renowned DJ-producer into your own living room. Icey assembled an A-list cast of contributors for this mix: Orbital, Tsunami One, Sabres of Paradise, David Holmes, and Timo Maas all make appearances, as does Icey himself. Not bad for a self-made kiddie-rave DJ. --Courtney Reimer

With this hugely entertaining Classic Edition collection, Grandmaster Flash (a founding father of hip-hop and turntablism) has fashioned an indispensable release. Evoking big cars, bad suits, disco balls, and intensive hedonism, Flash fuses dancefloor stormers with wistful bits of yesteryear. The mix twists and turns, from Positive Force's "We Got the Funk" to James Brown's "Give It Up or Turn It Loose," before Flash drops "You're the One for Me" by D-Train. Every cut induces severe booty shake or warm and fuzzy nostalgia--or both, best illustrated when Blondie's "Rapture" segues into the marvelous "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" by InDeep. Every half-serious music lover should own some Grandmaster Flash, for no collection is complete without him. --Steffan Chirazi

Featuring the pivotal dance hits 'I Can't Wait' by Nu-Shooz, 'Rapture' by Blondie, 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' by Indeep and many more! 2002.

A Must-have for O'Skoolers.......2005-09-17
This is the best compilation CD I've ever heard!!! If you're 31 and over you must have this. This definitely makes me reminisce about my younger days when hip hop was in its infant stages. The ultimate B-Boy jam, Jimmy Castor's "It's just begun", is reason enough. Don't wait any longer to add to your collection. ONE!!!!!!
Flash-a true master.......2004-05-23
Grandmaster Flash is truly the DJ of all time and he definitely proved it by releasing this breathtaking mix.A true pioneer and creator of "The Message". The guy was obviously light years ahead of everyone back then as well as today. This mix starts off with Flash's cool intro changing into Nu Shooz-I cant wait. The mixmaster includes The Fatback Band-I found Lovin' which had one of the tightest beats for 1984.Flash also includes monster tracks such as D-Train's you're the one for me,Indeep's Last night a Dj saved my life as well as Afrika Bambataas' Planet Rock where he adds some of his own scratching in a phenomenal way. I also had a chance to see him live in SF a few months ago and i honestly lost my mind. If you are into this kind of music(best there ever was unlike today's waste)you have to buy this cd. A true classic with over 70 minutes of the best mixing and scratching. The Flash is the best Dj of all time.
Fortunately, He Still Got Love For Da Game!.......2004-05-09
Since I've purchased this CD, it has hardly ever left my car, much less my CD player. Flash is on top of his game here. He includes such classics as "I Can't Wait" (Nu Shooz), ""Before I Let Go" (Maze), and "Rapture" (Blondie). This CD is a must have for those who love the genre. It will provide a nice flashback to the 80s and have your car mirror quakin' with some serious sounds. It is good to know that each song is mixed into the next one and Flash does not miss a beat.
Another seminal mix album from Grandmaster Flashý........2003-10-30
Not to be confused with "The Official Adventures of Grandmaster Flash" which still stands as one the greatest mix Album ever.....this is more of a personal introduction of music from the 80's era with a seminal track selection from the Grandmaster. And as soon as "Nu Shooz's - I Can't Wait" kicks of the proceedings, it just an amazing retrospection of why some of the 80's bands where held in such high regard. "Blondie" makes an appearance with one of her best tracks "Rapture" (where she was one of the first white females to rap), and "Indeep's - Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" disco-anthem, with the godfather of soul...'James Brown' appearing on "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose" providing the funk side of things, and not forgetting "Afrika Bambaataa's - Planet Rock" provides a non-stop catalogue of hits....obviously supremely mixed & Scratched by Grandmaster (who subtly mixes in the tracks, instead of grand scratch heavy introductions)....if you haven't bought a Grandmaster Flash album then buy "The Official Adventures of Grandmaster Flash"....but if you already have that (or can afford to buy two albums)..buy this as well, for a wonderfully insightful look at the music that influenced the Grandmaster.
summertime goodness.......2002-12-12
This CD is such a pick-me-up! In fact, I'd say it is one of my very favorite sunshine, summertime CDs. Flash keeps the mix moving with classic sing-along tracks that are all guaranteed to make you smile.

A veteran of the British dance-music scene, DJ Pete Tong proves with his first major-label mix release in the U.S. that experience means everything when it comes to calibrating the mood of the dance floor. Using a genuine dance lover's sense of pace and mood, Tong has constructed a mix that brings to mind Buenos Aires at 3 a.m., New York City at 3:30, or maybe just your own favorite living room dance space. Because quite simply, the likes of Trisco, Way Out West (a project of DJ Nick Warren's), and Blaze will not allow you to sit still.
It seems churlish to pick out peaks in a veritable mountain range of late-night classics, but perhaps only Tong could find the superb David Morales remix of Photek's "Mine to Give." Sister Bliss, featuring John Martyn's "Deliver Me" (Mix One-12" Mix), offers altitude, raw sex, and dirty dance-floor moves, while the freeway-burning "Futureshock" by Sparc happily pushes physical and mental accelerators to their limits. With Essential, Pete Tong has created a steamy, sensual, disco-fused house mix that doesn't deny the vitality of trance. --Steffan Chirazi

Great rhythms.......2005-07-10
First discovered Tong about 1 year ago. If you haven't heard his work yet, I would recommend this cd being a great place to start. One of my fav's track 1- Rui Da Silva "Touch me" is great for gettin down, Genesis- Cass, Digweed also mixes, is good also. Chase the sun- planet funk, really liked this one as well. I think this whole cd is music you can dance to, drive to or chill. If you're into other artists such as Digweed, Sasha, Oakenfold, you would for sure like Pete Tong.

Pete Tong rocks da house!.......2002-03-10
London DJ Pete Tong I first heard about five years ago. It was around the same time I first heard about the trance movement. This is an excellent mix of progressive house and trance arrangements! Heart pounding and soul awakening music for people who love to dance.
You will want to dance to the rythms, melodies and cross samplings produced by Tong on this CD. Among my faves are track #2 where he even uses the soundtrack from "American Beauty," track #10 and the soulful track #14 with Sister Bliss and John Martyn. If you want to pump up some irresistable grooves for a dance party -- this release is a sure hit!
Once again, Pete Tong blows me away!.......2002-02-05
I don't even have to review a CD of his, or listen to it online - because they are all great. He is not at all predictable on any of his CD's but always has outstanding track selection. He chooses beautiful vocals and mixes seamlessly as usual. If you are a fan of Pete Tong, this CD is a must in your collection. My husband and I fight over who gets which of his CDs in the car! The Rui da Silva and American Dream tracks are amazing. I could listen to this over and over, and I have! This is an outstanding work from a great DJ. I'm counting down 'til his latest is released. Once you hear Pete, you want more.
Insanity.......2001-09-28
When I bought this CD I was firing a complete shot in the dark. I read some of these reviews but had no idea what really to expect, because I don't always agree with the reviews I read. In this case, that shot in the dark turned out to be a bullseye! Great house mix. Track 4 alone is worth the purchase price. Listen to it & be prepared to move.
amazing Pete Tong.......2001-06-20
Pete Tong is my favourite dj....since i bought his first cd in 1998 i collect every essential mix that he does...His music is so exiting and always gives you tha change to chill out and fill the bit!come to Greece Pete!

You like dance music?....you BETTER have this !.......2005-05-11
Ok let me start off and say that this entire cd is dope, and flows to perfection. There are not many breaks cd's I can let play all the way through, because there is usually bits of boredom and dullness in between tracks, however;this is a huge exception. This is by far Icey's best and one of the best dance albums ever released. This albums full of electro and funky breaks, afterall thats what Icey is well known for."Essential Mix"will make you bust a move on the dancefloor,or keep driving for days, because you'll get lost in the incredible music. If there's one breaks cd besides Baby Anne's "Bass Queen in the Mix 1"I'd recommend it'd definetly be this one. What are you waiting for,go get it.
awesome mix.......2005-05-04
i bought this cd after a recommendation based on previously purchased cds. it was so cool to hear some of the samples as it reminded me of a younger time. i've never heard dj icey's mixes before, but after this purchase, i won't hesitate to give him another try.
there were lots of good breaks and beats. good music for driving fast.
Iceys best work.......2005-02-27
Buy this cd, every track on here is awesome. This was the first breaks cd i listened to, I still get goosebumps listening to KayCees-Escape.
One of the best CD's in my collection.......2003-11-17
Grrrreat techno ! This is by far the best Icey album out there, and gives "electro breaks"a new meaning by putting in some elements of house in the mix. This is one I highly recommend, and let the whole cd play you wont be dissapointed!
Essential Mix an Appropriate Name.......2002-03-20
...I absolutely love it!! There is a good variety of sounds and styles all blended into one nice long flowing groove. It's techno. It's dance. It's rave. It's house. It's funky. It's hard to stand still. (okay, so I'm not a professional music critic; but I am a music lover from WAY back!) The most notable tracks are "Purple" (infectious and upbeat), "Party Going On" (semi-euro housy Amsterdam meets Miami kind of thing), "Pumpin" (an interesting experience which eventually bursts into extreme dancefloor exhaultation at the 2 1/2 minute mark), and my favorite "Everyday" (excuse me, but is that a Diva in my living room? well then light the strobe and crank up the volume!!). Overall I would say it is an excellent CD and it satisfies the musical gypsy in me. I recommend it highly.

Not Quite.......2007-06-06
I had to check out some of Sander Kleinenberg's commercial releases on labels other than Global Underground and Renaissance. I never liked his hard techno and progressive trance sets, but after listening to disc 1 of his Nubreed album and both discs of Renaissance Presents Everybody I wanted to find more releases where he focuses primarily on mixing tracks from house genres.
This album is no where near the caliber of sets featured on the three discs mentioned above. Sure the set falls under a progressive house album, but it has the feel of his live sets where he mixes a lot of hard progressive trance tracks that tend lack of depth. Very mediocre track selection on this one.
3/5 stars for this effort.
Ok.......2006-09-26
This mix is okay. Not as progressive as other Sander K releases. The track selection isn't all that great. Comando Heaven is probably the best track.
Lacking outstanding track selection.......2005-12-14
as always, the dutchman comes through with quality mixxing talent. unfortunately for me, i felt there was a lack for outstanding musical selection. i didnt feel like there were any outstanding tracks... nothing with a unique and outstanding rhythm. i like progressive mixes, but i have to say this mix didn't progress to anything outstanding.
Really good mix.......2003-04-13
Good blend of tracks from your tribal to trance....although it kinda lagged toward the end. There's at least 5 or 6 good tracks to make purchasing this cd worthwhile. I'm not saying this 'cause I've become a fan of this guy.
sander kleinenberg does it again.......2003-03-31
Sander Kleinenberg gives you a quality mix...The mix begins very dark and tribal and ends a little more trancy...A must have for progressive minded people!!

Customer Reviews:
Peter Rauhofer...before he turned into "Roxy" superstar.......2004-09-08
I think that this is the best mix that Peter has put on CD. It really tops anything he's done, so far (Live at Roxy vol 1 is a REALLY close one, though). Here, he's deep and rough, and is giving us a glimpse of his now-infamous "sound". Yes, I agree, the mix can seem to be dragging on at times. But once you listen to all of these tracks singularly, you can fully appreciate them. Airmale's debut tracks are included on this mix, as well as various other hard to find gems like Vidal, Alma Matris, and Black Sun Project. Pick this up if you REALLY want to know where Peter's foundation lies.
Doesn't Hold Up Over Time.......2003-08-31
Don't get me wrong, I think Rauhofer is tops in afterhours hard house and tribal but "Essential Mix" doesn't stand the test of time....its labored, drags on and won't stay in your top cd rotation. There aren't hidden gems on this one that you'll want to come back to in a month or so....if your looking for Rauhofer at his best, check out Live @ Roxy.....because live is where the man shines !! Either volume of Roxy Live (1 or 2) is vastly superior to this one !!
Peter Rauhofer - Afterhours Circuit Party GOD!.......2003-06-19
Peter Rauhofer is once again, superb! This collection takes you on a journey into HIS world. Peter plays in clubs all over Los Angeles and San Diego. He's one of our favorites (my partner and I). Anybody into the gay L.A. afterhours, circuit scene will certainly hear familiar tracks on this set. Just putting this CD in my player makes me want to drive to the Mayan in downtown L.A. and work up a sweat dancing to Peter all night (and morning) long. It's dark and heavy on the bass.......so sweet!
tHiS cD iS HoTT!!.......2002-10-07
If you like hard tribal with just a touch of vocals and a hint of techno def scoop up this this cD. Peter's technique and track selection always makes me wanna dance, and this cd follows suit. Very energetic and flows nice throughout, full of hard basslines and smooth mixing.
If you bought this cd just for "days go by", you have no clue and were better off buying the dirty vegas cd single!
This is for the real clubbers/dancers/hard-house/tribal fans!
Great mix!.......2002-07-06
I saw Peter Rauhofer at a show in West Hollywood recently, and so had to check out his mix CDs. This is a collection that is representative of his 'live' sets, with hardhitting tribal/trance-type music, with some mainstream classics thrown into the mix. The first disc is the darker, more mellow set, while the second disc is more upbeat. Highlights include Deep Swing's "in the music", Bedrock's "Voices", Arkana's "Skin" and Dirty Vegas's "Days go by". Great circuit party music, so if you are into that sort of thing, this is the album for you.

NOT CARPENTER'S ORIGINAL SCORE...IT'S A HACK JOB..........2005-12-04
What a piece of ****. Do not buy this worthless CD. If you are a fan of John Carpenter's scores, you will not like this. Don't waste your money like I did...And the only reason it got one star is because you can't give it any less!
not for fans of carpenter's scores.......2004-12-03
like other reviewers said, this is someone else playing those classic carpenter tunes. sometimes it sounds like elevator music. unfortunately, the cover doesn't say anything about this piece of work...
Essential what?.......2003-07-08
As the previous reviewer noted, nowhere on this CD does it indicate that the 'Essential John Carpenter' is someone re-recording all of the famous cues. Naturally all the info is on the inside.
And the disc? I don't see the point in bothering. They might as well make Assault on Precinct 13, Dark Star, and They Live (which pretty much don't have scores in print anymore) available again, even if they have to combine a couple to make one disc.
Carpenter does not use orchestras or elaborate bands for his scores. He does most of it himself and that makes another Carpenter collection simple. It's not difficult to play the notes, but everything is just slightly off and after a while you wonder what's the point.
This is NOT the music from the Carpenter films you love. This is someone playing that music. Assault on Precinct 13, which provides most of the attraction of this pretty worthless disc, sounds lousy and has none of the life of the throbbing synth of the original. Not only that, but they have the nerve to throw in two (2) cues from Starman, a Carpenter film that he didn't do his own music for(!) Instead the disc is broken by the Jerry Goldsmith pieces that sound NOTHING like anything Carpenter has done. It's bad--it belongs elsewhere, namely the Starman soundtrack which is still in print.
Stay away from this thing. It's a ripoff, another attempt to cash in on a name without providing any real product.
AVOID THIS IMITATION GARBAGE!!!!! FAKE CARPENTER.......2003-06-25
These jerks did a great job hiding the fact that these tracks are re-recorded by some schlep. Avoid this lame piece of garbage at all costs. The tones are totally wrong, it sounds very little like the genius originals. I bought this to get some of the Assault on Precinct 13 stuff, and was horrified to find that everything had been re-recorded. THIS IS NOT MENTIONED ON THE OUTER PACKAGING IN ANY WAY!!! You would never know until you open it and read the liners. Shame on these bastards for trying to dupe and rip people off. AVOID THIS [STUFF]!!!
"absolute in capturing the original scores".......2002-12-03
Hats off to Gareth Williams, James Fitzpatrick and Silva Screen Records for this venture into the world of John Carpenter. Silva has done a masterful job of recreating the feel of the original Carpenter film scores. This awesome compilation of "great thriller music" sends chills up our spines from composers Ennio Morricone, Jack Nitzsche, Dave Davies, Alan Howarth and of course John Carpenter. Each selection is arranged and performed with plenty of suspense dating back to 1974, which gave the audience a supernatural and imaginative fright. Each score paints the mood for every cue, which writer, producer and director Carpenter required...and then some.
Each score takes on a life of its own away from the film. If you've never seen any of the films, your imagination plays a key role interpreting what our legendary director/composer has up his sleeve when writing and directing the music. Entire album is a stand out ~ this one's for Carpenter and Silva fans alike, a collection for the first time with tremendours power and immediacy of each cue can now be heard. With Dolby Digital Surround Sound Recordings...this is a must have for your collection. All "film-score-buffs" beware, this is guranteed to give your goosebumps on the very first track, gotta love it!

With a cheeky flair for symbolism that's entirely in character, Boy George kicked off his inaugural U.S. DJ tour on Valentine's Day, headlining at clubs around the country to promote his latest persona as showcased in his new record, Essential Mix. He's long since come back from his druggy, dark post-Culture Club days with a Peter Pan-like rebound, dropping one needle for another. It's a return to roots in a way: the dance music club scene is practically amniotic for Boy George, the milieu where he cut his teeth. So there's less of a leap than might be assumed to find the sister following in the formidable footsteps of Fatboy Slim and Paul Oakenfold (who contributed an earlier volume to London/Sire's essential mix series). And--exactly as you'd expect--Boy George indulges his decidedly idiosyncratic taste for beats with a totally unpredictable, unorthodox mad science. He's not afraid to risk jolting the crowd with some unexpected speed bumps in his flow, moving from ragga or diva house to full-on techno throb and ghosting out a voice here and there to pinch the energy's pitch. He brings on several artists from More Protein projects, including Kinky Roland (who contributes an irresistible retro-disco highlight, "Born Funky"). The Boy's mix is like moving from one club theme room into another, whether it's rave anthem ("Let Me Be Your Fantasy") or ethereal trance chilling ("Spreading the Light," with the Boy as "The Colein"). The resurrected Culture Club itself makes an appearance as "Cultural Diversion" in "See Thru" (also featuring the BG's vocals and his personal favorite, the "sexy" two-step). Boy George has said he thinks of his mix as the kind of music you might listen to while getting ready to leave for the party--but once you have it on, you're already there. --Tom May

The most underrated DJ in dance music.......2004-04-28
Boy George is one of those few dj's that really likes to try and take you on a trip of his many different tastes on every one of his mixes. He spins straight from his gut and doesn't usually play tracks as just filler or a space between tracks, everyone is an essential piece to the mix. This cd begins in an almost dublike raggae place goes through some hip hoppy break beats and rampages through house and spins you through trance. What a refreshing mix to hear after dj's like Paul Oakenfold are so up on themselves they seem to have forgetten djing is about getting other people off instead of yourself.
Worth it.......2001-07-06
I usually listen to deep house, down-tempo house, electronica and techno but after this CD I'm starting to appreciate vocal house. I didn't like it at first but after a few listens I found myself singing along to the irresistably uplifting, positive vocals. This is what I would call a girl's CD but guys, try it out. You'll be singing along with "call it fate," "let me be your fantasy," "born funky" and others.
A Sonically Scenic Ride Through Space and Time.......2001-04-24
Is it no wonder that Versace has used Boy George's talent as a DJ to spin his own musical mix for many of their most recent fashion shows in Milan. In his current iteration as DJ, Boy George takes his listeners on on a musical journey creating a lush landscape in the dance genre that transcends both the ubiqutous pounding of today's techno-pop and time itself. Opening this volume of the Essential Mix series with a newly rendered mix of "Girl From Ipanema," (a classic example of early Bosa Nova Jazz,) the Boy travels from the cocktail tinged sound of the 1960's straight into the beat driven 21st century, stopping to sample the 70's and 90's along the way. He is even found briefly revisiting the 1980's with a new cut by Culture Club, aka Cultural Diversion. It was, in fact, this updated version of the Boy's former persona of pop crooner that left me feeling somewhat forelorn--as it recalled to mind the immense talent this soulful balladeer has when it comes to phrasing a song, leaving me wanting to hear more of his lilting voice. Fortunately, it resurfaces on a later track with The Colein. Nevertheless, while it would be a joy to hear the Boy reinvent himself as a 21st century Dance Torch Diva, as BoyDJ--the trip he takes us on delivers us to new and exciting places.
must have been the stuff i was taking that made me buy this.......2001-04-18
the first time i dropped, boy george was on his american tour promoting this cd. (i saw him at his los angeles show at Giant). i dug that nite so much that i went to the record store the first day it came out and got this album at an outrageous price. i get home and start listening to it, and its not cool at all! (it must have been the stuff i was taking!) the first ten tracks are goofy and chessy sounding and its not till the later half of the album that it gets into some ok club music. a lot of people here said that they liked this album, so i guess i'm not into the same stuff; im more into the progressive trance stuff of pete tong, judge jules, and mark tabberner. some of the stuff on here is ok, so tahts why i gave it two stars. the stuff on this album is too much like 80s dance music rather than the new stuff that is coming out, even the stuff on the latter half of the album that i think is (merely)ok. i wish i had not bought this album.
My first dance CD ever... I loved it!.......2001-03-29
I am more a fan of Boy George than dance music in general but after lisening to this I will definitely expand my horizons. This is a really fun, upbeat CD and Boy George sounds great!

Album of the year... and it's only April.......2005-04-11
When I first heard that this album mixed rare groove with classic hip-hop i wasn't convinced it would gel together, but gel it does.
Katalyst takes you through the records that have influenced his music and also stood the test of time.
From the superb and timeless 'California Soul' by Marlena Shaw through to Run DMCs 'Down with the king' this double CD will have you moving in your seat and trying to work out what record that sample has been used on.
