About the Artist
Rip Rowan is a composer, performer, producer and engineer from Dallas, TX, who has been heavily involved in many aspects of music since 1986. With an extensive background in sound-for-theater, rock production, live performance, and studio engineering, Rip has taken a lateral deviation into the world of groove beats and abstractions with his solo project, Rhythm/Pleasure.
Product Description
Rhythm/Pleasure, the debut release from Rip Rowan, is a continuous-play groove-jazz adventure. Influenced by the lounge-lizard sounds of the Supreme Beings of Leisure and the grooves of DJ Mark Farina, Rhythm/Pleasure presents a crushed-velvet atmosphere riding aloft 2 a.m. martini beats. The sound continuously transforms itself from jazz, to electronica, to trip-hop, and finally ends in an orchestral world-beat symphony. Hard to define, immediately recognizable, Rhythm/Pleasure is cooler than "lite jazz", more seductive than electronica, and too imaginitive to pass by unnoticed.

From Menopause to being 40 again........2006-11-03
This is my 2nd CD, I wore the first one, and my last boyfriend out! lol
Put Phil Perry on, and I would loose my mind. This is one of the most amazing voices of our time. Sweet, soft, profound, in mood for anything
music, whether it be a nice dinner, or a cozing evening for two. This is the man you want to be listening too. Sorry Luther you were great, but Phil he just is!
Missing song eleven.......1999-12-14
Phil Perry has one of the most "spiritual" voices I've heard. The lyrics are so wonderful, true and touching. He has to be one of the top artist of our time. Disappointing with this album is that song eleven "This side of heaven" was not on this CD. A very good friend of mine had gotten the CD from the United Arabic Emriates (UAE) while stationed there. His CD contained 11 songs. When I heard the album I had to own it but was disappointed when the eleventh song was not included. Nonetheless, this is a "GREAT" album and will have you dancing and uplifted. When is the "Old Time Gospel" album coming out? I'll be the first to purchase. His voice is spiritually given. Phil, I thank God for your "ministry of music" He has given you. God Bless! Pastor Hall
I love this album........1999-11-07
Love it! This album sounds so good. I like all of the songs on this album. My favorite songs are one touch and when it comes to love . Phil perry sounds so good. If you enjoy ballads you will like this album.

Album Description
When the Ohio Players recorded their second Westbound album, Pleasure, in 1972, they weren't as big as they would be from 1974-1976. But their popularity was growing -- slowly but surely -- and those who were hip to the band recognized it as one of the most cutting-edge acts in the funk field. A lot of bands were providing funk in 1972, but not many of them used jazz progressions as creatively as the Players used them on "Laid It," "Walked Away from You," and Pleasure's title song. Those tracks are gems, and the Players are equally captivating on the sweet soul ballad "Varee Is Love." But the best known tune on the album is the goofy "Funky Worm," which employed the Players' amusing Granny character and was, in 1972, their biggest hit to date. Long after the band's popularity faded, "Funky Worm" would live on in the '80s and '90s thanks to the various hip-hoppers who sampled its irresistible bassline. Like Pain in 1971, Pleasure had a kinky cover that generated some controversy -- the same bald woman who brandished a bullwhip and wore dominatrix attire on the front cover of Pain was chained up on the cover of Pleasure. Some folks found the Players' kinky LP covers intriguing, while others were shocked and offended. And the Players, having struggled in the '60s, were happy to be noticed. But ultimately, it is the quality of the music -- not the bondage-minded cover -- that makes Pleasure a funk classic. - Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
This 2007 reissue includes seven bonus tracks, in-depth sleeve notes, and a full-color 12-page booklet.

Riding an '80s backbeat and their own velvet harmonies, 112R&B's answer to the pure-pop boy bandsails into Pleasure & Pain with "Let This Go," a hard-edged charmer that works equally well as pound-the-steering-wheel morning commute music or a sophisticated club jam. The rest of the disc follows suit, detouring here and there for ladies-only love songs ("Nowhere," "That's How Close We Are"), a soul interlude ("We Goin' Be Alright"), and sexy toe-dips into hip-hop ("If I Hit" featuring T.I. and "Closing the Club" featuring Three 6 Mafia). More than anything, this fifth album is a measure of the band's musical mettle: Instead of trading entirely on the 1996 sound that earned them a ride up the charts with "Only You," Q, Mike, Slim, and Daron work it out in a way that says they're as done with the last century as the rest of us. Best of all, that baby-don't-break-my-heart wail that could pay the boys' bills by itself works its way into nearly every track.--Tammy La Gorce

Hmm.......2006-10-08
To the fool under me, God Knows is a ten out of ten. It is the best song on the cd which is ok. I wouldn't buy it but there are some really good songs like last to know, my mistakes, nowhere, etc. The production is somewhat faulty; but don't forget, best song = God Knows.
It's not as good as their first album but its a keeper........2006-04-28
112 has done it again after a rahter disapointing effort with hot & wet. this is a great album, the track production quality is really good, i had a few issues with some of the tracks but i was amazed at some of the rest. definately a keeper, im looking forward to their next album.

More Pleasure than Pain.......2006-04-23
112 more than made up for their last album "Hot & Wet", which completely choked. Even though they didn't have more TIGHT interludes (like their first three albums), this CD got heavy rotation in my house, car, job, etc. "U Already Know" is a favorite by many, including myself, but I'm disappointed that some of the other singles weren't released. "What If" got some play for a bit, then disappeared. My other favorites are:
2. Let This Go
9. My Mistakes
10. If I Hit
11. The Way
14. That's How Close We Are
15. Closing the Club
I'm praying that 112 does not stop with this album because they are very gifted and I still can't get enough of them, even when they're at their worst.
112 is still the bomb!!.......2006-01-12
I just bought this album despite all the bad reviews I've read about it. The CD isn't bad but it's not that great either. To me, their first album will always be the best. There are a few tracks on this CD that I could do without listening to like "Closing The Club" and "If I Hit", I guess because I'm just not feeling the lyrics on these two. I think the best songs on the album are "That's How Close We Are" and "God Knows". Overall, I think the album was ok. I'm still and always will be a big fan though.
Pleasure & Pain--they're half-right.......2006-01-12
All four members have ample singing time this time around but the material is still mediocre. "U Already Know" was a hit but their follow-up(s) weren't. They've been in the business for ten years now and they can sing but they got the wrong team working with them. Leave Def Soul and get some better writers/producers.

My favorite of the 5.......2003-05-06
This was the 1st "Omar" CD I owned. Bought it as an import in 1994 and with in months, Omar became my favorite soul/r&b artist. Omar mixes different vocal ranges into an unique blend of soulful grooves. This CD contains many of his soulful classics that bless underground radio today, 9 years later: I'm Still Standing/ Little Boy/ Need You Bad/ Making Sence Of It...
If you're like many who are just now introducing yourself to Omar because of his vocals on Common's "Eletric Circus", this is the perfect CD to start out with.

Customer Reviews:
this is music to get down to!.......2005-12-14
With a perfect mix of jazz and lounge, this cd is the perfect mix to seduce someone to, or even just to relax to! I picked this up as an impulse buy, and it's been in heavy rotation ever since! It's mainly instrumental, and upbeat enough to tap your foot to, but chill enough to just sit back and relax too. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more releases from him, as this cd is the best jazz/chill out i've bought in a long time.
Oh, yeah........2004-12-17
I've never heard of Rip Rowan before, but I'm definitely keeping an eye out for future releases. Listening to this CD is like finding that rare gem that makes you smile all over. I have no favorite track on this CD--the whole thing is good from start to finish.
The Perfect Balance of Jazz and Electronica.......2004-09-01
Just got this CD and it is both smooth and groovin'.
The mix of electronica and smooth jazz is just right - just when it seems like it's getting a little too electronic, it slips into jazz... just when it's getting too jazzy, it slips into ambient and back to electronica.
There isn't a bad track on the record. If you just want to chill out this CD does the trick. Great for long car rides. Also the last track is a killer, it belongs on a soundtrack. Unreservedly recommended, a must-buy.
Excellent modern midtempo.......2004-06-27
This is a GREAT disc. I bought this disc because I know Rip from his recording website ProRec, so I thought I would check out his work. BOY was I surprised. This CD is one part funky, one part groovy, one part jazzy, and one part sexy. It is the first choice for those laid-back-bottle-of-wine (and what-have-you) parties with a bunch of friends and some great conversation. The sample tracks don't do it justice because it is a single hour-long piece of music that needs to be heard all of the way through to be appreciated. My favorite part of the disc are tracks 7-10 taken together.
Great Instrumentals.......2004-06-18
I really dug this CD. I was turned on by the Mark Farina references, though I don't think this sounds much like Farina (it sounds more composed than mixed) it's still a good pointer. If you like Mushroom Jazz you'll like this one. The last track "Eastern Rhythm/Western Pleasure" is probably the best of the bunch, but the whole thing was good. I also liked that the musical style seemed to change up alot - some jazz, some disco/funk, some world-classical. Quite cool.

This is great.......2004-06-04
I just got this CD the other day and I am buying a couple for gifts.
I haven't stopped listening to it since I got it. The arrangements stay true to the original arrangements and the music is fresh and exciting to listen to.
I think this CD is great and will make great gifts for my friends who like Janet Jackson.
An insult to Janet-loving audiophiles........2004-06-02
Given the lofty title of this recording and the other reviews of it on Amazon.com, I had rather high hopes for this purchase. Now I'm just hoping there's a used CD store in town that will take this sophomoric rubbish.
As the credits on this CD indicate (warn?), this so-called "string quartet" is actually just TWO people: one playing a real violin and the other playing a SAMPLER with some string sounds, drums, and a few miscellaneous synthesizers in a half-assed attempt to make these songs sound vaguely like the real McCoys. Anyone who knows so little about chamber music as to mistake the strings and drums (other than the lead violin) for real instruments and not the sequenced electronic imitations that they are is probably not an appropriate audience for a seemingly high-brow musical concept that one would expect a "string quartet" to be in the first place. In other words, whether you have trouble comprehending the intellectual complexity of a Britney Spears song or you have an advanced degree in musicology, I can't imagine that you'd want to waste your time and money on such a CD.
And if you're thinking about buying it for a good laugh, unfortunately, while this trash is cheesy, it's not bad enough to stretch into campy. Think of it as William Hung after a year of voice lessons. Still awful, but no longer laughable.
Think of it as a tribute to Janet Jackson when you decide to pass on buying such a poorly conceived knock-off. Or let me know if you'd want to buy it from me for a big discount! Just remember that I won't accept a return...no matter how badly you want to give this "earlobe malfunction" back. You can't say I didn't warn you. CJF
Open The Flood Gates!.......2004-04-28
I am gushing!!!
This is the most fabulous CD that you can get! First off it's Damita Jo songs which everyone just loves.... But then they are performed with violins and orchestras... It's Grace meets Will with a passion for life!!!
If you have a special event or a romantic rendevous with someone this music will tantilize your senses and make everyone know that you have A1 class!!!
So Awesome! So Janet!.......2004-04-01
OMG!!!
The first String Quartet Tribute I got was Nickelback and I sooooo loved it!!!
I just got this CD today and it is unbelievable!!! Janet MUST have had something to do with making of it because it is SOOOOOO Janet!
My favs are Control, Love Will Never Do Without You, Rhythm Nation, Escapade, Everytime and Pleasure Principle.
The production is amazing! It has drums and bass with a string quartet and it grooves like the original renditions of all the songs.
Rhythm Nation reminded me of the superbowl performance cause it has marching drums in it just like her performance did......KickIt!!!
I'm buying two copies right now for my two best friends who are huge JJ fans like me... I know they'll love it too!!!

Glide is on here way too many times. Best hits is a better choice. The song "Living Without You ", is on The "Special Things", album. It has a solid red album jacket with "Pleasure" written in cursive across the front of it. I do not believe it is available on cd. Pleasure is surely one of the best bands of it's era.

Wow, someone FINALLY had the wisdom to reissue "Accept No Substitutes" on CD! This is unquestionably the BEST Pleasure album of all. (Although the Joyus album is a very close second) From the first note of the classic (and much sampled) Let's Dance this album is the BomB. I've been looking for and waiting for this one on CD for years. The list of great songs on this album just goes on and on "We have so much, I'm mad, Pleasure for your pleasure, Ghettos of the mind, Love of my life". This is some real good funky yet smooth music, end of story. If you are at all a fan of 70s era music....Go get this one!
