Imagine an artist who sounds like a cross between the legendary jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius and an ancient African griot, and you'll get the exciting Richard Bona. Like the best world music artists, Bona combines native idioms with Western influences to create a personal and complex musical statement. On this recording, the Cameroon-born electric bassist, acoustic guitarist, and percussionist drapes his silky Douala-language vocals on 12 well-produced tracks. Guests include the Orchestra of St. Luke's, guitar legend Pat Metheny, and saxophonist Michael Brecker.
The tunes range from the sophisticated Pan-African syncopations of "Bisso Baba" and the Cuban-style cha-cha-cha beat on "Ekwa Mwato" to the Americana-tinged melody of the title track. Bona's falsetto voice and the impressionistic strings on "Laka Mba" make for a nice contrast, and the bassist brilliantly shows off his jazz skills on the fast and furious Weather Report-like fusion workout "Mbanga Kumba." If there's an all-world team of musicians, Richard Bona will definitely be on the first string. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Bona's masterpiece........2005-09-02
Richard Bona's debut album, "Scenes From My Life", was a coming out for the singer/bassist/multi-instrumentalist-- a chance to flex his songwriting muscles and really explore the musics he loves. But it suffered from a number of problems to my mind, mostly in the production vein-- the mix was a bit muddy and provided a sameness to all the pieces and Bona's bass playing, so unnervingly superlative as to draw favorable comparisons to Jaco Pastorius, was recessed way in the background. The followup to his debut, "Reverence", fixes that problem-- the sound is superb, less muddy, and Bona's bass is emphasized similar to the bass emphasis on Pastorius' classic records, which serves the music well. But more importantly, the songs on here are by and large superior to the already superb songs on "Scenes From My Life". In short, this album is thus far Richard Bona's masterpiece.
Bona, a native of Camaroon, fuses his love of jazz and really all musics together to form something that is a bit indescribable. Most pieces feature vocals, with Bona singing largely in his native Duoula. This has led over-simplified descriptions of his music as African Jaco, and so on, but while the influence of Pastorius is clear, this is really much more. Bona seemlessly integrates his love of Pastorius and fusion with numerous other influences, and yeah, the native musics of his home no doubt played a part in it, but there's so much more.
Opening with a largely a capella piece ("Invocation"), the album quickly moves into a funky jazz vein in "Bisso Baba" with absolutely amazing bass playing, a nice chorus, and at the end of the bridge-- an unbelievably graceful bass explosion and Leon Thomas-like yodel. If you're not convinced of Bona's prowess by this point, this isn't going to be for you.
The rest of the record manages to follow suit in brilliance throughout, from a superb jazz ballad ("Suninga", arranged for brushes on drums, bass, acoustic guitar and strings) to acoustic folky pop ("Sweet Mary", "Lake Mba") to boiled out funk ("Ngad'a Ndutu") and a sweet piano-and-vocal ballad ("Esoka"). Along the way, we get treated to brilliant arrangements ("Ekwa Mwato" moves from pretty acoustic pop to explosive funky swing and back again as the arrangement builds in sublety, closer "Mbanga Kumba" starts with an orchestra and bass and moves into a monster bass assault with Bona's playing fast and furious and supported only by drums) and a total masterpiece of sensitivity and power in music ("Reverence"-- arranged for strings and two bass lines-- one on a regular bass, one on a piccolo bass, with lovely solos from guest Pat Metheny on acoustic guitar and Bona on bass) that is at the same time lush and understated, and totally beautiful.
Invariably, I think my nearly mindless praise has proved that I think this record is a masterpiece-- anyone questioning whether Bona is really heir apparent to Jaco's crown should look here. Highly recommended.
A genre all his own.......2003-04-23
This is not a CD which can be adequately categorized. Richard Bona encompasses jazz, new age, and world music, without truly being "OF" any of those genres.
However, it's safe to say that if you are a true fan of any of the three genres, you will find yourself completely taken in and absorbed by this music. There's nothing flashy here, nor on the other hand is there any bland mellowness.
I admit that the vocals rather put me off the first time I listened, but only because this wasn't quite what I expected. By the second listen, I was better prepared and more appreciative.
I honestly urge all to listen to this. You'll be glad you did.
Listen! Really listen!.......2002-12-07
I got Richard Bona's Reverence from a mail CD club. It arrived with 4 other CD's, mostly Jazz. As I gave each a brief run-through, Bona's was the least I liked, I thought the emphasis on his voice was a bit much, and I expected a mostly instrumental album with brilliant bass playing. But after a couple of listens, it began to sink in, and I truly fell in love with this music! It is simply a wonderful amalgam of African rythms with just enough of a Jazz/Latin vibe to it, and I was simply swept off my feet. Amazingly, of the whole bunch of CD's this became my favorite!! Whenever I want to calm down, this album really helps me - Bona's soothing voice and magical rythms can only uplift your soul and bring you to a state of peace. He's got some lush ballads, some mid-tempo world-beat songs, and some flat-out funk fusion rythmically and harmonically, but using unique African melodies on top in his trademark vocal style. Not just a bassist, but a great musician creating unique musical art. A revelation!!
Bona does it again!.......2002-03-08
Richard Bona blesses us with his sophmore CD Reverence. It's just as original as the first one. It's smooth, soothing, relaxing, and filled with passion. I highly recommend this CD. If you buy this CD, do your self a favor and also purchase his first CD Scenes from my life. I love this guy. Though I don't understand his language, his insruments and voice crosses the language barrier. Hope you take what I'm saying literrally. It's that good!
Confirming or infirming?.......2001-09-27
I HAVE NOT RATED THIS CD YET,FOR I HAVEN'T LISTENED TO IT .YOU SHOULD BE ASKING YOURSELVES WHY I 'M WRINTING THESE LINES : WELL, BE ASSURED THAT THIS IS NOT BECAUSE I"M BORED.
I HAVE REPEATEDLY LISTENED TO BONA'S ODISSEY FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS AND THIS EMAIL SHOULD AT LEAST CONFIRM WHAT WE ALL SHOULD KNOW BY NOW: BONA IS A MAESTRO OF THE BEST BREED AND WE CAN, BEFOREHAND EXPECT TO HAVE AT LEAST SOME LANGOROUS BASS LINES, WITH THE EASY SOPHISTICATION THAT THIS GUY HAS BEEN BLESSED WITH!
IN BONA 'S COUNTRY , PLAYING THE BASS GUITAR IS NOT MUCH CONSIDERED THE BEST WAY TO GET INTO THE HALL OF FAME.BUT BY PLAYING ALL THESE INSTRUMENTS , BONA HAS DEMONSTRATED A VERY UNUSUAL MASTERY IN THE ART OF COMPOSING SONGS.I WILL NOT MENTION THAT VOICE CROWNING EVERY BALAD AND EVERY SONATE MAJESTICALLY.
YOU ALL SHOULD DO LIKE ME ON THIS ALBUM, RATE IT FIRST AND BUY IT NEXT ! BUT MAKE SURE YOU BAY IT THEN ,YOU CAN ONLY COME BACK TO ADD SOME MORE STARS ON YOUR RATING! OK LET ME GO LISTEN TO THE ALBUM NOW !
I got Bona's CD an listened and succumbed and came back to say to whom it might concern:This is da hit ! So far this year , I have been impressed by two composers.Paul Simon's "you are the one" can now leave the place to Bona's "reverence" which is ENTCHANTING!!
Although very Jazz flavoured compared to the previous "scenes from my life", Bona brings his stuff to the altar of excellence.
The very first vocal balad is a well accomplished singing exercise , beautified bye the melancholy that often seizes folks that live off the valleys of mount Kamerun.
Then, very unexpectedly,Bona makes a true reverence to Nele Eyoum and EBOA LOTTIN, and reassusses those who were asking themselves about what we would do with Makossa today,at the dawn of the 21 st century : the title is "SWeet Mary" !! This is Big!!
Well for the rest , You guys can always jot down what you find!
Let me go listen again!
VAL.

The best or second-best Faithless album..........2005-12-30
It is very difficult to top the white-hot, cumulative intensity of 2005's "No Roots" but for stand-alone tunes (which still have their own kind of unity...) "Reverence" is also outstanding. The remix disk "Irreverence" - which is included in some versions of this album - delivers consistently superb alternatve versions of these songs, notable even for a group that has one of the finest catalogues of remixes in Musicdom.
Don't debate: buy "Reverence" and "No Roots". You will be sickened to hear that this protean, unpredictable, unclassifiable artist/producer trio has announced "No Roots" to be their last album while ho-hum nonentity derivative acts roll on forever.
This music is too good for most people, are you kool enough?.......2005-06-24
This album is not for everyone. I mean it's not for musical heathens and anyone that says it's terrible is an imbecile! It requires a highly sophisticated understanding of what excellent music and art really are. This album is one of the greatest of our time. Each time you listen it seems new. It evolves and if you're lucky enough to be someone that evolves themselves, this music is for life. "Insomnia" is the epitome of life it's a song that makes you feel alive. It has the power to evoke a multitude of emotions, it makes you think of life itself, It makes you think of changing your life. If I were stranded on a desert island this would be in my top five for all time.
Faithless are absolute brilliance.
Essential.......2005-04-08
I first came across Faithless in early 1997. I was drawn to the bass line of Insomnia. I was delighted to find a CD full of gems. Faithless dares not to be stuck in a single genre of music. The easily transition from a bluesy song like Don't Leave to a house driven song like Salve Mea and the trancy Drifting Away. Faithless has seperated themselves from most of their contemporaries because much of their music is more orchestra than single. Anyone who was caught up in the mid 90s trip hop, house revolution must add this to their collection. Faithless is one of the few artists in the last 10yrs along with Massive Attack who I find is always in or near my CD player.
Far from Insomnia.......2004-06-07
Faithless first came out in 1996 and released what was going to become a classic, "Insomnia" which is a very unique dance track. Faithless is not only about dance however, their music influents changes from song to song, so don't be surprised if you hear something completely diffrent then the the hit single "Insomnia" here. There are also a few diffrent singers on the album. Jamie Catto that is somehow the frontfigure on the outside, Dido with others.
Faithless is Rollo and Sister Bliss, Maxi Jazz and Jamie Catto however, the first 2 started of as house producers and were behind some good songs in the early 90's, Faithless is far from a house band even if they are heavy infleunted by dance music.
"Insomnia" Is a very strange song, it starts with drums and a haunting melody typical for "house" music. Catto starts some slow philophical rapping about life, then after 2 minutes the "hook" arrives which is the "dance melody". "Salva Mea" is simular and one of the best songs on this album, watch out this is a long song aswell. it has some very good dance rthythm, however it's sang by a female aswell. The lead title "Reverence" reminds me abit of Arrested Development. Catto is rapping with some catchy backround beats. "Don't Leave" is sung by a man, with backround choirs. "Angeline" is simular to it, it also includes flutes that sound China influented. For those of you that liked Dido, yeah she appeared on "Flowerstand Man" a typical Dido song. I like "Drifting Away" alot it's slow almost ambient, and very beautiful dance song.
For those of you that likes dance music and like artisticm albums that are diffrent from your average dance album, take a look at this almost flawless dance masterpiece. Faithless has it all. They later followed up with the great "Sunday 8pm" and "Outrospective" which i didn't like. This album "Reverence" is highly recommended, it suits amny diffrent kinds of music taste.
One of the albums that is so unique..........2002-12-21
This album was yet another one I discovered abruptly in 2001 and I tend to listen to it still tons and tons even today. I had heard of Faithless on the Cruel Intentions soundtrack with the song "Addictive", a track I thought was very good. I was presently surprised when I got Reverence to find an excellent album that is my favorite Faithless album still. The album opens off with "Reverence" and the light rapping but it mixes so well with the beat of the music. "Don't Leave" follows in a beautiful fashion and leads up to probably one of the best songs by Faithless, "Salva Mea"....this track begins off with violins and light vocals but tends to take on a trance/dance sound to it but after about 4 mins, the rhythm changes to more bass and light rapping again...a truly amazing and unique track. "If Lovin You Is Wrong" and "Angeline" are great tracks on the album as well but almost seem lost between "Salva Mea" and "Insomnia", another well known and amazing track on the album. "Dirty Ol' Man", "Flowerstand Man", and "Baseball Cap" are good tracks on the album as well but again seem overshadowed next by "Drifting Away", another favorite track of mine off this album. Overall, this is an amazingly unique album that just doesn't fade at all...if anything, it's like a fine wine that grows better with time.

Customer Reviews:
A Solid CD.......2004-09-22
I first heard this CD from a family member. The music is very soothing and simply puts you in a introspective and calm mood. Jeff Ball creates great music and I think this CD is put together quite well. There is a rhythm to it that echoes beyond the listener's ears. It's the kind of music you can put in your car on a long drive and allow yourself to forget about all the junk for a while. All of the tracks are great but if I had to pick favorites they would be "Southern Sun", "Take it as it Comes," and "Out Of The Darkness".
Jeff Ball Rules.......2004-03-30
Jeff Ball's "Reverence" and his music in general is so relaxing. I think that it is very original among other flute music and it's interesting to hear the different sounds used throughout the CD. It's very creative. It's also very soothing, and so forth. You can definitely hear the Native American influences, throughout that, and I dig that. Try a listen of this CD. It's worth it.
Very Spiritual.......2003-04-05
We bought the tape while driving around the Southwest and it captured the ancient Native American spiritual feel of the land so well we wore it out. I'm now buying the CD. I love that he describes his song journey in the notes. Highly recommend his work.
A Wonderful Way to Relax.......2002-12-01
This Cd is great. The music is so relaxing and really is spiritual and uplifting. It helps after a long and stressful day at work. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves Native American music.
Mystical and alive.......2000-05-28
Creative! Mystical! The flute leads the way in this music as Kokopelli used his flute in the ancient myths. The music imparts a deep, sensual, mystical flavor of the southwest. It heals the spirit and soothes the soul.

My favorite Libana CD..........2002-07-09
I've been into Libana for over 10 years, and this is by far my favorite, even surpassing "A Circle is Cast." The songs are easy to chant/sing along to and are life/earth affirming, rhythmic and soothing. I particularly am fond of Treeplanter's Round, Con el Viento, Lullaby, Ode to Contentment, Now I Walk in Beauty, and most especially, Be Like a Bird. Even my husband has begun to appreciate Libana through this CD, which is a real breakthrough.
A Little Better Than A Circle Is Cast.......2002-06-05
Just like their other album, it includes songs about the Judeo-Christian Deity. If I wanted that I'd buy one of the countless albums about Jesus! And like A Circle Is Cast the songs are too short and somewhat hard to understand.
To be honest, Libana kind of reminds me of Enya who I'm also not crazy about.
Uplifting, singable music.......2002-03-12
I bought the cassette maybe ten years ago and fell in love. There is a guided meditation, some great circle chants and even a girl scout campfire song! Feminine without being offensively feminist, and somehow delivering the feeling of being very personal. I wish I understood the Spanish: Con El Viento is lovely. Music translates well into other philosophies (some come from other philosophies). Buy it, you'll like it!
Fire Within.......2001-11-24
Some of the songs are great for meditatng
Looking For a while to find this again!.......2000-05-02
I Came to this site just to find this. The Chants in this CD are addictive. I was given this as a gift years ago. My daughter needs music to get up in the morning and has mood disorders: I am getting this CD after knowing its postive effects on my son ten years ago. We also played it alot in the car, it seems to keep the chilren calm and they learn its lyrics which are life/soul focused. This is alot healthier stuff than turning on your local radio station for a child.

The Twelve Gifts of Birth - Music.......2006-03-01
I have given numerous copies of the book as a gift to all my friends who are first-time grandmothers to give to their new grandchid and was unaware of the music that now can accompany the book. I love it! Such wonderful positive messages and great sing along - not only for children, but for adults too. I bought one CD for my grandchildren and then ordered five more for gifts for adults and children. If everyone grew up listening to these messages how wonderful it would be!
Great Music for Adults, Too!!!.......2004-11-25
This CD is wonderful. There is such a great mixture of styles and everyone can enjoy it! I actually cried because it was so beautiful...and I'm not a mushy kind of gal!! It's a must-have no matter if you have/work with children or not.
Music for everyone!.......2004-10-30
This CD, although especially good for children, is music for everyone to enjoy. The themes in the music remind us to be positive and kind people in a busy, hectic world. This CD deserves more attention!!!
A Breath of Fresh Air.......2004-09-29
This CD will entertain and stimulate you and your child for years to come. The melodies are captivating, and the rhythms are so enticing they will get your feet tapping and your hands clapping. The Twelve Gifts of Birth is a wonderful CD for all ages!
Beautiful Music.......2004-09-14
As a music educator, I highly recommend this CD and the book that it is based on. The music is powerful and inspirational, and it is easy for youth and adults to sing along together. It would be wonderful to have more quality music CD's such as this one...to replace the tired Raffi and other pop culture children's music icons.
