Paul Oakenfold
³Hernan's got the skill and talent. His progressive house and twisted tribal beats are up to par with the world's biggest DJs.²
Product Description
Hernan Cattaneo has always been one of South America¹s biggest DJs, but his opportunity to truly break out globally came when Clubland¹, the weekly Saturday at Pacha, Buenos Aries, became recognized as one of, if not THE world¹s best club. Hernan suddenly found himself playing alongside the likes of Sasha, Tenaglia, Deep Dish and Paul Oakenfold. Although all highlighted him as one to watch¹, it was Oakie who snapped Hernan up, taking him on world tours as his official warm-up and signing him to his Perfecto label for the lauded mix comp, Perfecto Presents: South America (Thrive, 2002). From this things blossomed, with further career highs including opening DJ sets on Underwold¹s 2003 US run, a slot at the 2003 Coachella festival, & remixes for Deep Dish¹s Shinichi label. Most recent highlights include a remix of Morgan Page for John Digweed¹s Bedrock label (as can be heard on this album) and, of course, his confirmation as the next DJ to mix a Renaissance Masters album, where Hernan joins such esteemed company as Deep Dish and Dave Seaman in this massively successful mix CD series.
With Masters, Hernan expands upon his trademark deep n sexy tribal sound. The tracklisting reads like a trainspotter¹s wet dream and includes some of the most upfront progressive house tracks from the likes of Josh Wink, Danny Howells, Luke Chable, Jay Tripwire, and the debut CD appearance of the current global dancefloor hit, ³Age of Love.²

Dreamy Progressive with a hint of Funky.......2006-03-06
Hernan does a great job at bringing the best elements from the lost art of progressive and blending it with contemporary, tribal, atmospheric finesse. Each CD brings its own mood to the table and executes it with precision. The first CD is a little funkier and chill with the second CD a relentless deep progressive experience. All the while it gives some consistency with hints and accents of dreamy atmospherics that truly distinguish Cattaneo as a Renaissance Master. The first CD favs are 2, 5, and the progressive tribal luciousness of track 6. Track 3 on disc 2 is an emotive wonder as well as midway through 5. An excellent purchase that I am 100% involved with now.
AMAZING!!!.......2006-02-16
This is what I believe to be Hernan at his best. Some of the best progressive I have ever heard. He is one of the best in the world and he proves it here. Both CDs are amazing. There are very few CDs that I can listen to in there entirety. Both of these CDs are included in that select group.
Renaissance: The Master Series, Vol. 2 mixed by Hernán Cattáneo.......2006-01-29
If you like deep progressive sound, this one is essential pick.
This album is a clear evidence why Mr.Cattaneo is so regarded in
house scene. Mixing is flawless and beatiful, whit quality tracks.
The return of progressive house.......2005-11-23
If you're like me, bored with progressive house DJs trying to break new grounds with material that is maybe 20% danceable, relieve yourself - get this CD. Both mixing and track selection are on par with Dave Seaman's very best releases, and the style is similar. At last, here's again THAT intelligent, rich, mind-blowing, stomach-twirling house that keeps dancefloor crazy for the whole night and haunts you for weeks. Would love the guy come to Moscow more that any other DJ in the World.

Above Average But Nothing To Get Excited About.......2007-06-06
This is the first commercial production that I listen to by Cattaneo. I must admit that I have been impressed by the majority of his live sets that I've listened to. Probably why I expected a little more from this one.
Predominantly falling under the progressive house genre, there are a number of very good tracks over the two discs, but just as many mediocre ones. Compress this into a single disc and it would have more of an impression.
Both discs get 3.5/5 stars.
Better than Vol2.......2005-09-02
There's some wickedly cool stuff here, but I feel that all of it could have just fitted onto one cd. Not a bad buy.
Wickedly cool .......2005-02-09
OK, Track 13 on Disc 1 is a remix of Tool's "aenema" (http://www.lyricsfreak.com/t/tool/139381.html) damn that is SO cool, all done with a chick singer.
Cattaneo's work is slick and fascinating. Very dark and moody at times, other times more introspective and passive, then he'll just unleash some wickedly cool swirl of sound that will definitely leave you wanting more. Highly recommended
way too good.......2005-01-10
Hernan shows the world how trendy and elegant can be the eletronic music .
It's good...sure.......2004-12-23
This is a solid showing and definatly keeps the bar raised on the Renaissance series. Money well spent.

Customer Reviews:
I tried... Lord, how I tried..........2007-04-15
...to fancy this album as much as any other Master's Series production. But it just isn't happening, and I have this distinct feeling I will never truly "feel" this mix. In the good name of EDM, I will further explain myself.
Though this is my first (and probably last) experience with him, I had high expectations for Sandy Rivera's eighth Master's series release - so much so that I had it imported from England for over thirty dollars. One thing I can immediately offer praise for regarding this album - the packaging is *spectacular*. I recall uttering something along the lines of "...Renaissance completely outdid themselves here," as I freed the case from its plastic bondage. Graphically, INSECT made yet another immaculate work of art.
But on to the real meat - the music.
Rivera's discs, simply put, are just too pop for me to take seriously! He possesses tasteful House beats - definitive, certainly worthy of the Renaissance label and definitely worth giving a listen to. So WHY, why, why then are there so many lyrics that are all so distasteful? Reciting the faded disco-glamour of women in high heels and satin and pompously flaunting the "hip" disco-club scene, the words make the music feel like a joke. And this comes from someone who enjoyed Sharam's vocal-laced Global Underground "Dubai". On top of such finely crafted rhythms, which I think Rivera does quite well as far as mixing is concerned, such ludicrous lyrics make the album a tasteless endeavor overall. Splitting my concentration to focus solely on the beats and instrumentation was difficult to do, too, since the voices are so mockingly piercing. At one point (I believe it was either "Crimes" or "Bonafide") I actually thought that I was hearing vocal samples from a Backstreet Boys song.
So why cant I simply judge this album based on the tracks which are not infected by these vocal viruses?
Because there are none!
Believe it or not, at this precise moment I cannot recall a single track of the twenty-six he provides us with that doesnt incorporate some sort of lyrical mutiny (save Tigerskin's "Neontrance" and Buick Project's "Luminaire"). Now that I've mentioned the two vocal-less tracks, however, I feel I should laud Rivera for inserting these gems into his mix, but wait! There are more caveats, yet. "Neontrance" made a fantastic appearance on John Digweed's "Transitions," but Rivera's seems stripped down and anticlimactic by comparison. "Luminaire," on the other hand, is one of my favorite electro tracks of all time. While the best versions that I have heard are on Buick Project's "Productions and Remixes" and Dave Seaman's "Master's Series Pt. 7," I cannot complain about Rivera's. So, disregarding the inclusion of a track already released on the "Master's" CD preceding this one, I do think that "Luminaire" works. As soon as those hauntingly beautiful melodies subside, it's back to disco-weirdness.
Sandy Rivera does extreme instrumental justice to this Renaissance album. Utilizing very uplifting musical movement in a sensible sequence, this is quite simply a well-mixed, fantastically paced disco-house album marred by more-than-awful vocals.
I suppose I could still hang the packaging up on my wall...
...Better luck next time, Sandy.
