This is an electro-pop masterpiece, owing as much to the contemporary electronic productions of Berlin and Detroit as to the pop of Prince or Cabaret Voltaire. Chris Corner's voice is the unifying thread, at times similar to the howlings of Cabaret Voltaire, always with the emotional clarity of Curtis Mayfield.

This collection of pieces is a real treat for RVW fans. The recordings of Flos campi (surely one of RVW's most unusual and mystical works, somehow managing to capture the elusive emotional/spiritual environment of the Song of Solomon) and the Suite for Viola and Orchestra (rarely recorded, but a delectable mixing of folk-song, Bach, Bartok-like passages, and rich, resonant melodies redolent of autumn) would be enough in themselves. Couple them with the Six Studies in English Folksong for clarinet & piano (a rare piece of Vaughn Williams chamber music) and the ravishing instrumental version of Serenade to Music, and you have a truly admirable set. This is an assemblage of a number of earlier recordings: in this case, I think, the cream has been skimmed and put into one convenient two-disc collection. The recorded sound is good throughout, and the notes well-written and interesting - an excellent Chandos release.

I am a rock musician but I must say that there is little other music on this green earth that is as gorgeous as that of Vaughan Williams. Some folk and country airs can touch the melancholy that VW can, some of Bach's or Ravel's pieces maybe. But when I hear music like Flos Campi 2nd and 6th movements, or the beautiful short pieces that comprise Six Studies in English Folk Song ... well, they leave me breathless. Parts of Flos Campi sounds like VW has distilled all the tinsel and magic, childlike wonder and true peace of something as hard to define as Christmas and made it into music. Serenade to Music in it's pure orchestral form still remains a glorius composition, even without the vocalists. My, when it hits that early theme in the latter part with full force and orchestra ... And the lovely Linden Lea and that wonderful Suite ... Almost too much. I sometimes program this and some of his major works, such as Tallis, Dives and Lazarus and The Lark Ascending (when I have some time to spare!): it's a big 'wow' factor. VW's music is unashamedly beautiful, capturing the sweetest folk elements and conjuring up the spirit of the wildest and most remote parts of Britain (in my head at least). This music is something else and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Well, forget everything you heard about Corner simply wanting to be like Radiohead. This album pretty much takes the early industrial (I'm not talking about NIN), lite trip hop, and 80's flavorings that cropped up in Bloodsport and takes it to the extreme. His voice might seem a little much after a while, but I made it through the first 1 1/2 listens before it got a bit annoying in a single sitting. At least he knows how to use his voice qualities and limitations properly, unlike a lot of people who don't capitalize on their strengths and stay away from their weaknesses as they should. It might seem like gimmickry, but that's kind of the whole point of using your voice as a hook. The weird gay heroine addict theme of the photography might throw some people off, but the guy's just skinny, likes funky fo-hawks (read that: really big bed hair), and the color pink. Can't blame a guy for that.

If you like Sneaker Pimps (especially Splinter and Bloodsport) you'll love this disc. Dark, and moody in a good way. Probably Chris Corner's best work so far. Although he does have a new I Am X album out which isn't available from Amazon, unfortunately. Its called The Alternative. I haven't heard the whole thing yet but from what I have heard, it sounds like another excellent album. Find it, if you can.

This is one of the most incredible pieces of audio intelligence in a LONG time. Chirs Corner's voice is both pleasurable and captivating. If you listen to "Mercy" and don't fall in love with him you may need to have your head examined. A definate must to any collector of true talent.

Let me clear one thing up before hailing this album. Chris Corner DID NOT leave the 'Pimps as the last reviewer stated. Actually they are currently recording the forth Sneaker Pimps album... Chris is envolved in the creational process but will share the mic with a new singer for this next album. I AM X is a side project for Chris to have his creative freedom from his work as with the rest of the 'Pimps and, as far as its known, has no intention of taking himself out of the 'Pimps picture.

Onto I AM X...

Chris Corner has created a audio landscape that lends itself perfectly to his voice with this album. Full of minimal electro beats, and the squelchy acidicness of the "Bloodsport" production, this is an album that follows the evolution of Corner's work to a T. Catchy and energitc tracks such as "Skin Vission" and "Kiss and Swallow" fit nicely next to the darker, emotional tracks "Your Joy Is My Low" and "Simple Girl". As with the other 'Pimps album, there is not one track on this album that I didn't enjoy and has made this album a staple on my ipod. Well done Chris.

This is a more than competent CD transfer of acoustic recordings of Sir Nigel Playfair's legendary 1920s revivals of The Beggar's Opera and its sequel Polly. Quite sufficiemt to show why the Beggar;s Opera production, meant to fill a few weeks' gap at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, ran for three years. And while Gay's sequel was like most sequels, not up to the original, this recording is the only source for the second-best ballad opera.

Right. Can't remember what state of sobriety I was in when I ordered this cd and I may have missed some key clues about its nature. But I was so excited to find anything claiming to relate to Gay's "Polly" (which otherwise seems to have completely disappeared after it was censored in the 18th century - even internet wise) that I bought this cd. Turns out it is a cd version of some music originally recorded in the early 1920's. It is moderately interesting even for someone who is not primarily interested in antigue recordings (aka "scratchy records") because the style may be closer to that of the original performance. (There is no reason to think that common tastes were better in the 18th century than in 1920.) It is certainly different than contemporaneous performances of BO.

Don't mean to be sexist - which I am - but the duets, choreses and male performances seem to be less antigue than the soprano pieces. The broads are simply squeaky. Something to do with frequency loss in early recordings, I expect. On the other hand, the bass songs are equally abrasive and archaic.

Even the notes about "Polly" in this cd are disappointing. No mention of the history of "Polly", no mention of the source for the music. Try googling for a link for Gay and Polly. If you find one, be sure to post - I would love to know.

Unless you are an academic involved with some of the most obscure corners of the history of recorded music, I would forget this one. Instead, root for someone to find and record Gay's Polly. And buy a more modern interpretation of the Beggar's Opera. I have certainly heard antique recordings restored more vibrantly than this cd - but I would think that depends to a large extent on the quality of what you have to start with.

The only reason I gave it 2 stars (for some reason, Amazon refuses to record my change from 1 to 2 stars; but that is computers for you) instead of 1 was because of I love the melodies of the songs so much. But I will also admit that it is possible that Gay have been lucky that Polly was suppressed - the melodies and lyrics are not nearly as good as BO. On the other hand, this cd is so antique that is an unfair basis for judgment, But what the H!

That once celebrated phrase "Numi Pieta" from Aida is sung here by Galina Vishnevskaya in the purest, loveliest, most sensitive, thoughtful, manner imaginable. I have never heard it better. Her vocalism is utterly exquisite in this unforgetable "Ritorna Vincitor" which is a dramatic aria centering in the middle register. She rivals Caniglia in my estimation as the finest in this aria but Vishnevskaya's Italian is very very Russian in cadence, inflection and coloration, which probably explains the limited exposure of this version for it is not acceptable.

Some of the highlights are Jeritza's Vissi D'arte, Eva Turner's superior In Questa Reggia, no one comes close to La Turner (Nilsson included), Caniglia's Siberia, she was a great singer of Giordano, Olivero, Ponselle's totally unrivalled Vestale aria, Fuch's Hojotojo!, Lubin, Varnay, Nilsson, Sayao all heard at their best! Arangi-Lombardi is as usual unforgetable in the L. Borgia aria.

The list goes on in this 3 CD collection! It's amazing for any person who wants a record of very great interpretations.
