I think that the sound of Saint Saens Music is very unique. I think that anyone out there wanting to listen to some excellent writing I assure you that Saint Saens has written it. On behalf of Amazon I would definitely rate this music 5 stars. I thank Amazon for a perfect portrayal of his works. You shoppers out there might want to take a look at buying this.

Astounding!!!.......2000-10-06

I have come accross very few CD's that have 74 minutes of music that I enjoy. This CD is one of those. Mason Jones does a great job on Morceau, everyone likes danse bachannalle, the piano concerto is great, it's just a really enjoyable CD to own. I recommend it highly, it's one of my favorites.

Great Selections, So-So Collection.......2000-06-23

As all good elementary school music teachers know, Saint-Saëns could evoke emotions from a rock. I don't know if it's his masterful command (or creation) of the idioms of music, or whether it's the formal structure of his compositions, but there's never any confusion about how one feels when listening to this Apollo.

This Sony recording supposedly collects his best. It does and it doesn't. The "Danse Macabre"--a perennial Saint Saëns fave--is definitely better than any others on the market--crisper, livelier, and ... er... creepier. And the Bacchanale is also superbly done. (Don't take my word for it though--you can compare these yourself from the various samples.) But as great as these individual pieces are, Sony failed to bring to the "Swan" the rest of the zoo from "Carnivale des Animaux," and, worse, they forgot the "Aquarium," too! Plus, the "Organ Symphony" *must* be heard in its entirety to sound like the serious piece of music that it is.

I haven't found the noumenal Saint-Saëns collection yet. But this one surely isn't phenomenal.

Great music.......2006-10-02

I love to listen to music when I cook. This CD had the whole family dancing in the kitchen. Great stuff.

Gabin's "Mr. Freedom" is a breath of fresh air from most of the stuff I listen to these days, but that's not enough to warrant it a "5". I would argue that it's a little cheesy and repetitive in spots (see the female singer in "Into My Soul" for the first part, and "Bang Bang To The Rock N Roll" for the second). Overall, however, it's a very good lounge music album that I think genre fans will like a lot. I don't have any other album that sounds like it, so I don't know the best way to describe it - I suppose it's bluesy/jazzy early 1900's-ish sounding lounge music (sorry if that was confusing hehe). There are no bad songs here, but I think most would agree that the first 3 are the best songs on the album. The only problem with the album is its slight repetitiveness and it's slightly cheesy and guilty nature, but otherwise I think genre fans will really like it. Overall I would highly recommend this!

Italian duo Gabin has done a masterful job of concocting 10 tracks fused with bossa nova, electro-jazz, soul, blues and electronica. Not quite as dance-floor oriented as their debut that brought us "Doowap, Doowap, Doowap", "Mr. Freedom" still has stellar moments that will have you shaking a tail-feather, like the infectious 60s influenced, "Into My Soul", sung marvellously by Dee Dee Bridgewater, and the uplifting "Just Be Yourself" to only name a few. This CD is perfect for your next soiree of bougie wanna-bes--just make sure they bring the vodka!

Pick Me Up in the Morning.......2005-11-23

Compared to his first album with 'doo uap', this album takes a completely different approach from its former Buddha Bar Hotel Costes style. To be honest, I am absolutely in love with this album, sadly, China Moses, although has talent, doesn't just quite cut it with jazzy house feel of the music, but overall...I tell you what..this is a feel good album through and through....definitely worth buying!

A beautiful and lush downtempo album from French artists Gabin. Perfect to listen to and very easy on the ears. Includes many great tracks like the fun Doo Uap, Doo Uap, Doo Uap. Makes you want to groove slinkily across your living room. I'm sure you have heard many of their tracks on countless compilations like Hotel Costes or other similar lifestyle compilations so you like the tunes and you should go ahead and get this CD and add it to your collection.

I have played this CD over and Over again in my store. out of all the music that I play (Claude Challe) Lounge and chill Cd 's of various types, This one by far has been ask the question, What is playing and where can I get it.

Not as good as Thievery Corporation.......2004-02-03

Some songs are more inspired than others: I heard Gabin vs. Cal's Bluedo in the music store and bought the album, but some parts of the CD are just plain cheezy. The beginning of La Maison and Mille et Une Nuit des Desires are boring, elevator-music-ish crap-ola. But overall, it's groovin.

A perfect gem!.......2003-11-18

This is one those RARE CDs where every song is a perfect gem. If you like the titles that are recommended because they're "like this" -- then you'll LOVE this one. I gave a copy to a friend who is a school teacher and she said how she would rush to get in her car at the end of the day to switch this on because "it feels like climbing into a warm, relaxing bath." Plus, it has a great mix of medium- and fast-tempo tunes too--all winners!!!

GABIN'S GOT THAT SWANG!!!.......2003-07-16

I discovered "Gabin" after buying the renowned "Hotel Costes" series, volume 5 to be specific, and let me say that I was immediately hooked on these guys after hearing their rendition of "Doo Uap, Doo Uap, Doo Uap!" After looking up "Gabin" on the internet and discovering they had a CD out, I had to get it. Of course, local record stores didn't have it in stock (how did I know this?), so I had to purchase it from the illustrious Amazon.com "winkwink!" It came in the mail a few days ago and it hasn't left my CD player(s) yet! Filippo Clary and Max Bottini do an extraordinary job of mixing various styles of music from house, to jazz, to bossa nova, to funk and "swang!" "Une Histoire d'Amoure" is absolutely beautiful with a sense of summer fun--it's so good to hear male vocals for a change, even if they are in French. "Doo Uap, Doo Uap, Doo Uap" is my absolute favorite on this set. Gabin does the legendary Duke Ellington justice, just listen to those vocals and that alto sax! "BLOW, DADDY, BLOW!" Other songs of note are the bossa nova groove, "Sweet Sadness" with haunting male vocals and flawless strings and piano accompaniments. "Mille et Une Nuit des Desires" featuring Ana Carril Obiols is outstanding with a beat that is guaranteed to get you moving. If only I had taken French in college!! "Urban Nights" is a late night favorite of mine, sure to get all the lovers in the house ready for romance. And the sex...uhh, I mean, sax is awesome!! "Azul Anil" is yet another stand out track on this CD...the intro makes you think it's going to be a downtempo groove but a minute later it breaks out into one of the best house beats I've heard in a while!! All in all, "Gabin" will make a nice addition to any music lovers CD collection, especially if you're craving originality, creativity, excellent mixing and production...a quality many artists these days are seriously lacking.

We ordered two versions of "Carnival of the Animals" at the same time and this one was a disappointment because the music is meaningless without the wonderful poetry of Ogden Nash. The Boston Pops recording is much better because it does include the brief narrative that introduces each segment.

El carnaval de los animales una genial obra destinada a ser una introduccion a la musica selecta de los niños es entretenida, didactica y mas extraordinaria de lo que puede esperarse, instrumentos que se convierten en animales en una zoologica suite son increibles. La interpretacion esta a cargo de lo que se llamo Philippe Entremont and ensemble, casi un grupo de amigos reunidos para hacernos disfrutar de musica alegre y original, sorprendente, entre otros forman el grupo Gaby Cassadesus, Yo Yo ma, Yan Pascal Tortellier y el xilofonista Michel Cerutti.
La otra parte del CD la incluye un grupo de obras sinfonicas magnificentes Bacchanale de Sanson y Dalila, la marcha militar francesa, una extraordinaria Dansa Macabra y la espectacular Sinfonia con Organo. Todo este grupo de obras esta a cargo de Eugene Ormandy y la orquesta de Filadelfia en interpretaciones sin comparacion, cercanos a la perfeccion, vientos, cuerdas y percusion sin igual. Para la sinfonia el portentoso E. Power Biggs (quien hizo otra grabacion de esta sinfonia junto a Ormandy) hace del instrumento casi barroco un solista estremecedor.
Disfruten de un Cd que es generoso en variedad y en calidad interpretativa, sin igual, imperdible.

Fun album of great-sounding music.......2003-05-05

This is a nice contrast; the huge sound of the Saint-Saens organ concerto with E. Power Biggs booming away, and the lovely Carnival of the Animals, perennial kid's favorite. This is a good introduction to classical music for the young listener; after beguiling them with the Swan and the Aquarium and the appealing xylophones in Fossils, you can wallop them by cranking up the stereo and blasting the organ at them. A real hoot for the entire family. Who said classical music has to be boring?

Great starting point, but not much else........2000-03-14

Being a Vivaldi and Albinoni fan myself, many of my CD collections include many from these two composers. I was once new to this composer and this CD is a great way to to be introduced to the wonderful works that this once neglected genius has written. As one can see from the tracklist, it includes famed pieces such as the Four Seasons. In addition to the Four Seasons,this CD also includes Gloria, a genera that Vivaldi is not so famous for but nonetheless a magnificant track to listen. In short, as a (starter's kit) to Vivaldi, this is one of if not the best CD to have in one's collection. The only complain that I have about this CD is that it contains some movements of certain concertos rather than the whole concerto and thus as a later collection, this CD would probably not be a good buy. As a starting (being a first or second)CD to Vivaldi however, this is the CD to get. In addition, the booklet contains a historical timeline of around the period that Vivaldi lived which strengths my opinion that this CD is best targeted for a novince listener that knows almost nothing of Vivaldi's life rather than an experienced listener that knows somewhat of his life. Tracks I recomend are of course the Four Seasons, but keep in mind that each season on this CD is performed by a different ensemble, the guitar concerto and the flute concerto (the flute concerto is incomplete in this CD). Five stars would have been given solely on the basis of variety of the CD, but overall not very homogenous (ie., way too many performers in this CD-does not give the listener a chance a acclumate to a certain ensemble's style). My recommendation for anyone who is relatively new to Vivaldi is to buy this CD and if you like it, then branch out from here. If not, at least you can say that you own a Vivaldi CD. Thanks.

Saint-Saëns dedicated this Third Symphony to Liszt, the great pianist, and so he decided to include prominent keyboard parts in the work. Not only does it use an organ in the second and fourth movements, but there's also a prominent part for piano, sometimes for two players. Eugene Ormandy's is one of the four really great recordings of the work--both interpretively and sonically. It's also combined with spectacular performances of the sexy "Bacchanale" from Samson and Dalilah as well as the famous "Danse Macabre." With the chamber version of Carnaval thrown it, this is a fantastic bargain at budget price. --David Hurwitz

true excelence on this cd. Classical music does not always have to be full of enigma. That is what is shown here. Danse macabre is not very original. It has some eastern feel. It is a interesting piece. Did i mention the good sound quality?

Dos obras distintas, muy lejanas, unidas por la genialidad de un frances que demostro que todo no estaba escrito (o compuesto aun).
El carnaval de los animales una genial obra destinada a ser una introduccion a la musica selecta de los niños es entretenida, didactica y mas extraordinaria de lo que puede esperarse, instrumentos que se convierten en animales en una zoologica suite son increibles. La interpretacion esta a cargo de Philippe Entremont and ensemble, casi un grupo de amigos reunidos para hacernos disfrutar de musica alegre y original, sorprendente, entre otros forman el grupo Gaby Cassadesus, Yo Yo ma, Yan Pascal Tortellier, el xilofonista Michel Cerutti y por cierto el genial pianista Philippe Entremont.
La otra parte del CD la incluye un grupo de obras sinfonicas magnificentes Bacchanale de Sanson y Dalila, la marcha militar francesa, una extraordinaria Dansa Macabra y la espectacular Sinfonia con Organo. Todo este grupo de obras esta a cargo de Eugene Ormandy y la orquesta de Filadelfia en interpretaciones sin comparacion, cercanos a la perfeccion, vientos, cuerdas y percusion sin igual. Para la sinfonia el portentoso E. Power Biggs (quien hizo otra grabacion de esta sinfonia junto a Ormandy) hace del instrumento casi barroco un solista estremecedor.
Disfruten de un Cd que es generoso en variedad y en calidad interpretativa, sin igual, imperdible.

Carnival of the Animals and more.......2002-12-28

Like some other people, I bought this album with an eye towards having a complete version of Saint-Saens' wonderful "Carnival of the Animals".

But I was favorably impressed by the playing of E Power Biggs on the Organ parts of Saint-Saens' "Symphony #3". His playing was masterful, to say the least, and it was not overpowered by the backing of the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Eugene Ormandy.

The additional features of the Bacchanale (from Saint-Saens' "Samson and Dalila"), the French Military March, and the "Danse Macabre" only add to the luster of this fine CD. The Bacchanale only whets my appetite for a complete copy of "Samson and Dalila". The "Marche Militaire Francaise" makes me want to hear the remainder of "Suite Algerienne". And the "Danse Macabre" makes a wonderful prelude to "Carnival of the Animals".

Those who do not have a complete copy of "Carnival of the Animals", one of Saint-Saens' most recognizable pieces, will not go wrong by selecting this to add to their library of Classical music. Even those who have other versions of "Carnival" will be pleased by the other selections on this CD. 75 minutes of pure power and pleasure.

Good but not great Organ Symphony.......2002-12-16

Although this interpretation of the Organ Symphony delivers for the most part - delicate when needed, intense to contrast - I find that the tempo in the finale is much too quick, and races through what should be so much more grandiose. Also, the poor recording of the timpani (sounds at times like it was in another room) is especially disappointing as the last few bars sail by. A good disc for its coverage of Saint-Saens' repertoire, but the end of the Organ Symphony leaves one disappointed.

Whimsical music, expertly performed!.......2002-09-30

A must-have for any classical lover or anyone who wants a broader appreciation of music. A delight to listen to, especially as arranged and performed by these excellent musicians.

Les Immortels: Jean Gabin. By [...]

Many, many moons ago, around 1973-1975 (three of my four or five happiest years) while I was driving my Peugeot 505 in Paris, I heard a "song" by Jean Gabin (one of the "Monstres Sacrés" of the French cinematographic industry) where he constantly repeated "Je Sais".

In fact, it was a narrative with a discrete piano in the background, about a man who keeps saying "I know" during all his life, until he realizes that he only knows one thing:

"Le jour où quelqu'un vous aime, il fait très beau" ~ "The day when somebody loves you, it's a very beautiful day" "Il fait très beau"!

There is only a very short period while Gabin sings in this number ("un mauvais moment à passer") as they say in France... but the rest of it is captivating thanks to the low-pitched voice of the actor in his mature age.

At the end, he concludes: "Je sais seulement qu'on ne sait jamais rien" ~ "I only know that one never knows anything". Antoine de Saint Flour (main character of Jean Anouilh's play "Cher Antoine", his masterpiece, that I read with my French students for years) already said in 1969: "On ne sait rien, on ne saura jamais rien" ~ "One knows nothing, one will never know anything"

"Maintenant je sais" is the song that opens this CD, that I finally purchased from Amazon.com more than thirty years after I heard it for the first time. Once that phantoms of times past applied enough pressure under Florida's sunshine.

The second song is « Quand on s'promène au bord de l'eau ». This is an old French classic of 1936 : words by Julien Duvivier, music by Marice Yvain. It was the musical theme of the film « La Belle équipe » (1936) by the same Julien Duvivier, with Jean Gabin, who sings it and Charles Vanel, another « Monstre Sacré » of the French cinema, as the second character. Thirteen other songs follow, but they are less important: « Qu'est-ce que tu dis d'ça », « C'est chouette d'être un monsieur », « Chanson de mariniers », « Ingénument naïvement », « Je ne dis pas non », « La môme caoutchouc », « Léo Léa Elie », « c'est un petit rien », « On m'suit », « quand on a ça », « C'est moi le mari », « Avec ma petite gueule », « Viens Fifine »

Jean Gabin, who was one of the greatest actors of all times, was far from singing like Pavaroti, Sinatra or Dean Martin, but some of these songs were famous in the 1930's and the 1940's; and if you like French accordion, you might enjoy this cheap CD in which the first number alone justifies the small change that you will pay for it.
