Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Customer Reviews:
OK.......2007-06-07
overall the album is ok...not all the songs live up to how wonderful "Underwater Love" is. It's not a bad album, but I wish there were more tracks! Underwater Love is the track that made me want to get the album. There are only 10 tracks and it is expensive because it's an import cd. I really do like the singer's voice though =) "Devil Mood" and "Numbers" have more Jungle elements intertwined with them while "Dark Walk" is an instrumental track that is more Trip-Hop. "Giulietta" is just a boring track and definetly a "filler" "Jamie Pan" is also a weak track...the album has a total of 10 tracks of which 3 range from 3 mins and 11 secs to 3 mins and 48 secs. The best track is unltimately "Underwater Love" which is a great 6 mins a 46 secs. Songs to download: "With You" and "Aguas de Marco" Also I think the group Supreme Beings of Leisure offers much better albums but they only sing in English.
Perfectly created together in a bliss of rhythmly beats!.......2007-05-26
All around a great CD! Nina's voice is downright smoky, seductive, playful, uplifting and smooth. The keyboards add a touch of flare throughout the CD, shifting it from past styles to present ones, as it goes from trip/hop, to bossa nova, to jazzy and all mixed in. Then adding in with it all kinds of creative blends and effects, a truly wonderful production, perfectly created together in a bliss of rhythmly beats! Something I just enjoy listening to constantly. If you like Sade, this is sort of like it, but with a sweet kick of juvenating spirit, a tad higher in tone and more imagination, simply put, it's like Sade on steroids! Definitely it's an improvement in the style, but you really can't give it a style as it fluctuates throughout the CD, and every song is simply great.
Underwater Love...........2007-05-20
I purchased this cd after hearing a demo version if Underwater Love, although the cd was a little hard to find, I finally procured a cd, even though it was from out of the country, but once you find a copy of this cd, you will not be disapointed. Their sound is definitely original, and very much their own. The album is seasoned with hints of trip hop and is very much Brazilian flavoured. This is truely a beautiful and brilliant debut album indeed. Other notable releases and projects are the band's second effort, Heroes of Nature, Lost in a Moment by Shrift (Nina Miranda), Da Lata (Chris Franck), Kv5 (Marc Brown), and Chris and Nina by Chris Franck and Nina Miranda should have their new album out sometime in June.
why is it so hard to find?.......2007-03-20
I was lucky i got the "last" one from mediaflow in jersey for $10 so the shipping was nil. Here's an idea you're thinking of buying a cd that you might like but are not sure, well take that money and combine in with a cd you'd like for sure and than buy this because it's so damn good. The music itself is so sick, and then add nina mirandas soft, SEXY vocals and damn you've got good music. She has such a great confident style i love it, the oooh ooh part in devil mood drives me crazy, buy it just for that. When I'm driving somewhere late at night, this cd is default.
Trip-hop French Bossa Nova Bliss.......2006-01-05
I fell in love with the song "Underwater Love" on the Ultimate Chillout CD Collection, but had not heard anything else by Smoke City until I recently purchased this CD. I am so glad that I finally screwed up the courage to pick this up. While I am not as completely blown away by this as some of the other reviewers here are, I am still quite impressed.
The entire album is incredible and all of the songs are just as fabulous as "Underwater Love", some even better I dare say. Sexy, smoky, sophisticated, and completely lounge-worthy. The vocals are incredible, and are delivered in a multiple of languages.
So go ahead, don't be afraid to take a chance on this. I would be hard-pressed to imagine any fan of trip-hop, bossa nova, or downtempo lounge disliking this unique little number, which is a perfect marriage of all three genres.

Love the talent and the music of this talented gentleman
The Flying Dutchman .......2006-09-02
A ndres DVDs get better, an excellent show in wonderful surroundings, I have his latest.
Content Excellent but marred by poor video........2006-04-18
I was dissapointed in this video from the viewpoint of very poor video quality. Barely on a par with VHS. I have a 480P front projector with an 80" diagonal picture and it was unwatchable on that system I had to view it on my 36" tv to have an acceptable picture and even then it was not great. I have several Andre Rieu videos and have never run into that before. According to other reviews Denon has put out a very poor product this time.
The show itself is terrific as Andre always is.
The Flying Dutchman.......2006-04-06
Excellent CD to listen to and relax, to listen while I'm working, and at any time of the day. Andre Rieu is good music!
Wonderful Performance.......2006-03-03
Andre's Flying Dutchman was a delight to watch. Filmed in Limberg, this concert is beautifully pieced together with a lovely array of music. The voices of his beautiful soloists add to the atmosphere of this wonderful concert. Something I would highly recommend.

it grows.......2007-01-30
...on you. I have a good friend who I typically introduce to good music, but occasionally he surprises me with something I have never heard and Mason Jennings is one. He first burned a batch of CD's for me back in mid 2005 and included some Mason Jennings. My wife and I have grown to love his songs, his voice, etc. Birds Flying Away was the album that took longest to acquire a taste for, but now I find myself listening to it all the time. There's a little Marley in there too.
An often overlooked album.......2006-03-07
Very overlooked. Just look at how many people have written reviews of this album as compared to his others. Basically I am writing this review to contest all those reviewers out there comparing Mason to Jack Johnson. I am a little tired of this happening. They are not close to being the same. Let me take that back... yes, they both play acoustic guitar, yes, they both are males, yes they both wear pants. I should say right now that I like Jack Johnson, I like his music. He writes cool little ditties that are very infectious. They tend to worm their way into your head and not want to leave, but the songs stop there. They don't leave you blown away; they don't leave you absolutely amazed; the lyrics don't leave goosebumps on your arms. No, Jack Johnson's music is light, friendly and void of any real emotions.
Mason Jennings, on the other hand, has the amazing ability to write goosebump songs that will blow you away. He writes with such an intesity that is almost frightening. His lyrics mean something, his melodies arc over the songs in such a way that one might think that the song was never really written, it was just always there, waiting to be sung. He is an amazing songwriter. I also love his voice. I've noticed some people writing reviews saying that they don't like it, that he sings slightly off key. I'm not disagreeing with this. He does sing slightly off key, he also plays in a flat tuning, but that's not the point. It's just part of his charm. Look at all the amazing songwriters that have sung off key... two that immediately pop to mind are Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Those two made it acceptable for future songwriters, such as Mason, to sing slightly off key.
So no, Mason is nothing like Jack Johnson. And I, for one, am glad for that. (No offense to Mr. Johnson.)
can music be more beautiful than this???.......2003-10-02
Mason Jennings is one of those musicians you are referred to by a friend, one of those acts you just happen to catch because you show up early for the headliner you came to see. However you arrive, you know that you have discovered something special. His second album, BIRDS FLYING AWAY, is tranquilizing all the way through. His voice is a little bit Dylan, and his acoustic guitar seems too simple. But what is it that makes Picasso the most impressive fingerpainter in the world? Mason Jennings has that same magic.

Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Customer Reviews:
Patchy, with some fine moments.......2003-06-14
The lively tracks fare best here. There is a lot to like about those particular tracks and the period tongue (loov instead of love, coom instead of come, etc) is not nearly as cumbersome as it might have been, due to the convincing performances of the singers.
However, the slower numbers are often, in my opinion, rather sour.
Having heard this disc several times, it strikes me that it becomes less attractive over time, with the novelty of the approach soon wearing thin.
Still, some tracks are very lively and the artists are obviously having fun bringing a rather unique angle to these pieces, so it might well appeal to those who like something unusual.
Recording quality is fine, though the final fade-out is clumsily managed.
Brilliant and alive!.......2002-10-07
This is a fresh, vibrant recording of a cross-section of Dowland's music, and will quickly dispel any myth of Dowland always being a composer of melancholy!
The singers use Elizabethan pronunciation, which can be quite revelatory.

MISSED OPPORTUNITY.......2004-12-08
If you've read this far, you're probably considering purchasing this CD because you're a fan of the fine British air war films and their soundtracks from which the selections contained therein are taken. Except that they're NOT, in fact, taken from the soundtracks: they're copied, very poorly, by a British "concert" band, the kind you can hear on any Sunday afternoon on any bandstand in any public garden in Blighty. Buyer beware then, mate. But I say, old boy, it would be awfully jolly if you could manage the genuine article sometime, what, there's a good chap. Pip, pip, cheerio!

Customer Reviews:
This is a solid, solid effort.......2006-08-15
Great, great musicians - and one of my favorite songs of all time "New Day" sometimes you have to reach a little bit higher and let it all hang out - pastoral is what I want in my music - technique only takes music soooo far - but vision and emotion are where you want your music to take you - out of the technique for technique sake and into the next level where music and enlightenment mingle together - whether it's a Tom Waitts slant on things that makes you smile or a Mozart concerto that's what music is - beyond the notes, the players chops or the vocal purity - it resides in the heart. Laurie Lewis certainly has that going on and she can play too!
A keeper!.......2004-05-15
Song samples don't do justice to the quality of the work on this beautifully recorded album. Lewis is a better fiddle player than singer, but although her voice can sometimes sound thin rather than supple, she and her bandmates are in fine form here. Consider "Diamond Joe," whose traditional lyrics sound like the cowboy version of a dispute between labor and management: Lewis sings the protaganist's part with convincing humor, anger, and contempt. The song is brassy because it needs to be.
Further down the road, a standout arrangement of "The Rope" is done "a cappella" style, with tenor Tom Rozum singing the lead vocal, and it's in the choruses and the gorgeous harmonies that Grant Street makes you forget that Martina McBride ever covered the same song. This version is the definitive one.
When the album turns pensive on a Louvin Brothers ballad ("I Wish it Had Been a Dream"), Lewis puts her fiddle down for a crack at rhythm guitar and a duet with Mr. Rozum. Both choices are good ones. One must imagine that the result pleased not only the Louvin Brothers, but also the Everly Brothers.
Add wonderfulness like that to energetic finger- and flatpicking by banjo demigod Tony Furtado, solid bassist Tammy Fassaert, and jazz-influenced guitarist, Scott Nygaard. The end result is a recording that stands up to repeated listening, marred only slightly by the overwrought pastoral imagery of "New Day."

Sibelius wrote a large number of songs, but they are not terribly well known, nor are there very many great ones. Like his piano music, he wrote them primarily for the money. Nevertheless, there are some masterpieces, particularly the lengthy orchestral ballad, "The Rapids- Rider's Brides," which has its own opus number (33), and which directly foreshadows the music of the evocative tone poem Luonnotar. Sibelius and several other composers orchestrated a fair number of his songs, which is a good thing because his piano writing was seldom very effective, his musical ideas being naturally orchestral in nature. This award-winning collection offers 18 orchestral arrangements of Sibelius's finest efforts in the genre, excellently sung by Jorma Hynninen, the great Finnish baritone of his generation. The music is well worth knowing. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Sibelius.......2000-11-17
Many of these songs were not originally written with an orchestral accompaniment in mind. But orchestra brings out new colors in these works, that I hadn't realized before when listening to them with piano accompaniment.
Hynninen sings beautifully throughout, and is in my opinion at his best in these songs. He has a special kind of light high baritone voice, that doesn't always work well in opera, but in Sibelius it works fantastically. Understanding the language and the cultural background of these songs helps as well.

Customer Reviews:
Birds Flying Away.......2004-06-03
I recently purchased this record at a small, independent record store in Philadelphia. Mason's name was mentioned among the likes of other neo-folk troubadours like Jack Johnson, Jon Swift and G. Love, all of whom I like, so I decided to give "Birds" a chance. I was slightly unimpressed after my first listen. Few songs were memorable to me, with the exception of Ballad for my One True Love, but like most good albums, this one definitely grew on me. Certain songs like Black Panther and Dr. King, as another reviewer mentioned, are too entrenched in obsolescent, beatnik idealism, but when Mason sings of love (Ballad for my One True Love, Train Leaving Gray) and distress (The Mountain, The Light), he shines quite brightly. Although Birds Flying Away emits a great deal of sunny positivity, it also possesses a dark, brooding undertone that is contrary to the work of nearly all of his contemporaries. Few musicians accurately balance dichotomous themes that manage to shed light upon both subjects at hand and maintain a steady cadence throughout the album. Mason Jennings; however, is capable of such craftmanship, and with "Birds Flying Away", he has evinced a stirring conglomeration of songs that touch upon the age-old ideas of love, hate, madness, evil, corruption and violence in a confident and copacetic way.
Deadpan fun!.......2002-12-25
I decided to first give this a listen on a Sunday afternoon by the pool while living in California. I was happy with the easygoing nature of this album, with an easy beat, easy guitar riffs, and an easy rhythm. MJ doesn't get too complicated on this CD, and pleasingly so. It seems as if he put his random musings down on paper and then started strumming his guitar (as evidenced by the first verse of the first song: "Make yourself at home, 'cause I'm going out across the street to get us some water, 'cause this water's brown and I'm so embarrassed to have you here, but I want you around."). But that's not a bad thing, just not the deep, soul-searching sort of lyrical genius that I was looking for at the time. However, with MJ's deadpan voice, I don't think what we really want out of him is some sort of epiphany. He depicts the everyday comings and goings of life very well, including life, love, and California (which this album seems to focus around). I definitely advocate anyone who loves acoustic poetry to pick this one up and give it a listen.
A departure for Mason that remains intriguing.......2002-04-29
The first time I listened to this record I was baffled over Mason's choice of subjects and use of loose, reggae- and jazz-flavored rhythms. But after a while, the heartfelt nature with which he paid tribute to Dr. King, the barely-boiling-over anger of Global Empire, the ode to true love in Ballad for My One True Love and the sighing loss of Train Leaving Gray seemed to pinpoint not only the struggles that Mason seemed to be facing as a songwriter but the same struggles that most of humanity faces in one form or another.
21st Century Folk Posturing.......2002-02-04
NPR gave Jennings a nice plug in January and it was on the strength of that review and interview that I purchased this CD in hopes of hearing one of the fresh new voices of this generation. What I heard was heavy-handed skin-deep Folkie posturing and middling musicianship. Advertised as a "voice" of 20somethings, I was disappointed that Jennings has nothing to say about the events going on around him -- or even those of the past decade. His songs retreat to the safety of tired 1960s coffehouse folk anthems: Vietnam and Martin Luther King. Hard to say anything new on these topics but it gives the illusion of depth, and this album needs all the illusions that such themes can conjure.
One of the best out there today.......2002-01-28
To see that this album is the 400th best selling album on amazon.com speaks volumes for how for Mason's music has come in the past few years. Word is starting to spread about this talented folk/country singer-songwriter, and it won't be long, I hope, before he gets the true national recognition he deserves.
This album introduced me to Mason, so I'm a little partial to it over the self-titled one. For me, Mason's lyrics about his personal experiences of love, loss, pain and redemption spoke to me in a way that few musicians ever have. I can't say that his lyrics and music won't affect you in the same way, but I'd wager that because of the timeless truth Jennings reveals, you're more likely than not to connect with him at some level.
My favorites on this album include "Confidant," "Ballad for my One True Love," "Dr. King," "The Light," and "Train Leaving Gray." To make one brief comment about Jennings' guitar work: it's very unique and ingenuitive...but not so much that it disturbs the flow of his songs.
Overall, I can't recommend this album to any fan of music highly enough. For more info on Mason check out the NPR interview that was done on him New Year's day 2002. You should be able to find it by searching their archive for "mason jennings." Peace, everyone.
