The impact of Marilyn Manson's subversive musical agenda has waned, and what's left is a provocative, talented artist writing affecting, powerful, and yes, controversial songs. Although Holy Wood is the third title of a trilogy that began with 1996's Antichrist Superstar, the album stands on its own. Rife with references to the Beatles and the Kennedys, and full of pop-culture barbs, Holy Wood is a musically diverse and powerful statement. The memorable sing-along "Disposable Teens" boasts the same kind of staccato, Teutonic, first-thrusting power introduced with "Beautiful People," while "Fight Song" is the Sex Pistols meets Blur by way of Nirvana. While a futuristic, nihilistic tint pervades Manson's work, passion is also prevalent, notably in the spooky acoustic number "A Place in the Dirt" and the brutal "Death Song." Like Marilyn Manson the man, Holy Wood is intelligent, dynamic, and multifaceted, with myriad charms that are evident to the tuned-in listener. --Katherine Turman

Pretty good........2007-06-18
This Manson album settles pretty well with me. It has some great tracks, such as "Disposable Teens", "The Fight Song", "Godeatgod", "The Nobodies", "The Love Song", "The Death Song" and even more. It also has some great and well thought out lyrics to accompany its many hit songs. Most of the lyrical content revolves around Manson's feelings toward the Columbine High School incident in 1996 and how the media claimed that the two assassins involved had been great fans of his while only a short time after it was found that not one of the two boys had been even remote fans of Manson's and their statements were disproved.
The only downfall I saw with this album was how it seemed to drag on a bit. It's almost as if Manson was trying to fit just a little too many songs into one disc. Otherwise, the album doesn't have too many noticeable flaws.
Overall, this CD will definitely turn the listener's stomach with its passionately riveting sound and corresponding lyrics. This is definitely one of Manson's more emotionally driven LP's and it's very recognizable to anyone who listens that Manson put his heart and soul into it. This CD will definitely give you something to swallow. Recommended.
MANSON.......2007-05-10
THIS CD IS EXCELLENT!IT'S ALSO INTERESTING.I LOVE THE SONG TITLED: KING KILL 33. THE MUSIC'S HYPNOTIC. THE SONG TITLED: COUNT TO 6 AND DIE IS SOMETHING DIFFERENT.THE SONG TITLED: IN THE SHADOW OF THE VALLEY OF DEATH IS SO SAD.THERE'S SO MANY DIFFERENT STYLES OF MUSIC ON THIS CD,AND SO MANY EMOTIONS.MANSON'S REALLY SOMETHING SPECIAL!
No Longer Popular.......2007-04-26
The first Manson release of the millenium sees both the singer and his backing band's popularity in doubt, as Emenem and other rappers were all the rage. Not even a throwback to his gothic days could save this from going only gold certified, and gold certified years after its original release date. By this time they were stuck in the 70s, and Manson was again controversial but didn't draw much protest. The music itself is a throwback to his Potrait days, but like I said, the band's popularity was in doubt. It seemed more like the Thrill Kill Kult- famous, but not popular, camp industrial music only someone who didn't care if they were popular themself could get into.
Attention: Marilyn Manson Peaked Here..........2007-03-13
Yes folks, this is Marilyn Manson at his best. After this album, Marilyn Manson would begin their decline.
The Positives: John5's guitar work is at its peak on this album. Songs like "Disposable Teens", "The Fight Song", "The Nobodies", "The Death Song", "Lamb of God", and "The Love Song" are some of the finest Manson guitar tunes to date. Also, the lyrics reach their peak with this album. Lyrically, this album is a proper fuse of Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals. Therefore, I believe this to be the peak of Marilyn Manson. Everything is running on full power (lyrics, guitars).
The Negatives: None...every track on this record is very intelligent and enjoyable.
Personal Favorites: The Fight Song, Disposable Teens, The Death Song, The Nobodies, Lamb of God, The Love Song, Coma Black, and King Kill 33.
The Further Decline of Marilyn Manson.......2007-01-25
Marilyn Manson was a phenomenon to be reckoned with. Musically, Manson is inferior to other contemporaries of his day (ie, Nine Inch Nails); however, they were overshadowed by the fact that Manson was more than a band: it was a statement perfectly crafted for alienated teens. Manson gradually transformed from a band with a message to a lifestyle with its very own 'poster band'. Manson reached his musical zenith with 'Antichrist Superstar' (his best album), and then declined with 'Mechanical Animals'. 'Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death)', although better than 'Mechanical Animals', is still not Manson at his best. He seems to sacrifice the music for the concept behind the album. The album seems long drawn out, and some songs are extremely repetitive (ie, 'The Fight Song', 'Disposable Teens'). The best song on the album is probably 'Cruci-fiction in Space'.

..............Too Sexy For Death....................2007-02-23
This is one one the funnest albums I own. I love these guy's and I would like give the musical credit to Jesse 'the Devil' Hughes. And Josh 'Baby Duck' Homme for finding the Devil and teaming up with and bringing him to us. I hope these guys make a 3rd, 4th and so on....
Good tunes for driving.......2007-02-10
now, I know this CD gets a little redundant with the riffs and lyrics, but it is a stoner rock classic. I just love the music and don't care who else likes it...
...nuff said!
File this under the dictionary definition of "rock".......2006-04-09
Even though it's Josh Homme's fun side project, EODM seems to be Jesse Hughes' life. This album rocks, with only a few missteps, from start to finish. The songs are short, raucous, randy (picture Austin Powers saying "randy"), and completely irrelevant to the great philosophical, psychological, and sociopolitical problems of our day. It's all good times and winking occult references.
Go Eagles!.......2006-01-02
Josh Homme has become a sort of "King Midas" of good modern rock. I don't understand, but Kyuss and Eagles of Death Metal are as amazing as Queens of the Stone age. Litarally, everything this guy touches turns to gold. Eagles of Death Metal rock like mad, to sum things up. Yes, the songs may sound the same, but its a good thing in this case. Just pick it up, especially all you Queens of the Stone Age fans.
so sexy...........2005-12-22
I come across Eagles of Death Metal through my love for QOTSA, and Kyuss, and well anything to do with Josh Homme! so i decided to downlaod a few tracks, which i found absolutly amazing. There are not many bands like this around, who mix rock and blues with a red-neck touch! i had to buy the album!
this album is stunning! i honestly think this is one of the best albums of the past few years. stand out songs would be Flamesw go Higher, Whorehoppin, Already Died and san berdoo sunburn!
these are fantastic live too!

Album Description
The last few years have seen the North London six-piece building an international reputation as a cutting edge collective with a unique approach to their craft, both lyrically and musically. This is the most important prog metal release in a very long time. With a massive UK and Japanese following, Sikth have set their sights on the US.

MASSIVE improvement.......2007-02-26
when i got Trees by sikth, i was stoked that a band could release something so progessive in a sea of rubbish metal that had been fathered by limpbizkit and mothered by korn.
the follow up album has awesome vocals, brilliant beats, and some truely spaced out guitars have made Death of a Dead Day so freakin' heavy it'll leave you with half a face and a lump of coal where your brain may have one resided. known to have caused relapses in cured schizophrenics, the stop/start jaggerdness of the music should be limited to those who actually play an instrument, and have an understanding of why not everything should sound like Nicklecrap and Hinder.
this cd will leave you wondering 'why didn't i get this sooner? am i some sort of wanker?'
sweet
Can't Quite Put My Finger On It............2006-11-15
Sikth are a British avant-garde metal band; purveyors of a hybrid style of metal/rock/electronica/hip-hop which is difficult to pull off, and in this case success seems limited.
Genre-blurring styles seem all the rage in heavy music these days, which certainly encourages artistic freedom. However, for each band that manages to fuse disparate styles into something coherent (Isis, Giant Squid, Unexpect) there are others who fail.
The problem with Sikth for me is the lack of direction. They certainly have chops, and some of it is interesting and quite enjoyable, but much of it seems chaotic and almost unlistenable, with lots of nearly incoherent instrumentation competing with multiple singers and vocal styles for space and structure. It never really seems to gel into a compelling whole which rises above it's complicated separate elements, which is very necessary in this style of music in order for it to have the desired impact. The listener is left wondering what exactly they were going for...lots of potential, but probably a C- at best. I would recommend many other "post-rock"/metal bands before this one.
A greater focus on song structure as a foundation for the music punctuated instead of overwhelmed by their chaotic quirkiness might be a better direction for this band.
Chevere Que Chevere.......2006-08-29
I consider myself jaded, In this hardcore/metal/extreme niche that I have carved for myself I have seen and heard it all (or at least I thought I had until I heard Sikth. I bought this LP on a whim after seeing the video for "Bland Street Bloom" on the Bieler Bros. Records website and I am glad I did. Their sound is an undescribable montage of their influences infused with a unique je ne sais quoi that enthralls the listener and keeps them coming back. If you are into noise core or are mildly psychotic, misanthropic and somewhat homicidal check them out and revel in the utter madness of it all.
FUN FACTS
6 = (six equals)
1. number of members of Sikth
2. number of strings on a guitar.
3. average length in minutes of songs on Death of a Dead Day.
4. 6 + 6 = 12 = number of tracks on this album.
5. number of times i heard hype about this band before I finally checked them out.
6. the track number of my favourite song on this album.
are sikth going to eventually take over the world?!.......2006-08-09
i have been a sikth fan for a long time now......... they as a band have inspired my band in many different ways and are also very sound blokes.
I have been waiting for this new album for ages, ever since i heard the first one actually, but when i put it in my cd player and listened to it i realised that sikth aint a tiny under grund british band with a cult following any more, but are begining to hit the global and main stream industry, hardcore. This shocked me....i wasn't prepared for this, and when i heard it i wasn't too sure if i liked it. I beleive getting this big warner bros. deal and going over to america to do the recording really killed the quaintness of the tech metal lords and has takn away a part of sikth that really apealed to me
basically.........the new album is very PHAT with mental and inovitive parts to it. IT IS BASICALLY THE LAST 20 YEARS OF METAL ROLLED UP IN TO ONE ALBUM! you get meshuggah, dream thearter, metallica, slayer, pantera, allan holdsworth....thelist goes on and on. you wont hear another album like and is deffinately worth the £10 out of your walet (or purse)..........BUT (for old school sikth fans) if you are looking for the old sikth we all loved, you aint really gonna find it hear! this album has seen the extinction of the infamous sikth breakdowns and rests from the intensitys of the bands music, also part of the british charm and wit is missing (but not gone). Dont get me wrong, its still sikth and its still way better then 98% of the music thats out there but my over view of the album is that it is OVER PRODUCED and americanised! the guitars get lost and entagled with the vocals and the bass to the point where its very hard to tell what is going on, this i belive is not down to sikths writing but the balance of the recording....over all the album is good and you should buy it!
This album isn't for everyone........2006-07-21
Even if you considers yourself a diehard metal fan, this album may not be for you. The song structures and melodic content are in one word; unconventional. If you're into the kind of metal that's written in the verse-chorus-verse pop standard, then don't buy this album. If you're into the kind of metal that still flirts with the same rehashed, tonal melodies, then don't buy this album. If you're totally capable of accepting a different approach in compositional structure and dissonant harmonies, then by all means buy this album. It's culturally relevant.

Now, this is some heavy stuff.......2007-06-06
While there are some metalcore bands that suck, there are some bands out there that I like including Despised Icon, Chimaira, Between the Buried and Me, The Red Chord, and especially this band that I'am currently reviewing The Acacia Strain. I got into this band when I heard the song "4x4" on my Music Choice Metal Channel (channel 310 on my television). So I went out and got their new album "The Dead Walk", and I really like what I've heard. In a time where most metalcore bands today just sound the same, that's not even the case with this band. The Acacia Strain come like a cross between the brutality and aggression of Pantera, and the technical complexity of Meshuggah. Frontman Vincent Bennent has got great brutal growling vocals that he just spews right from the guts. The guitarists on here come across a hybrid of the super-aggressive buzzsaw-like tone playing style of Pantera, and the catchy yet complex time changes of Meshuggah. The riffs are very catchy, heavy, and downright catchy. The drumming is very impressive as well with lots of nice tempo and ryhthm changes. My favorite song on here is without question "4x4" which contains heavy grinding riffs, brutal pounding drums, nice tempo changes, and even a guitar solo. Other favorites on here include "Whoa! Shut It Down" which has catchy bobbing rhythms, and the earthshaking riffs and vicious drumwork on "Burnface". "Demolishor" is another favorite which includes some more demolishing riffs, as well as some hefty double bass drumwork and sick gut wrenching vocals. The closing title track "The Dead Walk" features more head pounding riffs, clobbering rhythms, and a nice solo. Overall this whole album is just awesome. So if you're looking for an album, that's just heavy, brutal, and all out abrasive, then this album is yours. Skip anything by 36 Crazyfists, Atreyu, Bleeding Through, and buy this album instead. Enjoy!!

I think I'm physically injured!!.......2007-01-04
This is one of those albums that just grabs you and then shakes you around then drops you again only to pick you up and shake you again. Is it just me or does Adam D seem to produce most of everything that is good right now.. let me re-phrase anything that is just blindingly heavy and crushing. The Dead Walk is a meshuggah like sludge of off timed beats and brutal vocals. 3750 was pretty dope but this just owns! I bought this during the X-Mas season (it's very holiday) but listened to it and loved every moment.. don't pass it up, it's a great CD and deserves a listen.
Path of Destruction.......2006-12-06
The Acacia Strain are a new metal band I had decided to investigate after reading some good reviews, and after repeated spins I can certainly recommend them to any fan of death metal or grind.
One of the first things you notice about The Acacia Strain is the sheer ferocity of their attack; they pummel you severely right off the bat with the neo-Meshuggah-like polyrhythms of "Sarin: The End" and don't let up throughout the entire disc. Tight, sometimes quite progressive riffs adorned with harmonic squeals and never lacking in heaviness; this is a great new band whose guitarists come across like a hybrid of Pantera (in the super-agressive playing style and buzzsaw-like tone) and Meshuggah (in the complex time changes). Add the harsh, quasi-death metal vocal style and nihilistic lyrics, and the overall package is a great metal release. Recommended if you need a dose of the good old ultraviolence.
Pantera like Devastation.......2006-09-22
The guitar riffs are thunderous unlike any other band out there. The base and drum are pummeling as other reviewers mentioned. The roaring vocals compliment this apocolyptic presence of the music.. But, this band changes up the tempo during their each song to a very catchy groove.. Overall this a more mature album then their previous ones with a faster tempo and a tighter sound..
I saw them live and these guys rip it up..
A Metalcore CD That Isn't The Same-Old.......2006-09-19
Many bands these days just hate to sound generic and wish to stand out in the crowd. While certain bands will try but fail, the Acacia Strain is an example of how they break barriers with this CD. With this being their 3rd full-length, the band proves that they haven't let themselves down at all. If you dig guitars that are downtuned to A, you will dig this. If you dig hardcore with elements of sludge metal in it, this will be your new favorite band. And no, this band isn't ALL breakdowns. Recommended for something heavy and fun.

Set in dark, slickened streets and populated by a stellar ensemble cast, this adaptation of Frank Miller's hard-edged, film noir inspired graphic novels plays like comic-book-come-to-lifenot surprising, as Miller is credited as Robert Rodriguez's co-director (with a bit of help from Quentin Tarantino). The soundtrack to this bleak, compelling exercise in pure noir stylism is provided mostly by director Rodriguez, with an occasional assist from past collaborators John Debney (Spy Kids and its sequel) and Graeme Revell (From Dusk Til Dawn). While their largely synth-driven cues tend naturally towards brooding atmospheric soundscapes, their tense electro-rhythms are seasoned with bracing doses of sinewy, sensual sax and dotted with the occasional bongo flourish, details that musically evoke both a shadowy humanity and the film's genre-savvy roots. Also featuring disparate, yet wholly integrated contributions from techno-house savants Fluke (the hypnotic "Absurd") and 20th century Mexican classicist Silvestre Revueltas, it's the sinister flipside to the future-jazz sheen of Vangelis' classic Blade Runner.--Jerry McCulley

i listened to the servant song and i know everyone said its pretty well known that that is the song they used in the trailer, but if you listen to "broken chairs" by built to spill it really sounds like parts of the trailer music too. and its also a good song. so i would recommend trying that as well!

An addendum to "FangsFirst" comment.......2005-09-16
FangsFirst is absoluty correct -- trailer music is almost never on the movie's soundtrack. An interesting additional bit of trivia, however; almost all trailer themes ARE from a movie soundtrack, just from a DIFFERENT movie than the one the trailer is for!
So if you're looking for "Cells" by The Servant (the song from the Sin City trailer), take a look at the soundtrack to Transporter 2. You'll find it along with another song by The Servant. "Cells" does have lyrics to it (which aren't on the Sin City trailer), but it's still a damned good song.
Just thought I'd share that with everybody.

Although basically an EP, don't let the 9 tracks fool you, at just under 30 mins track 1 is an awesome breakdown intro that belts out "This is true crime!", track 5 is bunch of creepy noises (not a song) and track 8 is an acoustic interlude which you may think of as waste of space, but it was a great contrast before the best and most brutal song on the album, "Sun Poison and Skin Cancer" with guest vocals from Toby Dutkiewicz (brother of Adam D. guitarist from Killswitch Engage). This is also the longest song on the album at just under 5 mins. Altogether a very solid EP (although its not, it gives me more satisfaction to think of it that way). This band stands out from other bands, with some of the best and most frequent breakdowns, a few melodic parts reminiscent of All That Remains, some rock parts similar to Every Time I Die (Hot Damn! era) and with solid death metal vocals (that you can understand???) to top it off. Slow, extremely tuned down and booming breakdowns assault the listener time and time again without repeating itself. Production done by Adam D. which is always good. For fans of All That Reamins, On Broken Wings, Despised Icon, Blood has Been Shed.
Favorite Song: Sun Poison and Skin Cancer
Good, But Way Too Short [3.5 Stars].......2006-02-17
Ok so this cd has seen some controversial reviews thus far on this page. Far fans of pure "metal" ala Pantera and the like and especially those who hate the hardcore/metalcore scene and its trademarks, The Acacia Strain is probably not the band for you. Yes they don't reinvent the metalcore wheel, but that doesn't mean this cd is a write-off. In fact "3750" is one of the most addicting and satisfying cds I picked up in 2004. Basically those who are comparing this band to anything like Korn, Bleeding Through, KSE or Everytime I Die are pretty far off base. However there's still many things that The Acacia Strain gets right on this cd. And when they get it right, boy does it work.
J. Doe has pretty much nailed their sound on the head. Basically TAS does sound like a heavier version of Cannae or Innovocation of Nehek. This isn't that surprising since all three bands are on the same label (Prosthetic Records), and all share the same producer (Adam D. or Killswitch Engage). Yes, too big of a deal has been made about this band having three guitarists (probably the reason their third guitarist is no longer with them) but that has little to do with the quality of the music. For what it's worth, "3750" is a crushing slab of metalcore that will bombard you with the heaviest breakdowns and vocals you've probably heard in while. Listen to "Sunpoison And Skin Cancer" or the blistering "Brown Noise" and try not moving with the punishing rhythms. While the guitarists aren't turning out amazingly complicated riffs, they do a nice job hitting the heavy notes and making music that has a lot of rhythm to it, particularly on "Smoke Ya Later" and "Passing The Pencil Test". As far as the drumming being slow and boring, I don't really know where that came from. Unless the previous reviewer was talking about the drum patterns during the breakdowns (which are designed to be slow) I don't see how someone could arrive at that conclusion. And as for the vocals, they're typical of the metalcore genre. Vincent doesn't try to do too much, as he mostly concentrates on keeping his vocals as intense as the music. If you're looking for singers who "carry tunes", sing melodically or something of that nature, you probably aren't going to get into TAS to begin with. His lyrics however are particularly thought provoking and inventive, when so much of the hardcore scene is concentrated on love and other crap. It's nice to hear someone with some political and religious views whose not afraid to talk about it.
The only downside to "3750" (and unfortunately it's a fairly big one) is that it is entirely too short. In fact if you take away the two interludes ("Extreme Wrath of the Jhiaxus" and "Halcyon") and the short introduction track ("Carbomb" which isn't really a song anyway, just a big breakdown) then what you're left with is six new songs, or more or less a new EP. If they would have just dropped those three and marketed this as an EP, it would have worked a lot better. However since this is made out to be a full length, somehow I can't help but feel short changed. Granted it's not that expensive, and the band as well as their label could use the support (preferably the band, so buy the record from them at a show), it still just feels like they were trying to get a record out and maybe it wasn't completely done.
"3750" isn't going to change your mind about metalcore if you already hate it. It's also not going to bring you anything amazingly new as far as the genre is concerned. However what it will give you is 29 minutes of solid listening, especially if you love metal in the vein of Cannae or Innovocation of Nehek. Despite what some have said, The Acacia Strain is not a band that should be written off easily. Yea they aren't your typical Pantera metal or whatever (please stop this comparison, it isn't even remotely close), but they know how to play heavy music, and that's all that really counts. The guitars shred, the vocals are heavy, and the lyrics are better than most of the trendy metal/hardcore bands right now who are writing emo heartbreakers. While it is short, "3750" definitely merits a listen. People shouldn't get stuck on some typical view of metal, and should try to give other forms of heavy music the respect they deserve. This is the record to do that with.
please, no headbanging, pantera loving, white trash allowed..........2005-07-04
If all you want to do is complain on how there is a different scene than white trash rock, then you should probably do all of us a favor and kill yourself. If you have ever seen this band live and didnt want to move at all, then you deserve to be at a Backstreet boys concert with the guy who proclaims "I'll go in there wearing a Pantera shirt and knock you into next Tuesday." If that isnt enough of an embarassing statement as it is, then i dont know what would be. Maybe stating that "The guitar players resort to making racket as opposed to writing anything memorable" would be enough to embarass yourself. bottom line, for people with closed minds, you dont need to write any kind of review that can be seen by more people than yourself. This cd is amazing if it is your flavor, bottom line.
wow...three guitarists...so?.......2005-06-29
I don't hate this album, but I really don't like it...(...)
I mean...except being heavy, they don't bring something new to the scene....
Three guitarist+generic hardcore = predictible music and...nothing new...
The funniest thing is the publicity they get with this aspect of the lineup "OMG, three guitars! they're probably soooo brutal" or "this three guitar band is going to change your perception of the hardcore scene" and blahblah...
A big deception compared to their previous work...2 stars because i'm feeling great today...
One of my favourite local bands ever.......2005-06-19
Ok, not bashing don or anything, but TECHNICALLY The Acacia Strain origonated from Springfield, Massachusetts, but it's close enough to CT. My friends brother has played in a band with every member of the current band except the third guitarist, but dang, these guys are really something in concert. They're like, a kid with ADHD high on pixy stix and caffine pills. And their first album ... And Life Is Very Long blows this one out of the water, it captures their sound much better.
The three guitarists is probably one of the most innovative and unseen setups nowadays. And to whoever was saying their guitar is too loud and it drowns out the drum and what not, go to one of their concerts, cause it really doesn't. But, sadly, their third guitarist quit recently, so they're back to two.
Sun Posion and Skin Cancer is definatelly one of the best track on the CD. The begining is just beastly. The slide is just hinting at whats to come, then it breaks into a long series of complex guitar playing.
I like halcyon because i think it's nice to have a break from thrashing about, yet still have it be a good song.
Drawn and quartered is one of their more technical songs. The guitar is really cool, fast, and it's constantly changing rythym. The whole song has odd beats and starts and ends, this song is a great song on the technical side.

Album Description
DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid has teamed up with Dave Lombardo (drummer for Slayer) to see what one of the world's best DJs could do with beats supplied by the best thrash metal drummer of all time. Added to the mix are the talents of Chuck D from Public Enemy and legendary Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid. To bring it all together, Meat Beat Manifesto co-produced "Drums of Death" along with DJ Spooky.

Public Enemy #1 + Slayer + Spooky = Love.......2007-03-13
Drums of Death featuring Dave Lombardo (of Slayer) and Chuck D (of Public Enemy) is a collaborative effort to which I had never thought could exist. However when you listen to the full CD, you will see how it does indeed work so well. The remix of (one of my personally favorite P.E. tunes) B-Side was done so well, it blew me away. There are Lots of recorded Loops and samples of Dave Lombardo's drumming, that Spooky uses to beat juggle and use for fills in other tunes. Lombardo is featured in full on other tunes on this album, as well. Chuck D of Public Enemy fame does a very classy job at doing his MC mastery on several tunes on this FULL length album. It reminds me of the full efforts that public enemy put into the collaborative work that they did with Anthrax in the '80s. Most importantly, do not judge this album by the posted clips on the page listing. The tunes on the album did not seem at all as if they were the same songs, that the clips reflect. I'm a music lover, a DJ, and a sentimentalist. I give this album an A+. Well done Spooky.
Drums of What?.......2006-06-03
DJ Spooky, whose work has reached prolific proportions and Dave Lombardo, the drummer for Slayer, collab on this album, but it really just doesn't hit the sweet spot. Each of these guys has a darker power that could've worked more aptly towards the suggestive title of the album, Drums of Death. It's funny to me that this album is even called Drums of Death. I was seriously expecting a sonic assualt to come blasting from my speakers. Instead, I found myself laughing and perplexed at the odd (as in, not-so-good) variations of beats I heard.
DJ Spooky's style and perspective is hit and miss sometimes- none the less, moments of brilliance consistently emerge throughout much of his work...just not this work. This album is plainly and unfortunately one of the obvious exceptions to his skill-fullness. For the dope legos try Riddim Warfare and Under the Influence.
strong mixes .......2005-07-11
Dj Spooky`s new album, Drums of Death, is packed full of high-energy remixes and original tracks. This all-star collaboration brings together elements of Heavy Metal, Hip Hop and Electronica, creating a powerful new sound.
Great job musically! I would suggest this album to anyone who is into fusion and hybrid music, although it might be a bit much for the mainstream listener.
Excellent New Music.......2005-06-30
This project is brilliant. DJ Spooky again bridges a gap between diverse musical genres to create a fresh and unique sound that pounds nicely through any speakers. Drums of Death plays so nicely, in fact, that it is easy to underestimate the difficulty of the mix while enjoying the flow, but that is the beauty of Spooky's musicianship. An all around excellent album.
Mixed Bag of good stuff.......2005-06-30
There's definitely a lot going on here, but if expectations of what a DJ "should" produce are dropped and the music judged on its merits, this has a lot to offer.

It's unclear why this program works so well, but it does. It may be because all three composers resolutely affirmed the virtues of tonality at a time when it was terribly out of fashion, though each did it in his own way. Barber was a genuine neo-Romantic before we had the term to describe him, so his heartfelt and emotional music was simply called "backward looking" while he was alive. Vaughan Williams and Bartók were both authorities on folk song who used the "uncouth vocal utterance of the people" to forge fresh and contemporary musical styles. Robert Shaw, one of the great choral music conductors of all time, plays all three works with a near ideal combination of clarity and intensity, and, of course, the chorus is sensational. --David Hurwitz

Lesser-known Choral Masterpieces.......2005-12-13
A disk of lesser-known choral/orchestral works by great masters of composition are always a welcome addition, and this CD doesn't fail, perhaps giving these works new life and hopefully a new future of performances.
The Danish-born theologian Soren Kierkegaard and his prayers from various writings are the subject of Samuel Barber's Prayers of Kierkegaard. The prayers are very personal, having to do with redemption and God's love, a keen insight to existentialism, and Barber's music expresses it well. While a unified whole, the 15+ minute work is divided into four separate prayers, each a style and a setting different from one another. Barber lets the listener know this is religious music by setting the opening text in chanting men's voices in an old church mode. But when the orchestra comes in, a 20th century declamatory statement changes the mood. Barber again looks to the past with simple contrapuntal choral writings. The second prayer is a supplicatory soprano solo sung by Carmen Pelton. A 20th century chanting chorus, reminiscent of thick Russian orthodox music opens the third prayer. Barber again brings back contrapuntalism and a great dissonant melody eventually dividing into two choruses. The final prayer begins with a wild instrumental modal dance section, and the end brings back the simple chant-like feel of the beginning, and the final, modern chorale ending with a positive outlook. Scored for orchestra, soprano, alto, and tenor soloists, and chorus, Barber's unique, and often intimate compositional styles, shine through here. The motives used throughout are enjoyable, the music creates great drama, and the work is quite inspired. It is very much spiritual and artistically pleasing.
Bartok's Cantata Profana is a different matter. It tells the story of nine sons who were taught nothing but to wander the forest and hunt stags. One day they wander too far into the enchanted part of the forest, only to be turned into stags themselves. Bartok sets this 20 minute work in three parts. The first showcases the double, sometimes antiphonal, chorus in thick imitation and dissonance. The chorus explains the back-story and relays the wandering in the forest, including a rather frenzied rhythmical jaunt. The second section is a feature for tenor and bass soloists, the tenor being the best-loved brother turned stag, and the bass being the father who went wandering looking for them. The father pleads with them, but as stags, they can't go home to their weeping mother. The short third section brings back themes and texts from the first and the second with tenor soloist exclamation. This music is interesting, not as folk-like as I expected, very modern sounding with dissonance leading the tonality. The soloists are required to sing some extreme ranges for the angst of the text and the chorus parts are difficult as well. The demonic chanting in the third section show the unusual harmonies and subject matter, not to mention musical virtuosity, of this very unusual, yet interesting choral work.
Unfortunately, Walt Whitman's poems about war and Vaughan Williams' music of the same vein, will probably never have little meaning for the public. The six movement Dona Nobis Pacem is the most stirring work on this disk, with various perspectives of war; texts by Walt Whitman primarily, some biblical texts, and an impassioned British speech. The Agnus Dei states the suffering and sacrifice of Christ, but ends with grant us peace. Beat! Beat the Drums! is a bombastic march about how war affects all citizens, not just those who fight. Reconciliation is a lush and somewhat haunting song on the tides of war, in a personal perspective. The Dirge for Two Veterans is a procession which builds to a great climax and dies away; the text visualizing a community honoring the passing of two local veterans. The Angel of Death and O Man Greatly Beloved is a magnum opus of contrasting moods, which erupts into a paean of "Glory to God in the Highest, and peace and goodwill to man". Even today, well after WWII when the music was written, certainly well after Walt Whitman's Civil War era's words, these performances of Dona Nobis Pacem is so personal, not a dry eye leaves the concert hall. The disk presents a moving and electrifying performance.
All the works on this disk, especially with the wide range of styles, is performed flawlessly. As always, Robert Shaw's choruses have clean and crisp diction, with good vocal technique. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra gives these works a Romantic fullness needed, and the soloists are fine as well. While together, the program seems odd, the works in themselves deserve more popularity. A nice addition to the choral/orchestral library.
Samuel Barber's "Prayers of Kierkegaard", Shaw.......2005-09-25
This recording track seems to be lower in quality than most of Shaw's. Both the recording and the chorale singing is of lesser quality than the other selections and most of Shaw's works.
However, I can still recommend this CD overall.
Excellent Chorale Pieces Performed Impeccably.......2005-06-26
Three composers, who don't seem to have a lot in common, are on display here, and yet the cumulative effect is quite stirring thanks to the late Robert Shaw, as he masterfully leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in this splendid 1998 recording. Samuel Barber's "Prayers of Kierkegaard" is a powerful chorale work that is almost cinematic in its dramatic effect. Commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation during WWII, the composer did not complete the work until 1954. The piece is in the form of a single-movement cantata, of four prayers by the Danish theologian Søren Kierkegaard. Soprano Carmen Pelton has a lovely solo on "Lord Jesus Christ, Who suffered all life long" and joins the chorus for the haunting "Father in Heaven, well we know that it is Thou".
Béla Bartók's "Cantata profana" ("The Nine Enchanted Songs") possesses strong rhythmic vitality in this arrangement, especially the harp glissandos implying supernatural forces at work, and is given a fine reading by tenor Richard Clement and baritone Nathan Gunn providing superb vocal turns as son and father, respectively, in the middle section. The most affecting set is the last, Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Dona nobis pacem", which was composed in the mid-1930's as a warning of the threat of war in Europe. His sources were diverse - the poetry of Walt Whitman, the Bible, the Latin Mass, and from a speech made in the British House of Commons during the Crimean War in the 1850s by John Bright - but the sound is consistently mesmerizing. Pelton particularly shines on "Agnus dei", and the concluding "O man greatly beloved" is awe-inspiring. However, the most impressive passage is the "Dirge for Two Veterans", which effortlessly goes from patriotic wartime fervor to mournful prayer. This is a clean recording with especially impressive singing.
Terrible Recording of the Barber.......2002-01-10
I will disagree with the other reviewers here. The Barber is a wonderful piece, dreadfully and lifelessly performed here. The chorus has no emotion. The recording is unfocused...the strings sound absolutely amateurish throughout. Schenck's work on Koch is much superior, even though rough at the edges; it bristles with electricity, and the soprano is just perfect for the second section.
Evocation of the Spirit (2).......2001-02-25
Following the wonderful Evocation of the Spirit CD (Gorecki, Part, Martin, Barber and Shoenberg) this is an ideal follow up. The twentieth century really did produce some wonderful choral music and although the Barber and Bartok here are not totally consistent, the Vaughan-Williams is great.

Finally, a Follow-up to "To Ride...".......2001-11-14
I have been waiting since "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth," for an album from Entombed that one can hold on the same level of death & roll mastery. This album is it! Every song is a testament to Entombeds ability to just rock you out of your seat and then some. I ve been a fan since Clandestine, and at no time since has Entombed sounded more focused in their aggression. You cant help but feel sorry for the guitars and drums that have to take the beating of this album. It explodes out the gate with the riff heavy "Chief Rebel Angel," and proceeds to beat you into a coma. Others that stand out on this album are "Out of Heaven," (my favorite) "Year One Now," "When It Hits Home," and "Mental Twin." Not a bad song on the album! A must buy for any entombed fan that thought "Same Difference" was a hunk of (...)!
Rise the morning star.......2001-11-12
They're back. After the good step-back to death metal of Uprising, the Entombed release another great about. Maybe you would have to listen Morning star several times, but i'm sure it will like you everytime more. Well, this is not Clandestine or Leth Hand path volume 2, but it's just death metal in the year 2001. So if u like this genre, buy it with no remorse.

Whats the big deal?.......2007-07-01
New listeners who listen to Entombed call this a return to form. Long time fans like myself see this as another line of junk albums from a once great band. Clandestine and Left Hand Path, both godly albums, are slowly being suffocated by releases like this and Wolverine Blues, among other garbage Entombed has released for the past 15 years.
Stuff like this leaves me with no faith for the much hyped Serpent Saints. Oh well, Im going to go listen to Dismember's latest album, The God that Never Was.
Completely Original.......2005-03-13
I love this album it is like some where between Sabbath and death metal. I myself am a huge fan of the Death and Roll style that emtombed have created. I am also a fan of the old school death metal sound of the early entombed albums and think most of the fans of that era entombed are to hard on entombed for progressing beyond there earlier work. I sorry that there not Cannibal Corpse or Some other tire ass Death Metal band making the same album 15 times. In the case of Entombed musical growth is a good thing
Solid Effort from the boys from Sweden.......2004-10-24
This band got me into Swedish Death and made me a lifelong fan. This disc saw them delve into more straight forward metal than their addictive Death&Roll. It is no Uprising, but it is a good metal disc in its own right.
Trying too hard..........2003-08-29
The production is too polished here making the album sound more 'metal' but the songs are too redundant and generic. Sounds like Slayer at an all time low. Not much melodic swede-metal riffs here that make it an Entombed album. Starjvind's drumming is straight forward but rather uninteresting which is in my book rather dissappointing; lots of double but nothing much else. Buy THE HAUNTED 'ONE KILL WONDER' instead. That album is what Morning Star should have been.
Trying too hard..........2003-08-29
That is what I think of this album. It sounds like a really bad slayer rip off. And it doesn't seem like it bears any likeness to thier original swede-metal sound that is still existant on Uprising. Alot of people will enjoy the polished sound of the production here but really it doesn't suit this album because the songs are so redundant and generic by this band's standards. Because the sound is so clean here it makes the music not seem so heavy. Morning Star does offer a more 'metal' sound of material here than their other most recent albums (Same Difference, Uprising.) Still, this is the worst Entombed album I've heard. I suggest you buy THE HAUNTED 'ONE KILL WONDER' or even one of the new SLAYER albums ... instead of this uninspired [garbage].
