Amazon.com's Best of 1999
The much-anticipated return of Underworld after 1996's landmark recording Second Toughest in the Infants, Beaucoup Fish is infused with subtle, lean rhythms, memorable hooks, and a youthful, sensuous energy. Alternately sinister and sweet, the endless DJ creativity on display is an ecstatic revelation. --Matthew Cooke

Amazon.com
A stunning album of smart, dance-pop craft, Beaucoup Fish blends stomping beats and meandering, binary dream worlds into a cohesive and heavenly revelation. It's another work filled with Karl Hyde's singsong talk-vocals ("Push Downstairs") floating over DJ Darren Emerson's sinewy, house-style rave-ups ("King of Snake"), a sound that has distinguished them since 1993's Dubnobasswithmyheadman. On Beaucoup Fish, however, that sound slips around tracks that do more than patiently await the next thick coat of rhythm, building simple songs into a digitized, epic whole. There are eruptions of ecstatic melody on songs such as "Jumbo," while jerky dance tracks such as "Bruce Lee" open whole new avenues for bursting layers of rhythmic ambience. Underworld are doomed to be haunted forever by "Born Slippy" (popularized via the Trainspotting soundtrack), the world's first international rave anthem, yet Beaucoup Fish goes well beyond such timely phenomena, and works instead to free electronic music from its computer-age constraints. --Matthew Cooke

It took a while to grow on me because it may be a little more unexpectedly deep than some of their previous work. I love the samples especially the one in king of snake where the Japanese guy is talking about snake fighting. Underworld have a standard formula that they employ here, hard driving techno and background synth wash with the funky lyrics splayed within, but here they change up their beat style a little, sometimes sounding like German hardcore back in the early nineties. The lyrics here seem to have more passion and emotion than the previous work also.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album, Great Band.......2006-10-12

Underworld's follow-up to "Second Toughest in the Enfants" clearly proves yet again their artistry. Buy this album now.

5 out of 5 stars To sum up..........2006-05-18

Most of these reviewers are too enamoured with themselves, their own descriptive prowess and their ability to dance about architecture, so I'll sum it up for you. This is one of the best alblums of the 90s. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

5 out of 5 stars YOUR UNBELIEVABLE!!!.......2005-11-08

You like winjer but you dont like MOANER!!! Maybe im thinking of the Batman and Robin version but Moaner is amazing its probably one of their more fast songs but so kool. The angry voice is so kool it puts you in a complete trance makes your spine shiver. I love how it sounds like hes describing something going on its just phenomanal. not to mention the sweetness of the bass in the song. Winjer to me doesnt do it especially when u got bruce lee, kittens, jumbo, push upstairs, and cups on the same alblum. I love that noise in jumbo that sounds like someone bitting into an apple or a flash going off its so creepy. And bruce lee is just way different and super kool.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2005-08-22

From the first time i heard Jumbos pulsing baseline, i was hooked on Beaucoup fish. I will say with utmost comfidence that this is underworlds best album over Dubnobass and Second Toughest.Songs such as Cups, Jumbo, King of Snake, Bruce Lee and Push Upstairs still fascinate me as i marvel at the expert progression and song crafting that Emerson and crew unleashed with this album. I highly reccomend this to all lovers of electronic music and i can assure you there is no way you can be unsatisfied with this masterpiece.

    5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2005-08-20

When any band manages the rare task of topping their first album with their second, the third is almost always savaged by critics, and sometimes the fans. This happened to a degree with Beaucoup Fish. True, the album did have a bunch of singles on it, but that doesn't mean selling out. But now that another album has been put out since then, and another's supposed to be on the way soon, this album should be reappraised. Cups starts things off with a great relaxed discolike feel, with little bits constantly going on in the background. Push Upstairs is a weird little stomping song, and in hindsight, a strange choice for a first single. It's got a beat, but you can't really dance to it, just jump. Jumbo is a quieter song, and has a great happy feel to it. Highly recommended for driving to at sunset or sunrise. Next is Shudder/King of Snake. Shudder's a 45-second guitar riff that's been messed with, and King of Snake is a brilliant dance song, complete with some of the best lyrics they've ever had (you have absolutely no idea what you're singing along with, but you know every lyric by the 3rd listen; it's that good). Winjer calms things down a bit to a more relaxed tempo (oh, and has nothing to do with the winjer remix of Cowgirl). Skym is this albums's Tongue, stopping things completely, to give a breather. Bruce Lee was a huge shock at the time. With a beat resembling "We Will Rock You", and vocalizing similar to hip-hop, this was nothing like an Underworld song. Luckily, it's very good, and shows that when an artist has actual talent, experimenting can be a great thing. Kittens is an instrumental storming number, which caused inevitable Rowla comparisons, even though the two songs are nothing alike. Push Downstairs takes the Push Upstairs lyrics and puts them over a very downtempo beat. I like this version better, but many may differ. Something Like a Mama has a quiet breakbeat pattern to it, and while not bad, is the weakest song here. Last is Moaner, which is as it appears on the Batman and Robin soundtrack, only without the 3-minute ambient outro. It's a great fast and loud track, and is a great way to end this album. I would highly recommend this one to people who have already heard Underworld and want to know more, but beginners should probably go with one of the first two.

2 out of 5 stars This edition isn't really worth it........2005-06-02

As happens with many albums, a version of an album is released for the Japanese with bonus material (apparently shipping costs are high as they don't like to import foreign music, so the bands compensate their fans there by offsetting the extra cost with extra songs). Here, the Beaucoup Fish album was released with a bonus CD of mixes. I won't review the main album here as it has been reviewed already. The bonus tracks a mixed bag, though. The mix of Cups is a nice disco-inflected remix. The mix of Bruce Lee, has been given a slowed-out robotic beat that work wells. But the mix of King of Snake, is like every other Dave Clarke mix I've ever heard: take out the drums, and add a vague build-up to the track that never actually goes anywhere( of course, if you like Dave Clarke, then this mix would appeal to you). The mix of Jumbo is not much different from the original, just with the main melody stuttered a bit. These four are also available on the singles box set for much cheaper. The only real reason to buy this then, is the Narcotic Haze Dub of Push Upstairs, which is actually just an instrumental of the Blue Plastic People mix on the singles box set, but doesn't appear anywhere else but here. The track itself is good enough even without the lyrics, but spending import prices just for one instrumental version of a track easily found elsewhere isn't really worth it. Get the album and the box set (doing so gets you more tracks, and would actually be cheaper, as this version isn't readily available anymore). But if you're a completionist, it's got one track you don't have on it.

        5 out of 5 stars don't get this edition.......2000-07-28

don't waste your money on this special edition cause the bonus CD is bad with the exception of the last track. Get the regular US release.

5 out of 5 stars Very deep transient sounds.......2000-03-16

This is one of the best techno-ambient albums I've got and I've got lots. It has a gentle and melodic beat. Overlaid with great samples and melodies. Each listen reveals more intricate sounds so it gets better with age.
