About the Artist
Serial Records is known as one of the pioneering labels of the "French Touch" sound. Started in 1997, Serial has released over 250 tracks and remixes that have defined the sound of Paris. DJ Rork (from the Soldiers of Twilight) has crafted a late night mix that includes some of Serial's biggest songs alongside 7 new and exclusive tracks just for Afterdark Paris. DJ Gilb'r and Versatile Records - From cutting his teeth as a hip-hop DJ to helping create the super-cool sound of Radio Nova, France's leading eclectic radio show, DJ Gilb'r has played a major role in defining Paris' burgeoning underground scene since the early nineties. Gilb'r launched his Versatile imprint in 1996 with the release of "Disco Cubizm" by I:Cube that featured one of Daft Punk's very first remixes; needless to say it went on to be a massive underground hit and Gilb'r has never looked back. Since then, Versatile has defined itself by not sticking to a specific sound but rather by adopting a varied cast of talented musicians to build upon a label ethos that is dedicated to the full spectrum of possibilities offered by electronic music. Versatile is home to such producers as I:Cube, Joakim, Phil Asher, Chateau Flight (I:Cube & Gilb'r) and Julien Jabre while Gilb'r/Chateau Flight have been called in to add their remix touch to the likes of Air, Bebel Gilberto, Manu Dibango and Serge Gainsbourg. When we decided to come to Paris for the next volume in the Afterdark series, there was no question that Gilb'r had to be involved somehow. His dedication to pushing the sound of dance music futher and further into new, uncharted territory is an example that all record labels should adhere to and his mix included here is a perfect selection to define that late night, nocturnal, Afterdark sound of Paris.

Product Description
The Afterdark house journey continues here. Enter Paris: all things chic and sexy. Although geographically distant from Afterdark's San Francisco excursion, both cities' musical au courant places them but a few beats apart. The Parisian sound is widely known for high profile acts like Daft Punk and Air or the filtered disco, hands-in-the-air dancefloor hedonism of the mid Nineties, but there's another side to Paris—an active hive of sonic tenacity full of fresh and energetic sounds that has bred an eclectic roster of late-night legends. From St. Germain's live electronic jazz mutations, to house icons Dimitri from Paris, Gregory and DJ Deep, to the fashionable, click house sounds of I:Cube (one half of Chateau Flight) or techno innovator Laurent Garnier—who literally changed the face of the genre--Paris is standing tall, with an identity all its own amid a fickle scene of underground credibility.

The cross-pollination of Afro-beat-tinged lounge, funk and soul is what has evolved most in Paris and also gives the scene an enormous level of authority. In-the-know labels like Faya Combo and Yellow Productions along with world-renowned clubs like Respect, Rex Club and La Palace have ensured that Paris' sultry sounds have reverberated across the world's urban landscape. You can hardly mention Paris without stating the culturally obvious: they have a passion for everything beautiful. This adoration has infiltrated their sound, style and after-hour landscape with a sexiness that defies genre and speaks to all. Which is why we chose Serial Records and Versatile Records of the city of Paris to celebrate this love for house music and everything sexy and passionate it brings out of us. These imprints' sounds are epitomized by artists like Soldiers Of Twilight, Demon Ritchie, Rork (Serial); and I:Cube and Gilb'r (Versatile). Not since Dimitri played host to a few provocative Playboy Mansion compilations has French citizenship been more alluring. I know where I'll be playing this, but it's a private affair.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars SOULFULL house!.......2006-07-10

if you are looking for a great, silky smooth house cd FULL OF SOUL, then this is it! very mellow, yet great to dance to in a mature environment...i am a lunge DJ, and I refer to this cd any times between sets....these are two very well known DJs internationally, and two of paris' finest...some of the other discs in the afterdark collection are much more upbeat, but this set is the perfect blend of smooth r&b and full soulful flavor...

4 out of 5 stars Deep Jazzy House.......2006-03-09

Don't listen to the negative reviews, they are probably written by people who simply don't like the sound that is on this CD and were probably looking for a whole CD by I:Cube.

This double CD has some gems on it. I own all the afterdark cd's and I put this one right at the top next to the San Francisco one. If your a fan of deep house and like a jazzy flavor to it, check this CD out.

4 out of 5 stars Paris.......2005-09-05

This is a more downtempo collection of house with inspiration coming from R&B and soul. It's still very soulful house though. The first disc was mixed by DJ Rork and the second by DJ Gilb'r. Not as good as Chicago and San Fransisco (which are awesome) but this one is still worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Deep House Flava.......2005-08-15

I personally don't know what CD these 4 other people were listening to, but I think this CD is nice...real nice! I also purchased Afterdark-Chicago and I personally still think this one is better. This CD has a nice, smooth R&B funk downtempo feel to it that suits my listening taste. For everyone else who are contemplating to buy this CD, don't listen to the other reviews from the haters who don't quite understand the meaning of deep house...this CD is a must have for those who are into a more relaxed, smoother groove.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!.......2005-08-11

Save your money for another CD...or in this case, TWO CDs that BOTH unfortunately are not even worth the CDs they are burned on to!

If you like "Adore" by I:Cube (the whole reason I wasted my money on this CD set), you can find that track on the "Best of Hotel Costes" along with quite a few other tunes that are just as creative and unique...

Contrast this to "Afterdark: Paris" which is just plain boring and so NOT creative that you may just yank it out of your CD player before you get to the best track which is unfortunately at the END of the 2nd disc...

The best liquid lounge compilation I have discovered thus far:

"Sub Zero: The Essential Chill Out Collection"

Pass on "Afterdark: Paris" and save your hard earned cash for "Sub Zero" instead...you will be a much happier camper!
