When Missy Elliott wants to pretend that she's a one-woman Holland/Dozier/Holland writing and producing hits for the Supremes, she hooks up with 702, the female R&B trio named after the area code for their hometown of Las Vegas. Elliott crafted four songs for 702's 1996 debut, No Doubt, including the hit "Steelo." For this overdue follow-up, Elliott has come up with two more, including the Top 10 pop smash, "Where My Girls At." The single boasts an irresistible push-and-pull rhythm that intersects cleverly with the sing-along chorus, and 702 gives this warning to would-be man stealers a youthful vulnerability that the tougher Elliott could never have managed herself. Elliott's two tracks are the highlights, but Kameelah Williams and sisters Irish and Lemisha Grinstead have made a successful transition from high-school-age prodigies to college-age pros. They don't have overpowering voices, but do display a sure sense of pitch, a surer sense of rhythm, and a seductive sweetness on the catchy new-jack tunes created for them by Whitney Houston cohorts Soulshock and Karlin, Dru Hill's Warren "Smiley" Campbell, and Rick "Dutch" Cousin of Ice Cube fame. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars When marketing hasn't supported real talent..........2006-09-22

Every time that i listen "Steelo", i reminisce when i've bought this album. It was just released, and when i listened that song into my music store i quickly decided that it was already a good reason to buy the whole album! This cd was really enjoyable, and the girls showed their good vocal skills in many tracks. I loved especially "Get It Together", a great ballad produced by Donell Jones.

In that period, 702 used to collaborate with Missy Elliott...after "Steelo", i wish to remember also "Beep Me 911" (from Missy's debut album) and the related video...one of the more original and funny videos that i've seen in the last decade.

I'm been truly sorry for the recent group breakup. Honestly, i don't understand why Meelah Williams hasn't still had the opportunity to pursue a solo career, because her voice is really one of the best of the modern R&B scene.

4 out of 5 stars Some Grade A Tracks Here.......2006-04-06

I remember chillin' to 'Steelo' back in the day and so I was excited to get my hands on this album again. Tracks like 'Not Gonna' 'All I Want' and 'Get Down Like Dat' show the fun side of these girls, while slowed down tracks like 'Get it Together' really showcase their singing talents and prove sutible ballads for the ears. 'Steelo' is still a favorite, but the shines on it's own as a great R&B album of the 90's.

5 out of 5 stars No Doubt.......2005-05-17

I remember this album when I was in the 4th grade. This album is blazing and the songs are unique and stylish. This album has a sound that is described as sleek, hot and funky. This album effortlessly blend the rhymes and sounds of Gospel,Hip-Hop,Jazz and Blues. They got their name from a Las Vegas zip code. The girls sing with a vocal maturity far beyond their youthfulness. This album has been certified Gold. Remember, this was 1996-1997.
I Love This CD.

4 out of 5 stars 702..=) Love Em.......2005-02-15

I give this cd four stars cause its a couple of tracks I do not like but overall the album is good..I've always loved these girls & I wish they would come back THEY ARE MOS DEF one of the best girl R & B groups who really never got any credit for their music support this album

5 out of 5 stars WOAH!!!!! this girls are great...........2004-11-09

702 are one of my favourite r&b groups of all time... these girls are tight to def... i loved them when i first saw them in 'steelo' w/ missy elliot... that girl can produce a song... 'steelo' was my favourite song at that time... the beat was crazy and i flipped when missy was on it because i loved missy at the time....

my favourite song on the entire album is 'all i want' which is also on the GOOD BURGER SDTK (which i have as well)... this song is great and the girls sound great....

'get it together' was the breakup song in middle school... when a couple breaks up we used to sing that song when they would walk in the hallways (well you all had to be there)...

anyways, 'no doubt' is another hot joint on the album as well...

all three 702 albums (NO DOUBT, 702, and STAR) are some of the best works in my cd collection, especially STAR which is a constant in my car.... too bad the girls are broken up...

get this album to start or finish your r&b collection no disappointments whatsoever....

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-09-04

I happened to receive this CD in the mail by accident the year it came out, and decided to take a listen to it. Ever since then, it has become one of my favorite albums. The songs on here can relate to almost any female going through those situations. It helps when you can isten to a song infinite amounts of times, and still not get tired of it, because that's exactly what I do with this album, to basically every song.

You'll Just Never Know can bring tears to your eyes, while Never gives a strong standpoint. Majority of these songs could have been singles, and it is worth the buy.

5 out of 5 stars 702's Self-Titled Album.......2005-05-17

I remember this album when I was 12. I love this album and played it loud. It is an album with a fresh sound. This album showcases the trio's personalitites and their powerful vocal abilities, but their coming-of-age. 702 deals with being in love, being out of love, and wanting love back. In addition to developing personally and musically, the ladies also gotten more involved with the business and the artistic dealings of their career. This album has been certified Platinum. Remember, this was 1999.

I listened to this album over my grandparents' home. This album has hot beats and great vocal stylings. 702 has made one hell of a contemporary R&B album like this. Don't compare these girls to TLC and Destiny's Child with this album. I was thrilled and excited to get this CD. Listen before you judge.

5 out of 5 stars They Did It Again.......2005-02-15

I personally love this cd better then their 1st one the 1st one was good too but on their 2nd album they & you can tell if you listen to this album..I love 702 all I can say is get this cd too..=)

5 out of 5 stars 702 is 4-EVER!!!!.......2004-11-09

I love 702... period... these girls can sang and keep a party happening... they are one of my favourite r&b acts of all time. too bad they broke up because their labels did not know which direction to take the group.... i guess Ms. Beyonce is taking the world by storm so much that 702's record label could not promote them better....

their slef titled album 702 is great work.... the infectious #1 first single 'where my girls at?' produced by missy is hot. it still is the jam till this date... their second single "you dont know' is even better. their harmonies are just tight as ever...'seven', 'finally' are hot joints too...

the interludes are brilliant... they shoudl have just added them up to make a song....

this whole album is tight to def... but their last effort STAR is their best work yet...if you are a 702 fan and like good r&b pop songs then get this album...

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Damn Good!!!.......2004-10-19

702 came in and brought the noise with their debut album No Doubt. After such a strong debut, many people were left wondering if they would succumb to the sophomore jinx. And after waiting for three years many fans figured that 702 was just a one-album wonder.

Nothing could have been further from the truth. 702 knew they had to come harder the second time around, and that they did. This album was easily one of 1999's acclaimed and highly-anticipated albums.

The first single, "Where My Girls At" left an indelible mark in the world. This is probably the ultimate female anthem, and it was used as an anthem for the WNBA's inaugural season. This song is extremely catchy, for I have heard even the hardest of thugs bumping this in their cars. And it's no surprise; Missy Elliott came hard with this one and 70s definitely delivered well. "Make Time" easily is one of my favorite songs on this album. The beat just grabs you and doesn't let you go until it wants you to! And Kameelah shines. "What More Can He Do" is a nice inspirational song that is quite catchy with its beat and lyrics. It snuck up on me, for I just knew it was a "secular" song. lol. "Finally" also has that inspirational flavor and sounds really nice.

The slower songs really work here. "You'll Just Never Know" sounds so sweet and innocent and all melancholy and depressing at the same time. The vocals here really standout. Also worth mentioning is the song "Don't Go Breaking My Heart". Kameelah sounds as if she really went through it while recording this song, and the strings in the background go along beautifully.

I love the individual interludes (something Destiny's Child did as well on Survivor), and I wish that all of them had come together to fit some sort of song because I know that song would have been excellent. But, the interludes are all nice by themselves.

I have a couple of problems with this album. "Tell Your Girl" sounds like something that Total left off of their Kima, Keisha, and Pam album. I tried to like the song, but it reminded me too much of Total. Also, "Seven" is just too hard for me. Something just went wrong in that song and it just did not do it for me at all. "Will You Be OK" should have been a lot better than it was. The lyrics are fine, but the vocals sound boring and uninspiring.

702 definitely made a fan in me with this album. They grew up in age, attitude, vocal ability, and beauty, but don't give you all the adult lyrics that some groups try so hard to put out nowadays. Hopefully they can borrow from 702's formula...pure, sweet, innocent R&B with a hip-hop edge.

3 out of 5 stars Star.......2006-04-30

As a fan of this trio, I bought this disc for the one stand-out track, I STILL LOVE YOU. I heard it on the radio one day and fell in love with the song, I instantly recognized it as a Neptunes track and incorrectly thought that they had worked on more than 2 tracks with 702.

When I initially listened to the entire disc, it seemed and still seems disjointed to me because of the number of different producers they used - there is no cohesive sound to the album. I guess they figured it'd be the group's last disc so they went for the gusto but it left them with an album of mostly filler tracks. If they had released I STILL LOVE YOU first instead of STAR, they might have stirred up enough buyer interest to make this album go gold.

The positives about this group is the fact that Meelah was always the lead singer which gave them a distinctive sound much like Destiny's Child. Their harmonies and background vocals are always on point as well which makes even the filler tracks slightly interesting to listen to.

The other tracks that I really liked were those produced by the Kollective: PLACES & CERTIFIED - both have a really pretty live instrumentation sound. STRINGING ME ALONG, BETTER DAYS, NO WAY & BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH are also enjoyable to me - they don't stand out in the same way I STILL LOVE YOU does but again, 702's harmonies are excellent on each of those tracks. Sadly, I'd only recommend that die-hard fans get this entire disc and others try to get the single of I STILL LOVE YOU since that's really the best song on the entire disc.

5 out of 5 stars My shining stars have faded.......2006-03-22

To bad 702 aren't togather anymore, this is there last album and it's very much one of there best records ever.i can listen to every track on this cd all the way throw.I love all the songs but my most favorite tracks are "feelings" and "trouble" i love the beats to those tracks.702 needs get back togather..this is there best cd..they left an album with plently of tracks and good beats.

4 out of 5 stars This Album Is Great.......2006-01-09

I just bought this CD(nearly 3 years after its release date) because I was kinda weary of it after reading most of the reviews on this site. But Im really glad I did because this album is great. Althought I havent listened to all of the songs in there entirety, tracks "Blah Blah Blah Blah", "Feeling", "Places", "Betcha She" and "Come and Knock on My Door" really standout.

I can not stop listening to "I still Love You"...that song is hella tight. Sometimes I just drive around LA at night and listen to it over and over again. Its perfect.

The only negatives I could point out with the album is the childish "Certified" and the mis-matched "Star". Also, some of the songs kinda have the same beat/instruments but just recycled(cow bells and bass lines). But I must take into account that back in 2003 when the Neptunes were on fire, people liked that sound.

2 out of 5 stars OK.......2005-12-19

Honestly, none of the tracks stood out to me. I'm sure many others would like this disc, but I wasn't "feeling" it. However, I make an exception for "No Way" because it sounds like there's some of that classic "falling in love" music embedded in the backround.

5 out of 5 stars 702 should be out right NOW!.......2005-06-21

Okay these reviews made me buy this album! At first I was very upset at the CD but after two spins thru I was feeling this record. Star is 702's 1st album I bought and it is truly great.
Star, Feelings, Stringing me along, Trouble, and the standout Betcha She are good tracks to ride in the car.
But 702's forte is their slick seductive beats and smooth deliveries and they shine on their slow scorchers(say that 3x fast)! I still love you, Certified, Places, and I'm with it are all my favorites tracks! The only problem is 702 could have discarded some unnecesary tracks such as Better Days and Jealously!
702 may not have Destiny's Child harmonies but they should be ready to dominate the airwaves now that DC have called it quits... again!

5 out of 5 stars Startling Discovery of First-Rate Baroque Harpsichord Music.......2003-10-01

The story of how the music on this disc and its immediate predecessor came to be recorded is one of some musicological excitement. Geneviève Soly, a harpsichordist from Montréal, took a year off from performing and went nosing around music libraries looking for music to play. At the Yale University library she found an old collection of eight partitas for harpsichord by Christoph Graupner (1683-1760) that had been published from manuscript in Darmstadt in 1918 and then promptly forgotten about. It happens that Graupner was so modest that he never allowed a portrait to be made and turned down the job that Bach eventually got in Leipzig because his then-employer, the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt asked him to do so; he spent the rest of his life in that job. He also instructed his family to burn his voluminous manuscripts upon his death but the City of Darmstadt, where he had been court composer for over fifty years, challenged this in the courts and, after a legal battle of almost 60 years, they won the rights to the manuscripts which have been preserved there. A small publication of Graupner works was made in the early 1900s but didn't attract much attention. And otherwise he was pretty well unknown in modern times. This recording , Volume II of a projected series that will comprise all these partitas, is a world première of what, I believe, is world-class music. [I am indebted to Barry Brenesal, who interviewed Ms. Soly for Fanfare recently, for much of this information.]

Clearly, as with his generation of composers--Bach, Handel, Telemann and Scarlatti; what a generations THAT was!--he was aware of stylistic trends throughout Europe. Indeed, if I had not known the provenance of these pieces I would have thought they were written by a French composer. Unlike the music that Bach or Handel wrote 'in the French style' (e.g. Bach's French Suites) where the French approach was grafted onto German procedures, Graupner's music 'sounds' French through and through.

On this disc we have Partita No. 2 in C minor and No. 8 in F major, as well as excerpts from a couple of other partitas. The various movements are give French titles. [Interestingly, Graupner's assimilation of French musical styles didn't extend to a grasp of the French language; he consistently misspells 'gigue' as 'gique,' and 'rigaudon' as 'rigoudon.' He also calls a sarabande a 'sarabante.' No matter, it's the music that counts.]

Like French music of the period there is much less use of strict counterpoint as in German music--although the 'gique' of the 8th partita is a terrific fugue--and consistent use of French dance forms. The Sarabande of Partita 8 is followed by four variations--shades of Handel's 'Harmonious Blacksmith'!--the last of which is a study in arpeggios. The melodic materials in these partitas is absolutely first-rate; there's not a dog among 'em. I kept going back to delicate Air of Partita 8, to the mournful Allemande of Partita 2 and the following Courante and Sarabante. The Gavotte en Rondeaux (band 19, one of the excerpted dances) is particularly choice. The gigue in C major (another of the excerpted dances) is virtuosic in the extreme and neatly played.

Ms Soly's playing is superlative. Since this is a collection of dance pieces it is important to note that her handling of the various rhythms is crisp and invigorating. A word must also be said about the harpsichord on which she is playing. There is a full-color picture of it on the back cover of the booklet and it is visually a real work of art, with delicate leaves and flowers, as well as a pastoral scene, painted on the soundboards (yes, there are two sound boards with a separate one for the 16' strings). The five-octave instrument, a modern (2002) copy by Hubbard and Broekman of a ca. 1730 double manual harpsichord by H. A. Haas, has a very pleasing and deeply rich tone and includes a variety of hand-stops (including a marvelous 'nasale') that allow a good deal of tonal variety. The recorded sound provided by Analekta is a model of clarity; there is little of the clangor so often heard in harpsichord recordings.

A wonderful recording of a wonderful performance of wonderful newly-discovered music. Heartiest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars A Major Document of an Incredible Oeuvre..........2007-03-12

    .
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

    DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs, Volume 2.......2005-10-26

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (born 1925) is considered by many to be the foremost authority on Schubert Lieder for the male voice in our time. He likely made more recordings of this area of music than any other singer, having not only this 9 disc set, but another 9 disc set (Volume 1) for DG, the three complete song cycles: "Schwanengesang", "Die Schone Mullerin" and "Winterreise" (DG, Volume 3 of Fischer-Dieskau's Lieder edition), plus a 6 disc set of Schubert Lieder for EMI, also with Gerald Moore. Figure in the earlier recordings from the late 1940s, and live recitals on such labels as Orfeo, and there are ALOT of Fischer-Dieskau Schubert lieder recordings available.

Critics of vocal recitals and lieder may have other opinions, but I think this is as fine a collection as any. I keep this, like Volume 1, to be able to refer to a given song, not to listen to disc after disc of Schubert Lieder in one sitting, even though all are delightful works. Fischer-Dieskau manages to make Schubert's simple, strophic songs sound like great masterpieces, perhaps greater than they really are. And pianist Gerald Moore is an excellent partner: Moore and Fischer-Dieskau work as one, in perfect sync.

Keep in mind these are all songs for male voice, and not the complete Schubert songs. DG should be commended for releasing these recordings on CD and keeping them before the public. If you are really a Schubert completist, consider also the complete Hyperion Schubert Edition, with Graham Johnson, piano, and singers such as Lucia Popp, Peter Schreier, Janet Baker, Stephen Varcoe, Maragaret Price, Ian Bostridge, Martyn Hill singing all the 700+ songs Schubert composed in his short lifetime (1797-1828; Schubert's first lieder were composed about 1815). (The Hyperion Schubert edition is available in Great Britain for about $250 for 40 discs, if you cannot find it in the US).

For further comment, please see my remarks for DG, Volume 1 of Schubert Lieder by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

5 out of 5 stars Make up your mind to this journey........2001-02-07

Since this set of Schubert lieder (3 boxes, 21 cds in all) has become a legedary classic, I don't think I should make any comment. But just a suggestion to those who want to embark on these discs. Make up your mind on this journey. On facing such a tome record arranged and sung chronically, it's useless and wrong only to listen to some famous lieder or discs or just listen randomly. You should spare a long period of time, begin by listening from the very first disc to the last disc. And, during the period do not listen to any lied of other composers. Then gradually, lied by lied, disc by disc, you will forget this is Fischer-Diskau and Moore---This is a real life of a great soul! You are really touching and breathing with a great soul! Feel the sound of schubert, feel his struggle, his emotion, his feeling, his hate and love. Feel how those youthful spontaneous and raw lieder gradually developed into fully ripened masterpieces. Such wonderful experience belongs only to really patient listeners.

It took me about 2 full weeks to listen to the whole 21 discs. Fischer-Diskau and Moore chose the "Abschied(Farewell)" to be the last lieder read (this song happened to be the only lied of Schubert to be recite with piano accompaniment, and which was composed during his final years). Thus the whole hundreds of lieder, or the whole life of Schubert, ended on this lied, farewell to the earth. It began with "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde (Goodbye, you beautiful Earth)". I will forever remember when I finally came into this lied, on the first words of Diskau's "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde" I trembled and cried from the very first note to the last note. My god, it's untouchable granduer.

5 out of 5 stars LAS ROSAS DEL JARDIN.......2000-05-03

Mezzo soprano Marjana Lipovsek is a terrific singer whose career on disc has not always shown her interpretive gifts in the best light. She first gained notice for her chilling portrayal of the Sphinx in Enescu's Oedipe, and it's very satisfying to hear her in a song program of her own, particularly since her stunning rendition of Martin's Der Coronet a few years ago. Here, she sings songs to texts by Schiller, Goethe, Schlegel, and above all the lovely four Hymns by Novalis--some of the most beautiful music that Schubert ever wrote. --David Hurwitz
