Does a talent for writing catchy melodies have to come at the expense of "industrial cred"? Norway's Stephan Groth, a.k.a. Apoptygma Berzerk, has been challenging his core audience with that question over three albums and numerous singles. But the man behind such downright tuneful industrial-dance classics as "Non-Stop Violence," "Deep Red," and "Love Never Dies" makes it clear on Welcome to Earth that he's moving in a pop direction, expectations be damned. The album opens with the hard-driving "Starsign," but don't be fooled by its dark, arpeggio synths and Groth's snarled vocals--come the chorus, he goes all wistful on us, turning what would otherwise have been a straightforward rivethead stomp into something that wouldn't be out of place on a Pet Shop Boys album. Along with the nimble, propulsive "Paranoia," it turns out to be one of the disc's few truly electrifying moments, though guilty pleasures abound. "Kathy's Song" marries a light house rhythm to vocals straight out of a mid-'80s Depeche Mode anthem, and "Moment of Tranquility" steals the bass line from the Twin Peaks theme and pins it to a disappointingly bland ballad. But Welcome to Earth's oddest (and perhaps cleverest) choice has to be Groth's cover of Metallica's "Fade to Black," which takes the plodding, dirgelike original and remakes it into a bubbly dance-floor confection. AB fans will either be annoyed by the album or find themselves seduced by its better moments. --Steve Landau

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

Mad about Baroque.......2007-02-12
This is a terrific CD. The music is breathtaking. Just buy IT !!!!!
The beauty of the songs brings tears to my eyes.......2002-08-21
Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! I can not stop playing it!
Brilliant.......2001-10-31
Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.
These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.
Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20
If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.
This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.
A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.
it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.
Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30
With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.
An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.
Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulley

Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04
FIVE STAR FOR MUSIC. 1 STAR FOR AUDIO. Ok I've wanted this recording for almost 4 years. Now I got it. I am a discerning listener. This soundtrack is not the best quality. Tape hiss is very pronounced. You can tell it's taken directly from a cassette recording. I have other digital recordings of this music. They are miles ahead of this cd. Soundtrack is on the Rhino label. What? Rhino is not known for high fidelity. So it is very deceiving for one to buy a cd thinking it's John Williams conducting on a new recording in 1998 or whenever. It's the actual 1978 recording. Now let me unleash my rage. This thing sounds as if it's recorded with a single microphone in a bathroom, at a truck stop. Yes the music is phenomenal. My favorite track is #2 Krypton. I was hoping to discover some new hidden melodies that I've never heard in previous recording (original 1978). Nope. This IS the 1978 recording. So I will be getting the Debney recording just so I can hear what I'm missing. Love the music. Just can't hear it. ALL OF IT! But cool booklet. I can't listen to a booklet. But I got it. Whoopee.
AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31
After over a year of trying to find a seller of this fine soundtrack, I finally found it! It is high time that the full score was released on CD.
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.
Is John Williams Superman???.......2006-08-20
After listening to the CD, John Williams must be Superman. By far, the greatest movie score ever written.
Excellent!.......2006-08-10
Other than the over kill of "Can you read my mind", an excellent collection.
Hector, about the liner notes..........2006-07-14
I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Album Description
This work originates out of a wish that all my clients could have an understanding of the power and wonder of awareness in their daily lives. Body awareness is a skill that we lose when we start living in the fantasy worlds of the past and future. The body exists in the here and now, and if we place our awareness in our bodies, then we are reunited with the present moment.
This recording offers a way of learning to focus on our bodies, an exploration that brings us into the moment of now. Our bodies have so much to tell us, if only we listen. I offer a path for listening, for creating a dialogue with our bodies, for saying hello, and for moving the focus of our awareness through our bodies.
Join your body on this enlightening exploration of life and consciousness.
The three explorations on this recording are best done at separate times. Each exploration is complete in itself. You will need time to rest and integrate after each .
Introduction
Exploration #1: Scanning your body for information, reawakening your body's ability to sense and feel, beginning a conversation with your body, saying Hello.
Exploration #2: Moving awareness intentionally through your body. Reuniting the body's sense of wholeness.
Introduction to Exploration #3: About affirmations.
Exploration #3: Deep Relaxation Sequence. Deep relaxation, letting go of stress, being in a state of mental clarity and total relaxation, and returning to an alert, aware and awake state.

BEST BODY AWARENESS & RELAXATION CD I'VE HEARD IN YEARS!!.......2003-11-06
THE BEST RELAXATION CD I HAVE ENCOUNTERED! I have listened to literally 50 tapes and CDs on relaxation techniques and exercises, and this is by far the best I have encountered! Scott Gauthier's voice SOOTHS and puts your MIND, BODY & SPIRIT AT EASE. The exercises are EFFECTIVE, INTERESTING, IMAGINATIVE, RELAXING, opens one's breathing to be more RESTFUL & FREE, and brings the listener back to that vast ocean of calm within. The relaxation exercises helped me get in touch with myself, my feelings, my inner guide or inner voice (my authentic self). In addition, after completing the exercises I felt calm, but was better able to concentrate and had much more energy than usual. The sound quality is excellent; Scott Gauthier's speech is clear, calm, and easy to understand. He has a great voice for leading people through relaxation exercises. In addition the artwork on the front and back of the CD is beautiful and tranquil. For people who are too much "in their head" and analytical, some of these exersizes would be great at helping them get present in their body through body awareness exersizes. This CD would also be great for use with groups for relaxation training.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GREAT RELAXATION AND BODY AWARENESS CD, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE!
Extend body work from the table to daily life.......2003-04-02
This is a thoughtfully designed set of exercises that will extend the work done on a massage table and allow it to expand into daily life. It's practical and will save everyone time: the client who wants to do more than passaively receive bodywork and the bodyworker who wants to give his or her clients a way to relax and at the same time wake up the body.
So good it will put you to sleep.......2003-03-28
I listen to this CD every day. I'm really learning how to relax and it feels great.

THE CHILD DEVIANT.......2006-12-05
Wow!!!!! This is the most essential album a person can own in regards to the future pop genre. The second, being VNV Nation-Empires. On this particulur album by APOP, the listener is taken through a variety of techno waves and ultra surreal soundscapes that create deep emotion and romanticism. APOP's "Welcome To earth" album is priamarily about the end of the world/alien takeover/despair/drugs/and of course....love. Verry dancey, yet, many of the songs are slow and synthy. The music on this album is beautiful, and the lyrics are as well. This is certainly the best APOP album ever!
I like it a lot!.......2005-04-23
I'm new to the whole Euro/Dance/Tecno thing...but "somehow" I stumbled onto Apoptygma Berzerk and I'm very glad I did.
I like all the songs on this album/cd :) But for some reason
"Kathy's Song" really impacted me...I guess the original reviewer didn't get it? But I DID :)
If you like this type of music, I'd also suggest you give Assemblage 23 a try. Another of my favorites atm.
Regards,
SW
awesome.......2004-12-15
i have owned this cd for over 4 years and most of the songs still give me chills its so good
Just fragments.......2004-12-10
This is an incredibly popular album so I'm going against the grain I guess, but after listening to it a few times I began to notice something odd... There are catchy melodies all over the place, excellent accomplished vocals, great beats, but ... no ... SONGS. It's like he had a lot of talent, sure, and a bunch of great ideas for PARTS of songs, but it just never gets to the point where the whole song comes together in one coherant unit. I realized that's why I always find this album kind of unsatisfying. In contrast, consider VNV nation's Empires or Project Pitchfork's Daimonion, to name just two examples. Those albums are replete with good solid songwriting. They start with an idea, which Apop has plenty of, then REALIZE it, which Apop never quite manages to do.
Also, what's up with all that ridiculous alien business? I hope they're being ironic or something because if not, they need to ease up on the hallucinogens a tad.
Some great songs, but lots of filler.......2004-11-22
I found Welcome to Earth to be Apoptygma's best overall work to date, but only on the strength of a few standout songs. There is good stuff to be found here, songs like "Starsign," "Eclipse," "Kathy's Song," "Fade to Black," and "Paranoia" carry the CD. However, just about every other song on the CD is unenjoyable filler. Even so, I think Welcome to Earth is a fine CD for dance music and synthpop fans.

Customer Reviews:
Setting the standard.......2005-01-18
If you consider yourself a SERIOUS Christian Rock music fan, then this CD is obviously in your music collection already. If you don't have this CD, you have been missing out! JQP do not compromise on sound. Their message is also very blatant. My favourite track on the album, Hey Johnny, will echo around in your brain for days. Some of the music is very tongue in cheek, but when they get serious, it's very serious. They challenge mediocrity but give their listeners hope... inviting them to the Other Side! A MUST HAVE!
