A self-confessed movieholic who often spends afternoons before sets in movie theaters the world over, international DJ-celebrity Paul Oakenfold has gone about capturing the sinister, malevolent mood of Dominic Sena's action-crime thriller with careful attention to both art and audience. His weave of cuts such as the Dope Smugglaz' dark and tense "The Word (PMT Remix)," Lemon Jelly's sunrise chill-out "Kneel Before Your God," and his own retro-electro collaboration with Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force, "Planet Rock (Swordfish Mix)," is smart and evocative, a glistening picture of L.A.'s high-tech underbelly in 2001. Indeed, it's hard not to hear beautiful, wealthy people at gorgeous raves in bathroom stalls somewhere off the Sunset Strip as Oakenfold segues the sleazy "Stanley's Tune" into the neon techno of "Password."
Headphones could well be the way to go on initial spins, simply because Oakenfold's mix is spiced with the sort of celluloid nuances and attentions that are big enough to make this different from, say, Perfecto Presents Another World, but smooth enough to be enjoyable once properly processed. It's stealthy, imaginative, and more varied than a single listen might suggest. --Steffan Chirazi

Writer-director Marc Lawrence's romantic comedy gently satirizes the music industry's past and present via Hugh Grant's Alex Fletcher, a has-been Rock of the '80s icon given another shot at the charts by young pop diva Cora Corman (newcomer Haley Bennett). Grant gives some surprisingly credible--if often gently tongue-in-cheek--performances in his musical debut; indeed, he carries better than half the soundtrack with his earnest vocal charms. The production gets key help from Fountain of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger, who contributes a delicious, loving send-up of Wham! courtesy of "Meaningless Kiss," the emotive piano confessional "Don't Write Me Off," and two versions of "Way Back into Love," the comeback ballad/duet that drives the story line. A playful demo version of the latter pairs Grant with co-star Drew Barrymore (playing the florist who becomes Fletcher's unlikely songwriting foil), while Grant's ultimate duet with young Bennett evokes contemporary pop conceits with a keen, affectionate flair that also graces the young singer's Britney-esque "Buddha's Delight," "Slam," and the more obviously snarky "Entering Bootytown." Rounding out the collection are a pair of complimentary tracks by Swedish pop acts: The Sounds' bouncy "Tony the Beat" and the club-slinky groove of Teddybears' "Different Sound." Highlighted by Grant's sympathetic vocals and a knowing musical sensibility that never quite lapses into mere parody, it's a pop-lover's delight from start to finish. --Jerry McCulley

Music and Lyrics Soundtrack.......2007-07-07
I loved this movie, and I have watched it over and over again. The CD is also one of my favorites that I listen to constantly. I was very impressed by the duet, "Way Back Into Love," with Hugh Grant and Haley Bennett. All of Haley's songs were great, especially "Entering Bootytown." This little girl is a cutie, and I expect to see her become a big hit when she releases her first CD, soon. I think Hugh's solo, "Don't Write Me Off," is very good. I had no idea he could sing so well, and Drew Barrymore didn't do bad, either, with her demo version of "Way Back Into Love." It was worth the money just to hear the Haley/Hugh duet of "Way Back Into Love." They made a great team, and the song has wonderful lyrics, with a haunting melody. Loved it, loved it, loved it!
What's Wrong with a Bit of Meaningless Fluff?.......2007-07-06
Oh people...this has NO redeeming features except extraordinary chemistry between always-cute-and-sexy Hugh Grant and remarkably-focused Drew Barrymore in a simply silly but very lovely tale of a self-proclaimed has-been Eighties rocker (Grant)who commandeers his plant-care lady (Barrymore) to write some lyrics he badly needs in 48 hours.
And why does he need these lyrics? Because the greatest female pop icon of all time, Cora (played brilliantly by newcomer Haley Bennett, hilarious as a cross between Britney Spears and Christine Aguilerra) has invited him to join her on her upcoming world tour--IF he can write the "perfect song." This would mean goodbye to performances at county fairs--goodbye to has-been-hood and hello to resurrected rock-hood!
Can they do it? Can they write THE song when they only know each other's names, are completely different in age, temperament, and just about everything else? Hey--this is Hollywood.
Just fun all the way through, and the songs (both from Grant's mythical Eighties band "Pop" and his "new" hits) are actually catchy. Very enjoyable.
Hugh, Drew, and Haley-an awesome musical pair!!.......2007-07-01
When I think of Hugh Grant I think of Elizabeth Hurley's ex with the proper British accent and the 90's floppy hair. I never expected such a beautiful voice!! Wow!!! The songs are beautifully written and Grant's soothing voice over the 80's pop melodies and beautiful piano ballads was addicting! Drew Barrymore and newcomer Haley Bennet, each with their different voices, made listening to the different versions of "Way Back Into Love" very enjoyable.
Surprising and Refreshing!.......2007-06-30
I rented the Music and Lyrics movie expecting to go through the same emotions I experience when watching any romantic comedy. And as I expected, I watched with a silly smile on my face, there were moments I yelled at the TV, I bopped to the music, I laughed, and I cried, and I was totally charmed. But I am seldom so dazzled by a film's soundtrack to literally rush out and buy a copy!! The lyrics are catchy and refreshing, the songs are upbeat and fun, and they all mesh together perfectly. This is a soundtrack I will be listening to all summer long, and well after summer is over.
Music and Lyrics.......2007-06-27
The music is beautiful, the actors are the greatest, I love "Pop" and "Way back into love"

Product Description
'Anagram' is Jessica Congdon and Eric Holland. And Songs from Far Away is their latest collaboration; a refreshing, ephemeral electro slash indie pop record, perfectly suited to todays musical tastes and current thirst for what lies in the haze between electronic and rock. At a time where acts like Frou Frou, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Radiohead are capturing the interests of the greater public, Anagram are positioning themselves perfectly to capitalise on this trend. Partner this with the success they have enjoyed on recent film soundtracks and you have an act that is sure to attract some attention, if they havent already. Anagram draws from influences that extend beyond their place of birth and this is one of the most evident features of their music. Their sound is transient, but with confidence I can say, not fleeting in its appeal. Drawing from life experience has enriched the sound and travel especially, has given the bands music a depth that can only be drawn from maturity and a sense of place. Anagram possess a real identity that is subtle at times as it is obvious at others. Their tracks do not tell you what to think of their style or their desired meaning, they let you draw your own conclusions in your own time. Anagram are about connecting with an audience visually as well as aurally and so it is rather fitting that film soundtracks are of particular interest to the pair when it comes to future projects. Songs from Far Away will wash over you like it does the hero in the film sequence you vividly picture when listening to every track. Raw, understated attitude seeps between the confident riffs and percussive assaults that dominate this album. Torn between wanting to move and wanting to sit in reflection the words anxious, coy and confident seem an appropriate reference point, however contradictory their meaning. Slash your jeans, don your blazer and expect to hear from this group at a trendy bar, cinema or smoke-filled, basement level night-spot near you. Curious? You should be. -Brett Thompson

Save Your $$$ 4 Something Better........2001-04-21
Save your $$$ 4 a better CD. This CD is pathetic, there are big names on this CD (for example: Snoop Dogg, DMX, Mo Thugs, Eve, Layzie Bone, Daz Dillinger, etc.), but the songs on the CD are trash. This CD sounds like the left-over tracks that are always laying around that were not put on their own albums cuz they sound like s***. Save your $$$ 4 something better.
Blah.......2000-06-03
I've never given an album a 1-star rating before--until now. If any album deserves it, it's this one. Like the reviewer below me said, you always regret buyin soundtracks, but if you buy this one, you'll regret the decision even more. What a waste.
The big names are there--Mo Thugs, Daz, Snoop Dogg, DMX, Eve, Luniz, Too $hort, Kool G Rap, etc. But these have to be some of the wackest tracks put out by all of them, with the exception of maybe Snoop. I'd say some of his "Tha Doggfather" & No Limit tracks have been wacker than "Survive," but not by much! "All My Family" features recycled lyrics and uninteresting flows by Mo Thugs & Layzie Bone. Same thing with "Ryde Or Die" by DMX, Luniz, & Drag-On. That's exactly what this soundtrack does, drag ON and ON. I could describe why every track is wack, but I won't bore you.
The few OK tracks (VERY FEW) would be the title track "Turf Stories," "Playa Style," & "Shotgun Style." Even those are borderline unlistenable. Bottom line, this is a complete waste of perfectly usable CDs and CD cases. If there was a musical definition of wack in the dictionary, a picture of this CD would be next to it. DON'T BUY! Unless, of course, you're into wasting money.
weak album.......1999-12-01
like most soundtracks this one is not good as well. (i always regret buying sountracks.) on this album, the beatz are too tacky, and high profile, mainstream rappers put out an weak performance(dmx, luniz, daz, tray d, mo thugs/lazy bone). a disappointment. a few underground acts tried to rip the tracks, but the tunes and beats just couldn't take it there. And vocal/rap arrangements were stupidly produced.(eg: corny choruses, hooks and intros etc.) the saving grace of the album is "Survive" by Snoop dogg and Da Products. probably the only solid cut on this soundtrack. and the highlights of this album was The Lox and Eve with the song"Shotgun Style", and the other "aiight/ok"joints are "Better way" and "Playa Style". out of 19 tracks, not even half the album is listenable. Overrall, to sum it up, a dissapointment and a very lacking album.

Original Sound Track?.......2006-11-21
I put the question mark as this sound track to the series does NOT include the opening song that plays at the beginning of each episode. So if you are like me and looking for a copy of that song on CD this is not the place to get it. It does however have the song that plays at the end during the credits. Both versions infact.
Other than that the sound track is a nice mix of short instrumental peices that are well written and played well.
Over all this CD is ok, but not having the main song from the series is a real let down.
