Radiohead's third album got compared to Pink Floyd a lot when it came out, and its slow drama and conceptual sweep certainly put it in that category. OK Computer, though, is a complicated and difficult record: an album about the way machines dehumanize people that's almost entirely un-electronic; an album by a British "new wave of new wave" band that rejects speed and hooks in favor of languorous texture and morose details; a sad and humanist record whose central moment is Thom Yorke crooning "We hope that you choke." Sluggish, understated, and hard to get a grip on, OK Computer takes a few listens to appreciate, but its entirety means more than any one song. --Douglas Wolk

Is there really a better rock album?.......2007-07-01

Ten years out, I think we have sufficient historical perspective to fairly evaluate this album.

Honestly, it seems to me there are things about "OK Computer" that one might do differently given the chance to change it. That being said, when has rock music risen higher than this? When has anyone made an album that inspires, frightens, and intrigues more than this record? I am interested to hear suggestions, but at the end of the day I think this is probably THE pinnacle for popular music during my lifetime (1970 to the present). Accordingly, I give it 5/5 stars, and consider it more favorably than anything else I am aware of. I am at a loss to understand how anyone else could fairly rate it any lower than 5/5.

Radiohead's Ok Computer is by far one of the most shining achievements in music our ears have ever tasted. It is to music, what Speilberg is to cinema. Exit Music For a Film is melodic acid to my ears.

I saw Radiohead at Bonnaroo in 2006 and the three songs that made everyone (80,000+ people) burst into tears were "Paranoid Android", "Exit Music (for a film)", and "No Surprises"; all from "OK Computer". I think this is the finest album ever produced. Yes, THE best ever. (Yes, I've heard The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, etc.) They all come close, (some very close) but this album is as close to perfect as there has ever been. Please ignore the reviews giving this album one star, for they are from pedestrian trash who have no right to express their opinion.

Practically Flawless.......2007-06-02

I will start by saying that OK Computer is worth the money for the song "Let Down" alone. In my opinion, this song is Radiohead's finest and I consider it one of the best songs recorded in the past 20 years. Its complex layers of instrumentals and vocals build upon each other flawlessly to create the melancholy effect the Radiohead doubtlessly intended to create. It is one of those rare songs that I never get sick of hearing.

That said, the rest of OK Computer is almost equally flawless in its complexity and moodiness. Paranoid Android, Subterranean Homesick Alient, Exit Music, Airbag, and Lucky are all highlights for me, and this is definitely one album where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts--although the parts are great. The album is very much a journey (corny, I know), and definitely makes a statement. OK Computer represents one of those rare instances where an artist accomplishes, and in fact exceeds, what it set out to do.

If you don't own this album, buy it. If you don't own any Radiohead albums, buy this and The Bends. You won't be sorry.

Music for your head.......2007-05-16

Radiohead is one of the smarter bands in the rock business today - their cryptic lyrics, unexpected chord changes and clever use of studio effects put them a cut above the idiotic mid-90s pop-punkers they shared the spotlight with. Lots of creativity. For example, this group's got three lead guitarists, but DOESN'T use those guitars in the two senses most three-guitar bands do: either crush you with volume, or craft quarter-hour guitar jams. While there's some fine hard-rock here (Electioneering, Climbing Up Walls, bits of Paranoid Android), the best of this album comes from the quiet, moody, pensive songs with plenty of studio experimentation: the chilling Exit Music (for a Film), climactic closer The Tourist, mellow, paranoid, piano-driven (and Beatles-quotin') radio hit Karma Police, the chilling Subterranean Homesick Alien (gotta love the Dylan reference), and the slightly more optimistic but still extremely dark Lucky.
Then there's Paranoid Android.
This three-part suite is quickly becoming one of my favorite songs of all time. It manages to contain every element of this album: a quiet acoustic section, a blaring rock section, the haunting "Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain doooooooooooown on meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.... from a greaaaat height, from a great aeeeee..." part (which is so fjordkin' awesome...) with the overdubbed "That's it sir, you're leaving" and the Gregorian chant backdrop; a brutal one-note guitar solo, and paranoid (it is called Paranoid Android, after all) lyrics. Think The Beatles' Happiness is a Warm Gun, only longer and even more depressing. Plus it quotes Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Schweet!
Thom Yorke is one of the best vocalists ever - his voice is less a way of communicating the lyrics and more of a sixth instrument. Throughout the lyrics are cryptic, more about setting a mood than anything else. Compared to most of today's "alternative" (a genre I don't like - it fell apart when the grunge scene died, at least to me) rock, it sounds completely out of nowhere. There are a few touchstones: Pink Floyd, U2, late-period Beatles (all bands certainly worth getting to know if you don't know them already), but you can tell these guys are more leaders than followers and are destined for great things. I'd like to seem them on the fast track for rock canonization.
Now before I proclaim this one of the ten greatest albums ever, I'd like to discuss the only mistake. Fitter Happier. Bad, bad idea. The computerized voiceover/ironic recitiation works perfectly in a fifteen second situation, but dragged out to two minutes? Uh-uh, doesn't work. But that's all that keeps OK Computer from being able to compete with the Abbey Roads, Kind of Blues and Sticky Fingers of this world.

Good tunes!!.......2007-06-27

I bought this after hearing only one song from the cd. I'm a huge Sting fan and wanted to see how his son compared, and I wasn't let down. While Joe Sumner isn't quite up to par with his dad their voices are similar enough that if you're a Police fan you'll probably appreciate it.
I also enjoy the style of music FP seems to gravitate towards. They're sort of mildly dark, a grey feel, and they tell stories without telling stories. I dunno, give em a listen and decide for yourself.

Some hope for rock?.......2005-05-26

Opening Sting's intimate Irving PLace May 14th show in NYC (So as to not close the tour on Friday the 13th) I got my first introduction to Fiction Plane.

I knew they were "Sting's son's band", but I am a jaded 54 year old who has seen it all starting with my first concert being Hendrix in the fall of 1968. I went in early to see.

There is so much junk being passed off as popular music these days, heck Philadelphia even lost its only decent Alt Rock station earlier this year. Sons of popular performers have really done very little but coat-tail on daddy's name.

In spite of or because of his Father's influence Joe has put together a band that really impressed me. Live they were an opening act that you didn't really want to get off the stage. I bought the album at intermission (sorry, Amazon) and have been listening to it since, wishing I had been familiar with them prior to seeing them. Interestingly enough, I recognized nearly every track from the live performance first time round.

An occasional sophomoric lyric belies Joe's youth, but generally for a debut from a famous son this is a very hopeful album that is damn good as a stand-alone. Somewhat remininsent of the energy and pathos that forged the Police and the occasional uncanny resemblance of Joe's voice to Gordon's (especially "Silence"), this band is its own and by any standard of rock a band to be eagerly followed.

I look forward to what is hopefully to come and the next opportunity to see them in a live show.

Fantastic debut. Recommended for those bored with pop!.......2005-05-18

While not usually a fan of this kind of music, I was initially struck by Fiction Plane's manic energy, which all but forced me to make closer inspection. On the surface, many fair-weather music fans would be too quick to write-off FP as yet another in a string of faceless COLDPLAY / RADIOHEAD knock-offs, however that would be a big mistake. FP wields a characteristic that is uncommon among self-pitying, melodramatic, pompous Brit Rock: a dynamic sense of fun.

While my evaluation was initially instigated by seeing the band perform, opening for Sting at 2 shows, actually listening to the CDs brings FP's package together. The band's lyrics shower the listener with an array of emotions, while the musical dexterity displayed by each member launches them into a genre all their own. Yes, FP has its share of faux-ballads discussing relationships and life-lessons, however they are subversively concealed behind boisterous and genre-leaping songwriting. While the band itself cites NIRVANA as a distinct influence, I am more inclined to believe that FP's style is a monstrous hybrid of RADIOHEAD, MAROON 5, early POLICE, PORCUPINE TREE (check out the `ghost track' following "Wise", loaded with esoteric, progressive rock overtones) and a touch of early DURAN DURAN (especially in the lyric department). I would guess that FP wanted to get out of the gates and show the world a little bit of everything that comprises them, and this debut CD does just that. That in itself is probably the album's one downside - the fact that they move in so many different directions during the course of one disc that the listener is not offered a solid impression of what the band is truly about.

However, one cannot hold that against a young band on its debut release. New acts are usually pressured by labels to create one or two strong `radio-friendly' cuts, leaving the rest of the album for the band to noodle with as filler. However, rather than play that game, FP went out on a limb and broke down walls that would otherwise limit them to one sect of listenership. As there may be one or two songs on the disc that I would chalk up as `growing pains', there are still ten very strong tracks showing the range and intensity of a band that is primed for evolution and success. Excellent standout tracks, in addition to the aforementioned ghost track, include the funky "Listen To My Babe", the incredibly cynical "Hate", and the mixed metaphor "Cigarette". I implore you, check out FICTION PLANE; the best band you've never heard on the radio!

What an Experience!.......2005-05-05

I just went to see Sting perform a couple of nights ago, having no idea there was an opening band. I was extremely impressed with Fiction Plane. They had such a new sound, and my husband was particularly impressed by the drummer. I asked the girl next to me if she knew who they were, and she didn't have a clue either. I am very embarrassed by my ignorance, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on the paper the next day to find out who they were. I had to get their CD right away. It was a fantastic concert, and I was sorry I couldn't hear more of Fiction Plane. Sting was pretty awesome himself.

I saw FP live on 05/02/2005.. opening for Sting...

once i found out who was opening for sting, and to find out that it was his son... i'd figure i'd wait and see how he sounded before getting the albums... Joe's voice is fantastic.. a nice cross between early sting and bono... and with good looks to boot!!.. thank god for nearly front row seating right in line with the mic... as soon as his set was done, i had to rush right out and get both albums (this and the ep) before they sold out...

"cigarette" is definitely one of my fav's...

On its self-titled 2002 debut, OK Go nailed the two things every decent power-pop band needs--deadly looks and deadly hooks--to deliver the knock-out hit "Get Over It." Its follow up, produced by Tore Johansson (Franz Ferdinand, the Cardigans) and recorded in Malmöö, Sweden, offers more of the same. Much more. The Chicago quartet can't seem to move through its record collection fast enough, piling on the Beach Boys harmonies, Cars synthesizer squelches and Queen-inspired fanfare on breakneck songs like "Here It Goes Again" and "Crash The Party." Without any pauses for breath or quiet contemplation, it's frankly almost too much to take in one sitting. Then again, it can't be easy trying to cram the entire history of pop in just under an hour. --Aidin Vaziri

This album contains more than just the treadmill song. It's full of rock-awesome with a bunch of catchy songs you didn't know existed until you hear them. It's a pleasantly surprising album loaded with their funky fun sound that makes you wanna dance.

I remember last year I kept trying to watch the top 20 countdown on VH1, but I always kept tuning in toward the end of the show when they were doing a recap of videos 20 through 2. One video I kept seeing on there was OK Go's "Here It Goes Again", and I kept asking, "Who the hell is OK Go?" After I finally caught the innovative video, I eventually came to the conclusion that the song only became a hit (albeit for one week) because of the video; nobody would really care about the band otherwise. But their second album Oh No is actually quite impressive.

Scooter McGavin hit the nail on the head with his review (although I'm rating it three-and-a-half stars). But when I sat down and really paid attention to "Here It Goes Again", I decided that the song isn't disposable after all. In fact, the whole first half of the album contains the strongest selections, like "Do What You Want", "It's a Disaster" and "Invincible". Moreover, if tracks 1-7 were released on an EP or something, I could easily rate it five stars.

That said, it's a shame that some of the selections on the remainder of the album aren't as enthralling. "Maybe, This Time" is boring, "Crash the Party" didn't do anything for me, and "Television, Television" really isn't much more than a throwaway song. But Oh No still has enough good tunes to warrant a purchase. If you like Weezer, you should like this.

Am I the only one who hears a touch of that old Urge Overkill magic in this? Great stompin' hooks, effusive rockers, and melodic mellowness! (although a bit heavy on the mellow stuff here for me...)
Yes, there are similarities between this sound and Franz Ferdinand, U.O. and others; but that really doesn't impugn the music being presented here- after all, aren't Franz Ferdinand indebted to Gang of Four?
On a whole, this album is pretty great, if just a tad uneven- and should they concenrate on cohesiveness next time, look out world...

A must have!.......2007-06-27

This album is a must! Every song on here is AWESOME! OKGo is a rare phenomenon...they just don't have a bad song. This album will have you in a state of constant movement...dancing, tapping your toe, a little bounce in your step. Don't Ask Me and Get Over It are rockin'. There's a Fire,Cinnamon Lips,The Fix, What to Do, 1000 miles an hour,Bye Bye Baby, are all different sounding songs that are equally excellent. Return is a beautiful song...very moving, you may want some kleenex. I highly recommend this album, especially if you already have OH NO! We bought the DVD set with this and it is so worth it! Don't miss out!

Great CD!.......2007-03-12

I was very pleased with this CD. i've been looking for music to just chill out to and this was the perfect thing. my favorite song is "You're So Damn Hot." it's got that beach like feeling. Not only did i fall in love with it, all of my friends enjoy it too. This self titled album is full of energy. This is their first CD and it should be the first on your list to buy.

Lots of Musical References Here, Still Great JF!.......2007-07-06

I love the title. For those who don't know, I'm OK You're OK was one of the first bestsellers in Pop psychology. So, what does the title of a book have to do with the music on this disc?

Who knows. Maybe Jason finished the album, then stepped back and saw that the songs are a union of pop music and lyrics that delve into people's minds and motives. Okay, maybe I'm getting too deep about this. One thing is certain: there's way more than sugar pop here. Jason's musical references are many, indicative of knowledge of where pop has been for the last 30 years.

The opening track (This Time) is glorious; you want to open the windows and let summer in, take a ride a convertible with the top down, or step out at night and just have a great time. It's funny, too, that "steppin' out" should come to mind. Think of Joe Jackson's brighter, poppier songs married to the production sheen of XTC. (9/10)

"NYC" sounds like a television theme song for a new network sitcom. (9/10)

"Stephanie Tells Me" reminds me of "The Plan" from 1999's Can You Still Feel album. (9/10)

"The Knew" sounds like a long-lost ELO track, while "Hurricane" reminds me of songs Beck has been writing lately. (7/10)

"Runaway"...now here's a real sleeper track; what a concoction this one is: it begins with a haunting synth line reminiscent of early Gary Numan and some jangly, Pink Floyd-style guitar work. Overall, it reminds me of Alan Parsons Project, but in a good way. (10/10)

"Komplicated Man" and "Contact" sound as if they were recorded as bonus tracks for Jason Falkner Fan Club members. I still really like them, though! If anyone's familiar with The Futureheads' new disc, News & Tributes, check out the chorus and "oh-oh's" on "Contact." I'm betting if you like News & Tributes, you'll like this song too. (8/10)

Not quite as Okay as i'd hoped for..........2007-06-03

It's been a long wait for the new Jason Falkner album, almost nine years since the wonderful "Can you still feel" album.
Unfortunately I think Falkner has had too long to stew over these songs & as a result there is not much freshness to them.
This combined with the fact that he produced the record himself in between many other projects, (Beck, Air, Magnet, Paul McCartney to name a few.) has resulted in a very flat sounding record.
There are a few nice tunes that jump out and provide the type of glorious hooks that we are used to with Falkner. Sadly these are few & far between as the record treads much safer territory than his previous efforts.
Having said that, it's still a great record in comparison to what a lot of his contemporaries are currently producing.
If JF can churn out his next record within eighteen months I expect stellar results!

Another Winner for Jason!.......2007-05-22

Jason Falkner delivers another winner with I'M OK YOU'RE OK. It's been a long wait since his last solo album, but certainly worth the wait. This album is way more than 'OK.' Probably the most prolific of the ex-Jellyfish-ers. Pure pop the way it's meant to be played. You won't be disappointed by this. Hopefully it will get an American release soon. The Japanese release has a nice bonus track. Way to go, Jason. Also check out TV EYES, the New Wave influenced project he did with Jellyfish founding member, Roger Joseph Manning Jr.

If you love Jason, you have to get this. It just might be his best album yet. It's worth ordering the Japanese version because there's no telling when the US version will come out, and the bonus track is great. How can one man be such a rock God???!!!

UltrmegaOK is more than okay.......2007-04-24

In 1988 I walked into Tower Records on South Street in Philadelphia sporting a mohawk, a leather, and Doc's. I was looking for the latest Charged GBH album. As I strolled the isles I heard this album playing in the background. I stopped dead in my tracks. I listened to three songs and then asked the dude at the register who was playing. He smiled, reached under the counter, and pulled out this record. I immediately bought it and life changed forever.

Disregard reviews that compare this album with Superunknown or Badmotorfinger. You simply can't compare this (or "Louder than Love" for that matter) with their later works. It's like comparing Dark Side of the Moon with The Wall and declaring one inferior.

Listen to the samples and judge for yourself. In my humble opinion this is one black, hard, and raw album and also happens to be one the best rock-n-roll records of the 1980s.

Bizarre and brilliant.......2006-04-14

What else is there to say about Soundgarden? From 1987 to 1997 this insanely talented band made some of the best rock music in decades. The combination of virtuoso guitarist Kim Thayil and the eerie, nearly inhuman wailings of Chris Cornell made for some truly cutting edge rock, the likes of which have never been replicated.

Where else are you going to hear musicianship and composition like that in Beyond the Wheel and Mood for Trouble? While not as polished as the band's later releases, Ultramega OK is ultimately a mind-bending and ear-shattering listening experience. It's not for everyone, but then again no ingenious music is.

it's just ok.......2006-03-21

you can hear the seeds of later soundgarden songs. they really came into the sound they were known for later on with the album Bad Motor Finger. if you are a completist then by all means purchase this album. if you are just discovering Soundgarden and like what you have heard on the radio or where ever then pick up the later albums. Superunknown, Down on the upside, Bad Motor Finger all have the same feel yet they have their distinct sounds. you can really see where the band was going over the course of these albums. this album is not terrible it's just that the songs lack individuality and technical skill that the band would demonstrate on later albums.

Unique.......2006-03-04

It's pretty cool to be able to go back and hear one of your favorite bands as they were when they were still finding their sound. On this album, you can hear their experimentation with various kinds of rock; heavy, raw metal and such. And you can also hear where they found what works for them, and developed it. Thayil's heavy, raw but sonically pleasing guitar grooves that were characteristic of the band are present here, as are (less often than later on) Cornell's emotion-racked shrieks. My personal favorite is the utterly explosive vibe of Incessant Mace.

There are some missteps, but those are taste-directed; I don't really like the abstract 665 and 667 interludes and the psychopathic Circle of Power. Still, it's very worth a listen.

4.5 stars - An excellent, underrated debut album.......2005-05-14

Ultramega OK (1988.) Soundgarden's first album.

Although Soundgarden rose to fame in the nineties, like so many other grunge acts, the fact of the matter is that they had been around a good deal longer than most of their nineties peers. Hard as it may be to believe, Chris Cornell and the boys had been together as early as 1984! While the group didn't really break into the musical mainstream in 1993, the group actually released quite a few recordings prior. Their first major recordings were the Screaming Life and Fopp EPs, released in 1986 and 1988, respectively. These eighties recordings were NOTHING like the nineties band so many people know and love. Their first full-length album was the forgotten Ultramega OK, originally released in 1988. Is the album overlooked because it's inferior to other recordings the band has done, or is it an underrated masterpiece? Read on for my review.

One listen to this album left me in shock - and I mean the GOOD kind of shock! I had never heard any other album like this in my life - only the Soundgarden EPs that preceeded it even came close. The sound here is certainly NOT that of the band that reached their commercial peak in the eighties (it makes you wonder just how many people even knew the band existed in this day and age!) On this album, the band's sound is one that fuses elements of grunge, eighties metal, punk, and practically everything in between. If done wrong, this can create a jumbled musical mess, but Soundgarden does it perfectly. I have a collection of several hundred CDs, and there isn't a single one that sounds close to this album. The sound here is THAT unique. Chris Cornell sounds nothing like the nineties rock star most fans know and love, but I personally prefer his vocals on this recording over those on the more popular recordings. I really had my doubts about this album at first (I didn't think grunge in the eighties would be anything special), but my doubts were shattered almost immediately. The album now gets very heavy rotation on my CD player. Although this isn't an album I'd recommend to someone just getting into Soundgarden, I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is already a fan of the band.

Sadly, many of Soundgarden's early albums are now out of print and are pretty much impossible to find in stores. This sucks because all of these albums are excellent. But then again, it seems like pretty much every band has some great stuff that's out of print and is very hard to find. Hopefully, the early Soundgarden recordings will get reissued someday. Until then, all we can do is hope.

I can't say a whole lot more. Ultramega OK is more than just OK - it kicks ass! Any doubts I had about early grunge were shattered with this album. There's really nothing else like it. If you're a fan of Soundgarden, by all means add this to your collection - you'll be pleasantly surprised. If you're new to the group, though, start with Superunknown - the eighties releases, while excellent, may give you the wrong idea about the band. My conclusion is simple - this is a damn good album, and I strongly recommend to any fan of Soundgarden, or the underrated underground grunge of the eighties in general.

Sings to my DNA.......2007-02-17

While it's not unusual for me to have several different recordings of the same work by different performers, this is the only case in which I have two identical CDs, one for home and one for the car. I have to assume my Scots-Irish ancestry has some Nordic blood, as this music affects me powerfully. I haven't even read the program notes, so it can't be that the text's mesmerizing. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if mead is your drink, it's perfect.

Pretty Good.......2007-02-01

There are some really awesome moments on this disc. All of the Voluspa segments, especially the final one describing Ragnarok, and The Song of the Mill are very well done. The stark atmosphere serves to not only enhance the singing portion, but really draw you into the song. The booklet that comes with the CD is essential, with beautiful translations of the poems that put Caroline Larrington's Poetic Edda to shame.

But there are also a lot of weak moments. I can't say that there is anything interesting in the instrumentals, which are fortunately few and far between. The Tale of Thrym is ok the first time through, but loses it's appeal very quickly. Odin's Rune Verses lack emotion compared to the rest of the pieces.

I also found the Italian Opera style singing a bit imposing. The rolling of the r's is sometime distracting, and I wondered the first time I heard it if that's what the language really sounds like. Of course, this is my first exposure to Icelandic, so I really couldn't tell you if its right or wrong, but the male singers do it much more than the females. Perhaps it just comes from their background as opera singers.

Overall, this is a good thing to have if you're at all interested in Norse/Icelandic/Viking mythology. If you're not, I think you can skip it.

For the Nordic Soul, an echo across time..........2006-10-23

I thought nothing like this existed, yet here it is! The Sequentia group sings ancient Nordic mythological poems, in very much the manner of ancient Skalds. The skald was a bard, or troubadour, of ancient Scandinavia. In the Sagas, many of the greatest skalds came from Iceland, a land colonized by Norwegians unwilling to live under the dictatorship of King Harald Harfa-gri (Harald Fairhair). The songs on this album are recited in Icelandic, a language that has changed only slightly from the Old Norse spoken by their ancestors. The style of performance is a specualtion, to a certain degree, but very much like that of most traditional Nordic folk music, traditions that have been passed on for centuries.

Medieval Latin? Music.......2006-10-14

For some reason, it doesn't sound quite nordic to me. Did they really roll their 'R's in the Old Norse, or is Sequentia putting a Latin spin on it? It sounds like Italian opera accompanied by medieval Icelandic instruments.

I am impressed by, actually, the insert book! It has 47 thin pages of history, lyrics, and translation.

I bought this CD because the only foreign language I really retain is from foreign music. The lyrics are decently clear for learning. I didn't expect the insert book to have Icelandic lyrics, but it has that and a translation. There is a summary on each of the poems also.

The music is a bit simple, but the real art is in the song. The singing could even go without instrumentation. The album is 76:52 minutes long.

(10.09.05) I will begin this review with a paraphrase from the included one-sheet: "This album was recorded very shortly after me and Gunni met Kristin and Gyda and became a four people band... It was originally released on an Icelandic label called Thule but early on a number of disputes came up which ended up dragging on for many years... We have the rights for the record back now and are really happy to be re-releasing it on our friends label where it seems to fit in like home."

If not for that disclaimer, one might take this re-release as new compositions from Múm (which I accidentally did when I tossed the CD in my car's player without reading a word.) If this indeed was to be a new release for Múm, it would most certainly be a step back. The sound quality is not exactly on par with what a Múm fan might be used to, and the major-scale over clicky-click beats thing has been beaten to death by a zillion aspiring laptop rockers in countless indie and net-releases for the last five years.

But... this release was recorded in 1999, which if memory serves, was around the time that the clicky movement was first being born (that would place Múm at the vanguard, where they belong.) This disc also provides a candid look into the Múm toolbox; the clean, patient sounds, ethereal keyboards, live instrumentation and pulsing rhythms are all there in infancy, offering up a missing link in the evolutionary story of Múm.

Highlights are "Asleep on a train" which features a hypnotic drum loop, melodica, and bells weaving in and out of a sinewave bass and water-drop melody; "The Ballad of a Broken Birdie Records" which highlights a wispy female vocal over lethargically crunchy clicks and synths; and "Sunday Night Just Keeps on Rolling" which forces the user to wait in anxiety for six of eight minutes before delivering an ejaculatory, up-tempo, bit-degraded drum rush.

All in all, this disc will find its way into my car collection and will most definitely get spins alongside other Mum discs like Summer make good and Finally we are no one. It will also serve as a stopgap until the next collection of new Múm tunes is born.

Awesome rock and roll!.......2007-06-27

an awesome band! Nothing has been this good in a long time! If you love the Beatles, you'll love OKGo. There is thundering rock(Invincible),dancing(Here it goes again), and lovely ballads(oh, lately it's so quiet). A dream come true...you can listen to this one over and over...it's always exciting. This band shows great skill at their instrumentation, vocals, videos, art, and appearance...a rarity these days.

Music that's fun.......2007-06-13

I was over a friends house and when I mentioned the dearth of recent music that's fun to listen to, he picked out this disc, removed the DVD from the box and put on the treadmill video.

The music was good, and the video was the best use I've ever seen for treadmills.

He played a few more songs, and to make a long story short, I decided to pick up my own copy.

I liked the treadmill video enough that I decided to play it for my parents when they came to visit. They liked it too.

OK GO is a creative band with talent.

Wanna feel like you're 14 and just went to your first stadium concert? Wanna feel like you're 21 and can finally get into 1st Ave to see all of your buddies rock, be silly and not take yourself too seriously?
YOu can do all of that and not give up your nearly-40-year-old brain! This band is entertaining from every angle. There is not a bad song in either release.

you will not be disappointed. I thought the Great American Rock band was disappearing - OH NO.
The limited ed has the videos we've all seen plus some hilarious extra song/videos.
The only problem is that your 4 and 6 year-olds might get tired of you rocking out when they'd rather listen to bluegrass or opera!!!??? Further proof of alien invasion.

When they finally come to destroy the earth..........2007-03-18

"You will go into a room together and you will rock."

So promises Tore Johansson, producer of OK Go's sophomore album, "Oh No." And the powerpop band actually manages to do just that: make people rock, with rollicking rockers laced with punk. If a few songs didn't strongly resemble other dancerock bands of the moment, it would be "invincible!"

The album kicks off with two of the best songs on it: the sinuous, muscular "Invincible" and energetic rock-stomp of "Do What You Want." These songs are catchy, rough and gloriously rock-y. Pretty good replay value too -- despite the oft-repeated phrase "come on come on!", vocalist Damian Kulash keeps the sound fresh. "When they finally come to destroy the Earth/they'll have to deal with you first/bet they won't be expectin' that!"

Until about the halfway point of the album, OK Go continues this energetic dancerock sound, churning out one excellent song after another. But it's followed by songs that are a B to the first few songs' A. The last half is not terrible by any stretch, but the second stretch of songs lack that explosive, muscular style in the first.

It's a credit to OK Go's dancerock capability that they can overcome the strong Franz Ferdinand vibes that permeate a few of the songs. They have a musical IT -- they have energy, solid riffs, and they have a vibrant style that makes their music even more entertaining.

Musically, they're very good and polished, with some very solid rock vibes matched up to some entertaining lyrics. They have actually become better since their debut album, downplaying the keyboard in favour of thick mats of guitar and bass. As a makeover, moving from powerpop to dancerock is a pretty inspired one.

Kulash has a rare kind of voice: He can change from a monotone to a howl as if a switch had been flipped, and has a pleasant purr when he's being quiet. He's joined by a quartet of capable musicians, whether it's twisting basslines or rapid-fire drums. And though guitarist/pianist/keyboardist Andrew Ross left during the recording of the album, the sound doesn't suffer.

And this is a case where the deluxe version of an album is definitely worth getting, since the second disc is crammed with goodies. A wealth of music videos, a documentary, making-of, youtube contests, and plenty more that fans will adore. In fact, after seeing this stuff, I actually like the band even more than before.

Ok Go starts to shuck off their powerpop origins, in favour of an energetic dance sound. It has a few uninspired songs, but if they follow the blazing lead of "Invincible," they will only get better.

I purchased this album because my college age children wanted to share their music with me. The videos age great and the music is fun.

Definately needs to be reissued. This album rocks........2000-04-10

What do you get if you cross Lou Reed and Blur: this album. The Dandys sound like a bunch of unapologetic junkies and their music has a sarcastic mellow feel to it. This combination works well. "Lou Weed" is a great parody, and a great song at that. "The Coffee and Tea Wrecks" is a classic. It is kind of stupid happy with a thick sound from a fuzzy bass line and layered vocals. Definately a fun album.

One of My Favorite Albums.......1999-04-24

I bought Dandys Rule OK after I had owned ...The Dandy Warhols Come Down for about 5 months. Although I could not get over how good Come Down was, Dandys Rule OK is even better. Among all of the albums that I own, this is one of my favorites. Some of the best songs are "(Tony, This Song is Called) Lou Weed", "Nothin' To Do", "Dick", and the unbelievable epic "It's a Fast-Driving Rave-Up With the Dandy Warhols Sixteen Minutes".

This CD reflects the amazing Portland music scene and the Dandy Warhols talent. The Dandy Warhols continue to amaze me at each show I attend.

Actually better than the second album.......1998-11-15

I had the "...come down" album and liked it OK, but I saw this one used for a buck fifty so what the he-he-heck, picked it up. I was surprised. I'm not sure what the label genealogy of this band is, but it's easy to understand why Capitol gave "...come down", the follow up, such a big media push. "...rule: OK!" rocks. Big, singeing guitar noise and production lace this surprisingly diverse record, rooting the band to a planet that you feel sure you can find your way back to as you trip across the sonic space they traverse. One very interesting thing is the baldness of it's borrowing: the band wears it's influences on it's bicep while neatly avoiding abject plagarism. From Lou Reed to REM to Spaceman 3 to Neil Young to Echo and the Bunnymen, even Ultra Vivid Scene, you wonder if the songwriter in this band wasn't sneaking into your room and listening to your record collection. It may be a little long, but chalk that up to youthful exuberence and a wide storehouse of material. Where the Warhols end up, nobody can say, but where they started from is pretty durn cool.

Dandy's Rule! OK?.......1998-05-15

Imagine the Velvet Underground had turned into glam rockers. Thats sort of what you get with the Dandy Warhols debut CD. Fun, funny, swirling psychedelia. Check it out.
