The self-titled debut by 18-year-old Mya combines trendy tracks with more thoughtfully constructed songs for a multi-textured album. An array of guest performers, including popular R&B crooner act Dru Hill and innovative hip-hop rhymer Missy Elliott, help out on this set. Mya is at her best in lower vocal registers, such as on the rolling "Baby It's Yours" and the funky, soul-struttin' "We Gonna Make You Dance." Piano and organ synthesizers set a noble tone for the romantic ballad "If You Were Mine," while gentle acoustic guitar play and a swaying melody effectively deflect the rather vengeful lyrics of a lover spurned on "If You Died I Wouldn't Cry Cause You Never Loved Me Anyway." The Sephardim were the Jews of Spain. They picked up many musical elements on their journey there. The sum is very much an alchemy of antiquity. It's got Greek modes, North African percussion, Turkish/Arabic melodies and a bit of Western European refinement. The original Jewish component is the lyrical text which was first sung by women around the house. After being steeped in the culture of Andalusian Spain for a few centuries it allowed more and more instrumental phrases. And since this was secular music, it was acknowledged and enjoyed by everyone at this place in time -- Muslims, Jews and Christians. The ensemble who performed these pieces did a great job, utilizing completely acoustic and culuturally-respective instruments. You can't beat the price either!

Note, however, that Sephardic music is NOT verifiably medieval, having been recorded only in the 20th century. Also note that Sephardic songs are/were rarely accompanied by instruments (all the arrangements here are instrument-heavy). Nonetheless, the fact remains that Michael Posch, Marco Ambrosini, Riccardo Delfino, and Thomas Wimmer are among the very few truly brilliant early music players at large. Their names may never be trumpeted by early music critics, but that's because said critics tend to be desiccated scholars instead of impassioned musicians (rather like most of the performers they critique). This CD features lots of compelling improvisations and extended solos -- including one, "kavaldulka", that's just from another world. Purists be damned: the musicianship is too good to be missed! btw, the ensemble is also known as Unicorn and Oni Wytars.

Of all the Ladino/Sephardic music I have come across, this is one of the most lovingly crafted compilations. The ensemble treats every song with respect and care, and plays them with great spirit. The songs chosen were also organized in a way that helps to reflect the beauty of the music. Absolutely enchanting!

I agree with the other reviews here; this is an excellent CD, especially given the bargain price. I love the fiddling on this disc in particular - it's a must-listen for any fiddlers looking to expand their horizons. Great rhythm throughout, too, and the recording quality is fantastic; the music really comes alive in stereo. Highly recommended.

The above review hits the nail on the head. What I especially enjoy are the inventive and highly rhythmic arranagements that bring out the full variety, verve, spirit and beauty of this special music.

With the bargain price this is a good way to exoplore this genre of music.

mya third lp she grow somewhat on this cd but she could did must better than this she covers tom petty ,s free fallin she,s done other covers like dolly parton but this cover this diffrent in a way most pop chicks do a crappy job of rock covers exmaple (shakira,s verison of amerosimth dude look like lady) pretty bad she did that cover she before came to the breakthrought oral fixation 2 she came with where are thieves back before that, to mya change the words the song and did a decent verison of the song 6 /10 i known mya since the frist lp in 98 the same time i met shakira i hope mya what cover will she do next troi amos or yes i hope the next cd is better. mya did better than thosse two chicks mr dion and shakria.

mya covers tom petty,s free falin and get this people she,s don,t copy him she her own verison tom petty,s song rest fall short it to her to frist album i brought because 1. had not heard nothing from 98 to 04 in six years I remeber when she came out in april of 98 i was 13 years old my mom,s know you too bad aaliyah died because i would wanted her to do RUSH,S anthem or Primus / little puppies pretty funny huh . OK JOB SHE could did much better she had sean paul dance hall star is on this cd mya a woman now unlike the late aaliyah mya not a household name but she people know she is .

I love this album!!! this album and Mya's Fear of Flying have a tie for her best album. Tha songs are hot and the title totally describes the different moods and tones of the songs. Taste This,Hurry Up, Anatomy 10N1, Free Fallin', You, Things Come & Go, and Step all could've been great singles. She has funky, weird sounding songs that r also great: Late, whatever Bitch. Sophisticated Lady is also funky, kinda good but that's the ONLY SONG ON THE ALBUM THAT I DON'T LIKE.Even though i don't like that song, you can still put the cd on and listen to every song without skipping any song. I also like the bonus song :Real Coompared To What (song for coca cola commercial with Common). This cd doesn't dissapoint.

This album was so different than what I expected.
While most don't seem to rank this album as a 'favorite,' you have to give an extra star for it's uniqueness.

I've always liked Mya and even though she through a curve with this album... I have to even like her more. I think it was brave.
This album reminds me of Aaliyah's last album in that it was so NOT what I was expecting. I was expecting Aaliyah's whole album to have the 'We Need A Resolution' style. She, like Mya in this album, experimented and it showed confidence and courage... totally respectable.

The thing I don't like is that Mya hasn't made an album since this one... what's up with that? Clubbin too much to work??? Whatever!!! GET BACK TO WORK MYA!!!!! Quick, hurry up... your fans are getting old, we might not make it to your next album if you keep up like Hayley. The Olympics might even pass you up. Oh wait, they already did...

Garbage! Pure garbage! Sh**! Pure sh**! The only reason she got any type of record deal is because of her looks. She cannot sing whatsoever, and her voice is terrible, and she has no place in the music industry. If you have not noticed, all her hits (only 3 of them) are all collaborations, which says a lot because she can't even sell on her own and stand on her own feet. The only good song on here is "It's all about me" with Sisqo. Seriously, don't waste your time or your money on this talentless slut! Grade: F

Young R&B star Mya got some mileage from her 1998 debut album's "It's All About Me" and "My First Night with You," but made her deepest marks that year with cameos on two film-related hip-hop singles, Pras Michel's "Ghetto Supastar" and Blackstreet's "Take Me There." Back with her own second release, Fear of Flying, she aims to solidify her identity. The promising title--perhaps a nod to Erica Jong's groundbreaking '70s novel about liberated female sexuality?--turns out to be a reference to commitment-phobia. The high must be followed by heartbreak, the song implies. That theme resounds in various ways through many of the record's other tracks, from the sneering "Case of the Ex" to the bouncing "Lie Detector" (which showcases dancehall king Beenie Man). Mya grabs for a piece of her own freedom with the party celebration and Left Eye duet "Takin' Me Over," which comes as a welcome change of pace from the focus on failed romance. Fear of Flying is hardly a great album, but it does represent a real step forward for the singer. --Bob Roget

Mya may not have the best voice in the industry, but she can put together a pretty solid album. This album went in a different direction of her first album. The album was strong in the beginning and end and a few fillers in the middle. I enjoyed "Case of the Ex", "Best of Me", "Can't Believe" which should've been a single, and "Man of My Life". Mya really spread her wings on this album. Can't wait for her next CD.

I love this cd!!! it is so great!! i loved mya's music eva since her first video...this is tha total opposite of what happens to most artists on their second album (it usually sucks) This is without a doubt in my mind, Mya's best album!!! I have the re-released version with FREE on it. I love almost all the songs. My favorites are:

I remember this album when I was in the 7th grade and loved the single Best Of Me with Jadakiss. I played this album constantly. Fear Of Flying is about growing up,learning lessons,taking chances,listening to others and minding your heart. Mya takes steps,makes those moves,and soars with this album that exceeds all possibilities and fulfills all expectations. This album contains sassy,sexy,soulful and wise,hip-hop informed, and R&B flavored,laced with heartfelt singing and state of the art beats. This album took Mya into new uncharted territory and delivers an R&B/pop sound that signals maturity and a new outlook. This album has been certified Platinum. Remember,this was 2000. Mya was 21 or 20 when she recorded this album.

    Sometimes, when reworked versions, and covers seem to come along in music, they really always don't seem to fit the bill very well. For Lady Marmalade by LaBelle, it was and still is absolutely divine and soulful. Unfortunately, the version from Moulin' Rouge with Nicole Kidman, isn't one to live up to expectations. The collaboration of Pink, Lil' Kim, Christina Aguillera, and Mya, sounds more like a divafest of knowing who is the better diva. The song also adds a rap that Lil' Kim conjured that really wasn't part of the version LaBelle made that didn't even add spice to it. Instead, it just sinks the track to even lower heights. All in all, I really didn't find this version exciting and worth listening to, time after time. It really doesn't have the longevity of the original one from the 70's, and it never will.

    This song is sexy, sassy and funky.....and most of all a cool party song, which conjures up the good mood. The Thunderpuss Mixes are far superior to the original.

    The Radio Edit, is a mellow, funky, Latin mixture with a flow of cute beats. Really sexy at that!

    Thunderpuss Radio Mix. This is a shorter version of the Thunderpuss club mix.

    Thunderpuss Club Mix. This is a House esque-BT/Victor Calderone remix, with sharp disco beats and a menacing but cool scream/yell as a intro for the song, it also continuously slows down and re-builds up, when X-Tina's voice breaks its way through every now and then, accompanied by the other performers being- Pink, Mya, Lil' Kim and Missy Elliot. Excellent!.

    Thunderpuss Mixshow. This mix has the same dance formula, more likely with allot of subjective enhancements, voices have been reduced and altered in other parts, while Missy Elliot isn't left out until the end of the song.

    It doesn't have a big variety of remixes, but rather its a average and substantial variety of mixes. Overall, if you're a fan of dance music, you cannot say you like to party without havin' this song!!!.

    Now this song was really cool originally but like so many thing the cover has improved it greatly. CHRISTINA AGUILERA is by far my favrite singer and the best out there....then we got LIL' KIM my favrite rapper. add in MYA AND P!NK who can belt a tune with the best of them and I also am a huge fan of you know you got a great song. Who ever put this song together new what they were doing. Then the even go in order of how I like them like a countdown..In at #4 is Mya, then P!nk at 3, kim comes in at @ and My girl xtina is #1.
    This is also the sonmg where we see xtina changing more....its music history right here these women are amazing.

    What can I say??This remake floored me.While Mya and Missy could've easily been left off(Mya can't sing, and Miss is cool but she doesn't really contribute a worthy amount to the song), this remake is incredible.The production is phenomenal, this is one of the best dance songs I've heard in recent memory.I can honestly say that this did the older vesion much justice,Christina makes the song, and Pink adds harmony and edges things up.It's an incredible remake that does not get old quickly either(I still love it)!!

    Mya's second and last single from her album is "Fallen", it's a really good R&B song, it has really smooth beats and Mya's vocals fit perfectly to the music. This single includes the radio edit, two mixes and the extended/video version, which is not available in the album, I think it's the best version of "Fallen", you also get the Enhanced CD Video, you can choose between a high resolution or low resolution videos, obviously, the high resolution video is the one with the better image and sound quality. A year and a half after its release, this single is no longer available in stores so you're only chance to get it is here through Amazon.com. Enjoy it!

    "Fallen" is the second single from Mya's "Moodring" album. The first was the big hit single "My Love Is like...Wo!" "Fallen" is a catchy piece of urban pop and is a great single. It also has a great video too. I highly recommend this.

    "Fallen" is the second single of her latest cd "Moodring". In this single you'll find the album's version plus 3 remixes and the song's video.
    The video is very good, it has a remix and Mya appears gorgeous.
    If you like Mya buy this single it's very good and the price is also very good.
    I'll also recommend the import single of her first single "My love is like...wo" which reached #13 in the Billboard's Hot 100 and it also includes the video. When I say to buy the import version it's because it has the video. The american version doesn't include the video.

    This is the oldest available CD featuring Michael Posch and Thomas Wimmer. They go on to become members of Accentus/Oni Wytars/Unicorn, easily the most formidable early music instrumental ensemble in existence. Here, their skills certainly aren't what they'll become. But even amid their slightly hesitant and unrefined playing, their phenomenal musical spirit shines through. Thomas Wimmer is the only early musician I've heard who can sound so compelling with so little technique! I wouldn't recommend this CD as authentic Sephardic music (which isn't verifiably medieval), but it's a welcome addition to any collection solely on the basis of its engaged arrangements and presentation.
