BT's velvety take on trance techno, typified by unusually light, liquidy melodies, smooth edges, and roomy breakbeats, was first noticed in the U.S. via his exceptional remix of Tori Amos's "Blue Skies." That song and other like-minded U.K. singles that preceded it gave rise to yet another variation of trance music dubbed "dream-trance." It's an apt label. BT's dense, yet straightforward compositions and benevolent mixes incorporate themes of escape and rebirth, with songs that imprint themselves on your subconscious. On Movement in Still Life, never before available in the States, BT breaks through the wall that separates techno from out-and-out pop, incorporating verse-chorus-verse song structures. Furthermore, he allows his dreamy mix to wander into Fatboy Slim-esque big beat territory. As a DJ, he's clearly capable of branching into different styles. The smart house and choppy beats of the title track make that apparent. He's still playing with needles and wax on that track, though; "Shame," with its acoustic drum/guitar sound and accessible pop vocal track sounds ready-made for alt-rock radio, with only touches around the edges that betray the presence of a DJ. Other songs, such as "Running Down the Way," blend the two styles more evenly, utilizing a pop song format but keeping it clubby and decidedly nonacoustic. Given BT's U.S. success with the pop/club mix of "Blue Skies," as well as the accessible, anthemic style he tends to favor as a DJ, the record makes perfect stylistic sense. He'd be wise, however, to keep dream-trance close to his turntables, as the perfection of such tracks as "Dreaming" and "Godspeed" make it blissfully obvious that he has utterly mastered the sound. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

3 out of 5 stars BT is excellent. This version of MiSL is not........2007-02-17

Short version: The track selection and mixing on the UK version makes it the best BT album ever, in my humble opinion. The subpar selection of tracks, as well as the random placement of tracks and lack of mixing, make the USA version less than it ought to be.

Long version: I rank MiSL beside Hybrid's Wide Angle in terms of complexity, originality, composition, mood, and just plain groove. It is very obvious that BT lives and breathes music, and that he has been well-educated in the ways of his craft. However, I would not have bought this album had I not heard the UK version. The UK release of MiSL by BT is an EDM classic. This... thing that was given to us in the USA is a crime against the man's reputation. The seamless mixing that would make any DJ jealous is totally absent. Instead, each track just slams in or creeps up shyly. The songs are not bad, but they are not nearly as good as the selections featured on the UK release. On the UK version, there is not a bad song. On such mediocre fare as "Never Gonna Come Back Down", we are treated to a barely bearable voice spitting out very bad freestyle. The track would have been better if BT had not let some fool sing over it. While some of the USA-only titles are not bad (Smartbomb, for example), I would gladly trade all of them for "Giving up the Ghost" alone.

All in all, I would not recommend buying this item. The UK version, believe it or not, really is worth the $40 when compared to the USA version. They both make me cry, but for totally different reasons.

5 out of 5 stars Genre defining.......2006-05-13

I'm not going to write a tediously long review. I'm a professional musician. This is a record you need to hear. You will meet people that will dislike it. Regardless, this is one of those records that permanently changed the scene. You might not like it but if you care at all about the history/evolution of popular electronic music you need to know this record. The influence of this album from the very subtle to the drastic is apparent in nearly every meaningful breaks album since. I could go on and on about minor technical flaws and even more minor artistic flaws but it would all be academic. Educate your brain... and maybe at the same time you'll be fantastically entertained.

5 out of 5 stars BT has some MADSKILLZ.......2004-12-28

"Madskillz" being the opening song on this collection of dance infused anthems, I thought that this was going to be another one of those DJ albums where substance was sacrificed for sound. Fortunatley, "Never Gonna Come Back Down" was next and while it really made no sense at all, it still held my attention with its no nonsense approach. I love the song "Dreaming" because it starts off with the hint of being a lullaby like ballad but evolves smoothly into a trance like forray of beats and melodies. "Shame" has the sound of Depeche Mode written all over it and that influence makes the song so much more likable. The title cut is decent but kind of like "Madskillz" and BT just blows me away with "Satellite" a soft, accoustic driven song that has some rather depresing undertones. What I find interesting about this collection is many of the songs read like poetry and are emotionally expresive. Both "Godspeed" and "Smartbomb" have been featured in movie soundtracks and after listening to them, it is no shock as to why. This album is one of the best DJ albums out there and it delivers the goods without very many disapointments!

5 out of 5 stars A trip you will never come back down from........2004-11-27

Let me put it this way: If I were to be stranded on an island, with a CD player, and batteries grew on the trees there, and was only allowed to bring five CDs with me, two of them would be "Movement In Still Life".
Yep, I said two.
Some goof decided to release this album twice with slightly different versions of the same songs, and put a couple of SLAMMING tracks exclusively on each one. "Namistai" and "Giving Up The Ghost", 2 of my favorite tracks on the yellow cover version, have been conveniently left off the BT cover version. Vice versa with the best track out of both versions in my opinion, the almighty "Smartbomb". Not to mention the yellow cover version is a continuous mix of tracks, while the other version has each track separated by a couple of seconds of agonizing silence. When I love every single track(and I mean that) on an album, I want the experience to be a never-ending trip. What good is getting laid if you're stopping every 5 minutes?
I didn't care much for Ima, ESCM was fantastic, and Emotional Technology, his next full album after MISL, was nice, but none of them compares to MISL. EITHER version. So I say, if you have the dough and can find both versions, get them. It's worth it.
BT is a classically trained musician, and it shows most of all on this album. This is far from the "bum-sss-bum-sss-bum-sss-bum-sss" drivel. This is driving, soothing, peaceful and violent all at the same time, with beats that will nod your head straight off your shoulders, and melodies that twist, turn, and groove. Songs you can cruise to ("Love on Haight Street"), pop-lock to (title track - watch for that funky-ass break!), or put the moves on that first date to ("Satellite") - and while that may sound like your average pop album (keep in mind BT DID do a track for N'Sync's "Celebrity" album, called "Pop"), once you listen, you realize - BT cannot come wack with his music. It's damn near impossible. Vocals - meh, those could use some work, but the music is that good, I don't care about the vocals. Most of these songs could work on a movie soundtrack or commercial, as well.
To put it quite simply BT/Dance=Dr. Dre/Rap. Both know their craft, and can crank out a hit on a whim. It's a shame this album wasn't promoted more, but that makes it all the more a gem. If you like dance music that's not just for dancing, don't sleep. If you want an introduction to BT, don't sleep. And if you like this album, and want to hear more, try "Emotional Technology", an album that's not quite as good, but is closer in style than say, ESCM, an album from which BT seemed to begin his evolution from Enigma to who he is today.
An amazing album.

5 out of 5 stars The man's clearly got ADHD, but maybe that's a good thing........2004-06-20

BT's third album, Movement In Still Life (MISL), is about as cohesive and flowing as... well, it's just not cohesive and flowing. Almost every track seems to have its own flavor, its own style, as if they had been pulled from different CDs themselves and thrown together by somebody with a CD burner. There's no intermixing between them, there's no real "sonic path," or building of the album (ie, soft songs at first, then faster songs following). However, MISL is probably one of the finest albums every produced from any genre of music.

Breaks, trance, rock, pop... Everything comes together on this album. Each track, as mentioned before, has its own particular twist on a genre. Madskillz-Mic Chekka opens the album with a slick nu-breaks feel. Godspeed fills in for the classic Flaming June, confirming BT's place in trance / house history. Never Gonna Come Back Down, featuring Soul Coughing's M. Doughty, takes a pop-ish spin on BT's talents, while Shame and Satellite offer more of a soft rock / ballad one. Smartbomb drops BT into big beat territory, offering respectable competition for the likes of Fluke and The Crystal Method. Love On Haight Street offers the vocal talents of underground MCs Rasco and Fifty Grand. While most of BT's fans are probably club-happy trancers who'll detest the track, it isn't without its own good qualities, and shows more creativity in one song than than all of hip-hop has seen in years. The album really hits its apex with Dreaming, which combines one of Kirsty Hawkshaw's best vocal performances with the perfect synthesis of nu-breaks and trance.

Most die-hard electronica fans will prefer the import version of MISL. With great tracks like Fibonacci Sequence, Giving Up The Ghost, the BT and Paul van Dyk joint-collaboration Namistai (all three are sadly missing from the US version), it's a more "classic BT" sounding edition, with a more electronic and subtly mixed feel (though it also has the truly awful track Ride, but I suppose nothing is perfect). All that said, the US version of MISL still remains a fantastic album. It's less genre focused than the import version, but is arguably a more ambitious and creative effort. I personally own both, and find both possessing of their own merits. If you can, get both. If you can't and are more electronically inclined, get the import version. If you prefer a bit more diversity, however, and are interested in seeing one artist's vision of what several genres should sound like, then don't hesitate to pick up this classic disc.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2007-05-01

I discovered BT and his music a month ago, and purchased the album "emotional technology". I enjoyed it but was a little dissapointed. But it (emotional technology) still made me a new fan. After reading the reviews and listening to samples for the imported movement in still life, I had to get my hands on it. This cd is about as close to perfection as they come. Every track was amazing, and you can tell BT had a lot of fun with the first 4 tracks! Another great aspect of the album is the transitioning of the genres of music. It starts out with some crazy break beat tracks, moves into progressive trance territory, crescendos and brings you down slowly with tracks 10 and 11. Very well done... Don't contemplate any longer on wether or not to buy this album. Get it now you won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Leaves You Motionless While Your Mind Races Out Of Control!!.......2006-11-22

If you've listened to enough trance mixes you may already be familiar with BT. For example: BT's Godspeed and Dreaming are featured in some of Dj Micro's mixes ( Dj Mixed & Micro-Tech Mix 2.0 ). If you can recall, these tracks have been more than entrancing. This CD contains the whole package including those two amazing tracks and the other featured tracks in this mix is incredible! It is difficult to make a decision off the bat whether or not to get this CD since Amazon doesn't have a preview feature. But trust me, I took the plunge based on the reviews alone and I couldn't have been more pleased.

Here is a breakdown of some tracks on the CD:

1.) Movement In Still Life - This track is the intro to the CD and starts off with a skit phone call, with some guy (who sounds like some beat junky) talking, saying he wants to make some fresh hits. It's funny because he says to call him back @ his mom's house and if he's at his grandmas, call his pager. As cheezy as this sounds Track 1 quickly transitions into some hard hitting beats with a nice Urban B-Boy feel to it. 10/10

6.) Dreaming - This is a nice track. It starts out a little slow and gradually brings you back up to speed. This track features vocals by Kristy Hawkshaw whos voice is very soothing. Some insight to some of the lyrics included in the chorus are: "No words no talk, We'll go Dreaming; No Pain no hurt, We'll go Dreaming." Near the end of track the vocals reverb and fade into some motivating beats. 9/10

7.) Giving Up The Ghost - This track follows the previous track almost by suit and carries the same trance beat with some new sounds and synthesizers. Since this CD is a continous mix, I believe this track was included to support the next selection. Whether or not that's fact, the transition between these two tracks ( 7 & 8 ) are very tasteful. 8/10

8.) Godspeed - Here is where you want to turn up the volume, adjust your highs and lows, turn the bass down a few notches so the deep base on this track doesn't drown out the inspirational feel. As this track spins above the lasers of your CD player, the ground beneath you feet seems to vanish and leave you in suspense. The enticing female vocal quivers elate your senses and unexpected booms and repercussions of the base send you freefalling, landing within the tides of machine beats sending you to a far away corner of your brain so you can TRANCE OUT. I give this one an amazing 10/10.

10.) Running Down the Way Up - This is one of my favorite selections. This track starts out with an acoustic guitar interlude for about 20-30 seconds, then some attractive female vocals come to the forefront. The vocals really set the scene and are heard throughout the the entire track. What makes these vocals all the more appealing, the begining vocals are whiped with exotic reverbs and channel mixing which make this track what some refer to as "ear candy". Then the excitement ends with impressive electric guitar rifts and licks. I classify this one a 10/10.

5 out of 5 stars A dance essential.......2005-05-09

This is the best of BT,extremely hard to find in stores...but you must get the much better, import version.American dj,BT makes some of the world's best dance music by combining techno with trance. The current BT is different from the "old skool"stuff like this. This album is full of energy and will keep you begging for more.Ya gotta have this one

5 out of 5 stars BT's finest hour. A true classic........2004-10-25

In the genre of electronica, there are just a few powerhouse albums that everyone should own. Fluke's Risotto. Paul van Dyk's Seven Ways. Hybrid's Morning Sci-Fi. And BT's Movement In Still Life.

MISL is BT at his apex. Emotional Technology, his latest album, is more technically proficient; the mixing, the production qualities, the sheer technology are superior in every way. But what ET lacks is the utterly magnificent writing of MISL. With the sole exception of the funky, but utterly atrocious Ride, every single track on MISL is a classic. Hip-Hop Phenomenon and Madskillz-Mic Chekka kick up the bass with their nu-breaks beats and old-school hip-hop feel. Running Down The Way up combines the breezy style of pop with a killer groove and beat provided by Hybrid's Mike Truman. Satellite closes the album with emotion and a soft, touching feeling. But it's the trancer's that truly flourish on this album. Mercury & Solace, Giving Up The Ghost, Namistai (an awesome joint venture between BT and Paul van Dyk), Godspeed, and of course, Dreaming, truly make MISL the incredible album that it is. Every single one of these tracks is damn near perfect, and having all of them on one disc is nothing short of amazing, and a reminder that nobody does it better than BT.

As I'm running out of adjectives to describe this fantastic disc, I'll call it quits here. Movement In Still Life is of the best CDs I have ever heard, bought, or listened to for year after year. It's a classic in every sense of the word, and remains BT's best hour.

5 out of 5 stars One of BT's best, Import version is superior..........2004-05-18

I own both the Import and US versions of MISL, and I must say that this version (Import, yellow cover) is by far the superior of the two. I have written a review of the US version hoping to point people to get this version instead :) You can see what I think about it there. But overall, this is probably BT's best album so far. Emotional Technology is real good and I love it, but I have a weak spot for his trancey beats, which is used in full effect on this album. It's a great mix of breakbeat, full-on trance, dream house, and chillout tracks, and BT in his classic fashion sequences and mixes the track seamlessly, beautifully even. The version of Godspeed in this album is the best I've heard so far.

I heard that there is a 2-CD version of this album which includes bonus tracks and remixes, would love to get my hands of them if I can find it.

I just want to close off by saying that many people (including so-called 'dance music experts') call BT a DJ. While it's easy to think that way given BT's choice of music, BT as far as I know is the God of all electronic music producers, but he is NOT a DJ. Maybe by the time you read this he is learning to spin the wheelz of steel, but for now, I hope people give him the respect he deserves as a top-rate producer and not label him as a DJ simply because of the type of music he makes :) (No disrecpect to DJs cos I'm an aspiring DJ myself :P)

Enjoy!

Get this and you wont be sorry

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate CD for Electronic Music.......2004-07-28

This CD will always be in my collection for years to come. Get your hands on the Limited Asia release edition that features tons of tracks in two CDs. I was lucky to obtain this Avex Trax Pioneer CD in Asia the moment it came out in 1999. Here I am still listening to it and comparing the album to other DJs. For example BT started the style of introducing the track with an audio grab from his answering machine. Fast forward to 2004 and Paul Okenfold's Perfecto Chills Vol. 2 features the same style in track 2 of the album. Another example is the general style of breaking down the tracks and remixing the vocals and instruments like a particle wave effect. This is what BT is known for and I heard a similar style in Sasha's latest album - Involver also in 2004. That's five years later and this is how much impact this album has been in the electronic/DJ industry.

This release contains two discs. The first disc is the normal album, while the second contains almost all the songs in the first track but remixed. The transition and organziation between tracks in nearly flawless.

Only here can you find great vocal artists in one album - Jan Johnston and Kirsty Hawkshaw. And features other DJs such as Sasha and Paul Van Dyk. A feat that was attempted once more with DJ Tiesto's "In My Memory" album in 2001.

The best tracks for me is "Dreaming", "Running Down The Way Up" and the great transition to "Satellite."

BT makes great tracks, but I doubt he will ever able to recreate the feel of this album - as evidence in his other album releases after this. Get this album while you still can.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST CD EVER MADE. FOR REAL!.......2002-09-19

This CD is nothing short of Brilliant. Captivating. Atoshpheric.
Emotional. BT is a production genius. You must buy this CD!
After I bought it, I listened to it 4 times in a row before tuning it off. It is jam-packed with slickness- the sickest beats ever. There is not one song I dont like. An album like this comes along once in a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars This album is awesome.......2001-02-28

I listened to an import version of this CD for about a year two years ago. I loved it and decided to buy it after I came back to wanting to listen to it again. This album in very simple words is outstanding. My favorite tracks are Dreaming (sweet voice) and Giving Up the Ghost (I love the way it's built up). I would recommend that you buy it but if you don't want to spend all this money for the import version, then buy the US version for much cheaper. I am into a wide variety of music but this one stands among my favorites.

    5 out of 5 stars 3rd Times A Charm.......2005-07-25

Movement in Still Life is American Electronic Producer BT aka Brian Transeau's 3rd Artist Album and is the first album for him to break from simply producing trance. This is the first album to show BT's love for all types of electronic music, and while it still has one or two massive trance anthems (Mercury and Solace) this cd drops in some of the funkiest and illest breaks to ever be produced (check Madskillz/Mic Chekka). Although true trance fans may dislike this album, especially compared to IMA, BT's first artist album, for its foray into other genres, any true EDM fan will love this album for the fat beats and quality production. This album is also a must have for any true raver/clubber because the chances are that you grooved to at least on track on this album sometime during your life. For those who are simply interested in good music or experiencing a foray into a new genre/subgenre this album will again hit the spot. Finally, this is the defining album for the electronic masses during the millenial period of 1999-2001 with tracks dropped world wide by bedroom dj's and superstars alike. An album not to be missed by one of the worlds formost artist in electronic music.

    5 out of 5 stars score!.......2002-12-05

bt is a british house-trance dj with THE most originality and melodic (and pounding...the music bumps my single-cab f-150) techno music I've heard. bt produced the soundtrack and placed some of his own music in the movie "the fast and the furious." great songs...also check out the domestic version (import..depending where you are from) of "movement in still life." the songs on there are the original ones. I'll knock your socks off, literally!

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Frisky.......2000-08-08

This cd is great to listen to because of it's wounderful use of rythms and sounds. I love to dance to this and just have it playing when there's nothing better to do. It makes you want to move no matter who you are.

5 out of 5 stars Do Not buy the American version.......2005-01-26

If you are considering purchasing MISL, it is more than worth the import price to get an imported version, rather than the american release. This particular version is the one I have. The album is megamixed; that is, all of the tracks flow together creating an unbroken journey through the whole album. The previous two albums both have this feature as well. The american release is not only chopped up into seperate songs, but all of them have been drastically shortened from their full lengths, which you get with this import. In fact, disc two of this set has the extended versions of many of the album's songs.
Also, the songs "Ride," "The Hip Hop Phenomenon," "Giving Up the Ghost," and "Namastai" were removed for the american release in favor of "Never Gonna Come Back Down," "Shame," "Smartbomb," and "Love on Haight St." Ride is kind of an extended groove number, similar to "Orbitus Terranium" from ESCM in that sense, but less trancy. "The Hip Hop Phenomenon" is anything but hip-hop. Trip-hop, maybe. It has very danceable beat with some very cool atmospheric material on top, which all grows in energy and danceability as the song progresses. "Giving Up the Ghost" is also very danceable, and is full of haunting, catchy melodic sequences and motives that will repeat in your head and keep you wanting to hear the track over and over. "Namastai" is simply gorgeous. Certainly one of best tracks on the cd. It is a superior example of modern trance/techno, and I don't understand how it could have been omitted from the american release. Any one of these four tracks is better than all of the four alternatives found on the american release, in my opinion. Then again, I am a hard trance/techno fan, and am less attracted to commercial pop culture, which seems to have had an influence on things like "Smartbomb" or "Love on Haight street."
All things considered, the import versions of MISL have many characteristics that make them far superior to the american release and more than worth the import price.

3 out of 5 stars I was disappointed but you might like it.......2002-08-10

I was really looking forward to this CD, but ultimately, I prefer BT's songs when blended in to other works like Tiesto's Searching for Sunrise. But hey, you might like it... if you want to shell the money... I say the import is simply not worth it. Save a few bucks and buy the US version.

4 out of 5 stars 'And the light that brings the living...is burning my eyes'.......2001-12-18

First of all, there are two versions of Bt's 'Movement in Still Life' one can purchase on Amazon: this, the (original) import version, and the US release, which is clipped, disorganized, and replaces several nice trance tracks for mediocre faux-folk numbers. The choice is simple and obvious; the suits who butchered this album should be hung up by their toenails and forced to listen to Coltrain, Bach, Zappa et al until the Britney programming is thoroughly removed from their aural memory.

Hailing from Washington D.C., Brian Transeau broke into the exclusive European progressive-trance scene with his 1996 masterpiece Ima (Japanese for Now), which took the standard cliches of the genre and reshaped them into tunes of pure passion. The 1998 follow-up, ESCM, both improved on Ima and vividly displayed BT's shortcomings, those being a penchant for cheesiness and overuse of certain electronic themes. Movement in Still Life, BT's third artist album, features these same flaws sandwiched with some of the man's best work to date.

MiSL begins with several hip-hop influenced breakbeat tracks that segue together well and, overall, create a nice party atmosphere. Around the 20 minute mark the fluttering chords of 'mercury and solace' floats through the 3/4 rhythms; intricate trance and happy progressive dominate hereafter, the best of which--'Godspeed,' 'Namastai'--burn bright and long. Not all is brilliant, however: 'Dreaming', unfortunately, stretches its (rather thin) concept to the brink.

A collaboration with Hybrid, 'Running the Way down Up' serves a potent climax to MiSL, and after the breaks have faded and a distorted guitar shudders in the distance, the forlorn hope of 'Satellite' comes chiming in for appropriate conclusion--sheer bliss--Bt's voice works well to serve its earnest/melancholic paradox.

Four stars--not everything works as it should--but certainly a worth addition to any music-lover's library. Next up for Bt: Still Life in Motion.

    5 out of 5 stars very nice........2001-11-28

ever since i got a hold of renaisance worldwide: singapore {which is a very hard to find now 3 disc, 1. mixed by david morales 2. mixed by dave seaman 3. mixed by BT, album} i've really respected both dave seaman and BT. since this is a BT album review i'll limit my praise to him.

......all that nonsense being said i'm left with only one real comment to make regarding this 2 disc album:

    awesome.

5 out of 5 stars ohhhh so great!.......2000-11-02

BT is the epitome of trance..his creations are beyond good; they are great. i fell in love with BT when i heard "Flaming June" which is still by far my favorite tune. After Flaming, I just knew that I had to own everything that BT creates. "Dreaming" is steller, but I have to say that "Satellite" was the song that blew me away. Who knew BT would put such a refreshing and unique track on this CD. I really recommend this album (imports only) especially to those who are new to trance. I guarantee that if you listen to this album, you would not want to listen to anything else but trance, especially trance mixed or produced by the master trance producer himself, BT!!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Satellite.......2005-01-12

"Satellite" is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It is evocative, melancholy and yet hopeful. From the inital seconds of the song, I felt transported into a soundscape of emotion and thought. This version of the song, which is longer than the one on the American release of MISL, closes what is a varied, thought-out, and masterful album.

The first track might make you laugh at the audacity of the person leaving a message on BT's answering machine. "Ride" stinks, but hey. "Madskillz" was featured in "Zoolander", so it might ring some bells. It's a good driving/blaring song. "Hip Hop Phenomenon" shows BT's "breaks", but they don't save this relatively boring song. "Mercury and Solace" features Jan Johnston, a longtime vocal contributor to BT's work. Although not their best pairing ("Lullaby for Gaia"), this song is beautiful electronic music that has structure and substance. This mix of "Dreaming" is over nine minutes long, which is just another way in which this release of MISL is superior to the US release. "Giving up the Ghost", as a song, doesn't rise to the same standard as "Dreaming", but it is catchy trance music nonetheless and could very well get you to dance. "Godspeed" is just ridiculously good. It's trance, but it's so accessible. You also get a taste of real BT on this one, so listen for the stutter edits and overall gritty feel of his trance. "Namaste" follows suit. I wish it weren't right next to "Godspeed", as they are similar, but it's an instrumental trance-electro-pop nugget of enjoyable listening with a moody, light piano line. "Running Down the Way up" signals the beginning of the end of the record with its deep bass, acoustic guitar, and stutter-edited vocal. "Satellite" drops like a bomb.

This is BT's best album, as it mixes his pop tendencies with his trance. If you can appreciate musical proficiency, danceable beats and evocative songs, then you will enjoy this album. I own the US release as well, and this is worth the extra money. The tracks on the US version can be acquired by other means. "Never Gonna Come Back Down" is on this album's second disc anyway, and "Shame" and "Smartbomb" can be purchased separately. "Love on Haight Street" isn't any good.

3 out of 5 stars Keepin it real; 3 stars.......2002-08-05

It's good, and too bad there's no promo tunes. My best description is acid, loungy, with a little techno and some good vocals to boot. Those are pretty rare together, and almost anybody would probably enjoy this. If your like me, you will grab 6-8 songs from these disks that are played as background music when people are over.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING IN ALL LEVELS.......2001-12-03

To start off, I would give this CD 10 stars if I could--and I truely mean that without any sense of exageration. This CD pulls you through a emotive ride in lush landscapes. ESCM was much more deep and ambient in that the music was slow and spoke to your soul--the difference with MSL is that it acccomplishes that with a lesser degree, but it has MUCH more of a trance beat to it. As to where with ESCM, you could only dance to a few beats, with MSL, you can to nearly all. This version amazingly outshines its US version counterpart which is filled with (...). Buy this CD, and let it change your life (ok, well....not that far)

5 out of 5 stars The "Movement In Still Life" Movement.......2001-10-04

BT aka Brian Transeau really makes my day and night when I pop this record in my stereo. A beautiful masterpiece featuring collaborations with Kirsty Hawkshaw, DJ Rap, Jan Johnston, Michael Doughty, Paul Van Dyk and Hybrid, this CD should be a must in everybody's collection. (The bonus disc rewards you with the special and rare Libra remix of Dreaming).

BT is really talented. Written, composed and engineered by BT, Movement In Still Life is really a state of the art electronic invention.

Try it...SUPERB PRO-TOOLED AURAL PLEASURE IN STEREO.

5 out of 5 stars You're dumb if you don't buy this cd!!!!.......2001-07-20

To put it simply, this is the best electronica cd you can buy. BT: MISL is a much different album when compared to his earlier works but it still contains the same feel BT is known for, with a few added twists put in for good measure (Madskillz, The Hip Hop Phenomenom). But it's the trance songs that really show that BT has mastered the sound of electronica, with a truly psykidelic sound that was previously only heard by JUNO REACTOR (Dreaming is just the best song ever!!!!). If you're a fan of dance music, you HAVE to buy this album! Even if you're not a fan of dance music you owe it to yourself to buy this musical masterpiece! BT IS THE GOD OF ELECTRONICA!!!!!!
