Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The MixMag Live was the world's first ever legitimate DJ mix series, it showcased the talents of the world's leading DJs such as Carl Cox, Sasha, Masters at Work, Dimitri from Paris, LTJ Bukem and many more. The series is now back, with fresh sounds from Max Graham.
Max is indeed the future, and is has already become a worldwide success in a short period of time. His name is already known to just about anyone who appreciates good music composed with passion and talent, and his style and creativity are setting a solid example in the global dance music culture. Max made an impression with Paul Oakenfold who insisted Max became resident at Gatecrasher and his own Perfecto nights at clubbing capital Ibiza.

Book'em Dano.......2006-03-06
I'm diggin' the "Hawaii Five-O" intro. This album introduced me to the smooth sounds of Drum N Bass. I've bought 5 copies of this album. This was before I had a CD burner to make back-up copies of my music, but thats how much I like it. Ever since this mixed CD I have keeped up with all of the LTJ Bukem projects. If you don't know, know you know!!!
A must have........2005-08-05
To my mind, this is the best work that LTJ Bukem has released and probably will ever release. I remember when I was first introduced to this album back in 1996. Little did I know how much of a profound effect that Mixmag volume 3 would have had on me. Back then, I was still relatively new to the genre of drum & bass and I have to say that this album spoiled me in the worst way possible. Since listening, I have used this album as my benchmark for what quality drum & bass should sound like and I am sorry to say that not many such songs/albums/compilations have come near to this high standard that LTJ Bukem has set. Mixmag volume 3 is much more than a simple compilation as it possesses the ability to either calm you down and centre you if you want to study, or it can hype you up and make you rather excited before heading to a club. It takes you on a sweet and peaceful aurally imaginative journey no matter how many times you listen to it. The selection of the songs based mainly on deep rolling basslines, complex beat patterns and a melodic twist make this album irresistable and among the best put together I have seen in a while. Pure electro-percussive ear candy at many beats per minute. Never have I come across music that can serve a dual purpose at the whim of your deciding how you want it to make you feel. To any discerning conoceur of drum & bass and to anyone starting to discover the genre, this album is for you as it represents one of the greatest achievements from one of the most influential players in the industry. An excellent work of art.
You Gotta Have This C.D.!.......2002-09-09
I first heard this way back in the day when it first surfaced, and it was my first drum and bass/jungle expierience. Its one of those cd's that never leaves your head and you always go back to listen to it. If you are having a bad day, pop this in your headphones, lay back, relax, enjoy a fattie, and it will melt your stress away! well done Bukem!
Jungle Magic.......2001-12-05
Anyone who is looking for the best ever jungle album look no further. This is it!! Bukem isn't always known for getting this trippy and strays away from the strength of his crisp drum and bass methods to deliver a liquid splash of master breaks! Bottom line is that this is a must have for any jungle fan.

Max Graham Vs Yes.......2006-08-01
Max Gived something new in "Owner of a lonely heart"
But after that Track, "I Know you are gone" need to improve, cause look likes State of trance 2005 - Armin.
4 stars is probably a little generous.......2005-12-17
The reason I say that 4 stars is generous is because this mix is clouded with vocal tracks. Everyone likes vocal tracks but not to this extreme. The end of the album turns into a vocal collage. When mixing an album a key to it is to place the vocal tracks so that they have the most impact on the listener, when a listener hears 3, 4, 5 vocal tracks in a row they grow immune to the surprise of them even coming and they lose validity. Although the setlist is great, and there are some great instrumentals in the beginning this is by far the worst release to date by Max Graham who has seem to go pop on us. Although his mix of Yes's Owner of a Lonely Heart with alltime great trance song by Protegy "Smack my Bitch UP" is a superb single this mix is smothered in mixing errors. Max Graham also brought back his great single "I know your gone" which is a great song, but anybody who has heard Armin V. B. or Markus Schulz has already heard this version and might find it kind of bland. The best song I thought was Steve Lawler's mix of Bomb Dogs "I can't expain" which is great because of the awesome drums that only Steve can bring to the table. The intro was also interesting and had me thinking this mix was going to be alot different then it was, but as you will see he quickly goes away from this sound (sounds like a film noir, very creepy). Well to the best of my knowledge that is what I heard from this album. Just trying to put a review out there, and know that Max Graham will rebound from this set, he is very talented and one of the top 10 djs.

It's hard to argue with super-stylin' French DJ Dimitri from Paris. Between selling a couple hundred thousand of his debut, Sacrebleu, and then scoring hot and heavy with 2000's A Night at the Playboy Mansion and the three-disc workout Disco Forever, Turkish-born Dimitri seems to only spin gold, and House of Funk is no exception. Recorded originally in 1997 as a compilation for Mixmag magazine, the CD does have its rough spots, but even as a colorless house beat pile-drives the party right up to Mondo Grosso's "Vibe PM," Dimitri's skill in weaving disco strings and horny vocals together with unique tracks makes it all work like a charm. Per usual for him, Dimitri goes further than the average ignorant and insular DJ in finding his mix material. Forget spinning another house track from another unknown "producer," Dimitri blends '80s funk, Latin rhythms, Algerian Rai, new disco, and electro-pop under his beat-heavy banner. Bob Sinclar, Björk, Brand New Heavies, and Cheb Khaled (as well as unknowns Teddy G and Switchblade Sisters) all receive the Dimitri treatment, losing their identity to his in the process. Equal parts sentimental disco cheesemeister and crafty beat-matching style explorer, Dimitri from Paris invites you to shake it under his world-class mirror ball. --Ken Micallef
Customer Reviews:
i love this album.......2001-12-24
I bought this cd a few years ag- when it came out. Unfortunately I lost it, but I quickly bought it the next day. I put this on when i am getting ready to go out, clean my apartment, chill, talk on the phone, go running- I guess I listen to it a lot. I just love it. I love house music anyway, and this album is a bit disco- but not too much. If you like daft punk, air, modjo, mark farina, armand van helden or peter heller- you definately like this!!
It must be a French thing..........1999-12-07
The mixing is tight and most of the tracks keep a feel of rolling deep. This is a late night groove that kicks off house touched with jazz. Eventually the groove turns to those housey breaks under jazz for a track or so. My only problems were that no matter how I tried, I couldn't kick enough bass under the tracks. Also I question a few of the track selections. I realize the 'Sometimes' track is his mix, but better mixes are out. The Bjork rant boarders on annoying at certian hours and mindframes. In American terms, this tape could be mistaken for San Fransico house. However, I suspect Monsieur Dimitri hasn't really spent quality time in Chicago. That said, this is the best house mix by a non-American I've heard in 7 years of house devotion.
Try not moving to this one!.......1999-12-06
No matter what type of musical backgroud your friends have, they will be dying to find out where you got this CD; it's awsome! Ultra-funky beats and basslines compiled with enriching, melodious samples make this CD above all others. The transitions are perfectly timed, leaving a style long enough to completely enjoy but without getting repetitive. It's electronic, but not enough to turn people off. I've haven't heard any other cd that comes close to it. But be careful... This CD will make you MOVE, whether you wanted to or not!
Its cool; Sacrebleu is now available in US Get it Amazon!.......1999-11-25
This is a funky cool cd. Good to move around to. Solves your problem if you need to figure out what to play at a party that will keep the club kids happy but won't offend others. Even better in this regard is Dimitri's Sacrebleu now available in the US as a domestic! Amazon, get it on your site, kids.
Sweeet........1999-11-17
Groovy. Thats the only word to describe this fantastique record. Go and buy it. You wont be disapponted.

Bouncy and Groovy.......2003-05-20
Superb party music that always has me bouncing around.
Positive vibe and freaky music which is what I think house music is about. Now I got to get another copy because mine is all weared out. Although it might sound dated now, it's still a great release in my opinion. Awesome track selection and truly unbelievable
mixing! Can't we get a Cosmic Disco Part II please !!!
I wanted to like it, but sadly this one comes up a short!.......2003-05-16
I still to this day go see Derrick spinning records as much as humanly possible (and I'm getting up there in years!), but this simply wasn't his greatest effort. Any of his old mix tapes far surpass this mix, so if this CD is your only exposure to Derrick Carter, you are not gettin' the goods!
Derrick Carter is truly an artist and the best live venue DJ going. Do yourself a favor and see him live sometime in Chicago!
Derrick is the best around.......2000-07-15
With Derrick Carter's mixes, the boundaries between songs vanish. The man mixes two records for a looong time -- one providing the bang, the other the swing. Vocals, horns, basslines and pianos flit in and out of the mix, and unless you own the vinyl yourself, it takes a long time to figure out where it's all coming from.
There are DJs who are a little cleaner than Derrick (not many), but none who are more inventive and ambitious. He's putting together a symphony made out of wacked-out house music.
I'd say the previous reviewer was mistaken: this CD is a pale imitation of bootleg tapes that are out there. That being said, chances are good that this will be the best mix CD you own.
If you aren't impressed with Derrick Carter, you just don't know house music. I can't wait for another CD release so I can enjoy being blown away all over again.

This cd is a true representation of Derrick. Those of you unable to get ahold of the countless bootleged live sets can take heart with this one. Unlike the 'Many Shades of Cajual' release of years back, this one lets Derrick choose from spectrum of music, not limited to a specific label as some DJ cd require. While nothing equals seeing the master live, this cd does equal tapes that often float around. The songs are 3 years old now, but Derrick (and Chicago) has always been about 3 years ahead of Mainstream trends (and they both ALWAYS set the trend!)

Customer Reviews:
This is one of the greatest albums of all-time.......2006-03-06
In my opinion of course, but I'm sure there are people who will agree with me. This is the album that turned me on to Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman. It is a mind-blowing minimalistic electric journey into early detriot techno. This is the sound of the early 90's.
This is definitely in the top 3 mixes ever..........2005-01-04
FIND THIS CD IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY!! This is a definite classic...no matter how much time passes, it's still refreshing, bold, and kicks a lot of other mixes out of the water. Along with LTJ Bukem's "Progression Sessions vol. 1" and Danny Tenaglia's "GU Athens", this is definitely at the top in the all-time top of electronic music mixes.
GET IT!
SO good it will give you chills.......2004-01-20
A gift for all of your senses. The most brilliant live piece of work behind turntables to date, no contest. Richie takes minimal techno to you whether you like it or not... and you will. To put it simply, this set is an adequate substitute for almost any drug. It really is that good.
For those of you who have seen Richie live, I only say this... GET IT NOW.
As for the rest of you, this is a rightful introduction into minimal techno. Why not start with the best effort by the best DJ?
Ultimate Classic!.......2000-06-02
Richie has once again dilivered a flawless mix. Even more incredible, It's live! His selection is the deepest and most unpresidented of "Minimal Techno". Most of his albums are very deep and extremely minimal. But his mixes take you to places you could not even imagine. In my view, it is his best work to date. Remember if Richie is in your city check him out, he is truelly unparrallel.
ALL RAVERS- BUY THIS- AND TRIP OUT!.......1999-10-11
IF YOU LOVE TO DANCE AND CHILL OUT IN TRANCE THEN POURCHASE THIS CD. THERE ARE OTHER GREAT CDS BY THIS DJ. I SUGGEST ANYTHING BY PLASTIKMAN IS WORTH A TRY. I MYSELF BEING A RAVER HAVE THIS TITLE AND MANY OTHERS BY HIM- BUY THEM AND TRIP OUT

Moby as I first knew him..........2002-07-27
This review is actually just for the Moby portion. I've listened to the Sven Vath portion and it just hasn't held my interest -- yet. It's got a 'dark' feel to it and is quite absorbing in that sense. Perhaps I simply haven't been in the mood. If you are a Sven Vath fan, I believe you'll enjoy this mix. As for Moby, this mix is before he really hit the mainstream and became ubiquitous (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).
To me, this is Moby (and 'techno' music for that matter) the way he is meant to be heard. It is one track flowing easily into the next, taking recognizable Moby songs and transforming them into one seamless mix. This transformation ability is, to me, what makes Moby an artist. He is a DJ not a pop star and the mixing of one track into the next into one long montage is what makes this music great. It has the ability to actually take you away.
From the first notes of C3 Bells, you will be drawn in and will be ready for another loop when "Next Is The E" ends. Everyone I have played this for starts bobbing there head to the music as if in a trance and they don't even know it.
It is fluid, hypnotic and captivating. If I could have this on headphones all day, I could drift through life with joy and never miss a beat.
My only critique would be the quality of the actual recording. It doesn't quite have the range I'm used and sounds a bit low end and there is some tape hiss to be heard. I'm not sure why this is but the music is what matters.
(Update: This is an old review with a new email address. I'm trying to compile them for consistency. I still love this album and never fail to be moved.)
No offense to Sven Vath but I have never listened to his part. It sounds just a little too, as the liner says, evil (or something like that). Personally, I think he thinks a little too much of himself. My CD player literally will not play Vath's stuff.
Treat yourself and skip right over to Moby (starts on track 6). The five star rating is for Moby alone. This is Moby the way he is meant to be heard.
From the first notes of C3 Bells, you will be drawn in and will be ready for another loop when "Next Is The E" ends. Everyone I have played this for starts bobbing there head to the music as if in a trance. And they don't even know it!
It is fluid, hypnotic and captivating. If I could have this on headphones all day, I could drift through life with joy and never miss a beat.
