Already own the entire Kruder & Dorfmeister disography? No worries. The city of Vienna is sending more blunted beats your way in the form of Dzhian and Kamien. The downbeat capital's latest exports are much more than K&D clones, however. This is their own special brand of Sunday morning headfunk. Turkish-flavored tracks such as "Slowhand Hussein" and "Just You & I" open the Outcaste crew's bag of table tricks and let it breathe on the back porch of the Cafe del Mar. The jazz-laced "Where Are We?" and "After" imagine the Thievery Corporation out of their trademark debonair threads and in rainbow wigs and clown shoes. Dzihan & Kamien even try their hand at slightly more traditional pop structures on "Smile," in which an Edie Brickell-ish vocalist trips over a shifty typerwriter-as-rhythm-track beat. Equal parts quirk, groove, and experimentation make a pretty savory tonic. --Bob Michaels

"Freaks" Is A Footrest.......2007-05-10
The Austrian-based duo of dZihan and Kamien have been around now for almost a decade, and not without good reason. They're certainly good at what they do, and have been since they were releasing cuts under the name MC Sultan.
I say they're good, and I say "at what they do," because they aren't really all that great, and "what they do" never really changes. They've been compared to Thievery Corporation, which is fair, since both groups work with downtempo lounge that borders on jazz house. But whereas Thievery Corporation incorporates not just experimentation but also a wide sampling of cultural flavors and flourishes, dZihan and Kamien prefer to keep it low-key and unassuming.
Fine. Lounge music is by its nature low-key and unassuming, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't also be inventive or diverse. For a couple of guys with such international tastes (born in Germany, raised in Switzerland, claim to prefer Turkish/Arabic music, perform mostly in European clubs), this album hits a plateau of placidity and plays itself out there.
Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, and for the soft, flapping curtains of the lounge genre, it's a workhorse of a record. Several of the songs ("Just You & I" and "Slowhand Hussein" in particular) are pretty impressionable, knee-quaking, aggressively laid-back. And, as I said, none of them could be called bad, per se.
But, much like the mostly-milquetoast Cafe Del Mar series, these guys aren't really aspiring for much more than an inspiration to nap-time, and even that is done a little unevenly; you've got everything from fusion jazz ("Where Are We?"), to electronic pillow talk ("Spacewater"), to synthetic pop ("Smile"). It's a decent collection, even if it doesn't mesh well, and it's got its share of shakes and sighs, but, when all is said and done, there's no "freak" here to be found, and certainly no "icons."
Infectiously cool..........2005-01-01
In amongst the huge amount of distinctly second-rate laid-back electronica and chill-out music that's out there are some real hidden gems. And here's one... an album full of cleverly arranged, addictive beats that will grab repeated space on your CD player. Why? Well, despite its distinctly "tacky" cover, "Freaks & Icons" is in fact one of the coolest albums around... closer to Thievery Corporation than Kruder & Dorfmeister, but with the same beautifully crafted, multi-layered instrumentation of their more popular peers, it incorporates East European & Asian influences into familiar, rock-solid jazz-funk and "chill out" structures that, seemingly effortlessly, roll along from start to finish. After a couple of times through, the infectious melodic "hooks" that underpin virtually every track take hold and, before you know it, you're hitting the replay button yet again.
It's a Small World Afterall.......2004-09-16
Freaks & Icons marked the beginning of Six Degrees Records' shift away from world fusion music (sigh) into nu-jazz. Dzihan & Kamien are a very solid downtempo act with excellent beats and atmospheric grooves, but to call it world-influenced is a bit of a stretch. I'd love to play you all some REALLY world-influenced downtempo music. Ok, "Dabudei" has that Ibiza groove, but aside from that, this album is standard-issue Anglo lounge. Which is not to say it isn't very nice. It is. But please, don't call it "eastern." I could play you some REAL Eastern downtempo you'll die for.
Wonderfully smooth.......2003-12-20
The tracks flow effortlessly from beginning to end, without a filler song in the bunch. After listening a few times you will never have the, "ugh, I hate the beat on the this" problem that plagues some lesser-quality dubby bands.
Highlights, after listening to the CD for awhile, are pretty much every song. I became really interested in dZihan & Kamien after hearing the song "Streets of Istanbul," though, which is a good introduction to the CD. "Slowhand Hussein" is also another good string-tinged tune.
These beats are great for studying to or falling asleep - this CD was a heavy part of the soundtrack of my just-finished semester of college, and it was good soundtrack music!
I am HOOKED!.......2003-11-05
I can't say enough about the funky and fantastic mood that dZihan and Kamien's music puts me in! I LOVE this stuff! Even my 7 year old daughter is into their groove. If your into letting music make your mood, or you just want to just chill out to some groovy tunes, give them a try! You'll be glad you did. Oh, and dZihan and Kamien, if you ever read this, you guys rule! Your tunes have more than saved my sanity in several stressfull situations, thank you!!

Album Description
Freaks and Geeks is one of the most lavishly praised TV shows of all time. One essential ingredient to its success was the ingenious use of music. The Freaks And Geeks Original Soundtrack and Score CD includes some of the best anthems of the day by The Who, Joan Jett, Styx, and Rush and ties them together with the most memorable portions of Michael Andrews' score. As a special treat to fans, it also includes performances by cast members, including Nick's cringe-worthy but hilarious ode to Lindsay, "Lady L." This is one CD no Freaks And Geeks fan should be without.
Customer Reviews:
Love the series, love the soundtrack.......2007-07-06
Love the series, love the soundtrack. Cute pieces from the actual show, not just a compilation of pop songs that were used. Oh, and it has the Lady L song!!
A timeless exploration..........2005-11-08
Freaks & Geeks represents a timeless exploration into...
Oh, what the heck am I saying?! This show was flat-out funny, extremely touching and packed with some of the generation's best tunes. But even the show's creators have said that the best part of the series is each song woven into the show's intricate patchwork of natural hilarity - making this, my friends, one of the most rewarding soundtracks around.
Older listeners may recall their own experiences with songs like "Look Sharp!", "Come Sail Away" and "The Spirit of Radio."
But younger ones like myself will forever remember the tunes as they relate to the painfully awkward experiences of Sam and Lindsay Weir - debuting the Perisian nightsuit, suffering that first dance and reluctantly dropping more dry ice in the bucket.
(Or, if you've caught the deleted scenes, "Come Sail Away" may remind you of something completely different!)
Original score numbers by Michael Andrews tie all tracks together in an audible representation of all 18 episodes. And not only does this CD have a whopping 25 tracks, but the last four riff straight off the show! For those of us who finished the season and wanted more, THIS is what we wanted.
Freaks & Geeks will live on forever because of its fans, who defy cancellation to support the immensely talented creators and cast. If you enjoyed the stellar acting of John Daley - the show's young "Sam Weir," who today stars in FOX's "Kitchen Confidential" - we'd love to see you in our Yahoo! Groups discussion club, Fans of Daley.
Nothing is off-limits, including this amazing soundtrack. Just one listen merits a completely different series-watching experience.
Classic music helped make the series what it is. I highly recommend you don't own one without the other.
This is a good soundtrack to a great show..........2005-05-12
This is a good soundtrack to a great show. It includes the hits from the show that you expect, such as Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation" and Rush's "The Spirit of Radio". There is also a really good current song called "Dumb as a Crayon" by a band called The Leaving Trains. Also included is the guidance counselor doing a hilarious version of "I'm Eighteen" as well as "Up On Cripple Creek". But what kept me from really liking this CD are the instrumental songs in between the hits. It was all TV score written and performed by the same guy. Not that the music was bad, but it ruins the flow of the CD.
A very important component to the quality of the Freaks and Geeks program was how they incorporated the music. Music used correctly with film is so powerful. This comes from the CD liner notes...
"Think about the scene where Bill Haverchuck comes home in lonely latchkey style and finds solace watching Garry Shandling on Dinah! We don't hear Shandling, instead we hear The Who's "I'm One"...the perfect statement of Bill's isolation and wounded pride. "No Language in Our Lungs" from XTC offers the perfect musical background for being picked last in gym class. And who better than Joe Jackson, a still undervalued skinny-tie rock god, to play as Sam Weir tries to "Look Sharp!" in his Parisian nightsuit?"
Lastly, the liner notes list Mr. Rosso's (guidance) musical notations for each song. Pretty funny stuff such as "And maybe next time Joan Jett is counting off those first rockin' eight beats, she'll go the extra two and after counting to ten, realize she's not that angry after all!"
A nice plus would have been some classic dialogue from the show, but no such luck.
Freaks and Geeks rocks!!.......2005-04-08
What can i say. Freaks and geeks is one of the best tv shows ever made! i cant belive they canceled if after one series they were crazy!. well this soundtrack is awesome i recomend it!
A nice token from the show, but not a great album..........2004-11-25
I basically bought this album because I love "Freaks & Geeks." And as much as I appreciate having Mr. Rosso singing Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen" and Millie and Nick harmonizing on "Jesus Is Just Alright" on an album, I can only rate this album as good rather than great. As a soundtrack, this album works pretty well in capturing the spirit of the show: its humor, sensitivity and intelligence. However, I get bogged down in the score, which I think sounds a little too much like a television score, and wish that more of the '70s and '80s songs had been incorporated.

Favorite Girl Goth Metal Album.......2007-06-27
This album absolutely rocks. It stands up to repeated listening very well. It's my favorith Goth, girl album.
The tracks and lyrics are pretty much goth, metal.
This album has well constructed songs, with good lyrics and killer hooks. The vocals are edgy but not raspy, or overly sweet either. A lot of goth girl singers are too cloyingly sweet for me.
The main themes are recognizable and unique to this band.
And all of the tracks are excellent! So what's not to like?
People who say this is not metal should give this one another listen or 3.
these WoMen Are.......2007-01-29
cool. They had nothing to say but kind words when they were heckled by a few who thought women could'nt rock at Ozz Fest: And this is before the people had heard them play! (One guy admitted that..) Tight, polished, beautiful women that spit on the notion that women are'nt polished and beautiful creatures who can attAin power.
All girl band that kicks.....you know.......2006-03-15
What can I say about this group? Well they are for real with what they say/play....how many bands do that anymore....surely you aren't thinking emo(ewwww) but yeah, anyway, this group packs a good punch.....at first, with songs like the opening track and number 8's "right through you" "simon says" stands out too....other songs are only ok....but this band is definitely worth everything, these girls rock out and jam out nicely with only a few bad apples in the pie.....check them out if you are into active rock or maybe JUST getting into active rock....A sure-fire win in any case
SIMON SAYS..........2006-03-04
I bought this CD back in the summer of '99 and was so thrilled to have bought it. My fav' song is "Simon Says" as it pokes fun at all the white boys who try to be black. And back then you would see a lot of white people (guys and gals) putting their hair in dreadlocks, wanna be Hip-Hoppers. I hate hip-hop. When Biggie and 2Pac left, that's when I left. Hip-hop is now a celebration of stupidity. They just keep lowering their standards more and more everyday. Ya know what I'm sayin'? "Freaks of Nature" gets 5 stars in my world. Besides, I just love that witchy-bitchy look. Which reminds me... I have to go rent "The Craft"...
ONE OF THE BEST CDs I HAVE EVER HEARD!!!.......2006-01-26
I stumbled upon this CD almost accidentally. It turned out to be one of the best CDs I have ever listened to. Drain s.t.h. is an awesome band. Maria's lead vocals are infectious and Flavia, Martina, and Anna back her up with hard core instrumentals. This group will prove to anyone, without a doubt, that females do know how to rock. I highly reccommend it!

Worst Album Ever in Humankind!!!.......2007-06-12
This is the worst album ever in humankind. It's only redeeming quality is that it took quite a genius to create music (sic) that wallows in this level of lousiness. I can best describe it as a foul mouthed 4th grader on drugs. The lyrics have no degree of intelligence or wit; just puerile banter, and the music is the same crappy riff over and over and over. If you're a moron, you'll enjoy it.
not for the impressionable or idiotic.......2007-05-23
this stuff is pretty effed up indeed, but from a historical point of view you can't deny that allin did something nobody else dared to do with music:make it his kind of sickness.he proved that to be the "most punk", talent and lyrical content were secondary to persona.from what i have always understood punk was always about doing something different and new,as well as something most people wouldn't understand.gg injected punk rock with a renewed brashness and perversity that had steeped from that scene when he came on board.with that said,i only have this album and hated in the nation, have only listened to each 5 times or less, but can still see a significance to his art.some art may not be ethically sound and morally decent, but blind ignorance ALWAYS clouds the possibility to understand art and it's infinate potential.
The true king of punk, rock, hardcore, country, and everything he did........2007-03-12
GG is the king. His live shows, his albums, his movies. Everything about him was crazy. i don't care about people who think he was a creep or a pervert. He was just compfortable expressing and exposing himself. This is one of his best works. This is true music. It is a little sick and twisted but who cares? The best works, "Commit suicide", "die when you die", "outlaw scumfuc", and about every other song is amazing. This is true pure, raw work from GG Allin. I bought this album on it's release date in 1988 and felt like killing someone. Oh man this is amazing. The thing that I love about GG was that he wasn't a pansy. He wasn't afraid of anyone and wasn't afraid to do anything. He makes me wanna spit right in all the new pansy band's faces.
Yes, it's sick. But that's what makes it good!.......2006-08-19
The music is disgusting and raw. The vocals are savage and one can tell GG ripped his throat up singing these songs. Everyone knows GG Allin was an ignorant nutcase who gleefully mutilated his body through drugs and violence. That's no reason to boycott the music. If anything, GG was real. The music, likewise, is real. No other artist can capture the brutal desperation which pervades this CD. It is the ultimate look into the mind of the criminally insane: From the grasping song, 'Dope Money' to the grotesque 'Young Little Meat.' By listening, you LIVE the seedy, crass filth of GG Allin. You watch bloody horror movies don't you? Well, I listen to bloody horror music. Get over it.
Greatest album of all time.......2006-06-14
Most definitely the passion of the christ; the jesus christ allin that is. The first time I heard it, my friend grant and i just sat there in stunned amazement. We used to drive around with the album cover in the window of our scumvan and take pictures of girls holding it in front of their bosoms. GG meant a hell of a lot to me during some strange years in my life, and his detractors just don't understand. We had an entire cult in Lynn Valley dedicated to the praise and worship of this amazing human being. Love was his ultimate message.

"freaks"is a solid effort w/a more serious approach than on "vs. earth".i got the sence (while listening to "vs. earth") that this band was capabal of yeilding great thrash."freaks" confirms my suspicion. trax 3,4 & 5 are instant thrash classics.

Another Overlooked Gem.......2006-02-24
I bought House of Freaks in 1991 because 'Rocking Chair' was getting pretty good airplay from the local Minneapolis alt/college rock radio station at the time. Since then, I'd only heard 'Rocking Chair' once as piped-in music at a T.G.I. Fridays several years ago.
'Rocking Chair' is an aptly named number that bounds with a laid back swagger and sound, that also reminds one of Joe Walsh - only with more clever lyrics. This song is best enjoyed on a road trip with the sun blazing into the windscreen.
You'll find other gems such as 'Never', which is an excellent bitter post-break-up poem expressing conflicting emotions of love, denial, yearning, and spitefulness all wrapped in one song. Joe Walsh-like guitars lazyily float in the background as the singer stridently emotes his feigned indifference. But the words become more mournful as the guitars come to the forefront as the angry voice plaintively recedes in the background.
'Honor Among Lovers' is another lovelorn missive that has a nice radio-friendly sound to it. Otherwise conventional vocals and instrumentals proceed with thundering drums crashing quixotically in the background, yet whole thing somehow sustains a cohesive rhythm.
'Magpie Wing' is a nice little roots music number a'la The Soggybottom Boys in the Cohen Bros. movie "O Brother Where Art Thou." Wished they took it a bit more serious and left out the burp. In other parts, you get the feeling that Bryan and Johnny took this album's recording with a very casual attitude.
'Remember Me Well' is a beautifully rendered opus, reminiscent of an Irish funeral procession that neatly ties a sentimental bow to this little forgotten gem. And I do remember this album well.
There are millions of gifted musicians, a few hundred thousand gifted musicians and songwriters. Unfortunately, the marketplace circa 1991-2000 could not adequately support all of them. Bryan Harvey and Johnny Hott are among the talented-but-forgotten but I'm grateful I found their CD.
interesting..........2004-06-25
I bought this album because i saw it in a bin of CDs for 99 cents at FYE a couple days ago... so i was like "hmm.. this looks interesting, im gonna get it" i had never heard of them... didnt even know if the name of the band was Cakewalk or A house of freaks! but i took it home and listened to it expecting it to be crap... but it was actually pretty good. Some of the songs are enjoyable to listen to... the only one i have trouble with is Ants because the constant mention of bugs is just... ugh, intolerable.

Dj Dan is the man!.......2001-09-02
i know i only give this cd 4 starts, but it is still an excellent compilation. dj dan is one of my fav djs, and i love his unique, funky style. on this disc, look for paul johnson's "its a love thang", jan driver's "filter", the groovezone mix of "eisbaer", and cirrus's "back on a mission". these are all great tracks! the reason this cd didn't get 5 starts was some of the tracks kinda seemed like they were just filling blank space, and i wasn't impressed with them. overall a great cd that will get you out of your seat for sure!
Great CD to ride to.......2000-08-24
If you have a road trip, it would be a valueable lesson to take DJD B4Freaks with you. This head trip is solid, a bit funky, but overall, a nicely thoughtout rythmic vibe of good beats ands music. DJD puts his style all throughout this compilation and his style has forced me to stick with the MOONSHINE RECORDS bandwagon....... ATB, DJ Bryan.
One of the best.......2000-03-31
I own every Dj Dan cd to date, and this is by far on of the best. The tracks are flavorful and creative, with some of the best build-ups I've heard in a while. The later tracks in the cd are not spectacular, but the first 10 are basically hall of famers in the world of house. I recommend this cd highly
Dj Dan is off the hook.......1999-09-10
all you break beat kids out there are in for a treat. dj dan is off the hook with this cd! one of his best yet.
An album I can live without.......1999-08-21
Synthetic, repetitive and when played loudly (as it should be) headache inducing. Listen to it though, it might be your style although it leaves me flat. More layer, variation and texture are needed to get a better rating from me. DJ Cam is my suggestion on how to do this better.

HOuse of Freaks.......2006-03-31
I love this album, it was a chance find at the local record store and I'm now known to play it over and over again without pause. It was nice to find out that I could get a CD copy of it because my tape is sounding a little off now.
Fantastic .......2006-03-10
Some friends and I went to see ex-Husker Du frontman Bob Mould in concert during the Workbook tour in 1989 in Munich, at a small place with crowd of maybe 200. Opening for him was a band none of us ever heard of, House of Freaks. Two guys? What the hell? Their set (most of Tantilla) blew everyone away, really amazing. I (and probably a lot of others in the crowd) went out and bought the record, and it is hell of a record.
Great Songs.......2005-03-02
I purchased this album back in '89 and listened to it again recently. Good mix of songs with a definite Southern bias to the lyrics. Good song writing and composition. Hammer and White Folks are my two favorite songs that pick up steam as they go along.
